Volbeat Announce New Album "God Of Angels Trust" + Drop Video for "By a Monster's Hand"

VOLBEAT — Michael Poulsen (vocals, guitar), and Jon Larsen (drums), and Kaspar Boye Larsen (bass) — are thrilled to announce their ninth album God Of Angels Trust. This album arrives on June 6 via longtime label Republic/Universal. Pre-order it here.

The album will coincide with plenty of summer touring on the band's "Greatest Of All Tours Worldwide" with further dates and details below.

Today, the band shares the first taste of new music via the video for the first single "By a Monster's Hand." The song is a mid-paced riff-fest with no concessions to standard meter, juxtaposing pummeling rhythms with point-counterpoint hooks.

Watch the video, which splices footage of Volbeat in their most natural state of performing, all the while following an ominously unsettling and familiar face, here.

The video was produced by Ghost Atomic and directed by Adam Rothlein, the same team that lensed videos for prior Volbeat hits "Shotgun Blues," "Die To Live," and "Leviathan."

With God Of Angels Trust, The Danish band — which has scored ten #1 songs on the Billboard Mainstream Rock airplay chart, the most ever for a band based outside North America — has thrown caution to the wind, ignored comfort zones, and paid little heed to traditional songwriting in the search for something more immediate and surprising.

The end result will thrill Volbeat's dedicated legion of fans.

"In the past, I've taken a long time to write and obsessed over so many elements of the songs before finishing them," says Poulsen. "This time, I wanted to make a Volbeat record without thinking too much about it. Instead of following any kind of structure I said, 'Okay, there are no rules. I can do anything I want. I can start with a chorus or do songs that are just a bunch of verses stacked on top of each other. Anything goes.' That was freeing for me and made it exciting to write this album."

Poulsen's excitement to thwart convention is palpable throughout God Of Angels Trust, a punchy, crunchy album that's undeniably Volbeat, yet marches to a fresh new metallic and melodic energy.

Poulsen started working on songs for the follow-up to 2021's Servant of the Mind in the summer of 2024. Volbeat was taking a year-long break from touring to give Michael a chance to recover from throat surgery and to tour with his death metal band, Asinhell. Driven equally by his excitement to record a new Volbeat album and by his determination not to follow convention, Poulsen worked on songs for a mere three weeks with bandmates drummer Jon Larsen and bassist Kaspar Boye Larsen. Amazingly, they worked on a new song at every rehearsal. Three weeks into the process, Volbeat had arranged half of God Of Angels Trust. That's when Poulsen decided that having no rules meant he could follow his muse wherever it took him, and he veered off on a different path. He and the band still wrote and rehearsed two songs a week, but they started composing more familiar rock songs that drew from traditional elements.

The band entered the studio with their longtime producer Jacob Hansen in the fall of 2024. As with the songwriting, Poulsen wanted to work quickly and rely on instinct, so they just plugged in and started to play. To keep the music sounding urgent and immediate, Volbeat recorded live in the studio, playing as few takes as possible before moving from one song to the next.

When it came time to add lead guitar, there was no question that Volbeat would tap Flemming C. Lund, who currently tours with the band and worked with Michael in Asinhell. A mere 13 days after they started working with Hansen, Volbeat were finished.

As impressive as it is that Volbeat wrote and recorded an entire album in about five weeks, what's more incredible is that God Of Angels Trust sounds as fleshed out, eclectic, and fulfilling as albums that have taken 10 times longer (or more) to create. In the end, creating such a strong album so quickly was a tremendous challenge that demanded Zen-like calm, a joy for exploration, maximal creativity, and razor-sharp concentration to pull off.

"In some ways, it feels like we've come full circle,” Poulsen explains. "If you start drawing a circle over an extended period of time, eventually you've going to get back where you started, and that's how I feel now. I've dealt with medical operations, lineup changes, and all these things, and now it feels like a rebirth. It doesn't feel like we're doing our ninth studio album, it feels like we're on our first album again and there's something really refreshing about that."

Volbeat will return to the road on the "Greatest Of All Tours Worldwide," beginning in June and running throughout 2025. The tour begins in June with a co-headline Canadian run with Three Days Grace and special guests Wage War, which will be followed by headline treks in the U.S. with special guests Halestorm and The Ghost Inside, and Europe and the UK with special guests Bush and Gel. French synthwave icon Carpenter Brut has just released his brand new album Leather Terror today via Universal Records. Leather Terror is the second in Carpenter Brut’s Leather album trilogy, the next chapter following his widely acclaimed 2018 album Leather Teeth. That album featured in numerous Best Album lists across the board of rock, alternative and electronic music that year. Kerrang championed the mysterious French artist as one of the Best Live Bands On Earth whilst Carpenter Brut was also honoured as a performer at the Metal Hammer awards.

While Leather Teeth was in part a celebratory take on ‘80s glam rock, in his new opus, Carpenter Brut – across the space of twelve tracks – gets more malevolent, documenting the rise of his protagonist as a serial killer who wants to take revenge on all those who mistreated him when he was younger.

Leather Terror reflects both a serial killer, and an artist, in their prime: Bold and daring while full of shock and awe, creating a true spectacle out of great darkness with a flamboyant disregard for rules.

The albums form the soundtrack of an imagined movie from 1987. The previous record introduced the story of Bret Halford, an introverted science student. He liked a girl who didn’t like him and much preferred the team’s star quarterback. Bret got mad and tried to create a concoction that would allow him to control them all, but ends up disfigured and decides instead to become a rock star. This is how he will seduce the girl, and all other girls: By becoming Leather Teeth, singer of Leather Patrol.

Regarding the album, Carpenter Brut has said, "After spending much of 2018 touring, I had decided to take a long break to compose the new album of the trilogy. The pandemic confirmed that my choice to stay home was the right one. I ended up taking over a year and a half to compose this album. I made a lot of decisions with the time I had that I wouldn't have had time to make if the pandemic hadn't happened. I wanted to make the whole thing as massive as possible. There is no guitar on this album. I did everything with synths. Even though I didn't know exactly how I wanted the album to sound at first, I knew I wanted it to be massive and violent.”

Leather Terror is flanked by two lead singles, the colossal synthrock anthem “Imaginary Fire” featuring vocalist Greg Puciato (The Dillinger Escape Plan, Killer Be Killed, The Black Queen) as well as “The Widow Maker,” featuring Alex Westaway of Gunship on the pummelling synth pop track.

See the video for “Imaginary Fire” directed by Dehn Sora below.

Here’s what the media has been saying about Leather Terror:

Leather Terror is an album of pure, devilish joy from an artist who completely understands what they're doing … Metal and synthwave gloriously clash throughout, and it's brilliant.” —Kerrang

“If the majority of Leather Terror doesn’t just make you want to get up and dance to all of its sublimely banging, schlocky glory then there’s a very good chance that Carpenter Brut’s fictional killer got to you in one of his earlier installments.” —Metal Hammer

“Carpenter Brut is back to get you dancing! Leather Terror is all the driving, quasi-industrial, synth stuff you've come to expect and love. This time you're getting a diverse roster of guest spots from Greg Puciato (Dillinger Escape Plan), Ulver, Sylvaine, and more.” —Metal Injection

“Despite the lack of guitars, Leather Terror is often just as vicious as anything from the world of metal as drums pound relentlessly, vocals range from the ethereal to the demonic, and looming keyboards slice and dice with ruthless efficiency through the album’s more aggressive cuts. In movie trilogies, the second entry can often prove to be the weakest but this isn’t the case here as the sequel expands and even improves on the superb original. Roll on the final part.” —Ghost Cult

Carpenter Brut will also be returning to North America this summer with a series of 13 tour dates announced for the U.S. and Canada, kicking off August 18 in Los Angeles and running through September 3 in Silver Spring, Maryland.

North America Tour Planned For Summer 2022

French synthwave icon Carpenter Brut has released his brand new single “The Widow Maker,” which features Alex Westaway of Gunship who lends his voice on the pummelling synth pop track. It’s the latest song to be taken from Carpenter Brut’s forthcoming album Leather Terror, out April 1 via Universal Music. The album is available to pre-order now HERE.

The dramatic video for “The Widow Maker” was directed by the Deka Brothers and stars actor Dylan Sprouse as Bret Halford aka Leather Teeth, the protagonist of Carpenter Brut’s album and singer of Leather Patrol.

Leather Teeth is a true rock star and a ruthless avenger, who inflicts vengeance on those who stand between him and what he desires. Bret flicks through the yearbook, and overcome by hallucinatory delirium, he fantasizes about getting his revenge on Kendra, the cheerleader he was madly in love with at high school, and the jocks she preferred. His desire for revenge ends up turning against him and he becomes haunted by the corpses of those he wishes to send to an early grave.

Speaking about the video collaboration, Dylan Sprouse says, “I sent Carpenter Brut a comic I made with a note that read, ‘As I've written the entirety of this comic series with your music on repeat, I felt it only natural to send you this. I owe it to you.’ That was the first time we communicated and I believe we found ourselves to have some shred of creative kinship in our different mediums since then.”

Sprouse adds, “Over a year of us chatting back and forth about finding an opportunity to collaborate on something together, he hit me with the idea to portray Bret Halford in a video of his with the Deka Brothers as directors. We chatted character, background, content and I was all in immediately. Especially because it gave me the opportunity to take out some aggression with an oversized buck knife and some confetti cannons after a few short days of filming, a lot of running, a lot of stabbing, a lot of spiked studs, platform boots and a sprained ankle during a ‘bad drug trip’ scene. I hope you all get as pumped up watching this as I was filming it. Long Live Bret Halford.”

Regarding the single, Carpenter Brut says, “While talking with a musician friend of mine, he said, ‘This song, it makes you want big guitars like Rammstein.’ Inwardly, I ruled out the guitar option, but for the vocals, his idea worked for me and I thought it would be cool to have a big industrial voice on this track, like Till Lindemann for example, but in the end I asked Alex Westaway (from Gunship) to sing on it. It's nothing like Lindemann vocally, but I love Alex’s androgynous register a la Brian Molko and what he did with the song.

“There was this interesting ambivalence, even paradoxical between the martial side of the music and Alex's voice, which is quite pop, which makes this track both industrial and synth pop. As usual with the singers I work with, I gave Alex a word or two, a theme, and then he came up with his own lyrics. I really like this song, because for me it's Carpenter Brut with a mainstream feel.”

“The Widow Maker” follows the release of Leather Terror’s lead single and colossal synthrock anthem “Imaginary Fire” earlier this year, which features guest vocals from Greg Puciato of The Dillinger Escape Plan.

Leather Terror is the second in Carpenter Brut’s Leather album trilogy, the next chapter following his widely acclaimed 2018 album Leather Teeth. Austin Meade Has a "Loser Mentality" — LISTEN

Austin Meade has a loser mentality!

The gifted singer, songwriter, and guitarist has shared the brand new song "Loser Mentality," and it's a contemplative ballad that showcases his gift for relatable lyrics and wordplay, as well as the thoughtful side of his musical personality.

"Loser Mentality" examines the cyclical nature of culture and how what was once uncool will eventually become exactly the opposite. Meade even welcomes the return of the '90s in the catchy chorus, since what's old is always new again.

The song is a one-off release, as Meade is putting the finishing touches on a new album due out next year.

Listen to "Loser Mentality" below.

"'Loser Mentality' is a personal reminder to stop giving a shit about what all the cool kids are doing," Meade affirms. "You can't make something new and different by copying the cool kids; then it all looks and sounds the same. Go against the trends and be a loser for a while; they'll eventually look back and start copying you."

Meade, who is a little bit country, a little bit rock, and a whole lotta heart, recently shared the slightly NSFW video for "Dopamine Drop." The song appears on Meade's Snakefarm debut Black Sheep, out now. Get it here.

Marking the beginning of a second trilogy of albums, 'To The End' serves as something of a prologue to the first three MEMORIAM albums. Working backwards and narrating the life story of the leader whose demise was depicted in the first trilogy, the lyrics on the album may play out in a fictional realm, but they incorporate inspiration from real life. A central theme of war is colored with political fulminations and everyday experiences that combine to create a cohesive and enthralling chronicle.

The four-piece returned to producer, Russ Russell, for the recording of 'To The End'. For the first time, the band demoed the songs and entered the studio with a new level of preparedness. Coupled with their close relationship with Russell, this created an environment that allowed for greater experimentation, as demonstrated by the diverse array of textures and sounds present on the nine tracks on the album.

From the earliest days of the band, they had their eye on the art of Dan Seagrave (Benediction, Dismember, Hypocrisy, Suffocation, etc) as an accompaniment to their music. Having created the artwork for the first three MEMORIAM albums, he has also created the cover for 'To The End'.

INCLUDES COVER OF BISHOP BRIGGS' "RIVER" — LISTEN

BRKN LOVE, the brainchild of Toronto native Justin Benlolo, released their self-titled debut album earlier this year via Spinefarm Records. On November 19, the band will release a deluxe edition of the record, featuring four newly recorded tracks, including a cover of Bishop Briggs' "River."

Listen to "Riverhere.

"I heard 'River' on L.A.'s KROQ years ago and immediately thought it could really great song to cover," recalls Benlolo. "I got caught up in the bluesy, soulful nature of the tune, especially Bishop's soaring vocal. Time passed and we never considered recording anything that wasn't original — until now."

He continues, "We really wanted to show people a different side of this band, and with everything that is happening in the world right now, we hope to spread a little joy. Amidst the craziness, we decided to push through and record new music for all of you because we know how desperately music is needed right now. We are here to shine a little light in the darkness and we hope this cover achieves just that. Thank you very much for the love and support. Stay safe and be well."

The album, produced by Joel Hamilton (Highly Suspect, Pretty Lights), was recorded live to tape, preserving a raw and real feeling in the riffing tempered by relatable and emotional lyrics.

SAUL RELEASE EMOTIONAL FAN PARTICIPATION VIDEO FOR ACOUSTIC VERSION OF ACCLAIMED HIT SINGLE "BROTHER"

Music video by Saul performing Brother (Acoustic / Memorial Video). © 2020 Universal Music Operations Limited http://vevo.ly/5omY2q

BAND ASKED FANS TO CONTRIBUTE PHOTOS OF LOVED ONES THAT THEY'VE LOST FOR INCLUSION

On-the-rise rock quartet SAUL — brothers Blake Bedsaul [lead vocals] and Zach Bedsaul [lead guitar, backup vocals], William McIlravy [bass, backup vocals], and Myles Clayborne [drums]— have dropped the emotionally resonant video for the acoustic version of their acclaimed and incredibly personal hit single "Brother."

Saul reached out to their fans, known as "Equals," and asked them to share photos of loved ones that they have lost to be included in this video. The visual matches the intensely personal nature of the lyrics, which is a poignant lament on life and death. The track tells the story of the Bedsaul's late older brother, who passed away from H1N1 in 2009. The song resonates now more than ever as the world deals with various traumas due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The original version of "Brother" landed at No. 1 on SiriusXM Octane.

Saul previously teamed up with Revolver to premiere the video for "Trial By Fire."

The Iowa-based band is currently working on their upcoming Spinefarm Records full-length debut, due out later this year.

NEW ALBUM TRUTH & LIES OUT NOW

It's all about the ride, baby!

Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown have revealed the video for "Ride," which finds the band knuckling down (and dirty) on their instruments while in the back of a conversion van and plugging into amps stashed in the trunks of their cars.

"Sometimes it's too easy to miss magic moments while you're worrying about the future," says Bryant. "To me, 'Ride' is a reminder to find the good in the present while you're in it. I don’t wanna look back and wish I would've lived life any different. I wanna milk all these moments for all they're worth. Whatever comes next can't affect right now."

The track appears on the band's latest album Truth & Lies — out now via Snakefarm Records.

Additionally, Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown will be going live on American Songwriter's Facebook page on May 29 at 3PM ET for the "Behind the Mic" series, where they'll be playing songs and answering fan questions.
