SUFFOCATION took about a month and a half to record Hymns from the Apocrypha. They holed up at Hobbs and Boyer's InLine Studio in Long Island. The duo engineered and co-produced with Christian Donaldson (BENEATH THE MASSACRE, INGESTED), who was also re-enlisted to mix and master, with Dominic Grimard (CRYPTOPSY, SHADOW OF INTENT) assisting. With stunning cover art by Greek illustrator Giannis Nakos of Remedy Art Design (VOMITORY, THE CROWN), Hymns from the Apocrypha is characteristically SUFFOCATION. It's uncompromisingly brutal, artistically gutsy, and aurally heavy. Clearly, SUFFOCATION, as they head into their 35th Anniversary, are at the peak of their potential. Death metal or die!

It was at this poignant juncture that COLOSSAL STREET JAM was born.

Having a deep & mutual admiration for one another, as well as having tremendous respect for their many, and diverse collective influences, who helped shape their gritty, melodic, psychedelically tinged hard rock stylings, each member truly brings their own individuality, and nuance to the mix.

An eclectic potpourri for the senses, CSJ ultimately, and seamlessly fuse their independent ideas to deliver a singular vision & signature sound that can easily be coined as “New Classic Rock” for the ages.

With their roots firmly planted and their musical heritage tightly in place, CSJ has long been an integral part the legendary Asbury Park, NJ music scene.

In 2016, the band’s release, Living Free, was met with critical acclaim and worldwide press. The albums single, “Songbird” received extensive radio airplay both locally, and globally.

It subsequently remained on the Indie charts, Down Under, for 6 months.

Later that year, in November of 2018, CSJ released their follow up album, Just Take Hold…

Once again, they were greeted with extensive Indie and College radio airplay for that record’s namesake single, “Just Take Hold”, as well as for their cover version of the Sugarloaf classic, “Green Eyed Lady”.

In May and December of 2019, CSJ completed two successful European tours, which journeyed them throughout The Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany.

As the world paused for the next couple years, due to the global pandemic, CSJ was still hard at work on their next creative endeavor.

In 2021, they released a new single, “No Way To Live”…

Just as before, they garnered massive airplay, both locally and overseas.

On March 1st, 2023, the long-awaited full length, 11- song album, which was on hold, due to the state of the world was finally released.

Michael Franti & Spearhead Deliver 'Big Big Love' Ahead of Sold Out Soulshine at Sea Cruise

Dubbed by American Songwriter as “an energizing batch of songs that spotlight the common threads that connect us,” Michael Franti & Spearhead release their 13th studio album Big Big Love, available everywhere now. With all 17 tracks cowritten by Franti, Big Big Love reflects his tenacity, inclusiveness and optimism, despite both his own losses and worldwide hardships over the last few years.
 
“Togetherness is the central theme in all the songs on this record,” shares Franti. “How do we get that feeling of togetherness, that feeling of closeness, that we so often overlooked and took for granted, but now has become so important? Not only just in terms of how we interact with each other in our neighborhoods or our personal relationships, but on a worldwide scale. How do we bridge these gaps so that people can feel close to one another again?
 
“There are forces in the world that use our division to achieve their greedy goals, their political aims, or just to divide people because they want to try to take advantage of it,” he elaborates. “I want to really use my music and my time in my life to bring closeness to people and help them feel like they’re not alone in this world.”
 
With a stirring video accompaniment, “Hands Up To The Sky” quickly became a fan-favorite during live shows. Written by Franti, Greg Hvnsen and Daniel Lubwama Kigozi, the uplifting track permits listeners to make space in their minds and hearts by letting go of emotions and allow room for the joy that follows once on the other side.
 
“Writing ‘Hands Up’ was an important part of my healing journey and putting together the video was cathartic,” reveals Franti. “I lost my father to COVID and after several months of grieving, I saw live music again for the first time – a Balinese band called The Munchies. At one point, I closed my eyes and put my hands up to the sky. My whole body started trembling, tears started coming down my cheeks, and I was laughing and crying and dancing and singing and shouting and just feeling everything over the previous few years rise up and out.
 
“I needed the music to help me open all the parts of my soul that were blocked due to just trying to figure out how to get through life each day. It was a reminder to me of how important music is, as it also brought that feeling of togetherness that I missed so much during the pandemic. That feeling of just being around other people watching a band play and experiencing that together.”
 
Franti & Spearhead embarked on their Big Big Love Tour earlier this year with 60+ dates and 20+ sold out shows with iconic stops at Red Rocks Amphitheater, Summerstage in Central Park and the Greek Theatre followed by festival plays this fall at Oceans Calling and Farm-to-Fork Festival.

Drake Milligan Releases Fan-Demanded “I Got A Problem (Full Length)”

Stoney Creek Records recording artist DRAKE MILLIGAN is giving fans what they crave, releasing the full length, original version of his current single following a captivating return to America’s Got Talent. The newly recorded “I Got A Problem (Full Length)” is out today (11/3).

With a rich, warm vocal and a sound tipping its hat to neon-lit ‘90s romance, the track remains a heartfelt tribute to an all-consuming love – but now comes with an added layer of refinement. 

Featuring a new piano intro to showcase the effortless ease of Milligan’s beyond-his-years baritone, “I Got A Problem (Full Length)” captures the track just like the rising star performed it as an America’s Got Talent guest in September – returning to the scene of his national-TV breakout last season.

The wait is over and SPIRITBOX, have released their highly anticipated new EP ‘The Fear of Fear' (out now via Rise Records/Pale Chord). In celebration of the release the band have initiated a 3-part video premiere event, releasing the official music videos for the 3 brand new tracks on the album. The event beings now with the release of the music video for "Ultraviolet". Tomorrow - Friday, November 3rd, the band will premiere the music video for "Angel Eyes" and on Saturday, November 4th, at 12pm PT they will premiere the official music video for "Too Close/Too Late".

Buffalo quartet Until I Wake — vocalist Cody Johnson, bassist Ryan Ridley, guitarist August Geitner, and drummer Alex Curtin — have released the deluxe edition of their debut album Inside My Head today via Fearless Records. Get it here.

WINTERHORDE, the Progressive Extreme Metal group hailing from Northern Israel, has announced the release of its highly anticipated fourth studio album, Neptunian, due out December 8 via Noble Demon. In preparation for this monumental release, the band has unveiled the first single "The Spirit of Freedom", which showcases the band's unique blend of enchanting tenderness and brutal intensity. 2023 is proving to be a year of milestones for Willie, who recorded two new studio albums for Legacy: I Don't Know a Thing About Love (Willie's musical tribute to legendary American songwriter Harlan Howard, released in March) and Bluegrass (Willie performing 12 of his favorite self-penned classics with a bluegrass ensemble). The 38th Annual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place Friday, November 3, at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, and will stream live on Disney+ at 8pm ET. EXOCRINE release first single 'Legend'

EXOCRINE have been blending ultra technical and extraordinarily rapid death metal with philosophical musings for quite some time now. The French band released their first album back in 2015. But their new album marks a new chapter. While still choked-full of eerie, dissonant finger-taps and enough blast beats to blow out your eardrums, 'Legend' rages from within.

"We see 'Legend' as a reflection of our existence, of what we create, and what we wish to leave of ourselves in the end", says lead guitarist Sylvain Octor Perez. "It's this Dante-like confrontation between these three characters in complete opposition, combined with questions about the lessons of the past and our place in the universe.That's why we wanted to create a more intimate atmosphere with a more organic production, and return to calmer tempos at times."

Today, Exocrine are releasing the chilling video for the album's title track.

"Legend is a new chapter for Exocrine and we're eager to introduce you to it. It's probably the album we're most proud of, it's also our most personal one", says Sylvain. "It's a more 'airy' album, allowing the cinematic side of our music to express itself more fully. NYC indie surf rock instrumental artist Guitarmy of One presents his new video 'Soylent Seafoam Green', filmed in Paris, Whitby, UK and New York State. This is the latest offering from his new spy-themed album ‘The Wave Files’, influenced by surf guitar, punk and metal. This adventurous 10-track album, crowdfunded earlier this year via Kickstarter, is a driving fun mix of dark ominous riffs, guitar swells and foreboding reverb-drenched melodies.

Guitarmy of One is the solo project of guitarist Scott Helland, an ex-hardcore punk bass player turned instrumental songwriter, whose first band (Deep Wound) was formed with alt-rock trailblazers J Mascis and Lou Barlow (Dinosaur Jr). He later joined hardcore/ crossover thrash stalwarts Outpatients, School of Violence and Darkside NYC before ultimately forming post-punk duo Frenchy and the Punk in 2005.

Soylent Seafoam Green' was inspired by the 1973 sci-fi dystopian cult thriller 'Soylent Green', which takes place in the future in New York, which is dealing with the effects of overpopulation, depleted resources and dying oceans. In the film, a mysterious food source is being given to people and the detective wants to find out what it actually is.

"I continue with my own campy spy and detective role in this new video. The song mixes dark ominous guitar riffing with surf guitar swells and foreboding reverb drenched melodies. It’s surf rock with a gothic edge," says Scott Helland.  

"The videos are a totally DIY series, where I film and edit these shorts to bring the visual element to my surf spy rock instrumentals. It completes the 'movie in your head' aspect of the music. As a kid, I wanted to be an actor before discovering music and following that path. Now I get to do both!"

This video follows the latest one for 'Kolchak Meets The Sea Mobster', which was inspired by the 70s thriller detective show 'Kolchak the Night Stalker', and ‘Top Secret Agent Man on a Wire Tapped Phone at Sea’, the first taste of 'The Wave Files' LP.

The album involves coded intrigue, each song blatantly and not so blatantly containing the word ‘sea’ in the lyrics. This record's concept is rooted in spy and detective shows from the 60s, 70s and 80s - like the sonic equivalent of those shows, riding the waves of intrigue and espionage. For instance 'Hawaii 5-0' inspired 'Jack Lord of the Sea' and the tv show 'The Saint' spawned 'Seance for the Saint'. Even real life mobsters like Legs Diamond inspired the song 'Sea Legs Diamond'.

Following his 'The Spy Detective Collective’ LP, this album combines the thrilling sounds of spy-themed instrumental surf guitar music with punk vitality. Guitarmy of One creates a sonic adventure to the realms of intrigue, danger and surf-soaked excitement with Helland channeling that raw and unconventional spirit into a quirky fusion of genres.

"I wanted this album to be music you want to travel with - in your mind or physically. It’s action music, and I think it should ignite your imagination and take you on a journey. Wordless music relies on the visuals it creates so if it can take you on a sonic adventure across continents, or at least counties, my work is done," says Scott Helland.

Guitarmy of One conjures up images of secret agents, high-speed chases, and hidden agendas through his intricate layered compositions. His mix of surf guitar techniques (i.e. reverb-drenched chords, lightning-fast tremolo picking, and tremolo bar vibrato albeit with a Bigsby bridge pedal) creates a sonic landscape that is both nostalgic and forward-thinking.

'The Wave Files' is out now and available across digital platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music and Bandcamp, where the full album can also be ordered on CD.

Fuzzed-up and psychedelic guitars are balanced perfectly alongside a touch of electronica with beats and synth to the fore, paving the way for Jody's soaring vocals, supported by new Jerm Salma Craig and drummer Steve Clark on harmonies.

Recorded in August at Safehouse Studios in their hometown of Oxford, this catchy earworm is the final release of 2023. A prolific year for the band, they've played 50 shows across the UK, released their latest 'Wonder' album (April 2023), and enjoyed significant press and radio attention across the globe, including airplay on BBC 6 Music, Absolute Radio, Sirius XM and much coveted praise from Rolling Stone.

"What with all this talk of AI in music, we bucked the trend with a happy accident when we woke up one morning after playing a festival. All our guitars were locked in the van, so Pete (guitar) said we don't need instruments to write, and started humming the main riff. Steve (drums) happened to record it on his phone, then we drank coffee, got back in the van, drank something stronger and forgot about it for six weeks. Then I asked for the recording and Jody and I turned it into Divine one productive afternoon," says Niall Jeger.

"It's got a different grove than most of our other tunes, with more electronica and heavy guitars, but it is very much us. Salma and Steve stepped up with some strong backing vocals and harmonies to really give 'Divine' power."

As the lyrics go: "Hearts can break is what they say, abandoned dreams don't fade away. I believe you're heaven sent, my divine experiment".

Jody Jeger adds, "There is so much heartbreak in the World right now that I wanted to write something affirming about love and believing in finding it against the odds."

'Divine' arrives hot on the trail of 'Seen It All Before', an upbeat bitter-sweet tale of mistakes and consequences, inspired by lifelong friendships. Produced, mixed and mastered by RIDE's Mark Gardener at OX4 Sound studio in Oxford, this collaboration began with their third album 'Wonder' and then subsequent single 'Liberation'.

Championed by the late Janice Long at BBC, among others, Jody and the Jerms is a seven-piece revolving around Jody Jeger (vocals) and Niall Jeger (guitars and vocals). Jody had never sung or been in a band before the Jerms formed in 2019, although Niall had been in 00s Oxford trio The Anydays, who graced the pages of NME, played with Radiohead and Supergrass, and were featured by Mark Radcliffe at BBC Radio 2.

Jody and the Jerms create endearing jangle-pop songs that are both evocative and relatable. Formed in Oxford in 2019, they have been writing, recording and performing their blend of melodic and uplifting indie/ alt rock ever since, having enjoyed national airtime on Radio X (UK), Sirius XM (USA) and RTVE (Spain), as well as BBC 6 Music, BBC Introducing, BBC Wales and BBC Ulster.

TAPROOT also recently released Best of Besides, a 17-track collection of remastered demos and rarities, mastered by Richard Easterling (Tantric, Zen From Mars) that hit stores and digital May 5th.

Taproot formed in 1997 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and went on to sign to Atlantic Records, releasing their Ulrich Wild (Static-X, Pantera, Mindless Self Indulgence) produced debut album GIFT in 2000, followed by extensive touring including appearances on Ozzfest 2000 and 2001, and tours with Deftones, Incubus, Papa Roach, Slipknot, Mudvayne, Disturbed, and Linkin Park.

The band's sophomore release Welcome, their first pairing with legendary producer Toby Wright (Alice in Chains, Metallica, Korn, Primus) which Rolling Stonecalled, “a self-preserving transition from new metal to art metal”, went on to sell over 500,000 copies and spawn the hit Rock singles “Poem”, which peaked at #5 on the Mainstream Rock charts, and “Mine”, helping propel Welcome to over 50 million digital streams. The band would continue heavy touring with Alien Ant Farm, Chevelle, joining Disturbed on the Music As A Weapon Tour, and Linkin Park. Vocalist Stephen Richards would also appear on the track “P5hng Me A*wy” on Linkin Park’s 2002 remix album REANIMATION.

2005 saw the release of Blue-Sky Research, also helmed by Wright, the band’s final release for Atlantic, which spawned the hit radio single “Calling”, co-written with FARvocalist Jonah Matranga, and saw the band collaborate with Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins), Nick Hexum (311), and Stephen Carpenter (Deftones), with heavy touring again, with the likes of Chevelle, Staind, P.O.D., and Flyleaf.

Taproot released several more full-length studio albums, including 2008’s Our Long Road Home (Velvet Hammer), 2010’s Plead The Fifth (Victory),with the single “Fractured (Everything I Said was True” reaching the top 20 on the Active Rock Chart, and 2012’s The Episodes, while continuing to tour consistently through 2013, when the band went on an indefinite hiatus, returning only to play a sporadic handful of local Michigan shows, before reforming officially this year.

CLOAK Unveils Cover for Samhain's "Black Dream"

Blackened heavy metal masters Cloak is now celebrating this Halloween with a dark cover of Samhain's "Black Dream," which can be streamed on all platforms HERE.

The band comments, “We recorded a cover of Samhain’s 'Black Dream' during the last album sessions, and today it’s finally released. Samhain has always been the darkest, obscure child of the Danzig bands, lyrically especially. It’s when he ditched the movie tropes and got serious about the occult and esotericism, which makes for a perfect listen during the season of the shift.”

The single follows up the band's 2023 opus, Black Flame Eternal. The album follows up 2019's 'The Burning Dawn,' which was named one of the Best Albums of the year by Metal Insider (#6), A&P Reacts (#8), Treble Zine (#11), and others.

In an era that is designed to beat down and weaken the individual, Black Flame Eternal is an album that represents strength, empowerment, and total opposition. With mounting pressure to engage in modern societal tribalism, Cloak invokes a spiritual rebellion that exists beyond good and evil with album number three. 

“All of our albums are created with a spiritual focus, dealing with how we see life, death, and everything in between. I think the earlier records dealt more with the mysteries that surrounded delving deeper into the world of dark spirituality, whereas the new material has taken what we’ve learned and used it to move forward with force,” says Cloak frontman Scott Taysom of the record’s underlying philosophy. “Black Flame Eternal is a statement of spiritual empowerment in every sense. For the first time we want people to grasp on to this sentiment, instead of keeping it completely personal within our world of Cloak. The themes and the sheer power can be felt much more within the songs that this album contains."

“Our goal is complete spiritual liberation, which is where true power and freedom exists,” he adds. “We’ve reached a point in history where people are forced to pick a side or to join a team, so to speak. Cloak stands in complete opposition to this. We aim to be a giant middle finger in the face of the empty modern world.”

While Cloak might rage against societal conventions, the Atlanta quartet embraces the rebellious and time-tested traditions of heavy metal. Whether it be the conjuring the chaotic spirit of Swedish black metal purveyors Watain and Dissection, summoning the deep, dark and sensual groove of Danzig, or evoking the raw speed and raucous energy of Motörhead, the influence of metal’s founding fathers is deep within Cloak’s DNA. Cloak’s charm, however, does not merely lie within its romanticism of the past, but rather is the way each of these genres has shaped Cloak’s own personal identity. And with Black Flame Eternal, the record sees Cloak continue to strengthen its own unique established sound.

Cloak recognizes the importance of a band’s third record, with Taysom explaining, “These influences will always be important to us, as they are some of the best and most important bands of our time. On the other hand, what is so special about getting to the third record of our career is that inspiration starts to move inwards. We had enough experience and material at this point to really know what we do best and how we can utilize these skills in the best way possible. If you look at some of the most iconic bands, their third albums were massive steps towards greatness. So to us, we feel our third record will be a very important one in our time as a band.”

The Atlantan’s evolution is evident in the fury displayed on Black Flame Eternal, which flawlessly compliments the grandiose melodic atmosphere. “This was a conscious effort. Early on before the album even started, I knew it was going to be a much more aggressive and powerful album. I wanted to take a step away from certain sounds and add a bit of brutality back in. The overall vibe matches who we are much more, so it was only fitting to move towards this sound. It almost feels like we are going back to our roots as people in certain ways,” explains Taysom.

Black Flame Eternal follows up sophomore effort The Burning Dawn, which was released in November 2019, with hell unleashing its fury on the globe just a few short months later. As plans to tour the new album around the world came to a screeching halt, the band did not stagger or falter, and instead used this gift of time to write. When reflecting upon the lost years and its impact, Taysom seemingly embraces the situation with little regrets, “Considering Cloak is a sacred space for us, these exterior things did not have as much of an impact as one might think. But it was impossible to ignore some of what was going on throughout these tumultuous years. It’s bound to affect people’s personal lives and the way the mind works during these interesting times. One thing that it did greatly affect was the fact that we could not promote The Burning Dawn properly after the one U.S. tour we did with 1349. We feel this hurt the record, but there was nothing we could do. We were one of the earliest out of the gate after venues started to open back up, and we’ve been continuing to tour in promotion of that album all the way up until now.”

Cloak utilized every minute of this time to focus on fully realizing its vision for Black Flame Eternal. “The initial stage of the writing process started in January of 2020, and lasted all the way until May 2021. It was the longest spanning album process for us so far, with many long days, nights, and weeks trying to piece the songs together the best we could.” While the record did not come together swiftly or easily, the care and attention put into its creation is evident in its powerful composition.

Making up for lost time, these road warriors have already embarked on several high profile North American tours since the autumn of 2021, commanding audiences in every major city with their chaos magick. Each performance merges the spirit of black metal with the backbone of rock ‘n’ roll as the band consistently delivers a blistering set from start to finish. Taysom describes Cloak’s live approach as “a mixture of ethereal atmosphere and total abrasive chaos. The mixture of these two opposing energies is where Cloak lies; the meeting of high and low. To us, this is where the most interesting moments happen, both emotionally and physically.”

With no borders or boundaries, Cloak is ready to embark on this new chapter as the leader of its own pack. The band bows to no one, forging its own path as one of the governing metal forces of this decade as Black Flame Eternal promises to scorch the earth and leave its hallowed mark.

Wrath of Logarius Announce EP

Wrath of Logarius come crawling out from the misty forests of Northern California. In their wake, fans a dark, flaming and eerily melodic new subgenre: Formless Black Metal.

This skeletal trio are now releasing their very first EP on Season of Mist. The six songs on 'Necrotic Assimilation' writhe between black, brutal death and even melodic post-metal - often over the course of one hard and fast song.

“'Necrotic Assimilation' is the product of blending our favorites aspects of different types of black metal into one band," says Wrath of Logarius. "We are pleased with the outcome and will continue to build on that idea.”

So what exactly is formless black metal? A mountainous slop of human flesh...an amalgamation of ever-changing eyes, fangs and bone. That description is one of the first things you hear on "The Burning One", and while awfully unsettling, it hits the nail right through the demon's skull. The song screams across the sky thanks to Noctifer's malignant vocals, only to plunge into a fiery pit of tremolo picking before snapping back into blast beats that blister under the legendary heel of Lord Marco.

"'The Burning One' tells a story about an inner dimensional invasion of earth", says Wrath of Logarius. "These unsightly creatures are set to take over the world, infecting everything living with Necrotic Assimilation, a virus that takes over the mind. Hosts are turned into an empty vessel, forced to do the bidding of The Burning One".

Formed in 2021 amidst the mist-shrouded forests of Northern California, Wrath of Logarius emerged as a formidable force in the world of extreme music. This black metal trio, consisting of Noctifer, Urath, and Vastator, set out to forge a new path with their unique genre known as Formless Black Metal.

Wrath of Logarius' creative spark ignited as they embarked on their journey to create something different in black metal. Drawing inspiration from brutal blackened death and melodic post-black metal, the skeletal trio emerged with a new subgenre. 'Necrotic Assimilation' introduces pure Formless Black Metal, where the styles change within each song.

Avatar were also immortalized as a fossil from Southern Sweden; discovered by Dr. Ben Thuy, a​​ paleontologist at the Luxembourg Natural History Museum. This fossil is now known as Ophiocoma avatar. The band appeared on the covers of Revolver and Outburn, as well.

Tarja To Release "Dark Christmas" Album + Shares "Frosty The Snowman" — WATCH

This year, Tarja is bringing the festive season early with the release of Dark Christmas, the sequel of her 2017 album From Spirits and Ghosts (Score for a Dark Christmas). Utilizing the sound of a grand orchestra and the playfulness of a children's choir, the Finnish solo artist once again perfectly blends her classically-trained voice with darker gothic influences for a masterful cinematic eerie soundtrack to the world's most beloved Christmas tunes.

With enchanting and captivating renditions of well-known Christmas carols, such as Wham!'s "Last Christmas," Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You," Paul McCartney's "Wonderful Christmastime," classics such as "Jingle Bells," "Frosty The Snowman" and "Rudolph The Red- Nosed Reindeer," as well as Tarja's brand new original song "Dark Christmas," it's the perfect album for those who want to embrace the holiday spirit while exploring a more mysterious side of the season.
