Thy Catafalque Release Live Video Ahead of Hellfest

Though never intended to leave the studio, Thy Catafalque has grown into a soaring - and roaring - live act. Tamás Kátai and his ever-expanding cast of collaborators are performing at Hellfest, Rockstadt Extreme, Alcatraz and other European festivals this summer before embarking on their first-ever tour of Latin America.

"This is a massive step-up for Thy Catafalque", Kátai says. "We are very excited to play for our fans in places where we've never gone before".

As they prepare to light up the world stage, today, Thy Catafalque are releasing a live video from last year's hometown performance of the heaviest song off their dreamy twelfth album.

Watch Thy Catafalque perform "Vasgyár" live at Dürer Kert - Below:

XII: A gyönyörű álmok ezután jönnek (The Beautiful Dreams Are Yet to Come) is out now on Season of Mist.

As the main conductor behind Thy Catafalque, Tamás Kátai has journeyed far beyond his humble beginnings during the late '90s. But "Vasgyár" ties to his past in more ways than one. Not only does the song gets its name from the rusted-out ironworks that once fueled the Hungarian economy. Its steaming blast beats and blackened chug call back to the ashen pyres that forged Thy Catafalque's initial offerings.

And yet - Thy Catafalque's twelfth album only goes to show how far this one-time studio project has come. Joined by the fearsome growls of Zoltán Kónya, along with many other familiar faces from across his avant-garde discography, last year, Kátai performed "Vasgyár" for a sold-out crowd at Dürer Kert, which remains one of Hungary's most influential underground venues. As spacey synth and a stirring violin solo weave as one with the track's heavy bass line, it's clear to everyone watching that Thy Catafalque are still progressing to new heights.

The video for "Vasgyár"was recorded on November 23, 2024 at Dürer Kert, Budapest, Hungary.

Thy Catafalque Premiere Dark and Dreamy New Album

Like all big things, Thy Catafalque come from small beginnings. Back in the late '90s, Tamás Kátai started the project in his Hungarian hometown as a black metal duo that was never intended to leave the studio. Now, two decades later, the two-time Fonogram winner and his lively band of collaborators are about to release their most imaginative album yet.

"After twenty-five years creating delightful avant garde concoctions of folk, electronica, extreme metal, and progressive-minded good ol' fashioned rock, you'd almost expect Tamás Kátai to run out of ideas", writes  Everything Is Noise. "And yet, as proven by their twelfth album, Thy Catafalque isn't showing any signs of slowing down."

XII: A gyönyörű álmok ezután jönnek comes out tomorrow, Friday, November 15, but you can hear all 10 dark and dreamy songs today by listening to the full album stream on the Season of Mist YouTube channel.

Thy Catafalque Feast on New Single "Mindenevő"

"...yet another testament to the musical genius of Tamás Kátai" - No Clean Singing

"Few musicians have as long and varied a career as Tamás Kátai of Thy Catafalque" - Angry Metal Guy

"Thy Catafalque are a one of a kind experiment that have never played by traditional rules or boundaries" - New Noise

"A monstrously entertaining, tightly diverse band" - Everying Is Noise

"...will delight metlaheads of all stripes" - Echoes and Dust

Even during its initial gestation period, Thy Catafalque had already expanded beyond the perceived limits of extreme metal. With each album, Tamás Kátai and his band of collaborators have taken another step beyond the genre's boundaries, bringing the world's most vile art form into conversation with the avant-garde.

There's still a light at the end of Thy Catafalque's upcoming twelfth album. But as Kátai winds through its introspective journey into the night, XII: A gyönyörű álmok ezután jönnek revisits the all-consuming heaviness that courses back through the project's 20-year history. While garnished with plenty of classical flourishes, its meaty new single "Mindenevő" growls like the belly of a metallic beast.

Feast your eyes on the video for  "Mindenevő" Below.

XII: A gyönyörű álmok ezután jönnek comes out November 15, 2024 on Season of Mist.

A gyönyörű álmok ezután jönnek is still guided by the dreaminess that fans in and outside of Hungary have come to admire about Thy Catafalque. After all, in English, the album's title translates to 'The Beautiful Dreams Are Yet to Come'. "I imagined these songs as a journey into the night", Kátai says. Finding his way along this path required him to head in a different direction - at least, as far as the production goes. The dark waves of synth that streak through the album's title track and lead single glow with the faint but familiar reassurance of the dawn.

Still, journeying through A gyönyörű álmok ezután jönnek can be a rocky road. While the latest single opens with a plucking oud, "Mindenevő" is a full bore feast for bloodthirsty metalheads. The insatiable blast beats and tongue-flicking tremolo picking are cooked over the same blackened fires as Thy Catafalque's 1999 debut. "Our last album, Alföld, was very bleak", Kátai explains. "Adding classical and acoustic instruments helped add a sprig of color to these new songs, but XII still has plenty of metal".

Even the progressive flourishes feed the song's sickening theme. A fretless bass waltzes into the room just as the video's dinner party succumbs to their insatiable appetite for destruction. "Blood and fat shall course through every vein", chants a doomy operatic chorus. "We devour everything around us", Kátai says when asked about the philosophical musings that greased the wheels of "Mindenevő" (which means "Omnivore"). "It's absurd. The way we consume everything in our path only leads us closer to our demise".

In the end, the engorged death metal riffs finally eat their fill. Yet as the beastly "Mindenevő" lays to rest amidst a thick delirium of clarinet and French horn, the feeling that's left churning in the pit of your stomach is pure, unfiltered dread.

"Human beings do have an animal side", Kátai says. "Even though some of us strive for purity, in the end, we have to recognize and accept the morbidity of nature".

The video for "Mindenevő" was created by G13 Film.

THY CATAFALQUE Live at Budapest Park

For more than two decades, THY CATAFALQUE was a studio-only project. That changed in 2021, when  Tamás Kátai and a rotating cast of heavy hitters performed at the Fekete Zaj Festival, which was captured on the live album Mezolit.

Now, Thy Catafalque have solidified as a live act (though they still surprise audiences with a special guest here and there). Back in May, they played Budapest Park in Kátai's native Hungary. The setlist included the elegant, cinematic cello of old favorites like "Kő koppan", the heady "Töltés", off the soon-to-be reissued 'Geometria', as well as "Néma vermek", the punishing, synth-swirled closer off
the band's new album  ‘Alföld’.

Watch the band play six songs off their Budapest Park setlist
below.

'Alföld' is out now on Season of Mist. Stream the album
HERE. Order it HERE.

Thy Catafalque's next show is on August 16 at this year's
Feke Zaj Festival.

THY CATAFALQUE’s humble genius Tamás Kátai abandons any and all prenotions of tradition. Intertwining elements from a vast swath of unrelated genres, from jazz to pop to folk, and everything in between, THY CATAFALQUE masterfully crafts an eclectic sound that breaks down any generic barriers or borders. Following the massive success of 2021’s critically-acclaimed ‘Vadak’ the entity returns with ‘Alföld’ another esoteric monument in its already storied catalogue.

Originally,
THY CATAFALQUE emerged as a black metal band founded by singer/keyboard player Tamás Kátai with the aid of guitarist/bassist János Juhász. Following their joined debut ‘Sublunary Tragedies’ (1999), the Hungarians evolved into quite different directions, but steadily gaining more followers in the process through the following albums, ‘Microcosmos’ (2001) and the self-released ‘Tűnő idő tárlat’ (2004).

On their fourth full-length, ‘Róka hasa Rádió’ (2009),
THY CATAFALQUEinvited Ágnes Tóth from neo-folk outfit THE MOON AND THE NIGHTSPIRIT and Attila Bakos to add their haunting vocals. With fifth album ‘Rengeteg’ (2011), Tamás Kátai finally went solo with the help of guest musicians that again included Ágnes Tóth an Attila Bakos. Dubbing his eclectic musical amalgamation avant-garde metal, the Hungarian explored new sonic possibilities with ‘Sgùrr’ (2015). The sixth full-length turned out to be slightly more complex than its successor, ‘Meta’ (2016), which returned to a more direct approach without losing the steadily growing sonic diversity. In 2018, THY CATAFALQUE continued this path with the release of ‘Geometria’. THY CATAFALQUE delivered another spectacular musical mosaic with their ninth full-length entitled ‘Naiv’, inspired by the “Naïve Art” movement.

In 2021,
THY CATAFALQUE return with ‘Vadak’. Meaning “Wildlings” in Hungarian, the album title is a deliberate clue to the exotic and feral essence of ‘Vadak.’ Like seedlings scattered throughout the forest by the mere forces of nature, THY CATAFALQUE’s imaginative sound grows with an organic sense of whimsy, cultivated within the vast influences of our megacosm. Thematically, ‘Vadak’ is a foreboding lesson in mortality. Emphasizing the fragility that is shared by man and beast alike, the record explores our Freudian life instincts, in which we inherently fear and run from the ultimate goal of existence: death.

At its core, ‘Alföld’ expresses the familiar hallmarks that are unique to only
THY CATAFALQUE, and yet, it is an unpredictable magnum opus, returning to the raw side of Kátai and his esteemed co-conspirators. The album puts forth an elegance that cannot be matched or rivalled by any musical contemporary, taking fans on an adventure that is rife with excitement, drama, and unbridled craftsmanship.

THY CATAFALQUE Premiere New Album

THY CATAFALQUE are streaming their new album on the Season of Mist YouTube channel. Listen to all nine tracks below.

'Alföld' is THY CATAFALQUE's 11th album and it shows once again the myriad ways that Tamás Kátai and his collaborators keep evolving. "Néma vermek" wraps things up by harkening back to the old-fashioned, pulverizing black metal that the band cut their teeth with during the early '00s. It's named after the Great Hungarian Plain, which is where Kátai grew up.

But 'Alföld' continues to push THY CATAFALQUE's experimental streak even further, leaning into fretless bass and wobbly synths that cast the same eerie glow as the The Twilight Zone. The album busts right down the door with "A scend hegyei", a progressive bent on doom metal that welcomes in Ahriman's Lambert Lédeczy, who grunts like a fire-breathing dragon.

'Alföld' will be released via Season of Mist on June 16, 2023. Pre-save the album
HERE or pre-order it from the Season of Mist store HERE

THY CATAFALQUE Shares Music Video for New Song "A csend hegyei"

Avant-garde project THY CATAFALQUE is now sharing a stunning music video for the brand new single, "A csend hegyei!" The song is taken from THY CATAFALQUE's latest opus 'Alföld,' which is due via Season of Mist on June 16, 2023. Watch the video below.

Mastermind Tamás Kátai comments: "The title of the song means 'The Mountains of Silence' and this is the opening track of the album with the vocals of Lambert Lédeczy from Ahriman and Mörbid Carnage. The song is somber and dark, something that has been inside me for years and finally released. The video was created by Chad Michael Ward and shot in Sweden."

Pre-orders for 'Alföld' are now available HERE, while the album can be pre-saved HERE

THY CATAFALQUE is a metamorphic entity that’s constantly evolving, showcasing musical ingenuity that’s as limitless as it is daring. Meaning “The Great Plains,” ‘Alföld’ is grounded in the Avant Garde project’s heavy beginnings. While the record takes a cue from THY CATAFALQUE’s early days, mastermind Tamás Kátai’s modern progressive instincts shine through, elevating the record beyond the realm of metal as-you-know-it and once again creating a cutting-edge sound that’s far ahead of its time.

"'Alföld' is the most straight forward and classic extreme metal album the project ever recorded," says mastermind Tamás Kátai. "This time I just wanted to do metal without any innovation or progression, focusing on songs and riffs rather than experimenting and breaking new grounds. Had to let the old ideas out, so I did it with enjoyment. Alföld means The Great Plains, a massive flat part of South-East Hungary where I was born and raised and we shot the video for Néma vermek in the middle of the barren lands, in Makó-Bogárzó."

Originally, THY CATAFALQUE emerged as a black metal band founded by singer/keyboard player Tamás Kátai with the aid of guitarist/bassist János Juhász.

In 2021, THY CATAFALQUE return with ‘Vadak’.

Now, the visionary is looking to the past as it journeys onward and upward with its latest opus, which is just as familiar as it is forward-thinking, certain to mesmerize a vast swath of metal enthusiasts across all genres.

THY CATAFALQUE Announces New Album, Reveals First Song

Avant-garde project THY CATAFALQUE will be releasing its latest opus 'Alföld,' via Season of Mist on June 16, 2023. In celebration, THY CATAFALQUE is now releasing the very first track "Néma vermek," along with a dark and thought-provoking music video. The video can be found below.

Mastermind Tamás Kátai comments: "Alföld is the most straight forward and classic extreme metal album the project ever recorded. This time I just wanted to do metal without any innovation or progression, focusing on songs and riffs rather than experimenting and breaking new grounds. Had to let the old ideas out, so I did it with enjoyment. 'Alföld' means 'The Great Plains,' a massive flat part of South-East Hungary where I was born and raised and we shot the video for 'Néma vermek' in the middle of the barren lands, in Makó-Bogárzó."

THY CATAFALQUE Announces Premiere of Full Blu-Ray Performance

Avant-garde collective THY CATAFALQUE will be premiering the full performance from their upcoming live Blu-ray 'Mezolit - Live at Fekete Zaj!' The Blu-Ray contains the band's first ever live performance, which took place at the Fekete Zaj festival (Budapest) in August 2021 and will be released on November 25, 2022 via Season of Mist!

The live stream will take place on Thanksgiving day, November 24, 2022 @ 1:00 P.M. EST via the Season of Mist YouTube channel HERE. You can now watch the trailer and set a reminder!

Mastermind Tamás Kátai comments: "Last August a unique and magical event took place at Fekete Zaj Festival. 26 musicians performed 15 Thy Catafalque songs in front of a sold out festival and sparked the live carnation of the project that had been a mere studio entity for 23 years. The concert has been recorded and will be released in November. Re-live the night - this will never happen again in such form."

In addition to the upcoming Blu-ray, THY CATAFALQUE announced limited vinyl editions of the 'Rengeteg' (2011) and 'Meta' (2016) re-issues. Pre-orders for the Blu-ray and re-issues are now live HERE.

The very first live show of THY CATAFALQUE was recorded in August 2021, during the Fekete Zaj festival in Hungary. 26 Musicians performed 15 songs from Thy Catafalque’s discography which is now captured on this unique Blu-ray ‘Mezolit - Live at Fekete Zaj’!

Following the massive success of 2020’s critically-acclaimed ‘Naiv,’ the entity returns with ‘Vadak,’ another esoteric monument in its already storied catalog.

At its core, latest release ‘Vadak’ (2021) expresses the familiar hallmarks that are unique to only THY CATAFALQUE, and yet, it is an unpredictable magnum opus, showcasing the latest evolution from Kátai and his esteemed co-conspirators. The album puts forth an elegance that cannot be matched or rivaled by any musical contemporary, taking fans on an adventure that is rife with excitement, drama, and unbridled craftsmanship.

With fifth album 'Rengeteg' (2011), Tamás Kátai finally went solo with the help of guest musicians that again included Ágnes Tóth an Attila Bakos. Dubbing his eclectic musical amalgamation avant-garde metal, the Hungarian explored new sonic possibilities with 'Sgùrr' (2015). The sixth full-length turned out to be slightly more complex than its successor, 'Meta' (2016), which returned to a more direct approach without losing the steadily growing sonic diversity. In 2018, THY CATAFALQUE continued this path with the release of ‘Geometria’. THY CATAFALQUE delivered another spectacular musical mosaic with their ninth full-length entitled ‘Naiv’, inspired by the “Naïve Art” movement.

At its core, ‘Vadak’ expresses the familiar hallmarks that are unique to only THY CATAFALQUE, and yet, it is an unpredictable magnum opus, showcasing the latest evolution from Kátai and his esteemed co-conspirators. The album puts forth an elegance that cannot be matched or rivaled by any musical contemporary, taking fans on an adventure that is rife with excitement, drama, and unbridled craftsmanship.

THY CATAFALQUE Reveals New Single, "Köszöntsd A Hajnalt"

THY CATAFALQUE
Reveals New Single,
"Köszöntsd A Hajnalt"

Avant-Garde entity THY CATAFALQUE will be releasing its tenth masterpiece, 'Vadak,' on June 25! The Hungarian mastermind is now unveiling the latest mind-bending single, "Köszöntsd A Hajnalt," which can be heard here.

The track is available for pre-saving across all digital streaming platforms HERE.

Hungarian mastermind Tamás Kátai comments: "'Köszöntsd a hajnalt' means 'Greet the Dawn' and it features Martina Horváth on vocals and although the song has some folky vibes, we used redpipes here which is a sort of electronic pipes, delivered by Andrei Oltean."

Pre-orders are now live HERE

THY CATAFALQUE’s humble genius Tamás Kátai abandons any and all prenotions of tradition. Intertwining elements from a vast swath of unrelated genres, from jazz to pop to folk, and everything in between, THY CATAFALQUE masterfully crafts an eclectic sound that breaks down any generic barriers or borders. Following the massive success of 2020’s critically-acclaimed ‘Naiv,’ the entity returns with ‘Vadak,’ another esoteric monument in its already storied catalog.

Originally, THY CATAFALQUE emerged as a black metal band founded by singer/keyboard player Tamás Kátai with the aid of guitarist/bassist János Juhász. Following their joined debut 'Sublunary Tragedies' (1999), the Hungarians evolved into quite different directions, but steadily gaining more followers in the process through the following albums, 'Microcosmos' (2001) and the self-released 'Tűnő idő tárlat' (2004).

THY CATAFALQUE Unveils New Album Details, Premieres First Single

Avant-Garde entity THY CATAFALQUE will be releasing its tenth masterpiece, 'Vadak,' on June 25! The album art and track list can be found below. In conjunction with the forthcoming release, THY CATAFALQUE is now sharing its mind-bending first single, "Piros-sárga!"

"Piros-sárga" is can be pre-saved on all digital platforms HERE.

Mastermind/multi-instrumentalist Tamás Kátai comments on the new album and track: "'Vadak' is the tenth album of Thy Catafalque. The state of the world affects all of us, in my case I think it means more escapism. We, like all living creatures are like forest animals chased by death through time and many of these songs are about fleeing, hiding and running either to the past or to the unknown. The record is very colourful, with more guest musicians than ever but also pretty dark and heavy other times. The first song however is a light, nostalgic one about old summers, lost gardens and the colours of the sun, with Armenian duduk, tabla, dumbek, riq and brass."

THY CATAFALQUE Shares Official Music Video for Song, "Naput"

The official music video for Thy Catafalque's track 'Napút', which is taken from the album 'Naiv'. Release Date: January 24th, 2020. Order here: https://smar...

Hungarian avant garde collective THY CATAFALQUE are now unveiling a brand new music video for the track Napút," which is taken from their latest album 'Naiv.'

Mastermind Tamás Kátai comments on the stream: "This is a video we shot in my home town, Makó. Many of these locations are the places I grew up in and although nothing fancy is going on, it was nice to get back to where the songs came from. With this one, we close the lid on 'Naiv' and focus on the next album."

'Naiv' was released in January of 2020 and was named the #1 Album of the Year by Last Rites. The record can be ordered, streamed, and downloaded HERE.

To request an interview with THY CATAFALQUE, please contact Katy Irizarryat Katy@season-of-mist.com. Additional assets, such as hi-rez photos, can be found HERE.

The artwork of 'Naiv,' which has been created by Irene Saíz Guerrero, can be viewed together with the album details below.

THY CATAFALQUE are delivering another spectacular musical mosaic with their ninth full-length entitled ‘Naiv’, inspired by the “Naïve Art” movement. The project's sole mastermind, Tamás Kátai has once again assembled pieces out of such diverse genres as ambient, folklore, jazz, metal, electronica, rock, pop, wave, and other styles that each taken for itself seems not to fit easily to the other parts.

Yet, THY CATAFALQUE come out as a sonic entity far more than just its combined parts. What could quickly end up as an academic exercise and meaningless jumble comes in fact across with emotional depth and beautiful soundscapes that render the seams of their components invisible by ingeniously fitting every tessera into a greater musical picture.
Originally, THY CATAFALQUE emerged as a black metal band founded by singer Tamás Kátai with the aid of singer/keyboard player János Juhász. Following their joined debut 'Sublunary Tragedies' (1999), the Hungarians evolved into quite different directions, but steadily gaining more followers in the process through the following albums, 'Microcosmos' (2001) and the self-released 'Tűnő idő tárlat' (2004).

On their fourth full-length, 'Róka hasa Rádió' (2009), THY CATAFALQUE invited Ágnes Tóth from neo-folk outfit THE MOON AND THE NIGHTSPIRIT and Attila Bakos to add their haunting vocals. With fifth album 'Rengeteg' (2011), Tamás Kátai finally went solo with the help of guest musicians that again included Ágnes Tóth and Attila Bakos. Dubbing his eclectic musical amalgamation avant-garde metal, the Hungarian explored new sonic possibilities with 'Sgúrr' (2015). The sixth full-length turned out to be slightly more complex than its successor, 'Meta' (2016), which returned to a more direct approach without losing the steadily growing sonic diversity. In 2018, THY CATAFALQUE continued this path with the release of ‘Geometria’.

THY CATAFALQUE do not pretend to produce easy-listening music that comes as easy as it quickly fades out of the mind again. 'Naiv' demands to be listened to with full attention, but with every new spin this masterpiece reveals more of its secrets and rewards the listener with a rich treasure of fascinating details.
