Venom INc. Release Video For Title Track Of "There's Only Black" + New Album Out Now!

The day has come for extreme metal pioneers VENOM INC. to finally unleash their new album, There’s Only Black, in its devastating entirety! Their sophomore album is a no-holds-barred assault on bigoted hypocrisy and conformism in today's society, as well as a demonstration of musical superiority delivered by some of the genre's true originators.

In celebration, VENOM INC. have released a video for the title track 'There's Only Black', which can be watched below.

Almost 40 years after their inception, the revitalized 1989 - 1992 Venom line-up of guitarist Jeff “Mantas” Dunn and vocalist/bassist Tony “Demolition Man” Dolan, and the new addition of drummer Jeramie “Warmachine” Kling have returned with one hell of a follow-up to their acclaimed debut, Avé, and show no signs of slowing down.

ABOUT VENOM INC.

As 2015 swept in it brought with it a solid revival of traditional Metal bands. A chance encounter and request brought and offer to Tony Dolan (Vocalist and Bassist) to reform the lineup of VENOM that had recorded the classic "Prime Evil" album and solid follow-up albums that kept the band very much alive during the onslaught of Grunge and Brit-pop that destroyed all but the most hardy in the early 1990's Metal had suffered at the hands of the new trend but VENOM (with this lineup) refused to alter or die and so continued the legacy that had begun when Jeff Dunn (aka Mantas - Guitar) formed the original band in 1979 and brought the world extreme Metal in the form of the "Welcome To Hell" and "Black Metal" albums.

The albums penned mostly by Dunn, exposed the world to a new way of music taken to the extremes, and with a pinch of darkness and the controversial odor they raised their heads from the grave as if they had always been lying in wait and brought chaos to a neatly formed music industry.

Topped off with the voice of Clive 'Jesus Christ' Archer and later by Cronos and The Demolition Man the band was and still is a force of nature. While others attempt to take credit for all things VENOM the truth is not a hidden mystery but rather written on tablets like the ten commandments but unlike religion, you do not need faith to follow VENOM or their ideas and music but simply ears to hear.

'Somewhere In Time, We Were Born ..' they sing and it has become their mantra. Today's scenes are full of examples taken from this classic band. Images and themes and even a whole genre taking its name from the seminal Black Metal album. The characters were and still are larger than life to fans but it is the music that carries the flame. The true inspiration for all is the dark heavy vibes tinged with a Black and Roll touch.

VENOM INC. began again in 2015 by accident almost and the name was not a choice but given by fans, agents, promoters, etc. On reflection, it is just a matter and fact that this band is true and real and carries the true spirit which began in 1979 and will end their days being that spirit that was lost somewhere over the years. Perhaps it is inevitable for a band to change or grow away from its original intent but every single Legionnaire from the VENOM's Legions knows..their own moment that made them a lifelong fan and so it is to this end that VENOM INC will continue to grow and perform the classics from the legacy with heart and soul and true meaning and will write with this same intent in mind so that new fans too may realize that a real band playing with all they have to give still exists and are still very important in this growing age of digital separation from reality.

VENOM INC. has been touring without pause since its first appearance at KEEP IT TRUE festival in Germany in 2015 and have taken its brand of energy and performance across the globe on many European tours, Asia, the US, all over South and Central America, Hellfest, Bloodstock, Alcatrazz, Wacken are among the countless festivals shows, a special invitation to tour with Glenn Danzig and a special appearance at the Original Misfits show at Chicago’s ‘All State Arena’, as well as Special invited guests by The Metal Allegiance in New York City amongst the list of other things, live is where the band truly live but now it is time for a new album and the writing has not stopped 2021 we shall see the new album and new shows taking the world into its arms once again and embracing it and it's dark heavy soul

He Is Legend Announce "Endless Hallway" & Share Double Single — WATCH + LISTEN

Like a true American classic at this point, He Is Legend resemble an old, dog-eared novel or nearly worn-out VHS tape that you dust off in order take a familiar ride and get thrilled at the same time.

Their alchemy of reckless rock ‘n’ roll grooves, heavy metal unpredictability, and downright indefinable magic continues to enchant, enthrall, and enrapture a devout fan base, quietly bordering on cult-like fascination.

Today, the band — Schuylar Croom [vocals], Adam Tanbouz [lead guitar], Matty Williams [bass], and Jesse Shelley [drums] — is pleased to announce its seventh album 'Endless Hallway'.

It arrives on November 11 via Spinefarm. Pre-order it HERE

With the album release right around the corner, the band also delivers the one-two punch of a double single with "The Prowler" and "Lifeless Lemonade". Both emerge with fangs bared, sweat on the brow, and blood on the chin.

Listen HERE

"This album is a testament to our band's endurance," the band says. "It is easily our most aggressive album to date, born and bred from the odd shift in the world that affected everyone. We have always used our music as an outlet, and no better time than when the world felt so much like an 'Endless Hallway'."

ABOUT HE IS LEGEND:

He Is Legend's catalog spans 'I Am Hollywood', 'Suck Out the Poison', 'It Hates You', 'Heavy Fruit', and 'Few'. However, it would be 2019’s 'White Bat' that elevated them to another level altogether.

Revolver highlighted it as "rollicking," while Metal Injection awarded it a rating of "9/10" and christened them "legends, indeed". Riff Magazine hailed them as "one of metal's best-kept secrets", and Heavy Blog Is Heavy applauded 'White Bat' as "easily the band's best album in a decade, but it even takes a run at being the strongest collection of their career.

Plus, it generated nearly 10 million-plus total streams.

For 'Endless Hallway', the band wrote in their rehearsal space in Wilmington, NC. They recorded drums outside of Knoxville before cutting guitars with Al Jacob at Warrior Sound in Chapel Hill, NC.

Vocals would be a different story as Croom endured one of the most trying seasons of his life. "We had to push the vocal recording, because my stomach was failing due to my diabetes," he shares. "It was so bad I couldn't perform. It took a while to get back to some semblance of normal. Eventually, I hopped in the car and drove 10 hours to Nashville to record at Mitch Marlow's place. I'm a different person now. The universe throws those things at you to make you stronger. That's personal growth."

Dayseeker Share "Dreamstate" Visualizer

Southern California's Dayseeker recently announced their new album 'Dark Sun'.

The album arrives November 4 via Spinefarm. Pre-order it HERE

The band has just shared the visualizer for the new single "Dreamstate".

Watch & Listen Below.

"'Dreamstate' is about my experiences in dreaming of my father, who passed last July and truly feeling like we were communicating while it was happening," front man Rory Rodriguez shares about the intensely person track. "It was a beautiful thing to experience on one hand... but also very heartbreaking and disorienting with my sense of reality on the other."

The album, as a whole, is incredibly contemplative, with Rodriguez having said, "'Dark Sun' is a collection of songs that deeply explored my personal life over the last two years. Most of it is written about my father's passing, about how it felt like the sun burned out the day he passed, and how the world is a little darker without him in it."

After a successful summer headliner run, Dayseeker will be back on the road this fall supporting Bad Omens. All dates are below.

Dayseeker are a quiet killer. The band has steadily built a buzz over the past several years — and they have reached a tipping point. Dayseeker built themselves into a scene standout with 2019's 'Sleeptalk', which was hailed by Alternative Press as "a warm and welcome release to higher ground" and as "much needed fresh air into the post-hardcore scene." The album has gone on to accumulate over 150 million streams, and it positioned the band as a formidable force — and one that is primed to take its next big leap.

In 2021, the band dropped a deluxe version of 'Sleeptalk', featuring four reimagined versions of album tracks, which offered fans a fresh and unique take on songs they already love. It also demonstrated the depth and breadth of the band's creative vision, scope, and possibilities.

However, 'Dark Sun' will be Dayseeker's moment and is set to catapult the band beyond the scene's stratosphere.

Montreal's The Ember Glows ripe with post-punk romanticism on 'Where Spirits Play' EP

“The Ember Glows is a time-shifting device powered by the spiraling lead lines reminiscent of the early Cult sound, woven of the same ornate intricacies as Echo and The Bunnymen, as anthemic as The Mission at their most bombastic best" ~ The Big Takeover

"Reminds me of early U2 or Simple Minds which is Tre cool" ~ Skin (Skunk Anansie)

"At the intersection between post-punk intensity, the romanticism of new wave and trippiness of psychedelic rock... their sound is more akin to late 20th century northern England" ~ The Spill Magazine

"Moodily brooding to dynamically vibrant songs that are drenched in ruminative baritone vocals, darkly shining guitars, low-register bass lines, and pushing drum beats" ~ The Record Stache

"Boasting a classic guitar-driven New Wave psych sound, the simple hooks, a pulsating rhythm section, textural guitar interplay, and baritone vocals bring to mind Echo & The Bunnymen, The Teardrop Explodes, U2, The Mission, and The Associates" ~ Post-Punk.com

Montreal-based indie rock / post-punk quartet The Ember Glows has released their new EP 'Where Spirits Play', a 4-track offering recorded at Closet Studios in Montreal with elements of Simple Minds, The Cult, Echo and the Bunnymen, early U2, Nick Cave and The Mission at the fore.

Formed in 2019 by members of Montreal-based indie artists Room Control, REPO, Scene Noir and Citylake, The Ember Glows is Richard Bunze(guitar), Kevin Hills (bass), Martin Saint (vocals and guitar) and Dan Stefik(drums).

Leading up to this EP, The Ember Glows previewed the singles 'Silent Love' and 'The Mirror'. About the latter, frontman Martin Saint says this is "about how most nations carry skeletons in their closets - even the so-called peaceful ones. Sooner or later, we must face the weight of history and the past hits us hard collectively".

The Ember Glows trace their roots to guitar-driven new wave, psych rock and 90’s British indie music, having crafted a sound that boasts simple hooks, a pulsating rhythm section, textural guitar interplay and baritone vocals.

Friends since their teenage years, personal chemistry and musical synchronicity brought them together as The Ember Glows. With all four members also being part of other bands, what started as a side-project ultimately became everyone’s main music priority, fueled by their jointly-forged sound and corresponding adrenaline. Each member brings something different to the table - Rich with his knack for texture and big sound, Kevin’s rumbling groovy bass lines, Dan’s manic and melodic drumming, and Martin’s delicate lacing of baritone and jangly guitars.

The 'Where Spirits Play' EP is out now, available from Apple Music and other digital stores, as well as Bandcamp, where their 'Passerby' EP is also available on cassette and digitally.

A SHORELINE DREAM releases 'Loveblind' LP, a gazey-postpunk blurring of past and future

"Delicate curves and beauty... a glorious dawn" PopMatters

"Goth heaven... one of the leading lights of the neo-shoegaze movement" DKFM

"A sonorous journey – a inward looking, lush and wonderfully orchestrated sonic adventure with dark intensity" ~ Spill Magazine

"A wild and beautiful thing" The Big Takeover

"Shadowy and storming dreaminess.. reminiscent" Stereo Embers Magazine

Iconic shoegaze / postpunk outfit A Shoreline Dream have released their 'Loveblind' album via Latenight Weeknight Records. Their sixth full-length record, here theydives into recollections and past desires while looking forward in a wash of soundwaves pointing towards a blinding future.

Their first release since the Covid pandemic began, offering 40 minutes of goth-laced progressive soundscapes. The new collection was previewed by two solid tasters - lead track 'Alarms Stop Ringing' and the title track 'Loveblind'. Produced by Ryan Policky and recorded over 10 months in the Barnum suburb of Denver, Colorado, this album features immense synth layers, the band's signature guitar and symphonic vocals.

"This 'Loveblind' album is an introspective view of things building all the way up, then crashing back down - like relationships that try to rekindle, only to find that the original reason for the failure has grown even stronger. The songs and driving energy behind each represents rare moments of true passion and also those of complete devastation. Even in perceived time of feeling, things couldn’t get any better, a finality lies waiting behind the next corner," says Ryan Policky.

In 2020, A Shoreline Dream released their 'Melting' album (2020), the latest in a series of critically acclaimed releases. Formed in 2005, today ASD revolves around two original members - multi-instrumentalist / vocalist Ryan Policky and guitarist Erik Jeffries. Their legacy is further rounded out thanks to collaborations with legends such as Ulrich Schnauss, Mark Kramer and The Engineers (for whom they created a remix for progressive label gods K-Scope). Also of note is the fact that the band also opened for Chapterhouse for their very final appearance.

The pandemic has taken its toll on our mental well-being and the perception of money and power has blown previous years away. Dying to get back to the good times and moments of pure, unscathed lust, we long for new experiences to sweep us off our feet. 'Loveblind' reaches for that same energy, taking cues from previous A Shoreline Dream works, drawing from their progressive goth roots. Layers of moodiness, blissful explosions of rock and chugging tempo mix with the pain, love, hope and moments of near death experienced while creating the album itself.

As of September 23, the 'Loveblind' LP is available everywhere online, including Spotify, Apple Music and Bandcamp. The band will also soon release their seminal 'Recollections of Memory' LP (featuring Ulrich Schnauss) on vinyl - it can be pre-ordered now.

TOBIAS SAMMET'S AVANTASIA - release new single 'The Inmost Light' featuring Michael Kiske

Tobias Sammet’s AVANTASIA have today released ‘The Inmost Light’ featuring Michael Kiske. The new track is the latest single from AVANTASIA’s upcoming ninth studio album A Paranormal Evening With The Moonflower Society. The song sees both vocalists trading off their signature styles over a short, sharp attack of classic heavy metal that’s destined to be a hit live.

Pre-order the album here: https://avantasia.bfan.link/APEWTMS

Tobias Sammet comments:
“Michi Kiske is not only a good friend of more than 20 years, he has been with AVANTASIA right from the beginning. His singing inspires me when I compose songs, and while finalizing the writing for a duet with him it always ends up in a very powerful missile like
“The Inmost Light”. The sound is in my DNA, it always was an important component of my songwriting and maybe that is the reason our voices form a strong unit together. It is always a challenge to work and sing with this kind of expert. You have to put a lot of effort into it in order to not secede. Michi‘s singing and the sound of early HELLOWEEN influenced my career. I wrote “The Inmost Light” in the wake of just throwing everything overboard which would not be essential. I wanted to deliver a short and tight rocket”.

The video is a recap of AVANTASIA’s career so far. It’s an emotional ride that takes us all the way back to the roots of the project.

Watch the brand new video here:

A Paranormal Evening with the Moonflower Society consists of eleven magical songs and features numerous prestigious guest stars. It’s an adventure that’s sure captivates the audience.
The album was produced by Tobias Sammet alongside AVANTASIA guitar player Sascha Paeth.
The fantastic cover artwork was done by Swedish illustrator Alexander Jansson.

Anyone that cut their metal teeth with The Big Four, and then dug a little deeper into the indie scene, should receive a major endorphin rush when they discover that speed and thrash masters RAZOR are about to release their first studio offering in 25 years entitled 'Cycle of Contempt'.

From the catchy, concise riffs and insistent beats of album opener “Flames of Hatred” to the double-barreled assault, muted power chord chugging and combative gang vocal of album closer “King Shit”, 'Cycle of Contempt' is a trenchant reminder of a time when clubs around the world were packed with long-haired bands that played as fast as they could to mosh pits that spun and tumbled like clothes in a short-circuiting dryer.

As energetic and exciting as "Evil Invaders" and as urgent and powerful as RAZOR’s1989 speed-fest "Violent Restitution", 'Cycle of Contempt' showcases a band that never stopped spewing venom.

“I tried to write songs that everybody could listen to and say, “Yeah, I know a guy who's done that to me or done this, or I know that situation. I can relate to that,” band founder Dave Carlo says. “And I didn’t want to make everything specifically about me because when you do that, you exclude people. I wanted to include everyone that’s ever felt pissed off about anything.”

An unrelenting slab of old-school thrash that showcases RAZOR's encyclopedic knowledge of the past along with Carlo’s growth as a songwriter, player, and lyricist, 'Cycle of Contempt' is here to show that RAZOR are as dominating as ever.

CHRIS CONNELLY to release new album dedicated to NICO. Preview first 'Eulogy to Lenny Bruce'

"Connelly, with his beautiful timbre and artistic candour, delivers a haunting and touching rendition of Nico’s music. Nobody performs quite like this masterful musical chameleon and here, he channels her fabulously, honouring her with depth and personability... impeccable delivery and smoothness" ~ The Spill Magazine

"Chris Connelly has never been an artist of convention... a thematic mirror, Connelly’s songs follow her story – adventurous, controversial, and misunderstood"~ Regen Magazine

Alternative music legend Chris Connelly has released his new single 'Eulogy to Lenny Bruce', revealing an accompanying video by Emma Kathan. This is the first offering from a new record paying tribute to the iconic Nico, The Velvet Underground muse and one of the most unique, tragic and misunderstood female artists in the history of music.

Now based in Chicago, the Scottish counter-culture icon had initially planned to release 10 tracks, presenting his own versions of her songs, but Connelly then decided to write a string of additional compositions, spanning Nico's life. The result is the 24-track 'Eulogy to Christa: A Tribute to the Music & Mystique of Nico', to be released in late autumn by Shipwrecked Industries in the USA and Easy Action in the UK.

Heralded by some as Connelly's finest vocal performance, 'Eulogy to Lenny Bruce' appeared on Nico's 1967 album 'Chelsea Girl'. Penned by the tragic Tim Hardin about the equally tragic Lenny Bruce but with slightly altered lyrics, Nico's sorrowful delivery is laced with anger at Bruce's death.

On this album, Connelly worked with producer and long-time collaborator Chris Bruce, who is a band member of Meshell Ndegeocello and also worked with Seal, Aaron Neville, Bob Dylan, The Waterboys, My Brightest Diamond, Cheryl Crow and Sam Phillips.

'Eulogy to Christa' is a labour of love, empathy, sadness, acting and channeling, along with Chris’s adoration of the dark corner of rock inhabited by the Velvets and their peers. This album sees Connelly purposefully adopt the personas of Nico, Lou Reed and John Cale – even Andy Warhol makes a cameo!

“I was not a stranger to her music, I had been playing The Velvet Underground & Nico to death for about a year, but knew nothing of her solo work until Cosey Fanni Tutti played me 'Desertshore' whilst I was visiting her in London in the summer of 1980," says Chris Connelly.

"Nico’s output was spartan. At that age, I didn’t know why, but I was drawn in deep to the myth, as well as the myth of Lou Reed, The Velvet Underground and the concentric rings of influence in their wake, like so many musicians.”

The album was also inspired by the book 'You Are Beautiful and Your Are Alone'by Jennifer Otter Bickerdicke, who contributed to album liner notes, noting “This is a record to be played at full blast, all the way through, as a commemoration not just to Nico the person, the musician, but to art for art’s sake, for making something because it is important and needs to be done – an idea that is as rare and precious as Nico herself.”

The Nico material spans from her first Jimmy Page-composed single and her time with The Velvet Underground to her intense and unique solo recordings up until her death. In song, Connelly follows her from Berlin to New York via Paris, Ibiza, and Rome, then back through Paris, London, Edinburgh, Manchester and up to her tragic and needless death in Ibiza.

Even the photos of Nico featured in the album artwork have particular significance: the cover shot was taken by author Alastair MacKay from the audience at the Nite Club in Edinburgh in 1981, where a 15-year-old Connelly was also in attendance. The inside photo of Nico was taken in 1982 by Chicago photography legend Howard Goldblatt.

Chris Connelly has been creating for circa 40 years. Since his days with Fini Tribein Edinburgh, Connelly has over 20 solo releases. He frequently collaborates with other musicians, including notable projects like Ministry, The Revolting Cocks and Pigface, while contributing to newer ones such as Cocksure and The Joy Thieves. He has published four books (poetry, autobiographical and fictional narrative).

'Eulogy to Lenny Bruce' is now available via Apple Music, Amazon and Bandcamp. The full 'Eulogy to Christa' album will be released digitally on November 11, which also happens to be Connelly's birthday. The album is already available for pre-order via Bandcamp. The CD version of the album will be released on December 4.

Connelly's album release show takes place on Thursday, November 10 at Chicago's Gman Tavern. He will be accompanied by Matt Walker, Carolyn Engelmann and other members of Sons of the Silent Age.

UK indie pop duo KARAMELIEN present 'Lionhearts', a song of determination and resilience

''One of the best singles so far in 2022, this is a true work of beauty and professionalism, taking you to your very own ascension heights" ~ Amplify Music Magazine

"Upbeat, a joyous folk-rock affair... bedecked in kaleidoscopic sixties sparkle, a slight splash of psychedelia and a whole tsunami of charm and grace" ~ Big Takeover Magazine

"A hug of soulful indie pop with groove as infectious as its melodic breath and lyrical smile is poetic... seductive captivation" ~ Ringermaster Review

UK-based indie pop duo Karamelien present their second single, called 'Lionhearts'. A sumptuous, uplifting track about love and unity in difficult times, this was produced by RIDE frontman Mark Gardener at OX4 Sound near Oxford. The accompanying video was created by Eveshka Ghost.

Karamelien makes soaring perfect pop. Based in East Grinstead, this duo is singer-songwriter Léanie Kaleido and guitarist Mark Foster - two long-time friends. The breezy heartened video, created by Eveshka Ghost, perfectly captures the elevated spirit of this song and its creators.

'Lionhearts was inspired by the past couple of years, during which we've all been getting so despondent, confronted by negativity in the news and social media. Covid and other diseases, war, climate change and so on. When actually, there is so much love in the world, good things being achieved, communities coming together, positive things happening," says Léanie Kaleido.

"A friend of mine suggested I write something to convey that and the song happened pretty quickly for me! The idea of the heart of a lion is something that has cropped up in my songs before and comes from my Buddhist practice, which uses that expression a lot and feels so empowering."

This project brings Léanie Kaleido's music into new exciting territory, following up her critically acclaimed 2021 album 'How To Weigh A Whale Without A Scale', also produced by Mark Gardener.

Earlier, Karamelien debuted with the grooved-out 'Ascension Heights' single, featuring a sample from the track of the same name by Top Topham', who is not only Kaleido's father but also The Yardbirds' original guitarist before Eric Claptonassumed his place. Only 15 at the time, he was pressured to leave the band to pursue Art studies. Eventually signed to Mike Vernon's Blue Horizon label as a solo artist, Topham again re-joined The Yardbirds a few years ago during their 50th anniversary tour.

A really moving Father / Daughter work of beauty, this song also features former Earth, Wind & Fire bassist Mo Pleasure, whose CV includes collaborations with Ray Charles, Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson. With guidance from Paul Statham (Dido, Simple Minds, Kylie Minogue, Sophie Ellis Bextor, Natalie Imbruglia) in sampling her father's track, Kaleido performed the pre-production work from her home studio.

'Lionhearts' and 'Ascension Heights' are out now and are available everywhere digitally, including Spotify, Apple Music and Bandcamp.

Dalton Dover Releases New Song "Damn Good Life"

Following the announcement of his global deal with Sony Music Publishing and Droptine Music Publishing earlier this week, the MusicRow-dubbed “master country talent” Dalton Dover releases his new song “Damn Good Life,” written by Dover, Alex Maxwell and Jaxson Free. Listen to “Damn Good Life” below.

“I wanted to write a song that makes people smile. There are plenty of drinkin’ songs, and there are plenty of love songs, but not enough feel-good songs,” Dover shares. “When Alex, Jaxson and I sat down, we were having a great day and ‘Damn Good Life’ basically wrote itself. It’s a reminder not to take all the little things for granted in life.”

Last month, as Dover was wrapping his seven-night Ole Red residency in Nashville, the Spotify Hot Country 2022 Artist to Watch was surprised by a call from the red phone during his set with none other than Blake Shelton on the line, inviting Dover to make his Grand Ole Opry debut later this year on Dec. 3.

“I’ve done the Opry tour and I walked out on the stage for a minute, but I really didn’t get to stay out there long,” Dover shared with Country Now. “So having the opportunity to go sing out there is gonna be different. It’s gonna be an animal. It’s gonna be a game changer.”

Before he makes it into the famed circle for a performance, Dover will support Priscilla Block this fall on the Welcome to the Block Party Tour launching Oct. 13 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Tickets are on sale now.

Today’s release follows “Hear About A Girl,” “You Got A Small Town” and “Baby I Am,” earning Dover a spotlight as Billboard’s February Country Rookie of the Month and Country Now’s “Country Next,” sharing “Dover’s country music career may be just beginning, but his star is quickly catching fire.”

About Dalton Dover
Lauded by MusicRow as a “master country talent,” twenty-three-year-old Dalton Dover first started singing at church as a kid, winning his fifth-grade school talent show performing Justin Bieber’s “Baby.” In that moment Dover’s love of performing was born. By the age of 16 he had picked up a guitar and started teaching himself to play, yet it was his grandfather who turned him on to country music and artists such as Keith Whitley, Rhett Akins, Joe Diffie and Steve Wariner. Enamored with the honesty and storytelling found in country music, Whitley’s “Don’t Close Your Eyes” was the first song Dover taught himself to play on guitar. Performances at local bars soon followed along with sharing covers of some of his favorite songs on TikTok. It was there he caught the ear of producer Matt McV and A&R Veteran and founder of Droptine Recordings, Jim Catino, who quickly signed Dover.

Married to his high school sweetheart, Faith, the two have lived in the same rural Georgia small town, population 1,200, all their lives, important for the Dovers to give their two young children, Taylor and Alyiah, the same idyllic childhood they had growing up — the life one finds in a small town. And it’s that pace and familiarity he enjoys so much that he sings about on his debut track “You Got a Small Town.” Produced by McV, “You Got A Small Town” quickly garnered critical acclaim from Billboard, MusicRow, Country Now and Wide Open Country. With his debut and follow-up “Baby I Am” earning notable playlisting, Dover was named a Spotify Hot Country 2022 Artist to Watch. Follow-up “Hear About A Girl” saw critical acclaim, with MusicRow sharing, “We’re in the presence of a master country talent when this man sings.” Dover’s latest single “Damn Good Life,” cowritten with Alex Maxwell and Jaxson Free is available now, with plans to release more new music later this year.

After opening for Luke Comb’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium show in Atlanta, Ga., Dover set out on his seven-night residency, performing across multiple locations of Blake Shelton’s Ole Red, where he was invited to make his Grand Ole Opry debut Dec. 3. Before performing from the famed circle, Dover will bring his captivating live set to Priscilla Block’s Welcome to the Block Party Tour this fall, kicking off Oct. 13 in Cincinnati, Ohio. SPIRITWORLD announce 'Deathwestern' album, drop video

Las Vegas metallic riff-riders, SPIRITWORLD, will release their 2nd studio album, DEATHWESTERN via Century Media Records. Today, the band reveal the title track, which is available to stream HERE and comes accompanied by a mini western horror movie video, directed by Todd Hailstone, which premiered today.

In August, the band revealed another new track, Moonlit Torture, featuring Dwid Hellion of Integrity.

Stu Folsom (SPIRITWORLD's leader and mastermind) comments:

"Super stooooooked to announce our new single and video DEATHWESTERN will be out! I started writing our new album right when I finished Pagan Rhythms. At that point, I had been playing guitar everyday for about a year and it was - no joke - the highlight of my days. Just banger riff after banger riff jumping out of the Viper Blood Tele.  It took six months to get four songs together that I thought could stand up to Pagan. Then I knew I had another full length. This was the 4th song I wrote and it became the title track and our partner in crime and A&R extraordinaire, Mike Gitter's favourite. When we finished tracking, I vividly remember getting chills.  The intro whammys are 100% intentional White Zombie worship. ‘La Sexorcisto: Devil Music Vol. 1’ was SUCH an important record for me. From samples, to groove, to incorporating horror into metal... definitely one of the most influential albums of my youth. I'm following that blueprint still. Always have. Can't wait for this video to drop... finally!"

Check out that killer video below.

The album is available in the following formats:

  Ltd. CD Edition

  • Black LP (w/ LP-Booklet & Poster). Available at all outlets

  • Red LP (w/ LP-Booklet & Poster) - 300 only. Available at Century Media EU Store

  • Yellow LP (w/ LP-Booklet & Poster) - 300 only. Available via SpiritWorld (band exclusive)

  • Transparent tan color LP (w/ LP-Booklet & Poster) - 500 only. Available at all outlets

  • Transparent orange crush LP (w/ LP-Booklet & Poster) - 300 only. Available at Century Media US Store

The restless Stu Folsom (leader of SPIRITWORLD) is also pleased to announce the release of his book Godlessness, which will also be released on November 25th.

The book is a collection of short stories, inspired in equal parts by the western pulp of Louis L’Amour, the novels of Cormac McCarthy, and the twisted horror of Clive Barker, Godlessness is the fictional companion piece of SPIRITWORLD’s debut Pagan Rhythms (2021) and upcoming follow up, DEATHWESTERN (2022).

Dedicated to the memory of, and edited in part by, Power Trip’s Riley Gale, who died unexpectedly in 2020, Godlessness was initially released as a limited-edition paperback.  The book will be available to pre-order through Rare Bird Lit, who also have the collectable formats below.

DEATHWESTERN Limited Edition Cassette: https://rarebirdlit.com/deathwestern-by-spiritworld-limited-edition-cassette

SPIRITWORLD emerged in 2017 as a musical outlet for Folsom’s love of punk, outlaw country and metal. SPIRITWORLD’s earliest efforts took a decidedly outlaw roots punk bent. Yet, it was with the full-metal direction taken on the initially self-released Pagan Rhythms, (re-released in 2021 through SPIRITWORLD’s new label home, Century Media) that won the band international acclaim. Daniel P. Carter, BBC 1 DJ and curator of The Rock Show with Daniel P. Carter, as well as the likes of Exodus/Slayer guitarist Gary Holt and former Sepultura/current Soulfly leader Max Cavalera sang the album’s praises on their social media, discovering the band on word-of-mouth alone.

BLOODBATH Drop Raging Official Video for “Putrefying Corpse”

“Death metal thoroughbreds keep the infernal flames burning.”

(Metal Hammer, UK)

“Festering, ugly, toxic, rotten death metal with no frills from start to finish.”

(Deaf Forever, DE)

"Real deal death metal, executed by masters of the craft: "Survival of the Sickest" is horribly good."

(Blabbermouth, US)

"Cut them open and they bleed pure death metal – and there’s more than enough in Survival Of The Sickest' to fill the whole bath"

(Distorted Sound, UK)

Just two weeks after dropping their acclaimed sixth full-length album, 'Survival Of The Sickest', death metal beasts BLOODBATH massively hail towards the annihilating spirit of old-school death metal with a new music video for thrillingly violent “Putrefying Corpse.

This vicious onslaught is driven by explosive death, thrash and black metal and features a roaring contribution by Barney Greenway (Napalm Death), proving the critically-acclaimed, cult-followed band has no limitations, leaving the scene in shreds.

With Survival Of The Sickest” the legendary wicked force featuring current and former members of Paradise Lost, Opeth, Katatonia and Lik marks an evil comeback, presenting death metal at its ugly best: vicious, unrelenting and irrevocably sworn to the black!

Nick Holmes on Putrefying Corpse:

"The process of human life with a soul and humility, to eventual death, as nothing but rotting meat for vermin.”

Watch the official video for “Putrefying Corpse

Formed by Jonas Renkse and Anders Nyström (both of KATATONIA), Mikael Åkerfeldt (Opeth) and Dan Swanö (Edge Of Sanity) in 1998, BLOODBATH devoted themselves to resurrecting the increasingly forgotten art of pure death metal.

In 2014, they unveiled a new frontman – legendary Paradise Lost vocalist Nick Holmes, now redubbed Old Nick – and yet another macabre musical evolution. With a line-up of Renkse, Nyström, Per ‘Sodomizer’ Eriksson, Martin ‘Axe’ Axenrot and Holmes, the only way to go was grim.

Fueled by new guitarist Tomas ‘Plytet’ Åkvik (Lik), BLOODBATH’s latest and greatest album and Napalm Records debut, 'Survival Of The Sickest', gleefully confronts the slavering ghoul lurking in the shadows, and treats him to ten songs of ripping death metal frenzy.

Alongside BLOODBATH’s official alumni, “Survival Of The Sickest” boasts a smattering of irresistible cameos from the great, good and ghoulish of the metal underground, including Barney Greenway (Napalm Death), Luc Lemay (Gorguts) and Marc Grewe (Morgoth).

BLOODBATH add:

"If there was a declaration of goods attached to this album, it would say Florida death metal exported from Sweden."

Make sure to save your copy NOW!

The world is in flames, and 'Survival Of The Sickest' - produced by BLOODBATH and co-produced and mixed by Lawrence Mackrory at Rorysound Studios - offers no respite from the horrors of reality.

From the thuggish brain-smash of opener “Zombie Inferno” to the bleak, obsidian ooze of closer “No God Before Me”, 'Survival Of The Sickest' is the sound of a great band in blistering form. In contrast with 'The Arrow Of Satan Is Drawn', which borrowed heavily from the blackened end of the death metal world, the new BLOODBATH goes straight for the jugular in true old school fashion.

With strong echoes of everything from Morbid Angel and Death to Deicide and Obituary, songs like the disgustingly slow and heavy “Dead Parade” or the deliciously twisted “Tales Of Melting Flesh” breathe fresh fire into an arcane, perpetually rotting formula.

"Survival Of The Sickest" is available in the following formats:

TOMBS Launches Vinyl Pre-Sales for 'Ex Oblivion' EP

New York/New Jersey metal collective TOMBS will be releasing its new EP, 'Ex Oblivion,' in vinyl format on October 28, 2022 via Season of Mist! Pre-orders are now live at THIS LOCATION.

The EP was previously released digitally via Bandcamp and all streaming services in July 2022! Stream or download the EP HERE.

TOMBS previously released the title track, "Ex Oblivion," along with a Lovecraft-inspired music video!

The EP follows up TOMBS' 2020 full-length, 'Under Sullen Skies,' which was released in November of 2020. The record has been named one of the best metal releases of 2020 by Metal Insider, Decibel Magazine, The Pit, Riff Magazine, Chicago Music Guide's Global Music Podcast, and others while drummer Justin Spaeth has been dubbed one of the best drummers of 2020 by Sick Drummer Magazine.

There’s a line from Mike Hill’s audiobook/tour diary of ANODYNE’s 2004 European tour in which the gravel-throated frontman affirms, “I will always outwork you.” In that case, Hill was referring to an incident in Germany early on during a six-week long overseas jaunt with his previous band. In actuality, however, he could have been talking about any instance between when he first picked up a guitar as a teen and the present. Whether it’s his history dating back to previous bands OTIS, ANODYNE, KING GENERATOR or VERSOMA, his ongoing solo work in VASILEK, the more recent SCORPION THRONE project or his thirteen year reign as the driving force and nerve center of post-black metal institution TOMBS, hard work is second nature and nothing will keep the guitarist/vocalist from creative endeavor and expression. And it’s not just music in which his propulsive work ethic has gleaned results: Hill also is the CEO and roast master at Savage Gold Coffee (a labelling nod to TOMBS’ 2014 album of the same name), the host/producer/creator of the Everything Went Black podcast, host and producer of Gimme Radio’s Metal Matters flagship podcast, the creator and co-host of horror podcast Necromaniacs as well as a stalwart in the print and online journalism world covering music and MMA fighting. His is, has been and always will be a life steeped in dedication and with unassailable drive in the cross hairs. And despite the world being put on pause, Hill refuses to curtail his innate determination and ongoing tenacity with the result being TOMBS emerging with the next chapter in its impressive catalog and growing legacy: the band’s fifth full-length, 'Under Sullen Skies'.

“The week VERSOMA broke up in 2007, I started TOMBS,” he says, recalling how, characteristically, the band started before any dust was permitted to settle. “The initial rehearsals ended up being the bulk of material that showed up on the first [self-titled] EP. The intent from the beginning was to get back to playing music I wanted to hear and to not be so concerned with genre or satisfying anyone else’s desires. It was to do music on a personal level and be a reflection of the darkness I’ve felt throughout my life.”

Formed in the gritty corners of pre-gentrified Brooklyn, NY, TOMBS’ early mandate was steeped in the harshness and atonality of black metal but dosed with trace amounts of the varied influences and inspirations ingrained in Hill’s musical muscle memory by previous bands. “The canon of music TOMBS has created has spanned several different genres, but I’ve always had it my intent for there to always be a certain amount of violence and hardness lurking the background.”

Those early years delivered splits and singles, the highly revered 'Winter Hours' debut in 2009 and Decibel’s 2011 Album of the Year, 'Path of Totality'. Never one to sit still, 'Path of Totality' was followed by appreciable and impressive amounts of touring in accordance with the lauding afforded by critics and fans and the braying of foes, which only served as fuel for Hill’s perseverance. Savage Gold came three years later after which a restless Hill began nudging TOMBS’ black metal base into territories populated by gothic and death rock artists like FIELDS OF THE NEPHILIM and SISTERS OF MERCY as well as avant-garde purveyors Caspar Brotzmann and Live Skull while never forgetting – or being able to – scrape the grime of NYC from under his fingernails. The addition of a second guitar and live keyboards/samples brought a fuller sound and allowed noise sequences and soundscapes to be brought to the live show. It was around the time of 2016 'All Empires Fall' EP that TOMBS punctuated its iconoclastic spirit and thought process. Despite then-being part of the Relapse Records family, the band struck out with the intent of self-releasing the EP in order to retain as much independence as contractual obligations would allow – retaining the digital and publishing rights while eventually licensing the record back to Relapse. A one album stint in 2017 under the Metal Blade banner birthed 'The Grand Annihilation' into the world where TOMBS took broader and more daring steps into buffering black metal with morose melody, sullen death rock and classic METALLICA chugging. Following a parting from Metal Blade, the band – now completed by drummer Justin Spaeth, guitarist Matt Medeiros and bassist Drew Murphy, who are also 3/4ths of New Jersey death metal crew KALOPSIA - quickly found a home on Season of Mist and issued the 'Monarchy of Shadows' EP literally a week before the world went into Coronavirus lockdown.

“The original strategy assumed we would be on the road for most of 2020,” says Hill with a lamenting laugh. “We had a sick tour with Napalm Death planned right after the EP’s release. We were going to record the new full-length before the tour and have it come out in the fall. There was all kinds of tour talk and plans and 2020 would have been a tour-de-force of TOMBSactivity in the United States and Europe. Obviously, none of that is happening, but we’re still going ahead with the record.”

Of course they are. Throw a hurdle in front of Mike Hill and he’ll never shy at rolling up his sleeves and taking on the challenge. Even with the world in shutdown mode, Hill is still brimming with enthusiasm about the input and work ethic of the current TOMBS lineup and how Spaeth, Mederios and Murphy stepped up to the plate in the creation of 'Under Sullen Skies'.

“Everyone contributes on this record and the door has always been open for others to do so. There has always been this misconception that I’m some sort of tyrant always telling people what to do and play. The fact of the matter is that most of the time I outwork people; that’s just the way I am. No one is ever going to outwork me on any level in any area of my life and I was always coming up with material. Now, I have these maniacs in the band who are equally motivated and there’s a whole new life injected into TOMBS. That’s awesome and I love it. These days we’ll try anything and we actually write stuff and throw it out because it’s not perfect. It’s more like a writing committee, which I really appreciate. It’s not just me writing everything. It’s a big difference from 'The Grand Annihilation' which was basically a solo record.”

'Under Sullen Skies' is this lineup’s second kick at twisting black metal’s DNA around dank emotional corners, psychological turmoil and the urban underbelly all of which is unavoidably coloured and touched by the present-day status of life on this here Earth.

“The album’s title came during all this and the sort of post-apocalyptic world we’re living in,” Hill explains. “It encapsulates an overall feeling of gloom and depression which is pretty much how we’ve been living for most of this year. The title was the last piece to fall into place. I remember standing on the roof of the building I was living in at the time on a grey day and it was raining – actually, it wasn’t even raining; it was a half-assed attempt at rain! – and depressing and I just thought, ‘What a sullen sky’ and it just stuck with me.”

The album starts with “Bone Collector,” a furious blast of melodic black metal that shifts gears towards an anthemic fist-pumping slog through the goth rock-thrash metal VENN DIAGRAM. “Void Constellation” takes as many cues from Peaceville Three gloom and doom as it does the death metal stomp of OBITUARY and INCANTATION. “Descensum” mines the various well-worn parts of Ride the Lightning for influence before blasting the doors open with some startlingly spacious chromatic single-note atonality. As the album progresses, further textures and moods are employed via acoustic instrumentation and keyboards as well as sampled soundscapes all butting heads with furious second wave black metal and sly to nods to death rock heroes SISTERS OF MERCY and FIELDS OF THE NEPHILIM, all of the band’s motivations and interests being dropped into the chameleonic pair of tracks closing the album, “Sombre Ruin” and the appropriately titled “Plague Years.”

“‘Barren’ stands out as the song that’s most collaborative,” notes Hill. “Justin wrote the bulk of the riffs on that one, that sort of NWOBHM/SCORPIONS ending part is something I came up with, Matt added a bunch of guitar harmonies over it and Drew’s bass is laid thick underneath. That one is one of the biggest group efforts and one of the strongest songs on the record.

“I explore a lot of the archetypes that are used in folklore on this record, like werewolves and vampires which I’ve always been interested in, and on a song like ‘Secrets of the Black Sun’ I talk about the finite nature of our time on this planet, that nothing is really permanent and being aware of that whether as an individual or as a civilization, which I guess fits in with the pandemic and the changes that are going on. There are all kinds of other people, civilizations and creatures that have come and gone long before us and if you think about it over a long enough time span, everyone’s life expectancy goes down to zero.”

The new album not only sees Hill expanding his creative and collaborative comfort zone by wholly embracing the offerings of his band mates, but he’s also let down the drawbridge to allow folks from beyond the immediate TOMBSfamily to include what he describes as “mad guest spots.”

“There’s Cat Cabral, who does the spoken word piece on ‘Angel of Darkness.’ She’s not a musician per se; she’s more from the occult and witchcraft world. I’ve been friends with her for a really long time and she’s a great resource for esoteric knowledge. She’s also an actress who has done plays and commercials and been in films, so I figured she’d be the perfect person to deliver dialogue in an emotionally deep way, and be good at taking direction. Ray Suhy from SIX FEET UNDER rips the guitar solo in ‘Barren’ and that solo is its own masterpiece, in my opinion. BLACK CROWN INITIATE and former TOMBS live guitarist Andy Thomas contributed a guitar solo in ‘Void Constellation.’ Todd Stern from PSYCROPTIC plays the solo in ‘Mortem.’ Sera Timms from IDES OF GEMINI and BLACK MATH HORSEMAN does guest vocals on ‘Secrets of the Black Sun.’ We’ve got INTEGRITY’s Dwid Hellion singing the chorus on ‘The Hunger’ and BLACK ANVIL’s Paul Delaney also doing a couple of verses on ‘Angel of Darkness.’ So, yeah, there are a bunch of people on there and it’s like a community effort which I enjoy. I like involving people I respect and having them be a part of the whole thing.”

After spending his entire adult life navigating the pitfalls and pratfalls of the industry for expressive and creative opportunity, Hill has amassed an impressive legacy, one that 'Under Sullen Skies' contributes to admirably and irreverently. Like most, the extreme music underground lifer and veteran is probably justified in approaching the future with very muted optimism, but while the world works at screwing its head back on straight, Hill is going to do what he wants to do as well as he possibly can. Uncertainty may reign at the moment, but Hill and TOMBS are still going to do their thing and will be content to please themselves in the process. If anyone else happens to be along for the ride, then welcome aboard.

“'Under Sullen Skies' is a dark and introspective album,” he asserts. “It’s not a happy record that anyone is going to use to get pumped up on a Friday night. We wanted to pull out the stops, go full-on and make a nice body of work. I could care less if anyone likes the band or not because I’ve been through so many ups and downs with this thing that I don’t give a fuck if people enjoy the music. I know I like it, I know the guys in the band like it and we’re just rocking and rolling. This record and the EP came out about as close as I could imagine to what I have in my brain about how this band should sound. The whole trajectory of the band has had each record never quite hitting, but 'Monarchy of Shadows' and 'Under Sullen Skies' have both really come out how I envisioned the songs to be.”

DIETH - Featuring David Ellefson, Guilherme Miranda and Michał Łysejko - Signs Worldwide Contract with Napalm Records

Austrian rock and metal empire Napalm Records is thrilled to announce its exciting latest signing - death thrash force DIETH - featuring the iconic line-up of Grammy Award winning bassist David Ellefson (ex-Megadeth), Swedish Grammy nominated guitarist/vocalist Guilherme Miranda (former Entombed A.D.) and drummer Michał Łysejko (ex-Decapitated).

DIETH have pushed beyond the stereotypes of their genres to create a charismatic new sound, one rich with inventive guitar riffs, tight drum grooves, technical prowess, guttural vocals and catchy melodies. Seeking new musical projects, the band members came together in early 2022 after being introduced by mutual friends in the music industry, and immediately began sharing creative ideas - shifting things into high gear this year with the release of their debut track, "In the Hall of the Hanging Serpents", and a blistering accompanying music video.

Following its heavy acclaim and fan response, DIETH knew the only way to move was up, and now plan to drop their debut album in 2023 via new label partner Napalm Records. The album is currently in progress with producer Kristian Kohle at Kohlekeller Studiosin Frankfurt, Germany, and will feature "In the Hall of the Hanging Serpents".

DIETH says about the signing:

"We are stoked to announce that we've signed a multi-album international record deal with Napalm Records, who will release our debut album in 2023. Their approach to music and devotion to metal made Napalm the perfect, most suitable place for us and our music. Last but not least, we would like to thank each one of you that are giving us this massive support. More info and details about the album will follow soon. Stay tuned!"

Sebastian Muench, A&R, Napalm Records adds:

"The term "supergroup” feels overused nowadays, but with the formation of DIETH, it correctly and justifiably describes the coming together of these three extremely talented musicians. The first single, "In the Hall of the Hanging Serpents”, underlines that the debut album could become a death-thrash metal masterpiece. Napalm Records is pleased and proud to partner with DIETH, to establish the band and make the new album a success. Personally, as a lifelong Megadeth fan, this signing is a dream come true."

Stay tuned for more DIETH news coming very soon from Napalm Records!

HOAXED, about their new single: "Horrible injustices are executed everyday and "Guilty Ones" is a reflection of what role we all play in that execution."

'Two Shadows' is out October 28 on LP/CD/CS/Digital.

Comprised of vocalist/guitarist Kat Keo and drummer Kim CoffelHOAXED's superlative blend of styles—heavy melodic rock with captivating hooks, gothic undertones, undeniable metal, and tinges of americana - pave the way for a singular expression that’s entirely their own.

'Two Shadows' is as unique as it is memorable and catchy. The record thrusts, retreats, and beguiles across its melody-powered and hook-driven expanse, with earworms “The Call,” “Guilty Ones", and “The Knowing” serving as the album’s crucial lighthouses.

Formed in Portland, Oregon, in 2020, HOAXED's initial songwriting plan casts a wide net. The breach opened up considerably as Coffel and Keo explored the outer edges of their musical influences and artistic aspirations.

After fruitful songwriting sessions, the twosome self-released their eponymous four- song EP in February 2021. Signaled by the whirring, diaphanous spell of video single "Candle Master", HOAXED caught the attention of Relapse Records, who signed the outfit in 2021.

As a live act, the pair has already hit the ground running, rocking the stage with Unto Others, Blackwater Holylight, and Amorphis, and being hailed as an “absolute riot on stage.” (Metal Insider)

WHO ON EARTH Premiere Music Video for "Black Swan" - Debut Album 'Blame' Out October 28

New Jersey hard rock quartet WHO ON EARTH have released the final single from their new album. The band has partnered with Ghost Cult Magazine to premiere the music video for "Black Swan", which can be seen below. The new song is the latest offering from the group's upcoming debut LP, Blame, which will see an October 28 release. The album was produced, mixed, engineered, and mastered by Mike Orlando (Adrenaline Mob, Noturnall) at Sonic Stomp Studios in NY, with Orlando also playing guest guitar on the record as well.

Speaking about the lyrical message behind the new song, vocalist Andrew 'Coosh' Couche says“This song reminds me that I can never fully prepare for the unexpected in life and that's just the way it is. How the hell I got here and why is a mystery, but damn it’s been a hell of a ride! I wouldn’t have it any other way!”

Drummer Joe D'Aqui adds, "This song really exemplifies mixing a funk-oriented rock groove with metal and adding a whole new level of hooks through the vocals.”

"Black Swan" was preceded by previous singles "Down And Out""Monster In The Jar" & "On The Brink". Lyrically, the track fits comfortably within the album's recurring theme of blame speaking specifically to self-blame, but not in a negative, self-punishing way. Instead, speaking more to honest ownership and responsibility for one's own bad choices.

In addition to the release of Black Swan, Who On Earth is excited to share the addition of Bruce Gatewood to the lineup, who replaces Steve Eagle on guitar. Speaking on joining up the emerging Jersey powerhouse, Gatewood shares:

“I was made to play in this band and this band was made for me. The synergistic loop of relationships within the band of Coosh/Pete (prior cover bands and forming WOE), Pete/Joe (playing together in PIERCED) and now Joe/myself (we’ve played in bands together since we were kids) is complete! Next up….world domination!”

Who On Earth will play their first show with Bruce next Friday, performing at EJ's Taphouse in Seaside, NJ on September 30th!

GAEREA Streams New Album 'Mirage' Ahead of Release Date

"...an album that’s simultaneously tender and beastly in both sound and substance, and one that expands and redefines black metal’s capabilities while retaining all the requisite barbarity." - Decibel Magazine (Sept 2022 issue, lead review) (8/10)

"...an emotional rollercoaster of a record that's going to sometimes make you feel sorrow, sometimes elation and lots of reflected longing." -
Metal Injection(8/10)

"If 2020’s Limbo was the sound of a band putting any doubts about their abilities – or their authenticity – firmly to rest, then Mirage is the sound of a band with nothing left to prove to anyone… except to themselves." -

Style: Cathartic Black Metal

Behind black shrouds of obscurity and desolation, the men of GAEREA deliver their odes in cascading maelstroms of aggression and beauty. Emerging from the age of pandemic to whatever awaits humanity next, the Portuguese horde remains on the frontlines of the next generation of extreme metal. With an EP and two albums to their name, GAEREA has rapidly distinguished themselves from the thousands of bands toiling away in the underground. Brewing their cauldron of sound from a recipe of pounding black-metal blast mixed with a touch of harrowed, reflective longing, many devotees of the darkened arts have flocked to their banner. With the emergence of third full-length album Mirage, those numbers are sure to grow.

Underground metal itself is a strange and cyclical beast. Trends come and trends go. But at no point in the genre’s history have we borne witness to what happened to the world in 2020. GAEREA met this challenge by releasing their second album, the aptly titled Limbo, to excellent world reception. In the meantime, they found the total suspension of interactive life as it was previously known to be the perfect breeding ground for further creation and making. As the troupe’s main songwriter elaborates, “I lost two precious years of my life, years that I would rather have spent touring and growing as an artist. But they were crucial for us, these years, because not too many bands stayed relevant and productive. The pandemic gave us the time to make the best release we could. All the promo-shoots, interviews, videos, we all had time to prepare for everything. Mirage was the product of a sudden inspiration. The basic parts were written over about two weeks.”

Such a stunning admission goes to show that art is fickle, and the artist is merely a vessel through which the sweet sorcery we call music may flow. It can mute itself to frustrating silence – or it can explode into being regardless of all consideration. For this band on the rise, it is most certainly the latter. Sizzling with ambition from day one, GAEREA may present one unique face to their audience, masked and enshrouded, but the truth is they have not remained changeless. “We are not the same band who recorded Limbo,” he insists. “We are more eager to take on the world. If the pandemic taught us anything it is that nothing is certain.”

This lack of certainty plays heavily into newest creation Mirage. As its name suggests, the inability to trust what our senses are telling us could be construed as one of the album’s central themes. Rather than constrict their art to mythological references or anti-religious tropes, GAEREA instead plumb the depths of the human experiences of isolation and suffering. “The concept, the subject, of each song is everyone, you, me . . . if people were alone together in Limbo, in Mirage they are truly alone. Nobody is truly real until they are alone.”

If existential dread could be turned into sound, GAEREA have carved their own philosophical path through its stygian tunnels. It isn’t Satan, demons, death, or even suicide that is waiting for us there. “What if people finally reached their goal,” he posits, “to end their suffering, and instead of dying they find themselves in a new reality, lost in a big city they were once a part of – they don’t know if anyone else is still alive. They are alone inside their own world.” This theme of being alone in a world full of familiar scenes, unable to end things and unable to reach anyone else, might well terrify the listener more effectively than any glimpse into the imagined hellscapes of our nightmares. Being isolated in your own world is the real nightmare, and GAEREA strum the chords of this horror with nuance and a miserable grace.

Boasting a superior production that threads the needle between clarity and causticness, GAEREA unwaveringly admit their loyalty to countryman and producer Miguel Tereso of Demigod Recordings. “Miguel is fantastic,” enthuses the band’s primary composer. “He comes from a brutal death metal background. I thought if this guy can pull off a punchy, modern, but still authentic production with a slam / death metal band, I wonder what he can do with a band like GAEREA. He has a vision for a sound, and that is what I really like. He is not a black metal fan, but it’s this very external set of ears and eyes from a guy who really knows his craft, and he brings all of that to our sound.” The fruits of this union are quite evident, as the turbulent moods of the title track are so wonderfully tossed between tension-building moments, and the explosive payoffs which set GAEREA apart from so many who try but come up short.

Tormented leads and building riffs sit atop some seriously explosive drumming, waxing and waning, on “Arson,” a tempest of moods and one of the album’s centerpieces. Emotion, at times sounding triumphant in brilliantly wrought guitar leads, is skewered by vocals that bustle with shattering despair. The dichotomy is magnificent to behold. GAEREA’s composer makes no mistake. “I want to hear the throat on the album, and if we are a vocals-driven band, I don’t want to over-process them during the recording. Striking that balance is one of the beauties for me in this record.”

In a world that increasingly elevates the shallow and the narcissistic, GAEREA pursues an artistic struggle of inward isolation, honest self-examination, and a dogged refusal to bow to the void that awaits. Thus, the persistence of their shadowed visages, draped in the masks which codify their anonymity while also creating a reliable extreme metal brand that fans can appreciate, especially in the live setting. “GAEREA are truly ourselves when we put these masks on, and we transcend into something different, and primitive,” he asserts. “It still makes total sense, and this band would not be a band anymore if we ever dropped the masks.”

As GAEREA prepares the release of Mirage, the world has resumed functioning, and as it lurches onward into its bleak future, one could stipulate that the pressure may be on to continue its rise amid the clamor of this renewal of activity. Does this challenge intimidate GAEREA? “We want to do better, but I don’t feel any pressure because we are in very good hands with the people we work with. We are building a strong team that really cares for us, stage-wise, promotional-wise, website and sales-wise. We are building a very structured confident teams that aims for the same goals we do. What I truly care about is continuing our ever-growing concept of the band GAEREA, and not becoming sterile, and I would not want people to be unaffected by our music. In the end we’re trying to express something within ourselves, and I don’t want it to be too complicated.”

The beauty of GAEREA lies in the directness and simplicity found within their florid tapestry of extremity and aggression. Whether it is in the less-polished aural dynamite of their self-titled EP, or in the lustrous textures of Mirage, GAEREA is building a mighty edifice of underground metal. With talons dipped in the inky blood of black metal and scraped across the flesh of human suffering, GAEREA is leading a charge into the future of darkness, and all those who find beauty and power in the dark side of existence would do well to take heed.
