In the annals of 21st century alternative rock history, there are few artists who cast a longer or more peculiar shadow than Finnish Love Metal pioneer Ville Valo. After all, his band HIM was easily among the most iconic and idiosyncratic groups of the millenium. Zealously revered, gleefully reviled but impossible to ignore, their music left an indelible mark on a worldwide legion of fans. The scarlet letters stood for "His Infernal Majesty." Their founder stood for something delightedly out of step with the status quo. 

"We only hoped to temporarily redirect hard rock's blood flow from the nether regions towards the heart," reminisces Valo, the singer, songwriter, and primus motor of HIM. Judging by the monolithic presence of the Heartagram in any account of music this side of the millennium, it's apparent that he succeeded. 

Inspired by everyone from Poe to Bukowski and tinged by a penchant for perfumed Sabbathian gloom, Valo's creative lovechild would produce eight era-defining studio releases and over 10 million record sales, not forgetting a Grammy nomination, countless magazine covers, critical acclaim, and the veneration of a generation. Thus, it came as no surprise that the news of a farewell tour in 2017 was greeted with shock and disbelief among devotees and endless speculation as to what or who was to take up the velvet mantle.

"As fun as the funeral rites for HIM were, it took me more than a few moons to lick my wounds in the shadow of the Heartagram and come up with an excuse to strum and hum again. Eventually, I decided put a leash on my beloved black dog and we started howling together instead of barking at each other. That's how VV and the album Neon Noir was born."

The first omens of Valo’s return surfaced in 2022 with a trio of singles which formed an outline portrait of the greater musical picture yet to come. First came the confessional exsanguination of Loveletting, which followed by the elegiac goth-optimism of Echolocate Your Love. They were both powerful statements of intent, and combined with the driving, nocturnal radiance of The Foreverlost – an uptempo paean to doomed romance, confirmed that Ville’s heart still throbs to the beat of a different ECG. All threads in a new tapestry of Ville’s design, with the full picture due to be revealed on January 13th, 2023. More than just an album, it’s a rebirth, a resurrection, and nothing short of a long overdue return of a visionary artist to a world of his own creation.

Hailing from northern Sweden, on their new studio album Beneath My Feet addresses profound topics such as abuse, trauma, anxiety and grief. "'Brick' is what it sounds like to lose your sanity. This is the musical equivalent to a high-speed chase, or a 2-minute 45-second long nightmare. The main riff actually started as this crazy c-part of another song, but then we thought, "why not just build a whole song around this fucked up riff?!" I can definitely hear the influence of late 80’s Megadeth here. Helmets on boys and girls!"

With former and current members of well-known acts like Amoral, Warmen and others, Oceanhoarse have become known as a band that's willing to explore things in their very own style, instead of sticking to any kind of average formular. Fire of Aries Releases Heavier, Re-Imagined Version of Seal's "Kiss from a Rose"

Brett Davis, the founder/vocalist/guitarist of the band Fire of Aries, released his re-imagined version of Seal's "Kiss from a Rose" to all major platforms today. Brett's version, produced by Cameron Mizzell, can be described as heavy and melodic, while still being recognizable.

"The decision to create a rendition of 'Kiss from a Rose' dates back to 1995 when Batman Forever was released. I was just a kid then; I don’t even think I had a guitar. That song stuck with me. It was cinematic, emotional and catchy for its time. I gravitate to songs that tell a story or paint a scene in our imaginations. 'Kiss from a Rose' is also a bit cryptic and mysterious, which intrigues me. Fast-forward to 2023, I felt like it was the right time to release the song; at least it was in the running. I made the decision to step up to the big leagues and have Cameron Mizzell, a producer of several bands and artists that have influenced my music style and sound. I gave him a short list of songs I wanted to cover; he quickly gravitated to take on 'Kiss from a Rose.' I told him that our version had to be a significant departure but retain the framework of the original so you’d know what song it was when you heard it. He delivered and I had my ideas on what we could do to make it heavy and melodic, but Cam completely blew me away with the team he assembled to create this version. This rendition will always be unique to me as it's my way of immersing myself fully in the music industry and seeing what I can make of it. I have a passion for entertaining and helping people through life. That’s what music has done for me. I want to return the favor many bands and artists have afforded me with their music over the years. I will keep this flame lit for as long as I can to pursue creating heavy, cinematic and melodic music. I would love for this song to be featured in a future release of a Batman movie; maybe a dark and gritty one would fit perfectly. Only time will tell. I am optimistic that music fans will dig it. I look forward to performing it live and loud and hearing the crowd singing it with me," says Brett Davis.

Fire of Aries has been smoldering for the last 20 years and has reached the temperature where it has become combustible. In 2001, Brett Davis, the band's founder, began his journey to become an accomplished musician and artist in the Rock and Metal genres. The inspiration started from the early years of Creed, where Brett found his true passion for guitar and songwriting through watching Mark Tremonti release hit after hit and riff after riff.

As time progressed, Brett jammed with friends from high school, then joined an established band, August Ending/Burning Yesterday, where he recorded tracks for the first time with well-known producer Travis Wyrick (Pillar, 10 Years, Disciple). From that point, he became more influenced by music from American and European metal bands, which brought him to where he is today with Fire of Aries.

Fire of Aries has a rhythmic, melodic, thrashy and percussive sound and feel, influenced heavily by bands like: Sevendust, In Flames, Bullet For My Valentine, Slipknot,Killswitch Engage, Trivium and Memphis May Fire, to name a few. Brett's guitar and songwriter influences come from Andy James, Mark Tremonti, Chad Kroger, James Hetfield and Clint Lowrey. According to Brett Davis, "I want my influences of Rock, Metal and Country music to converge into a beautiful, chaotic harmony," he adds. "Fire of Aries is a musical experience with grit and weight to it." He says, "Through the songs I release, I want the 'real men,' 'the badasses' and 'the gangsters' to let down their guard, feel, experience and express their raw feelings again. In my generation and before, we were taught that boys don't cry and that we must be tough, strong and resilient in our lives; this leaves very little room to feel a plethora of other innate emotions as humans." He adds, "I want to create music with emotion, experience and substance. I envision each song as a screenplay of micro experiences or enlightenment in our lives." Brett references the screenplay idea as he has been an avid cinematographer for over a decade. Fire of Ariesis currently writing and recording music through 2023 and plans to embark on a tour in 2024, supporting bands and artists that have influenced the sound and the story.

German Symphonic Metal ascending stars BEYOND THE BLACK can already look back across a stratospherically successful career, despite their youthful years. Additionally, on December 15, 2005, a concert celebrating the project, album, and anniversary took place at the Nokia Theater in New York City.

"It was incredible to be part of a lineup of such insanely heavy hitters. WOW. And to have had the opportunity to play with Joey and Paul that night, with Corey singing — definitely a Make-A-Wish moment for me," says Ian.

That star-studded event featured multiple musicians, both past and present, from Roadrunner bands — as well as musicians that did not originally perform on the All-Star Sessions album.

The set list consisted of some of the most popular and famous songs released by Roadrunner Records, as well as some of the original songs from the project's album. The "core band," which performed on the majority of the songs, consisted of the aforementioned Cazares (Fear Factory), Adam Duce(Machine Head), the late Paul Gray (Slipknot), the late Joey Jordison (Slipknot, Murderdolls), Andreas Kisser (Sepultura), and Roy Mayorga(Hellyeah, Stone Sour).

Now, both the original All-Star Sessions album and the concert performance itself will be made widely available in multiple configurations on March 10, 2023. Pre-orders for the concert album, which will be available on vinyl, CD, digitally, and presented in HD for the first time, are now live here.

We have opened the vault to bring to you for the first time on vinyl Roadrunner United The Concert (Live at the Nokia Theatre, New York, NY, 12/15/2005), featuring members of Slipknot, Anthrax, Trivium, Machine Head, Fear Factory, Sepultura, and more. Roadrunner United was a project organized by the heavy metal record label Roadrunner Records to celebrate its 25th anniversary. On December 15, 2005, in New York City. Roadrunner Records produced the metal concert to end all Metal Concerts: 39 musicians, representing 25 different Roadrunner bands, performed 25 songs from 19 different bands' repertoires. This unique and unprecedented aggregation of musicians was no jam session. Each song was studiously rehearsed and arranged, coming together with exuberant perfection, to produce a concert that can only be called legendary and iconic!
 
Conceived as a follow-up to the Roadrunner United The All-Star Sessions, the label recruited the core team of musicians (Dino Cazares, Adam Duce, Paul Gray, Joey Jordison, Andreas Kisser, and Roy Mayorga) as the backbone of the performance.  Sure enough, as they fine-tuned the songs and rehearsed them tirelessly, dozens of other musicians boarded the performance.

"Wiser" is the perfect messenger for Laura Cox's upcoming album.

Solence Release New Lyric Video For "Antidote" Taken From Forthcoming New Album '_hope is a cult_' Out February 17

Swedish electropop-metal quartet Solence has released a lyric video for their latest release, "Antidote". Speaking to the theme of seeking meaningful connection, the track is taken from their forthcoming new album '_hope is a cult_' out Friday, February 17 via Hopeless Records. Speaking on today's release, the band shares:

"'Antidote' is a song about wanting to feel more alive. We interact with more people on a daily basis than ever before, yet we’re still unable to create real connections and end up feeling alone. Singer/Songwriter Julia Poorman Releases New Single "Runaway Ship" to all major platforms!

Singer/songwriter Julia Poorman released her newest single "Runaway Ship" to all major platforms. The lyrics and music were written by Julia Poorman with music and production by Danny Roselle. The single was produced, engineered and mixed by Danny Roselle at Rosedome Studios. It was mastered by Michael Fossenkemper.

"Runaway Ship embodies both the excitement and unstoppable feeling of new romance while also acknowledging the beauty in a love that is chosen over and over again despite the hardships it may face," says Julia.

Writing songs has always been second nature to Julia. As a young girl living in New York's Finger Lakes Region, her little poems could be found stuffed in her night stand expectantly waiting for melodies to bring them to life. As soon as she'd pick up the paper, the music would come flowing out and a song would be born.

Throughout her youth, music served as a reliable and cathartic outlet for Julia. To her, it's an entire dimension filled with comradery, boundless expression, and healing.

As a young adult, Julia took a brief step back from her musical endeavors to help build a business and life with her fiance. Navigating the world as an entrepreneur brought many rewarding opportunities for growth and unforgettable experiences, but she was left feeling a void in her creative nature.

In 2021, Julia unexpectedly lost her father. One of the last text messages he sent her was a photo of him listening to her original self-titled EP from 2012. Monument Records’ harmonious sister duo Tigirlily Gold’s mid-west upbringing means one thing: they know how to work hard. Signed to the label in 2021, sisters Kendra and Krista Slaubaugh honed their craft grinding away on Nashville’s Lower Broadway for more than five years. They would see their fans, who were not residents of Music City, show up where they would deliver four-hour sets, three to four nights a week. Since the genre’s inception, black metal has been ruled by lone wolves. Individuals who blur the lines between “masterminds” and “madmen,” creating in solitude and willful confinement. From first and second wave purveyors such as BATHORY and BURZUM to this century’s revivalists like SAOR and PANOPTICON, these anomic souls have made incomparable contributions to the dark arts. And in 2022, BIZARREKULT paves a new yet familiar path, establishing itself as one of the cult visionaries of this decade.

Before finding his way to music, multi-instrumentalist Roman V was first a poet. Since childhood, Roman found an outlet in writing and by 2006, he created BIZARREKULT as an auditory accompaniment to his verbal expressions. “BIZARREKULT since the beginning was a quest of identity and philosophical search for answers on the questions that bother the mind at night and day,” explains Roman.

Despite the project’s inception 16 years ago, BIZARREKULT’s music did not make its debut until the release of ‘Vi Overlevde’ in 2021. As he started feeling challenged by the declining state of the world, Roman pursued a new path and decided to go straight to the environment that incubated and birthed the genre that he loves. As he relocated from Siberia to his current home of Norway, his new surroundings had its intended purpose and greatly impacted his musical journey. “After some initial recordings the project was set aside in order to deal with increasing mass challenges from the surrounding world. And then it ended up getting a spark a decade later in a different environment, nature, language and culture. So distant, but so close. Norway has become my second home and the last few years that led to revitalization of BIZARREKULT were spent on reflecting on myself, meaning, purpose and reuniting with the things that were important – art and creativity.”

Meaning “We Survived,” ‘Vi Overlevde’ was a very intimate, vulnerable, and personal offering. Roman describes the record as “a testament to survival through personal crisis” and notes that it is “filled with reflections on childhood, family and societal relations.” The musician took care to ensure that the record delivered a comprehensive package, aligning the music, artwork, and lyrics with exact precision.

As the world was collectively reckoning with the turmoil of year two of a global pandemic, the album’s message gave many hope. Fans started to emerge, reacting to the record with their own artistic interpretations as a way to pay tribute. The album also won the hearts of the media, appearing on a handful of “album of the year” lists, including scoring a third place position from Sweden’s biggest newspaper, Aftonbladet.

Now, BIZARREKULT is ready to enter a new chapter, forging a new union with Season of Mist and completing the work on its sophomore full-length, ‘Den Tapte Krigen.’ Meaning “The Lost War,” ‘Den Tapte Krigen’ thematically picks up the thread from where ‘Vi Overlevde" left off, but sees a musical evolution as BIZARREKULT continues to find and establish its identity. “The main message of ‘Den Tapte Krigen’ is about a constant war inside our lives, war with ourselves, our closest ones, our societies,” says Roman. “It’s a war in which we can lose everything, including our personality, faith, honour and dignity. However, similar to ‘Vi Overlevde’ that ends on a rather positive note, ‘Den Tapte Krigen’ contains a message of hope and reconnection, of necessity to make a peace with yourself, accept what you are, your identity, and share forgiveness and love. This is the only way out of the vicious circle.”

Trivium Share Heaven Shall Burn Cover

Grammy-nominated Florida heavyweights TRIVIUM — Matthew K. Heafy(vocals/guitars); Corey Beaulieu (guitars); Paolo Gregoletto (bass); and drummer Alex Bent — are embarking on a sold-out headline tour of Europe along with Heaven Shall Burn. The bands are marking the occasion with a twist and have come up with a clever way to give their fans some "new" music.

Today, Trivium have shared their cover of Heaven Shall Burn's "Implore the Darken Sky."

The cover is featured on a split 7" that the bands are selling on the road and directly to fans while touring Europe together. Heaven Shall Burn previously released their cover of Trivium's "Pillar of Serpents," which appears on the band's first album From Ember to Inferno. Listen here.

"In the early days of Trivium, back when we were discovering the many great genres and flavors of heavy music, I knew about the classic greats, I knew about extreme metal, but never before had I heard what HSB was doing," says Heafy. "Heaven Shall Burn's Whatever It May Take album was my first introduction to their brand of metalcore. This fusion of hardcore ethos and metal sounds blew my mind."

Heafy finishes, "'Implore the Darken Sky' is not only my favorite HSB song, but the one that taught me so much about a sound that needed to be injected into Trivium."

HOST Release Pulsing Electronic Single "My Only Escape"

Greg Mackintosh and Nick Holmes have revealed the latest single from their brand new dark wave project HOST, a pulsing electronic single titled 'My Only Escape'.

The third single from their debut album IX, which will be released on 24th February through Nuclear Blast Records, 'My Only Escape' is yet another display of lush nuance that showcases the band's vast range of influences.

Vocalist Nick Holmes commented, 
"Musically, this track has an intentional repetitive element that builds throughout the song, this is also mirrored in the lyric idea, as in the repetition of an everyday life held in such poor regard. The feeling of actually being physically scared, acts as an acceptable relief from day to day drudgery."

The origins of HOST do not trace back to the 1999 PARADISE LOST album bearing the same name but instead to the West Yorkshire music clubs of the mid-to-late 1980s. The pounding rhythms, sublime melodies and undercurrent of darkness drew them in, creating immediate earworms and a desire to delve further.

Mackintosh finally put plans into motion during the pandemic for a venture that would merge his penchant for sound design with the moods and atmosphere of 1980s dance-pop and Goth. The project was originally a solo pursuit until he asked Holmes, his longtime PARADISE LOST songwriting partner, to join. 'HOST' was selected as the name as a tip of the hat to the aforementioned album that found PARADISE LOST in an unprecedented period of experimentation that eschewed their metal roots and also challenged their fanbase in ways like never before.

“We always stood by 'Host' as an album,” says Mackintosh. “This project is not totally connected to that album, but some of the ideas are extrapolated. We’re taking the basic premise and trying it out now. And, really, it was something fun and interesting for us to do. We’ve been doing PARADISE LOST for a long time and got an itch to try something different from where PL is now. I could take PL down this route again. Who knows? It may happen if we live long enough, but I thought, ‘Why not now?’ I had the time to do it.”

Chicago-based alternative post-punk outfit The Bellwether Syndicate ring in this new dark year with the release of 'Beacons'. Debuting at #4 in the DAC/German Alternative Charts, this is the second single from their 'Vestige & Vigil' album, slated for spring release via Nexilis Records /  Schubert Music Europe and Sett Records in North America.

The Bellwether Syndicate is made up of William Faith (vox, guitars), Sarah Rose Faith (vox, guitars), Philly Peroxide (keyboards, percussion), Stevyn Grey (drums) and Corey Gorey (guitars). Formerly of seminal goth acts Christian Death, Mephisto Walz and Shadow Project and co-founder of Faith & The Muse, William Faith moved from his native Los Angeles to Chicago in 2010, forming The Bellwether Syndicate with his wife, Sarah Rose Faith a.k.a. Scary Lady Sarah, one of the scene’s most eminent DJs and club promoters and host of Nocturna, the longest-running goth event in North America.

'Beacons' exerts its nautical feel in both tone and verse, with the ‘set adrift’ narrative supported by liquid, chorused guitars and distress-signal bass and synth, before the whole thing kicks into a full steam ahead chorus, with chiming, glorious guitars chasing the pulsing beat and soaring vocal all the way home.

"'Beacons' is simply a love song to our family: our people — our fans. We’d be truly lost at sea without them, and every time we get ready to play a live gig, they really are the beacons that guide us home, to that moment where we’re together in a safe harbor and everything is possible. That moment is everything to us, and it’s what we live for," says William Faith.

Earlier, the band released the lead track 'Dystopian Mirror', which reached #11 in the German Alternative Charts (DAC). This glam-noir single wields a relentless assault of hard-edged guitars, buzzsaw synths and tribal beats set the stage for a guided tour through the realm of the unwell, spat out with sardonic conviction by the voices in your head.

Six years in the making, the 'Vestige & Vigil' LP was produced by William Faith, whose credits include Jarboe, Clan of Xymox, Bootblacks and Autumn, and Chad Blinman (Face To Face, Faith and The Muse, Jarboe). Recorded by William Faith at 13 Studio in Chicago, it was mixed by Blinman at The Eye Socket. This album comes 9 years after debuting with 'The Night Watch' EP and four years since their latest single, 'Republik'.

'Beacons' is out now, available from all fine digital outlets, including Apple Music, Spotify and Bandcamp, where 'Dystopian Mirror' can also be found. The full 'Vestige & Vigil' album will be released in April 2023.

Tarja's Outlanders Project Shares "We Own This Sky" Feat. Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal

OUTLANDERS prove once again how multifaceted their vision is. With "WE OWN THIS SKY," Tarja Turunen and Torsten Stenzel have chosen a song which is both calming and full of power. Fascinatingly arranged, more than 80 vocal tracks flow into this instrumental track, creating a steadily rising tension with atmospheric synth sounds and wild guitar riffs. OUTLANDERS welcomed Ron "BUMBLEFOOT" Thal as guest guitarist for this inimitable track.

"WE OWN THIS SKY" is the sixth of eight singles and is being released as a limited edition 7" vinyl exclusively at Tarja's online store and digitally at earMUSIC.
