Southern California deathcore titans CARNIFEX have released their brand new album, More Than Misery, via Sumerian Records. To mark its arrival, the band have also shared the official music video for "The Process Of Pain", featuring Chaney Crabb of Entheos. Stream the album HERE and watch the video BELOW.
Twenty-one years into a career spent staring directly into grief, isolation, anxiety and the fight to survive, CARNIFEX have turned that history into the central statement behind More Than Misery. Earlier records captured vocalist Scott Ian Lewis attempting to endure and process pain while he was still living inside it. Across these ten tracks, he writes from the aftermath, confronting toxic relationships, past trauma, the person in the mirror and the lasting damage those experiences leave behind.
The title carries a deliberate double meaning. “More than misery” can suggest something even worse waiting beyond the darkness, however, for Scott Ian Lewis, it expresses the recognition that a life can contain suffering without being consumed by it and that there is a better life waiting on the other side of the struggle.
Speaking on the album, Scott Ian Lewis shares:
“Carnifex as a band are more driven and focused than ever and More Than Misery isn’t just an album. It’s a statement of survival and a decent into the darkness of living with and surviving past trauma. We wrote this album to be a reminder, that the only way out is through. This album was meant to be listened to start to finish. Deep dive the lyrics, become more than your past, become More Than Misery.”
Musically, More Than Misery brings the instincts that shaped CARNIFEX in 2005 into the present with twenty-one years of experience behind them. The record combines the physical directness of first-wave deathcore with the band’s death-metal foundations, blackened atmosphere, symphonic scale and increasingly prominent lead-guitar work. Guitars sit firmly at the front, orchestration deepens their impact and every song was written with the live room in mind.
With more time to write, scrap and rebuild than on any previous album, CARNIFEX tracked More Than Misery in Tennessee across approximately five to six weeks with Zach Householder of Whitechapel. The record was mixed by Jeff Dunne and marks the band’s first full-length release for Sumerian Records.

ABOUT CARNIFEX
Formed in Fallbrook, California, in 2005 by vocalist Scott Ian Lewis and drummer Shawn Cameron, CARNIFEXemerged from the collision of death metal, black metal, metalcore and the physical energy of Southern California’s all-ages hardcore scene. Their early music helped establish the language of deathcore’s first wave, while nine studio albums and twenty-one years of relentless touring have made them one of the genre’s most durable forces.
Across albums including Dead in My Arms, Hell Chose Me, Die Without Hope, Slow Death, World War X and Necromanteum, CARNIFEX have expanded their sound through blackened atmosphere, symphonic scale and an increasingly prominent melodic and lead-guitar presence. Through deathcore’s initial rise, years of backlash and its current resurgence, the band have remained committed to the music they helped shape.
That durability is rooted in the way CARNIFEX operate. Scott Ian Lewis, Shawn Cameron, Cory Arford, Neal Tiemann and Fred Calderon function as five equal band members with two decades of friendship behind them. Their relationship with listeners has endured just as long, with fans and band members moving through adulthood together and repeatedly showing one another that neither side is alone.
On More Than Misery, CARNIFEX bring twenty-one years of hard-earned live instinct to a record written from the far side of survival, built to hit with the same force when they step onstage.
