Psychedelic alt-pop outfit Messiness unleashes sonic supernova on debut eponymous album

Psychedelic indie-rock outfit Messiness presents their highly anticipated debut 'Messiness' album, released via Vienna-based StoneFree Records and Istanbul-based Tarla Records. A collection that resists easy categorisation, this music is playful yet serious, critical yet hallucinatory. This is a record for disobedient nights, for cracked screens and seaside sunsets, and for listeners who suspect that, in disorder, there may also lie a different kind of clarity.

Here, Messiness presents a vibrant sonic supernova, delivering an exhilarating blend of indie rock riffs, baroque and power pop harmonies, and razor-sharp Britpop energy. Highlighted by the standout focus track 'Cómo Baja, Cómo Sube', this album masterfully captures a feeling of adventure and possibility that unites their seaside roots and humanity's cosmic future through dizzying psychedelia and high-velocity art-rock euphoria.

Steered by Sicilian polymath Max Raffa – singer, composer, multi-instrumentalist, writer and sociologist – Messiness is a psychedelic art-rock band born in the shadowy outskirts of Milan. A compelling culmination of his diverse artistic and academic pursuits, Raffa forged his unique sound playing in various rock 'n' roll bands while touring across Europe and the UK.

On stage, Raffa is joined by Rosario Lo Monaco (guitars), Filippo La Marca(keyboards, backing vocals), Giovanni Calella (bass), and Luca Anello (drums and percussion), expanding the studio vision into a dense, unpredictable, and immersive live experience.

With an inviting and energetic sound, Messiness masterfully weaves art pop, psychedelia and space rock into a distinctive and compelling style. With rich harmonies, this rich tapestry is both accessible and exhilaratingly vibrant, drawing from the finest traditions of British rock and continental flair.

Recorded entirely on analogue equipment, the album is a kaleidoscope of influences: psychedelic rock, Canterbury scene experimentation, Mediterranean folk traditions, space-funk grooves, and baroque pop. Guitars bleed into Mellotron swells, oud and shawm cut through saxophone blasts, while theremin and electronics haunt the edges of the mix. The result is a sound that is both grounded in history and untethered from time: at once classic and futuristic, earthy and celestial.

But Messiness is not only about sound - this album is also a work of social commentary. Its songs confront the contradictions of contemporary life: the pressure to optimise everything, the commodification of well-being, the collapse of solidarity, and the shifting borders of identity and belonging. Rather than offering manifestos, the band responds with atmosphere, irony, and dissonance, turning critique into music that drifts between satire and reverie.

Some of these compositions are biting and sardonic, exposing the rituals of productivity and the comforts that anaesthetise dissent. Others move toward dreamlike meditation, evoking Mediterranean coastlines where time loosens its grip and memory becomes indistinguishable from imagination. Throughout, Messiness' creativity thrives in the midst of contradictions rather than seeking to resolve them, essentially discovering intensity despite overload and beauty amidst collapse.

Messiness earlier shared four superb singles - 'Eternity Unbound', a feverish trippy explosion of sound that explores a shattered sense of time and self-identify; 'Fatally', a Britpop-hued track that delves into the harrowing reality of substance dependency; 'Feature With a Rapper', a biting critique of the music industry and creative legitimacy in the digital age; and the head-turning lead track 'Previous Life'.

Messiness' visual identity is curated by Istanbul-based artist Güneş Akyürek, whose imagery expands their world beyond sound, translating their intensity into colour, form and atmosphere. Sun-drenched memory against metropolitan nights, social critique against psychedelic drift, collapse against luminous renewal.

As of November 21, the 'Messiness' album is available from fine online music platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music and Bandcamp. The LP can be ordered on hand-numbered 12" black vinyl, limited to 200 pieces, while the 12" blue mirage vinyl is limited to 100 pieces, each of them including an inlay sheet and download card.

Messiness brings slick psychedelic 'Eternity Unbound', final single ahead of debut album

Psychedelic indie-rock outfit Messiness presents 'Eternity Unbound', an intense explosion of sound and the final single ahead of their highly anticipated debut album 'Messiness', slated for release on November 21 via Tarla Records and StoneFree Records.

Clocking in under four minutes, the music constantly shifts beneath the listener's feet, utilizing unconventional time signatures to create a dizzying, unstable rhythm. Masterfully fusing numerous genres and melodic scales in this trippy sonic journey, the lyrics explore a shattered sense of self, wrestling the feeling of being adrift as time relentlessly takes its toll on one's sense of who they are. This brief, thrilling psychedelic experience is both feverish and impossible to predict.

Messiness is the compelling culmination of Max Raffa's diverse artistic and academic pursuits. This Sicilian polymath – singer, composer, multi-instrumentalist, author, and sociologist – forged his unique sound across Europe. Having performed in rock 'n' roll bands across Europe and in bustling British port cities, his ethnographic research also profoundly influenced his musical outlook. His journey eventually led him to settle in the stark fringes of Milan, deep in the less glamorous parts of Italy's fashion hub.

Raffa is joined by Rosario Lo Monaco on guitars, Filippo La Marca on keyboards, Giovanni Calella on bass guitar, and Luca Anello on drums. With an inviting and energetic sound, Messiness masterfully weaves art poppsychedelia, and space rock into a distinctive and compelling rock style. Their rich harmonies are a vibrant tapestry, drawing from the finest traditions of British rock and continental flair, resulting in music that is both accessible and exhilaratingly vibrant.

"'Eternity Unbound' packs three and a half minutes with psychedelic fire. Verses in 5/4, choruses in 4/4, and a solo in 3/4 twist rhythm into constantly shifting patterns, keeping the ground in motion. This track fuses the jazzy edge of the Canterbury scene with Eastern Mediterranean tonalities, summoning the shadowy heat of West Coast mystique in a sun-scorched swirl of ritual, menace, and sensual incantation.," says Max Raffa.

"These lyrics wrestle with alienation, fractured identity, and the relentlessness of time, turning abstraction into something visceral. The result is a pocket-sized trip: feverish, disorienting, and impossible to pin down."

This single arrives on the trail of three stunning singles - 'Fatally', a Britpop-hued track that delves into the harrowing reality of substance dependency; 'Feature With a Rapper', a biting critique of the music industry and creative legitimacy in the digital age; and the head-turning debut single 'Previous Life'.

As of October 10, 'Eternity Unbound' is available from fine online music platforms, including Spotify and Apple Music and, as well as directly from the artist via Bandcamp.

Psychedelic-indie rock outfit Messiness shares infectious 'Feature With A Rapper' single

Psychedelic-tinged indie rockers Messiness present 'Feature With a Rapper', following their March debut single 'Previous Life'. This is the second taste of the band's first album, slated for release later this year via Tarla Records and StoneFree Records. Driven by a ferocious baritone sax riff, this is an electrifying fusion of hard psych rock and Mediterranean vibes, laced with a chaotic arsenal of folk instruments, flower-punk relics and aggressive old-school rap.

What starts as a tongue-in-cheek tale of an artist chasing industry clout unravels into a biting critique of creative legitimacy in the digital age. The track’s high-energy delivery mirrors the desperation of an independent musician, who is struggling to navigate a world where access trumps talent, and credibility is a commodity. Playful yet scathing, its explosive sound and razor-sharp irony make it both a wild ride and a ruthless industry takedown.

Revolving around Sicilian singer, composer, multi-instrumentalist, writer and sociologist Max Raffa, Messiness is the welcome result of his remarkable journey, carved through Europe’s cultural landscapes, from sun-bleached Balearic shores to British harbour towns, as Raffa performed in various rock’n’roll bands while conducting the ethnographic research that ultimately shaped his musical vision. Finally landing in Milan’s shadowy outskirts - in the gritty underbelly of Italy’s fashion capital.

Messiness also involves Rosario Lo Monaco on guitars, Filippo La Marca on keyboards, Giovanni Calella on bass guitar, and Luca Anello on drums. Creating accessible, vibrant feel-good indie rock with Britpop leanings, Messiness synthesizes elements of art pop, psychedelic and space rock, their harmonic styles amalgamating the best of British rock, Britpop and Southern European flavours.

In its absurdist circularity, 'Feature with a Rapper' transcends its narrative of industry frustration and becomes a broader indictment of neoliberal cultural economies, where creative legitimacy is both a commodity and a privilege.

"The industry, as depicted here, is a closed circuit, where legitimacy is not earned through talent alone but through prior recognition. This dilemma is exacerbated by the anonymous and decentralized nature of digital platforms; the question “Who are you?” is not simply an expression of unfamiliarity but an existential challenge to artistic worth. In an era where visibility is currency, those without prior capital are functionally non-existent," says Max Raffa.

The protagonist’s journey—from naively seeking validation through established figures to cynically circumventing the process through royalty-free loopholes—mirrors the contemporary artist’s existential dilemma: to play by the rules is to remain invisible, but to cheat the system is to risk exposure as inauthentic. Messiness delivers this critique not with heavy-handed indignation but with a biting, self-aware irony that makes the song as humorous as it is damning. This is ultimately a manifesto of disillusionment—an acknowledgment that, in an industry where credibility is dictated by association, authenticity itself becomes a construct.

As of May 9, 'Feature With a Rapper' is available from fine online music platforms, including SpotifyApple Music and directly from the artist via Bandcamp.

Messiness shares indie rock gem 'Previous Life', a psychedelic reconstruction of the past

Psychedelic-tinged indie rockers Messiness present their debut single 'Previous Life' - an upbeat sonic reflection on alienation, sensory excess, and the paradox of nostalgia. At its heart, the song articulates an existential crisis in which the self seeks refuge in an imagined past that is not so much remembered as it is constructed. This is the first taste of the band's first album, slated for release later this year via Tarla Records and StoneFree Records. 'Previous Life' imbues psychedelic indie rock with a raw, rebellious exploration of life.

Finally landing in Milan’s shadowy outskirts - in the gritty underbelly of Italy’s fashion capital - Raffa assembled a proper motley crew: Rosario Lo Monaco wielding guitars, Filippo La Marca manning the keys, Giovanni Calella thumping the bass, and Luca Anello keeping the beat.

"This “Previous Life” is not a site of historical retrieval but a metaphysical counterpoint to the suffocating present—a liminal space where agency dissolves, aspirations are rendered obsolete, and structure itself is negated. The song thus stages a dialectic between presence and absence, reality and myth, in which the very act of longing for another life exposes the impossibility of its attainment," explains Max Raffa.

"'Previous Life' is not merely a reflection on nostalgia; it is an interrogation of nostalgia’s internal contradictions. The song exposes the futility of retreating into an imagined past, revealing that such a past is, by definition, uninhabitable. The impulse to escape is simultaneously an acknowledgment of entrapment—the longing for a life beyond structure, obligation, and meaning ultimately leads not to liberation but to negation."

Messiness creates accessible, vibrant feel-good indie rock with Britpop leanings. Incorporating elements of art pop, psychedelic and space rock elements, their harmonic styles bring Canterbury scene experimentation together with Southern European flavours, drawing from both traditional and urban soundscapes.

In 'Previous Life', the repetition of “I’m making plans for my previous life” serves as both a mantra and a lament. The author clings to the idea of a different, freer existence, but the sheer act of making plans—a forward-looking action—ironically contradicts the notion of a previous life. Max Raffa notes, "This contradiction reinforces the song’s central theme: the longing for a life beyond structure, obligation, and meaning ultimately leads not to liberation but to negation; the search for meaning often leads to its undoing, and the past we construct as a refuge is, in the end, an illusion."

As of March 14, 'Previous Life' will be available from fine online music platforms, including SpotifyApple Music and directly from the artist via Bandcamp.
