GRAMERCY ARMS releases sophisticated & endearing fourth album 'The Making Of The Making Of' via Magic Door Records

"A fabulous and fresh slice of positivity, wrapped up in a finely-tuned package of upbeat and harmonious pop-rock that will leave you wanting more and checking local concert listings to see if the band is heading your way. Impeccably performed; superbly arranged and produced" ~ The Spill Magazine

"Perfectly straddles popularity and poise, chart potential and also satisfies more discerning tastes... Gramercy Arms is that rare thing. It is a band that makes great albums AND writes killer singles" ~ Big Takeover Magazine

"Wistful, bittersweet and soaring power pop... With echoes of the likes of Teenage Fanclub and Dinosaur Junior, as well as the classicism of 80s indie-pop, it’s yearning and hooky in all the right places, a gleaming melodic pick me up" ~ God is in the TV Zine

Bringing a little light into our lives, NYC-based collective Gramercy Arms has released their fourth album 'The Making Of The Making Of' via Montclair, NJ-based Magic Door Record Label. With nine tracks on offer, this album presents a varied smorgasbord of superb radio-friendly indie pop-rock gems and more intimate acoustic offerings. The band also present a new video for 'Never Say Anything (Magic Door Session)'.

A loose treasure-trove of musicians and artists, masterminded by Dave Derby (The Dambuilders, Lloyd Cole) and producer Ray Ketchem (Guided by Voices, Luna, Elk City), Gramercy Arms is inspired by the artistic heyday of ‘70s and ‘80s New York, creating addictive indie pop with exquisite hook-laden melodies and lyrics that will have you floating back in time and remembering your favorite mistake.

With many of the songs recorded during the same sessions for the band’s 2023 'Deleted Scenes' album, 'The Making Of …' is decidedly more of a band album with a looser and more raucous approach featuring live in-studio performances and an even wider array of contributors.

Produced, recorded and mixed by Ray Ketchem at Magic Door Recording in Montclair, NJ, it was mastered by Ketchem and award-winning engineer Greg Calbi (John Lennon, David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen, Talking Heads, Patti Smith, Tom Petty).

Earlier, Gramercy Arms released 'Never Say Anything', a gorgeously performed paean to paranoid times featuring Lysa Opfer (Aeon Station) and Mark Lizotte (Diesel), and 'After the After Party', a rueful power pop gem about chances missed and taken, featuring longtime collaborators Kevin March (Guided by Voices, The Dambuilders, Shudder to Think), Hilken Mancini (Fuzzy, the Monsieurs), Rainy Orteca (Joan As Police Woman, Dead Air) and Mike Errico.

Both albums are loaded with talent, involving Doug Gillard (Guided by Voices, Nada Surf, Cobra Verde, Death of Samantha), Sean Eden (Luna), Phoebe Summersquash (Small Factory), Renée LoBue (Elk City, Flowers of America), Kendall Meade (Mascott), Verena Wiesendanger (Semi Gloss), Claudia Chopek (Bright Eyes, The Little River Band, Echo of the Ghost), John Leon (Roky Erickson, Royal Arctic Institute), Rafa Maciejak (Lloyd Cole and the Negatives, Ivy), Jules Verdone, Richard Alwyn-Fisher (King Canutes, The Winter Drinks), Steve Hurley (Gigolo Aunts), Carl Baggaley (Elk City, Royal Arctic Institute), Peter Hess (Phillip Glass Ensemble, Slavic Soul Partyand Gary Burton (Dovedale). 'Deleted Scenes' also involves the legendary Lloyd Cole.

"I initially thought about doing a double album and then decided against it. To me 'Deleted Scenes' and 'The Making Of The Making Of' are companion pieces and part of a larger work. I think of them as two sides of a double album and may release them as a double vinyl album in the future. To me, there is an understated, almost dark horse element to “The Making Of …”  that gives it a special charm. In many ways 'Deleted Scenes' was more of the ‘obvious’ A-tracks, whereas 'The Making Of …' is just more fun. Songs like 'Lux', 'Susan' and 'The Long Game' capture that for me. The fact that the album has 4 different drummers with different feels and approaches has a lot to do with that because it still hangs together," says Dave Derby.

"Even though these songs came from the same sessions, this album was much more of a band record whereas “Deleted Scenes” was more about me and Kevin March building the tracks up together. Many of these songs were live full-band takes. I think that approach shows up in the final versions."

'The Making Of the Making Of' album is out now, available from fine music platforms, including Apple Music, Spotify and Bandcamp. Their record release party takes place on April 26 at Berlin NYC with support from The Gershwin Brothers and the Hilken Mancini Band.

Gramercy Arms presents 'Never Say Anything', a paean to paranoid times ahead of their fourth album

NYC indie pop collective Gramercy Arms presents 'Never Say Anything', a gorgeously performed paean to paranoid times. This is the second taste of the band's fourth album 'The Making Of the Making Of', released via Magic Door Record Label.

Gramercy Arms is a revolving collective of musicians and artists, masterminded by Dave Derby (The Dambuilders, Lloyd Cole) and producer Ray Ketchem (Elk City, Guided By Voices, Luna). This particular track features shimmering acoustic guitars by Derby, moody basslines by Lysa Opfer (Aeon Station) and haunting sonic textures by Mark Lizotte (Diesel) on guitar, vocals and effects.

“Never Say Anything' is a song about unease and paranoia in the strange environment we inhabit right now. The fear of not knowing if someone is listening in. In some ways, it was inspired by the films 'The Conversation' and 'The Secret Lives of Others', which deal with surveillance and swirling paranoia," says Dave Derby.

"We did two separate takes of 'Never Say Anything' during the 'Deleted Scenes' / 'Making Of' sessions. The ‘band’ version with its frenetic early Feelies-inspired drumming fits the mood of 'Deleted Scenes' better. This version is darker and sweeter at the same time and my personal favorite of the two. Lysa Opfer’s harmonic bass parts are sublime and gorgeous. Mark Lizotte, true to form, recorded parts in his Sydney, Australia home studio, taking the song to new unexpected heights."

The accompanying video, created by Debora Francis, features members of the Gramercy Arms collective, including Jessie Kilguss, Renee LoBue, Richard Alwyn Fisher, Ray Ketchem, Dave Derby, Sean Eden, Gary Burton, Claudia Chopek, Lysa Opfer and Phoebe Summersquash.

Inspired by the artistic heyday of ‘70s and ‘80s-era New York City, Gramercy Arms makes addictive indie pop - exquisite hook-laden melodies filled with lyrics that will have you floating back in time and remembering your favorite mistake.

This album was produced, recorded and mixed by Ray Ketchem at Magic Door Recording in Montclair, NJ with mastering by Ketchem and award-winning engineer Greg Calbi (John Lennon, David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen, Talking Heads, Patti Smith, Tom Petty).

Earlier, Gramercy Arms released the lead track 'After the After Party', a rueful power pop gem about chances missed and taken, featuring longtime collaborators Kevin March (Guided by Voices, Shudder to Think, The Dambuilders), Hilken Mancini (Fuzzy, the Monsieurs), Rainy Orteca (Joan As Police Woman, Dead Air) and Mike Errico.

'Never Say Anything (Acoustic)' is out now, available from fine music platforms - Apple Music, Spotify, Bandcamp and elsewhere. 'The Making Of the Making Of' album, slated for release on April 26, is now available for pre-order.

Gramercy Arms announces new album, shares lead track 'After The After Party'

"A fabulous and fresh slice of positivity, wrapped up in a finely-tuned package of upbeat and harmonious pop-rock that will leave you wanting more and checking local concert listings to see if the band is heading your way. Impeccably performed; superbly arranged and produced" ~ The Spill Magazine

NYC-based Gramercy Arms presents 'After the After Party', a wistful, happy-sad power pop gem about chances missed and taken. Following up their 2023 album 'Deleted Scenes', this is the first taste of their fourth album 'The Making Of the Making Of', to be released via Magic Door Record Label.

Gramercy Arms is a revolving collective of musicians and artists, masterminded by Dave Derby (The Dambuilders, Lloyd Cole) and producer Ray Ketchem (Elk City, Guided By Voices, Luna).

This single features longtime collaborators Kevin March (Guided by Voices, Shudder to Think, The Dambuilders), Hilken Mancini (Fuzzy, the Monsieurs),Rainy Orteca (Joan As Police Woman, Dead Air) and Mike Errico.

Produced, recorded and mixed by Ray Ketchem at Magic Door Recording in Montclair, NJ, this record was mastered by Ketchem and award-winning engineer Greg Calbi (John Lennon, David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen, Talking Heads, Patti Smith, Tom Petty).

The video for 'After The After Party', created by Max Skaff, features members Jessie KilgussRenée LoBueRichard Alwyn Fisher, Ray KetchemDave DerbySean EdenGary BurtonClaudia ChopekLysa Opfer, and Phoebe Summersquash set against the backdrop of late-night footage of Manhattan and Brooklyn.

"I had the tune and general structure of the song lying around for a long time. For a long time I had the opening line ‘Do you suppose the door was already closed?” and the general vibe of the song but not much else. The song title and lyrical concept came for me while sitting at a bar in Brooklyn and overhearing a group of people talk about what they were going to do after an afterparty they were attending that night. I thought that that was a great title and general concept to anchor the song around. The song is about two people who’ve been chasing after each other for years but the stars never align until this one fated night where they are chasing after some magic that has been eluding them," says Dave Derby.

"The “somewhere out on along the seven” line in the middle eight came from another overheard comment I wrote in a notebook somewhere. “Where does she live?” “Somewhere out on the 7 … in Queens". I played the guitar solo, thinking it was a placeholder but Ray Ketchem, Kevin March and I fell in love with it and kept it."

Inspired by the artistic heyday of ‘70s and ‘80s-era New York City, Gramercy Arms makes addictive indie pop - exquisite hook-laden melodies filled with lyrics that will have you floating back in time and remembering your favorite mistake.

As of February 21, 'After The After Party' will be available across online platforms, such as Apple Music, Spotify, Bandcamp and elsewhere. 'The Making Of the Making Of' album will be released on April 26 and is now available for pre-order.

NYC's Gramercy Arms presents youthful reminiscence on 'Fucked Up and Beautiful' single. The 'Deleted Scenes' LP is out now

"Gentle and perfectly arranged, it is both calming and genuine, straightforward and talented, giving space and voice everywhere that the song and its story requires. A hidden Americana-indiepop gem, Gramercy Arms show that music truly is a journey"~ The Spill Magazine

"A slice of mature, soulful pop, gentle and refined, a swirl of gorgeous boy-girl harmonies, laced with elegant guitar lines and the perfect balance between a slightly nostalgic then and a now calling out for such astute, chart-friendly pop. A future classic" ~ Big Takeover Magazine

"Melancholic yet radiant, emotively shadowed but joyfully rousing" ~ Ringmaster Review

NYC indie rock outfit Gramercy Arms presents 'F*cked Up and Beautiful' (including the clean companion version: 'Messed Up and Beautiful'), the third single from their acclaimed third album 'Deleted Scenes', released by New Jersey-based Magic Door Record Label.

Opening with the couplet “Back in school she lived so decadently / She took literature and LSD”, this autobiographically-inspired song reflects on frontman Dave Derby's undergraduate love affair with a combination of humor, nostalgia, and wistfulness.

In addition to the core of Dave Derby (The DambuildersLloyd Cole), Kevin March (Guided By Voices, Shudder To Think, Quiz Showand Rainy Orteca (Joan As Police Woman), the song features gorgeous vocals by Verena Wiesendanger (Semi-Gloss) and lush pedal steel textures by John Leon (Royal Arctic Institute).

The accompanying video is a highly collaborative effort of band members recording themselves performing the song in remote locations. Featured here are Derby, Hilken Mancini (Fuzzy), Jessie Kilguss, Mike Errico, Doug Gillard (Guided by Voices), Chris Robertson (Elk City), Peter Hess (The Phillip Glass Ensemble), Gary Burton (Dovedale), Richard Alwyn Fisher (King Canutes), Phoebe Summersquash (Small Factory), as well as the Mack Family (Honey, Leila, and Theo).

“I guess you could say the basic video concept is what you might call a loose version of lo-tech sci-fi,” explains Derby. “The members of the band are supposed to be using a near-future technology sort of like the headsets in the 2013 film ‘Her’ that allows us all to sync up and perform the song virtually.”

A revolving collective, Gramercy Arms is inspired by the artistic heyday of ‘70-80s New York. Their addictive indie pop features exquisite hook-laden melodies that are lyrically driven and rich on vocal-harmony, interspersed with elements of 60s sunshine pop and folk-rock. 'Deleted Scenes' follows 'The Seasons of Love' (2012) and 'Gramercy Arms' (2008).

Produced, recorded and mixed by Ray Ketchem (Guided By Voices, Luna, Elk City) at Magic Door Recording in Montclair, NJ, this album was mastered by award-winning engineer Greg Calbi (John Lennon, David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen, Talking Heads, Patti Smith, Tom Petty, Todd Rundgren).

Earlier, Gramercy Arms teased the singles 'Yesterday's Girl' (plus an acoustic version), co-penned with music legend Lloyd Cole and performed as a duet with Derby and Renée Lo Bue (Elk City, Flowers of America), and 'Tricky Love Stuff', featuring violinist Claudia Chopek (Bright Eyes, The Little River Band), saxophonist Peter Hess (Phillip Glass Ensemble, Anti-Social Music, Slavic Soul Party).

'Deleted Scenes' is out now across online platforms, including Apple MusicSpotify and other online stores, as well as Bandcamp.

"Every step of this record has been about collaboration. Before we started, Ray Ketchem and I documented our vision for how the record should be. We wanted it to be simple, melodic, powerful and beautifully recorded. We were almost finished with the record and then COVID happened and we had to cancel what were initially intended to be the final sessions of making the album," says Dave Derby.

"During the pandemic, when the entire world seemed to go on break, we reached out to friends like Mike Errico, John Leon (Royal Arctic Institute, Roky Erickson), Stephen Hurley (Gigolo Aunts) and Mark Lizotte (Diesel), who were able to contribute remotely. Their contributions really transformed the record."

Ray Ketchem adds, "We were lucky to work with Greg Calbi, legendary Grammy-winning mastering engineer of classic records from Talking Heads, David Bowie and Bruce Springsteen. Calbi called me after spending the afternoon working on 'Deleted Scenes' and said, “Who IS this guy? Every one of these songs are fantastic!”

Lyrically driven and rich on vocal-harmony, interspersed with elements of 60s sunshine pop and folk-rock, 'Deleted Scenes' follows previous albums 'The Seasons of Love' (2012) and 'Gramercy Arms' (2008).

'Deleted Scenes' is out now across online platforms, including Apple MusicSpotify and other online stores, as well as Bandcamp. On March 1, Gramercy Arms hosts their record release show at Sid Gold's in New York, the first in a series of monthly Public Access TV Musical Variety Shows hosted and produced by Gramercy Arms, Jessie Kilguss, Gary Burton, Richard Alwyn Fisher and Dave Derby.

To kick off the brand new year, NYC indie rock outfit Gramercy Arms is releasing an acoustic performance of their Americana-tinged single 'Yesterday’s Girl', recorded live at the Magic Door Recording Studio in Montclair, NJ.

'Yesterday's Girl', a bittersweet remembrance of love lost and friendship regained, is the first single from their 'Deleted Scene' album, scheduled for release via the Magic Door Record Label in spring of 2023. The colorful video for the album version was directed by acclaimed visual artist Debora Francis.

Co-written by Gramercy Arms frontman Dave Derby and music legend Lloyd Coleand originally penned for Darlene Love’s solo album 'Introducing Darlene Love', the song was artfully reimagined by Derby and producer Ray Ketchem as a duet with Derby and Renée Lo Bue (Elk City, Flowers of America).

Gramercy Arms is a revolving New York-based collective of musicians and artists, masterminded by Dave Derby (The Dambuilders, Lloyd Cole). Inspired by the artistic heyday of ‘70s and ‘80s-era New York City, Gramercy Arms makes addictive indie pop - exquisite hook-laden melodies filled with lyrics that will have you floating back in time, remembering your favorite mistake.

Produced, recorded and mixed by Ray Ketchem (Guided By Voices, Luna, Elk City) at Magic Door Recording with additional recording by Lloyd Cole, this album was mastered by award-winning engineer Greg Calbi (John Lennon, David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen, Talking Heads, Patti Smith, Tom Petty, Bill Frisell, Todd Rundgren).

“As I recall, we wrote very quickly hoping to channel Springsteen channeling Spector, with copious help from Blanton’s of Kentucky,” says Lloyd Cole.  “I’d completely forgotten it until Dave presented this version and it feels like I won the lottery. It is wonderful. Very happy to have my name in the credits."

Renée Lo Bue discusses recording the song: “Being asked to sing 1/2 of the lead part on "Yesterday's Girl" was a wonderful surprise. I showed up at Magic Door Recording prepared to do backing vocals. It was Ray Ketchem who suggested a duet during the session. It's an honor to sing the female lead part on a Lloyd Cole/Dave Derby penned song originally written for Darlene Love …”

Lyrically driven and rich on vocal-harmony, interspersed with elements of 60s sunshine pop and folk-rock, 'Deleted Scene' is the group’s third full-length album, following 'The Seasons of Love' (2012) and 'Gramercy Arms'. This star-studded affair involves members of Guided by Voices, Phillip Glass Ensemble, The Dambuilders, Nada Surf, Luna, Elk City, Aeon Station, The Little River Band, Lloyd Cole and the Negatives, Elk City and Joan As Police Woman, among others.

'Yesterday's Girl' is out now, available across online platforms, including Apple Music and Spotify, as well as Bandcamp, where the album can be pre-ordered.

NYC collective Gramercy Arms present 'Yesterday's Girl', co-written by Lloyd Cole and Dave Derby

"Gentle and perfectly arranged, it is both calming and genuine, straightforward and talented, giving space and voice everywhere that the song and its story requires... clearly at a different level of musical maturity.. A hidden Americana-indiepop gem, Gramercy Arms show that music truly is a journey" ~ The Spill Magazine

NYC-based indie rock / powerpop outfit Gramercy Arms presents their Americana-tinged single 'Yesterday's Girl', a bittersweet remembrance of love lost and friendship regained. This is the first taste of their 'Deleted Scene' album, scheduled for release via Montclair, NJ-based Magic Door Record Label in early 2023,

Co-written by Gramercy Arms frontman Dave Derby and music legend Lloyd Cole, this song was originally penned for Darlene Love’s solo album 'Introducing Darlene Love'. Artfully reimagined by Derby and producer Ray Ketchem as a duet with Derby and Renée Lo Bue (Elk City, Flowers of America) trading vocals for the Gramercy Arms version. The colorful video, directed by acclaimed visual artist Debora Francis, features Derby and Lo Bue.
