Portland's SUN ATOMS release 'Everything Forever' album feat. guests from MODEST MOUSE, THE VANDELLES & more

Portland psychedelic gaze-wave outfit Sun Atoms present their sophomore album 'Everything Forever', released on November 8 via Little Cloud Records. Meticulously crafted with cosmic energy, their magnum opus features notable guest appearances by Modest Mouse’s Isaac Brock, Jasno Swarez of The Vandelles, and Lauren Andino of Tremours, amongst others. This sophomore album realizes the promise that was there in the debut not only musically, but in a sacred sense. This album gets between the ears, then heads south down past the brain and into the heart.

Sun Atoms is made up of vocalist Jsun Atoms (The Upsidedown, Daydream Machine), producer and bassist Peter G. Holmström (The Dandy WarholsPete International Airport), multi- instrumentalist June Kang, saxophonist-trumpeter- guitarist Mars de Ponte (LoveBomb Go-Go), drummer Eric Rubalcava and guitarist Derek Spencer Longoria-Gomez (Hi Hazel).

Homström and iconic mixing engineer Jagz Kooner had just finished The Dandy Warhols' latest album, generating an extraordinary symbiosis. Credited with creating some of the most genre-defining songs of the last 30 years, Kooner began his career working with Andrew Weatherall, remixing and producing for the likes of Bjork, The Chemical Brothers and New Order, as well as mixing for Primal Scream, Massive Attack, Oasis, Garbage and Killing Joke. With Pete producing and Jagz mixing in one of the great marvels of prehistoric Britain (Avebury Henge) at Jagz's Stone Circles Studios, the pair pushed the sonic envelope into the great abyss. The coup de grace was having Keith Tenniswood (Spiritualized, Death in Vegas) master the album at Curve Pusher UK.

Last week, the band shared the surreal, psychedelic fever dream of a video for 'Narco Polo' featuring Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse, which Jsun Atoms says "feels like a dada ice cream party inside a Salvador Dali painting". Holmström and Brock have been friends and collaborators for years, and Sun Atoms recently supported Modest Mouse for some West Coast shows. Earlier in 2024, Sun Atoms released the lead single 'Ceiling Tiles' with Leonard Cohen tribute 'Tower of Song (in the key of JAMC)', and fantastic sonic odyssey 'Take This Love' with B-side 'And The Lion Saw The UFO'.

A genre-defying fusion of psychedelic rock and indie pop, Sun Atoms push the boundaries of their own sonic exploration. Their debut album 'Let There Be Light' (2021). mixed by producer Stephen Street (Blur, The Smiths, The Cranberries), also involvedThe Black Angels’ Alex Maas,The Vandelles' Jasno SwarezandGregg Williams (Sheryl Crow, Blitzen Trapper)

This year, Sun Atoms played a series of sold-out concerts with Dinosaur Jr., crowning the list of shows they have played with Fishbone, Modest Mouse, Federale, Besnard Lakes, The Veldt, New Candys and TREMOURS. They've also shared the stage with the likes of Ty Segall, A Place To Bury Strangers, Neko Case, Built To Spill. Allah Las, Broncho and Night Beats.

As of November 8, 'Everything Forever' is out everywhere, including Apple Music, Spotify and Bandcamp.  It can also be ordered on vinyl directly from Little Cloud Records. Sun Atoms has several upcoming concerts in Portland and Seattle, accompanied by The Veldt, Asteroid #4, Los Mundos and Valley Suns, capping off the year with The Dandy Warhols 30th Anniversary show (with LSD & The Search For God and TREMOURS) in Portland on December 11.

Sun Atoms 'Everything Forever' album and new video for 'Narco Polo' feat. Isaac Brock

As the final single before releasing their sophomore album 'Everything Forever', Portland psychedelic gaze-wave outfit Sun Atoms and Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse transport unaware bystanders to a surreal, psychedelic fever dream in 'Narco Polo'. With B-side 'Stand Up Citizen', this is the final single from the band's sophomore record', set for release on November 8 via Little Cloud Records.

Sun Atoms is made up of producer and bassist Peter G. Holmström (The Dandy WarholsPete International Airport), vocalist Jsun Atoms (The Upsidedown, Daydream Machine), multi-instrumentalist June Kang, saxophonist-trumpeter-guitarist Mars de Ponte (LoveBomb Go-Go), drummer Eric Rubalcava and guitarist Derek Spencer Longoria-Gomez (Hi Hazel).

Lending his distinct dark brilliance to this track, Brocks’ delivery bursts in a tidal ebb and flow throughout this fun artsy tune. Abuzz with a blend of rhythmic strangeness, it is complemented by a fun video created by Brady Tuazon.

"I crafted a narrative where Isaac is a wizard controlling people, with Jsun serving as his mischievous emissary, blurring the lines between realities. At its core, the concept aligns with Sun Atoms' recurring theme of duality. I wanted to take that theme and create a world where the characters aren’t sure if they’re awake or dreaming. Working with Isaac was simply inspiring. We filmed in his incredible space.... His interactions with the toys and wood carvings became the cornerstone of our visual narrative. His performance shaped the way we filmed the next scenes in ways we couldn't have anticipated," says director Brady Tuazon.

"We were fortunate to secure a vibrant location in Portland for the other scenes, perfectly complementing the dreamscape we wanted to create. It was almost as if the location became a character in itself. Every angle and every decoration in the house complimented the surreal nature of our story. In an era where AI is increasingly being utilized in video production, we made a conscious choice to rely on our own strengths and experiences to craft a compelling story. We didn’t want AI to take away the joys of creating. It’s what makes us human and deepens our connection. That connection can’t be replicated through a prompt, but instead is built slowly with each interaction. 'Narco Polo' is more than just a music video - it's a labor of love and a true embodiment of our collective artistic spirit".

Jsun Atoms adds, "The video shoot felt like a dada ice cream party inside a Salvador Dali painting. There was a scene that was especially David Lynchian in the bedroom with all of the characters, including a giant hand, a bear, an ice cream cone (which wicked wizard Isaac ad magically controlled into contorting through the air), and menacing Derek (in his own fever dream inside a dream inside a dream). I have to hand it to director Brady Tuazon. He got the entire cast to trade in their comfort zone for the Twilight Zone".

Peter G. Holmström and Isaac have been friends and collaborators for years, and Sun Atoms recently supported Modest Mouse for some West Coast shows. Holmström shares, "The video is amazing, the first time I saw it was when I was at Jagz Kooner's studio in Avebury Henge UK and we watched it 3 times in a row. Isaac brought a character to the song and video that painted outside the usual Sun Atoms color palate and it takes the music and imagery somewhere we had never gone before".

The 'Everything Forever' LP was mixed by iconic producer Jagz Kooner (Massive Attack, Primal Scream, Oasis, Garbage) and mastered by Keith Tenniswood (Spiritualized, Death In Vegas). Earlier this year, Sun Atoms released two singles from this album on 7-inch vinyl and digitally - the new wave 'Ceiling Tiles' with Leonard Cohen tribute 'Tower of Song (in the key of JAMC)', followed by the fantastic sonic odyssey 'Take This Love' with B-side 'And The Lion Saw The UFO'.

Meticulously crafted with cosmic energy, Sun Atoms captivates the senses beyond the boundaries of sound and space. A genre-defying fusion of psychedelic rock and indie pop, Sun Atoms push the boundaries of their own sonic exploration. Their debut album 'Let There Be Light' (2021). mixed by producer Stephen Street (Blur, The Smiths, The Cranberries), also involved The Black Angels’ Alex Maas, The Vandelles' Jasno Swarez and Gregg Williams (Sheryl Crow, Blitzen Trapper)

"Ebbing and flowing like Love and Rockets under a Spiritualized raga; the spirit of Bowie’s classic Moonage Daydream echoes through the band’s astral fabric” First Look

"Artistic leap into an enthralling intersection of post-punk, indie rock and new wave... a gateway for your consciousness to coast into fascinating sonic realms" ~ Spill Magazine

“Sun Atoms bend and blend through luminary influences Leonard Cohen, The Cure, Moon Duo and Nick Cave in an amalgamation that combines psychedelic, dark wave, and post-modern pop” ~ The Big Takeover

"Sun Atoms fuses styles and sounds like a long lost Basquiat painting found in deep space among comets and stars” ~ Maximum Volume

In a whirlwind of sonic serendipity, Portland psychedelic gaze-wave outfit Sun Atoms presents their new single 'Take This Love', a sonic odyssey that transports listeners to a realm of pure musical enchantment. The fun continues in the clever sci-fi video, created by Bradley Tuazon at Oregon's world-famous Airplane Home. On July 26, this 2-track single will be released via Little Cloud Records digitally and on 7" vinyl, previewing Sun Atoms' sophomore album.

Sun Atoms is made up of bassist Peter G. Holmström (The Dandy WarholsPete International Airport), vocalist Jsun Atoms (The Upsidedown, Daydream Machine), multi-instrumentalist June Kang, Mars de Ponte (LoveBomb Go-Go), L.A. drummer Eric Rubalcava and Boise native Derek Spencer Longoria-Gomez (Hi Hazel).

Mixed by iconic producer Jagz Kooner (Massive Attack, Primal Scream, Oasis, Garbage) and mastered by Keith Tenniswood (Spiritualized, Death In Vegas), 'Take This Love' stands as a testament to Sun Atoms' commitment to musical innovation and creativity with Jsun Atoms delving into introspective realms, while pondering the “hieroglyphs in bright lights” illuminated by the desert stars. Its lyrical crowning blow lies in the line “take this love and shove it up your heart”.

'Take This Love' came to life in the wee hours of the morning following a transformative show in the enigmatic locale of Pioneertown. Once at Joshua Tree Recording Studios, the band found themselves ensconced in a creative fervor at 3am, recorded by Tommy Dietrick (The Brian Jonestown Massacre, David J, Mark Gardener, Smallstone, Sky Parade). As the desert sands whispered ancient mysteries, the band delved into uncharted territory, forging a unique sonic tapestry that transcends convention.
.
“We thought we'd be back earlier in the night, but hanging with friends after the show pushed us back a few hours. When we arrived at the studio, the house kit was already set up for our drummer, Eric. He and Tommy captured a driving thunderous rhythm, perfectly accenting the sequencing pattern June Kang brought in on the MPC. Peter came up with another one of his brilliant, hooky-pirate bass lines while our guitarist Derek tightroped the threshold of melody and fuzz. Enigmatic Martian muse Mars de Ponte added a celestial touch with ear-worm guitar leads and ethereal keys that linger long past the final chord. Peter later doubled the lead guitar line with a toy xylophone and Portland vocalist Allison Green (The Black Doors) also added her signature rich texture to the vocals," explains Jsun Adams.

Venturing into strange new sonic frontiers, the B-side 'And The Lion Saw The UFO' emerges as a sci-fi cautionary tale, resonating with experimental Krautrock beats and psychedelic textures. Initially recorded with Eric Crespo of experimental psych outfit Abronia, and featuring the illustrious Gregg Williams (Sheryl Crow, The Dandy Warhols) on hand drums, this auditory odyssey delves into dreamlike reverie, blurring the line between reality and imagination.

Meticulously crafted and imbued with cosmic energy, Sun Atoms' music captivates the senses, operating beyond the boundaries of sound and space. A genre-defying fusion of psychedelic rock, indie pop and post-punk, Sun Atoms push the boundaries of their own sonic exploration, inviting listeners on a musical escapade that defies categorization.

"From the start, 'Take This Love' captivated my ears with its mesmerizing rhythm and unapologetically bold lyrics. While the themes of love are familiar, Jason's lyrics always carry an element of surprise. The line "hieroglyphs in bright lights" inspired the wild idea of interdimensional love, a concept that, though unconventional, highlights the transcendent nature of love—a connection we can sense even without a shared language. Our idea was ambitious but the best way to visualize the song was through the story of two inter-dimensional beings trying to find each other," says video producer Bradley Tuazon.

"I had always wanted to film at the airplane home in Hillsboro, and this video's concept was perfect for it. Bruce Campbell (owner of the Airplane Home) kindly allowed us to film there. We didn’t really have a budget so we had to maximize our visuals with what was available to us. The location aided us in creating something fun, memorable and off the wall. From start to finish, we had just under a month to finalize storyboards, make costumes, and figure out logistics on top of our full-time jobs. This is the fifth production our crew has done this year, and I'm humbled each time we come together to create something special."

Earlier this year, Sun Atoms released their 'Ceiling Tiles' single on 7-inch vinyl, featuring the new wave-inspired single 'Ceiling Tiles' and the charismatic B-side (a unique fuzzed-out tribute to Leonard Cohen) called 'Tower of Song (in the key of JAMC)'. They also played a series of sold-out concerts with Dinosaur Jr. and shows with Federale, The Veldt and TREMOURS, in addition to playing Seagaze Festival and Treefort Festival, where they shared the stage with Ty Segall, A Place To Bury Strangers, Neko Case and Built To Spill.

The band debuted in 2021 with the album 'Let There Be Light', produced by Peter G. Holmström and mixed by iconic producer Stephen Street (Blur, The Smiths, The Cranberries), which involving contributions by The Black Angels’ Alex Maas, The Vandelles' Jasno Swarez  and Gregg Williams (Sheryl Crow, Blitzen Trapper). Since then, Sun Atoms has also played shows with Modest Mouse, Fishbone, Besnard Lakes, The Veldt and New Candys, and has shared the stage with the Allah Las, Broncho and Night Beats.

On July 26, 'Take This Love' will be released on 7-inch vinyl and fine digital platforms, including Apple Music, Spotify and Bandcamp. In the meantime, the 'Ceiling Tiles' single is also available on beautiful 7" vinyl.

Portland alternative pop / postmodern rock outfit Sun Atoms presents a unique fuzzed-out tribute to iconic songwriter Leonard Cohen with 'Tower of Song (in the key of JAMC)', released as the flipside of their new 'Ceiling Tiles' single.

Released via Little Cloud Records digitally and on 7" vinyl and mixed by the iconic Jagz Kooner (Massive Attack, Primal Scream, Oasis, Garbage), this single is the first taste of the band's sophomore album (out ths summer). The accompanying video, produced by Bradley Tuazon, follows ghosts on a velvety caper through an endless maze through streets and a 113,000+ square foot state-of-the-art concert venue, the band members appearing like rare birds in the roles of madcap non-conformist odd fellows living outside of the lines.

Sun Atoms is made up of bassist Peter G. Holmström (The Dandy WarholsPete International Airport), vocalist Jsun Atoms (The Upsidedown, Daydream Machine), multi-instrumentalist June Kang, Mars de Ponte (LoveBomb Go-Go), L.A. drummer Eric Rubalcava and Boise native Derek Spencer Longoria-Gomez(Hi Hazel).

2021 brought the band's debut album 'Let There Be Light', also produced by Holmström and mixed by the iconic Stephen Street (Blur, The Smiths, The Cranberries), involving performances by the likes of The Vandelles' Jasno Swarez, The Black Angels’ Alex Maas and Gregg Williams (Sheryl Crow, Blitzen Trapper).

"When I was a child, I saw a being made of light climb through my bedroom window, they stood at the foot of my bed and reached out to touch my foot," explains Jsun Atoms. "Mesmerizing and haunting, much like the new Sun Atoms single 'Ceiling Tiles', which reveals a story of characters living under a faux sky being manipulated to make it appear that the stars are aligning, when in fact, above this tiled Truman Show, the stars are doing just that. The characters in the song go about their day-to-day dance while the globe they are spinning on becomes an eye."

Sun Atoms kicked off 2024 by playing three sold-out shows at Portland’s historic Revolution Hall, opening for Dinosaur Jr., which presented the perfect chance to shoot their new video. With its long stairways and iconic brick facade as the ideal backdrop for this monochromatic video, here unfolds a mysterious tale of characters living between worlds and connected by Jean Cocteau’s famously mirrored portal.

Sun Atoms has also played shows with Modest Mouse, Fishbone, Besnard Lakes, The Veldt and New Candys, as well as performing at Seattle’s Freakout Fest and Portland’s Lose Yr Mind Fest with Allah Las, Broncho and Night Beats.

The 'Ceiling Tiles' single is available on beautiful 7" vinyl and from fine digital platforms, including Apple Music, Spotify and Bandcamp. Sun Atoms are touring the West Coast in March-April, kicking off with Treefort Festival, where they join Ty Segall, A Place To Bury Strangers, Neko Case and Built To Spill. Tickets for this tour are now available to order.
