“Catchy melodies and a subtle touch of old Xymox and New Order … Recommended” ~ Sonic Seducer

Melbourne-based synthwave artist
Suburban Spell has released his new 'Falling Down' EP, named in reference to the long-term outcomes of bad choices and giving into guilty pleasures, along with the official video for his latest single 'Natural Science'.

Suburban Spell is the solo project of Peter Endall, who combines the austere beauty of Kraftwerk, 80's melodic sensibilities, driving rhythms and some noisy grind thrown in for good measure. Influenced by the heyday of new wave and 70's-80's electronica, this music carries the beautiful imprints of such artists as Ultravox, OMD, Visage, Jean-Michel Jarre, The Cars, Gary Numan and New Order.

Endall's previous band Schizo Scherzo was active in the heady days of Melbourne's 80's music scene, playing alongside the likes of The Eurythmics, Pseudo Echo, Real Life and Fergal Sharky. Having re-emerged on the music scene as Suburban Spell, he has found his niche in modern Australian electronica.

'Natural Science' is a statement on the weight of scientific evidence and the powerful push by doubters to challenge such knowledge based on baseless contradictory viewpoints. The video for this and the lead track
'Bright Gold Cross' were created by Dingo Cross Films in Melbourne, with production and direction by Paul Puccio and Cassie Dart.

Suburban Spell's music is a commentary on the fragility of suburban lifestyle, never-ending efforts to keep up appearances, and an exploration of society's dark and fragile underbelly. This music is also a commentary about Endall's own vulnerabilities in the urban landscape and the wider societal norms that interlace with politics, religion and pop culture.

"Falling Down is a direct reference to the longer term consequences of bad choices and giving into that guilty pleasure. The entire EP's lyric content touches on these themes. 'Bright Gold Cross' is about seeking redemption and how the church is a vehicle that allows you to hide your sins and hand out forgiveness at will and '12 Causes of Pain' is about loving for the wrong reasons. These themes are present across the EP and reinforce the Suburban Spell that we are all apart of. Musically, the songs are deceptively simpler than my previous work, a constant challenge for me is to adopt the less is more philosophy and I hope this release is one step closer to that goal," says Peter Endall.

"I have heard others describe Electronic Music as being cold and distant, but I've always found something warm and inviting there. Suburban Spell's music has a cold and distant overtone but, underneath, I try bring layers of beauty and warmth that weave in and out, creating a musical foundation of tension and release. This dramatic approach is nothing new in music; however, it is an element that I really enjoy exploring. The odd circumstances of my childhood upbringing and the religious cult that i was in during those years have had a somewhat quixotic impact on me and Suburban Spell, having been exposed to a belief system that was ultimately flawed with a very inconsistent set of values throughout my formative years. These challenges are constant references when working on the Suburban Spell project."

The new EP follows the
'Split Levels - Remixes' EP (February 2023), a series of reworkings of his acclaimed 'Split Levels' album, involving goth-rock / post-punk legend William Faith (Christian Death, Mephisto Walz, Shadow Project, Faith & The Muse, The Bellwether Syndicate), along with New Zealand's Robots In Love, Australia's Ontic, Pittsburgh's Tragic Impulse and Italian artist Kurs.

The 'Falling Down' EP is out now and available from fine digital platforms, including
Spotify, Apple Music and Bandcamp, where it can also be obtained on CD.

"The concept behind 'Natural Science' was written about the baffling science deniers who gained a lot of momentum during the Covid 19 pandemic. How documented facts from the world's leading institutions were flatly rejected, based on a belief system that didn't align with a particular view point, coupled with selective research to echo whatever that belief system was." says Peter Endall.

"When that mind-set becomes a natural way of thinking, it's very difficult to offer an alternative view point, and Natural Science appears to be denied. I don't want to sound all knowing and it's good to challenge the accepted science, however I believe there are immutable laws of science that are irrefutable), what I call Natural Science."

Melbourne-based synthwave artist Suburban Spell presents his new single 'Bright Gold Cross', the first taste of his forthcoming 'Falling Down' EP, named such in direct reference to the long-term consequences of bad choices and giving into guilty pleasures.

The accompanying video, with its slick shadow-play, was created by Dingo Cross Films in Melbourne and produced and directed by Paul Puccio and Cassie Dart.

Suburban Spell is the solo project of Peter Endall, whose music combines the austere beauty of Kraftwerk, 80's melodic sensibilities, driving rhythms and some noisy grind thrown in for good measure. Having re-emerged on the music scene as Suburban Spell, he has found his niche in modern Australian electronica.

"The song 'Bright Gold Cross' is symbolic of the act of absolution in a Christian religious setting and how it can be used to dissolve years of appaling behaviour. Absolution is an act that forgives mortal sins and enables one to die in the "state of grace", able to eventually enter heaven, This is essentially a "get of jail free card" for those inclined to use it," says Peter Endall.

Suburban Spell's music is an observation and commentary on the fragility of suburban lifestyle and the never-ending efforts to keep up appearances, as well as an exploration of society's dark and fragile underbelly. But his music is also a commentary about his own vulnerabilities in the urban landscape and the wider societal norms that interlace with politics, religion and pop culture.

"Bright Gold Cross is about seeking redemption and how the church is a vehicle that allows you to hide your sins and hand out forgiveness at will," says Endall.

"The odd circumstances of my childhood upbringing and the religious cult that I was raised in during those years have had a somewhat quixotic impact on me and Suburban Spell. Exposed to a belief system that was ultimately flawed with a very inconsistent set of values throughout my formative childhood years, these challenges are constant references when creating music for the Suburban Spell project."

German Acapella Metal Innovators VAN CANTO Reveal Energizing New Single and Official Video for “Falling Down”

New Album, To The Power Of Eight, to be Released on June 4, 2021

Pre-Order NOW

The world's most exciting acapella metal masters VAN CANTO return with their energetic and unique Rakkatakka-power and are set to release their highly anticipated, eighth inimitable offering, To The Power Of Eight, on June 4, 2021 via Napalm Records. Prepare for an outstanding vocal attack as the unit has just dropped the new, rousing single “Falling Down”, along with an official music video today!

Since 2006, VAN CANTO have delivered pure vocal power to the metal world and prove that heaviness does not necessarily need riffs and bass lines. “Falling Down” takes off at full speed as a stomping, heroic power metal anthem that leaves no muscle inactive. Both male and female vocals are given space to shine, but also harmonize together as one entity.

VAN CANTO on “Falling Down“:

"'Falling Down' is a VAN CANTO powerhouse, a composition with powerful vocal riffing, endless harmonies and a dramatic arrangement. The lyrics describe the timeless moment of creativity when you feel a melody entering your brain to then materialize into music.

We put our focus on all the details in the vocal arrangements, tying together Sly's heroic lead voice together with Hagen's rough power and Inga's epic smoothness like an eight-knot. 'Falling Down' combines VAN CANTO's trademarks and brings them to life by a combination of a rock'n'roll stage environment, on- and off-stage visuals and a lot of Power of Eight and more, thanks to all the people involved! It is inspired by all work Robert Naumann has done in all previous videos of VAN CANTO. Robs, we love you and we miss you."

German acapella metal at its best!

Bringing pure vocal power to the metal world since 2006, VAN CANTO set the stage for their very own genre and never failed in surprising their fans and beyond, while showcasing that metal can be heavy as hell without any riffage. With their previous full length, Trust in Rust(2018), the German rarity reworked its lineup, consisting of seven members since then. For To The Power Of Eight, the unit once again joined forces with Philip Dennis “Sly” Schunke, who had been the lead singer on their first six studio records. Sly joins lead vocalists Inga Scharf and Hagen Hirschmann on all twelve flawless tracks as third vocalist and special guest. It’s clear that this peerless piece of music was written with three voices in mind: To The Power Of Eight embodies a special sense of common bond and presents VAN CANTOin undeniable peak form!

VAN CANTO on the new album:

“Being able to present an album after 15 years of band history, where three lead singers share the microphone hand in hand, makes us incredibly proud. Due to the pandemic situation we had a lot of time to work on To The Power Of Eight and put all our heart and soul into the compositions, the arrangements and the production. Originally we planned to have Sly as guest vocalist for one song – but it turned out to be twelve in total in the end. If someone would ask for one record to present VAN CANTO the most suitable way, we would choose To The Power Of Eight.”

Pre-order the new album, To The Power Of Eight, NOW

From their own original speed driven tracks, like flaring “Dead By The Night”, raise-your-fist animated “Heads Up High” or mid-tempo, heart-warming “Turn Back Time”, to anthemic heavy metal covers such as Amon Amarth’s “Raise Your Horns”, Iron Maiden’s “Run To The Hills” or AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck”, VAN CANTO always manages to easily serve their own unique take with every output. On the one hand, To The Power Of Eight reflects a well experienced collective that has gathered several top 50 entries on the German album charts and played numerous shows around the globe and festivals like 70k Tons Of Metal, Wacken and Masters of Rock. But at the same time, it presents these energetic visionaries of acapella metal, who are far from resting on what they’ve achieved so far.
