FEDERALE presents 'The Worst Thing I Ever Did Was Ever Loving You' feat. JENNY DON'T

“Equal parts Ennio Morricone, Lee Hazelwood, and Nick Cave with a touch of Chris Isaak’s less romantic side… few if any artists are brave and/or creative enough to channel this ghostly, often ominous vibe into moving, sensual and stirring music” ~ American Songwriter

"Their most immersive and varied album to date, Collin Hegna and his merry band of music-makers take us on a fantastic journey... and on ‘Heaven Forgive Me’, Hegna channels the post-punk vibes of such bands as The Church, Pink Turns Blue and The Mission to our delight" ~ The Spill Magazine

Portland's iconic outfit Federale presents their latest single 'The Worst Thing I Ever Did Was Ever Loving You' feat. Jenny Don't, a song cast in the mold of the storied duets of Lee Hazlewood & Nancy Sinatra. This superb duet is from Federale's sixth studio album 'Reverb & Seduction', newly released via Jealous Butcher Records. Led by Collin Hegna, a long-standing member of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, this record marks the band's 20th anniversary.

Set to a Beatles-inspired backbeat and adorned with period-correct strings and pedal steel, this song is an homage to the sounds of 1968. A time when psychedelia, country, rock, soul and crooners all started blending together to create a melange of genres that could only exist in that magical point in time. Except it exists now too thanks to Federale & Ameripolitan Music Awards-winning chanteuse Jenny Don’t of Jenny Don't and The Spurs.

Often in the Hazlewood-penned songs of the late 60s, Lee would write about a bedraggled yet loveable rogue that somewhat resembles himself but notably this character is always down on his luck. And the object of his affections simultaneously mocks him but can’t quite give him up. In Federale’s “The Worst Thing..” we find Jenny Don’t taking up the mantle of the femme fatale that’s just had enough of her loser worser half. Meanwhile, Federale’s Collin Hegna goes down a laundry list of all the bad things he’s done (and there’s plenty), but somehow the worst thing he ever did was falling in love. Not even his worst behaviour (involving booze, drugs, gambling, and winding up with a bloody nose from something or other) can rival his moral ineptitude in causing a good woman to fall for a bad man. But Jenny has had enough of his bragging and excuses. She knows the score and isn't afraid to let this loser know who’s won and who’s lost. And it ain’t her.

For over a dozen years, Jenny Don't and The Spurs has been known for their high-energy Country Western style and captivating stage presence, having garnered a global following with their infectious enthusiasm. Collin Hegna also happened to record and mix the band's latest record 'Broken Hearted Blue' (out now on Fluff & Gravy Records) at Revolver Studios in Portland.

Filmed entirely on 16mm Kodak 200t film, the video for 'The Worst Thing' was inspired by the amazing one-shot music videos of the late 60s that were seen on shows such as the Ed Sullivan Show and The Tonight Show. Often shot live with little to no editing, they often featured minimal sets and creative theatrical lighting. With the performers often lip-syncing to their pre-recorded material, it was up to the camera and the performer to bring the performance to life.

This video involved three takes straight through so that the singer's positions could be shifted for the various points of view being portrayed in the lyrics of the song. The only editing entailed cutting between takes to create this effect. Cinematographer Joe Bowden used the Eclair NPR 16mm camera, created in 1963 in France - revolutionary for its portability and noiseless design, and  a favorite of documentary and independent filmmakers of the 1960s and 70s. Shot in Portland, Oregon at Desert Island Studios, this is an authentic representation of how music videos were created in the era the song is set in.

'Reverb & Seduction' is a 10-track tour-de-force road trip from psych rock to country duets, never straying too far from the spaghetti western roots that inspired the band many blood-moons ago. What began as an homage to those cinematic soundscapes of the Italian 60s has evolved well past those not-so-humble beginnings, with Federale now also drawing from wide-ranging inspirations.

Federale has carved out a unique niche within the indie music landscape, blending their signature spaghetti-Western instrumental sound with moody vocal arrangements in the spirit of Lee Hazlewood and late-era Leonard Cohen. With a penchant for the darkly romantic, our narrator guides us through these stories in deep baritone.. Distorted guitars, mellotrons and 70s inspired string arrangements sit side by side with driving drum patterns and moaning pedal steel.

Recorded at Revolver Studios in Portland, this album was engineered by Collin Hegna, Matt Thomson and Andrew Joslyn, who boasts five 5 Grammy Award winning albums. Mixed by Hegna with Jeff Stuart Saltzman (The Black Keys, The High Violets) and Matt Thomson, it was mastered by Adam Gonsalves at Telegraph Mastering. The album also involves numerous Portland rock-scene vets, including talents from The Dandy Warhols, The Shivas, Roselit Bone, Rogue Wave and Delines.  Members of The Black Angels, Mission Spotlight and Courtney Barnett's Band, plus Grammy-nominated producer Hunter Lea (Nancy Sinatra / Lee Hazlewood reissues) and Andrew Joslyn (Nancy Wilson, Kei$ha, Macklemore, Mark Lanegan),

Maintaining a retro vibe, Federale's records have always sounded period-correct for an alternate-universe 1971, where rock and roll never caught on. Earlier, the band shared the singles 'Heaven Forgive Me', 'No Strangers' and 'Advice From A Stranger'.

'Reverb & Seduction' is out now everywhere digitally, including Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal and Band camp. Also released on CD and limited edition vinyl, the album available from fine record dealers and via Band camp.

FEDERALE marks 20 years of Alternative Spaghetti Western music on sixth album 'Reverb & Seduction' album. Catch their West Coast tour

Portland's iconic outfit Federale present their sixth studio album 'Reverb & Seduction' album, out July 12 via Jealous Butcher Records.  Led by Collin Hegna, Federale marks 20 years with this release. A member of The Brian Jonestown Massacre for equally as long, Hegna has been party to a lot of feedback & fuzzed out guitars in his time.

'Reverb & Seduction' is a 10-track tour-de-force road trip from psych rock to country duets, never straying too far from the spaghetti western roots that inspired the band many blood-moons ago. What began as an homage to those cinematic soundscapes of the Italian 60s has evolved well past those not-so-humble beginnings. Today's Federale draws from inspirations as wide ranging as Depeche Mode, Nick Cave, Lee Hazlewood and also, naturally, BJM.

The throughline in all these influences is a penchant for the darkly romantic. Our narrator guiding us through these stories delivers the news in deep baritone reflecting the gravitas of the song’s arrangements. Distorted guitars, mellotrons and 70s inspired string arrangements sit side by side with driving drum patterns and moaning pedal steel. This goat's head alphabet soup of inspirations mingles to create a sum stranger than the whole of its parts. A siren calls us in the night towards certain destruction, but its song is so beautiful we cannot resist.

These musical homages involve a lineup of well-known Portland rock-scene vets, including talents from The Dandy Warhols, The Shivas, Roselit Bone, Rogue Wave and Delines.  Members of The Black Angels, Jenny Don’t & The Spurs, Mission Spotlight and Courtney Barnett's band also contribute, as well as Grammy nominee Hunter Lea (Nancy Sinatra / Lee Hazlewood reissue producer) and Andrew Joslyn (Nancy Wilson, Kei$ha, Macklemore, Mark Lanegan)

“This album to me represents the culmination of 20 years of sonic exploration. With each record I’ve allowed a few more genres and musical influences into the playground. And with this, our 6th full length, I wanted to see how well they all played together at once. I was curious what happened when you crossed 80s deathrock with 70s folk balladeer stylings. Or 60s acid jams with string laden country crooning. It turns out it works pretty well,” says Collin Hegna.

"Before, I'd have an idea and think, 'Well, that can't be a Federale song', because it had distorted guitars or whatever. But then I thought, 'Well, why not?'"

This openness to a broader palette of influences allows 'Reverb & Seduction' to veer into psychedelic and even gothic territory - think Love and Rockets or Sisters of Mercy - that the 2010s Federale might have considered off limits. For instance, the album's first single 'Heaven Forgive Me' draws on Goblin (the Italian prog-rockers who scored 'Suspiria') and a little Depeche Mode, and the 'No Strangers'is a sonic tribute to Lee Hazlewood, while the third single 'Advice From A Stranger' borrows the fuzz and feedback of DIG!-era BJM and The Electric Prunes.

Beginning to color outside those Ennio Morricone lines, perhaps Hegna has finally decided to give his psych-rock alter ego a seat at the Federale table. For all these rumblings of change, 'Reverb & Seduction' is still very much a Federale record, and longtime fans will find plenty of the cinema-ready soundscapes they've come to expect.

Federale has carved out a unique niche within the indie music landscape, blending their signature spaghetti-Western instrumental sound with increasing doses of moody vocal arrangements in the spirit of Lee Hazlewood and late-period Leonard Cohen. Through it all, Hegna – as both songwriter and lead singer – maintains a strictly retro vibe. Federale's records have always sounded period-correct for an alternate-universe 1971, where rock and roll never caught on.

The film industry continues to take notice as well: The band's latest licensing successes include placing tracks in the trailer for the Colin Farrell / Brendan Gleeson vehicle 'Banshees Of Inisherin', as well as in the Kate Hudson thriller 'Mona Lisa & The Blood Moon' and Swiss action/comedy 'Mad Heidi'.

As of July 12, 'Reverb & Seduction' album will be everywhere digitally, including Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal and Band camp. It will also be released on CD and limited edition vinyl, available via the net and from fine record dealers.

Federale's 'Reverb & Seduction' tour, which takes them up and down the U.S. West coast and beyond, kicks off in Portland on July 12 with their album release show. A European tour is anticipated in late fall 2024.

FEDERALE presents psych-rock gem 'Advice From a Stranger', previewing 20-year anniversary album 'Reverb & Seduction'. West Coast tour kicks off July 12

Portland's iconic outfit Federale presents the single 'Advice From A Stranger', previewing their new 'Reverb & Seduction' album, set for release on July 12 via Jealous Butcher Records.

Their sixth studio album, this record marks the band’s twentieth anniversary.  Their most immersive and varied album to date, with do-it-all frontman Collin Hegna at the height of his powers, this is a tour-de-force road trip from psych rock to country duets, never straying too far from the spaghetti western roots that inspired the band many blood-moons ago.  These musical homages involve a new lineup of well-known Portland rock-scene vets, including talents from The Dandy Warhols, The Shivas, Roselit Bone, Rogue Wave and Delines.

On 'Advice From a Stranger', Federale leans into their psych-rock roots. As a 20+ year member of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Hegna has been party to a lot of feedback & fuzzed out guitars. And while the Pebbles and Nuggets oeuvre has crept into the works of Federale on occasion, it has always been as a background influence. But, for this song, the desire emerged to outwardly embrace the aesthetics of personal genre heroes: The Electric Prunes, The Pretty Things, and The Chocolate Watchband.

On this track, Hegna is joined by Jared Molyneux (The Shivas) on guitar, Pat Spurgeon (The Dandy Warhols, Rogue Wave) on drums, and Ryan Lynn (Mission Spotlight, The Needs and guitar tech for The Decemberists, Metric, and The Lumineers) on guitar.

Collin Hegna shares, “It's a mean world out there. If you don’t choose how you want to live your life, someone else is gonna do it for you. And you can bet they don’t have your best interests at heart. One has to be brave and do the hard things if one wants to accomplish anything worthwhile. And that can be hard when you're swimming against the tide. It's easy to get confused because there’s a lot out there trying to keep us all confused. To thine own fuzz pedal be true. Just a bit of advice from this stranger."

Since forming, Federale has carved out a unique niche within the indie music landscape, blending their signature spaghetti-Western instrumental sound with increasing doses of moody vocal arrangements in the spirit of Lee Hazlewood and late-period Leonard Cohen. Through it all, Hegna – as both songwriter and lead singer – maintains a strictly retro vibe. Federale's records have always sounded period-correct for an alternate-universe 1971, where rock and roll never caught on.

The ten tracks that make up 'Reverb & Seduction' were recorded at Revolver Studiosin Portland and engineered by Collin Hegna, Matt Thomson and Andrew Joslyn, who boasts five 5 Grammy Award winning albums. Mixed by Jeff Stuart Saltzman (The Black Keys, The High Violets), Matt Thomson and Collin Hegna, this album was mastered by Adam Gonsalves at Telegraph Mastering.

Earlier, Federale shared two singles - the lead track 'Heaven Forgive Me', featuring The Black Angels' Alex Maas, and 'No Strangers', a tribute to Lee Hazlewood, which involved drummer Dave Mudie, who plays drums for Courtney Barnett of The Dandy Warhols, Andrew Joslyn (Nancy Wilson, Kei$ha, Macklemore, Mark Lanegan), and Hunter Lea (Grammy nominated Nancy Sinatra / Lee Hazlewood reissue producer).

Ron Laboray of Little Richard’s Almanac, who animated the video for the new single, along with Niki Elliott, explains, "This song 'Advice From A Stranger' supplied us with a broader narrative, and we were able to let our imaginations run. We came to the idea of using Hieronymus Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights as a backdrop while brainstorming possibilities on a hike, as the painting connects well with the themes of god and forgiveness found in the song, and it’s weird as hell. The song's tempo had also led us to consider monster movie possibilities and, after deciding on the painting, the garden gnome emerged as a sort of Godzilla figure, the perfect hero to do battle in Bosch’s garden. 'Advice from a Stranger' is our favorite animation to date - 15th century and it still slaps!"

As of June 19, 'Advice From a Stranger' will be released everywhere digitally, including Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal and Band camp. The full 'Reverb & Seduction' album, out July 12, will be released on CD, vinyl and as a digital download, and should also be available from fine record dealers.

Federale's 'Reverb & Seduction' tour, which takes them up and down the U.S. West coast and beyond, kicks off in Portland on July 12 with their album release show. A European tour is anticipated in late fall 2024.

Portland's FEDERALE presents 'No Strangers' single & announces tour dates. The new 'Reverb & Seduction' album marks 20 years

Portland-based collective Federale presents their new single 'No Strangers', which pays homage to the legendary Lee Hazlewood. At the same time, they announces their 'Reverb & Seduction' Tour, which will lead them up and down America's West coast and beyond.

This song involves Dave Mudie (drummer for The Dandy Warhols' Courtney Barnett), Andrew Joslyn (Nancy Wilson, Kei$ha, Macklemore, Leslie Odom Jr., Mark Lanegan) on strings, and Hunter Lea (Grammy nominated Nancy Sinatra / Lee Hazlewood re-issue producer) on harpsichord.

This is the second single from their 'Reverb & Seduction' album, out this summer via Jealous Butcher Records.  Earlier, the band released the lead track 'Heaven Forgive Me', featuring The Black Angels' Alex Maas on backing vocals.

In the 20 years of their existence, Federale has carved out a unique niche within the indie music landscape, blending their signature spaghetti-Western instrumental sound with increasing doses of moody vocal arrangements in the spirit of Lee Hazlewood and late-period Leonard Cohen. Through it all, songwriter and lead singer Collin Hegna – who also spent the last 20 years as a dues-paying member of The Brian Jonestown Massacre – maintains a strictly retro vibe. Federale's records have always sounded period-correct for an alternate-universe 1971, where rock and roll never caught on.

“'No Strangers' is an ode to the story songs of Lee Hazlewood. But this time our narrator is on a warpath. Like the leader of a biker gang or a band of musical outlaws, our protagonist rolls into town a Stranger and finds the hypocritically self righteous town folks are none too happy to see him. This doesn't worry him though, because our antihero plans to even the scales in any way necessary. Musically the marriage of strings, pedal steel and reverbed-out guitars transports us to a nondescript time and a nondescript place that is definitely in the past and definitely in the desert. It may be a rugged, dangerous place. But it sure sounds cool. Too bad The Stranger had to burn it all down in the end," says Collin Hegna.

"Each Federale release has sought to embrace influences ever farther afield from the band’s original concept as an ode to Spaghetti Western film music. But one aesthetic constant (as far as non-instrumental songs go) has been the dark, narrative driven folk ballad".

Comprising 10 tracks, 'Reverb & Seduction' was recorded at Revolver Studios in Portland and engineered by Collin Hegna, Matt Thomson and Andrew Joslyn, who boasts five 5 Grammy Award winning albums. These new musical homages are complemented by a new lineup of well-known Portland rock-scene vets, including talents from The Shivas, Roselit Bone, Dandy Warhols, Rogue Wave and Delines. Portland-based collective Federale announce new album, preview the lead track 'Heaven Forgive Me'

Portland-based outfit Federale have announced they will release their new 'Reverb & Seduction' album via Jealous Butcher Records in summer. Ahead of this, these legendary songcrafters present the lead track 'Heaven Forgive Me', which features Alex Maas of The Black Angels on backing vocals.

Their sixth studio album, 'Reverb & Seduction' marks the band’s twentieth anniversary. The band’s most immersive and varied album to date, with do-it-all frontman Collin Hegna at the height of his powers, this is a tour-de-force road trip from psych rock to country duets, never straying too far from the spaghetti western roots that inspired the band many blood-moons ago.

Over the past two decades, Federale has carved out a unique niche within the indie music landscape, blending their signature spaghetti-Western instrumental sound with increasing doses of moody vocal arrangements in the spirit of Lee Hazlewood and late-period Leonard Cohen.

"Each Federale release has sought to embrace influences ever farther afield from the band’s original concept as an ode to Spaghetti Western film music. But one aesthetic constant (as far as non-instrumental songs go) has been the dark, narrative driven folk ballad," says Collin Hegna.

"The goal with 'Heaven Forgive Me' was to bridge the gap between the yarn casting style of Lee Hazlewood and the bleak New Wave anthems of Depeche Mode. Contrastingly, the arrangement of the song leans heavily on the aesthetics of 70’s Italian horror soundtracks, such as Goblin and Fabio Frizzi."

Comprised of 10 tracks, 'Reverb & Seduction' was recorded at Revolver Studios in Portland and engineered by Collin Hegna, Matt Thomson and Andrew Joslyn, who boasts five 5 Grammy Award winning albums. Mixed by Jeff Stuart Saltzman (The Black Keys, The High Violets), Matt Thomson and Collin Hegna, this album was mastered by Adam Gonsalves at Telegraph Mastering.

These new musical homages are complemented by a new lineup of well-known Portland rock-scene vets, including talents from The Shivas, Roselit Bone, Dandy Warhols, Rogue Wave and Delines. Going forward, Federale expects to fully embrace the role of a working, touring band, starting with a West Coast tour timed to coincide with the new record's July release. A European tour will follow in late fall 2024.

As of April 24, 'Heaven Forgive Me' is available everywhere digitally, including Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal and Bandcamp. The full 'Reverb & Seduction' album, which can be pre-ordered now, will be released on July 12 via Jealous Butcher Records, available on CD and vinyl wherever fine records are sold.
