Deadlands Share Video for The Pretty Wild Collab Track "Kundalini"

New York-based band DEADLANDS, who joined the Spinefarm roster in 2024, are kicking off 2025 with a vicious new track. Today, the band has shared the video for new single "KUNDALINI," which is a complete collaboration with The Pretty Wild.

Watch it below.

"When we started writing 'Kundalini,' everything just felt so natural. CJ [Arey] and I walked into the studio and instantly clicked with The Pretty Wild girls (Jyl and Jules), and of course, Andrew the producer. From the very start, there was an incredible synergy, and we got right down to business. In just two days, we had created something truly special. The experience was infused with divine, feminine energy, and it was nothing short of inspiring," says Deadlands singer Kasey Karlsen.

She continues, "I'm beyond thankful to have worked alongside such brilliant and badass women. Jyl and Jules brought their unique artistry and creativity to the table, elevating the song to a whole new level. CJ and I were also blown away by Andrew's immense talent — his contribution was extraordinary, and we'd love to collaborate with him again in the future."

Karlsen finishes, "'Kundalini' is Deadlands' first-ever collaboration, and it's an honor to have teamed up with The Pretty Wild."

Jules from The Pretty Wild also offers a look into the song, saying, "'Kundalini' represents the primal, divine energy waiting to awaken, and that untamed force became the heartbeat of this song, a surge of calling out toxic femininity, empowerment, and transformation. We loved channeling that metal-physical edge, stitching together the spiritual and the brutal. Collaborating with Deadlands was an unforgettable journey, and we all poured everything into this beast, we can't wait to unleash it live."

"Kundalini" follows the Fall 2024 release of the video for "VILLAIN." Watch it here.

DEADLANDS are a New York-based band infusing fresh and unexpected energy into traditional post-hardcore. Founding member and frontwoman Kasey Karlsen is used to laying her cards face up on the table, as she has been writing about her toxic relationships, friendships, hardships, and current events  basically all topics that are near and dear to her heart — since she was in high school. She also draws over million followers across platforms, thanks to her compelling content. CJ Arey, professionally known as "NO SHADE," creates melodies for the guitar and bass while simultaneously inputting his own flare of trap and cinematic references into the production of the music. In 2024, the band headlined shows across the United States while making stops to perform at Louder Than Life, Aftershock, and Blue Ridge Festivals. Deadlands are working on more music for 2025, with tour plans on the horizon. Fans of bands like Asking Alexandria, Motionless In White, Escape the Fate, Falling in Reverse, Wage War, and Bring Me The Horizon will be magnetically drawn to DEADLANDS.

Ithaca, NY-based artist Rose Alaimo releases high energy 'Power Lines' single on the power of human connection 'A Place To Go When You Need To Hide' album is out now

Alaimo sweeps through indiepop dreamery to sophisticated balladry to pulsating and superb rock, in her own sonic diary of life over the past few years. Stunning, sobering and inspiring" ~ The Spill Magazine

"Sonic highs and lulling lows, fierceness and serenity, self-doubt and enlightenment, challenging questions and unexpected answers... lush folk and considered Americana are punctuated with more driven rock urges, where the immediacy of pop music is subsumed under ambient dreamscapes" ~ Big Takeover Magazine

American indie pop-rock artist
Rose Alaimo presents 'Power Lines', a song about how we as humans are all inter-connected to one other like never before. This is the second single from her new album 'A Place To Go When You Need To Hide', following the more grounding lead track 'Stars', which is about finding an unexpected moment of stillness in the midst of a crazy world.

This is the third full-length album from the Ithaca, NY-based artist. Honest, hopeful and emotive, Alaimo takes on her internal struggles as she finds her way through darkness to exercise her own will-power, freedom of choice and self-empowerment.

A veterinarian and vegetable farmer in her day-to-day life, this record exposes a whole other side of Alaimo as she finds her way through darkness to exercise her own will-power, freedom of choice and self-empowerment.

"The song ‘Power Lines’ is about the connections that exist between us, whether we are aware of them or not. One thing that was highlighted during Covid was how unbelievably interconnected we are. How fast the virus spread across the world was astounding, and in the middle of everyone debating mask and vaccination mandates and people becoming increasingly stressed and angry and there being more and more division between everyone, a tree was blown over on my property, taking the power lines down in front of my house. I walked outside and, after the shock of seeing this healthy tree ripped up by the roots by a strong wind, I noticed the lines that were down,” says Rose Alaimo.

“I saw how they were connected to my house, and how the main lines also connected to my neighbor's house, and how those same lines connected every single house on the street. I never stopped to notice how physically connected all of these houses were by these power lines and how what happened to my house affected everyone else around me. It struck me as an interesting analogy to how we as humans are also all more connected to each other and to the world around us than we might initially assume. These connections may not be visible but they are definitely there. We can spread viruses to each other and we can spread anger and fear, but if we are mindful of this interconnectedness, we can also choose to spread GOOD things: kindness and understanding and peace.”

Rose Alaimo writes, sings, performs, programs, records and co-produces her own music. Additional production and mastering was provided by Jamie Hill (Nada Surf, Zola Jesus, House of Pain), at Department of Energy Management in Tacoma, WA.  She released her more acoustic debut album 'The Importance of Centers' in 2019, followed by the gritty and anthemic 'Grow' in 2021.

The emotional range of this album mirrors the intense highs and lows of life, from soft and dreamy lullabies, where we remember loved-ones who are no longer with us (
'Stars'), to anthemic, thrashy songs protesting Russia's war on Ukraine and unethical and dangerous world leaders ('Resist The Force'). On 'The Devil That You Know', she explores the challenge of letting go of familiar toxic patterns due to the fear of making changes in a world that feels increasingly unstable  wrapping up with 'Here I Am', a grounding and hopeful reprise medley reminding us of the stillness and peace that we can find, even in times of trouble.

'A Place To Go When You Need To Hide' is out now and available via fine music platforms, including
Bandcamp, Spotify and Apple Music.

LIPS TURN BLUE, formerly DDrive, Sign Worldwide Record Deal with MIG RECORDS

LIPS TURN BLUE, formerly DDrive, Sign Worldwide Record Deal with MIG RECORDS.

New York rockers turn tragedy into triumph;
after the passing of legendary lead vocalist Phil Naro, band releases brilliant debut album and adds new singer/ musician, Iggy Marino.

LIPS TURN BLUE, formerly known in the Upstate New York region as the popular club act, DDRIVE, has regrouped and returned with a new name, a brilliant debut album, a world-wide record contract, and a new member in singer/musician Iggy Marino. The band (nicknamed LTB) which also includes guitarist Don Mancuso, keyboardist Eric Bieber, bassist Mike Mullane, and drummer Roy Stein are currently preparing for the release of its new album and some select concert dates.

Pre-orders / pre saves available here: https://lipsturnblue.lnk.to/justpush

The group’s first single, "Just Push" will be released March 23rd. That will be followed by other singles: “Pray For Tomorrow,” an ode to the turbulent times much of the world is experiencing; "Blood Moon," and "Crazy In Love." The debut album, LIPS TURN BLUE will have its worldwide release this coming May 4th., to coincide with the one year anniversary of the week he passed away.

When the band’s lead vocalist and co-songwriter Phil Naro sadly passed away after a valiant battle against cancer the group’s future was in doubt. Naro and the other band members had just secured a worldwide record deal with the European-based label, MIG RECORDS, and had put the finishing touches on the album when his illness returned, and tragedy struck.

As his illness progressed the band members assured Naro the record would be released, and they would continue to pursue his artistic vision for the material he felt was his best work as a songwriter and vocalist. Now, with the record deal signed, a release date set and a dynamic new vocalist in place, their promise to their fallen musical comrade can finally be fulfilled.

Iggy Marino came to the band after an extensive search for a new vocalist. He is a recent Nazareth College graduate whose instructors at the school included LTB drummer Roy Stein and its manager, Bruce Pilato, who both teach music-industry courses there.

“We feel we have a great singer and fellow musician in place that the music touches and motivates,” says Don Mancuso. “We want to get this amazing music out there. It needs to be played to as many music fans as possible. After our period of mourning Phil’s loss, we now have the drive and experience to take this music on the road and finish our next album, which is already well in the works.”

Adds Eric Bieber, who, in addition to his skill has a classically trained keyboardist and longtime professional performing musician, recently retired as a physician and hospital executive administrator. “Phil was passionate in his desire to have this music heard and performed. We are honored to be able to carry on his legacy by doing just that. Iggy Marino is a remarkable young musician who will take the band in yet another direction with some of the new material. He is also a fan of the existing album and will be faithful to Phil’s vision.”

Lou Gramm, founding member and former lead vocalist of FOREIGNER, appears on the album's final track, "A Little Outside."

“We believe this is one of the strongest debut albums we have heard in many years,” says Bernd Ramien, A&R & Director of Catalog Marketing for MIG (Made-In Germany-Music GmbH), which signed the band soon after only hearing a few tracks from the debut album. “We had thought and hoped Phil would overcome his illness, but when he sadly left us, we were determined to make sure this album and band could carry on.”

At the moment, MIG has plans to release three singles by the time the full album is available this coming April. The group is currently booking tour dates to coincide with the album’s release. Based in Hannover, Germany but distributed worldwide, MIG Music has released albums by an extraordinary roster of acts that includes: Joe Jackson, Sheila E, Jack Bruce of Cream, Roger McGuinn, Ron Wood, Muddy Waters, Pee Wee Ellis, Maceo Parker, Weather Report, Nash Albert, Pat Travers Band, Vanilla Fudge, Richard Thompson, George Thorogood, Public Image Ltd, and many others.

NYC's Loud Apartment teams up with icon Garrison Hawk on 'Rebellion'. Bill Laswell-produced 'New Future' LP is out Dec. 10

"A proper and much-welcome dose of sanguinity much needed... highly vibrant sonic excellence that expounds the human possibility for expansion and evolution" ~ Big Takeover Magazine

"Music with a conscience... Here amongst the loose funk grooves, jazz infused improvisations, the soul sass and the reggae rhythms there is a whole manifesto" ~ Second Scene Magazine

"Worthy of your time and thought-space... music that will have you grooving and missing NYC's bohemian fusion scene, even if you've never experienced it first hand" ~ The Noise Journal

"Flowing funk from the streets of New York City... There’s so much soul in there, do much flow, so much “now”, so much everything and all pin-point right, so full of beauty" ~ The Organ Magazine

"Groove-filled exploration of the power of music... perhaps the most democratic human-spirit loving song about technology" ~ Amplify Music Magazine

Ahead of releasing their 'New Future' album, NYC-based funk art collective Loud Apartment release their new single 'Rebellion' featuring alternative music-turned-dancehall icon Garrison Hawk, perhaps best known as a long-term collaborator of Tricky and Sly & Robbie, among other notable artists. In November, Loud Apartment released the lead track 'Technology'.

Their unique NYC fusion of funk, soul and rock with Latin, reggae, dub and hip hop influences is inspired by growing up on the old upper west side. Influenced by such artists as Parliament-Funkadelic, Miles Davis, Santana, Gil Scott Heron, Mongo Santamaria and Ray Barretto, their sound embodies the intersection of culture that is New York City, loose enough to give room for improvisation and extended grooves.

'New Future' is the band's third long-player, produced by legendary bassist / producer Bill Laswell at Orange Music in West Orange, New Jersey, following their aptly titled 'System Breakdown' LP, also produced by Laswell.

Created by musician and technologist Nevaris A.C. (voice, percussion, keyboards), the band's current lineup also includes Bill Laswell on bass, turntablist DJ Logic, multi-instrumentalist Peter Apfelbaum (flute/sax), guitarist Will Bernard and drummer Lockatron.

"The album looks to the future with hope but not in a naive way. There’s a lot of trouble in the world right now especially with regards to the environment and human rights. It’s an urgent plea for radical change and a different world. A new future," says Nevaris A.C.

'New Future' is an album that presents the sound of New York Fusion - a blend of sounds that have Funk as a core ingredient. Largely influenced by music from the '70s and early '80s, this is actually a modern sound that pays respect to the music of New York. For this release, Bill Laswell created three Dub mixes from the tracks, which were designed as the second side of the vinyl pressing. These mixes create a sonic landscape reflecting on the themes of 'Technology', 'Rebellion' and 'Rhythm and Rhyme'.

This new release follows the band's aptly titled 'System Breakdown' LP, also produced by Bill Laswell and created at Orange Music in West Orange, New Jersey.

The band debuted in 2012 with their 'Get Up Get Down' LP, mixed by Bill Laswell and featuring Bernie Worrell (P-Funk, Talking Heads), who also appeared with them for several live performances in NYC. In 2019, Nevaris approached Bill Laswell about working with him and drummer Lockatron. From the first time playing together in the studio the new project took off.

As of December 2, 'Technology' will be available via Bandcamp and is also being offered as an instant grat download upon ordering the full 'New Future' album. On December 10, this long-player will be released digitally across platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music.

EPIC TANTRUM ANNOUNCE THE FIRST ANNUAL EPIC FEST

mail-44.png

Fast-rising prog rockers Epic Tantrum is pleased to announce the first annual Epic Fest, a two day celebration of music and art – taking place on September 10 and 11, 2021 at Sharkey’s Event Center in Syracuse, New York. Visit epic-fest.com for more details, and visit showclix.com/event/epic-fest-syracuse to purchase tickets.

"It has always been our goal to play shows that are more than concerts, we want to create events, we want to see music and art showcased, and that is why Epic Fest was created,” said bassist Greg Ross, Epic Tantrum.

Epic Fest will feature national touring bands YYNOT, Ethan Brosh, PAKT, and Epic Tantrum as well as iconic photography from Mark Weiss and cover art of the legendary Ioannis from DangerousAge (both will be displaying their art both nights), while Bass Magazine is one of the evening’s sponsors. PAKT features Alex Skolnick of Testament and bassist Percy Jones best known for his work in jazz fusion group Brand X. YYNOT started as a RUSH tribute band featuring the incredible bass playing of Tim Starace. They have since added their own material and built up a large devoted following. Also appearing will be acclaimed guitar shredder Ethan Brosh, who Guitar World described as “The young guitarist combines a deep musical knowledge, the ability to seduce listeners with catchy melodies and a style that makes this up-and-coming talent shine.”

Ioannis has designed over 175 record covers, and singles, for such groups as Deep Purple, Allman Brothers, Blue Oyster Cult, Dream Theater, King Crimson, Bob Weir, Extreme, UFO, Saga, and many others.

Mark Weiss is an American rock music photographer. His most widely recognized photographs capture the look and aesthetic of music and celebrity personalities of the 1980s. His work with publications such as Circus magazine and FACES helped establish Mark "Weissguy" Weiss as a name known for rock photography. Weiss has travelled the world photographing legends from Van Halen, Ozzy Osbourne, Aerosmith, and Mötley Crüe to Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Bon Jovi, and KISS. Weiss’s iconic images capture the artists onstage, backstage, and behind the scenes.

"Our goal is to build this into a yearly event that showcases some of the great talent in this area as well as bringing in national touring bands," said Paul Ligner, guitarist, Epic Tantrum.

Epic Tantrum is comprised of members Peter - guitar, vox; Paul - guitar, vox; Greg - bass, vox; and Z - drums. The origins of the band started when Peter and Paul began recording instrumental classical guitar pieces. They enjoyed working together and decided to write and record original material in Paul's studio, known as The Strangers Room. Inspired by the creative process of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, the two wrote songs and tinkered with them until they were satisfied, at which point they brought in friends to round out their recording sessions. Paul's longtime friend Z joined the band as the drummer. They named this collaboration Epic Tantrum, and recorded a demo entitled "31st and Mary". Over the next few years, they continued to write and record material - but the goal of a full band remained elusive. In 2016, Greg joined the band as bassist and the hard work of finishing their debut album kicked into full gear. Epic Tantrum started playing live in 2017 and has already shared the stage with national recording artists such as King's X.

VALENCE Premiere “If You’re Not Into the Whole Brevity Thing"

New York instrumental prog-metal outfit VALENCE has partnered with the folks at Metal Injection to premiere their new music video. Fans can check out the video for their new single "If You're Not Into the Whole Brevity Thing" at the link found here. The new video is the first from the band since the release of their 2019 full-length 'Cognitive Dissidents', which PopMatters praised as "relentlessly intricate and unpredictable"

Speaking about the new, 'Big Lebowski' inspired video, Geoff Schaefer (guitar/keys) comments, “Obviously we’re all Big Lebowski devotees—I’m actually a Dudist priest—so it only felt right to make an homage to what’s clearly the greatest movie of all time.”

Chris Romano (drums) adds, “If anyone was wondering if we're into the whole brevity thing, the answer is no.”

About VALENCE

New York's VALENCE takes instrumental progressive metal to new heights through their eclectic compositions and energetic live show. The band joins disparate styles in a fusion of metal, jam, classical, jazz, and more. Heavy Blog is Heavy describes their music as "well made, passionate, and considerate instrumental progressive metal, very obviously indebted to the classics but also dedicated to sounding like its own thing." They won an Independent Music Award for "The Reckoning," off of their 2014 EP, Laser Baron, the follow up to their 2012 debut Sleepwalker.

Between the awards and rave reviews, the band has developed a reputation as a crushing force in the New York music scene and beyond. They’ve played music festivals including ProgDay and NXNE, official after-parties for Dream Theater and Clutch at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester, NY, as well as opening for acts such as Scale the Summit, Consider the Source, Black Crown Initiate, and Car Bomb.

The band released their latest full-length album, Cognitive Dissidents, on April 12, 2019. In its premiere of the second single, “Preferred Nomenclature,” Gear Gods wrote “there are no moments that make you wish this track had vocals, which says something about both the melodic content of the song and Valence’s ability to craft a well-thought-out and substantial piece of music.” PopMatters described the full album as “relentlessly intricate and unpredictable—yet remarkably unified and welcoming—a bit of wordless storytelling that will captivate fans of progressive rock.”

CRYPTODIRA ANNOUNCE A STORM CALLED PROGRESS LIVESTREAM HAPPENING MAY 11th & 12th

PERFORMING THEIR NEW ALBUM THE ANGEL OF HISTORY IN FULL

The New York-based progressive death metal group, Cryptodira, have announced their upcoming 2-day livestream event titled A Storm Called Progress, an in-studio, full performance of their newest album The Angel Of History. Captured at Graphic Nature Audio, the session was engineered by Matt Guglielmo, and mixed and mastered by Jamie King. Happening on May 11th and 12th at 7pm ET, the stream will be available to watch for free on the band's Twitch channel (twitch.tv/CryptodiraBand) while the band will be present to virtually chat with fans. Following the full album performance, fans can expect play-throughs, lyric analysis, and the individual song performances to be released every month.

Speaking on the event, vocalist/guitarist Scott Acquavella says:

"As a band that's always done things the old fashioned way of writing, recording, and touring, pandemic life has been a particularly weird adjustment for us. Having put out a record in the middle of it, we were hellbent on finding a way to bring people closer to The Angel of History than anything else we've done before, and the answer to that was A Storm Called Progress.

A Storm Called Progress is centered around a live, in-studio performance of The Angel of History recorded at Graphic Nature Audio and mixed/mastered by Jamie King that will be premiered as a two day live stream event on our Twitch Channel. From there, the following months will see a series of video releases, with each month being dedicated to a different song on the record. For each song there will be an instrumental play-through video, a deep dive lyrical analysis video, and a video cut of that individual song from the live performance to explore The Angel of History in a completely different context.

We weren't content to just put out any old video performance in a sea of COVID-inspired live streams and it was important to us to release a body of work that would be engaging for listeners and creatively challenging for us, pandemic or not."

Their sophomore full-length The Angel Of History, out now via Good Fight Music, marks their most dynamic and intricate efforts yet. Put best by BrooklynVegan, the band achieve a balance of, “mind-meltingly complex as it is headbangingly abrasive as it is genuinely tuneful.” Co-produced by Jamie King (Between the Buried and Me, The Contortionist, Vatican) and Cryptodira, The Angel Of History is available to buy and stream here.

Rochester, NY band OVTLIER released single "Who We Are" with guest appearance from producer/mixer/songwriter Ricky Armellino (Ice Nine Kills, HAWK) today via Zoid Entertainment/INgrooves today.

"Who We Are" can be Streamed/Downloaded at

https://ffm.to/whoweare

Ovtlier has grown into a roaring rock band of stadium ambitions. Led by the enigmatic frontman Joey ArenaOvlier has already captured the hearts of more than 60K daily followers online, more than 2.1 million views of fan-curated content on YouTube, over half a million streams Spotify, appearing in Revolver MagazineAlternative PressLoudwireABC News and has been selling out shows around the Northeast. Drawing influences from Breaking Benjamin, 30 Seconds To Mars, Korn, Periphery and others, Ovtlier brings the rock and metal edge to a new height of intensity.

“Who We Are” will hold a special place in the Ovtlier arsenal. A song that skims the surface of a personal hell; I have swept a lot of childhood trauma under the rug and just kept it moving throughout life. It feels damn near impossible to trust or let anyone in so I keep everyone at arms length. Something I am currently working on and because I am determined to re-wire some of my perception pertaining to that, I look forward to the day this song is only artifact to a past self. Everything we go through starting with day no. 1 is what shapes us into “who we are” says Joey Arena.

Joey adds, "Starting with “Spineless”, I fell in love with the idea of re releasing a track but with another musicians approach. Starting with Danny Leal Jr. (Upon A Burning Body) and now bringing on my dear friend, Ricky Armellino (Ice Nine Kills, HAWK). Ricky has such a unique swagger, tone and delivery when it comes to vocals. I’ve been a fan of his work since the “This Or The Apocalypse” days and as “Who We Are” was in its completed stage, Ricky was the first person to pop in my head and wonder how he would’ve gone about a verse and chorus and voila, there we have it! Without giving any detail away, I encourage you to give this track a listen. Who knows, you may find yourself enjoying it more! "

“Joey is a good buddy and the fact that JD produced this track also is a big plus for me. I’m honored I got to perform on it" says Ricky Armellino.

Inspired by everything 80’s to 90s grunge and NuMetal, Arena began playing guitar at the age of 11 on an old 3-string guitar. After achieving commercial success with his band, Young Bloods, Arenare-centered himself and began traveling 8 hours from Rochester to Cleveland in search of an identity. Playing sold-out hometown shows, touring the states and rapidly growing their fan-base among all types of music fans. Housing a hybrid sound that cross-pollinates into other sub-genres, giving a formula to freedom in songwriting and forever being able to validate surprise in their releases to come. Ovtlier is set out to deliver their most personal and intense work yet.

New York based Progressive Instrumental Space rock band PONTUS has released the official music video for the title single off of their album, Black Hole BBQ. The video for "Black Hole BBQ" was pieced together by different videos taken from the recording process and edited in with some live footage taken throughout the years. Included are short videos of the live studio tracking of drums, cello, and the percussion. The making of the album and the video was a collaboration with both Faculty and students at Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema in Brooklyn. Pontus’ day gig is at Feirstein graduate school where he manages the post production facility and teaches music technology. The musicians performing on Black Hole BBQ include Pontus H.W. Gunve (All guitars, composition, and production), Tripp Dudley(Drums, Tabla, and Percussion), Ian O’Brien (Modular Synth), Chris Kelly and Dan Kramer (Bass), Eric Allen (Cello), Katie Thode(Flute). The album was mixed by Rocky Gallo at Virtue and Vice Studios and mastered by Mike Kalajian at Rogue Planet Mastering.

"Have you – like me – missed Pontus H.W. Gunve’s magic of melting contradictory modes and impressions into rich melodic canvases? Go and grab a bunch (Not forgetting your friends) of it! ‘cause you are missing big time! " - Salim Ghazi Saeedi - Art Rockin' Magazine

"If you like your music laid back and intense at the same time, with an eastern vibe that won't quit, this is right up your alley ... In fact to me it's so awesome that I will be
not only recommending for years to come, I will be following this artist’s progress from here out.” - Larry Toering - Music Chronicles

“There are few musicians in the mold of Pontus Gunve. Rarely content to rely on the traditional, but instead plundering it for his own uses...” - Jason Hillenburg - Music Street Journal

People make music to get a reaction. Music is communication.” – Yoko Ono

If there is truth in that statement, then perhaps the true measure of a musician is the reaction and response his or her music gets. Pontus Gunve has garnered quite a few reviews over the years that can be an indication of that relationship. It’s a great place to start in understanding Pontus Gunve and his group PHWG.

Pete Feenstra at Get Ready to Rock said, “Pontus has a keen sense of the musical possibilities his impressionist style offers him.” Translated from Swedish, Jan-Erik Zandersson said this in Nya Upplaga, “Musically, this is a kind of progressive post-rock with a historical focus.” In a review of Gunve’s latest disc, Andrew Metzglerof Mountain Weekly News said, “The only way I can describe The Observer is by comparing it to Pink FloydBeats AntiqueUmphrey’s McGeeQueen, and The John Butler Trio (2006 period)…Take elements from all of those bands, combine them with a few classic instruments and you can have an inkling as to what Pontus HW Gunve is bringing to the table.”

So, where does Pontus Gunve come from? The simple answer is New York City. That’s only the geographical location for his current stop on the musical journey that is his life, though. Gunve grew up in Sweden and was first fully gripped by his passion for music there when he saw Jean Michel Jarre’s Rendezvous Houston: A City in Concert on television as a child. Blown away by Jarre’s all-encompassing high-tech stage show and the endless layers of his album Oxygene, he began to explore the capabilities of computers to create different sounds and textures. His fascination with rock music led him to electric guitar, which he began to study voraciously, simultaneously imagining ways to expand its boundaries. At the same time, he experimented with sequencing and learned how to build computer and synthesizer modules that could be used practically during performances and on recordings.
Pontus Gunve’s music embraces the theory that music is a multi-dimensional experience and an adventure in wordless storytelling that fully absorbs the audience’s mind, body and spirit. Flowing through time and space, the lush sonic textures he creates evoke the ethereal landscapes of other-worldly multi-media artists such as Jean Michel Jarre and Boards of Canada while still clearly inspired by the thick, dark compositional textures of legendary heavy metal bands like Megadeth. And his energy as a guitarist celebrates numerous influences, from the technical proficiency of Steve Vai and the raw, exotic approach of Marty Friedman, to the minimalistic moments created by legendary blues performers. Gunve’s finely-tuned skills in the studio as both a producer and engineer allow him to seamlessly unify many different musical styles and a wide range of instruments into intricately-crafted, mesmerizing recordings resonating with unexpected surprises.

Of course, again, looking to reviewers can give us more insight into that sound. AtMusic Street Journal, Jason Hillenburg said of Gunve’s latest disc, “There are few musicians in the mold of Pontus Gunve. Rarely content to rely on the traditional, but instead plundering it for his own uses, Gunve brings a European sensibility to dense, intensely musical instrumentals. His album, The Observer, ranks as one of the most challenging and, ultimately, rewarding releases of the year.” Scott Kahn had this to say of the single “Cavalry of Camels” at MusicPlayers.com: "World Music meets Prog Metal in the latest single from Pontus Gunve. This is big orchestral stuff that rocks thanks to the solid guitar and drums anchoring the complex rhythms. The percussion and string section really give the music its international, ethnic vibe... Melodic, rocking, beautifully produced... I'm not fully sure how we'd categorize it, but we definitely enjoy listening to it." At Mr. Music ChroniclesLarry Toering said, “There is just no describing the sheer quality on offer here. It's something one must hear for themselves to really dig into properly, so it comes highly recommended…If you like your music laid back and intense at the same time, with an eastern vibe that won't quit, this is right up your alley. In fact, to me it's so awesome that I will be not only recommending for years to come, I will be following this artist’s progress from here out.”

Ludwig Von Beethoven said, “Music is the mediator between the spiritual and the sensual life. “ Gunve translates his sensual impressions of the universe into intricate, personal and melodic musical passages that vividly illustrate his life’s rich and complex journey and allow him to connect powerfully with his own musicians, the audience and with each space he performs. He has composed music and worked as a sound designer for a wide range of independent films and Web projects as well as for various large-scale art projects in Sweden. He founded his own instrumental project, PHWG in 2007, a group that combines video, electronic instruments, cello, violin, drums and tabla/darbuka. With that group he has released Four full albums and ONE EP, Black Hole BBQ (2019), IV (EP – 2016), The Observer (2013), Movements (2008), and Great Wall of Sound (2006).

CLOUD CITY EP OUT NOW

New York City-based collective VRSTY (pronounced "Varsity") — Joey Varela [vocals], Javy Dorrejo [bass], Chris Cody [drums], and Paul Gregory [guitar] — released the Cloud City EP via Spinefarm Records on December 4.

The band has just dropped the video for the new track "Massive." Watch it HERE.

"The 'Massive' music video is perfect for what the song is actually trying to say," says Varela. "It's us in a dark room, performing, loving what we do, and having fun as it's always been. Just us."

Varela previously shared the song's inspiration, saying, "'Massive' is literally all of my frustrations coming to the surface. It's years of doing favors and helping other's elevate their careers — only to be told I'm just a copy of 'insert whatever vocalist here' or to be called a background player. Not this time. I remember writing 'Massive,' and the only thought in my head was, 'They don’t take you seriously — but they'll wish they did.'"

The song is currently the most played track at SiriusXM's Octane for the second week in a row.

VRSTY's music unexpectedly blends metallic grooves and R&B vocal swagger. The band has been grinding in the scene for over five years now, releasing the Lights EP in 2015 and heading on tour to earn their road stripes. They dropped Blck and Blck Deluxe in 2019, with "YOU & I" (over 412k Spotify streams), "Colorblind" (over 310k Spotify streams), and "Nola" (over 278k Spotify streams) quickly establishing themselves as indie fan favorites. The band has tallied over 2 million total streams and looks to open things up even more with the Cloud City EP, which serves as its Spinefarm Records debut.

CRYPTODIRA SHARES NEW SINGLE, “WHAT CAN’T BE TAKEN BACK”

SOPHOMORE ALBUM THE ANGEL OF HISTORY
OUT DECEMBER 4, 2020 VIA GOOD FIGHT MUSIC

The New York-based progressive death metal group, Cryptodira, shared their newest single titled "What Can’t Be Taken Back" from their forthcoming LP The Angel Of History, due out on December 4, 2020, via Good Fight Music. “What Can’t Be Taken Back”, the second single that follows up “A Tendency to Fall,” punches in with a hard-as-nails sonic assault, mid-tempo progressive riffing, and dueling vocals before giving way to the walls of melody that make up the second half of the track.

Speaking on the lyrical content of the single, drummer Matthew Taibi says:

"The most valuable resource anyone has at their disposal is time. What makes it so valuable is the fact that it can’t be reversed—time cannot be taken back. Barring the larger philosophical implications of time’s unreserved movement, suffice it to say that an hour of time should be worth far more than $15."

Guitarist and vocalist Scott Acquavella adds:

"Despite most of our songs having an ever changing series of moods, there is something about "What Can't Be Taken Back" that we feel represents our sonic and emotional spectrum particularly well. It is as furious as it is delicate and there is a common emotive thread running through each section that well-expresses the urgent and weighty nature of the lyrical content."

Right off the heels of their new EP Better Left Unsaid, the band is preparing their sophomore album, The Angel Of History, that acts as the follow up to their critically acclaimed 2017 debut, The Devil's Despair. Heavy Blog is Heavy stated that the LP is the band's "contribution to the ongoing answer for the progressive metal conundrum. It shows that there's still reason and life in the genre, that in its sometimes over the top and too self-serious highs and lows, there are still interesting ideas and powerful emotions to be manifested." Produced by Jamie King (Between the Buried and Me, The Contortionist, Vatican) and Cryptodira, The Angel Of History is available for pre-order here and the new single “What Can’t Be Taken Back” is available to stream here.

Dry Kill Logic release heavy new single “Don’t See Ghosts”

Dry Kill Logic's official visualizer for 'Don't See Ghosts', out now! Stream/Download: https://smarturl.it/dkl_dontseeghosts https://www.facebook.com/drykill...

Today, New York metal outfit Dry Kill Logic returned with the hard-hitting new single “Don’t See Ghosts”. Premiering on Revolver, the track stays true to the band’s masterful blend of nu-metal and metallic hardcore that has captivated fans over their 25-year career. “Don’t See Ghosts” flows through Cliff Rigano’s deep, soaring vocals cut between heavy breakdowns and top-shelf guitar shredding. Lyrically, the track is meant to conjure interpretations from each individual listener, creating a more personal attachment to the song. You can listen to "Don't See Ghosts" now on YouTube and find the track on Spotify and all streaming services tomorrow (9/18).

On the track, vocalist Cliff Rigano told Revolver:

“We’ve always tried to write songs that come from a personal place, but frame them in a way that can be interpreted to mean something different and unique to each listener. “Don’t See Ghosts” was recorded last year, right after we put out "Vices", but we were unsure of when to release it. After looking at the lyrics recently, the song actually started to mean something different to us as well, and we realized that this was the right time to put it out.”

The single was recorded at Intension Studios in Astoria, NY and Silver Bullet Studios in Burlington, CT. It was produced by the band’s guitarist, Jason Bozzi, and mixed by Greg Thomas (Misery Signals, Shai Hulud). “Brendan (Kane Duff, bassist) brought Greg into the mix when it came time to record the new songs, and being fans of his other work, we were stoked that he wanted to get involved,” Rigano stated.

“Don’t See Ghosts” serves as the follow up to Dry Kill Logic’s 2019 single “Vices”, which marked the highly-anticipated return to the studio for the band after a prolonged absence of new music dating back to their 2006 full-length, Of Vengeance and Violence. The band will continue to release singles through their own label, Psychodrama Music Group, in partnership with eOne Music.

Rochester, NY band OVTLIER has premiered their official music video for single "Buried Me Alive"

“Buried Me Alive” is a personal favorite and great representation of Ovtlier. I chose to re-record Buried in 2019 (release in 2020) because I knew there was a lot of life left and it deserved to be heard. It was written by myself and Evan McKeever and produced by Justin “JD” de Blieck of Ice Nine Kills. It was a great experience to revisit a song from years ago only to see how much you grow as a musician and vocalist. It’s a test to oneself. Lyrically, the song is about my love for music but hate for the industry. It can almost take the love out of the art if you let it, chew you up and spit you out. Like life, we must roll with the punches and continue on" says Arena.

Their latest release, What Doesn’t Kill You takes the listener on a roller-coaster jaunt. Drawing influences from Breaking Benjamin, 30 Seconds To Mars, Korn, Periphery and others, Ovtlier brings the rock and metal edge to a new height of intensity.

Inspired by everything 80’s to 90s grunge and NuMetal, Arena began playing guitar at the age of 11 on an old 3-string guitar. After achieving commercial success with his band, Young Bloods, Arena re-centered himself and began traveling 8 hours from Rochester to Cleveland in search of an identity and definition for what would become Ovtlier’s debut EP, What Doesn’t Kill You.
