LEGENDARY ROCK BAND JOURNEY ANNOUNCES NEW LIVE RELEASE 'LIVE IN CONCERT AT LOLLAPALOOZA' OUT DECEMBER 9, 2022

Frontiers Music Srl is pleased to announce the upcoming release of Journey's incredible Lollapalooza performance from Chicago, IL, which took place on July 31, 2021, 'Live in Concert at Lollapalooza' on December 9, 2022.

The stunning set, which will be released on CD/DVD, Blu-ray, and Vinyl, serves as a testament not only to the band's enduring legacy, but their relevance to a whole new generation of rock 'n roll fans.

"Journey are veteran professionals when it comes to throwing entertaining concerts, and the fans upfront knew that from experience. But for the young festival goers and indifferent onlookers who expected a weathered band of baby boomers to twiddle their thumbs for an hour before breaking out jukebox staples, they got to experience arguably the most underrated feeling a music festival can offer discovering a different side to an artist’s discography that you overlooked up until then." - Rolling Stone

"Journey’s Lollapalooza performance blended fresh and familiar, with the band’s new lineup delivering a hit-packed package during their Saturday headlining slot." - Ultimate Classic Rock

"Pineda’s kinetic showmanship was evident throughout the set’s litany of hits, as he brought fresh energy to ubiquitous singles from “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” to “Lights". However, the true spark of the night’s set rested in the hands of the band’s longest-serving members. Guitarist and founder Neal Schon was a quiet force, delivering a reliable string of solos that felt as economical as they were effortless, while on keys, hometown boy Jonathan Cain added soulful sharpness to “Stone in Love” and “Just the Same Way". If anyone in the crowd was worried about their image, they weren’t letting on. Instead, they were singing along to the band’s deep catalog of songs that have embedded themselves in the heads of anyone who’s owned a radio in the last 50 years."  -Consequence Of Sound

"Unlike so many of their classic rock brethren, Journey has managed to maintain some semblance of relevance amongst a younger demographic and wasted no time getting to the hits Saturday at Lollapalooza." - Forbes

Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018, Journey have 25 gold and platinum albums, including the fifteen million selling Greatest Hits collection, with total sales adding up to 80 million records around the world.

As the band’s legend continues to grow larger and their touring gets bigger, they recently released a new studio album, 'Freedom' in July 2022. It was their first album of new material to be released in eleven years, since 2011’s 'Eclipse'. The album was met with rave critical and fan reviews and charted in multiple countries around the globe.

About DISMEMBER:

Between 1988 and 2011 DISMEMBER earned a notorious reputation as the “Motörhead (version) of death metal”, through eight classic albums and furious live shows around the globe. The band was formed by Robert Sennebäck, David Blomqvist and Fred Estby in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1988 and has long since been regarded as one of the originators of the trademark Swedish death metal sound, next to other pioneering bands such as ENTOMBED, GRAVE and UNLEASHED. DISMEMBER recorded a couple of self-released demos before their 1990 demo cassette, Reborn In Blasphemy, with Matti Kärki on vocals and ENTOMBED's Nicke Andersson taking over most lead guitar parts, got picked up for a wider release by NUCLEAR BLAST RECORDS. In 1991, their first full-length, Like An Everflowing Stream (Nuclear Blast Records), saw the light of day, which was recorded by Thomas Skogsberg at the now legendary Sunlight Studios, and featured Richard Cabeza (UNANIMATED) on bass. DISMEMBER released their acclaimed sophomore album, Indecent & Obscene, in 1993, which to this day remains their most successful output. Three more albums would follow on NUCLEAR BLAST, Massive Killing Capacity (1995), Death Metal (1997) and Hate Campaign (2000), until the band decided to switch labels. They released two more albums, Where Ironcrosses Grow (2004, Karmageddon Records) and The God That Never Was (2005, Regain) before Fred Estby announced his departure for family reasons in 2007. Their last album, Dismember, followed in 2008 and the band officially broke up in 2011.After an eight-year hiatus, the band's original line-up reunited for a 30th anniversary gig at Scandinavia Death Fest in October 2019, performing together for the first time in over 20 years.

DARK ROCK DUO HOAXED’S DEBUT ALBUM TWO SHADOWS OUT NOW ON RELAPSE RECORDS

HOAXED unveil their captivating and catchy debut full-length, 'Two Shadows'officially out now on LP/CD/CS/Digital!

Order & listen HERE

Comprised of vocalist/guitarist Kat Keo and drummer Kim CoffelHOAXED's superlative blend of styles—heavy melodic rock with captivating hooks, gothic undertones, undeniable metal, and tinges of americana - pave the way for a singular expression that’s entirely their own.

'Two Shadows' is as unique as it is memorable and catchy. The record thrusts, retreats, and beguiles across its melody-powered and hook-driven expanse, with earworms “The Call,” “Guilty Ones”, and “The Knowing” serving as the album’s crucial lighthouses.

Hoaxed are built for Halloween!”

-Loudwire

“Shows a level of songwriting that’s not typically seen from a group that started just two years ago.”

-Metal Sucks

“On 'Two Shadows', HOAXED deliver a doom-pop manifesto made to haunt your ears for days, months, maybe even years. This isn’t a debut; this is a collection of bangers you can’t be without.”

-Distorted Sound

“That's what I call a start! Singer/guitarist Kat Keo and drummer Kim Coffel formed the band in 2020, a year later their four-song EP got the attention of Relapse, and here we have their debut. And to me it feels like a revelation - to come up with your own and fresh style today is something almost unheard of. The girls combine their melodic rock with a gothic feel and create a catchy intersection of dynamic music and melancholic vocals."

Spark Magazine Czech Republic

“The fact that acts like Unto Others, Blackwater Holylight or Amorphis have already toured with Hoaxed is easy to understand from 'Two Shadows'. Grab this disc and go on a nightmare journey with Kat and Kim yourself, in the course of which horror and beauty alternate at irregular intervals...Warm greetings from two dark hearts, enveloped in great talent and fascinating imagination."

- Sonic Seducer Magazine Germany

Stream & Share "Two Shadows"

Formed in Portland, Oregon, in 2020, HOAXED's initial songwriting plan casts a wide net.

The breach opened up considerably as Coffel and Keo explored the outer edges of their musical influences and artistic aspirations. After fruitful songwriting sessions, the twosome self-released their eponymous four- song EP in February 2021.

Signaled by the whirring, diaphanous spell of video single "Candle Master", HOAXEDcaught the attention of Relapse Records, who signed the outfit in 2021.

As a live act, the pair has already hit the ground running, rocking the stage with Unto Others, Blackwater Holylight, and Amorphis, and hailed as an “absolute riot on stage.” (Metal Insider)

TEETH - EXCLUSIVE 575 EP OUT NOW!

Highly influenced by discomfort, there can be no compromise in the structure of what Ontario, Canada hardcore/metal quartet TEETH are producing because what flows from them is purely honest, and quite unlike anything that has been heard before.

Their adherence to this artistic integrity is a huge part of what caught the eye of heavy metal foundry, Nuclear Blast Records.

Today the band release the 575 EP which contains four already-released songs. Listen and order your 575 exclusive EP here: http://nblast.de/Teeth-575EP

The band comments, “This is a collection of songs that represents the beginning ofTEETH. 'Filth', 'Destroyer', 'Smother', and 'Deathrace' were the first songs we wrote and recorded with our friend Davis in Fort Erie, Ontario and that’s when we realized how cathartic this band was (and how badly we needed to continue making music together). We actually wrote/recorded 'Deathrace' when COVID really took hold and quarantine began, so that song also represents a very uncertain, anxious, dark time for all of us. This is the first time any of these songs have been available in a physical format so we’re excited to give everyone a chance to get their hands on what is now essentially the birth of TEETH.

TEETH live:
10/30/2022 Beasley Skatepark - Hamilton, ON

The 575 EP was produced and engineered by Davis Maxwell & TEETH at Bell Tower Studiosin September 2019. The cover artwork was created by Orupting (Madison Roger).

TEETH are of the philosophy that every subsequent part of the song needs to be more disgusting, uncomfortable, and nasty than the part before it. “It’s supposed to feel frantic; super visceral and aggressive,” explains Prince. “Pain is an adhesive, and in a time where there’s a lot of pent up emotion towards friends, family, everything around us... it gives people a nice vehicle to air their grievances.”

Only a couple of things remain to be seen with TEETH: when will their new album drop, and what bands can you look forward to seeing them grace the stage with? Keep your eyes onNuclear Blast Records and TEETH socials for updates.

Carousel Kings released their new emo rock collaboration track titled “Memory Kitty Chord” featuring AJ Perdomo (Dangerous Summer) to all major platforms! This single is leading up to their independent full length release titled Untitled Mixtapethat was co-written, produced, engineered, mixed, and mastered by Grant McFarlandand Carson Slovak at Atrium Audio, in Lancaster, PA.

“The song was inspired by and includes lyrics written by my late father who wrote a breakup poem in about 1978. The poetry book Is one of the only things left I have of my father so it was cool to kinda collab with him and build out a song and write off of that first stanza that is his. The rest of the song fell into place organically in the studio with the rest of the guys and was fun to piece together. This was the first track we had AJ sing and write on over the bridge," says the band's vocalist, David Alexander.

Pre-orders for the album due out in February 2023 are already underway and can be found here:

Check Out LANDIS HARRY LARRY Official Music Video for "Naysayer"!

Baltimore based, synth punk/funk trio LANDIS HARRY LANDIS has unveiled the official music video for his new single, "Naysayer." Self-produced, "Naysayer" is off of the enigmatic artist's sophomore album,Landis via BIG CURVE MUSIC!

Purchase / Stream "Naysayer" Online

In 2020, many bands found themselves cut off from their studios, their clubs, and their bands. Landis Expandis responded by going deep into his basement studio where he created two digital clones of himself. He named one Harry and the other Larry. They became what is known today as the synth rock trio known as Landis Harry Larry. They make odd, quirky music videos about everyday experiences like personal space or how cats love to be in your way when you are doing something important.

When the trio was signed by BigCurve music, they released the soundtrack to a YouTube mockumentary about a canine human named Bunch called, “The Story Of Bunch.” For their second release, it was requested that Landis release a solo album for each member of Landis Harry Larry, each album having a completely unique style. Landis’ album is dark and gothic, Harry’s album is quirky and pop, and Larry’s album is dance music featuring special remixes by Cheekywillie.

VIA SPINEFARM

Watch the video for "HONEY FROM THE HIVEbelow.

Listen to "SOURHERE

"'HONEY FROM THE HIVE' continues to showcase the onslaught of sonic power we have created on 'ENDLESS HALLWAY'. It's a tune that feels familiar and new at the same time, with more twists and turns than a Stephen King book. As for "SOUR", it's probably one of the more palatable tunes from the 'HALLWAY', yet it still has that arena rock, rallying cry sound that we always push ourselves to deliver."

HIL also previously shared the one-two punch of a double single with "THE PROWLER"(HERE) and "LIFELESS LEMONADE(HERE).

This album is a testament to our band's endurance," the band says. "It is easily our most aggressive album to date, born and bred from the odd shift in the world that affected everyone. We have always used our music as an outlet, and no better time than when the world felt so much like an 'ENDLESS HALLWAY'."

He Is Legend will embark on the "History of Middle Earth Tour" with Valient Thorr next month. All dates are below.

HE IS LEGEND ON TOUR:

11/11 — Wilmington, NC — Reggies

11/12 — Raleigh, NC — Transfer CO

11/21 — Columbia, SC — New Brookland Tavern

ABOUT HE IS LEGEND:

He Is Legend's catalog spans 'I Am Hollywood''Suck Out the Poison''It Hates You','Heavy Fruit', and 'Few'. However, it would be 2019’s 'White Bat' that elevated them to another level altogether. Revolver highlighted it as "rollicking", while Metal Injectionawarded it a rating of "9/10" and christened them "legends, indeed". Riff Magazine hailed them as "one of metal's best-kept secrets", and Heavy Blog Is Heavy applauded 'White Bat' as "easily the band's best album in a decade, but it even takes a run at being the strongest collection of their career." Plus, it generated nearly 10 million-plus total streams.

For 'ENDLESS HALLWAY', the band wrote in their rehearsal space in Wilmington, NC. They recorded drums outside of Knoxville before cutting guitars with Al Jacob at Warrior Sound in Chapel Hill, NC. Vocals would be a different story as Croom endured one of the most trying seasons of his life.

"We had to push the vocal recording, because my stomach was failing due to my diabetes," he shares. "It was so bad I couldn't perform. It took a while to get back to some semblance of normal. Eventually, I hopped in the car and drove 10 hours to Nashville to record at Mitch Marlow's place. I'm a different person now. The universe throws those things at you to make you stronger. That's personal growth."

BEAUTY IN CHAOS presents 'Bloodletting (The Vampire Song)', reimagining the CONCRETE BLONDE track

LA-based alternative rock collective Beauty In Chaos presents their ‘Halloween Surprise’’ single - 'Bloodletting'. This is a dark, spooky New Orleans-infused rendition of the Concrete Blonde track, featuring BIC vocalists Whitney Tai, Kat Leon and Tish Ciravolo in a nod to the original song.

More than just a slight sonic departure from their previous releases, this track has BIC curator Michael Ciravolo taking the lead vocal, highlighting his New Orleans drawl, front and center. Ciravolo has also enlisted saxophone extraordinaire Mars Williams of The Psychedelic Furs to add some amazing jazz inspired avant-garde vibes to this incredible song.

“I always loved this song, as Johnette’s lyrics painted an eerily realistic picture of my hometown. On a recent trip there, I found myself walking through some dark side streets in the French Quarter with my BIC producer Michael Rozon and the freaky sights and sounds had this song ringing in my head. I heard a saxophone wailing from a distant club and that inspired this cover idea. Fortunately for me, my friends Tim Palmer and Richard Fortus had just produced the latest Furs album and kindly made an introduction to Mars. I’ve always loved what he plays with one of my favorite bands and he thankfully agreed to be part of this,” says Michael Ciravolo.

As with many BIC singles, a stunning video accompanies this release, each audio-visual offering very different from its predecessors. For “Bloodletting’, Vicente Cordero and Industrialism Films returned behind the camera.

Ciravolo adds: “Well, this video is certainly VERY different from our most recent single ‘Afterlife'. We wanted a very tongue-in-cheek (or would that be fangs-in-neck?) mix of ‘Eyes Wide Shut‘‘ and ’‘Lost Boys” … focusing more on a loosely-based storyline than just a simple band performance with it all being in good campy fun!”

Beauty In Chaos, together with Jammer Direct, released the documentary film'Unveiled', providing behind-the-scenes insight into the band's recently released all-female-fronted album 'Behind The Veil'. As for all BIC releases, the physical version (CD/ vinyl) is accompanied by a 25-track digital bonus edition featuring remixes byPaul Wiley (Marilyn Manson), Sin Quirin (Ministry), Kitty Lectro, Bentley Jones, Julian Shah-Tayler, Roman Marisak, Kevin Kipnis and The Phoenix Supernova, as well as an extended album version of 'Orion'.

As of October 31, 'Bloodletting (The Vampire Song)' will be available digitally from fine music outlets, including Apple Music, Spotify and Bandcamp. The ‘Behind The Veil’ LP can also be ordered directly from the artist athttps://www.beautyinchaosmusic.com/music-store.

CINNAMON BABE Premieres "Loose" Music Video via Dread Central (Exclusive)

One of the most outspoken and controversial newcomers in heavy music, CINNAMON BABE isn't backing down from detractors with their latest single, "Loose". The LA-based nu-metal band helmed by model/actress Stormi Maya has partnered with Dread Central to premiere the horror-inspired music video for the track. The "Loose" video was directed byAlison-Eve Hammersley; a 2019 Lena Waithe AT&T Hello Lab mentee, with directing credits for short films like Fragile.com and You'll Only Have Each Other.

Watch the "Loose" video below

Speaking on the topics of misogyny and sex work, and how they influenced "Loose",Stormi comments:

“Sex work is what I turned to for survival when I was a teenager leaving foster care and dealing with homelessness. I was going back and forth from minimum wage jobs, but it was never enough to pay bills, especially in New York City. I first got into stripping at 18, and I stuck with it for a couple years. I also was a dominatrix, sugar baby, and nude model. In those years, I dealt with a lot of mistreatment, harassment, and abuse from the same men that wanted me for my sexuality. Within the strip club, a lot of the same men that were there paying for my service were the same men that were looking down on me."

Maya adds, "It’s hard to accept that the men I make feel good with my images and company are the same men that turn on me and call me out by name when they don’t get their way. I stand with sex workers no matter their gender. I hope they legalize sex work so it can be protected and girls can rely on law enforcement for protection instead of pimps. I wish we lived in a world where adults having consensual sex and being sexual wasn’t so taboo. My biggest inspiration for the song was ‘Whore’ by In This Moment. That song empowered me so much. Because it’s true – they love me for everything they hate me for."

"Loose" was engineered and produced by Esjay Jones & J.R. Bareis (Love & Death, Spoken), mixed by Joe Rickard, and mastered by Niels Nielsen (Ghost, Starset, In Flames).

Press Reactions to "Rock 'N' Roll Is Black"...

"Cinnamon Babe is letting everyone know where she stands at the crossroads of rock and race." -Loudwire

"On the incendiary single Rock And Roll Is Black — Influenced by Rage Against The Machine’s Take The Power Back, she rails against the gatekeeping of metal from its black originators." Metal Hammer

"For Stormi, Cinnamon Babe is a labor of love, an expression of anguish and strength born out of a difficult upbringing and a devotion to alternative music." - Metal Sucks

"That anyone questions the black roots of rock in this day and age is frankly flabbergasting but, again, it probably shouldn’t be. Hopefully, the likes of Maya can educate a few people." - Idobi Radio

Randy Houser Releases "Country Round Here Tonight" Ahead of Forthcoming Album 'Note To Self' set for 11/11

RANDY HOUSER READIES FANS FOR FORTHCOMING ALBUM WITH
COUNTRY ROUND HERE TONIGHT

Produced by Houser and Blake Chancey, Note To Self is Set for Release
Friday, November 11; Pre-Order and Pre-Save
HERE

Title Track Continues Climbing the Charts at Country Radio

With his sixth studio album Note To Self set for November 11 via Magnolia Music Group, the Billboard lauded “golden-voiced Mississippi native” Randy Houser releases “Country Round Here Tonight.” Listen to the song below and pre-order/pre-save Note To Self HERE.

True to its name, “Country Round Here Tonight” is a steel guitar and fiddle-laced track written by Houser with Brice Long and Jeff Hyde, reminiscent of the classic country hits of the 90s’ and creates a feeling of nostalgia as Houser croons about a small-town spot where everyone goes to unwind and spend their paycheck:

There’s a backed up line of four wheel drives
Filling up the parking lot
This little bar they call a hole in the wall
Is everybody’s favorite spot
There’s a saw dust floor waiting on the door
To swing wide open, let us all inside
Paycheck cash is gonna go fast
‘Bout to get country round here tonight

For all them boys in the fields making dollar bills
Stacking that hay up high
All them girls in the sand working on their tans
Down by the riverside
Getting through the day, hell, they just can’t wait
To congregate round a cold beer sign
Tie one on to a jukebox song
‘Bout to get country round here tonight

Ahead of the release of Note To Self, Houser has shared multiple tracks, with Whiskey Riff observing, “It’s easy to see that his whole album is full of deep reflection from Houser throughout his life. This is gonna be a good.”

Currently Top 40 and climbing the charts at Country radio, “Note To Self,” Houser’s first taste of new music since 2019’s critically-acclaimed Magnolia, marked his “powerful return” with MusicRow boasting the Mississippi-native “remains one of country music’s very finest vocalists. His return is most welcome, especially with such a strong song of regretful hindsight. His extraordinary voice is absolutely fierce as this hair-raising pile driver reaches its climax.”

Rub A Little Dirt On It” delivers some much-needed wisdom that’s often forgotten in our fast-paced world – that difficult times are only temporary, sometimes alleviated by turning to places of beauty and tranquility, with Country Now sharing the song “acts as a reminder that with a little help from those places of stability, the tough days start to feel more insignificant over time.”

Workin’ Man” illuminates the tenacity and persistence of America’s blue-collar workers among the struggles they face day-to-day to support themselves and their families, with Billboard praising, “Houser yields his enviable vocals with a rough-hewn delivery that lends grit to this radio-friendly track,” while MusicRow calls it a “rousing blue-collar anthem” that Houser sings with “a barn-burner baritone that dips and growls in all the right places.”

Album opener “Still That Cowboy” was written by Houser, Matt Rogers and Josh Hoge as an ode to his wife Tatiana as the couple prepares for their second child together, with CMT.com sharing, “Houser has never been afraid to sing country music, and ‘Still That Cowboy’ spotlights the genre’s tenets as much as anything Houser has ever released. His baritone rings against the backdrop of the pedal steel guitar as he delivers the song written for his wife.”

With multiple sold-out shows so far in 2022, including an at-capacity stop at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, Houser wrapped his co-headlining tour with longtime friend Jamey Johnson in April and is currently on the road with Cody Johnson. Along with preparing new music and a relentless touring schedule, Houser landed on-screen roles in Martin Scorsese’s upcoming film Killers of the Flower Moon starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro and more, as well as the inspiring The Hill starring Dennis Quaid.

Melodic Death Metal Unit WOLFHEART Unleashes New Official Video for “Knell”

New Album, 'King of the North',

Out Now I Order Your Copy HERE!

Melodic death metal powerhouse WOLFHEART have shared their new official video for the blistering song “Knell”, cut from their recently released full-length studio album, 'King of the North', out now via Napalm Records.

Following the sonic legacy of their previous albums, 'King of the North' resonates with their trademark blend of colossal melodies, earth shaking vocals, gripping lyricism and driving rhythms. After the release of the album and their subsequent, recently wrapped European tour, WOLFHEART strengthen their howls for another round.

Knell”, the third song on the album, befittingly continues the electrifying mood of the previous songs, creating epic soundscapes along the way. Skillfully combining powerful riffs, hefty instrumentals and earthshaking vocals, WOLFHEART show their insatiable hunger for the art of melodic death metal.

The new video matches this mood perfectly, relentlessly pulling audiences into the exhilarating world of 'King of the North'.

WOLFHEART’s guitarist/vocalist Tuomas Saukkonen adds:

"After an agonizing three years of waiting to get back on the road, it was like an early Christmas, birthday and all the kinder eggs from Easter combined to share a tour with the magnificent ULTIMA RATIO package and get to play new songs to our fans across Europe. Having a video shot from the tour is the best way to remember the awesome crew we had, top notch venue staff and especially all those hands in the air, voices from the crowd and the connection between us and the audience interweaved by the music."

Discover distant realms of northern mythology with melodic death triumph 'King of the North'!

Each song on 'King of the North' is dedicated to a different story of Finnish mythology – underlined by WOLFHEART’s grand, crushing songwriting and production. The King, for instance, tells the tale of the forest god with horns and pianos accompanying heavy guitar riffs and solos, before raising the energy levels once more on the relentless Cold Flame” featuring Karl Sanders.

Ancestor is the album’s most frostbitten anthem, unleashing WOLFHEART’s acclaimed brand of crushing blast beasts and cutting-edge vocal performances alongside guest Jesse Leach of Killswitch Engage.

'King of the North' is a true masterpiece of melodic death metal, crafted with loads of attention to detail and intricate mythology-driven storytelling – showcasing WOLFHEARTat never-before-heard artistic levels!

Tuomas Saukkonen about 'King of the North':

"After 'Wolves of Karelia', it made a lot of sense to continue writing thematic albums, but this time I wanted to travel a lot further in history than the Second World War and went straight to tales about creation of the Nordic world, ancient gods of the north and majestic nature. The colorful theme also inspired me to write the musically most diverseWOLFHEART album and also bring the biggest variation of vocals than ever before, putting Lauri and Vageliss in their well-earned spotlight."

OBSIDIOUS Premieres Performance Video for New Song, "I Am"

PRE-ORDER

Modern progressive metal outfit OBSIDIOUS is now releasing a brand new performance video for the new single, "I Am." The track is taken from the band's upcoming debut album, 'Iconic,' which will be released tomorrow, October 28, 2022 via Season of Mist! The video was shot during the band's performance at the mighty Euroblast festival, which took place in September 2022. The video can be seen below.

OBSIDIOUS comments: "The concept of the lyrics of this song is a little more abstract. It is the personification of a feeling speaking to its host, presenting itself and convincing the host to embrace it and ultimately succumb to it. It is like the biblical story of temptation being represented by the devil, but, in this case, without the willpower to resist.”

'Iconic' can be pre-ordered on physical formats HERE while you can pre-save the album to all streaming services HERE.

Modern metallers Obsidious launch their wonderfully intricate and musically-accomplished new album, Iconic, via Season of Mist. The group—featuring Linus Klausenitzer (bass), Rafael Trujillo (guitars), Sebastian Lanser (drums), and vocalist Javi Perera (vocals)—come from distinguished and lettered origins in Obscura, Alkaloid, Eternity’s End, and Juggernaut. Obsidious, however, are a different creature entirely. Iconic is technical but not officious. The album breathes intensity but expands upon it with mellifluent dexterity. With Obsidious, there’s always a hook. The early release of and positive feedback from video singles “Under Black Skies,” “Sense of Lust,” and the title track illustrates these qualities well. Iconic builds upon a prestigious foundation, but its vision isn’t restricted to its tenets.

“We consider ourselves the modern evolution of progressive and technical metal,” bassist Linus Klausenitzer says. “To name a few bands: Dream Theater, Devin Townsend, Meshuggah, Opeth, Between the Buried and Me, Protest the Hero, Periphery, and Haken. As such, our music asks for many different moods and vibes. Javi’s vocals reinforce that idea, adding meaning and drama to it. While we still work as session musicians, Obsidious is now our main priority.”

Obsidious crystallized after Klausenitzer, Trujillo, and Lanser departed amicably from fellow German tech-metallers Obscura in 2020. Named after black volcanic glass, the group’s moniker exudes something dark, of fiery origin, in a state of final transformation. Metaphorically, the name Obsidious offers a nearly limitless platform for expression and advancement. However, it was only when the trio brought on newcomer Perera—whose growls and full-toned voice are first-rate—were the multi-national outfit officially codified. Interestingly enough, the newly-joined frontman couldn’t even meet his bandmates while the band wrote, recorded, and filmed videos for Iconic due to the pandemic. Yet, the technologically-apt foursome made it work.

Iconic is an album of manifold extremes. “Sense of Lust,” “I Am,” and “Devotion,” for example, pivot on heavy rhythmic axes, their intense grooves seamlessly unifying with ample doses of atmospheric dissonance. “Under Black Skies,” “Delusion,” and the title track, on the other hand, are nimbly expeditious, with Perera’s considerable vocal talents complementing Trujillo, Klausenitzer, and Lanser’s angularly-involved, smartly-experimental songcraft. As for “Iron Dust,” “Lake of Afterlife,” and the massive chorus in the ferocious “Bound by Fire,” they offer a more straightforward (yet ebullient) musical and aesthetic posture. Throughout Iconic, Obsidious impress with their artistic inventiveness and creative expanse.

“Seventy-five percent of the band members were part of Obscura, so we knew what most of our fans like and what they don’t,” says Klausenitzer. “When we decided to integrate clean vocals, we knew that the reactions would be controversial. But we like to push the boundaries. We don’t like to stand still musically—we want to add something fresh to metal. This is why this band is so special for some listeners already.”

Lyrically, Perera tackles human-relatable topics throughout Iconic. While his modern metal peers abstractly traverse the vagaries of the universe, the singer hits home where and when it matters. Disaster in any form is trauma-inducing, and this is at the heart of Under Black Skies, where a tremendous yet preventable calamity descends on a petty yet desperate populace. BDSM, an uncommon topic in metaldom, carries through “Sense of Lust.” Here, sex and the power of and subsequent joy by the submissive are explored. The title track, “Iconic,” discusses dementia. Perera’s profession outside of Obsidious is in healthcare, and he’s seen firsthand how the mental disorder traps and torments. Iconic is a showcase in multiplicity.

“This album does not have a concept per se in terms of lyrics or an underlying storyline,” vocalist Javi Perera says. “The songs on this album touch on subjects of diverse nature, and there are even some songs that narrate personal experiences. But what I can consider as a common denominator in the album is the absence of constraints on a compositional or stylistic level, allowing us the freedom to shift between different musical genres as long as the song requires it. I always consider that we, as artists and musicians, are at the service of the music and not the other way around.”

Extensive pre-production aided in Obsidious handling a pandemic-era recording process for Iconic. For the official sessions, the group spread out parts to several different studios. Firstly, Lanser kicked Iconic into gear by recording drums at Lanser Studios in Salzburg, Austria. The rest of Obsidious holed up in Woodshed Studios in Fürth, Germany, where producer V. Santura (Triptykon, Obscura) tracked guitars, bass, vocals, synths, and sound effects. Vocal overdubs and additional soundscaping were taken to TheRedHouse Studio in Cambridge, England. Obsidious then handed the finalized pieces back to V. Santura to mix and master. Even though Iconic was a non-linear undertaking, it sounds absolutely monumental.

“The pre-production was very professional,” says Klausenitzer. “So, we already had an idea of what we wanted the songs to sound like—we had a specific sonic goal in mind. We had already worked with V. Santura before, so we knew what to expect in that regard. The recording sessions were, if anything, straightforward. When V. Santura completed the final master, we knew we had created something unique and special—the Obsidious sound!”

Obisidious are ready to deploy their unique brand of hooky neoteric metal on Iconic. From Trujillo’s wickedly clever riffs and Lanser’s artful drumming to Klausenitzer’s superb counterpoint and Perera’s soaring vocals/venomous spits, songs like “Under Black Skies,” “Iconic,” “Bound by Fire,” and “Nowhere” brim with cool calculation and aggressive spontaneity. They storm normality not only musically and lyrically. The monolithic cover piece by French graphic artist Adrien Bousson (Rotting Christ, Khonsu) also transcends convention. Obsidious are poised for a breakthrough on Iconic. Prepare for metal’s modern metamorphosis!
