Necrowretch Release Ruthless New Video

Since their creation, Necrowretch have proudly carried the mark of the beast. A decade ago, these devil worshippers emerged alongside the old school death metal revival. But their new album casts the French band in a bigger, blacker and more Satanic mold.

"Any move toward what's considered true black metal is a good thing and Necrowretch stride with furious momentum in that particular direction", writes Black Metal Terror. "These are the fabled days of world end and I can think of no finer record to track the sound of it all than Swords of Dajjal".

Swords of Dajjal is out now. To celebrate the mass fanfare that has greeted their latest offering, today, Necrowretch are releasing a new video for one of the album's deeper cuts.

Watch the raw and ruthless video for "Vae Victis" below.

While forged with newfound mysticism, Swords of Dajjal was drawn from real life experience. Living in Turkey during the tail end of the last decade inspired Necrowretch's lead swordsmith Vlad to create their new album in the splitting image of the Antichrist. Each song warns of a harrowing prophecy brought down by Dajjal, who reigns fire over "Vae Victis".

"Woe to the vanquish!" snaps Vlad, brandishing his pale but bloodied fangs.

Indeed, "Vae Victis" is pure savagery. The blast beats waste no time, galloping ahead like the horsemen of the apocalypse through a sandstorm. But Necrowretch can slice and dice from all angles. Walls of trembling, melodic distortion close in, only for the band to sneak up and crush you with a headbanging riff that swings with all the brute force of a scepter.

"Malheur aux vaincus!" Vlad says in greetings of his band's new single. "History testifies that only the strongest survive and that prophetic wisdom still continues in the world we are living in. 'Vae Victis' is based on the story of the sack of Rome in 390 BC, where the Gauls defeated the Romans and imposed their conditions on the vanquished. In torment and disgrace, only the ruthless man, the survivor, can become a king. In chaos and torment, only the lawless man, the compeller, can become the bestower of Life and Death".

The video for "Vae Victis" was filmed in Paris. It was edited and directed by Mounir Chraibi.

Now entering their fifteenth year as a band, France’s Necrowretchare about to open the most ambitious chapter of their career with Swords Of Dajjal, their three-years-in-the-making fifth album.

Initially the sole work of multi-instrument and vision leader Vlad, the band was - for better and for worse - lumped in the ‘old school deathmetal revival’ of the early 10’s. Yet while their debut Putrid Death Sorcery did indeed  bear all the usual suspects of said genre, it nevertheless already had that extra, raw-as-fuck and just plain vicious element that really set them apart from the rest of the pack. Conforming to the norm was never in question and instead of selling out or trying to slow things down, as true misfits as they are, they went the exact opposite direction, first with 2015’sWith Serpents Scourge, only to be vigorously confirmed by its furiousfollow-up, and their first for Season Of Mist, 2017’s Satanic Slavery. To the point where once the touring cycle was over for the latter, Vlad himself felt he had explored this direction as far as he could have and that changes were on the horizon.

“On Satanic Slavery we on purpose took things as far as we could, as our goal was to deliver the most bestial album possible. But once we achieved that goal, I knew we had to take a slightly different if still as uncompromised direction.” Incidentally, that’s when Wenceslas Carrieu from Cadaveric FUMES entered the picture, first as a momentary live session on bass. But when second stringer Kev Desecrator vowed to amicably part way with the band to focus on DESTRÖYER 666, he switched to six-strings and proved to be the valuable songwriting partner Vlad had been looking for since thedeparture of the band original bass player Amphycion in 2015. “Heimmediately came up with lots of ideas and thanks to him, we now have a whole new dynamic: a bit like Sepultura had back in the days in between Max Cavalera and Andreas Kisser, with me focusing now on my vocals and playing rhythm guitars while Wenceslas takes care of all the solos, the starting riffs and the off-the-map bits.

With their fourth album, and first with Wencelas, The Ones From Hell was only one month old when Necrowretch was about to tour Europe with both Kampfar and Taake for three weeks. A tour bus was booked, the set was well-rehearsed, everything was ready and then... disaster struck. “Six days before we were due to play our first show, the whole thing was cancelled. Then COVID hit us and the world was basically shut down. We were numbfor a couple of days but soon realized that the best way to bounce back was to move forward so we instantly started working on new songs.” The result is Swords Of Dajjal by far, their biggest, boldest and most ambitious production ever.

“We spent no less than three years working on the songs, demoeing them and fine-tuning the details and rehearsing them as a three-piece and six weeks in the studio with Francis Caste (Hangman's Chair, REGARDE LES HOMMES TOMBER, Svart Crown etc.). Prior to that, we used to be a pure product of the underground, with albums done in just a couple of days whom were never 100% satisfied with in the end as we had to rush everything. We’re still very underground, mind you. But this time around, we knew we had to give it all, no matter what. So we started by changing our gear, our sound and our tuning. And once we entered the studio, we forinstance spent a whole day just testing different amps just to get the right sound and crunch we were looking for. I even took some singing lessons to gain more depth and power. In a way, it almost feels like a whole new band.”

The whole record was written on purpose mostly on acoustic twelve-string guitars (“the idea was that if it sounds good and catchy that way, it’d be even better with distortion”) and as a three-piece, “something we hadn’t done in a long time” with their new drummer Nicolas Ferrero, not exactly a newcomer as he’s been playing on and off live with them since 2018. The result is, according to Vlad, “our most black metal record, with splashes of death metal here and there. Whereas on the previous album all tempos were pushed to the extreme, there’s far more variety here to be found. It also gave us free reins to reach a more mystical, Biblical if you will vibe” fed by his experience living in Turkey in the late 10’s. “We choose to focus onthe Dajjal character, basically the antichrist in the Muslim religion. The Coran says that he’ll appear as a false prophet only to bring doom to this world, with an army of demons coming from the east.” Represented on the cover of the album with his double edged sword and bathed in the same kind of reddish and orangey mesmerizing lights one can experience when the sun sets on wind-beaten deserts, all eight songs on the album are prophecies, past and future, where Dajjal plays the leading role.

Now completed on bass by R. Cadaver (former Cadaveric Fumes vocalist) who officially joined once the recording was done after playing as a live session member for the last two years, and armed with their biggest, most complex and intense album of their career, Necrowretch are about to yield their sword of destruction and exterminate everything in sight.

Archspire are hella famous now. You can find them in the club, popping bottles and showing off their JUNO award.

In true rock star fashion, instead of paying off their massive gambling debts, the Canadian band decided to take everyone's Kickstarter money and record the most disgusting, uproarious, and out-of-this world expensive music video in the history of technical death metal.

Archspire’s 2017 Relentless Mutation was a cavalcade of speed and extremity — blasting, accelerating and, in partial reference to its title, “mutating” as each song unfolded, all the while rapid-fire, shotgun vocals blurred the lines between a man’s throat and additional instrument. It was, unquestionably, an innovation of sound and technique — Archspire had broken the speed barrier while creating songs memorable as they were unabashedly extreme for extreme metal. Thus, the pressure was already there to top Relentless Mutation when the band started to compile new songs in 2018. The global pandemic heightened the situation (read: no touring, expanded free time) and caused Archspire to turn inward and apply additional rigor to their songwriting process, albeit painstakingly so. But by the end of the fraught calendar year that was 2020, the band emerged with their fourth studio album, Bleed the Future.

According to the members of Archspire — vocalist Oli Aleron, guitarists Dean Lamb and Tobi Morelli, bassist Jared Smith and drummer Spencer Prewett — they originally went into the making of Bleed the Future under the idea they would finish the album in between the various tours scheduled for 2020. Of course, none of that happened, prompting the band to do more pre-production than at any time in their career. Archspire then subjected the album’s eight songs to near-constant critiquing that ensured they came away with a product, that in their estimation, is their best to date.

“The benefit we had was that Relentless came out in 2017,” says Lamb. “Since then, we toured more than we ever did before. We had the viewpoint of ‘What do crowds like? What parts should we write more of? What parts do people give us good feedback on?’ We wanted to expand and write those parts more consistently — there are more hooks and when we do have hooks, we wanted to repeat those parts so people will know that this is the catchy part of the song.”

“The most important thing was that we had clever songwriting,” adds Prewett. “We wanted the album to be more accessible to more people but still keep it extreme, fast and technical. So, we changed our process this time. We recorded rehearsal every day and listened to what we did afterward. We’d then come back to the jam spot and change riffs and ideas based on what everyone was thinking about during the week. It resulted in an album that everyone was happier with.”

Archspire also had the stated goal for Bleed the Future that they wanted to get faster. While such a feat may defy reason given their previous output, the band wrote their fastest song to date — the album-closing “AUM,” a cut that opens up with an audio recording of a German friend of Prewett’s who, according to the drummer, enjoys ragging on Archspire. Comedic clips aside, “AUM,” caps off an album that pushes the boundaries of speed but also is textured — Smith’s ethereal basslines often serve as mid-song interludes, while Lamb and Morelli weave melodic, spiraling guitar lines that annihilate the fretboard during “Abandon the Linear,” “Bleed the Future” and “Acrid Canon.” Accordingly, the members of Archspire were keenly aware of the expectations placed upon them after the success of Relentless Mutation. The online comments regarding whether they could top Relentless Mutation was also occasionally on their minds when composing Bleed the Future and prompted the band to ensure that all five members were happy with everything — down to the last riff, vocal line, bass run and drum pattern. “Audience expectation is really important,” says Lamb. “If we leave the jam spot and everyone is stoked on a song, it’s pretty likely that the audience will be stoked. We have the expectation of the audience, but we also have to be pumped on the music. I feel the proudest of the music. We spent more time on the songs and got better at writing. I feel it’s better music.”

“It’s an extremely tedious writing process,” adds Smith. “If anyone isn’t feeling a riff, we scrap it and have to find something we’re all happy with. It can be super-frustrating in the moment, but in the end, we have something better. We want everything we write to be a step up and I think we achieved that with Bleed the Future.”

The album is accompanied by a concept developed by Aleron that begs the question: What happens when humans start giving birth to non-humans? Born from a weird dream the vocalist had, Bleed the Future’s concept does not have finality or a conclusion. It does, however, posit a few ethical dilemmas to ties into Archspire’s long-running science fiction themes.

“I thought about what if those things they were giving birth to could actually benefit them in the future so they wouldn’t want to reject them,” says Aleron. “What would happen to the humans that weren’t born? Would they go to a different dimension? I played with that whole idea because I hadn’t seen a horror movie where that was the theme. It worked for all the songs. The only social commentary is that people don’t know what they’re giving birth to — if you put someone on this planet, you don’t know whether they’re going to be good or evil.”

Bleed the Future was recorded in October and November 2020 at Flatline Audio in Colorado with producer/engineer Dave Otero. This was the second consecutive album the band worked with Otero. According to Morelli, the recording process was seamless. “Dave was already familiar with what we each can do individually,” he says. “This time, he was more prepared to tackle those elements. How he tracks was more focused on what we were capable of and I think it really shows here.”

As live show activity for 2021 hangs in the balance (Archspire currently has dates lined up for November), the pandemic has prompted many bands to re-think their new album release dates as well as how to stay visible in a world currently without touring. But, with a fanbase that has embraced the band’s online presence that includes playthroughs, tutorials and now, cooking shows (!), Archspire heads into the Bleed the Future album cycle the benefactors of their commitment to touring and, most of all, position as one of death metal’s most forward-thinking bands.

“We have a lot of awesome fans, so I think they’ll be there to support us and pick up the album because they like the music,” says Lamb. “We’re a self-managed band; we’ve been working with the same label for ten years and I think the outcome will be good. Would it had been better if we had been on a full North American tour starting a week before the album release? Sure, but I think people will come out and support us through other means. As soon as we’re ready to go back on tour and everybody is safe to do so, we’ll be out there.”

Lowlives Announce New Album "Freaking Out" + Share New Video "Loser"

West coast based raucous rockers LOWLIVES have shared their new single and music video for "Loser." A celebration of love between outcasts, the single comes alongside the announcement of their debut album, Freaking Out, due May 31 via their new label home Spinefarm.

"'Loser' is a love song about a self-proclaimed ‘loser’ who has fallen in love with someone they also see as a misfit outcast like themselves," explains vocalist and guitarist Lee Downer. "Both as awkward and weird as each other just wishing they could be losers together. Musically, it's definitely the most pop song on the record and is an ode to '90s alternative radio."

Watch the music video to "Loser below.

Stream "Loser" here.

Pre-save Freaking Out here.

ABOUT LOWLIVES:
LOWLIVES aren't so much about carefully stoking the embers as pouring on gasoline with merry impetuosity. With vocalist Lee Downer and drummer Luke Johnson joined by guitarist Jaxon Moore and bassist Steve Lucarelli, the nascent band was founded on a shared love of '90s alternative and grunge, and a shared desire to make music once more for little more than the love of doing so.

"During my time away from music, someone bought a pair of child's ear defenders for my wife and I as a present when we announced we were pregnant," Johnson recalls. "I'd put them away in the cupboard, thinking we'd never need them, that I wouldn’t be playing any shows again. But they became this thing that nagged at me, the feeling that my daughter would never know the original me, for whom music was everything. Over time, those feelings came flooding back, as did the hunger, and the innocence. A massive part of me had been missing, and I wanted to get back to doing something pure and for the sheer love of it. That's what Lowlives is. Whatever happens, happens. Let's just Thelma And Louise this off a cliff."

Debut album Freaking Out, set for release in May 31 via Spinefarm, arrives imbued with that same such spirit. The intervening years have, after all, been above all about nurturing exactly that, first through jam sessions at Luke’s home studio and latterly fledgling adventures on the road. A 2018 tour of the UK, hastily arranged following the cancelation of a high-profile support billing the band were mere hours from embarking upon, was formative in bonding the quartet on and off the stage. Performing to an audience of two before bedding down in a trashed squat will do that to even the most seasoned, tour-hardened souls. "It really did cement who we are and what we're about," Johnson says, laughing at the fond memories of the 13-date fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants trek.

Recorded at Chapel Studios with producer Adrian Bushby, the 10 tracks that arrive under Freaking Out's banner are the scintillating end product of their self-funded two-week stay, where the four musicians would work all day with joyous abandon on fleshing out the sketches of songs with which they arrived, before retiring at night to unwind over cans of cider and the football.

"The experience of being forced into that situation of living and working together brought us even closer together, I feel," nods Downer. "We were able to work collectively in a way we hadn't previously, due to the geography of where we all live in the States."

Downer points to his passion for Nirvana and Alice In Chains shining through on tracks such as "Vertigo" and "Swan Dive," Johnson likewise to his obsession with The Smashing Pumpkins on "You Don’t Care." Fans of early-day Foo Fighters, Bush and Stone Temple Pilots will feel at home between Freaking Out’s sheets; admirers of Billie Joe Armstrong ("Freaking Out"), Matt Skiba ("Damien"), and Rivers Cuomo ("Loser"), likewise. Freaking Out is an unashamed celebration of its influences, and the simple beauty of the coalescence of guitar, bass, drums and vocals. "We're making music that excites us because it's what we want to hear," Johnson says, simply.

But make no mistake: there is depth here, too, deeply ingrained in lyrics that mine fears, anxieties, vulnerabilities, and the existential questions that keep us staring at the ceiling in the early hours. Freaking Out is, above all, the distillation of what LOWLIVES is truly about. It's rock music to make you fall in love with rock music all over again. "I thought by now I'd have the answers / Or the power to save my soul," Downer sings on the impassioned "Closer Than You Know." LOWLIVES might not hold that key, but it's the spark that he and Johnson have been missing in their lives, and looking for all along. Let it in, and you might find it's the same for you, too.

LOWLIVES ARE:
Lee Downer — Vocals/Guitar
Jaxon Moore — Guitar
Steve Lucarelli — Bass

Atoll Unleash New Album "Inhuman Implants" + Double Release "Human Extract/Inhuman Implants" Vinyl via Unique Leader Records

Extreme metal quintet Atoll has today unleashed their new album 'Inhuman Implants' out on the world, as well as their double-vinyl offering 'Human Extract & Inhuman Implants: The Double Penetration' (via Unique Leader Records). The band has also released their new track "Missionary Opposition" and the accompanying music video taken from the new album. Speaking on today's release, the band commented:

"We are stoked to finally unleash the second half of our two-part album series with our new record, Inhuman Implants. We wrote and recorded it simultaneously with the music off our last release, Human Extract, so it is stacked full of the same bludgeoning onslaught of brutality that you loved on that one. Vinyl fiends rejoice because now both albums are available together as one massive copulating "D.V.D.A." double vinyl / double album. Treat yourself to the new tunes on Inhuman Implants, and then abuse yourself with the Double Penetration vinyl release. We promise it only hurts in a good way."

Stream 'Inhuman Implants' in full here, watch the "Missionary Opposition" video below and snag 'Human Extract & Inhuman Implants: The Double Penetration' here before they're all gone.

Emerging from the scorched desert wasteland in 2014, the Phoenix, Arizona-based death metal quintet, Atoll, has been aggressively serving up their unique style for nearly the last decade. Brilliantly blending groove-based slamming brutal death with more traditional death metal elements, grind, and at times even a sprinkle of ‘core, funk, and thrash. Their composition favors a "riff piling" approach rather than the more common and simplistic verse-chorus-verse arrangement, giving the music something of a progressive element with very few repeated riffs, and less predictable movements. Atoll has remained a staple in the metal fest scene, and you may have caught them live playing with the likes of Skinless, Gorgasm, Ingested, and Aborted. Their love of the tour bus life and an importance placed on always having the highest quality, high-energy performances have gained them a reputation for being a consistent, unrelenting live force.

April 2014 birthed this bulbous abomination that has grown into the mighty Atoll when they conspired to create percussive, not frills, chugging brutality. The band immediately shot up in the local AZ scene and very quickly began to expand their live performances throughout the southwest United States, building up momentum for their 2016 debut album, and straight up slammer, The Gathering Swarm. Produced by the late Griffin “The Father” Kolinski (Knights Of The Abyss) and Jamie King (Between The Buried And Me) the album was quickly picked up and released by Amputated Vein subsidiary, Ghastly Music.

The initial success of their debut album caught the eye of Gorehouse Productions who went on to release the 2017 sophomore album, Fallout Frenzy. The vocals on this album show significant expanse in dynamic range, incorporating highs, mids, and some of the most nasty gutterals you’ll ever hear. Lyrically Fallout Frenzy expanded further on the origins of the band name, embracing themes of the atom bomb tests of Bikini Atoll in the 1950’s, and the subsequent radioactive fallout and mutations that occurred after the bombings.

The critically acclaimed album, Zoopocalypse is released in 2019 through Gorehouse Productions. This album is in-your-face aggression from front to back. A departure from the more rudimentary slams of their earlier works, Zoo implements more technicality, more tremolo and scaling, mathier leads, and a generally more advanced death metal sound that would represent the direction of the band moving forward. The mix/master was completed by Miguel Tereso of Demigod Recordings (Analepsy, Organectomy), and features a guest vocal spot from Matti Way (Disgorge, Abominable Putridity, Pathology)

During the global limbo of lockdown Atoll was able to strike a deal with the legendary Unique Leader Records, and in 2022 put out the Prepuce EP. The mini-release serves as a taster of things to come as Atoll has completed the production of two upcoming full-length albums, scheduled to drop through Unique Leader in 2023 and 2024. This two-part release will be the most technically ambitious to date. Keep your eyes peeled on the tour front, and ears open because, like an atomic tsunami, Atoll is primed to decimate the masses.

Iodine to Reissue Onelinedrawing "Sketchbook 1999-2001"

IODINE RECORDINGS TO RELEASE ONELINEDRAWING SKETCHBOOK 1999-2001 ON MAY 10

DIGITAL VERSION AVAILALE TODAY

"Onelinedrawing, is a diarist at heart, both in his music and in his daily life, and, man, does he ever rip his heart out and show it to you in his songs. A loose, free-roaming approach to confessional songwriting that pushes his music well beyond the normal sad singer/songwriter clichés" – PITCHFORK

Jonah Matranga has been making music for over 30 years.

A prolific artist, he has become an enduring institution in the scene with a devoted fan base, rich lineage, and varied music career. Jonah has often straddled the line between the underground and mainstream. He's worked with indie labels like Jade Tree and majors such as Atlantic, having fronted the bands FAR, NEW END ORIGINAL, and GRATITUDE.

His music has influenced bands from Deftones to Blink-182, and he was there for emo and post-hardcore giants in their earliest beginnings — taking bands such as Thursday and Dashboard Confessional on tour. Simply put, the scene cannot be separated from Jonah's art.

Jonah has always written from the heart and performed in an intimate way that few others have accomplished. From basements to massive festivals, he brings the same energy to them all: raw honesty and an ability to make every show unique and personal. This is most apparent in Jonah's solo and collaborative project ONELINEDRAWING. Jonah's solo performance has always been about connecting with fans in an intimate setting, where they often perform with only a guitar and R2D2 sidekick.

Sketchbook is the latest release from ONELINEDRAWING, featuring a collection of songs from Jonah's early solo years, 1999-2001, completely remastered for vinyl. The album features originals and renditions of the likes of 7 Seconds and Jawbox, as well as the Sense Field split honoring the late Jon Bunch(Sense Field/Further Seems Forever). The LP also includes liner notes and zine by Norman Brannon (Texas is the Reason/New End Original).

It will be released on vinyl by Iodine Recordings on May 10. Pre-order it here.

It is available digitally today.

Sketchbook exists as both a time capsule and thank you letter to fans and music itself — a combination of the period in which Jonah first embarked on his solo journey and a celebration of the vitality that music and community not only affords him but all of us.

"The stuff on Sketchbook has aged so beautifully," Jonah says. "It's sad, it's silly, it's searching. A lot of it was made in the moment, with whoever was around, without much worrying about it. Looking back, it turns out the most lasting, universal songs and recordings tend to be the most personal ones."

He even called out a fan favorite, saying, "'Better Than This' pretty much saved me when I was in my most human-hating era," Jonah recalls. "I had to reckon with the simple truth that the more time I spent being mad at people, the more time I spent being mad at myself. That 'I'm better than nothing' outro still runs through my head when I get to feeling judgmental of myself, or anyone else."

BIO:

Horizon Theory is a group of musicians that have joined together to create a soundscape for the future they envision. All of the which have cut their teeth in current or former bands and learned through the years what it takes to create a sound that will evoke emotion in listeners. Horizon Theory has the ability to take you on an emotional roller coaster while maintaining a hard rock sound with metal elements. Meaningful riffs, groove-oriented bass, tasteful and tribal drum beats and soaring vocals lead the path to a fresh yet familiar sound that will be a staple of this band for years to come.

Hungover Release New Album "When It Touches The Heart, Everything Resolves"

Orlando, FL-based pop-rock band Hungover has released eleven new tracks as the latest installment in their discography.

Ahead of the album release, the band shared three singles - Out of BodyReunion, and Shake It Off.

"'When It Touches the Heart, Everything Resolves' evolves the pop-forward rock sound we developed on WILT by exploring new sonic textures that call back to the artists who have informed us. You can expect a more complete and dynamic Hungover on this record." -Marc Cortes, Vocalist of Hungover

Hungover is the product of the ashes of other bands and the years its members — Marc Cortes, Sean Connors, and Gabe Santiago  spent together in the Orlando music scene. It's there that Hungover cut their teeth in small, packed clubs and bars, carefully honing their penchant for energetic, impactful, and wildly pop-sensible guitar rock. In the studio, Hungover learned to push the envelope and sharpen WILT's five songs with the help of producer and engineer Alan Reitman. After self-releasing WILT to underground acclaim, Hungover chose to team up with Smartpunk Records to release the EP on vinyl with three brand new, unreleased songs mastered by Alan Douches (Real Friends, Fall Out Boy, Every Time I Die). Three's Company, Exit: Stage Left, and Sleep Alone all effortlessly exhibit the same vigor, cleverness, and raw emotion of the five songs that preceded them, but capture the experience and know-how of a band at their peak.

Hungover as a whole is a helium, their dynamic sound inflating any room they inhabit. A bar becomes a hall, a club becomes a theatre, and so on; and it's no accident either. By allowing themselves to be molded by the rooms they've played, Hungover is in turn able to mold those rooms themselves. It's this awareness that instills WILT with the exact same sensation; that urgent push from the inside of the chest and the awareness that the moment is somehow bigger than the seconds it exists in. That indefinable something.

ABOUT SMARTPUNK RECORDS:
Smartpunk has been a recognizable name in the scene for a long time (Remember that sponsored Warped Tour stage?!). After exchanging several hands and countless ideas of what it could and should be, they decided to start a record label in 2016 with the main idea of focusing solely on reissuing records that have been out of print or never on vinyl. After all, they're a label of vinyl dorks themselves! After releasing Set Your Goals' Mutiny and Gameface's Good, they started to venture into signing newer bands. They actively balance in between many worlds — putting out amazing music from friends and bands that rock, reissuing older titles, and partnering with other incredible labels in our scene and doing exclusive color variants of their releases.

"Since forming the record label, Smartpunk Records has released timeless albums such as Less Than Jake's Anthem, Nominee's Lowlife, RIVALS' Sad Looks Pretty on Me, Virginity's POPMORTEM, and melodic skate punkers The Swellers' My Everest.

NEW MUSIC: Royal Tusk's 'Altruistic' out now on streaming services

Alberta rock trio Royal Tusk released their highly anticipated album, Altruistic today via MNRK Music Group with an accompanying documentary out now, "Do No Wrong: The Making of Altruistic."

Royal Tusk bottle raw feelings of alienation into a clarion call on the most recent single, “Hated.” The soaring melody resounds with undeniable honesty underlined by fret-burning lead licks.

“It was written from the point-of-view of someone who is labeled unredeemable,” frontman Daniel Carriere said. “It doesn’t campaign for this person’s innocence, but it poses a question. If our world can’t believe an individual can change, it’s a self-fulfilling prophecy. Change is a running theme for this body of work. I think people can and do change. It’s the hardest thing, yet it’s possible.”

Spending nearly a year writing throughout the pandemic, the trio eventually hunkered down in Alberta’s Audio Department recording studio where they self-produced Altruistic . “We usually go out of town to record, but due to the Pandemic we looked for a place locally,” said Carriere. “There was this crazy old studio in town, and it hadn’t been updated or anything. It was very vintage. We made it our home for this one.”

With an unwavering determination, the band faced highs and lows that pushed them to the brink, including an almost career-ending illness that threatened to shatter their dreams. In the midst of the process, Carriere wound up in the throes of a year-long battle to get healthy after suffering from a blood clot in his lung. He lost over 20lbs and could barely speak.

“Sandy [bassist] and Quinn [guitarist] helped me through the entire experience,” Carriere said. “These songs were written prior to this life-changing event, but they still tell a story of struggle, suffering, uncertainty, courage, and watching your back. It’s bizarre how that happened. When I think of them now, they definitely illustrate what we all went through.”

US Vinyl: out 3/1/2024

Myrath Share Video for New Single "Candles Cry"

NEW ALBUM KARMA OUT MARCH 8

Myrath reveal their new single "Candles Cry," the final peek into their upcoming new studio album Karma, which will be released on March 8.

The song, a very special and personal one for the band, comes with a cinematic music video directed by Raf Reyntjens which was shot in May, 2023 in Belgrade (Serbia).

Listen to "Candles Cry" here.  Watch the music video below.

Producer + keyboardist Kevin Codfert says,"This song is very special to me as it's the first vocal duet I'm singing with Zaher. At first, it wasn't supposed to go like this. I presented my interpretation of the chorus to Zaher, and he said, 'I love your voice. So, go ahead, I'd rather have you sing it!!' From a deeper perspective, this song is about the loss of free will, of soldiers who no longer know which cause they should support."

The song deals with inner conflict and how these can easily manifest in a negative way — if you choose to not resolve it. In an ever-changing society, which is doomed to be under constant pressure, the band makes a strong statement and encourages people to tackle them through music.

The band members of Myrath are strong believer in "music being medicine for the soul" and want to encourage people to use music as an escape from their daily lives.

"Myrath from Tunisia might just be the most underrated band ever. Their new album really excites me — they have something fresh and back it up with a great stage show. They played a tiny stage at Wacken where nobody brings more than guitars and amps, and brought a two-truck production. It was amazing!," says Pär Sundström of Sabaton

"There are too many great songs on this album to pick favorites" — 9/10, Powerplay (UK)

"This band will explode internationally in 2024" — Fireworks (UK)

As the sands of time continued to shape their journey, Myrath's relentless dedication led to the creation of their forthcoming album Karma, slated for release on March 8 via earMUSIC as limited transparent red LP, black LP, and Digipak. The forthcoming opus promises to be a testament to their evolution, delivering a sonic tapestry woven from passion and innovation.

With Karma, Myrath solidify their sound — a powerful and captivating blend of Eastern melodies and Western heavy metal. From the epic opening track "To The Stars" to the hauntingly beautiful "Child Of Prophecy," this album will take you on a theatrical journey through a world of myth and legend.

“18 songs just wasn’t enough,” remarks Munsick of his sophomore project. “This Deluxe album features songs I wrote four years ago and songs I wrote four months ago. Thank you for always pushing me to write and release more music.”

ALCEST - Announce New Album Les Chants De L'Aurore + Release 'L'Envol'

This summer will see the release of a long awaited gem: Today, French shoegaze/indie act ALCEST announce the release of their seventh album Les Chants De L'Aurore for June 21st.

Neige states:
"'L'Envol' is a musical return to the atmosphere of Alcest's first albums. I wrote this song after an inspiring trip to Corsica, where I met amazing people and was surrounded by some of the most unique landscapes I have ever seen. It is about escaping from earthly reality to join a flock of mythical birds flying through the known boundaries of our world. The song is accompanied by a music video created by the talented French artist Yoann Lossel, who also designed the album cover. For this first single release, we wanted the music, lyrics and visuals to be as coherent and immersive as possible. All the tracks on Les Chants de l'Aurore are very different from one another, but we thought this one would be a great introduction to the overall atmosphere and themes of the album."

The pre-order will start soon. To celebrate the announcement, the band shares a new song, 'L'Envol', together with an outstanding music video that you can watch here. The music video for 'L'Envol' as well as the artwork for Les Chants De L'Aurore was created by Yoann Losel.

For principal songwriter and frontman Neige, ALCEST has always been a gateway to the otherworldly, a means of exploring his spirituality. An elemental two-piece, completed by long-serving drummer and creative confidante WinterhalterALCEST seem to dip their toes in a multitude of musical genres without ever quite fitting in. “In the metal scene ALCEST is a weird band, in the indie/post-rock scene ALCEST is a weird band- we never quite fit in,” Neige reflects. “This is how I feel in life, always an outsider; It’s not a problem, it’s just the way it is.”

Fame on Fire Share New Single "Nightmare (The Devil)"

FAME ON FIRE — Bryan Kuznitz (vocals), Blake Saul (guitarist), Paul Spirou (bass), and Alex Roman (drums) — are roaring into 2024 with the new single "Nightmare (The Devil)." This venomous track offers a taste of what's to come from the band later this year.

Listen to "Nightmare (The Devil)" and watch the visualizer below

The song encourages the listener to take a long, hard look inward.

"Sometimes when you are living your dreams and doing what you love, it can quickly turn into a nightmare you can't wake up from. You sense this feeling of being trapped and not being able to find your way out," shares Kuznitz about the track's deeper meaning.

He continues, "The past two years, we pushed ourselves so hard from touring constantly and meeting people that made us feel like kings, all while trying to keep ourselves grounded in what actually mattered the most. I was seduced by a world of attention and I felt like I was losing my sense of identity. I was riding a high but I wasn't myself anymore. I don't know who I was and still don't. The dream that I always wanted became a nightmare. The sickest part of it is I accepted it."

The singer finishes, "The interesting thing is this was the first song we wrote with Erik Ron. He was really able to pull some crazy hard truths out of me when it came to lyrics. He is amazing at everything, but this song is why we chose him to produce our upcoming album."

The Palm Beach, Florida-based hit-makers are riding high off the massive success of their smash "Welcome To The Chaos," which hit #16 at rock radio. But there's no rest for the wicked and the band is busy crafting new hits to add to their growing discography which boasts over 300 million streams.

Leaving absolutely nothing on the table, Fame On Fire have carved out a lane all their own by pushing the boundaries of the relationship between rock, hip-hop, and heavy music, and by unapologetically being themselves. The band also impressed on tour with industry heavyweights like ONE OK ROCK, Our Last Night, Falling In Reverse, and Ice Nine Kills. The band snagged a coveted spot on SHIPROCKED 2023 and, next up, they'll be hitting the road with SIM throughout the spring in 1,500 cap rooms. As the band prepares for a sinister new chapter, they admit it's been a long road and it's due time to step into their power. "I feel like we keep getting more and more honest with every song we release. We are writing the music we want to hear," Kuznitz adds.

For Fame on Fire, the ceiling doesn't exist, but if it did, they'd barrel right through it anyhow.

"The sound of the 60’s if 80’s sophisti-pop had been invented, all smooth rounded notes, beautiful production and huge globules of earnest maturity" ~ Jangle Pop Hub

"A pleasure to listen to... a sort of Ben Folds does Sunshine Pop" ~ I Don't Hear a Single

"Best slices of gentle indie pop I’ve heard... with teeth wrapped in velvet, just as the lounge style was for The Specials" ~ Pop in the Real World

"Some kinda locked-in-his-bedroom genius... very listenable pop" ~ Dagger Zine

UK indie rock artist James Clarke Five presents the new single 'Ghost', previewing the album 'Zoom and The Gadflies', slated for release on March 15 via Favourite Recordings. With bittersweet reflections on childhood and the passing of time, this melodious, atmospheric, harpsichord-driven sound is reminiscent of film music by the likes of John Barry, Burt Bacharach, and Pet Sounds-era Beach Boys.

Much like Cocteau Twins was not actually a duo, James Clarke Five is the solo project of James Hughes. He is perhaps best known as keyboardist and vocalist for Liverpool 80's new wave band The Cherry Boys, contemporaries of Echo & The Bunnymen and The Teardrop Explodes, whose members also played with The LA’s, Cast, The Icicle Works and Lightning Seeds. With a slight resemblance to The Fall's Mark E. Smith, Hughes now lives in London.

With sometimes story-driven or politically-edged lyrics, James Clarke Five mixes classic baroque pop with strong melodies and distinctive chord changes, but with a more raw, guitar driven sound with overtones of glam rock and psychedelia. The new album also includes some clear nods to XTCk, Adam and the Ants and Joe Meek.

James explains, "This is a more 'reflective' song inspired by film soundtracks from the likes of John Barry, and also 'vintage' TV themes for which I have a great affection.  For me the song adds an extra dimension to what is an otherwise 'upbeat' album".

'Ghost' follows the singles 'Gadfly Groove', celebrating the personal transformation of a quiet, tentative introvert to an outgoing, gadfly-like persona, and '(Who's Been On The) Big Rock Candy', which tells the story of a couple who pursue increasingly daring deeds from roller coaster rides and cliff edges to runaway trains, all to a pounding, feedback-driven backdrop.

At the age of 12, James picked up a guitar, which he has scarcely put down since. Following The Cherry Boys, Hughes was a founder member of Exhibit B, who released the cult classic album 'Playing Dead' and several singles.

Upon moving to London in the early 2000s, Hughes launched James Clarke Five with the barnstorming single 'Get Out Of Bed' and later found success with his song 'Sexbombe Uber Alles', the main theme of the film 'Last Shop Standing'. Their most recent albums 'Underneath The Lemon Tree' (2021) and 'ParlourSounds' (2018), released by iconic Canadian label The Beautiful Music, garnered rave reviews. His music has also appeared in the film 'Soundtrack to Sixteen' and has amassed over 1.25 million Spotify streams to date.

Recorded in his home studio in London, James produced and mastered this album. He performed all instruments and vocals with the exception of Mack The Sax, who plays saxophone on 'Gadfly Groove' and Karen Bates, who provides backing vocals on 'It's Been So Long'.

As of February 23, 'Ghost' is available from fine digital platforms, including Spotify, Apple and Bandcamp.  The full 'Zoom and The Gadflies' album will be released on March 15 and is already available for pre-order.

TheCityIsOurs Share New Video "In The Dark"

Continuing their exploration of deep and evocative themes, TheCityIsOurs have released their follow-up single "In the Dark," further delving into the complexities of personal and societal challenges.

This new track builds upon the emotional narrative established in "Shame," offering a compelling blend of powerful melodies and introspective lyrics that highlight the ongoing journey towards self-discovery and acceptance.

Watch the video below.

Stream the song here.

With "In the Dark," TheCityIsOurs reaffirm their commitment to shedding light on the struggles many face in silence, providing a source of comfort and solidarity through their music.

"This song is about building up a wall to keep yourself safe by creating a fake image of yourself to make your family happy, growing up being told by society that I'd always be a disappointment because of my sexuality, something I can't control. So I'd try to hide it and do anything to not cause any sort of disappointment in anything that I can control," says singer Oli Duncanson.

He continues, "The pressure of upholding that image builds up to a point where it feels you can't go back and completely shatter your own family's perception of you. No matter how much I'd planned it out and got to a point where I was going to tell them, nothing would ever come out. [You] feel guilty because your life is a lie to people who are supposed to love you unconditionally. And no matter how irrational I knew the fear of telling them was and how frustrated with myself I'd get for not being able to tell them, I could never get the words out."

He finishes, "Your friends and potentially people who barely know you still know you more than family, which isn't fair. It feels like you can't progress as a person as you condition yourself to keep your walls built up, unable to let anyone in."

Progressive metalcore outfit RELIQA have announced their signing to Nuclear Blast Records for all territories outside of Australia, where the band have signed to Greyscale Records. To coincide with the announcement of their new label, the Sydney, Australia-based fourpiece have also revealed the video for their new single 'Terminal'.

Vocalist Monique Pym comments:

"Terminal feels like the perfect re-introduction of Reliqa to the world. It's vibrant, high-shine, and optimistic, yet with a moody, introspective cloud hanging over it that foreshadows all that's still to come. We're beyond thrilled to be back, especially now with the support of our new families at Nuclear Blast and Greyscale."

Nuclear Blast Records A&R Manager Jaap Wagemaker comments:

"We’re very excited to welcome RELIQA to our Nuclear Blast family.

The band caught our attention after the release of their last EP, I Don't Know What I Am, with their signature sound that blends elements of alternative, prog, djent, and metalcore. The diversity of their sound paired with Monique's stunning vocals means they appeal to a very wide audience.

RELIQA are on a mission, and their first release for Nuclear Blast, the exhilarating new single ‘Terminal’, is a bold statement that sees them step up to being a truly global band!

The future belongs to RELIQA, and working with Josh and Chris from their management team has been a great pleasure. We are looking forward to building this band up outside of Australia and beyond!"

FEATURING MEMBERS OF EVANESCENCE, ALICE COOPER AND GRANNY 4 BARREL, KILLINGTON PIT ANNOUNCE NEW COVER SONG 'RIDING ON THE WIND’ OUT NOW

As Killington Pit prepare to release their first original material later in 2024 and play their first live shows, the band recently released another of their hugely popular cover songs. On Friday, February 16th the band released a stunning cover of the Judas Priest classic “Riding On the Wind”. The track comes from Priest’s seminal 1982 “Screaming For Vengeance” album and is another perfect showcase for the sound and chemistry of newcomers Killington Pit.

The track features a stunning performance video from the band seen below.

The new cover version follows the bands initial two single releases. Their cover of Accept’s “Balls To The Wall” & Rainbow’s “Kill the King” now have over one and a half million streams on Spotify and hundreds of thousands of views on YouTube.

The members of Killington Pit connected during the pandemic lockdown and began recording together. As time progressed friendships grew and a core band formed with Terry LeRoi, Will Hunt, Troy McLawhorn and Chuck Garric. “Kill The King” also featured veteran guitarist Stef Burns (Alice Cooper/Huey Lewis & The News) and vocalist guitarist Jeff Blando (Slaughter/Lynchmob/Vince Neil).

Will Hunt says, “‘Riding on the Wind’ was always my favorite Priest tune, before Scott Travis, of course. I definitely tried to approach it in a way I thought Scott would play it to give it some modern energy. The fellas and I had a lotta fun with this one!

Troy McLawhorn comments,“Glenn and KK were my teachers when I was learning to play the guitar. Not literally, but I listened to Priest constantly when I was a kid and spent a lot of hours trying to figure out how to play their songs on the guitar. Judas Priest is one of my all-time favorite bands! It was a lot of fun and a challenge to try to recreate the guitar parts for our rendition of 'Riding on the Wind'. Again, I stuck pretty closely to the original because I respect and honor what they wrote and recorded, and I wanted to do it justice. I’m not trying to re-invent the song. I just wanted to feel the joy of playing it!!!

Chuck Garric adds, “Ian Hill of Judas Priest is a Bass icon! Thats what you get from a Metal God.

Terry LeRoi says, “Screaming For Vengeance is one of my all time favorite records. It’s been a huge inspiration for me over the years. 'Riding On The Wind' is the stand out track for me. Rob Halford’s voice is nothing short of amazing on this song and his midrange tones are ear shattering. His singing style and his willingness to pushing vocal limits is unparalleled and has always been my reference point. When Killington Pit started exploring possible songs to cover…this one was at the top of our list. It’s been such an honor to play with Will, Chuck and Troy and a privilege and great joy to pay tribute to Judas Priest!”

LeRoi adds, “Over the coming months we will be releasing our full length covers album with accompanying videos. 2024 will see us playing select shows worldwide and releasing original Killington Pit music. We’re looking forward to sharing this with all of the fans!

Killington Pit is:
Vocals - Terry LeRoi
Drums - Will Hunt
Guitar - Troy McLawhorn
Bass - Chuck Garric
