Matt Wilier new album - 'Variations'

Matt Wilier began improvising on piano at the age of 5, with no knowledge of music other than his own feelings and sensations. After practicing for a few years, it was at the music conservatory that he discovered technique and then classical music.

From the age of 12, he would fall asleep listening to Keith Jarrett’s solo piano albums, including ‘The Köln Concert’ and ‘La Scala’. During the same period, after having studied the Romantics (and Chopin’s rubato), he was captivated by impressionist music and became fascinated by the French movement ‘Les Six’. But ultimately, he considers ‘Gaspard de la Nuit’ by Maurice Ravel to be one of the most beautiful piano works.

While retaining his initial desire for improvisation, he threw himself into minimalist and repetitive music, freeing himself from judgement and taking an interest in sonic resonances, frequencies and vibrations of the piano as proof of the passage of time.

In 2019, he released his first EP ‘Jours’, a collection of older improvised recordings, and chose to regularly release tracks resulting from his process of creation with the French label, Bruit Blanc.

‘Variations’, his new 11-track album, will be released on 28th June 2024. The recording of this album was no exception, with Matt once again focusing on resonances. ‘Variations’ is built in the same way, with changing melodies, harmonies and rhythms.

However, this time the piano is not alone, with strings, strings layers, ensemble, and analog bass frequencies as accompaniment.

This album is built like an original movie soundtrack. Images flash by as you close your eyes and listen to it.

Matt is already working on a new solo piano double album, with another version which is its cello and piano reflection… but that’s another story for another time.

A ROSE ON THE ROAD (At the traffic lights) JULES MAXWELL (featuring Polly Scattergood)

Archangelo Recordings is proud to announce the release of A Rose On The Road (At The Traffic Lights) by Jules Maxwell and Polly Scattergood on Friday 30th June 2023.

A Rose On The Road first appeared as an instrumental on Jules Maxwell's exquisite 2022 album Cycles. The title however had originated from a suggestion made by Polly Scattergood and, after the Cycles release, she and Jules continued to develop this darkly cinematic vocal version. Featuring Scattergood's quietly seductive words and Maxwell's delicate orchestration, the song paints a picture of a city, late at night and dark events unfolding, unnoticed, in plain sight.

The track is also available in a remixed version by Glowlines.

Jules Maxwell is a multi-instrumentalist composer and songwriter.

He plays keyboards for Australian band Dead Can Dance and in May 2021 released a critically acclaimed album with Lisa Gerrard, entitled Burn.

In 2021 he also released Nocturnes on Archangelo Recordings - a beautifully melancholic collection of instrumental pieces, much of it written in collaboration with the UK dance company Vincent Dance Theatre.

This was followed in 2022 by a second volume of instrumentals entitled Cycles.

He composed 4 songs for Le Mystére des Voix Bulgares 2018 album Boocheemish and the song First of July which appeared on Foy Vance’s debut album Hope.

Jules has also collaborated with Duke Special on numerous recordings, shows and projects including the 2009 National Theatre production of Mother Courage directed by Deborah Warner.

His work at Shakespeare’s Globe, includes the 2016 production of The Merchant of Venice starring Jonathan Pryce and the 2017 production of Boudica starring Gina McKee.

He has created modern dance soundtracks for Wayne McGregor, Cathy Marston, Vincent Dance Theatre, Bern Ballet, Skanes Dansteater Malmö, Jasmin Vardimon and Candoco Dance Company and in 2019 his debut full length opera The Lost Thing was presented by the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

2023 marks the release of One Night in Porto, a live recording of his Burn show with Lisa Gerrard.

Jules Maxwell is originally from Ireland but currently lives in London with his wife and young son.

Polly Scattergood is a British-based indie electronic artist who enjoys experimenting with sound and lyrics. Polly studied at The Brit School before signing with Daniel Miller - Mute/EMI.

Polly has released four studio albums, three under her own name and one as a side project called onDeadWaves with Mercury-nominated MAPS.

Polly set up her own label and studio, "Future Paradise," based on the Kent Coast and released her last album and EP through FP.

Polly's latest full-length album entitled "In This Moment," charted at number 23 on the Official UK Independent Album Charts.

Polly also hosts a podcast alongside Katie Melua called "The Detail" about the art of songwriting and making records.

Polly is currently in the process of writing her fifth studio album.

'OUTBOUND' by NAEON TEARDROPS

N∆EON TE∆RDROPS is a new artist alias from Norwegian techno and electronica veteran Per Martinsen, mostly known under his guise MENTAL OVERDRIVE.

Stepping out of his familiar instrumental electronic productions and into vocal-based songwriting, N∆EON TE∆RDROPS explore influences of the synthpop and darkwave of his formative years, while aiming to put these influences into a more contemporary context.

The music of N∆EON TE∆RDROPS was born out of his writing project PYRAMIDS ON THE MOON – a fictional autobiography in three parts where he explores three alternative timelines of his own life, and where each of his three imagined personalities create music under different artist aliases.

N∆EON TE∆RDROPS released the single AMNESIACSin 2021, reaching no 8 in the Deutsche Alternative Charts, followed by SHADOWSISTER in 2022, which reached no 12 in the same chart.

The latest single, WATERS RISING, released in March 2023, is currently at no 7 in the DAC, and at no 22 in the Indie Disko Top 40.

The new single OUTBOUND will be released on April 28th 2023, and the new song takes on a more optimistic mood, though still rooted in the noveau synthpop sound of previous NT output, and prompts you to “leave it all behind, and start another life”.

OUTBOUND will also be released in two remix versions on May 12th. One of the mixes is done by fellow Norwegian dance music maestro LINDSTRØM, and the other from Tromsø’s own KOHIB.

A full album entitled TESTIMONY is in its final completion, and will be released later this year, and N∆EON TE∆RDROPS is now also open for live bookings through Standing Ovation Agency.

EMILY DICKINSON

In March 2022 I was introduced to a local piano restorer and after talking to him about his work decided to have my Steinway restored. I’ve owned it for more than 20 years and it’s always been in need of some love and attention. Bill came to my house and we started chatting about pianos and keyboards and he asked me if I’d heard of the Una Corda. He said he was considering making one and asked if I would be interested in trying it out.

I immediately fell in love with the instrument, something about its percussive yet fragile sound just made me play it in a certain way, I instantly started playing arpeggios and repetitive themes… I ended up with 7 songs and a title, ‘7 Different Words For Love’.

Around the same time my friend Orian Williams was working on a movie in Georgia with Darren Le Gallo. I always share my work with Orian so I sent him my favourite from this new collection, ‘Two’. He played it to Darren and they asked me to score the movie they were working on, ‘Sam & Kate’.

Originally I thought it would just be a case of placing the 7 songs or edits in the places in the film where they wanted score but I was wrong and ended up writing about 50 new pieces using the same palette of piano, Una Corda, harmonium and cello. It was at times a super-frustrating experience and I came close to walking away several times. However, I persevered and my relationship with Darren blossomed both musically and personally. Finally he came to my studio with Orian and we finished the score in a couple of days (an “overnight success” that took 5 months).

At the end of this I still had the seven songs plus one other, ‘One Last Word’, which seriously Darren pulled out of me, and I have decided to release this collection as an album.

It’s only going to be digital for now with a single piece of art made by my friend from art school Ian Wright. We are going to make this available as a signed (him and me) limited edition art print in December. The album was mixed by Paul ‘Corky’ Corkett, a long time friend and incredible mix engineer. Playing cello is another friend Miriam Wakeling whose delicate interpretation of my writing is just about perfect.

The movie ‘Sam & Kate’, with my original score, is on general release from 11th November and VOD 18th November

The ‘7 Different Words For Love’ album will be available on all streaming platforms from 11th November

isa Gerrard and Jules Maxwell release the Deluxe Edition of their critically-acclaimed ‘Burn’ album on 18th November 2022 on Atlantic Curve.

Dead Can Dance singer Lisa Gerrard and Irish composer Jules Maxwell release an extended Deluxe edition of their critically acclaimed 2021 album, ‘BURN’

“Burn is as essential as anything else in Gerrard’s unique songbook”

“Burn sounds like an enigmatic requiem; music for your own act of remembrance”

“Burn is the world music equivalent of seeing life in bright colour for the first time”higherplainmusic.com

“It is with great pleasure that I share this expanded edition of the BURN album. Jules Maxwell and I began our creative collaboration with Dead Can Dance, and immediately realised that we had a shared connection through improvisation.
This new edition includes Jules’ original demos and coincides with our first live concerts of the BURN album in Portugal this coming November”

The record’s beginnings go all the way back to 2012 when Jules Maxwell was brought in by Dead Can Dance as a keyboard player on their Anastasis World Tour. He and the band’s singer Lisa Gerrard created a new piece called Rising Of The Moon’, which was performed as the gripping final encore of each show. By the time the tour finished in Santiago, Chile in 2013 a strong affinity had begun to develop between the two of them and further opportunities to collaborate with each other resulted over subsequent years.

In 2015, when Maxwell was asked to submit songs for the Bulgarian choir Le Mystère des Voix Bulgaresalbum Boocheemish, he approached Gerrard once again to co-write material for the new release. Having

travelled to Australia to work in her home studio, the pair came away with four new songs for that release, as well as the building blocks for this new venture together.

With James Chapman (aka MAPS) joining the duo as producer, ideas began to be generated freely and over time a distinct sound for their work began to emerge.

Speaking about the creative flow between the three musicians, Jules said, “I’ve never worked on anything which was so frictionless creatively as this. Very little was ever said. Communication happened only through the music. We accepted without question what each other offered to the feast. There was an enormous generosity on all sides. I sometimes think we talk too much anyway when creating music, when there is no need really. The music says it all”

With Lisa remaining in Australia, Jules adding keyboards and percussion from his studio in Northern France, and James bringing new light to the sound from England, the three were literally worlds apart but somehow these worlds became fused in the music.

James Chapman recalls “I felt a real sense of freedom and enjoyment while working with Jules and Lisa, and that feeling comes across in the sound of the songs. An otherworldly, expansive sense of wonder where anything is possible."

Jules added, “Sifting through Lisa’s vocal performances felt like panning for gold. That was the starting point for sure. There were some big nuggets in there but also loads of little sparkles and very quickly the music we were creating became curiously dramatic. Cinematic. It also seemed to transcend eras. To me it feels a bit like early Vangelis but it also has a distinct Celtic influence somewhere below the surface. The music is not afraid to be courageous. There are many audacious elements and moments within each piece”

The ‘Burn’ Deluxe Edition consists of the seven original tracks from the album, plus Jules Maxwell’s original 2015 demos.

Jules Maxwell reflects, “It took BURN nearly six years to be finally released, and over time I pretty much forgot about my original demos from 2015. I just rejoiced in the fact that JAMES CHAPMAN had utterly transformed the songs with his sonic and arrangement choices. But when I heard the demos again I realised that what he has done brilliantly is take our ideas and remix them in glorious widescreen whilst maintaining the energy of the original ideas in the final versions. I think, as a collection, this new expanded edition gives listeners a fascinating insight into our creative process.
