SARCATOR Shreds with Two New Guitar Play-Throughs, Kicks Off EU Tour + Festival Run This Week

Swedish trash metal newcomers SARCATOR are now unleashing two freshly recorded guitar playthroughs for “The Deep Ends” as well as “Burning Choir," which are both taken from the band's recently released third studio album, 'Swarming Angels and Flies.' Both played by guitarist Mateo Tervonen and recorded at Studio-MT in Sweden, the playthroughs showcase the guitarist’s strong technicality and the band’s talent for both shredding and songwriting.

The playthrough for “The Deep Ends” can be found Below.

Watch the playthrough for “Burning Choir” HERE.

'Swarming Angels & Flies' was released in January 2025 via Century Media Records and can be streamed, ordered, and downloaded HERE.

In addition, SARCATOR will be conquering Europe on an extensive run of live performances starting tomorrow, May 8, where they will first support 1349 on their “The Wolf & The King Eastern European Tour," alongside The Ruins Of Beverast and label-mates Vitriol. Additionally, the thrashers have various festivals lined up for 2025 across Europe, starting in June. The quartet will also be supporting Yoth Iria during their shows in Germany and Poland. The full itinerary can be found below while tickets can be found HERE.

More shows TBA soon... stay tuned!

At a juvenile age of 14-20, Sarcator released their first demo tape, “Visions of Purgatory”, via the American label Redefining Darkness Records in 2019. Just two years later the quadrumvirate got nominated for best rock/metal album for the Swedish music award P3 Guld with their 2020’s self-titled debut release for the same label. After releasing their 2nd album, “Alkahest”, via Black Lion Records in 2022, Sarcator finally got a proper chance to play live, captivating crowds with their intense, blackened live shows.

With their current line-up fully committed to the band despite their young age (all members are between 19 and 25) it was time for them to record their third album, which still features previous guitarist Emil Eriksson. Shortly after signing a new worldwide deal with Century Media Records and heading out on a debut European tour supporting Hellripper and Cloak, Sarcator will be releasing 'Swarming Angels & Flies' on January 17, 2025.

This album marks the most intense, brutal and rawest creation yet for the band. It is a remarkably mature and sophisticated piece of work, from mercurial musicians who are only in their early 20’s, and still at the beginning of their creative journey. Across eight, grotesque and utterly venomous tracks, Sarcator have deftly blended the wide-eyed extremity of their debut album with the inspirational musicality of their second record “Alkahest”, while playing everything with more intensity than ever before. Both deliriously melodic and mercilessly brutal: “Swarming Angels & Flies” is the most dangerously potent record the Swedens have made to date.

Sarcator explains about the record and its creation process, “We wanted to highlight the most aggressive and extreme parts of us, but we still wanted to work with dynamics, so you still have elements of classic rock and post-punk, which we started experimenting with on the last record. There is no question that it’s our most intense, brutal, and rawest creation yet - It's not really a genre album and we like to keep it that way."

With plenty of live activity in support of the upcoming album, Sarcator are already at the forefront of an emergent, highly determined new generation of Scandinavian extreme metal bands and ready to take the rest of the world by storm soon too.

Wrath of Logarius Enter the Void on New Single

Much like their Bloodborne namesake, Wrath of Logarius are impossible to predict. But no matter what skeletal form they assume, their upcoming debut album, Crown of Mortis, pronounces them as the unflinching kings of black metal's formless new realm.

Watch the mind-melding playthrough for new single "Of the Void" below.

After emerging from the misty forests of Northern California four years ago, Wrath of Logarius spread through the world of underground metal like a bloodborne virus. "...a ferocious display of intent which signifies the band's potential to become a powerhouse", New Noise wrote about the band's burning introduction.

Many hunters would've reaped their rewards while resting their bones, but Crown of Mortis only builds on the band's growing lore. The album's first single summoned all the bloody runes from the band's formless spellbook. Now armed with newly minted Strega guitars, Wrath of Logarius cycle through the many moonlit phases of black metal on "Of the Void".

New bassist Xolotl opens the icy procession with dissonant bass chugs, as if marching toward death. Like a howling wind, Vastator whips across a darkened stretch of classic tremolo picking, only to climb like mist through a solo that drips with despair.

"Open the gates and let revision in", Noctifier screams before being engulfed by the blistering flames from Lord Marco's blast beats. "Slowly dismantle every part of you".

On "Of the Void", Wrath of Logarius usher black metal into a boundless new realm.

For this playthrough, Wrath of Logarius used Strega Master Elite series Lamia 7s loaded with custom Arcana Glaive Pickups.

On Crown of Mortis, Wrath of Logarius bend black metal to fit their formless rule.

Black Lava Reign Supreme on New Guitar Playthrough

"Perhaps the best thing to come out of Australia since the Bloomin' Onion" - Metal Injection

"Familiar yet undeniably creative, heavy and a clear statement in the darkness of music" - Metal Roos

"A fantastic album...wrapped up in a package that is so tight, you couldn't squeeze in between the layers if you were as thin as paper." - Metal Temple

"Black Lava scrachtes a particular itch when you need music that is heavy, groovy and gritty" - Metal Epidemic

"Riff after riff, chug after chug, these songs bleed with strength and perseverance" - Monuments in Ruin

On their new album, Black Lava summon another perfect storm. The Savage Winds to Wisdom swirls together eerie blackened countermelodies and hexing prog with a heavy load of old-school headbanging. The riffs on "Dark Legacy" loom large, casting a fiery shadow over the kingdom of metal that warns of the band's growing legend.

“We sharpened our tools with this album”, Black Lava says. “We went a little more brutal and that sets the tone for where we’ll head in the future".

Watch the guitar playthrough for "Dark Legacy" below.

Black Lava erupted out of Australia's metal scene during the first trying year of the pandemic. But the band came together with all the ease of a natural stream. All four members have crossed paths around the various corners of the Melbourne underground. Guitarist Ben Boyle also shreds alongside bassist Nick Rackham in Hadal Maw and A Million Dead Birds Laughing.

Their potent alchemy is the skeleton key that unlocks "Dark Legacy". With the tap of his fingers, Boyle casts a menacing spell from gloomy minor chord dissonance and technical wizardry. Though it's Rackham's monstrous bass groove that hits like a spear straight through the heart.

“We took greater care with compositions on The Savage Winds to Wisdom”, Boyle says. “There’s more depth and layering to the riffs and melodies. By calling on a broader list of inspirations and tones, the album has a real sense of balance, a certain quality that will lend itself to repeat listens and attention to detail, while still staying true to what we set out to do with Black Lava; create heavy, energetic and catchy tunes that emanate a sense of atmosphere and power for the listener.”

The guitar playthrough of "Dark Legacy" was shot at Bushido Studios. It was filmed, edited and coloured by Black Lava's drummer Dan Presland.

Like any good sorcerer, Black Lava cast a wicked array of spells. Dan Presland, Ben Boyle and Rob Watkins treated Outburn magazine to a list of the band's potent influences and most punishing songs.

ANCIIENTS Shred Through "Cloak of the Vast and Black"

JUNO Award winners return with heavy and heartfelt Beyond the Reach of the Sun

"Big, melodic and fun" - New Noise
"A blend of soothing acoustic rock melodies and crushing heavy metal" - Guitar World

"It's exciting stuff, really - often complicated without seeming excessive, skillful but soulful, approachable but not pedestrian" - Pitchfork

"Heady stuff...arch-synthesists, cleverly appropriating a number of familiar, inter-related genres to fuse into a seamless ethos" - Metal Injection

"Proggy, sludgy and downright rocking" - Angry Metal Guy

"When the riffs rumble out of the speakers, you're moving" - No Clean Singing

"Combining powerful drumming with Thin Lizzy inspired riffs, while sounding like the musical equivalent of Game of Thrones" - Echoes and Dust

"Parts progressive finesse, classic rock grandstanding and grass-roots bludgeon" - PopMatters

The rock 'n' roll landscape is still shaking from the news: after eight years of searching, Anciients have emerged from the Canadian wilderness. The heady and hearty Canucks recently announced Beyond the Reach of the Sun, their first album since winning the coveted JUNO Award for Metal/Hard Rock.

Today, Kenny Cook, Mike Hannay and their new cast of shredders are releasing a smooth but still positively crushing guitar playthrough for their new album's second single. "Cloak of the Vast and Black" sheds light on the darkness that nearly overshadowed Beyond the Reach of the Sun by blazing a new trail with the same spirit that's made them a guiding light for progressive metal.

Watch the guitar playthrough for "Cloak of the Vast and Black" below.

Beyond the Reach of the Sun comes out August 30, 2024 on Season of Mist.

Ask any hard rock enthusiast about Anciients and their shock and awe might lead you to believe they were describing Big Foot. The band left a sizable imprint on the scene after just two albums, but then seemingly disappeared without a trace. So what led them to go into hibernation?

"Basically, right after Voice of the Void was recorded my wife had our first kid", says Kenny Cook, who on top of vocal and guitar duties also handles the bulk of the band's songwriting. "She ended up having heart complications and almost died". Everyone is happy and healthy now, but caring for his wife and new baby put a lot of stress on the typically laid-back frontman's mountainous shoulders. "It was a bit of a road".

"Cloak of the Vast and Black" also comes out of the shadows. The first single from Beyond the Reach of the Sun began by leading us through a field of bright keys and folksy acoustic plucks, but this time around, the guitars are so dimmed with reverb that even the leads twist and turn as if trying to navigate maze-like cave tunnels.

"This song is about mental illness and living under the cloak of depression", Cook says. But despite the many bumps in the road over the last eight years, like the high beams of a monster truck, Anciients found a way to come barreling out of the darkness. Just as the playthrough video bursts into full-blown color, the band strike upon a riff that burns as fast as a stick of dynamite.

"Searching for a new way of life", Cook growls with renewed force, as if awoken by the sudden explosion of psychedelic power chords.

The concept behind Beyond the Reach of the Sun does venture into heady territory. Society is enslaved by forces from another dimension who are so towering in their tyranny that they blot out the sun. Still, at its core, Anciient's third album is about perseverance. Cook's road is a little easier to envision. "Working on these songs helped clear the negativity that had clouded my thoughts", he says. But the albums' narrative arc winds up floating in the same enlightened headspace.

"Ancient knowledge buried deep in the sands of time", Cook sings, practically beaming as Dead Quiet axeman Brock MacInnes shreds a dizzying alternate guitar lead right beside him. "Awake on the other side".

Of course, headbanging helped, but Cook credits his bandmates for helping him see through Beyond the Reach of the Sun. Mike Hannay can still kick down the door to any metalhead's mind with a well-timed blast beat, but by the time "Cloak of the Vast and Black" finally tapers off, he's locked into such a massive flow state with new bassist Rory O'Brien, that Anciients sound like pre-historic giants who've returned to roam the earth.

"The hiatus is over" Cook says. "We missed out on a huge block after the last record. But with a new album to go along with our new band members, we're ready to hit it hard".

"...you can hear a delicately strummed acoustic guitar here, a traditional flute there. Avant Garde Black Metal Band HENGET Shares Guitar Play-Through for "I Am Them"

Guitarist Jesse J. Heikkinen (The Abbey, Iterum Nata) and vocalist King Aleijster de Satan (King Satan, Saturnian Mist) have teamed up for a mind-bending progressive black metal project, HENGET. The emerging Finnish band is now sharing a guitar play-through for the recent single, "I Am Them," which can be found below.

HENGET guitarist Jesse J. Heikkinen comments, "Sauna, the holiest man-made temple. The place where Finns used to enter and exit life. Nowadays, it can also mark a place where instructional videos, such as this, are made. Prepare your kantele, let the spirit of Löyly embrace you and be ready to shred like a 21st century Väinämöinen!"

Drawing inspiration from the world of occult and the ways of ancient Shamanism, 'Beyond North Star' depicts a violent hallucinatory journey to the depths of the mind and beyond with a psychedelic outlook.

The original music video for "I Am Them" can be found HERE.

HENGET will be debuting its first full-length, 'Beyond North Star,' on May 18, 2023 via Season of Mist!

Pre-orders are now available HERE. The album can be pre-saved on various digital platforms HERE.

The creation process has always been a very fascinating riddle isn’t it? After all, there’s no strict formula. Some spent weeks, months or even years meticulously working on every tiny detail over and over again until it feels perfect while others just have to let it all out, no matter how it all comes out, it just has to. And no, no matter how hard you try, you can’t force it. You just can’t. You need to have that vision, that unstoppable yearning to turn your dreams into reality.

King Aleijster de Satan has long stopped asking himself all those questions. Although he’s only thirty-four years old, the Tampere based Finn is a bullet-proof veteran of the black metal scene: he used to run and sign bands for Saturnal Records. He also ran the Blackvox studio from 2013 to 2020 where he recorded multiple bands. Purely on the musical front, besides being the long-time standing frontman of Saturnian Mist he also because various experiences, in Arvet among others. But with the industrial rumblings of King Satan, he’s learnt to expand his mind and look over all those useless fences to see what lied beyond. In the end, it’s all about being free both as an individual and as an artist, to go where your instincts and muse take you, no matter what.

And nothing encapsulates more this quest for freedom than HENGET. As a matter of fact, it lies at the very center of it as most of the music AND lyrics were on purpose improvised on the spot. Ever tried to capture lightning in a bottle? King Aleijster de Satan and his comrade Jesse Heikkinen just did with HENGET first album, Beyond North Star, Heikkinen having proved to be quite a versatile artist since dabbling with ‘progressive esoteric folk’ with Iterum Nata, the equally ‘out there’ Hexvessel or The Abbey.

“When I got in the studio to do the vocals, I only had various notes, sometimes hastily written on a small piece of paper and more or less some kind of loose structures to go with it. Most of them I gathered in between 2016 and 2019 after, let’s say experimenting quite a bit. I admit natural psychedelics and other shamanic methods influenced me a lot to reach another level of consciousness, besides my long interest towards the occult and mysticism. Those weren’t meant to get lost into but instead to be used as mere tools to help me opening new doors in my brain, a bit like a shaman would do when engaged in a ritual to reach a trance like of state. That’s also why I booked a two weeks session just for the vocals: I needed that amount of space to really dive in my subconscious. Overall, that was one of most intense recording experience I ever had but I wouldn’t recommend it to everyone because the toll you have to pay once it’s done is pretty heavy.”

Originally, the pair planned to unite in Saturnian Mist but then, Jesse “had to move to another city and it made things too complicated. But we still wanted to work together as he is probably the best songwriter I know. And since I had this idea for this other thing where I knew I wanted to push the limits and go over the edge in terms of songwriting, I needed somebody of his calibre.” “Indeed, Aleijster approached during summer 2021” confirms the multi-instrumentist. “He had a quite clear vision of what kind of concept he wanted to do lyrically speaking for a long time. It did coincide with my own desire to express something personal yet aggressively, an urge I hadn’t felt in a long time. Based on his background, we agreed this should happen within some kind of black metal frame but without still paying attention to much conventions or rules. I was given free rein to do whatever I felt like and I quickly realized I wanted it to be quite intuitive while making sure the music would be as crazy as possible, like some typhoon swallowing everything in its path… So using mostly vintage instrumentation, I recorded most of the music by myself in my own studio, pushing the button ‘rec’ and then totally letting myself go, following Aleijster ‘automatic writing’ method and ending up with some pretty interesting result.”

There’s something strangely seductive about the eight tracks included on Beyond North Star, as if the listeners were invited to enter some alternative and colourful place, dangerous and scary yet always otherworldly. Some may argue that all along you will most likely cross there the ghosts of Dødheimsgård, Arcturus or King Crimson. But Aleijster remains pretty reluctant to label it but “if we really need to, I guess it’s avant-garde black metal.” After hesitating with Henkivallat (‘spiritual realms’), which they ended up using as a songtitle instead, the name HENGET was chosen because of its double meaning as it can be translated both as ‘life’ but also ‘spirits’, “a perfect name for an occult band”. Beyond North Star is a “loose” concept album, like one long journey, even if the songs are not exactly tied up together. Something the 70’s prog rock loving Jesse is quite happy with while its title is a reference to that actual spiritual journey the listeners are about to undertake. One they will never forget.

Three ambitious music videos in total have been shot already to promote the album and HENGET has gathered a full line-up in order to start playing live. Saturnian Mist drummer Ville Rissanen was the first one to be asked, soon followed by Lasse Launimaa, a teenage years friend of Jesse who also plays in cult symphonic black metal band Thyrane on keyboards.

STEVIE D Unveils Tribute to JEFF BECK with Guitar Play-Through of "Cause We’ve Ended as Lovers"!

Producer and multi-instrumentalist songwriter STEVIE D(Stephen DeAcutis) has revealed his official guitar play-through music video for his incredible tribute to the late JEFF BECK, "Cause We’ve Ended as Lovers," featuring Nir Z on drums and Jack Daley on bass.

"I recorded 'Cause We’ve Ended as Lover’s' about 2 years ago but, for whatever reason, hadn’t had it on my list of things to mix! I knew it was going to get done but I just had not scheduled the session! When Jeff passed recently, it was painfully obvious that it was time and I literally the day he passed pulled up the tracks and started mixing the song and did not stop till I started to tear up. Then I knew it was done! One pretty cool note about this recording, I actually made a tempo map from the original Blow by Blow release best that I could! If you listen close you can hear how the tempo ramped up as the track matured!" - STEVIE D

Stephen DeAcutis Aka Stevie D (born October 9, 1961) is the owner operator of Sound Spa Productions and Recording Studio in Edison, NJ where he has been Producing and mixing records for the better part of 3 decades.
Stevie D is best known for his recording expertise but has also participated as a multi-instrumentalist on many of the releases that have come out of Sound Spa as well as his own including the 2019 release with Living Colour Front man Corey Glover “Torn from the Pages” DeAcutis wrote all of the songs on the record as well as playing all the guitar, produced, mixed and mastered.

Stevie D began his fascination with recording when his parents bought him a Norelco cassette player for Christmas as a very young man and began recording prank phone calls thus he could be stated that he is the original jerky boy! At that same time his father who was a a stereo enthusiast set up a very elaborate stereo system that Stevie D quickly turned into a make shift recording set up! At around this time he started playing drums, bass then finally guitar!

In the early 80’s Stevie D took a job as head engineer at Venture Sound in Somerville NJ, a 24-track studio working for Tony Camillo a very successful arranger, producer responsible for such hits as Midnight Train To Georgie, Band Of Gold, and many more. DeAcutis would go on to work with many notable artists with Camillo, Cyndi Lauper, LJ Reynolds, and Franke Previteto name a few.

At that time he was engineering full time and running his own band which signed a production deal with Columbia Records and Ron Piccolo the head of PR at Columbia who broke the first Boston record.

In the mid 90’s DeAcutis would sign a major record deal with Sony/Colombiawith his band POD working with legendary A&R guru John Kolodner. After the record got shelved DeAcutis would build Sound Spa and has been thriving as a Producer, Mixer, and Multi-Instrumentalist since the late 90’s to the present day!

These days DeAcutis is mainly working on and releasing his own material and also taking on aspiring and established artists to produce and co-write with!
On top of that he has become one of the more acclaimed and respected guitarists in music today. Visit www.soundspa.net for more information

BLACK ORCHID EMPIRE Shares Guitar Play-Through for "Deny the Sun"

Progressive rock trio BLACK ORCHID EMPIRE will be releasing a brand new full-length, 'Tempus Veritas,' on April 14, 2023! The band is now sharing an official guitar play-through for the freshly released single, "Deny the Sun!" The clip is available below.

Meanwhile, the previously released song can be found along with an official music video, which was created by Alina Gordienco, at THIS LOCATION.

Guitarist Paul Visser comments on the video: "We’re so stoked about the love everyone’s been showing for 'Deny The Sun!' We hope the guitarists out there are enjoying the riff - it was the first thing I wrote on the red Solar you see in this play-through. Big thanks to both Solar and Nueral DSP for being awesome!"

Pre-orders are now available HERE. The album can be pre-saved on various digital platforms HERE.

BLACK ORCHID EMPIRE create huge, memorable rock music that combines heavy-hitting savagery with intense melodic beauty. Their technical, fearlessly complex grooves and gigantic sing-along choruses have already earned them a widespread fanbase.

A ferociously tight live band, BLACK ORCHID EMPIRE have toured Europe and the UK extensively, supporting Skunk Anansie, HED p.e, INME and Black Map as well as festival slots at Download, Standon Calling and Planet Rockstock. Black Orchid Empire have sealed the bands reputation as a force to be reckoned with.

Having released their debut album ‘Archetype’ (2016) to universal acclaim, BLACK ORCHID EMPIRE signed with German label Long Branch Records to release the follow up albums ‘Yugen’ (2018) and ‘Semaphore’ (2020). Both albums received stellar reviews and over 3,000,000+ combined streams.

“Tempus Veritas” is a collection of stories that seeks to find compelling imaginary narratives hidden away in what we all think of as history.  Behind every milestone or major event in humanity’s long, complex past lies a treasure trove of possibilities for invention - how did Pope Urban VIII feel when confronted by his friend Galileo about the true nature of the sun?  What really happened during an almost triumphant but ultimately doomed Everest attempt? What was it like to be a Norse settler amongst the Saxons; did the omens of the ancient gods begin to disappear?

In approaching “Tempus Veritas”, BLACK ORCHID EMPIRE sought collectively to push themselves both musically and thematically. Their pursuit of heaviness, melody, emotional power and rhythmic complexity has pushed them to create something they‘re immensely proud of. “Semaphore” was an album of Sci-Fi, this is an album of Hi-Fi. Tempus Veritas.

About MØL:
Aarhus (DK) based MØL blend swirling guitars and hissing vocals with the dreamy ambience of shoegaze to form a unique blend of soundscapes and crushing passages. Inspired by bands like My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Drop Nineteens, Lantlôs and Alcest, MØL released their self-titled debut EP back in 2014.A year later, the band had perfected their sound on their second EP II, produced by Jacob Bredahland released in 2015. Both EPs were very well received and drove them on to do some empathic liveshows, which were praised by press and helped establishing a dedicated audience. In 2018, MØL made an international breakthrough signing with Holy Roar Records (UK) who released their debut album JORD to critical acclaim. Recorded at Grapehouse Studios and mixed and mastered by Chris Kreutzfeldt, JORD gained massive media acclaim turning MØL into one of the most talked about Danish metal newcomers in recent years. The album was also released as an instrumental version and in 2019, the band re-released their two first EPs, remastered for CD and vinyl. On November 5th, 2021, MØL released their second studio album, DIORAMA, the group’s first for Nuclear Blast Records. Recorded and mixed by Tue Madsen (Gojira, Meshuggah, Heaven Shall Burn), the band has successfully developed its captivating, aggressive sound even further. Now, one year later after the succesful release of DIORAMA the band is back with their new instrumental version of their second album!

CYNIC Unveils Guitar Play-Through for "Aurora," Announces Signature Strandberg Guitar

CYNIC guitarist Paul Masvidal is now unveiling a brand new play-through for the song "Aurora," which is taken from the band's critically acclaimed 2021 full-length, 'Ascension Codes.' The clip can be found below.

The play-through is being released in conjunction with the launch of Masvidal's new signature Strandberg guitar, the Masvidalien NX 6 Cosmo!

One of the most unique iterations of the heralded Boden lineup, the original Boden Masvidalien Cosmo Edition quickly became a favorite amongst not only Cynic and Paul Masvidal fans, but guitar players who sought something different which stood out from the crowd – both aesthetically and sonically. The Masvidalien NX 6 Cosmo retains all of the great features of the Masvidalien Cosmo while adding the new NX features to provide the latest in .strandberg* innovations.

The Masvidalien NX 6 Cosmo features chambered Swamp Ash body with a Maple top for a superbly balanced and punchy sound and an open pore Poplar Burl veneer top for a dramatic and unique finish, quartersawn Maple neck with Richlite fretboard accented with his trademark Masvidalien inlay across the fretboard. The new .strandberg* EGS Rev 7 hardware, new neck-heel and arm bevel carves, and Venture Gig Bag round out the updates which increase the instrument’s functionality, playing comfort, and overall value.

More information on the model can be found HERE.

In addition, CYNIC will be digitally releasing a fully instrumental version of 'Ascension Codes' via Bandcamp! Cynic is offering an instrumental mix of the track 'Aurora' as a free download when pre-ordering the album via the Cynic-alliance Bandcamp page. The album will be streaming on all digital outlets October 7, 2022! Pre-order it now at THIS LOCATION.

Moreover, guitar players can find the full guitar transcriptions for several of CYNIC's albums via Sheet Happens at THIS LOCATION.

CYNIC's latest release Ascension Codes is a remarkably far-reaching work, and if nothing else, a clear indication that they have landed in a place of mastery. The album, paradoxically, acts as both swan song and rebirth.

'Ascension Codes' can be ordered at the Season of Mist E-Shop, the CYNIC Bandcamp, and official CYNIC shop. The album can be streamed/downloaded HERE.

Cynic’s continual state of development has met its share of challenges over the years, hurdles that threatened to dismantle the entity’s forward surge. Yet through hurricanes, breakups, and assorted acrimony both personal and existential, it remains inspired to create.

Their name is synonymous with what it means to be truly progressive in music. Cynic’s top-tier performance acumen and cerebral/spiritual/yogic themes finds them inhabiting a corner of the musical spectrum all their own. Their Venn diagram shows intersections with death metal, prog rock, thrash metal, experimental, new age, jazz fusion, and a myriad of other sonic expressions.

Debut album, Focus (1993), is a certified classic. Although that era ended with transformation into the short-lived Portal, and then a further splinter toward Aeon Spoke, Cynic’s reunion-era has found them embraced in a way that proves how ahead of the times they were in the ‘90s. Through monuments such as the Traced in Air (2008) and Kindly Bent to Free Us (2014) albums, the Carbon-Based Anatomy and Re-Traced EPs, and a surprising rebirth with the “Humanoid” single of 2018, the Cynic legacy remains untarnished. Yet early in the creation cycle for their fourth full-length album, they experienced horrible events that tested the entity’s resolve.

Ascension

The year 2020 will go down in history as a tremendously difficult time for the global human population. For the Cynic family, the struggle was not restricted to a pandemic. It was two utterly senseless losses that threw the band’s immediate concerns into the background: the premature deaths of drummer Sean Reinert in January, at age 48, and bassist Sean Malone in December, at age 50, were shocking and unthinkable.

Reinert, a founding Cynic member since formation in 1988, was highly influential to a multitude of young drummers. His work on 1993’s Focus and Death’s watershed 1991 album, Human, found him sculpting extreme technical metal with a jazz fusion-inspired approach. Now taken for granted, that approach to the instrument and the genre was undoubtedly pioneered in large part by Reinert. Though parting with Cynic in 2015, his imprint on Cynic is inescapable.

The death of Sean Malone dealt another horrible layer of tragedy to Cynic’s 2020. In his many years with the band, Malone’s virtuoso playing meshed intuitively with Reinert’s. Together they formed a nucleus of kinetic, highly capable rhythmic dexterity that fueled Cynic’s celestial aims.

One of these deaths would have seemed unimaginable by itself. Both of them, in the same year, nearly broke surviving member Paul Masvidal. But the seeds of a fourth Cynic full- length existed long before the deaths, and the guitarist, through a haze of grief and disbelief, pushed forward. “I wanted to make this record right after Kindly Bent to Free Us,” says Masvidal. “I was raring to go, hyper-creative, in this total flow state. And then it all imploded.”

Parts of songs were in the gestation process as early as 2014. Masvidal says that Reinert and Malone heard elements of what ended up on the fourth album. Slowly, methodically, and with much careful deliberation, Masvidal eventually completed an album titled Ascension Codes, to honor the memory of his fallen band mates. And while the album honors the lives and contributions of Reinert and Malone, it also pushes Cynic forward for its own sake and through its own will to live. The album, paradoxically, acts as both swan song and rebirth. It is, throughout its 49 minutes, a vivid and highly cosmic journey into the very core of every impulse this band has ever explored.

Offering

As of 2021, the future of Cynic is unclear. Does Ascension Codes mark their final phase of growth? Surely the music finds them laying out a most ambitious trail of spiritual sonic travel, but to call any Cynic album “ambitious” is redundant. They are, by their very nature, an ambitious band. Yet Ascension Codes is a remarkably far-reaching work. Its nine main songs are infused with explosions of color and energy, and throughout these compositions are embedded the “codes”: “Mu-54*,” “A’-va432,” “Ha-144” and so on.

Though clearly an album best listened to in its entirety without distraction, for full impact, there are definitive Cynic songs here that stand strong on their own. “Mythical Serpents” is imbued with propellant adventure, exciting peaks and valleys that tug at the heart while its mathematical sequences challenge the head in a dizzying push/pull dynamic. It’s that quintessential Cynic approach of kaleidoscopic intensity and mannered discipline.

“Diamond Light Body” brings the album to a crashing close – heavy and celestial, with some melodic sequences that feel like new territory for Cynic. An incredibly dense song with inhuman patterns from Lynch, the song’s beautiful urgency and final moments push the album outward into the heavens: “I won't feed the fear / I’ll choose a different timeline / Ascend / All is flux, nothing stands still / Ascend.”

The expanded Cynic collective maintains focus on Masvidal’s vision, each human element adding to the compelling overall result. Truly, if this is to be the final artistic stroke by Cynic, then they have landed in a place of mastery. The stories told by Focus, Traced in Air, and Kindly Bent to Free Us are now completed with Ascension Codes.

Ascension Codes is perhaps the most ethereal sounding Cynic album to date, but also skews heavier than previous album Kindly Bent to Free Us. The expanded lineup is surely responsible for the album’s far-reaching scope.

After Sean Reinert’s exit from Cynic in 2015, Masvidal and Malone recruited drummer Matt Lynch. Found through a tip from Between the Buried and Me’s Dan Briggs, Lynch proved to be a perfect addition to the band. As Masvidal notes, Lynch’s “hybrid modern style is like a fusion of drum and bass electronic music influences combined with modern jazz/prog approaches. Lynch is a true original in that he's a fully realized drummer constructing his parts as carefully as any other compositional element always is on a Cynic record. Every single accent and note coming from him is birthed from a precise and inspired place.” We hear this throughout Ascension Codes, pushing the music along with finesse, adding shape and texture in ways only the most sensitive drummers can do.

But how to replace Sean Malone on bass? Masvidal’s answer: don’t even try. The lines of bass notes heard throughout Ascension Codes are performed on bass synthesizer by keyboardist Dave Mackay. A British pianist, writer, producer and Moog/vintage synth enthusiast, Mackay has toured with everyone from Art Garfunkel to Plini (the latter providing the initial introduction between Mackay and Masvidal). Based in Los Angeles and London, Mackay’s work is sensitive to Malone’s touch, while also adding a throbbing intensity that offers Cynic new low-end possibilities. “He's got a vast jazz harmonic vocabulary,” notes Masvidal, “which is what's needed in the context of Cynic's music, especially for bass lines. I knew that I could never replace Malone. Anyone I would find would be expected to play like him, and that's not fair to another musician. And things were too fresh for me with the loss of Malone, so I had to go somewhere new. With Mackay, I heard his groovy left-hand approach, and how musical he was across the board having played with a variety of musicians and styles. I realized he would bring something fresh to the table, and he provided a space for me to start again with a completely different instrument and forgo any traditional ideas I had about what Cynic bass lines should sound like.

Ultimately Mackay delivered above and beyond, with a real awareness of a bass player's role in a progressive trio context. First, by holding down the harmony and being “in the pocket,” while also creating an independent and dynamic voice within that space. Mackay has a rare combination of skills and the vibe he locked into with Lynch with sounds like a rhythm section from the future. Plus, his Moog synth tone offers a low-end depth that’s never been heard in our recordings.” On December 5, 2019, Dave Mackay shared the stage with Paul Masvidal for a performance of the guitarist’s solo material. On bass that evening was Sean Malone. After the gig, Malone told Masvidal, “We should bring Mackay in for the new record.”

Michael Berberian, president and founder of Season of Mist Records remained close to Masvidal throughout the 2020 losses of his bandmates. Michael states “I have, by now, released close to one thousand albums. None have been more dramatic, none have even been more difficult than this one. I can’t listen to Ascension Codes without goosebumps, a mixed feeling of pride – because it’s a musical milestone, but it also contains a lingering layer of sadness. I hear Paul’s pain on this record. I can feel it, I can touch it. But it’s transcended. ‘Art is to console those who are broken by life,’ said Van Gogh. Here is a demonstration of that.”

Ascension Codes was mixed and co-produced by Warren Riker, who worked with Aeon Spoke, Cynic in the Traced in Air era, and mixed Paul Masvidal’s solo acoustic trilogy. “Riker’s a wizard who gets inside the music and commits. He expands boundaries as a mixer, always finding new ways to push the sonic envelope,” says Masvidal.

Keeping things in the family, Martina Hoffmann’s original painting entitled ‘The Landing’ graces Cynic's new album Ascension Codes with breathtaking scope and presence. The visionary work inspired by Martina's time walking the beaches of Brittany, France after the death of her longtime partner, the artist Robert Venosa (whose artwork adorns all Cynic releases between 1993 and 2018) followed by the loss of her mother, the subject of the piece features the arrival of a great mothership made of light and flesh, not machine but an organic entity that has brought hope and infinite possibilities. Masvidal says of Hoffmann, “Martina’s art has always held a special place in my heart, and I'm deeply grateful for her love and support. When I first contacted Venosa as a teenager, it was Martina who encouraged him to lend his work to the band, because she heard something in our music. She is like the divine mother in this Cynic/ Venosa lineage," Masvidal says. "Her spirit and multidimensional talents are truly a gift to this world. I feel that she is one of the great artistic voices of our age."

The struggle to attain ascension is as important as ascension itself. And after much searching, Cynic have again achieved oneness with the numinous. At a time of possible exit for the entity, Ascension Codes is Cynic reaching a previously-unknown state of enlightenment.

Credits and Lineup:

With Masvidal, Lynch and Mackay at the core, Cynic utilized a variety of other artists to help achieve their vision for Ascension Codes, some of the key players include:

DARK (Roopam Garg) performs as “code worker” on the album, providing harmonic, harp-like guitar textures. DARK also known for his other works with “The Surrealist” is an experimental, ambient artist, pushing the avant-garde guitar envelope using extended techniques and consciousness inspired soundscapes.

Max Phelps contributes “holographic-reptilian-voices” on multiple tracks. Phelps toured with Cynic in the Carbon-Based Anatomy and Kindly Bent to Free Useras, and his own progressive metal band, Exist, have released music on Prosthetic Records. Phelps also took part in Death tribute band, Death to All.

Plini guest solos on “The Winged Ones.” Plini is an an Australian guitarist and composer, producing heart-fueled, progressive instrumental rock. He opened shows for Cynic in Japan, which happened to be their final live performances as a trio with Reinert/Malone.

Additional contributors:

Anrita Melchizedek is a renowned priestess, healer, galactic ambassador, among other pursuits, and provides vocals to the opening and closing code interludes (“Mu-54*” and “Ec-ka72”). Amy Correia and Joshua Leon vocalize light language and phrases on various code interludes. Amy appeared on Traced in Air and 2011’s Carbon-Based Anatomy EP,and plays with Masvidal in the Onward with Love (OwL) project. Michael Devin plays crystal bowls on some of the code interludes. Devin is also a bassist and has played with the Jason Bonham Led Zeppelin Evening, George Lynch, and Whitesnake. Ezekiel Kaplan contributed a vocal harmony to the final track “Diamond Light Body.”
