Axe shredders can now conjure the wickedly distorted riffs and eerie, melodic dissonance that Necrofier harnessed on their most recent album, Burning Shadows in the Southern Night. Idiot Box Effects has blessed the band with their very own custom guitar pedal.

"The new Echo Drive is a collaboration between me and the KILLER black metal band Necrofier", says Atarimatt, who's been making effects and noiseboxes full time under the name IdiotBox since 2011. "Plug this sucker in and bring on TOTAL SOUTHERN DARKNESS!!!"

The Necrofier Echo drive is a tube screamer-style overdrive pedal. It runs into two separate echo circuits. The left switch is for echoes, while the right switch does overdrive. Each knob is named after a different raw ingredient in the band's evil alchemy: Reflection (echo 1), Chaos (echo 2), Alchemy (echo signal mix), Flame (overdrive volume), Strike (overdrive intensity) and Darkness (tone).

A limited run of first-edition, autographed Necrofier Echo Drive pedals are available on Bandcamp while supplies last. The pedal can also be purchased through the IdiotBox Effects webstore.

Deep within the scorching cauldron of Texas, the alchemists of Necrofier have brewed another potent dose of American black metal with their sophomore full-length, ‘Burning Shadows in the Southern Night.’ The Houston four-piece honors the time-tested virtues of traditional black and heavy metal, even taking an organic sonic approach, tapping seven-time Grammy-nominated producer and engineer Joel Hamilton (Unsane, Tom Waits, Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown, etc.) to lend his magic touch for a natural sound.

“The goal going into the new record was to start setting ourselves apart from our contemporaries,” explains Necrofier drummer Dobber Beverly. “One of those ways was changing what the record sounded like. Moving away from the clinical and sterile nature that most productions suffer from and back into a real room with real instruments and performances. Our friend and esteemed producer/engineer Joel Hamilton had expressed interest in venturing back into the metal world and offered to make the record with us at his facility, Studio G Brooklyn. The results will speak for themselves hopefully, as this record breathes and spits fire wherever it’s played.”

“Dobber and Joel have become good friends since they recorded the last Oceans of Slumber album with him, adds Necrofier guitarist and vocalist Bakka. "After that, Joel wanted to record something heavy, so we made the trip to New York City to record in his legendary studio. It was an amazing experience in a great studio; besides having all the gear, he also created an environment where we challenged ourselves and brought everything up to the next level.”

‘Burning Shadows in the Southern Night’ doesn’t just simply pick off where Necrofier’s debut album left off, but displays a conscientious effort to double down on the elements that made ‘Prophecies of Eternal Darkness’ successful. The solos are more plentiful and intricate, the hooks are more anthemic, and the overall musicianship is bolder and more daring. Speaking of the band’s evolution, Bakka explains, “I think this collection of songs represents us very well. We have grown together as a band and it shows in the new songs. Also, for this record we flew to NYC and recorded all day long for 10 days straight. I love recording this way because it captures a certain magic. The whole band is immersed in the process and it's all we would think, do, live and breathe during the process.”

Another core facet of Necrofier’s allure is being a black metal band from Texas. “Where you live always helps shape someone,” says Bakka. “It helps shape our style and tone in ways, it’s hot most of the year, so as we burn, it gives us warmer tones and more of a heavy metal influence than when compared to our brothers from the North."

To that avail, Necrofier isn’t your typical black metal band, and so this isn’t your typical black metal record as there’s a healthy amount of traditional metal influences, particularly within the guitar work. While conceptually, the band doesn’t heavily rely on Satanic themes, exploring deeper human philosophies and the occult like burning for your dreams or spiraling out on a psychedelic trip and exploring the beyond. “While there isn’t overt satanic worship in the lyrics, I would still say that he is a friend of ours,” Bakka cheekily says. “There are Occult themes on this record, but at the same time, it does take a philosophical approach.”

Further illustrating the influence of their environment, Necrofier also heavily explores one of Southern America’s most fabled myths. “The new record touches on selling your soul at the crossroads,” adds Bakka. “I like to take a different approach and touch on the elements of the esoteric world and dive into the forbidden or hidden that surrounds us in our lives every day.”

As the Texan black metal outlaws saddle up for record two, they are leading the charge as one of the contemporary purveyors of black metal revivalism. ‘Burning Shadows in the Southern Night’ is certain to elicit a sense of nostalgia for those who dare to lay ears on this vicious new offering.

Necrofier Announce Custom Effect Pedal

One of the ways Necrofier are making a mark on American black metal is their guitar tone. After all, the band do hail from Houston, Texas, where the unforgiving heat causes their tremolo picking to burn with more fire than other keepers of the black flame.

Now, axe men can conjure the wickedly distorted riffs and eerie, melodic dissonance that Necrofier harnessed on their most recent album, Burning Shadows in the Southern Night.

Each knob is named after a different raw ingredient in the band's evil alchemy: Reflection (echo 1), Chaos (echo 2), Alchemy (echo signal mix), Flame (overdrive volume), Strike (overdrive intensity) and Darkness (tone).

"We are blessed to announce this unholy alliance with Idiot Box effects", says Necrofier frontman Christian "Bakka" Larson. "The grit of the overdrive and the space of the echo helps create a dark and menacing effect".

A limited run of first-edition, autographed Necrofier Echo Drive pedals are available on Bandcamp while supplies last. The pedal can also be purchased through the IdiotBox Effects webstore.

Necrofier Hosting Reddit AMA

The four horsemen of Necrofier are saddling up for this year's Decibel Magazine Tour. The Houston black metal band will be riding high from Roseville, California all the way to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for 20+ nights of hell-raising with their tourmates Hulder, Devil Master and Worm.

Hear what life is like out on the left-hand path when Necrofier front man Christian "Bakka" Larson joins the black metal subreddit this Thursday, February 15 at 11 am Central Time. You can ask him anything: what are his favorite amps and pedals, how he got into organizing Hell's Heroes, why it is, in fact, okay to toss a severed pig's head around in the pit.

"2024 is starting off crazy with the Decibel Tour and Hell's Heroes", says Bakka. "Ask me questions on Thursday before all the madness begins".

Decibel premiered Necrofier's sinister video for "Destroying Angels".

While it's awfully hard to pick just one, "Destroying Angels" might be the most satantic track on Burning Shadows in the Southern Night. Dobber Beverly is so cold and merciless behind the drum kit that his fills could flay flesh. "Sacrifice my life in blood", Bakka screams. His bloodlust sounds so murderous, it's like he's being burned at the stake by those searing guitar riffs.

"'Destroying Angels is about transforming yourself into something new after learning things you believed to be true were not. The song was also written while on mushrooms and lyrically is inspired by Selim from The Devil's Blood. RIP'

Watch what happens when a harem of witches catch an innocent princess wandering through their enchanted forest.

Necrofier Hitching a Ride on Decibel Magazine Tour

Necrofier kept the black flame burning in 2023.   Back at the beginning of summer, their new album was hailed upon arrival by Distorted Sound as "another stunning slab of black metal". A&P Reacts praised the way the band's raw energy compliments the warmer touches of GRAMMY-nominated producer Joel Hamilton. Burning Shadows in the Southern Night also landed on Heaviest of Art's year-end list for best cover art.

The Houston black metal band are now prepared to keep all that fiery momentum going well into the new year. These four horsemen are saddling up for Decibel Magazine's 2024 Tour.

Headlining the longest-running metal tour in North America next year are Northwest black metal executioners
Hulder. This will mark Decibel's 11th nationwide tour. It'll also celebrate the magazine's 20th anniversary. Joining the party are Philly vampunk warriors Devil Master and Floridian blackened doom swam things Worm.

"Total Southern Darkness across America!" says Necrofier guitarist and vocalist Christian Bakka Larson. "We are excited to embark on this journey with such good company".

Necrofier premiere new album with full album stream

PRE-ORDER

NECROFIER are streaming 'Burning Shadows in the Southern Night' in full over on Black Metal Promotion. Bask in the dark and fiery glory of all ten tracks HERE.

'Burning Shadows in the Southern Night' makes strides where second albums often stumble. It doubles down on the heavy metal guitar workouts that made this scorching black metal band's first album unique. But while these Texans still honor the malignant virtues of black metal, this time around, they switched things up by taking an old-school approach to the studio. Their new album was produced by GRAMMY nominee Joel Hamilton, whose nimble hand makes these songs sound lean and thunderous.

"Joel is one of the world's best engineers" says Christian "Bakka" Larson, the band's vocalist and guitarist. "He wanted to record something heavy, so we made the trip to New York City to record at legendary Studio G."

"With a full vintage Neve front end and a host of Telefunken and Neumann microphones, we tracked the record the old way", adds drummer Dobber Beverly.

With its sweltering melodic leads, lead single "Burnt by the Sacred Flame" already showed what separates
NECROFIER  from their contemporaries. But the album packs plenty more heat. It opens with ominous piano and mournful, operatic vocals before plummeting into the raging void of "Total Southern Darkness". "Whispers That Burn in the Dark" is whipped along by blast beats that pound the air like a horde of bats, while the merciless climb of "Destroying Angels" is spearheaded by Bakka's demonic roar.

"Texas has a style all of its own," Bakka says. "We are always trying to outdo the rest of the world".

'Burning Shadows in the Southern Night" is out tomorrow, June 2, 2023. The album can be pre-saved across all streaming platforms
HERE and pre-ordered through the Season of Mist website HERE

The rise of American black metal is a cult movement whose vast influence and growth cannot be ignored. Houston’s Necrofier carries this torch, embodying the hallmarks of melodic black metal while embracing their Texas roots, delivering what can only be described as total Southern darkness as they bridge the divide between true Norwegian black metal and American gothic.

In the fall of 2018, fate coalesced when vocalist/guitarist Bakka Larson (VENOMOUS MAXIMUS, NIGHT COBRA) saw an open call on social media from drummer Dobber Beverly (OCEANS OF SLUMBER, INSECT WARFARE) who was looking to work on a traditional heavy metal project. Larson had already been working on black metal songs as an outlet to explore the themes of the supernatural and unknown and exploring this darkness, so he jumped on the opportunity and quickly reached out. The two immediately connected over their shared passion to create dark, old school music in which they could inject their Southern flair.

The duo eventually recruited Beverly’s OCEANS OF SLUMBER counterpart and bassist Mat Valentine and soon wrote and released a debut EP, ‘Visions in Fire,’ which channeled the spirit of late-era DISSECTION, WATAIN, CLOAK, and TRIBULATION while staying true to their own homegrown sensibilities.

Not long after the EP release, the band scored an opening slot with UADA. Needing a second guitarist to fill out the sound, Josh Bokemeyer (CHURCH OF DISGUST) was eventually tapped to fill that role, completing the band’s inception.

The four-piece later released a music video for the EP title track and went on to perform with a vast array of their black metal brethren such as 1349, Goatwhore, and Cloak, including an appearance at a coveted SXSW showcase. Now, the band is emerging from the darkness of 2021, ready to fan the unholy flames and finally release their devastating debut full-length, ‘Prophecies of Eternal Darkness.’

NECROFIER Shares Official Video for New Song, "Betrayal of the Queen"

Texan black metal battalion NECROFIER will be unleashing their debut full-length record, 'Prophecies of Eternal Darkness,' onto the masses on October 22 via Season of Mist Underground Activists! The band is now unveiling the official music video for their new single, "Betrayal of the Queen." The video, which was created by Dwayne Cathey, can be found below.

'Prophecies of Eternal Darkness' is available for pre-orders HERE.
