High On Fire drops video for title track of new LP 'Cometh The Storm'

Iconic U.S. rock band, High on Fire, will release its new LP, 'Cometh the Storm,' on April 19 via MNRK Heavy. The GRAMMY Award-winning group, celebrating its 25th anniversary, recorded 'Cometh the Storm' at GodCity Studio in Salem, Massachusetts with producer Kurt Ballou. The 11-song effort -- the band's ninth studio album -- marks the release of the first new High on Fire music since 2018's 'Electric Messiah' and the first to feature drummer  Coady Willis (Big Business, Murder City Devils), alongside bassist Jeff Matz, and guitarist/vocalist Matt Pike. 'Cometh the Storm' boasts runic art and design by longtime High on Fire collaborator Arik Moonhawk Roper.

Now, High on Fire drops a music video for the new album's title track, directed by Phil Mucci for Diabolik Films.

"Cometh the Storm" was built from a riff I started playing on bass at practice," explains bassist/guitarist Jeff Matz . "I was noodling around with this melancholic harmonic minor line, just hammering the notes with my left hand, when Matt yelled out “Are we recording this!?” The chorus riff was something Coady and I came up with when we were jamming in LA. Matt then came in and worked up some rough lyrics and came up with the vocal line. For the chorus, I used this fretless bass I’d acquired. The weight of the low frequencies this thing produced was insane—how it blended with the guitars and drums, it was like being hit with a sledgehammer. We knew right away that this was going to be an epically heavy track."

“This was the first time I got to work with the guys on set and we had a blast,” offers Mucci. High on Fire lyrics can always be interpreted in a number of ways, so I started by trying to define “The Storm”. A huge list of visual ideas got whittled down to the two essential characters at work, The Man and Gaia, representing duel ends of the spectrum — with a very destructive cross-over. I always try to keep things light and encourage everyone to come with ideas — like Coady’s burning cymbal idea! No better way to end your High on Fire shoot than with exploding cymbals!”

High on Fire will kick off U.S. headlining tour dates in support of 'Cometh the Storm on May 4 in Orlando, FL. The jaunt will feature support from Venezuelan post rock outfit, Zeta, and Massachusetts crossover crew High Command.

Tim Montana Announces New Album "Savage" + Shares Title Track

Rock singer/guitarist/songwriter TIM MONTANA is thrilled to announce Savage, his debut rock album, out July 12. Pre-order it here.

On Savage, Montana gets in touch with his undeniable rock 'n' roll roots. Armed with grit, guitars, and a hunger for glory, Montana has been endorsed by Dave Grohl and ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons, booked by David Letterman, and had his anthems used by the MLB and NHL. His moody, crackling, '90s-influenced riffs and whiskey-soaked vocals reel fans in while his storytelling keeps them. Savage is a custom and combustible cocktail, served in a dirty, cracked glass that proves why Montana earned iHeartRadio's "On The Verge" accolade.

"'Savage' is a window into my world and what I was inspired by over the course of writing and recording this album," Montana shares. "If there is a keystone or a decoder ring to the themes of these songs, 'Savage' is it. It's best enjoyed extremely loud."


With the new single, Montana comes out of the gates swinging. The blustery song is erected on a hellacious riff, push 'n' pull percussive tension, husky, smoky vocals, and the repeated battle cry that "Everything can go to hell...Everything is savage." Montana is no longer knocking on rock music's door. He's kicked it open and has waltzed right in.

Tim Montana forges a new frontier for hard rock. Following a tumultuous and downright unbelievable childhood in a trailer off-the-grid, the singer, guitarist, and entrepreneur left his home state of Montana in the rearview at barely eighteen-years-old. Driven by a restless work ethic, he quietly carved out a niche without comparison. Innovative instrumental metal powerhouse intervals have dropped their new track "nootropic" and the official visualizer today. Fans attending recent intervals shows got a special sneak peek of the song, which can be found on the band's upcoming new album 'memory palace' set for release on Friday, May 17. When asked about the inspiration behind today's release, intervals mastermind Aaron Marshall shared:

“'nootropic' is the first tune that came out of the brain/hands when I started writing for the new record, and I’m super stoked to roll this one out! We’ve been playing it on tour over the past month and it’s been getting a really strong pop live, so I can’t wait for everyone to hear the recorded version. With this being the third single out from 'memory palace', this should give everyone an idea of the range of sounds happening on the record!”

The progressive guitar rock faithful revere Marshall for his virtuoso chops and melodic prowess in equal measure. The music is a window into the Toronto, Ontario, guitarist’s mind, body, and soul. New Orleans dark duo The Palace of Tears presents their sophomore album 'Veiled Screen, Woven Dream', a hauntingly beautiful, ghostly and sensual experience.

This fan-funded seven-track album represents “the transformational fires of the Phoenix archetype and the cyclic nature of death and rebirth”. A transmission of aural experiences and transmutational frequencies, it is previewed by the bewitching single 'The Embers of Your Being Glow Still' and spectacular video for the title track.

The Palace of Tears is Leah Kahn aka LV Darkling (vocalist, lyricist) and Erick r Scheid (guitars, electronics, engineering), who met in Germany in 2018 when Erick was performing with his band Mercurys Antennae at the world-renowned WGT Festival. After a collaborative exercise in co-writing long distance, the duo released their debut album 'Of Ruination' in 2020 with Erick also moving from the Bay Area to join LV in New Orleans.

Delving into hidden truths and secrets, pain and grief from personal loss, and the soul's journey, 'Veiled Screen, Woven Dream' is informed by personal experiences and tragedy, including an unforeseen and agonizing turning point in its creation. This record is an exploration of your shadow-self and entering the realm of darkness and the unconscious and subconscious, which lay just beyond our conscious awareness. The lyrics incite contemplation of the soul’s journey as it departs from this mortal coil, beholding that mystery of the veil between the seen and unseen worlds.

"This album is dedicated to my brother, best friend and soulmate Kirk, who left this Earthly realm last October. I would be remiss to not mention my own recent personal loss, as I would be denying and omitting the special place that it holds in the journey of the making of this album. I truly have never known grief until now. There are songs on this album that remain difficult for me to listen to, let alone actually perform and sing, as I usually end up in tears," says LV Darkling.

"As vulnerable as it is to share some of this here, I am propelled by the deep spiritual connection that he and I held throughout our lives. He is inherently a part of this work, perhaps collaborating with us from beyond. I hope that by channeling this and honoring those we love, it can provide a healing catalyst and human connection can be unearthed."

With somber beauty and otherworldly seduction, The Palace of Tears fuses hypnotic electronics, heavily layered processed guitars and operatic contralto vocals that captivate, creating an ethereal sonic amalgam that transcends temporal boundaries. Their unique alchemy blends elements of ethereal wave, gothic rock, shoegaze, dark ambient and electronica, encapsulated within a lush cinematic soundscape.

No stranger to the world of performance, New Orleans native LV Darkling is a classically-trained dancer and vocalist, who brings a varied and textured approach to her singing and songwriting, pulling from her many disciplines in the performing arts.

Erick r Scheid is best known for his band Mercurys Antennae (Projekt Records), who released 3 albums and 2 EPs, as well as performing at Whitby Goth Festival, All Tomorrows Ghosts and WGT Festival. A self-taught recording engineer, Erick has been writing and producing music since 1989, and has also composed film soundtracks, performed and written scores as a live musician for dance performances, touring extensively throughout the US.

Having toured the USA, The Palace of Tears has shared the stage with artists such as Kaelan Mikla, Pink Turns Blue, AL1CE, Solar Fake, Rosegarden Funeral Party, The Veldt, Slow Crush, Dead Leaf Echo, Pilgrims of Yearning, Astari Nite, The Waning Moon and The Neuro Farm, in addition to performing at Dark City Festival (New Orleans) and Dark Castle Festival (Louisville).

As of April 8, the 'Veiled Screen, Woven Dream' album is available on CD, limited edition vinyl and digitally directly from the artist via Bandcamp.

Black Tusk Premiere New Single

Black Tusk are debuting their new single "Breath of Life" with Decibel Magazine. The video was produced by Alexandra Petrovich. "Breath of Life" comes ahead of the band's new album, The Way Forward, which is out April 26 on Season of Mist. 

"'Breath of Life' was a fun one to work on", says Chris "Scary" Adams. In addition to playing guitar and contributing vocals, Scary also produced and mixed The Way Forward at his studio Hidden Audio. "There were a few iterations as we were riffing alone, but once we all got together it really took shape. That's my favorite part about writing collaboratively. It really does come to life when everyone contributes".   

"'Breath of Life' is a bludgeoning track that showcases the new versatility of having a second guitarist", says bassist and vocalist Derek Lynch, who makes his debut as a member of Black Tusk on The Way Forward. "We decided to bookend the chaos with some experimental synth parts that I feel set the tone for what's to come".

“The big theme of this record is putting your life back together.” That’s Black Tusk guitarist/vocalist Andrew Fidler talking about the band’s new album, The Way Forward. “When everything seems like it’s against you, put your head down and push through. Take those bad things that are happening and use them to help create.” 

The Way Forward might be the Savannah swamp metal crew’s seventh album, but it marks many firsts for Black Tusk. It’s their first with their new lineup, which sees guitarist Chris “Scary” Adams and bassist Derek Lynch joining Fidler and drummer James May. Which also makes it Black Tusk’s first record with a two-guitar lineup. “We were able to add leads and harmonies and all kinds of stuff on the new record that we haven’t done in the past,” Fidler says. “As far as our records go, this one has the most guitar work.”  

You can hear it in the squealing solo of “Dance on Your Grave,” the killer harmonies on ripper “Harness (The Alchemist),” and the glorious dual guitar interplay of the powerful title track.  

“‘The Way Forward’ is my favorite song on the record,” Fidler says. “It’s based on a personal experience that everyone can probably relate to. I got divorced in 2020, and I kinda felt like my entire world was collapsing when that happened. But I pulled myself out of it. I realized that this one thing ending in my life isn’t the end of everything. I’m gonna find a way forward. I’m gonna figure out how to live my life and create and be happy and make new relationships. Which is what I’ve done.”  

In true Black Tusk fashion, the new lineup has expanded their triple-vocal approach to quadruple. “Everyone is doing vocals,” Fidler says. “That’s always been a thing in Black Tusk. Derek said he’d never done heavy vocals before, so I was like, ‘Well, here’s the mic. Here’s some words. Yell at it and see if you like it.’ I was blown away the first time he did it. It sounded good as fuck.”   

That’s Lynch on lead single “Brushfire,” a song for which he wrote the main riffs and lyrical concept. “That was my first real contribution to the band,” the bassist says. “Thematically, I wanted the aggressiveness of the lyrics to keep with the idea of pushing forward even when the world is trying to drag you down. The mood of the lyrics needed to match the pulverizing tempo of the song.”  

The lyrics for second single “Dance on Your Grave” were written by May, who moved from Savannah to Athens, GA, in the time since Black Tusk’s last album. “It’s about his struggles through Covid and what this lifestyle can do to people,” Fidler says. “It’s about getting past the party lifestyle and continuing to do things that are creative.”  

Meanwhile, “Breath of Life” distills Black Tusk’s lyrical philosophy into a righteous five-minute pummeling. “Scary came up with the main riff of this song, and it’s one of my favorite riffs on the record,” Fidler says. “I wrote the lyrics, and it’s just about darkness crushing everything. The world is a fucked-up place that we have to navigate through. That’s what a lot of Black Tusk songs are about.”  

Black Tusk recorded The Way Forward at Adams’ own Hidden Audio studio just outside of Savannah. Adams engineered the album and the whole band produced. “I actually helped him build the studio in the detached garage next to his house,” Fidler explains. “Me and my carpentry company went out there to do it, and Scary helped.”  

“We had about 90% of the riffs and song structures going into the studio, while still experimenting with ideas and inspirations,” Adams explains. “Sometimes we completely reworked parts, which made all the difference. For example, early versions of ‘Breath of Life’ and ‘The Way Forward’ are quite different than the record, and I love where they ended up. Though we did use a few effects and synths here and there for texture and space, to me this record still feels raw and powerful. It captures the feeling of being at a Black Tusk show.”  

The cover art for The Way Forward was done by Brian Mercer, who also created the sleeve for Black Tusk’s 2018 album, T.C.B.T.“T.C.B.T. had a dark cover because it was a dark time for the band,” Fidler says, referring to the period immediately after the passing of their longtime friend and bassist Jonathan Athon. “This time, it’s full blown, full-color Black Tusk. Brian Mercer and James collaborated on the concept, and Brian really knocked it out of the park.”  

“The title is kind of a double play,” Fidler says. “It’s the first record with the new lineup, and this is the direction we’re taking the band in. We’ve been doing Black Tusk for 19 years now, and we still love it. That’s why we called it The Way Forward.”

New Orleans-based alternative folk-rock artist Fred Abong presents 'Heaven', the first taste of his new 'Blindness' album, to be released on May 9 via Moochin' About Records. While most famously associated with the bass guitar, Abong wrote this material for this album on the piano, effectively opening up a new compositional and emotional space for him.

His eighth long-player to date, Abong is no stranger to the US alternative music realm, having got his musical start in the 1980’s on the Rhode Island hardcore punk scene. In the early 1990s, he played bass for Throwing Muses and then Belly. Putting music on hold for academic pursuits, he then earned a PhD in Humanities and taught at various universities for eight years before returning to music. Now back as a solo artist, Abong also plays bass in the Kristin Hersh Electric Trio.

“Heaven is probably the most straightforward song on 'Blindness'. It's kind of an anthemic rock ballad, delivered in my own understated version of theatricality and drama. There's maybe even a touch of Broadway in there, much to my embarrassment … but there you have it. Lyrically, it's pretty downbeat, but what else is new? I am, always have been, and always will be a seeker after something truer and more ideal than what I find in the social and cultural sphere," says Fred Abong.

"Heaven is just one of many musical snapshots of an ongoing struggle to find or create an earthly paradise for myself and my loved ones and the disappointment and growing exhaustion of coming up empty again (and again). To be clear, Heaven is not an ode to the afterlife … it's more prophetic and atemporal, about finding eternity here and now rather than in an imagined future.”

This first single introduces one of the album's primary themes - salvation. In some sense, it's the album's only theme. Where and how is heaven found? Through some kind of spiritual awakening or realization of the ephemerality and impermanence of material life? In mystical union with the beloved? By living in the moment? By freeing oneself from the strictures of 'straight life' and going off the grid? By being blind to present reality and living in the glory days of the past? Or maybe there's only ever momentary salvation, such as experienced when being kissed? What about suicide? All of these questions and more are explored here… but hopefully temporarily resolved when set to music, which “hath charms to soothe the savage beast' in all of us.

A Filipino-American singer-songwriter, Abong's music has a raw and unpolished production aesthetic with an overall direct, though deceptively imaginative and oblique, presentation. Abong has also been a practicing Vedic astrologer for the past 20 plus years.

Between the bookends of the new 'Blindness' album and 'Homeless', the first set of songs as a solo artist, originally self-released in 2018, Abong has released several critically acclaimed records, including his self-recorded 2023 'Fear Pageant' and earlier albums 'Yellowthroat', 'Pulsing' and 'Our Mother of Perpetual Help'.

As of April 9, 'Heaven' is available everywhere digitally, including Apple Music, Spotify and Bandcamp. On May 9, the full 'Blindness' album will be released on CD, along with his 'Homeless' album, both of which can be pre-ordered via the label's Bandcamp.

Brooklyn electro-rapper Aly G presents the video for her latest single ‘Super Power’, telling personal stories of fighting off muggers and sexual assaulters with a feistiness that might be unexpected. Driving home the point that being a woman is inherently a super power in itself, it asserts that the ability to give birth and sustain another life is so badass, that women can be as fierce as needed in any situation.

Filmed in the Iron Triangle in Queens, NY, this video was produced by Grammy nominated producer Baby Paul Hendricks (Nas, Kanye West, Monie Love, J Dilla) and shot by Chardon Whitehurst, Executive Producer for 'The Punchline Academy' on Eminem's Sirius XM Hip Hop Channel: Shade 45.

Aly G is the neon hip-hop doppelganger of musician, producer, choreographer and songwriter Alyson Greenfield, whose catchy yet conscious electro-rap exalts women’s various powers, which exhibit themselves both in expected and quite surprising ways. Spitting rapid-fire rhymes with equal parts fun, feminism and fierceness, slaying the mic with quirky, clever raps about gentrification, misogyny and empowerment.

Greenfield is also half of POLYVOX, a duo with Joe McGinty (Psychedelic Furs), creator and curator of NYC’s famed Loser’s Lounge. Earning praise from NYC's The Deli, Greenfield was one of the first five artists chosen to record at Converse’s Rubber Tracks studio in Brooklyn.

"I had this vision of being in a ballet outfit among autobody junkyards. The ballet costume displays a very feminine aesthetic, which could also represent the type of girl that one might assume doesn't have fight in her. Of course, actual ballerinas are incredibly strong, but the whole idea is that many times people discount anything that has to do with being a woman or being feminine. I wanted to show that both can be true," says Aly G.

"You can be feminine and a badass. You can have the ability to move gracefully and also fight back when you need to. I wanted this feisty feminine character in autobody junkyards with huge, heavy metal scraps, and steel beams to show that she is not scared of places that are traditionally dominated by men and that might be deemed as 'unsafe' because of the machinery and work that is done there.  I hope both the song and the video help get the main message across that one should never assume anything about a woman just because she is a woman."

This single follows Aly G’s debut single 'Build It Up', which claps back at the urban renewal trend and increasing gentrification in Brooklyn, showcasing her socially conscious NYC vibe, whip-smart vocab, sly comedic observances and rapid-fire delivery.

An Ohio native, Alyson started freestyling while at college in Wisconsin, the rhymes spontaneously popping into her head. With her MFA in creative writing, she moved to NYC and built up a following as a singer-songwriter until one night at a hip hop club, a spark ignited that birthed the artist, who evolved into Aly G. Incorporating beatboxing into her performances, along with covers of her fave 90s rap classics, she gained attention from The New Yorker and HuffPost for her innovative genre-blending and high energy performances. Ian Munsick Releases Deluxe Album ‘White Buffalo: Introduce You To God’

Wyoming native Ian Munsick spread the Rocky Mountain gospel with his sophomore album White Buffalo through spiritual lyrics celebrating the wild landscape of the West. Now, Munsick is passing the torch to the next generation, intertwining his lessons of faith to his son, accompanied by a strong connection with the outdoors, on the deluxe version, White Buffalo: Introduce You To God, out now.
 
Timed to the one-year anniversary of White Buffalo, Introduce You To God is produced by Munsick and Jeremy Spillman and features five new songs, including the title track, which invites his son and listeners to join him as he introduces them to God through His greatest creation: nature. It’s this interconnection between his longing for the land and its inspiration on his lyrics that left The New Yorker proclaiming in a recent feature, “Ian Munsick puts the western back in country.”

OCEANHOARSE Unleashes "Killer & the Queen" Music Video and Reveals New Band Line-Up!

After a brief hiatus, Finnish heavy metal band OCEANHOARSE has returned, more powerful than ever, unveiling a fresh music video and a renewed band lineup! With a surge of new energy, a redefined sound, and a fresh perspective, the Heavy Metal quartet is excited to reveal the musical concoction they've been brewing in secrecy over the past year. Today marks the debut of their new single "Killer & the Queen" and the official introduction of bassist Silver Ots.

“There was a lot of inner turmoil within the band around the release of our previous album 'Heads Will Roll', which escalated with the exit of bassist Jyri Helko”, guitarist Ben Varon explains. “I was also running pretty low motivation-wise, and needed a few months to take a breather and find the excitement for the music again. But it was soon clear to me, Joonas (Kosonen, vocals) and Oce (Oskari Niemi, drums) that we wanted to continue the band and still make music together. And I knew just the right guy to call for bass duties.”

Enter Silver Ots, Ben's old partner in crime from his previous band Amoral.

“Silver and me go way back, I believe we were 15 when we formed Amoral. I have always regarded him as one of the best riff composers in metal, so I knew the value that he would bring to the band with his songwriting in addition to his ridiculously tight bass playing. And the proof is in the pudding, all you need to do is to listen to 'Killer & The Queen', for which Silver composed the music for!”, Ben continues.

“I met the guys at a crossroads”, says Silver Ots. “After the band going full speed for so long there was a wind of change in the air. We decided to take the time, reflect back and look ahead, find a mutual vibe and see what we can come up with together. What you hear now is one of the pieces of new music we've been cooking up this past year.”

“'Killer & the Queen' showcases the more groovy side of the 'Hoarse”, says vocalist Joonas Kosonen. “Lyrically, the song is about those enemies very close to you. So close you can’t even see them coming. We’re super proud of this one, and we feel reborn after going through hellfire. A bit of dissonance sure makes art come alive!”, Joonas summarizes.

"Killer & The Queen" was mixed and mastered by Lauri Hämäläinen, who also co-produced and recorded the vocals. For the video, OCEANHOARSE returned to Guilty Visuals and Pete Inkinen, who they had worked with previously on the video for “Pryopen”. The cover artwork for the single was drawn by Samuli “Skrymer” Ponsimaa.

KORPIKLAANI | release video for title track of new album 'Rankarumpu' which is out NOW

Today, Finnish folk metal superstars KORPIKLAANI, the cultural ambassadors for Finland, are celebrating the release of their new studio album, Rankarumpu. This marks the 12th full-length entry in their impressive discography. Alongside, a video for the album's title track has been unveiled today and can be watched below! Meanwhile, KORPIKLAANI are getting ready to embark on an extensive North American tour which will kick off next week. Scroll to the bottom for all dates!

KORPIKLAANI's twelfth studio album is once again classic folk metal, fast, energetic and dynamic, showing once again they are leaders in this genre. One of the most wonderful features of Rankarumpu is related to the folk instruments. Although KORPIKLAANI has done one or maybe even a couple of unforgettable things in the realm of folk metal, this time new permanent member Olli Vänskä's (ex Turisas) violin and Sami Perttula's accordion may surprise even die-hard fans. Rankarumpu was again produced by Janne Saksa and recorded at his Sound Supreme Studio and Korpiklaani’s HQ, Miehola Studios.

Singer Jonne commented:
"Rankarumpu is our fastest album, which was easy and fun to make. However, in contrast to the fun, the war theme rears its head here and there on the album because the world situation is so completely absurd and twisted at the moment. Violinist Olli Vänskä joined this album as a new member, while Tuomas Rounakari focused on his solo production. Olli was Tuomas’s deputy many times over the years when he was busy, so he was the only right choice as a member. He participated in the arrangements but also composed for this album. The song and video for Rankarumpu perfectly sums up what this band represents at its best, which is having fun together with our audience. This will even make the purists get dancing!"
