ABOUT TARJA:
The brightest star of the symphonic rock scene, Tarja Turunen is certainly the most internationally well-known Finnish voice in the world of music. Soprano, composer, and songwriter, she reached international fame co-founding and being for nine years the voice and image of the Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish, collecting with them Gold and Platinum Record Awards in several countries.

The unique combination of metal music with Tarja's soprano lead vocals gave birth to a new genre, quickly achieving critical and commercial popularity and inspiring many other metal bands and performers. But singing only somebody else's creations was not her destiny, and her talent could fully bloom only outside that crate. Tarja had to walk alone.

Finally free to follow her own inspirations, heart, and dreams, Tarja started her own solo career successfully devoted to both classical and rock music.

Tarja was nominated for the Emma Award in Finland in 2006 and 2007 and for the Echo Award in Germany in 2007, and she is the first Finnish solo artist to achieve a Gold Record in Germany and even more, the only one to do it both in a band and as solo artist. In 2015 and 2016, she was also busy starring as coach in two seasons of The Voice of Finland, which is the most watched TV-program from Channel 4 in Finland and leading her team to victory for two years in a row, something that never happened before in the history of the Finnish show.

After over 15 years of a solo career, it was finally time to celebrate. The Best Of: Living the Dream combines the best and most beloved songs from Tarja’s prolific solo career in one outstanding package.

NONEXISTER Shares Video For "Drowning In The Void"

After the Zurich-based NONEXISTER released their very first single, "Your Pain Up My Veins," including a spectacularly dark video starring actressCarol Schuler at the end of March, the cinematic video for the current single "Drowning In The Void" is released today.

Watch it below.

The band dedicates the song to loved ones who have been unexpectedly lost in the prime of life, who left their lives without warning.

Singer Nik Leuthold says, "The lyrics were written after the death of a good friend of mine. They describe the state of shock you fall into when you receive such a horrifying message. The shock throws you into a kind of surreal in-between world and you don't understand anything anymore. You don't feel any pain at first, but are left stunned, and the everyday actions you continue to perform seem absurd. One stands bewildered and disoriented outside of space and time, watching the world and oneself in wonder without any real connection to either. The only warmth you find lies in the memory of the lost person, the same memory that hurts so heavily."

Bandmate Marco Neeser adds, "Grounded guitars combined with electronic noises create a tension that leads through the whole song. It meanders through the vastness of the desert, leading into a sweeping noisy soundscape before diving back into a deep, dark chorus. Musically, the song is based on a track of my former band Division Kent. I showed the original version to Nik, who loved it, and the track inspired him immediately to write new lyrics and vocal lines. It was striking how this completely changed the atmosphere of the song and gave it a new profound meaning."

Nik continues, "The video was a wonderful collaboration with director Justin Stoneham. He is not only a fantastic and award-winning director, but as well a wonderful team player. It was clear to me from the beginning, that the in between world would lead the visual direction, and I already had a first script. Therefore, I needed a director who would be willing to develop this idea. Meeting Justin was a huge stroke of luck, because apart from his skills, he knows these situations from his own personal experience and agrees on the image of an intermediate world as an interpretation of them."

Director Justin Stoneham says of the shoot, "I have only positive things to say about this project. 'Drowning In The Void' was an incredibly enjoyable experience from start to finish. We were fortunate to have an exceptional crew on board. Furthermore, the collaboration with NONEXISTER, especially."

NONEXISTER live from the interplay of electronic energy and hard catharsis. As if they were sounding an after-hours club at the end of the world, the Zurich band, consisting of Marco Neeser (electronics, songwriting, production), Nik Leuthold (vocals, songwriting, production), Reto "Fu" Gaffuri (bass), Siro Müller (drums, backing vocals), and Silvan Gerhard (guitar, backing vocals), swing like a pendulum between moments of industrial ecstasy and moshpit-worthy outbursts.

CARNATION Unleashes New Song + Music Video, Reveals New Album Details

'The Belgian death metal stalwarts enter a new era with Cursed Mortality,' due November 3 via Season of Mist

STREAM HERE

Belgian death metal stalwarts Carnation will be releasing their third studio album, 'Cursed Mortality,' on November 3, 2023 via Season of Mist! The band is now unleashing a haunting music video for the title track, which can be found below.

"Carnation fans will undoubtedly find what they have come to love and expect on 'Cursed Mortality,' however, they should also expect the unexpected." teases vocalist Simon Duson. "This song captures the essence of our musical evolution. It's an epic journey that explores a wide range of musical landscapes all while looking back at life's pivotal moments. Am I happy and satisfied with how I've lived my life? Where did it go wrong or right?"

Indeed, 'Cursed Mortality' signifies a new era for Carnation as it demonstrates an evolutionary period for the band. While the Belgian slayers still hold the values of traditional death metal, they step outside of their comfort zone with more melody and technicality, showcasing their versatility as musicians and clearly defining their own unique sound.

To further illustrate the band's new era, frontman Simon Duson is also now revealing a brand new countenance, as seen in the new music video!

'Cursed Mortality' follows up 'Where Death Lies,' which was named among one of the best records of 2020 by Loudwire (Best Songs of 2020), The Pit, Chicago Music Guide, Pandemonium Metal, and more! Carnation was also named among one of the 50 Greatest Death Metal Bands Right Now by Kerrang! (#14).

The album can be pre-saved across all streaming services HERE while pre-sales will be revealed at a later date.

ENVY OF NONE UNVEIL ANIMATED VIDEO FOR ‘THAT WAS THEN’ NEW EP ‘THAT WAS THEN, THIS IS NOW’ OUT NOW VIA KS

In celebration of the release of their new EP ‘That Was Then, This Is Now’, Envy of None have revealed a beautiful and striking new video. Recalling the idea of retro Pop Art genius Roy Lichtenstein seen through the lens of a psychedelic graphic novel in the beautiful clip’s vibrant and stylistic imagery.

Created by Olivier Boscovitch (YouTube / Instagram), who has previously worked with David Guetta, the artist was handpicked by Andy Curran, to create a video that was inspired by Maiah Wynne’s lyrics representing both a metaphorical and literal chase.

LISTEN / ORDER HERE - https://EnvyOfNone.lnk.to/TWTTIN
WATCH Below

Andy Curran comments:

The video was created by the super talented Olivier Boscovitch. I discovered some of his work online and reached out to him and he loved the song ‘That Was Then’. He was inspired by the dark and haunting lyrics that Maiah wrote for the song. He pitched the concept of a girl riding a chopper and travelling through a fictional trippy landscape , basically her life, while being chased by a bad assed villain in a muscle car. The  driver  of the car represents the person in our lives that we’re getting away from. Olivier’s amazing graphics are a testament to his unique creativity, we’re very lucky to be working with him.

He continues:

I’m super proud of the new song, Ty Dennis played a killer drum track that breathed new life into the song and we’re very grateful that Alex reached out to him. I think the track itself shows a real growth for Envy of None. It’s like we’ve hit out stride creatively and a nice marker to punctuate that our first record was not a one and done thing. It really opened the floodgates for us writing wise and we’re well on our way to a 2nd record.

The all-star line up of Alex Lifeson , Andy Curran, Maiah Wynne and Alf Annibalini, continue their exponential growth of their trippy, edgy atmospheric sound that took the world by surprise. The new EP is made up of very adventurous tracks that consist of remixes of ‘Dumb’ and ‘Dog’s Life’. Alongside ‘Lethe River’ and ‘You’ll Be Sorry’ only previously released on the deluxe edition of their debut record.

Following these, the EP culminates with a newly recorded track ‘That Was Then’. The song undulates with progressive dexterity and is a perfect example of the unbound writing ability this incredible band showcase.

All tracks were written, arranged, recorded and produced by Envy of None.

‘That Was Then, This Is Now’ remains in canon with the band’s sound of their eponymous debut whilst also pushing the boundaries and is a fantastic prologue to the next chapter of Envy of None’s story as the band have been in the studio creating new music and remixes.

An essential addition to their repertoire.

Toronto-NYC power trio ON moves from frustration to euphoria on new 'Make Me' single

"A cool album. A smart album. A deftly crafted album. A rock album? Yes…but much more. So much more" ~ Big Takeover Magazine

"A clever blend of pop melody with raw rock abrasiveness in quite a potent sonic sucker punch. Their very tight weave of classic and alt rock coated grunge works fabulously" ~ The Spill Magazine

"Its DNA intwértwined with sounds once pounded out by the likes of the Pumpkins, Hole and L7...  one of the most exciting outfits to emerge post-pandemic" ~ Global Texan Chronicles

With one foot in Toronto and the other in NYC, indie rock power trio
ON is back with the new single 'Make Me', a song of frustration and wanting to recapture that euphoria. This is a cry for what once was... and then resolution and a peaceful acceptance of what is.

Released via Toronto-based imprint
Indiestructable Records, this single sees the trio carry on the legacy of the band from which they were formed - 90's Sire Records band Acid Test.

ON is a riveting power trio led by Lucy Di Santo (vocals, bass) with Dan Cornelius on drums and Steve Fall on guitars - apart from Acid Test, its members have also been in other popular Toronto bands Danko Jones and Deliuss. Dishing out infectious guitar riffs with a dash of groove, their adrenaline-laden music is a invigorating, the band paying homage to their post-punk, grunge, old-school funk and 90s college rock roots.

"After our first release and jaunt with Acid Test, I was at a crossroads of musical styles; I had a desire to go back to a raw, gritty and powerful sound - I wanted to play a simple driving riff that expressed the frustration and yet immense drive I was feeling. Lyrically - I wanted to feel that “thing” that inspired me to want to pick up a guitar/bass in the first place; so I first wrote the ‘Make Me’ riff on a guitar. It was kind of a “oh yeah.. so take that” kind of musical statement," says Lucy Di Santo.

'Make Me' chants a polite ask (or task) of wanting to recapture that novelty, dopamine-fueled feeling that something – or someone – once sparked; to re-live a fantasy. “Can you make me want you...again?” Then followed by that bucket-of-cold water reality check and regret analysis: “Monday morning I thought I knew you. Come Thursday...I don’t really care to – never meant to!” Somethings and people come into one’s life for a reason – and some for a season. Living in the now – facing things as they are – growing up. And it’s all ok too......

"I have a vivid memory of us in our band’s rehearsal space on the corner of Queen and Bathurst in downtown Toronto, all of us pressed up against each other with our gear and in the moment, really just going for it. Everyone’s heads down into their instrument and looking up once in a while, smiling at each other and feeding off the energy of this heavy guitar driven song that we had collectively written. From the start of the first riff and the build of the snare crashing into the main riff, with the odd time section and Steve’s signature double-stop guitar work, Lucy’s heavy groove on bass coupled with her powerful vocals, we knew we had a song that was an audio equivalent of 70’s Barracuda on full throttle, tearing down a deserted canyon road at sunset," says drummer Dan Cornelius.

Steve Fall adds, "This song really came to life in a big way during our tour of Mexico in the mid-90s with fellow Canadian rockers Rusty. Such good times. 'Make Me' brings back fond memories of my mother playfully giving my former military father the finger behind his back".

The band recently wrapped up recording sessions at
BC Studio in Brooklyn with legendary producer Martin Bisi, famed for his groundbreaking work with Sonic Youth, Swans, Brian Eno, John Zorn, Herbie Hancock, Iggy Pop, Helmet, Africa Bambaataa, Dresden Dolls, Unsane, Cop Shoot Cop and many other notable artists.

ON also recently completed an extensive US tour in support of their critically-acclaimed 'ON' album, co-produced by
Darius Szczepaniak (Sum 41, Black Crowes, Big Sugar, Bare Naked Ladies, Jann Arden) at Phase One Studios in Toronto. The album received extensive press and radio attention, not to mention charting in the Radio Indie Alliance charts consecutively for nearly a year.

As of June 13, 'Make Me' is available from
fine music platforms, including SpotifyApple Music and Bandcamp, where the trio's 'ON' album can also be obtained digitally or on CD.

Atlanta duo I Am a Rocketship presents new single 'Do You Feel Good' feat. Kellii Scott (Failure, Veruca Salt, Dr. Dre, Pink)

"‘Do You Feel Good’ is laden with a swaggering attitude and a thunderous delivery augmented by a raking guitar riff. Frontwoman L E Kippner has a laconic delivery with style and power – indeed the duo have the melodies and thunder similar to Shirley Manson and Garbage. The sound is epic and dramatic with an euphoric, anthemic chorus and a delicious taste of wry cynicism" ~ Backseat Mafia

Atlanta-based atmospheric alt-pop duo
I Am a Rocketship present their new single 'Do You Feel Good', a powerful introduction to their forthcoming album 'La Cruella', a collection of ten tracks about uncertainty, fear and dreams.

'Do You Feel Good' is about how people transform into their perceived personas - from folks wanting to dress like Instagram influencers when they travel, to politicians creating fictional back stories, this song asks if you truly feel good once you are an artificial construct.

Always based around melodies, I Am a Rocketship mixes warm vocals, loud guitars, and cool electronic beats to explore that place where rock and trip-hop never quite met.

While I Am a Rocketship is a self-contained duo (writing, recording, and creating art and videos themselves), this single represents the first time they have enlisted an outside contributor -
Kellii Scott. Perhaps best known as the drummer for the legendary band Failure and his work with other artists, including Veruca Salt, Dr. Dre, Pink, Enemy and Christina Aguilera.

"We tried a different way of writing songs for this album, and it turned out that every song had a story. Since our musical style has changed a bit with this album, the way that the lyrics tell those stories has changed as well. These songs don't spell out what is happening but are about feelings. We hope people will find something to recognize, maybe feel that one of the song speaks to them," says frontwoman L E Kippner.

"It was fun adding Kelli's drums to our sound. He recorded the drums separately and the final song didn't end up at all like we expected because when we heard the drums it inspired a lot of changes to the rest. I wouldn't mind doing more collaborative work in the future."

Before I Am a Rocketship, Eric Weissinger was a bassist and guitarist backing up various artists and opening for the likes of The Wedding Present, The Black Crowes and James. Everything changed due to a chance meeting with L E Kippner - cellist, scientist, radio DJ and singer for Swedish synth-pop duo Neobox. After forming Hitchcock Blondes in Ohio, they relocated to Atlanta to try new ideas and launched I Am a Rocketship, for which their music has been warmly met across the world.

'La Cruella' will be the band's sixth major release, following their 2016 debut album 'Mission Control', the 'Mind Grafitti' album (2019), 'Ghost Stories' album (2020), the 'oRAnGE' EP (2020) and the latest long-player 'Lies and Legends' (2021).

"We just let go on this album, and often jokingly said "well, this is going to kill any reputation we had."  It's very pure, for want of a better term. We just wrote what we felt," explains Eric Weissinger.

"This album is more improvisational than the others. A lot of the instrumental tracks were first takes, no punches or correcting. I wouldn't say there was less thought put into this, but it was less planned than our other albums."

As of June 13, 'Do You Feel Good' is available as a
Bandcamp exclusive. On August 4, the full 'La Cruella' album will be released on all fine music platforms, including Spotify and Apple Music.

HORRENDOUS release second advanced single, announce tour

Philly's filthiest and finest progressive death metal band already gave us a glimpse at their new album. Now, HORRENDOUS are leading us deeper inside 'Ontological Mysterium' with "Cult of Shaad'oah".

"Beat me back, but I'll keep on climbing!" That's how the band kicks off the album's second single. They're so eager to crack skulls that they're practically foaming at the mouth.

Prepare for brutal ascent, indeed. "Cult of Shaad'oah" is a blazing onslaught of bombastic, old-school death metal. It sounds like carving your way up Mount Doom with the evil sword from Soulcaliber. Cymbals crash and ping, while dueling leads race toward a fiery death.

Here's what the band has to say about "Cult of Shaad'oah": "This song is a symbolic quest through the wastes of doubt and slumbering awareness. Its nameless hero ascends from the underworld to the heights of the gods, daring to penetrate the outer reaches of the universe itself and become master of all".

'Ontological Mysterium' will be released on August 18, 2023 by Season of Mist. Pre-save

“Surprises always come up during writing — spontaneous ideas pull you into new territory and enable the realization of novel possibilities that previously were inaccessible.”

Such are the words from Horrendous drummer Jamie Knox when discussing the creation of the band’s fifth full-length, the highly anticipated 'Ontological Mysterium'. Knox’s quote also encapsulates Horrendous’s approach to extreme metal. Since 2009, the band has capably tapped into the inaccessible by providing a fresh, unconventional take on death metal that harnesses technical brilliance with elaborate, mind-melding melodies, frothy, spewing vocals and labyrinthine song structures. This combination has made each Horrendous long play a clinic in the gratifyingly unorthodox. The trend continues on Ontological Mysterium.

The follow-up to 2018’s Idol was recorded, mixed and mastered at Subterranean Watchtower Studios in Virginia, which doubles as the homestead of guitarist/vocalist Damian Herring. While the band (completed by guitarist/vocalist Matt Knox and bassist Alex Kulick) finished much of the songwriting for Ontological Mysterium in 2019, its recording was delayed by the 2020 global pandemic and various life events. Horrendous eventually finished recording in early 2022 and mastered the album before the start of 2023.

The album upholds Horrendous’s position as one of the underground’s best outside-of-the-box extreme metal bands. Having long abandoned concern whether people would appreciate their “uniqueness,” Horrendous has embraced its role as a band willing to veer far from death metal conventions, intentionally stretching and breaking norms. To wit, the band primarily views its music as filtered through a death metal lens. This may be Horrendous’s defining trait: By not accepting parameters, nothing is off-limits.

THE VOYNICH CODE Drop Brand New Single & Video; "The Last Grain"

Portuguese deathcore masters, The Voynich Code, have unleashed brand new single ‘The Last Grain’ today. The track is the band's second release since announcing their signing to Unique Leader Records and dropping the crushing single ‘Unholy Catastrophe’ in April this year. Combining elements of technical death metal, progressive metal and deathcore, The Voynich Code are pushing genre limits to create a sound that blends technical proficiency and emotional depth with heavy guitar riffs, groovy drums and dramatic keyboards and is as unique as it is brutal.

Listen to ‘The Last Grain’ HERE and watch the accompanying video below.

Speaking on the lyrical content of their new track, The Voynich Code share

“The Last Grain” dives into the detrimental habit of fixating on the past, wasting valuable seconds of our lives. The past is something that gets a hold of us really tight of the present, losing sight of any joy the future may hold.

For many of us, the weight of the past is only released when the last grain of the hourglass drops. It is in that moment that we understand that our whole existence is now just that: “the past”. By constantly looking back, we have wasted a lifetime, subjecting ourselves to needless suffering over something beyond our control.

The past is the past, it’s gone. The moment is now, or never."

ABOUT THE VOYNICH CODE

Hailing from the sunny city of Lisbon, Portugal, The Voynich Code are one of the most exciting and innovative European bands in the genre. They burst onto the scene in 2014 with their break-out, debut single ‘Antithesis’ and have since released two EPs - 2015's 'Ignotum' and 2021's 'Post Mortem' and one full-length album, 2017's 'Aqua Vitae'.

The three releases garnered the band much critical acclaim, with fans and press alike drawing favorable comparisons to deathcore legends, Thy Art Is Murder. Over the course of the last 9 years, the band have continued to push genre limits and creating a more expansive, multi-dimensional death metal sound exhibited by the 'Post Mortem' EP which is widely regarded as the band's darkest and most technical collection to date.

The Voynich Code have toured extensively throughout Europe and Asia, performing at prestigious festivals like UK Tech Fest and Resurrection Fest and supporting acts like The Faceless on their 2018 album release tour. To date, the band have over 1,000,000 streams and 850,000 YouTube views across releases.

The band announced their signing to globally renowned extreme metal label, Unique Leader Records, in April of 2023 and dropped new single 'Unholy Catastrophe', heralding a new era. The band are currently working on their highly anticipated sophomore album which will be released later this year.

The Voynich Code are more than just a band. They are a force of nature.

Of Virtue Announce Upcoming Album "Omen"

OF VIRTUE ANNOUNCE UPCOMING ALBUM OMEN  OUT SEPTEMBER 29 VIA ARISING EMPIRE

What began as a humble, promising metalcore act born from the blistering chill and barren fields of mid-Michigan has erupted into an internationally recognized and critically acclaimed act with OF VIRTUE. Playing this year's UK Tech Fest, Full Force, Summer Breeze, Fallen Fortress, 6K Fest, and Upheaval festival and accruing a staggering 7 million plus streams on their new SINNER EP on Spotify alone, Of Virtue's growth is nothing short of jaw dropping.

Today, the band is thrilled to share some incredible news.

Of Virtue will release Omen, their most ambitious and heartfelt project to date. This album represents a journey of artistic growth, experimentation, and soul-searching. Featuring the SINNER EP with eight additional tracks in total, this brand new album is all about soaring heavy anthems to fierce ballads.

Set for release on September 29, Omen will be available in limited colored vinyl and CD, along with unique merch options at the Arising Empire online shop, Impericon, and band shop.

Pre-order Omen
here.

"Three years in the making and feeling as if it's the most significant one in our timeline thus far, this album was by far the most difficult to create in many more ways than one and one of the most emotional experience for us," the band says. "Hope that it helps you through your time of need, the way it did us."

Of Virtue were formed in 2008 and catapulted onto the Michigan metalcore scene in 2009 with their debut EP To Breathe Again. Combining elements of melodic hardcore and metalcore into a mosh-friendly and energetic amalgam, the band became a staple within its local scene. Of Virtue issued their debut full-length Heartsounds in 2011, followed by an extensive regional touring cycle. The album found the band expanding on the sound that defined its earlier effort, with lyrics speaking of positivity and determination. It was sonically vicious, yet passionate and inspiring. In 2015, the band dropped Salvation, a sprawling and ambitious example of meticulous and melodic metalcore. Third full-length What Defines You arrived in 2019. That album marked incorporation of alternative styles into a backbone of bold, robust metalcore. Even in the setting of a global pandemic, Of Virtue continued to blossom worldwide, accruing new listeners and fans, effectively expanding their reach even in a time where live performances were all but impossible.

FOUNDING MEMBER OF BLUE ÖYSTER CULT ALBERT BOUCHARD IS RELEASING FINAL INSTALLMENT OF THE IMAGINOS TRILOGY, IMAGINOS III – MUTANT REFORMATION

DEKO ENTERTAINMENT PROUDLY ANNOUNCES ALBERT BOUCHARD, FOUNDING MEMBER OF BLUE ÖYSTER CULT, IS RELEASING FINAL INSTALLMENT OF THE IMAGINOS TRILOGY, IMAGINOS III – MUTANT REFORMATION

FIRST SINGLE “E.T.I.,” FEATURING JOE BOUCHARD, IS OUT NOW!

Albert Bouchard is best known as a founding member of Blue Öyster Cult, along with his brother and bassist Joe Bouchard. The original lineup sold millions of albums for Columbia Records, with such classic songs as “(Don’t Fear) the Reaper” and the #1 hit on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart “Burning for You.” Both Bouchards contributed to songwriting and lead vocals on some of their greatest songs, such as “Cites on Flame With Rock and Roll” and “Hot Rails to Hell.”

Albert Bouchard is back with Imaginos III – Mutant Reformation, wrapping up the trilogy of Imaginos. Bouchard has shepherded the concept of Imaginos through its many incarnations over the years, translating Sandy Pearlman’s feverish visions into sonic resonance. As Bouchard states, “Sandy’s not being here to feel the long-awaited culmination is perhaps the greatest irony of this epic journey through the invisibility of conspiracy, the shape-shifting, and eternal light that is Desdinova.  But legend lives on, as will tales told ‘round the fire of when Man still walked the Earth, and the carnage had yet to begin. Hear the final chapter in this monumental saga when the record is released on July 7, 2023.”

Deko Entertainment president, Bruce Pucciarello, is a fan. He states, “This third and final installment of the Imaginos trilogy is the ending we all hoped for.  The Imaginos story is once again driven by Albert’s carefully orchestrated chronology and a passioned telling of the stories and songs.  He was on a mission.  Mission complete, Albert!”

The first single is Bouchard’s take on the Blue Öyster Cult fan favorite “E.T.I.,” featuring brother Joe Bouchard on lead vocal, Isabella Kosal on background vocals, and R.J. Ronquillo on lead guitar.

Additionally, Bouchard muses about his inspiration to create a video, “Necessity is the mother of invention, so they say. There are things in life that don’t work out as we plan. Man plans, God laughs is another saying. Be that as it is, I did my best to create a lighthearted and unusual lyric video. Yes, we could have just had the song with the static album cover like everybody else, but Ian Hunter would never go for that and I’d rather not either. The official music video will come out sometime in the future.”
View lyric video below.

The album is available now for preorder and features guests “Ross the Boss” Friedman and Andy Shernoff (Dictators); Joe Cerisano (Silver Condor, TSO); Kenny Aaronson (Billy Idol, Bob Dylan); and Kasim Sulton (Utopia, Meat Loaf). It reunites original Blue Öyster Cult members Eric Bloom and Joe Bouchard, as well as current BÖC member Richie Castellano, who all contribute to this latest installment. The album also features reworks of classics like “E.T.I.,” “Godzilla,” and “Sole Survivor.” There will be limited-edition bundles, including a very limited colored-vinyl option (only 250 copies).

Deko Entertainment—Art Has Value

URM Academy Launches "How It's Done" Production Course With Legendary Producer Jens Bogren + Multi-Instrumentalist Ihsahn

The most in-depth course for metal music production ever made!

“This course will serve as a compass for the aspiring producer to navigate the crooked map that is metal music production. It will help you understand the psychological aspects, the theories behind, as well as being THE practical handbook on how it’s actually done.”
- Jens Bogren

Today URM Academy, the world’s best education for rock and metal producers, has launched their “How It’s Done” production series with the legendary Swedish music producer Jens Bogren (Opeth, Dimmu Borgir) and Norwegian multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and composer, Ihsahn, best known for his work with black metal band Emperor. The series was executive produced by URM’s CEO and co-founder Eyal Levi, also known as a founding member of metal band Dååth.

The “How It’s Done” course is all about Bogren's production, engineering, and mixing in hyper detail. This is a start-to-finish style course where it follows Bogren from pre-production all the way through mastering on Ihsahn's Fascination Street Sessions EP. The song featured in the course is "The Observer," which can be listened to
here.

Speaking about the course, Bogren says, “My “How It’s Done“ was created to be the most in-depth course for metal music production ever made. As much as it’s a practical handbook for all tasks involving production, recording and mixing, it’s also a road map for the thought-process and the psychological aspects of working with an artist. Newbies or seasoned professionals: everyone will have something to learn from this.”

The course is 35 hours long and it contains EVERY step of what Jens does, explained in full detail and in real time, during the actual production of Ihsahn's music. Why is this such a special course? The filming was not put together after the EP was completed. The song was written for this purpose and Ihsahn is involved in the entire process. There's never been a recording course that goes into this kind of detail with this level of artist.

Ihsahn says, “This course showcases all the technology, but also all the magic of traditional recording in extreme detail, by one of the finest engineers and producers I ever had the pleasure of working with. I know everyone who gets this will be just as inspired as I was during the process of making it.”

The “How It’s Done” course will cost $349 (or 3 payments of $129) and is available for a very limited time, for one month only starting June 12. Once the sale period ends the course will no longer be available to be purchased, so don’t miss out!

Levi comments, “URM Academy was founded to show you how metal and rock music is actually produced in real life, by the people who make the records you love. This “How It’s Done” course is the pinnacle manifestation of our mission statement. Jens Bogren and Ihsahn truly committed to creating a transparent, comprehensive and practical guide for the modern metal producer. Regardless of what level of skill or experience you’re at, if you’re trying to improve your metal productions, this course is for you.”

The course includes all the technical engineering aspects such as dialing tones, microphones, editing, etc. as well as the actual production, tracking and mixing. Additional features included with the course are multi-tracks for the Ihsahn song, a companion workbook, Q&A's with Jens Bogren and MUCH more. Get full details at

Jenna Paulette Announces Partnership with Justin Boots

Paulette Joins Reba McEntire and George Strait as the
Only Artists Partnered w/ the Beloved Boot Brand

Jenna Paulette’s trademark mix of grit and vulnerability are simply a result of her Texas cowgirl upbringing. It’s that genuineness that has endeared Paulette to Music City, making her a perfect fit for her recently announced partnership with beloved cowboy boot brand, Justin Boots. The deal places Paulette alongside country icons Reba McEntire and George Strait as the only entertainers partnered with the brand.

For Paulette, the partnership is a dream realized. Having worn the boots while growing up and working cattle, Paulette reflects, “Justin Boots…gosh I wore Ropers to work in and that’s why I put ‘new Justin Boots’ in my song ‘Country In the Girl.’ I really believe that song helped me find my footing with my audience.

“This partnership means the world to me, from what Justin does for Rodeo Athletes to the way they represent agriculture and support the future of it. It’s an honor to get to further the heart of their brand together. I can’t wait to see what we do.”

“We are excited to announce our partnership with Jenna Paulette. Jenna’s unwavering commitment to authentic storytelling and her deep connection with her fans perfectly aligns with the core values of Justin Boots,” said Taylor Morton, Public Relations Manager at Justin Boots. “This partnership goes beyond just boots - it signifies a shared dedication to celebrating the western way of life. We are immensely proud to welcome Jenna to the Justin family and are thrilled to be part of Jenna’s journey.”

“I’m so honored to be named among just two other artists that have represented the cowboy so authentically in country music. George Strait and Reba McEntire have been on the forefront of my mind as an artist as I have charted my path,” Paulette adds in awe. “They live what they sing, nothing can be more important to me than that, and now my name will be on a short list with theirs as partners for the Justin Brand. What a dream.“

Paulette arrived March 31 with her debut album The Girl I Was, which gained critical acclaim, with Billboard noting she’s a “worthy contender in a new crop of artists weaving their unique perspectives and backgrounds into their music.” A 2022 CMT Next Women of Country and March Apple Country Riser of the Month, Paulette reflects on heartbreak and redemption with a delivery that’s reminiscent of her greatest musical heroes – Gene Autry, The Chicks and Miranda Lambert among them.

About Jenna Paulette:
A CMT Next Women of Country in 2022 and Apple Music’s Country Riser of the Month for March, singer-songwriter Jenna Paulette — a cowgirl who came of age amid the gritty realities of ranch life — is part of Nashville’s growing wave of female artists who are rewriting the rules and charting their own paths. Her finely calibrated blend of toughness and sensitivity is on full display in tracks like “Country in the Girl” and “Pretty Ugly.” Her most recent single, "Anywhere the Wind Blows," gives a glimpse into Paulette's songwriting abilities and is a whimsical reflection on her mainstream presentation of western living. Paulette settled in Nashville in 2015, where she struck up a mentorship with Ashley Gorley – a veteran songwriter with 50+ No. 1 tunes under his belt – which ultimately led to her publishing deal with Sea Gayle Music in June 2021. Since collaborating with songwriters Will Bundy, Ashley McBryde, Rhett Akins and Jessie Jo Dillion, as well as opening for Mason Ramsey, Parmalee, John Michael Montgomery, Clay Walker and most recently Aaron Watson, Paulette has landed brand partnerships with Justin Boots, Boot Barn, Oak and Eden Whiskey and Ranch Water. Last year, Paulette continued to spotlight her authentic western lifestyle, performing the national anthem at the Professional Bull Riding World Finals; as well as day working on ranches across Texas, securing opening slots and performing in multiple festivals including CMA Fest. With her debut album, The Girl I Was, available now, Paulette continues building her audience as fans get a deeper look into who she is as an artist.

CLOAK announce Mexico tour dates

The blackened heavy metal band released their third album at the end of May, and it's already burning up the blogosphere. Metal Sucks put 'Black Flame Eternal' on top of their release roundup, while New Noise commended the album for bridging the gap between the spirituality of black metal and the abrasiveness of thrash, death metal and hard rock.

To celebrate, CLOAK have been bringing their torch-bearing black 'n' roll to stages along the East Coast, including Hell in the Harbor.

On Friday, June 10, the band will be searing hearts in their hometown of Atlanta for their record release show. Then, they'll be playing a string of piping-hot shows across the Southeast as they make their way toward the desert for Oblivion Access festival.

'Black Flame Eternal' is available on vinyl, CD and as a digital download through the Season of Mist store

“The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself.” - Rudyard Kipling

In an era that is designed to beat down and weaken the individual, Black Flame Eternal is an album that represents strength, empowerment, and total opposition. With mounting pressure to engage in modern societal tribalism, Cloak invokes a spiritual rebellion that exists beyond good and evil with album number three.

“All of our albums are created with a spiritual focus, dealing with how we see life, death, and everything in between. I think the earlier records dealt more with the mysteries that surrounded delving deeper into the world of dark spirituality, whereas the new material has taken what we’ve learned and used it to move forward with force,” says Cloak frontman Scott Taysom of the record’s underlying philosophy. “Black Flame Eternal is a statement of spiritual empowerment in every sense. For the first time we want people to grasp on to this sentiment, instead of keeping it completely personal within our world of Cloak. The themes and the sheer power can be felt much more within the songs that this album contains."

“Our goal is complete spiritual liberation, which is where true power and freedom exists,” he adds. “We’ve reached a point in history where people are forced to pick a side or to join a team, so to speak. Cloak stands in complete opposition to this. We aim to be a giant middle finger in the face of the empty modern world.”

While Cloak might rage against societal conventions, the Atlanta quartet embraces the rebellious and time-tested traditions of heavy metal. Whether it be the conjuring the chaotic spirit of Swedish black metal purveyors Watain and Dissection, summoning the deep, dark and sensual groove of Danzig, or evoking the raw speed and raucous energy of Motörhead, the influence of metal’s founding fathers is deep within Cloak’s DNA. Cloak’s charm, however, does not merely lie within its romanticism of the past, but rather is the way each of these genres has shaped Cloak’s own personal identity. And with Black Flame Eternal, the record sees Cloak continue to strengthen its own unique established sound.

Cloak recognizes the importance of a band’s third record, with Taysom explaining, “These influences will always be important to us, as they are some of the best and most important bands of our time. On the other hand, what is so special about getting to the third record of our career is that inspiration starts to move inwards. We had enough experience and material at this point to really know what we do best and how we can utilize these skills in the best way possible. If you look at some of the most iconic bands, their third albums were massive steps towards greatness. So to us, we feel our third record will be a very important one in our time as a band.”

The Atlantan’s evolution is evident in the fury displayed on Black Flame Eternal, which flawlessly compliments the grandiose melodic atmosphere. “This was a conscious effort. Early on before the album even started, I knew it was going to be a much more aggressive and powerful album. I wanted to take a step away from certain sounds and add a bit of brutality back in. The overall vibe matches who we are much more, so it was only fitting to move towards this sound. It almost feels like we are going back to our roots as people in certain ways,” explains Taysom.

Black Flame Eternal follows up sophomore effort The Burning Dawn, which was released in November 2019, with hell unleashing its fury on the globe just a few short months later. As plans to tour the new album around the world came to a screeching halt, the band did not stagger or falter, and instead used this gift of time to write. When reflecting upon the lost years and its impact, Taysom seemingly embraces the situation with little regrets, “Considering Cloak is a sacred space for us, these exterior things did not have as much of an impact as one might think. But it was impossible to ignore some of what was going on throughout these tumultuous years. It’s bound to affect people’s personal lives and the way the mind works during these interesting times. One thing that it did greatly affect was the fact that we could not promote The Burning Dawn properly after the one U.S. tour we did with 1349. We feel this hurt the record, but there was nothing we could do. We were one of the earliest out of the gate after venues started to open back up, and we’ve been continuing to tour in promotion of that album all the way up until now.”

Cloak utilized every minute of this time to focus on fully realizing its vision for Black Flame Eternal. “The initial stage of the writing process started in January of 2020, and lasted all the way until May 2021. It was the longest spanning album process for us so far, with many long days, nights, and weeks trying to piece the songs together the best we could.” While the record did not come together swiftly or easily, the care and attention put into its creation is evident in its powerful composition.

Making up for lost time, these road warriors have already embarked on several high profile North American tours since the autumn of 2021, commanding audiences in every major city with their chaos magick. Each performance merges the spirit of black metal with the backbone of rock ‘n’ roll as the band consistently delivers a blistering set from start to finish. Taysom describes Cloak’s live approach as “a mixture of ethereal atmosphere and total abrasive chaos. The mixture of these two opposing energies is where Cloak lies; the meeting of high and low. To us, this is where the most interesting moments happen, both emotionally and physically.”

With no borders or boundaries, Cloak is ready to embark on this new chapter as the leader of its own pack. The band bows to no one, forging its own path as one of the governing metal forces of this decade as ‘Black Flame Eternal’ promises to scorch the earth and leave its hallowed mark.

CYNIC's latest release Ascension Codes is a remarkably far-reaching work, and if nothing else, a clear indication that they have landed in a place of mastery. The album, paradoxically, acts as both swan song and rebirth.

'Ascension Codes' can be ordered at the
Season of Mist E-Shop, the CYNIC Bandcamp, and official CYNIC shop. The album can be streamed/downloaded HERE.

Attainment

Cynic’s continual state of development has met its share of challenges over the years, hurdles that threatened to dismantle the entity’s forward surge. Yet through hurricanes, breakups, and assorted acrimony both personal and existential, it remains inspired to create.

Their name is synonymous with what it means to be truly progressive in music. Cynic’s top-tier performance acumen and cerebral/spiritual/yogic themes finds them inhabiting a corner of the musical spectrum all their own. Their Venn diagram shows intersections with death metal, prog rock, thrash metal, experimental, new age, jazz fusion, and a myriad of other sonic expressions.

Debut album, Focus (1993), is a certified classic. Although that era ended with transformation into the short-lived Portal, and then a further splinter toward Aeon Spoke, Cynic’s reunion-era has found them embraced in a way that proves how ahead of the times they were in the ‘90s. Through monuments such as the Traced in Air (2008) and Kindly Bent to Free Us (2014) albums, the Carbon-Based Anatomy and Re-Traced EPs, and a surprising rebirth with the “Humanoid” single of 2018, the Cynic legacy remains untarnished. Yet early in the creation cycle for their fourth full-length album, they experienced horrible events that tested the entity’s resolve.

Ascension

The year 2020 will go down in history as a tremendously difficult time for the global human population. For the Cynic family, the struggle was not restricted to a pandemic. It was two utterly senseless losses that threw the band’s immediate concerns into the background: the premature deaths of drummer Sean Reinert in January, at age 48, and bassist Sean Malone in December, at age 50, were shocking and unthinkable.

Reinert, a founding Cynic member since formation in 1988, was highly influential to a multitude of young drummers. His work on 1993’s Focus and Death’s watershed 1991 album, Human, found him sculpting extreme technical metal with a jazz fusion-inspired approach. Now taken for granted, that approach to the instrument and the genre was undoubtedly pioneered in large part by Reinert. Though parting with Cynic in 2015, his imprint on Cynic is inescapable.

The death of Sean Malone dealt another horrible layer of tragedy to Cynic’s 2020. In his many years with the band, Malone’s virtuoso playing meshed intuitively with Reinert’s. Together they formed a nucleus of kinetic, highly capable rhythmic dexterity that fueled Cynic’s celestial aims.

One of these deaths would have seemed unimaginable by itself. Both of them, in the same year, nearly broke surviving member Paul Masvidal. But the seeds of a fourth Cynic full- length existed long before the deaths, and the guitarist, through a haze of grief and disbelief, pushed forward. “I wanted to make this record right after Kindly Bent to Free Us,” says Masvidal. “I was raring to go, hyper-creative, in this total flow state. And then it all imploded.”

Parts of songs were in the gestation process as early as 2014. Masvidal says that Reinert and Malone heard elements of what ended up on the fourth album. Slowly, methodically, and with much careful deliberation, Masvidal eventually completed an album titled Ascension Codes, to honor the memory of his fallen band mates. And while the album honors the lives and contributions of Reinert and Malone, it also pushes Cynic forward for its own sake and through its own will to live. The album, paradoxically, acts as both swan song and rebirth. It is, throughout its 49 minutes, a vivid and highly cosmic journey into the very core of every impulse this band has ever explored.

Offering

As of 2021, the future of Cynic is unclear. Does Ascension Codes mark their final phase of growth? Surely the music finds them laying out a most ambitious trail of spiritual sonic travel, but to call any Cynic album “ambitious” is redundant. They are, by their very nature, an ambitious band. Yet Ascension Codes is a remarkably far-reaching work. Its nine main songs are infused with explosions of color and energy, and throughout these compositions are embedded the “codes”: “Mu-54*,” “A’-va432,” “Ha-144” and so on.

Though clearly an album best listened to in its entirety without distraction, for full impact, there are definitive Cynic songs here that stand strong on their own. “Mythical Serpents” is imbued with propellant adventure, exciting peaks and valleys that tug at the heart while its mathematical sequences challenge the head in a dizzying push/pull dynamic. It’s that quintessential Cynic approach of kaleidoscopic intensity and mannered discipline.

“Diamond Light Body” brings the album to a crashing close – heavy and celestial, with some melodic sequences that feel like new territory for Cynic. An incredibly dense song with inhuman patterns from Lynch, the song’s beautiful urgency and final moments push the album outward into the heavens: “I won't feed the fear / I’ll choose a different timeline / Ascend / All is flux, nothing stands still / Ascend.”

The expanded Cynic collective maintains focus on Masvidal’s vision, each human element adding to the compelling overall result. Truly, if this is to be the final artistic stroke by Cynic, then they have landed in a place of mastery. The stories told by Focus, Traced in Air, and Kindly Bent to Free Us are now completed with Ascension Codes.

Ascension Codes is perhaps the most ethereal sounding Cynic album to date, but also skews heavier than previous album Kindly Bent to Free Us. The expanded lineup is surely responsible for the album’s far-reaching scope.

After Sean Reinert’s exit from Cynic in 2015, Masvidal and Malone recruited drummer Matt Lynch. Found through a tip from Between the Buried and Me’s Dan Briggs, Lynch proved to be a perfect addition to the band. As Masvidal notes, Lynch’s “hybrid modern style is like a fusion of drum and bass electronic music influences combined with modern jazz/prog approaches. Lynch is a true original in that he's a fully realized drummer constructing his parts as carefully as any other compositional element always is on a Cynic record. Every single accent and note coming from him is birthed from a precise and inspired place.” We hear this throughout Ascension Codes, pushing the music along with finesse, adding shape and texture in ways only the most sensitive drummers can do.

But how to replace Sean Malone on bass? Masvidal’s answer: don’t even try. The lines of bass notes heard throughout Ascension Codes are performed on bass synthesizer by keyboardist Dave Mackay. A British pianist, writer, producer and Moog/vintage synth enthusiast, Mackay has toured with everyone from Art Garfunkel to Plini (the latter providing the initial introduction between Mackay and Masvidal). Based in Los Angeles and London, Mackay’s work is sensitive to Malone’s touch, while also adding a throbbing intensity that offers Cynic new low-end possibilities. “He's got a vast jazz harmonic vocabulary,” notes Masvidal, “which is what's needed in the context of Cynic's music, especially for bass lines. I knew that I could never replace Malone. Anyone I would find would be expected to play like him, and that's not fair to another musician. And things were too fresh for me with the loss of Malone, so I had to go somewhere new. With Mackay, I heard his groovy left-hand approach, and how musical he was across the board having played with a variety of musicians and styles. I realized he would bring something fresh to the table, and he provided a space for me to start again with a completely different instrument and forgo any traditional ideas I had about what Cynic bass lines should sound like.

Ultimately Mackay delivered above and beyond, with a real awareness of a bass player's role in a progressive trio context. First, by holding down the harmony and being “in the pocket,” while also creating an independent and dynamic voice within that space. Mackay has a rare combination of skills and the vibe he locked into with Lynch with sounds like a rhythm section from the future. Plus, his Moog synth tone offers a low-end depth that’s never been heard in our recordings.” On December 5, 2019, Dave Mackay shared the stage with Paul Masvidal for a performance of the guitarist’s solo material. On bass that evening was Sean Malone. After the gig, Malone told Masvidal, “We should bring Mackay in for the new record.”

Michael Berberian, president and founder of Season of Mist Records remained close to Masvidal throughout the 2020 losses of his bandmates. Michael states “I have, by now, released close to one thousand albums. None have been more dramatic, none have even been more difficult than this one. I can’t listen to Ascension Codes without goosebumps, a mixed feeling of pride – because it’s a musical milestone, but it also contains a lingering layer of sadness. I hear Paul’s pain on this record. I can feel it, I can touch it. But it’s transcended. ‘Art is to console those who are broken by life,’ said Van Gogh. Here is a demonstration of that.”

Ascension Codes was mixed and co-produced by Warren Riker, who worked with Aeon Spoke, Cynic in the Traced in Air era, and mixed Paul Masvidal’s solo acoustic trilogy. “Riker’s a wizard who gets inside the music and commits. He expands boundaries as a mixer, always finding new ways to push the sonic envelope,” says Masvidal.

Keeping things in the family, Martina Hoffmann’s original painting entitled ‘The Landing’ graces Cynic's new album Ascension Codes with breathtaking scope and presence. The visionary work inspired by Martina's time walking the beaches of Brittany, France after the death of her longtime partner, the artist Robert Venosa (whose artwork adorns all Cynic releases between 1993 and 2018) followed by the loss of her mother, the subject of the piece features the arrival of a great mothership made of light and flesh, not machine but an organic entity that has brought hope and infinite possibilities. Masvidal says of Hoffmann, “Martina’s art has always held a special place in my heart, and I'm deeply grateful for her love and support. When I first contacted Venosa as a teenager, it was Martina who encouraged him to lend his work to the band, because she heard something in our music. She is like the divine mother in this Cynic/ Venosa lineage," Masvidal says. "Her spirit and multidimensional talents are truly a gift to this world. I feel that she is one of the great artistic voices of our age."

The struggle to attain ascension is as important as ascension itself. And after much searching, Cynic have again achieved oneness with the numinous. At a time of possible exit for the entity, Ascension Codes is Cynic reaching a previously-unknown state of enlightenment.
