BLACK ORCHID EMPIRE have had quite the year. The prog-metal band released their first album for Season of Mist back in the spring to critical acclaim. With 'Tempus Veritas', Distorted Sound declared that BOE "set the new standard for prog rock".

After blowing away audiences at Radar, Tech-Fest and other summer festivals with equal parts melodic power and ferocious beauty,
BLACK ORCHID EMPIRE just took a much-deserved victory lap on their UK fall tour.
But they've already got plans to keep rolling well into next year.

Today, the British rockers are announcing their first tour of 2024. They'll be playing shows all across the UK next March.

“Tempus Veritas” is a collection of stories that seeks to find compelling imaginary narratives hidden away in what we all think of as history. Behind every milestone or major event in humanity’s long, complex past lies a treasure trove of possibilities for invention - how did Pope Urban VIII feel when confronted by his friend Galileo about the true nature of the sun? What really happened during an almost triumphant but ultimately doomed Everest attempt? What was it like to be a Norse settler amongst the Saxons; did the omens of the ancient gods begin to disappear?

In approaching “Tempus Veritas”, BLACK ORCHID EMPIRE sought collectively to push themselves both musically and thematically. Their pursuit of heaviness, melody, emotional power and rhythmic complexity has pushed them to create something they‘re immensely proud of. “Semaphore” was an album of Sci-Fi, this is an album of Hi-Fi. Drummer Billy Freedom of progressive rock trio BLACK ORCHID EMPIRE is now sharing a brand new drum play-through for "The Raven!" The song is taken from the band's new album, 'Tempus Veritas,' which is out now via Season of Mist! The clip can be seen below.

The band comments, "'The Raven' is one of our favourite songs from 'Tempus Veritas.' It has such a satisfying blend of progressive technical styles with huge melodies, and it’s super fun to play. Billy came up with some incredible parts for this song, including some beautifully detailed ride work that really speaks to his jazz and soul inspirations as well as those from heavy music. "Lyrically this song is written from the point of view of the first human in space - Yuri Gagarin. In his final moments aboard the test flight on which he would ultimately lose his life, he contemplates the stars above him - realizing he will never reach them again."

Speaking about the single, vocalist/guitarist Paul Visser says: "'The Raven' is a song inspired by our love of Viking folklore and mythology. After the Danish Vikings began raiding England in the 9th century, many sought long-term settlement - they were farmers who saw an abundance of rich, fertile land in the hands of the Saxons. 'The Raven' is written from the point of view of such a settler who, after many years in a foreign land, is struggling with the feeling of losing touch with the old gods of his former home. The insane video created by our friend and visual collaborator Alina Gordienco is a brilliant modern-day take on the idea of losing your identity and fighting your inner demons."

BLACK ORCHID EMPIRE comment on the song: "We’re super proud of this song - it’s one of the biggest choruses on 'Tempus Veritas.' The middle section also has some of our favourite vocal harmonic moments, with a crazy riff hitting straight after. The lyrical narrative explores the relationship between an early Meso-American emperor Montezuma and the explorer and conquistador Hernán Cortés. The story, told from the point of view of Montezuma, imagines that the new arrival was initially seen as a god - assumed to be the deity Quetzalcoatl. When Cortes cuts himself and is seen bleeding, the mirage is shattered and the Aztec ruler goes to war with the people he now realises are merely men."

Progressive rock trio BLACK ORCHID EMPIRE will be releasing a brand new full-length, 'Tempus Veritas,' on April 14, 2023! The cover artwork, traklist, and details can be found below! In conjunction with this announcement, the band is now sharing the energetic first single, "Deny the Sun." The song can be found along with an official music video, which was created by Alina Gordienco.

"'Deny The Sun' is the first song we wrote for 'Tempus Veritas' and we love how hard the riff goes!" exclaims vocalist/guitarist Paul Visser about the new single. "We’ve been pushing more and more into the technical side of our music for this album and this track is a great example of that. Lyrically, it deals with Galileo’s ideas about the central nature of the sun and the clash with religious views at the time, written from the point of view of his friend Pope Urban VIII who found himself in an impossible position and ended up condemning the astronomer. Our friend and long-time collaborator Alina Gordienco made the amazing video in LA, starring the wonderful Irina Dudyk as the sun goddess. Her work is consistently inspired and we love what she did for this song!"

Regarding the album, the Black Orchid Empire explains: "Interwoven with the fabric of our history as a species are countless opportunities for stories. Little pieces of imagined narrative, set within events we all collectively know as historical, that seek to explore what it means to be human - this is the idea behind 'Tempus Veritas'. Whereas Semaphore looked to the future, this record reinvents the past, wondering what it was like to be inside the mind of a person living through times of consequence. Musically, we continue to seek the boundary between the savagely technical and the undeniably beautiful and attempt to push it as far as possible. “This song tells the story of an alien sent to a doomed earth to try and 'correct' the mistakes humans have made. Finding not only hubris and greed but also beauty and wonder, the alien falls in love with the planet and its flawed people, and decides to go down with the ship.

We love playing this track – it's surprisingly challenging with the various time signature changes and rhythmic complexities as well as a technically-demanding vocal melody, but so satisfying and fun.

Alina Gordienco and her team made a narrative-driven video for the song which we literally cannot believe. What they've achieved is completely insane – our very own alien. It's like watching a big-budget movie. Check it out!”

“This is one of the heavier songs from Semaphore, and features a riff we've been tinkering with since touring Yugen. We're experimenting on this record with pushing our boundaries both in terms of melody and technicality, and Death From Above is an example of one of the more progressive metal-influenced songs on the album.

Lyrically it's inspired by the amazing work of Richard Morgan and his Takeshi Kovacs series, he's one of my favourite SF writers. The song is about the winged, raptor-like Martians that feature in his books (and more recently Altered Carbon on Netflix), and the technology they left behind. I especially love the middle section, it's so much fun to sing over that dreamy, ambient landscape. Then Dave and Billy lock in with their syncopated rhythm and it's an awesome moment. We can't wait to see the crowd reaction when we play this one live.”
