Hence unveils haunting new single ‘Steadying The Ship’ – A sonic meditation on the Long Lost Pleasers

In a world rocked by turbulence, where some shake the foundations while others quietly stabilise, Hence returns with their latest single, ‘Steadying The Ship – Long Lost Edit’ - a hypnotic, poetic dive into the paradox of those who hold things together at their own expense.

Set against an atmospheric, undulating soundscape, the track pulses with tension - passive aggression hitting like a whip, promises un-promised, salvation turning numb. At its heart is the hypnotic refrain: “Long lost pleasers, steadying the ship,” a mantra that lingers, both a lament and a quiet rebellion.

“Steadying The Ship is about the ones who become so devoted to maintaining peace that they forget their own truth” the band explains. “The Long Lost Pleasers are those who silence themselves to keep things from falling apart. What starts as an act of grace turns into a slow, quiet disappearance.” With a choir-backed outro swelling into cosmic calm, the song immerses listeners in a space where passivity is both a refuge and a slow erosion of self. The vocals, performed by Arika Adams, dissolve into melodic humming and primal cries - an aching plea for salvation from this Long Lost Feeling. The mood is further enhanced by Haizea Huegun’s rich string arrangements.

The EP also includes ‘Woman In Love’, a collaboration with Irish dark synth-wave specialists Tiny Magnetic Pets, with Paula Gilmer’s sublime vocals complementing a glitchy reimagining of an evergreen classic. The collection is completed by a piano arrangement of the title track from Matt Wilier, the Parisian composer. ‘Steadying The Ship (The Calm Sea)’ is a beautiful rendition which brings new light to the song. ‘Steadying The Ship’ is more than a song - it’s a reflection of human dynamics in times of unrest. Who holds steady, and who gets lost in the process? Hence doesn’t provide the answers but invites listeners to sink into the question.

To further expand its meaning, a series of striking videos and images will accompany the single, transforming its themes into a visual narrative where film meets fashion and the bizarre becomes beautifully normal.

Steadying The Ship’ is available on all streaming platforms through Cosmic Cassettes, from 16th April 2025.

Permafrost is a post-punk band, originally from Molde in Norway, which was formed in 1982 by school friends Frode Heggdal Larsen & Kåre Steinsbu. Robert Heggdal & Trond Tornes joined in 2001, and Daryl Bamonte in 2016. They take their name from a song by Magazine, and other influences are Joy Division, The Cure, Talking Heads, Pere Ubu, Fad Gadget, The Residents, Wire and Wolfgang Press. Trond Tornes left the band in 2022 to pursue other projects.

To date they have released the five critically acclaimed singles, 'Femme Fatale', 'Closed Eyes', 'Restore Us' and 'Come Back To Surprise', which all reached #1 on the Indie Disko Top40 chart (“Closed Eyes” for 6 consecutive weeks) as well as listing high on both the Deutsche Alternative and Native25 charts. They were added to numerous playlists including Apple Music’s 'New in Rock'. This year 'Wrong Heart' went top 5 in the ID Top40.

Nordic-British quartet Permafrost continue to deliver the authentic post-punk sound of the early '80s with the release of ‘Ultimo August’ on 16th August. The single follows the band's acclaimed comeback track, ‘Wrong Heart’,  and serves as a final preview of their forthcoming album, The Light Coming Through, hailed for release 11th October.

Permafrost shatter expectations with ‘Ultimo August’ by delivering a brooding summer anthem that heralds their forthcoming album. Lead singer Kåre Steinsbu’s haunting baritone howls weave a tale of heartbreak and introspection as the track delves into the personal reckoning required to mend a fractured relationship. Driven by pulsating basslines and intricate guitar work, the track juxtaposes the icy darkness of winter against the yearning warmth of summer, evoking comparisons to Interpol, Editors, and New Order

“Ultimo August is a song about a broken relationship and the realisation that it’s necessary to look inward first to work out where it went wrong“ says Permafrost of the single. “It’s a story of a person who is torn between the turbulence of passion and the mundanity of a peaceful life”

Conceived in the chilling depths of Molde, Norway, Permafrost have been igniting the post-punk flame since their formation in 1982. Founded by schoolmates Frode Heggdal Larsen and Kåre Steinsbu, the band has evolved over the decades, incorporating the talents of fellow Norwegian Robert Heggdal and UK-based Daryl Bamonte - a seasoned collaborator with Depeche Mode and The Cure. As authentic purveyors of the genre, Permafrost transport listeners back to the shadowy, goth-filled clubs of the early ‘80s. Whilst countless contemporary artists attempt to replicate the raw energy of this era, Permafrost truly lived it.

Defying the odds of distance, with members dispersed across Trondheim, Oslo and Margate, Permafrost have forged an unbreakable creative bond. Unexpectedly, the pandemic became a catalyst for Permafrost’s creativity, as weekly virtual sessions laid the groundwork for their forthcoming album and refined their long-distance collaborative process. The songwriting process typically begins with guitarist Frode presenting a demo, which bassist Robert (Bob Frost) then develops in Logic Pro, programming drums and other elements. Singer Kåre creates a melody to match and lyrics are selected from a collective vault they have accumulated over the years.  The song is refined through a collaborative process, passing back and forth between all four members until everyone is satisfied.

Utilising this refined process, Permafrost’s forthcoming album, The Light Coming Through, offers a sonic refuge from the chaos of modern life. With their signature blend of synth-infused post-punk and politically charged lyrics, the band delivers a collection of songs that are both introspective and empowering. Self described as “Optimistic Melancholy,” their sound offers solace and inspiration, illuminating a path through life’s darkest corners.

Permafrost’s discography is a testament to their endurance over the years within the music scene. From their humble beginnings with the limited edition 1983 cassette ‘Godtment’, the band has evolved into a formidable force. Their 2019 vinyl EP, ‘Permafrost’ marked a turning point, subsequently gaining wider exposure through a digital release in 2021. Permafrost truly ignited in 2021, with their trio of singles dominating the charts, including an eight-week combined reign for ‘Femme Fatale’ and ‘Closed Eyes’ atop the Indie Disko Top40. These tracks also made waves on the Deutsche Alternative and Native25 charts, earning a coveted spot on Apple Music’s influential "New in Rock" playlist. The unstoppable momentum continued with ‘Restore Us’ which secured the #1 position on both the Indie Disko Top40 and Native25 charts.

‘Ultimo August’ drops on all major streaming platforms on 16th August, a final taste of Permafrost's forthcoming album, The Light Coming Through, due for release on October 11th.

Matt Wilier’s ‘Variations’ album is now on all platforms

Matt Wilier began improvising on piano at the age of 5, with no knowledge of music other than his own feelings and sensations. After practicing for a few years, it was at the music conservatory that he discovered technique and then classical music.

From the age of 12, he would fall asleep listening to Keith Jarrett’s solo piano albums, including ‘The Köln Concert’ and ‘La Scala’. During the same period, after having studied the Romantics (and Chopin’s rubato), he was captivated by impressionist music and became fascinated by the French movement ‘Les Six’. But ultimately, he considers ‘Gaspard de la Nuit’ by Maurice Ravel to be one of the most beautiful piano works.

While retaining his initial desire for improvisation, he threw himself into minimalist and repetitive music, freeing himself from judgement and taking an interest in sonic resonances, frequencies and vibrations of the piano as proof of the passage of time.

In 2019, he released his first EP ‘Jours’, a collection of older improvised recordings, and chose to regularly release tracks resulting from his process of creation with the French label, Bruit Blanc.

‘Variations’, his new 11-track album, will be released on 28th June 2024. The recording of this album was no exception, with Matt once again focusing on resonances. ‘Variations’ is built in the same way, with changing melodies, harmonies and rhythms.

However, this time the piano is not alone, with strings, strings layers, ensemble, and analog bass frequencies as accompaniment.

This album is built like an original movie soundtrack. Images flash by as you close your eyes and listen to it.

Matt is already working on a new solo piano double album, with another version which is its cello and piano reflection… but that’s another story for another time.

Nearing two years since the release of ‘Come Back To Surprise’, the Nordic-British post-punk quartet Permafrost return with their latest single, ‘Wrong Heart’, on 4th July. This release kicks off the lead up to their new album, ‘The Light Coming Through’, set to unveil in October this year. In addition to the single, Mental Overdrive (aka Per Martinsen) has remixed the single, which will also be available on 4th July.

Formed originally in Molde, Norway in 1982 by school friends Frode Heggdal Larsen and Kåre Steinsbu, Permafrost has undergone numerous transformations over the years. Now joined by fellow Norwegian Robert Heggdal and Daryl Bamonte from the UK (who worked very closely with Depeche Mode and The Cure for several years), they continue to deliver the authentic post-punk sound of the early '80s. While many contemporary musicians attempt to replicate this era, Permafrost have lived it. Their latest single, ‘Wrong Heart’, has also evolved over time, ultimately resulting in a dark, bass-driven post-punk track that transports listeners back to the shadowy, goth-filled clubs of the '80s.

Alongside the single, they have released the music video for ‘Wrong Heart’. In a wholesome contrast to the song’s dark sound and nature, the video follows four young girls as they set out to create a music video. Of the video they said “In another dimension Permafrost could be a girl band. In this reality they are planning to create

a music video. They have to drag their equipment into the forest to get to the preferred spot, making it into a road movie with a lot of obstacles on the way - like grazing sheep and deer in the blossoming Norwegian nature. When they finally arrive at the spot and want to start playing, the song finishes. All that work for nothing.”

Spread across Trondheim, Oslo and Margate, Permafrost's creative process is a challenge which the band have had to overcome. During the pandemic, they held weekly video meetings to plan new songs and other band-related issues, leveraging improved long-distance collaboration technology to maintain momentum. The songwriting process typically begins with one member suggesting an idea, which bassist Robert (Bob Frost) then develops in Logic Pro, programming drums and other elements. Singer Kåre (Curry) creates a melody to match, and lyrics are selected from a collective vault they have accumulated over the years. The song is refined through a collaborative process, passing back and forth between all four members until everyone is satisfied.

Utilising their refined songwriting process, Permafrost meticulously crafted their forthcoming album, ‘The Light Coming Through’. Describing their sound as “Optimistic Melancholy” the album aims to offer inspiration and escapism during challenging times. Infusing politically charged lyrics with dark, synth-infused post-punk instrumentation, Permafrost employs metaphors to convey their message effectively.

Permafrost has built an impressive discography over the years. They debuted with the 'Godtment' EP in 1983, released on a limited edition of 50 numbered cassettes. In 2019, they followed up with the 'Permafrost' EP on vinyl, later making it available digitally in 2021. Throughout 2021, the band dropped three critically acclaimed singles. ‘Femme Fatale’ and ‘Closed Eyes’ both achieved remarkable success, reaching #1 on the Indie Disko Top40 chart, with the latter maintaining the top spot for six consecutive weeks. These singles also performed well on the Deutsche Alternative and Native25 charts, while earning placements on influential playlists such as Apple Music’s ‘New in Rock’. The third single, ‘Restore Us’, continued their streak of success by hitting #1 on the Indie Disko Top40 and the Native25 chart.

‘Wrong Heart’ and its accompanying music video will be available from 4th July whilst their upcoming album ‘The Light Coming Through’ is due to release this October. Alongside the single, Mental Overdrive (aka Per Martinsen) has remixed the single, which will also be available on 4th July.

Hence values artistic freedom and embraces fate and modular creativity. The band collaborates with diverse artists to shape their music, making each creation unique.

Copenhagen, May 2024: A meeting in Berlin led to the formation of Hence. They are releasing their debut single 'Stuck In My Throat' on June 5, 2024. The song features singers Kennie Orsted and Yasmin Haddad, with a remix by music producer Phaser. Published by Archangelo Music/BMG.

NAEON TEARDROPS - Let me Love You

N∆EON TE∆RDROPS is a new artist alias from Norwegian techno and electronica veteran Per Martinsen, mostly known under his Norwegian Grammy-awarded guise MENTAL OVERDRIVE.

Stepping out of his familiar instrumental electronic productions and into vocal-based songwriting, N∆EON TE∆RDROPS explore influences of the synthpop and darkwave of his formative years, while aiming to put these influences into a more contemporary context.

The debut album TESTIMONY was released in September 2023, and contained 10 tracks flirting with alternative electropop, echoes of eighties darkwave, breakbeat-fuelled nineties power-ballads and noughties electronica – all brought to life with a 2023 twist.

The brand new single LET ME LOVE YOU, to be released on January 19th 2024, is a cover version of DJ Snake and Justin Bieber’s smash hit from 2016.

The song became a personal earworm when Norway – as one of the few countries in the world – decided to shut down FM radio and transition to digital broadcasting back in 2017, leaving only a single local Top 40 station available on the FM car radio.

LET ME LOVE YOU was then on heavy rotation, and somehow never lost its grip, so it was decided that the best way to deal with it was to make a cover version.

A music video for the song, shot and directed by Carl Critical in a derelict building in the town centre of Tromsø, features Per Martinsen diving into the world of improvised dance.

The previously unreleased song HEAVEN is bundled as a «b-side» to the single.

The music of N∆EON TE∆RDROPS was born out of Martinsen’s writing project PYRAMIDS ON THE MOON – a fictional autobiography in three parts where he explores three alternative timelines of his own life, and where each of his three imagined personalities create music under different artist aliases.

A ROSE ON THE ROAD (At the traffic lights) JULES MAXWELL (featuring Polly Scattergood)

Archangelo Recordings is proud to announce the release of A Rose On The Road (At The Traffic Lights) by Jules Maxwell and Polly Scattergood on Friday 30th June 2023.

A Rose On The Road first appeared as an instrumental on Jules Maxwell's exquisite 2022 album Cycles. The title however had originated from a suggestion made by Polly Scattergood and, after the Cycles release, she and Jules continued to develop this darkly cinematic vocal version. Featuring Scattergood's quietly seductive words and Maxwell's delicate orchestration, the song paints a picture of a city, late at night and dark events unfolding, unnoticed, in plain sight.

The track is also available in a remixed version by Glowlines.

Jules Maxwell is a multi-instrumentalist composer and songwriter.

He plays keyboards for Australian band Dead Can Dance and in May 2021 released a critically acclaimed album with Lisa Gerrard, entitled Burn.

In 2021 he also released Nocturnes on Archangelo Recordings - a beautifully melancholic collection of instrumental pieces, much of it written in collaboration with the UK dance company Vincent Dance Theatre.

This was followed in 2022 by a second volume of instrumentals entitled Cycles.

He composed 4 songs for Le Mystére des Voix Bulgares 2018 album Boocheemish and the song First of July which appeared on Foy Vance’s debut album Hope.

Jules has also collaborated with Duke Special on numerous recordings, shows and projects including the 2009 National Theatre production of Mother Courage directed by Deborah Warner.

His work at Shakespeare’s Globe, includes the 2016 production of The Merchant of Venice starring Jonathan Pryce and the 2017 production of Boudica starring Gina McKee.

He has created modern dance soundtracks for Wayne McGregor, Cathy Marston, Vincent Dance Theatre, Bern Ballet, Skanes Dansteater Malmö, Jasmin Vardimon and Candoco Dance Company and in 2019 his debut full length opera The Lost Thing was presented by the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

2023 marks the release of One Night in Porto, a live recording of his Burn show with Lisa Gerrard.

Jules Maxwell is originally from Ireland but currently lives in London with his wife and young son.

Polly Scattergood is a British-based indie electronic artist who enjoys experimenting with sound and lyrics. Polly studied at The Brit School before signing with Daniel Miller - Mute/EMI.

Polly has released four studio albums, three under her own name and one as a side project called onDeadWaves with Mercury-nominated MAPS.

Polly set up her own label and studio, "Future Paradise," based on the Kent Coast and released her last album and EP through FP.

Polly's latest full-length album entitled "In This Moment," charted at number 23 on the Official UK Independent Album Charts.

Polly also hosts a podcast alongside Katie Melua called "The Detail" about the art of songwriting and making records.

Polly is currently in the process of writing her fifth studio album.

N∆EON TE∆RDROPS is a new artist alias from Norwegian techno and electronica veteran Per Martinsen, mostly known under his guise MENTAL OVERDRIVE.

Stepping out of his familiar instrumental electronic productions and into vocal-based songwriting, N∆EON TE∆RDROPS explore influences of the synthpop and darkwave of his formative years, while aiming to put these influences into a more contemporary context.

The music of N∆EON TE∆RDROPS was born out of his writing project PYRAMIDS ON THE MOON - a fictional autobiography in three parts where he explores three alternative timelines of his own life, and where each of his three imagined personalities create music under different artist aliases.

N∆EON TE∆RDROPS released the single AMNESIACS/BROTHERHOOD in 2021, reaching no 8 in the Deutsche Alternative Charts, followed by SHADOWSISTER/THE FIGUREHEAD in 2022, which reached no 12 in the same chart.

The new single WATERS RISING will be out on March 17th 2023, and takes us on a deep and melancholy melodic ride atop a slow beat suitable for the more soulful and mellow dancefloors.

A music video for WATERS RISING shot in downtown San Francisco by Stein Sørlie adds to the emotion of the song, and allows for contemplation around the challenges we face as a species in these troubled times.

A full album entitled TESTIMONY is in its final completion, and will be released on June 9th, and N∆EON TE∆RDROPS is now also open for live bookings through Standing Ovation Agency.

EMILY DICKINSON

In March 2022 I was introduced to a local piano restorer and after talking to him about his work decided to have my Steinway restored. I’ve owned it for more than 20 years and it’s always been in need of some love and attention. Bill came to my house and we started chatting about pianos and keyboards and he asked me if I’d heard of the Una Corda. He said he was considering making one and asked if I would be interested in trying it out.

I immediately fell in love with the instrument, something about its percussive yet fragile sound just made me play it in a certain way, I instantly started playing arpeggios and repetitive themes… I ended up with 7 songs and a title, ‘7 Different Words For Love’.

Around the same time my friend Orian Williams was working on a movie in Georgia with Darren Le Gallo. I always share my work with Orian so I sent him my favourite from this new collection, ‘Two’. He played it to Darren and they asked me to score the movie they were working on, ‘Sam & Kate’.

Originally I thought it would just be a case of placing the 7 songs or edits in the places in the film where they wanted score but I was wrong and ended up writing about 50 new pieces using the same palette of piano, Una Corda, harmonium and cello. It was at times a super-frustrating experience and I came close to walking away several times. However, I persevered and my relationship with Darren blossomed both musically and personally. Finally he came to my studio with Orian and we finished the score in a couple of days (an “overnight success” that took 5 months).

At the end of this I still had the seven songs plus one other, ‘One Last Word’, which seriously Darren pulled out of me, and I have decided to release this collection as an album.

It’s only going to be digital for now with a single piece of art made by my friend from art school Ian Wright. We are going to make this available as a signed (him and me) limited edition art print in December. The album was mixed by Paul ‘Corky’ Corkett, a long time friend and incredible mix engineer. Playing cello is another friend Miriam Wakeling whose delicate interpretation of my writing is just about perfect.

The movie ‘Sam & Kate’, with my original score, is on general release from 11th November and VOD 18th November

The ‘7 Different Words For Love’ album will be available on all streaming platforms from 11th November
