OUT JUNE 20: 'The Ocean Understands' EP from renowned NYC artist-producer CHARLIE NIELAND

NYC-based songwriter-producer Charlie Nieland releases his new EP 'The Ocean Understands' on June 20. Four years since releasing his acclaimed ‘Divisions’ album, he once again brings us a collection of  sweeping melodies and restless rhythms, tastefully blending post punk, dream pop and prog rock.

The material from this EP and the forthcoming album 'Stories From the Borderlines' (out later this year) took root through the NYC performance series "The Bushwick Book Club" in response to various literary sources and was inspired by Nieland's deep love of David Bowie, Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, Cocteau Twins, Love & Rockets and The Cure.

"This set of songs is a kaleidoscope of styles. They are luminous secret rooms that reflect one human’s heart in a world at the precipice. Staying creative is resistance. As authoritarians attack culture, they make the mistake that imagination can be controlled when it actually emerges from the bottom up. Culture is not imaginary. It’s is rooted in imagination but it’s more real than what can be measured," says Charlie Nieland. 

"These songs tell stories of growing up, of how we got severed, and how we connect. I burrowed into each idea over several years that were filled with love, uncertainty and family drama. The time allowed me to create and explore sound worlds with a cinematic eye; finding contrasts in texture and time. To create an experience that shifts with each listen."

Nieland recently shared the dream-pop single 'Redshift', delving into the profound experience of creating your own chosen family, viewed through the lens of cosmic expansion and astrophysical wonder, following the stunning reverb-laced lead track 'Drown'. The video, directed by multi-faceted artist Hypnodoll, was inspired by a dystopian vision of a mythical, psychedelic siren song that explores a dark, authoritarian past through jumbled stories of the future. Sifting through present wreckage, 'Drown' searches for grace amidst violent, oceanic forces.

Nieland’s musical backstory is extensive, having written, performed and produced music for decades, focused on the atmospheric and the imaginative. He also wrote for and produced such notable artists as Debbie Harry, Rufus Wainwright, Blondie and Scissor Sisters, as well as scoring the feature film 'The Safety of Objects' (starring Glenn Close), the pilot episode of 'The L Word' on Showtime and the VH-1documentary 'NY77: The Coolest Year in Hell'.

Charlie was awarded a Gold record (UK) for his production work on Blondie's 'Greatest Hits Sight & Sound' and achieved a Top 10 Billboard Dance Chart Position with Debbie Harry's single 'Two Times Blue', which he co-wrote and produced.

His dream pop band Her Vanished Grace made music for over 20 years before establishing himself as a solo artist with a mix of nuanced songwriting and sonic exploration, debuting 'Ice Age' (2014) and then 'Hopeful Monsters' (2016). Half of the literature-inspired songwriting and performing duo Lusterlit with Susan Hwang, he also produces and co-hosts the 'An Embarrassment of Prog' podcast.

Calva Louise Walk "Edge of the Abyss" + Follow the Path of the Warrior on "Impeccable" Video

Calva Louise continue their frenetic vision on the explosive new single "Impeccable." It pulls you with both hands into their complex and cinematic sci-fi universe with a mesmerizing blend of punk, metal, and electronica. They've dropped another incredibly hypnotic video, once again directed with visual effects by singer/guitarist Jess Allanic.

The sprawling story of Calva Louise is captivating. The band that found each other from opposite corners of the world — Venezuela, New Zealand, and France — discovered their home and community in the UK. Their combined influences and experiences create an incredible melting pot of musicality, and with Jess Allinac's compelling narrative vision, they've conceived something truly unique. 

Their new studio album, Edge of the Abyss, which is co-produced by Pendulum's Gareth McGrillen, will be released on July 11 via Mascot Records.

Set in 1994, "Impeccable" is a direct sequel to "W.T.F," which introduced the protagonist, Louise, who is experiencing bizarre happenings inside her home and encounters a feeling of dread signaling danger: someone is inside her house and stalking her. She catches glimpses of what has been stalking her: An uncanny version of herself — her "double." 

"It is about that feeling of powerlessness that occurs when we are in situations beyond our control," says Allanic.

Another high-energy collision of futurism, riffs, apocalyptic drums, and haunting electronics, "Impeccable" continues its journey down the rabbit hole and tells the story of a young man called Jonnie, who has been deadly poisoned and has no choice but to act impeccably to survive. 

"I follow you anywhere you go. Death spoke to the warrior, Who was looking for a chance. I follow you anywhere you go. He said to the abyss, On the edge of life," the lyrics hypnotically yearn.
 
"For this, he has to follow his double into another world, the Fractalworld, or death will strike him," the band says. "Jonnie will have to quickly understand who his double is and cross over the threshold to overcome his fate. Impeccable is the direct sequel of 'W.T.F,' where we meet the main character Louise and her own encounter with her double."

The Edge of the Abyss sees characters traveling between different dimensions, with people who mysteriously resemble doubles of each of us, like shadows that seem to stalk us but who, in reality, seek to communicate. Who are these beings? What do they want from us? How can we reach them?
 
The recent single "Lo Que Vale" — translated into English as "What is Worth," became the latest frenzied installment of the album following "Aimless," a reflective catharsis of human communication.

The cinematic sci-fi videos for the album singles show different times and worlds where some characters have encounters with their 'doubles.' "W.T.F" is the prequel of the previous singles — "La Corriente" and "Under The Skin" — all directed and VFX by Jess.

The traditional, three-piece line up of Belgian, psychedelic post-metal collective Psychonaut has long belied the compositional prowess, captivating narrative depth and crushing live presence of a band now operating at the forefront of forward-thinking, contemporary heavy music.

Having sent a shockwave through the post-metal and prog scenes with their three times repressed Pelagic Records debut Unfold The God Man in 2020 before following it up with the transformative metaphysical complexities of 2022’s Violate Consensus Reality, Psychonaut have played prestigious Belgian open-air festivals like Alcatraz, Rock Herk and Boomtown Festival as well as boutique events such as Soulcrusher, Roadburn Redux and A Colossal Weekend whilst sharing stages across Europe with the likes of Amenra, Brutus and Pelagic labelmates The Ocean and PG.Lost.

The seed of World Maker took shape just as the campaign for Violate Consensus Reality came to a close, with the news that guitarist/vocalist Stefan De Graef was to become a father. This tilting of life’s axis led De Graef, like most fathers-to-be, to re-assess what was really important. As such, the music he was inspired to write felt free of the band’s previous philosophical and spiritual foundations and instead took the form of life lessons for his unborn son, a legacy of love in case something were ever to happen.

This hopeful euphoria shines keenly throughout World Maker as an uncharacteristically optimistic warmth; from the reverberating Rhodes organ on the titular opening track and the meandering, free-jazz inspired guitar solo that introduces "Everything Else is Just The Weather" to elements of world music, electronica and the otherworldly voice of Dutch multi-instrumentalist and old friend Anthe Huybrechts (Anthe/Helion Creek) most notably on tracks like "Origins" which also features tabla, a pair of indian hand drums, as its propulsive heartbeat.

Being also the opening track of Domination, the track builds up tension with anthemic lead harmonies before bursting drums and guitars break through the idyll to set the tone for another highly melodic piece from PRIMAL FEAR’s musical forge. “Great Gosh A’ Mighty” marks the band’s first video following their recent trip to the U.S., where they were invited by the city council of Macon, Georgia. During their stay, DIAMOND DOGS performed an exclusive show for locals at the city’s grand amphitheater, connected with friends and relatives of Little Richard, Otis Redding, and The Allman Brothers, and recorded new original material at the legendary Capricorn Studios.

DIAMOND DOGS may be a bunch of renaissance rockers deeply rooted in the early 70s British rock and roll, but just like their forerunners, they owe almost everything to Little Richard, the architect of it all! It's impossible to even imagine rock and roll without him.

One of DIAMOND DOGS' early tunes is called "Lunatic Eye-Rolling Delivery" which is a line nicked from a concert review of Little Richard, and we believe it sums up the essence of his greatness pretty well. He was much more than a rock pioneer, the way he dressed up and spoke was something the world had never experienced before.

Little Richard got Paul McCartney to write "I Saw Her Standing There," got James Browna new haircut, and put a silly little mustache on Prince!

The idea of recording a homage to the true king of rock and roll had been with the band for many years, when CHRIS SPEDDING one day called Sulo and asked if they should record something together. Of course, Sulo immediately said yes, and then asked him to join DIAMOND DOGS in the upcoming studio session to record some well-selected Little Richard gems for an LP. All said and done, and CHRIS was extra thrilled that his favorite, "Send Me Some Lovin,'' was among the songs that were picked.

And, on a cold and windy January day, the DOGS gathered with the new old puppy in the sweet premises of Dog Pound Studios, along with their beloved friend and engineer Jonas Åhlén.

Heaven Shall Burn Team Up with Old Friend Jesse Leach of Killswitch Engage for "Numbered Days" Cover

Following their tradition of covering some of their favorite and most influential tracks featuring members of the original, Heaven Shall Burn are releasing "Numbered Days" (Feat. Jesse Leach of Killswitch Engage).

"Heimat" = German for "home/homeland/native land" — a term that merely refers to a relationship between people and spaces but has nevertheless always been highly emotionally charged. Often misused, it sometimes causes discomfort, lively discussions, and battles over interpretation.

Guitarist Maik Weichert comments, "Heimat is not meant as the narrow-minded end point in the sense it has been used by agitators and populists, but the starting point for observations and perspectives. The album is about a much wider sense of the term 'Heimat': The homelands for many different people and also about the spiritual home, something that shapes and determines our thoughts and actions."

Heaven Shall Burn took their time with the follow-up to Of Truth And Sacrifice, which reached No. 1 on the Official German Album Charts in 2020. Heimat was produced at the band's own studio, The Dude Ranch, which is run by guitarist Alexander Dietz. As in the past, Danish producer Tue Madsen took care of the mixing and mastering.

The Thuringians enlisted the renowned artist Eliran Kantor for the artwork, who previously crafted the artwork for Of Truth And Sacrifice. The centerpiece of the impressive triptych is a rearing stag — in its roaring variant a classic motif of wildlife painting, the epitome of kitsch and trivial art from the 19th and 20th centuries and interpreted by some as a symbol of patriarchy and capitalist competition, but here placed as a vital allegory of resistance amid an apocalyptic scene. He is flanked by a hunting lynx and a watchful owl, which complete the highly symbolic artwork concept as further elements of the triptych. As with Of Truth And Sacrifice, Heaven Shall Burn worked together with composer, producer and director Sven Helbig and conductor Wilhelm Keitel, this time supported by the Mondëna Quartet and the Ukrainian Sophia Chamber Choir.

Cryptopsy Release Eye-Popping New Single

After 30 years, Cryptopsy are no strangers to the spotlight. Since their ungentle exhumation from the Canadian underground in 1993, the Montreal natives have worn the horned crown as the most vile band in death metal. Their upcoming ninth album and first since winning a JUNO Award embodies the many malicious mutations that have defined their Hall of Fame discography. The concept for Cryptopsy's upcoming new album appeared to vocalist Matt McGachy in an eerily prescient dream. But the latest single from An Insatiable Violence was inspired by the real life horrors of kidfluencing. "Nurture the chosen one", McGachy barks, opening "Dead Eyes Replete" with his freshly groomed death growls.

"We've played at least 140 shows since our last album", he says, "and all those reps have helped me deepen and darken my false chord screams".   

Just like a doe-eyed YouTuber is pounced upon by wolves waiting hungrily in the comment section, "Dead Eyes Replete" opens in unfiltered, all caps, attack mode. As Christian Donaldson bends his frets like a spotlight operator who's gone haywire, Flo Mounier rolls out carpet-bombing blasts beats with blinding precision. "Since our last album, I've developed new techniques that allow us to go even faster", says Mounier. His controlled chaos is still the force that binds Cryptopsy's bloodlust, though he managed to raise the eyebrows of their in-house producer. Blink and you may miss it, but lurking within the song's stuffed sockets is a trampling fill that resembles another powerhouse.

"I love John Bonham's playing", Mounier says. "I told Chris that we were leaving that part in there. It's the closest we're ever going to come to sounding like Led Zeppelin".

During death metal's initial spike in popularity, Cryptopsy quickly staked their claim as the scene's most brutal band of technicians. They never stop knifing between surgical tempo changes and filthy hooks, but An Insatiable Violence gouges deeper into the lascivious grooves that won them last year's Canadian Grammy for best Metal/Hard Music Album. "Beware the spotlight" McGachy flashes with his signature bat-like shriek just before bassist Oli Pinnard slams "Dead Eyes Replete" shut with a career-best breakdown.

In the wake of spreading bloodshed all over Europe with Decapitated, Cryptopsy are now fiending to feast on the new cuts from An Insatiable Violence with their ravenous fans across the U.S.

This fall, the band are joining brutal technical death metal pharaohs Nile on a 25-date tour of the East Coast, Midwest and Pacific Northwest. Joining them on this run are The Last Ten Seconds of Life and Cognitive. 

"We are so excited to bring An Insatiable Violence to the United States. It's a pleasure to tour amongst friends and this lineup is incredibly stacked!", Cryptopsy says. "Our new album was written for a live setting. The songs are more brutal and grooving so that people can really latch on and bang their heads".

Mixed and mastered by Noah Buchanan (Nunslaughter, Midnight) at Mercenary Studios, the five-track EP showcases SADISTIC FORCE at their most ferocious and focused. Featuring blistering guest solos from Matteo Von Bewitcher (Bewitcher), Tony Rot, and Mark Pursino (Electrocutioner), the EP stands as a testament to their deep roots in traditional heavy metal, thrash, and extreme metal brutality. 

Thematically, 'Morbid Odyssey' plunges into psychedelic necromancy, artistic serial killers, satanic vengeance, and BDSM-driven nightmares, all set to a backdrop of unrelenting speed and power. From the eerie, drug-fueled visions of the title track to the witch-trial revenge fantasy of "Abnormal Cruelties," the EP burns with dark, cinematic storytelling and a razor-sharp edge.

Meant to be listened to on 8-track in a '75 Camaro while passing a hash pipe and sipping beer from a pull-tab can, SADISTIC FORCE is the band who will restore the adjective "heavy" to metal music. Emerging from the dark heart of Austin, Texas, they deliver a blistering assault of blackened speed metal infused with old-school heavy metal spirit. Led by James Oliver(guitar/vocals), the band channels the raw intensity of classic acts Judas Priest, Motörhead, and the New Wave of British Heavy Metal while injecting the relentless aggression of extreme metal. 

Formed in late 2020, SADISTIC FORCE began as Oliver's vision of unfiltered, high-energy heavy metal-built on speed, attitude, and a horror-infused aesthetic. What started as a solo project quickly evolved into a full-throttle force of nature, as rock'n'roll bassist Mike Gupta and extreme metal powerhouse drummer JP Campo completed the lineup. The result? TIAN QIYI 'Mongolian Dub' sets the groove for 'Songs For Workers' album ft. JAH WOBBLE

Genre-defying UK-based music outfit Tian Qiyi presents 'Mongolian Dub', a powerful offering from their sophomore album 'Songs For Workers', out June 27 via Pagoda Records.  Featuring the legendary Jah Wobble on bass, this is a fascinating ethno-psychedelic initiation into this 10-track musical journey, which bridges generations and cultures, blending deep dub grooves with Eastern traditions. This single follows their stunning lead track 'Watch The Sunrise'.

More than just a band, Tian Qiyi brings together brothers John Tian Qi Wardle and Charlie Tian Yi Wardle with their father, Jah Wobble (John Wardle). Their unique sound reflects their rich family heritage, blending their father's pioneering work in post-punk and dub with the Chinese cultural influences of their mother, Zilan Liao.

On the foundation of their acclaimed 2024 debut album 'Red Mist', with standout singles  'Incantation' and 'Red Mist', the Wardle brothers continue to forge a sound that blends dub, post-punk, and experimental production with rich influences from Traditional Chinese, Mongolian, and Irish music.

This Tian Qiyi album has already generated plays from Gideon Coe, Mark Riley and Stuart Maconie on BBC 6 Music, and from John Kennedy on Radio X London. 'Songs For Workers' represents the next evolution in their mission to create border-crossing musical experiences that honour their diverse influences while crafting something uniquely their own, further exploring the intersection of traditional Asian and Celtic soundscapes with contemporary dub production techniques.

John Tian Qi handles all drumming and percussion - both Eastern and Western - on the album. Charlie Wardle’s unique vocal style is to the fore, as is his incredible musical dexterity on traditional Chinese and Mongolian instruments, bringing a funky and, at times, psychedelic quality to the music, in addition to that which is expressly traditional. Jah Wobble plays bass on most of the album’s tracks, while John Tian Qi contributes bass on 'Luoyang' and 'Siege' and synth / Moog bass on 'Watch The Sunrise', highlighting Tian Qiyi's growing creative independence and production chops.  

Fully produced by Tian Qiyi, 'Songs For Workers' marks a bold step forward in their cross-cultural, multi-generational musical journey. Rooted in heritage and driven by experimentation, their sound is shaped by the magnetic tension between ancient tradition and dub futurism, East and West, land and spirit—a musical space that is uniquely their own.


Drawing inspiration from Miles Davis's groundbreaking electric period and the experimental spirit of Krautrock, the band creates expansive, boundary-pushing soundscapes that defy easy categorization. Jah Wobble's involvement adds a deep, distinctive dub foundation to the family's cross-cultural vision, while the brothers' mastery of traditional Chinese instruments reflects their maternal heritage.

The duo's name carries deep personal significance, combining elements of the brothers' middle names: "Tian," shared by both siblings, paired with "Qi" (meaning "together") and "Yi" (meaning "one"). This linguistic fusion mirrors their musical approach, where disparate elements unite to create something entirely new—much like their parents' union of Eastern and Western cultural traditions.

The full 'Songs for Workers', set for release on June 27, is available for pre-order. A handful of festival shows will be happening over the summer in support of this album.

A Voice From The Outer Dark captures AVERSIONS CROWN in a new phase of creative intensity. The EP distills everything the band is — and everything it’s becoming — into three tracks of sheer ferocity. Conceptually, the band continues to explore existential and cosmic horror themes, blurring the lines between science fiction and spiritual annihilation, channeling the sound of a world tearing itself apart from the inside out. The arrival of new vocalist Alex Teyen(formerly of BLACK TONGUE) signals a seismic shift.

A Voice From The Outer Dark was recorded in October 2024. It was produced by Lance Prenc and Edward Sklavos. Prenc was also responsible for the mixing and mastering while Sklavos handled the engineering. The cover artwork for the EP was created by Róbert A Borbás(aka Grindesign).

A Voice From The Outer Dark is the sound of a band reborn through fire, silence, and darkness — ready to reestablish their legacy and redefine deathcore in the process.

WHEEL OF TIME, the progressive power metal project led by Beijing-based composer and multi-instrumentalist Jimmie Hong, has set November 12, 2025 as the release date for its debut full-length album Asymmetry. The first single, "Freedom Day", is out now, offering an electrifying preview of the album’s sweeping sound and bold creative vision. Asymmetry is about embracing imperfection, both in life and in music. It is a personal and spiritual journey, shaped by both progressive and power metal traditions, with influences from across the world.

"Freedom Day" captures that spirit with an explosive performance from Michele Luppi (WHITE SNAKE) on vocals and Derek Sherinian (ex-DREAM THEATER, ex-SONS OF APOLLO, PLANET X) on keyboards. The track balances intricate rhythmic tension with soaring melodic release, embodying both the technical mastery and emotional depth that define WHEEL OF TIME’s sound. 

The album Asymmetry features an international lineup of world-class musicians, including Tony MacAlpine, Timo Tolkki, Alexandre Aposan, Farhad Hossain, Ignacio Rodríguez, and more. Speaking about the new single, Rex Tycoon shares, "This song came about after a trip back home to my parents’ house around Christmas time. My grandmother was telling a story she loves to tell, about how after my grandfather passed away, when I was really young, I would ask her, “What kind of car does Jesus drive?” Because my grandfather was really into cars. I never got to know my grandfather very well since I was so young when he passed but this song sort of transformed into an ode to the kind of guy that I came to know him as from stories and photographs, the blue-collar, hard-working, salt-of-the-earth working class individual who’s back the world is built upon but who the world is nevertheless constantly spitting on in return. The song seemed to be a perfect fit for both the album closer and the lead single."

In a fusion of power pop greatness, punk energy and grooving riffs, Rex Tycoon’s debut full-length No Limit 2 Luv (Smartpunk Records) shows off what makes the band so special. Bursting to life with “Rock ‘N Roll Star,” No Limit 2 Luv kicks off feeling stadium huge while lyrically professing a humble reality, the sound manifesting the kind of rock ‘n’ roll stardom this album deserves. Over the course of ten songs Rex Tycoon conjures the energy of beer-soaked basement parties as well as meandering, soul searching drives. It’s eclectic but consistent, showing the band’s flexibility and unique stylistic foundation. Reesman, Joey Tiberio (guitar), Keith Tucker (bass, synth, vocals) and Jared Stalker (drums) have spent years fine tuning and self-recording infectious rock riffs and poppy hooks from Tucker and Stalker’s Pittsburgh basement. The band took their punk spirit out of the basement and into the studio for their Smartpunk debut No Limit 2 Luv. The album was recorded with Damion Schiralli at Russian Recording in Bloomington, Indiana and mastered by Mike Bridavsky (Russian Recording), and the result is a more spacious sound to reveal all the thoughtful details of Rex Tycoon’s songwriting.
