"When the fires happened in LA I evacuated to Vegas and ended up meeting some incredible people. Ekoh, Travis from colorblind, Curt Martin, and now my manager Kyle. We were all in shock from what was happening, I remember we were all just sitting there talking about how unreal everything felt, and constantly checking to see if our homes and friends were safe. But during such a tragic time we were able to make something so beautiful from it. All of us together ended up making such a powerful song that will hopefully help anyone who needs it. Ray Hawthorne is basically an emo Muppet. His life revolves around pop culture references, Ninja Turtles action figures, and his dog named Oliver. Oliver laid on Ray’s feet during the recording of every song on his forthcoming album “Ray Hawthorne

Sucks”. This was mostly a positive experience, but there’s a particular section during the song “Panic Mode” where Ray had to yell “HEY HEY HEY HEY” over and over again. This made Oliver very tense, and he thought he was being scolded. Ray felt really bad for confusing Oliver in such a way. After the recording was done treats were had by all, and all was well.

I don’t know how or why, but that’s what I did. "This is a video taken from our performance at Transplants Brewing Company in Palmdale. We play the album version of "SCREAM!!!" in its full, eight-minute entirety. The extended outro was improvised between me, JT, and Tyler when we were warming up at a practice back in November 2023 before David and Mark showed up. It ended up becoming a sprawling sonic journey to make something special. I think the live version we ended up capturing from this video really shows our band chemistry, and how much fun we have just playing music together. There are cuts of some handcam footage from a roadtrip I took earlier this summer, one I was supposed to take with my dear dad. Since the song and upcoming album are all about processing grief, I figured this would be a great way to pay tribute with the video.

It was the therapy I needed to move forward in a new era."

Formed in 1997, The Exies released two influential LPs with Virgin Records, 'Inertia' and 'Head For The Door', achieving combined sales of over 500k and spawning singles that charted at rock radio. Both albums secured positions on the Billboard 200 chart. Their third album "A Modern Way of Living with the Truth" came out in 2007 before the group disbanded in 2010.

ABOUT THE EXIES

The Exies, formed in 1997 and named in homage to John Lennon’s shortened term for the 1960s art students in Hamburg that called themselves “the existentialists”, had a prosperous journey, peaking with 2003’s Inertia and 2004's Head For The Door. Both albums were released by Virgin Records and, combined, sold more than 500,000 copies.

In 2007, The Exies put out their third full-length, A Modern Way Of Living With The Truth, before disbanding three years later. Despite frontman Scott Stevens' pivot to songwriting for others, amassing significant accolades and contributions to over 40 million album sales, the band's 2010 dissolution left him longing for closure. This yearning and finding himself at a loose end in the beginning days of the pandemic, Stevens began to write and soon realized that new The Exies songs were materializing before him it just started to unfold happen without him realizing. Speaking on the experience, Stevens shares

“Once I committed to writing and producing for others, I really went in,” he explains. “I just jumped in the ocean and didn’t think about writing for myself anymore. And that’s why it was so odd when I went for a walk in 2020—outside with a mask on—and all of a sudden I hear a melody in my head and I’m like, ‘Who’s that? What’s that?’ And all of a sudden I realized that that’s my voice. It was very puzzling in the beginning, and then it started happening more and more. I don’t know what spurred it on or what caused it. Time? Not being able to work as much? Maybe my mind drifting a little bit more because I have to work. Nobody was coming over here because nobody was going anywhere. And I didn’t want to Zoom write, because although it’s kind of a way of life now and I love it, I was like ‘What is that?’ I really didn’t think about writing for The Exies again until it started haunting me.”

"Strangers was written amidst dark times. We were all recovering from family death and losing friends. We felt very alone in a crowded city. We worked grocery store jobs and often times sat in our car late night after a shift wondering when things would get better, and wondering if we were alone in this feeling. The Strangers music video depicts a very normal guy who found himself somewhere he didn’t want to be. His dreams haunt him and he feels he doesn’t belong. He quickly finds himself consumed by his thoughts and spit out as a version of himself completely different than he was."

Expanding on the "Strangers" video, director and animator Callum Scott-Dyson adds:

"For the 'Strangers' video, we really wanted to capture the feeling of loneliness, isolation, alienation and the humdrum of daily life, living on the clock with no escape. Then we liked the idea of using his dreams to explore the negative stuff going on in his mind, and then having the dreams invade his daily life. In terms of the animation style, I really wanted to push the DIY stop motion vibe I've been honing lately, most the sets are made with card and clay and I made everything myself from scratch. The main note from the band once we were rolling was to keep the tone and visual style a little darker and subdued to most other animation so I enjoyed that challenge, working with a lot of washed out blues and greens. I'm really happy with how it's come out and I hope people dig it when it drops!"

"I swear. I’m being dead serious. I’m not Ryan Gosling. For real. As I’m typing this I’m realizing that our first names have many of the same letters. R-Y-A-N, then just move some around, R-A-Y. I’m not sure what to do with the N, but 75% of our first name letters match. Now that I have realized this connection, I wonder if it’s possible that we’re actually the same person? Are we all Ryan Gosling? Or are none of us Ryan Gosling? Is Ryan Gosling even Ryan Gosling? I can’t handle the thought. I wanna see that movie where he plays a stuntman whenever it comes out. I forget what its called, but it looks real good."

"Do you remember that episode of Degrassi where Ashley really wants Craig to tell her he loves her, but Craig gets all panicked and can’t tell her that he does? It causes so much drama in their relationship. She begins to question her feelings for him and because of that, he becomes seemingly unsure of his feelings for her. So, in an effort to quell the bad vibes, Craig writes a song that includes lyrics IMPLICITLY AND EXPLICITLY stating that he loves her. (Total banger by the way, the only song of his I like better is the one he sings at the battle of the bands after the two inevitably break up, it’s also about Ashley. I believe it’s called ‘What I Know’) I promise I’m going somewhere with this. Craig was only able to admit he loved Ashley in song form, but you as the viewer are left wondering ‘Does he really love her, or was this just his solution to end the drama?’ Or, ’Is this truly the only way he can express himself because he’s kind of nervous about speaking his true feelings outside of the structured environment of a song?’. I tend to believe it’s a mixture of both. So what I’m trying to say is, this collection of songs is kind of like that. I always feel like I have so much to say but often feel a bit to vulnerable when discussing my actual feelings. So for the majority of my life, I’ve just written them into songs instead. These songs can be quite vulnerable even if they seem silly at times. So now you’re left to wonder, am I telling the truth, or am I just trying to get rid of Ashley’s bad vibes?"
