About Steve Hackett
Steve Hackett joined Genesis at the beginning of 1971 and gained an international reputation as the guitarist in the band’s classic line-up alongside Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford and Phil Collins. Hackett’s intricate guitar work was a key element of Genesis’ albums from Nursery Cryme (1971) to Wind And Wuthering (1977) including the classic Selling England By The Pound.

After leaving Genesis at the end of 1977, Hackett’s solo career, which now spans more than 30 albums, has demonstrated his extraordinary versatility with both electric and acoustic guitar. Hackett is renowned as both an immensely talented and innovative rock musician and a virtuoso classical guitarist and composer and this was recognized in 2010 when he was inducted into the Rock Hall Of Fame. He has also worked alongside Steve Howe of YES in the supergroup GTR.

Hackett’s compositions take influences from many genres, including jazz, classical and blues. For his later studio works The Night Siren (2017) and At The Edge Of Light (2019) Hackett has explored the influences of world music. Recent tours have seen Hackett celebrate his time with Genesis including a spectacular 2018 tour in which he realized a long-held ambition to perform the works of Genesis live with his band and an orchestra.

The lockdown enforced by the 2020 global pandemic has proven to be a particularly creative period for Hackett. He began by releasing Selling England by the Pound & Spectral Mornings: Live at Hammersmith, a live recording of 2019’s hugely successful tour celebrating that Genesis classic together with the 40th anniversary of one of his most-loved solo albums. Lockdown also gave Hackett the opportunity to write and record two new studio albums, the UK Classical Chart hit Under A Mediterranean Sky and the forthcoming Surrender of Silence.

In 2021, Steve and his band returned to touring, celebrating the classic Genesis live album ‘Seconds Out’, on what was one of his most successful tours to date.

Alternative folk-rock troubadour Fred Abong releases 'My Way', final single ahead of 'Fear Pageant' album

“Purity and honesty in his approach that gets more and more intense with each track... like you’re riding a wave of energy” ~ Higher Plain Music

“Thoughtful, minimalist. The ghost of Syd Barrett watches over everything... ‘another sonic leap forward” ~ Real Gone Rocks

“An almost painful intimacy to his words despite the oblique phrasing and imagery he conjures” ~ Isolation Records

“An ascent out of singer-songwriter folk territory into something bordering on punk and psychedelia” ~ Fatea Magazine

“Beautifully raw, uncluttered and quite cinematic... Melodically infectious and lyrically mysterious ~ Newport Naked

Ahead of releasing his
'Fear Pageant' album - his seventh to date - via Seattle label Disc Drive, alternative folk-leaning indie rock artist Fred Abong presents his latest single and video for 'My Way'. Though just as impressive, this is quite a different beast than the lead track 'Father'.

This follows Abong's 2022
'Yellowthroat' album, recorded with Rob Ahlers (50FOOTWAVE, Kristin Hersh Electric Trio). Here, Abong - a Filipino-American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist - upholds his reputation for creating music that is a blend of “ragged Replacements and lyric-driven Bob Dylan” and “Elliott Smith with balls”.

Currently based in New Orleans, Fred Abong got his musical start in the 1980’s on Rhode Island as a drummer, bassist and guitarist in various hardcore punk bands. He spent the early 1990s playing bass for Throwing Muses and then Belly. He then put music as a profession on hold for academic pursuits, earning a PhD in Humanities and serving as a professor at various universities for eight years before returning to music.

Continuing as a solo artist, Abong's music has a raw and unpolished production aesthetic with an overall direct, though deceptively imaginative and oblique, presentation. Apart from his work as a solo artist, Fred Abong is also currently bassist in the Kristin Hersh Electric Trio and has also been a
practicing Vedic astrologer for the past 20 plus years.

"Unlike the Sinatra song of the same name, this is not a manifesto of self-determination or a reflection on individualism and world-beating fearlessness. It’s also not a send-up of that attitude or sentiment. My ‘My Way’ is, accidentally, closer to the subject matter (but not the sentiment) of the original French version of the Sinatra song. In the French version, of which I only recently became aware, the gradual erosion of marriage and love by the crushing boredom of mundane life is the focus," says Fred Abong.

"My ‘My Way’ is definitely a kind of self-portrait and a meditation on love and marriage. But it is not triumphant or regretful. It’s more about the mixing of romance and resignation than anything else. It also recognizes the omnipresence of death, both physical and spiritual. And it explores the longing, conscious or unconscious, for wholeness and 'completion' present in intimate relationships."

His songs are existentially and romantically focused, poetic, and slightly off-kilter. Detuned guitars, unconventional song structures, and a raw and unpolished production aesthetic characterize the overall sound. Fred’s hypnotic, sometimes gravelly voice adds to the effect.

'My Way' is out now across fine music platforms, including
Bandcamp, where the 'Fear Pageant' album is now available to order. On July 20, it will be released on vinyl or as a digital download.

EVE TO ADAM SIGN TO THC: MUSIC, ANNOUNCE 10TH ANNIVERSARY REISSUE OF THEIR 2013 HIT LP LOCKED AND LOADED

Florida hard rockers Eve To Adam have signed with THC: Music and announced the release of a 10 year anniversary reissue of their 2013 Michael “Elvis” Baskette produced and mixed LP Locked and Loaded, titled Locked and Reloaded. It will be available in stores on CD and also digital on 10/13, with an LP release to follow in early 2024, via THC: MUSIC and Amplified Distribution. Locked and Reloaded will feature brand new artwork, as well as remastered versions of all 11 tracks on the original release of the LP, plus 2 remastered bonus tracks, “Calling My Name” and “Victory”, which were both B-sides recorded and written in the same period as Locked and Loaded.

Pre-order LOCKED AND RELOADED: http://www.evetoadammerch.com

Originally released in 2013, Locked and Loaded yielded the Top 40 Active Rock hits “Straitjacket Supermodel”, and “Locked and Loaded”, as well as the aptly titled Top 15 single, “Immortal”, which has over 5 million plays on Spotify, with the Locked and Loaded album racking up well over 10 million plays across digital platforms.

“Immortal” was also the official theme song for WWE Backlash in 2014 and was used by the New Jersey Devils during their 2013 Stanley Cup Run, as well as being the official theme song for the 2014 Stanley Cup winning Pittsburgh Penguins. The track was also featured in multiple Major League Baseball postseason telecasts, as well as placements in NFL, Nascar, and ESPNbroadcasts. It was also featured in the hit video game “Rock Band”.

Formed in Florida in 1997, with Vocalist Taki Sassaris being the one constant, Eve To Adamrelocated to New York City, which became the band’s hub for years to come, before returning to Florida. ETA has long been regarded as one of the hardest working independent Rock bands in the US, releasing 6 full length albums, 1 EP, and multiple singles through a storied 25 year + career. From their debut, 2001’s Auburn Slip, through a barrage of fan favorite follow-ups including Queens to Eden, Banquet For A Starving Dog, and their most recent LP, 2019’s Ithaca (which saw the band once again team up with Michael “Elvis” Baskette), spawning multiple Top 40 and Top 15 Active Rock songs, as well as 3 different singles that reached the Top 40 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts.

In addition to decades of hit Rock singles, since their formation, Eve To Adam has built a reputation as a formidable touring act, in addition to hundreds upon hundreds of headlining shows and festivals and across the US, including appearances at Rock Fest, WJRR Earthday Birthday, Taste of Madison, Rock on The Range, Carolina Rebellion, Rocklahoma, and more. They have also played full national support tours with a long list including Daughtry, Creed, Motley Crue, Scorpions, Halestorm, In This Moment, Queensryche, Escape The Fate, as well as one-off shows and festivals with Aerosmith, Cheap Trick, Tesla, and many more.

In 2019 after a US tour with QUEENSRYCHE, (like most of us) the band’s momentum was completely devastated by the Covid pandemic, and they spent the last 4 years regrouping, writing and recording material for their upcoming studio album, the long-awaited follow-up to 2019’s Ithaca, with plans to hit the road again in 2024.

THC : Music and Films was formed in 2009 through distribution partnerships with Sony/RED and Universal, with releases from Black Light Burns (Featuring Wes Borland of Limp Bizkit), Chuck Mosley (formerly of Faith No More), Malfunkshun, Kik Tracee, Taproot, Switched, Attika 7 (featuring Evan Seinfeld of Biohazard), Dirge Within, American Head Charge, Oedipus, and more.

OPUS, Drummer of Dead By Wednesday, Releases Innovative 80’s New Wave Turned Metal Solo Album Titled REVAMPED! OUT NOW!

REVAMPED is a creative, fun and innovative new take on select 70’s and 80’s tunes. The record features mostly new wave remakes from the likes of Berlin, Missing Persons, Eddy Grant, and more, but also mixed in with some classic rock bands like The Rolling Stones and Blue Oyster Cult!

"These songs were hand picked from the soundtrack of our youth, the playlist that many grew up with and enjoyed. These are tunes that shaped an entire generation but then we literally just remade or better yet “revamped” them, all while keeping the integrity and essence of the original still throughout. REVAMPED updated the production on the classics and made all 11 songs more 2023 and well, a bit more metal too!" says Gerald Edward Pawlik, Executive Producer.

Available worldwide on physical and digital streaming & downloadable platforms via Mindsnap Music / Combat Records / Salt of the Earth(distributed by Von Artists Ltd./The Orchard) and at Tower Records stores. There is a limited edition cassette tape with download card available as well. For more info email: OMindsnap@aol.com

The debut REVAMPED (Vol. 1) features Opus, the drummer of Dead By Wednesday & Earth (former Ellefson, Altitudes & Attitude & Gargantua Soul of the 90’s), along with studio guitarist/solo artist and super shredder Joey Concepcion, both who performed & recorded all the music on this album. It was mixed and mastered by Nicky Bellmore (Dee Snider/Jasta/kings & liars) at Dexters Lab Recording in CT. The combination of Opus and Joey C. was also the duo responsible for the making of the ground breaking guest vocalist album Darkest of Angels by Dead By Wednesday, which came out on David Ellefson’s former EMP Label Group, and featured Brian Fair (Shadows fall), Eric AK (Flotsam & Jetsam), John Arch (Fates Warning), Rob Dukes (x-Exodus), Ceschi Ramos (Codefendants/x-Dead By Wednesday), Waylon Reavis (A Killers Confession/x-Mushroomhead) & many more.

“We might have gone too far with some of these cover tunes but we don’t care! It was so fun remaking these songs for the creation of this album!” says Joey Concepcion.

“Growing up a die hard metal head, I used to snub & hate on new wave music. Why? I don’t really know. I think partially it was my being “cool” age & also what heavy metal stood for at the time… sort of rebellion to all things main stream. However, I’ve always liked all different styles of music & feel that this is what makes a musician better & stronger. Lately, I’ve been vibing on some old school 80’s stuff… Which leads me to why I wanted to do this album," adds Opus.

CMT Listen Up Artist, Amazon Music USA “Artist to Watch,” and Pandora “Artist to Watch,” Frank Ray today releases his most unique body of work yet – his self-titled debut label album Frank Ray – via BBR Music Group/Stoney Creek Records.

Listen to Frank Ray HERE.

Produced by Frank Rogers (Brad Paisley, Scotty McCreery), Frank Ray seamlessly intermixes a traditional Country sound with R&B and touches of Frank’s Latin heritage. The album features 15 tracks – 13 of which were co-written by the rising star.

“Country has always been the music that’s closest to my heart. It’s always been like my comfort food for my soul,” says Ray. “With that said, it's also been fun to incorporate different elements of who I am into this new music. This project stays true to my heritage and upbringing, fusing a Latin flair, cool and funky arrangements, Classic Rock and R&B grooves alongside 90s Country inspired barstool songs. And there are definitely some high-energy party anthems to boot!”

“My intention was always to come into Country music with something refreshing, different and new. This album has always been my dream – to put out a body of work at mainstream Country music as a signed artist that isn’t just MY contribution to Country music, it’s also hopefully paving the way for other Hispanic artists to come into the format,” continues Ray.

Hot off a national tour supporting Old Dominion, Ray continues crisscrossing the U.S this summer, performing at some of the biggest festivals in the country including Milwaukee’s Summerfest (7/7); Nebraska’s MRL Country Music Festival (7/20); Wisconsin’s Country Jam (7/21) and Country Thunder (7/22); Colorado’s Ski Hi Stampede (7/27) and Ohio’s Voices of America Country Music Festival (8/11).

The star heads back to Nashville on Thursday, 7/13, to perform an album release show for fans at Ole Red – Nashville, in the heart of downtown.  The show is free and begins at 6 pm CST. For those that can’t attend, the album release show will be livestreamed across Circle All Access’ Facebook and YouTube channels. For more info, visit Ray's Facebook page here.

“Looking to stretch Country music’s cultural boundaries,” (Los Angeles Times) with a sound praised as “easygoing contemporary Country with Pop-Soul hooks and a dash of Southwestern spice” (Rolling Stone), the rhythmic project opens with the anthemic “Streetlights” that showcases his Latin roots, perfectly setting the tone for what to expect throughout the rest of the project. Followed by the catchy “Country’d Look Good On You” and lively, party-starter “Y’all Showed Up,” Ray cranks it up, illustrating his innate ability to cross over from country  into R&B and beyond.

Applauded by CMT for placing “his knack for songwriting on full display,” the kiss-off anthem “Somebody Else’s Whiskey” is currently climbing the county radio charts. The song finds the “smooth-voiced crooner” (Billboard) celebrating  the freedom and excitement felt after ending a relationship, knowing your ex is finally drinking “Somebody Else’s Whiskey.”

Intermixing fun and sultry Latin vibes, standout track “Wasting Your Words,” finds Rolling Stone’s “Artist to Watch” painting a vivid picture of how a couple keeps their spark alive, despite distance.

Ray also pays tribute to country music’s greatest legends like Dolly, George, Waylon and more in the nostalgic “Back Before My Time.” From the wailing pedal steel to the rollicking guitar licks, the good-time track transports you back to Country music’s glory days, before rounding out the project with “Party with Strangers,” which perfectly captures who Frank Ray is –  a guy who turns strangers into immediate lifelong friends.

NYC's ROMAN ANGELOS and esteemed producer SCOTT SOLTER present film for 'The Underwater Supermarket (Thierry de Mer Mix)' The full 'Supermarkets, Underwater' LP is out now

“Insanely cheerful and groovy lounge muzak. It’s fantastic... an album of splendid vibes” ~ Electronic Sound

"Far-from-ordinary... a delightful nostalgia-inducing instrumental exploration of movement and sonic fluidity. Highly memorable and grounding" ~ The Spill Magazine

"Pretty Glorious" ~ Stewart Maconie, BBC 6 Music

"Fluid and meditative, yet so catchy - taking elevator music to new lounge-loving heights, puts the thrill in chill" ~ Amplify Music Magazine

"A fun escapist collection of music" ~ The Electricity Club

"Guaranteed to stick in your brain" ~ Shindig!

Brooklyn lounge-chill artist
Roman Angelos and electronic producer Scott Solter(St. Vincent, Maps & Atlases, Spoon, Superchunk, The Mountain Goats) offer the latest from their collaborative album 'Supermarkets, Underwater'.

Following the video for the lead track
'Swimming Through The Aisles (Teeming Mix)', acclaimed filmmaker Mark Solter has created a music film for 'The Underwater Supermarket (Thierry de Mer Mix)', the album's closing track.

Recently released via London's
Happy Robots Records, this record sees Solter fully reimagine Roman Angelos' 2022 album 'Music For Underwater Supermarkets', a sonic dreamscape that transposes the mundane act of grocery shopping to an aquatic utopian landscaping. Solter flips the script, transforming the bouncy and upbeat material of the original album into a darker and more ambient landscape. Weaving in noise and shifting electronic percussion, this is an entirely new record.

Roman Angelos is the nom de plume of Brooklyn-based producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist
Rich Bennett, developed as a vehicle to explore his obsession with library recordings of the 60's and 70s, muzak and exotica. Exotic, dreamy, and wistful, this is the sound of a jazz sextet as channeled through synths and drum machines, creating a spacey feel.

For 'The Underwater Supermarket (Thierry de Mer Mix)' - a deeply submersive and eerie work - Scott Solter's twin brother
Mark Solter creates a dark and alluring visual experience, adding to the full ambience of the work. A cinematographer and director working in narrative, commercial and branded content, Mark Solter is a multiple film festival award winner, who has collaborated on a number of autonomous films worldwide and is currently developing several scripted properties.

"I viewed the idea of being underwater, a supermarket under water, as a flexible metaphor. Ideas beyond the threat level and adversity of an environment not normal to our function, but of events constructed or  self-inflicted, if you will, that result from the burden choice," explains filmmaker Mark Solter.

Roman Angelos adds, "It was a great experience working with Mark Solter on this video. He understood the nature of this piece immediately and it took little to no explanation as to how it should be translated to video. Mark’s work adds in another dimension to this music; the things that submerge us in life, not just the bigger questions, but our everyday struggles as well.”

Produced by
Rich Bennett at Acme Hall Studios in Brooklyn, the 'Music For Underwater Supermarkets' album was recorded live to tape, together in one room, by Colin Marston (Jarboe, Sailors With Wax Wings).

Rich Bennett has also been involved in a diverse group of musical projects, including outsider / 60s proto-punk group The Shaggs, dream pop outfit Mahogany, Brazilian funk group Limoncello, and Stereolab's Morgane Lhote (aka Hologram Teen).

'Supermarkets, Underwater' is out now, available everywhere digitally, including
Spotify, Apple Music and Bandcamp. With distribution by Cargo Records, the CD is available exclusively via Bandcamp.

THE ABBEY releasing debut album on vinyl

The Abbey are so vast and mysterious that they need to two lead vocalists.

Jesse Heikkinen was already a mystic presence around the Finnish music scene, but after belting out backing vocals for Fuzzifer, he wanted to try singing in his own band. And while Natalie Koskinen is still uses up plenty of her lung capacity crooning for Shape of Despair, she couldn't pass up the opportunity to sing with Jesse after listening to his demo with two members of The Man-Eating Tree.

The Abbey are named after a magical Italian anti-monastery. So it's fitting that their first album is a dark and heavy songbook of psychedelic doom metal. Blabbermouth called 'World of Sin' a "perfectly paced and weighted debut album", while The Progressive Aspect praised the band for having already "perfected the art of the earworm chorus".

'World of Sin' was released digitally and on CD back on February 17. Tomorrow, the album will be released on vinyl, including a special Dracula edition that's colored with red-and-black marble.

All formats can be ordered
through Season of Mist's online store.

Aleister Crowley’s Abbey of Thelema was located in Sicily, Italy, and functioned as ground zero for many of the occultist’s most complex and groundbreaking hedonistic pursuits. Here, Crowley codified his ritual practices and took his concept of “Magick” to new, unforeseen levels. He rebranded the temple as “Collegium ad Spiritum Sanctum,” translating to “A college towards the Holy Spirit.” But the Abbey of Thelema was not without its controversy: A young disciple died in 1922 after contracting typhoid fever from the drinking water. And a year later, Crowley was evicted by Italian dictator Benito Mussolini’s regime, yet the mystery and intrigue behind the Abbey of Thelema remain.

It was only appropriate, then, that Jesse Heikkinen, a veteran of the Finnish music scene and a solo artist under the Iterum Nata banner, branded his newest musical pursuit as The Abbey. Drawing lyrical inspiration from esoteric organizations, their beliefs and his own practices, Heikkinen and co-lead vocalist Natalie Koskinen (Shape of Despair) weaved ritualistic tales from the darkest corners of themselves to pair with music that is a provocative, alluring kaleidoscope of dark, heavy rock. The result is the mystical Word of Sin, The Abbey’s nine-song debut long-player.

The Abbey tale began when Heikkinen generated the sudden urge to try his hand at singing in a doom metal band after laying down guest vocals for fellow countrymen Fuzzifer. His idea was to form a doom metal band with “big vocals” — a project for fun’s sake that would thrive off writing from the heart and improvisation. Those plans involved former Sentenced and The Man-Eating Tree drummer Vesa Ranta — the first name that came to Heikkinen’s mind for the project.

Ranta, now a professional photographer and filmmaker, provided the steady backbone behind Sentenced’s groundbreaking career that was brought to its conclusion in 2005. According to Heikkinen, Ranta plays “like a battalion of marching giants,” a not-so-subtle nod to the drummer’s mastery of the quarter-note. Ranta quickly took to Heikkinen’s early demos and suggested they add a female singer. Enter Koskinen. Koskinen knew Ranta from a video shoot where she was serving as a makeup artist. Reluctant to try a new band considering her Shape of Despair and career obligations, Koskinen listened to Heikkinen’s first demo and decided to give the project a go. Janne Markus (guitar, also of The Man-Eating Tree) and Henri Arvola (bass) were soon tapped to complete the band’s lineup.

Word of Sin was recorded between April and November 2021 in several locations across Finland. Drums, bass and Markus’s guitars were tracked at Kratio Studio in Oulu by Kyösti Rautio. Rautio also served as co-producer and mixed the album, becoming the unofficial sixth member of The Abbey. Heikkinen, who recorded most of his vocals and guitars in his stepdaughter’s room, surrounded by My Little Ponies, Disney figurines and a pile of esoteric literature, is careful to point out that The Abbey fails to drop into any neat, little subgenre.

“The album was made purely for self-expressive reasons,” he says. “My music is the channel where I can be as true and authentic as possible. It is also a somewhat safe way to explore and express the dark side of myself and the collective consciousness. Word of Sin may seem like a tremendously dark piece as a rock album, but it’s pretty lightweight for a doom metal album! The material proved so strong that it was obvious that it wasn’t going to be another side project. I think using the means of improvisation made the music sound more like its creator instead of it being forced to be this or that — and that seemed to work really well for us!”

Regardless of where Word of Sin falls between the vast channels of doom and heavy rock, the vocal interplay between Heikkinen and Koskinen is undeniable. Each has songs where they take the lead, but their harmonies and trade-offs carry songs like “Rat King” and “Desert Temple” to the fore, creating a restless, captivating atmosphere resembling vintage rock from the 1970s. And, for his first go at singing lead in a band, Heikkinen proves to be quite the capable vocalist, carrying a smooth, almost airy delivery on “Crystallion” and “Widow’s Will.”

“I didn’t think of it that much — my vocals all came naturally,” he says. “I still think I’m more of a guitarist than a vocalist, really. During the writing and recording, I listened to King Crimson’s Red quite a lot, so I’m sure I got some influences from John Wetton’s singing on that album. The vocal harmonies were heavily inspired by bands like E.L.O, Queen and Yes.”

Heikkinen and Koskinen didn’t know each other before the formation of The Abbey. Heikkinen met Koskinen for the first time when she tracked vocals at his home studio, but their partnership generated immediate results. “Nowadays, I usually record my vocals at home, but in this case, as I had yet to meet Jesse in person, I wanted to record my parts at his place,” says Koskinen. “It’s very important to see what kind of energy is between the musicians I’m going to work with in the long run. It turns out that we are a perfect match musically. Later on, I traveled to Oulu to meet the rest of the guys [Janne and Henri] and I must say that we had a very strong bond from the beginning. Sometimes things just happen even when you don’t plan them.”

“The right lines for each were found really easily,” adds Heikkinen. “There already were dozens of vocal tracks in some of my demos, but every time Natalie found her place in the song, she added something new into it.”

The creative process behind Word of Sin proved so fruitful that the members of The Abbey are already thinking about a follow-up. It’s a testament to the material’s inherent strength and the immediate bond between all five musicians.

“The Abbey will most definitely be an active and serious project for me - I do hope it will turn out fun as well,” wraps Heikkinen. And closes Koskinen: “I do have a feeling this band will make a long trip together.”

Melbourne's Suburban Spell releases 'Falling Down' EP and video for 'Natural Science' - an exploration of crisp modern electronica

“Catchy hooks and delicate synth lines that soar... Stunning, deep, beautiful” ~ Auxiliary Magazine

"Fantastic... driving, propulsive, and unfiltered, examining the experience of “signing up to a life of suburbia at an early age, only to realise many years later that the suburban dream is all a fabrication"" ~ Post-Punk.com

“Catchy melodies and a subtle touch of old Xymox and New Order … Recommended” ~ Sonic Seducer

"Shimmering, smoothly frantic... freewheeling but taut... elusive but striking... one of our favorite records of the year” ~ Stereo Embers Magazine

Melbourne-based synthwave artist
Suburban Spell has released his new 'Falling Down' EP, named in reference to the long-term outcomes of bad choices and giving into guilty pleasures, along with the official video for his latest single 'Natural Science'.

Suburban Spell is the solo project of Peter Endall, who combines the austere beauty of Kraftwerk, 80's melodic sensibilities, driving rhythms and some noisy grind thrown in for good measure. Influenced by the heyday of new wave and 70's-80's electronica, this music carries the beautiful imprints of such artists as Ultravox, OMD, Visage, Jean-Michel Jarre, The Cars, Gary Numan and New Order.

Endall's previous band Schizo Scherzo was active in the heady days of Melbourne's 80's music scene, playing alongside the likes of The Eurythmics, Pseudo Echo, Real Life and Fergal Sharky. Having re-emerged on the music scene as Suburban Spell, he has found his niche in modern Australian electronica.

'Natural Science' is a statement on the weight of scientific evidence and the powerful push by doubters to challenge such knowledge based on baseless contradictory viewpoints. The video for this and the lead track
'Bright Gold Cross' were created by Dingo Cross Films in Melbourne, with production and direction by Paul Puccio and Cassie Dart.

Suburban Spell's music is a commentary on the fragility of suburban lifestyle, never-ending efforts to keep up appearances, and an exploration of society's dark and fragile underbelly. This music is also a commentary about Endall's own vulnerabilities in the urban landscape and the wider societal norms that interlace with politics, religion and pop culture.

"Falling Down is a direct reference to the longer term consequences of bad choices and giving into that guilty pleasure. The entire EP's lyric content touches on these themes. 'Bright Gold Cross' is about seeking redemption and how the church is a vehicle that allows you to hide your sins and hand out forgiveness at will and '12 Causes of Pain' is about loving for the wrong reasons. These themes are present across the EP and reinforce the Suburban Spell that we are all apart of. Musically, the songs are deceptively simpler than my previous work, a constant challenge for me is to adopt the less is more philosophy and I hope this release is one step closer to that goal," says Peter Endall.

"I have heard others describe Electronic Music as being cold and distant, but I've always found something warm and inviting there. Suburban Spell's music has a cold and distant overtone but, underneath, I try bring layers of beauty and warmth that weave in and out, creating a musical foundation of tension and release. This dramatic approach is nothing new in music; however, it is an element that I really enjoy exploring. The odd circumstances of my childhood upbringing and the religious cult that i was in during those years have had a somewhat quixotic impact on me and Suburban Spell, having been exposed to a belief system that was ultimately flawed with a very inconsistent set of values throughout my formative years. These challenges are constant references when working on the Suburban Spell project."

The new EP follows the
'Split Levels - Remixes' EP (February 2023), a series of reworkings of his acclaimed 'Split Levels' album, involving goth-rock / post-punk legend William Faith (Christian Death, Mephisto Walz, Shadow Project, Faith & The Muse, The Bellwether Syndicate), along with New Zealand's Robots In Love, Australia's Ontic, Pittsburgh's Tragic Impulse and Italian artist Kurs.

The 'Falling Down' EP is out now and available from fine digital platforms, including
Spotify, Apple Music and Bandcamp, where it can also be obtained on CD.

comments to this special release:

Since their inception in 1993, Oslo’s TSJUDER have been responsible for some of the most hate-filled ferocity perpetrated under the banner of TRUE NORWEGIAN BLACK METAL.

The band’s unholy fire was initially lit when founding members NAG (vocals/bass), BERSERK (guitar) and DRAUGLUIN (guitar) grew weary of playing death metal and sought out engorged levels of extremity to sate their increasingly profane ambitions. The time was ripe to inaugurate a ceaseless campaign committed to an uncompromising strain of brutally raw black metal, influenced by the primal thrash blasts of Sodom, Kreator, Destruction, Sarcófago and early Sepultura; black metal first wave trailblazers such as Bathory and Hellhammer; and, most vitally, Mayhem’s seminal Deathcrush, and Darkthrone’s game-changer, A Blaze in the Northern Sky.

Assuming the TSJUDER name, a moniker plundered from a mythical, murderous Northern tribe, various embryonic line-ups gathered around the all-conquering core of Nag and Draugluin, laying the fearsome foundations for what was to follow with two demos – Ved Ferdens Ende and Possessed – recorded between 1995-96. But it was with 1997’s EP, Throne of the Goat, that the black metal underground really began to sit up and take notice, the release establishing TSJUDER’s reputation as a blasphemous bulldozer hellbent on crushing the insipid and nostalgic in relentless blizzards of sub-zero riffage, punitive blast beats and blood-curdling screams.

Recordings for an inaugural full-length in 1999 were lost to a computer virus, but from the scavenged remnants of these sessions would emerge the Atum Nocturnem demo, an obnoxious foretaste of the group’s debut album, Kill For Satan, an international breakthrough slathered in slime-encrusted sacrilege. That damnable release saw the aptly-named ANTI-CHRISTIAN open his TSJUDER account, the drummer blasting a succession of gateways though the underworld, pulverising a punitive march to the band’s malevolent maelstroms.

Demonic Possession (2002) and Desert Northern Hell (2004) sustained the band’s focus on death, devils and destruction, while ratcheting up the production levels on a barbaric brace of flesh-strippers conjuring a landscape of frost-bitten wastes and foul abyssal realms. With the music press busy dishing out plaudits, the band’s burgeoning confederacy of fanatics were becoming desperate for some TSJUDER live action. Heeding the clarion, the band embarked on a full European tour with fellow countrymen Carpathian Forest. They also recorded a pair of gloriously powerful live performances in 2005, in Norway, which would subsequently be documented on the group’s NorwegianApocalypse DVD.

TSJUDER would take a deserved hiatus in 2006, with members finding other musical outlets for their creativity; Nag launching heretical black metal outfit KRYPT; Draugluin and Anti-Christian doing time with the thrashier TYRANN.

But it wouldn’t be long before the irresistible call of TSJUDER would exert itself once more. The band reconvened, reenergised and eager to make up for lost time, returning to live performances in 2010 before finally unleashing the mighty Legion Helvete (2011), a typically uncompromising comeback interspersed with pronounced Motörhead influences on punkish hyper-blasters such as ‘Slakt’.
It would be another four years before TSJUDER issued the merciless Antiliv(2015), a snarling lycanthropic howl of a record, heavy-loaded with vindictive black’n’roll swagger and lashings of buzzsaw guitar.

TSJUDER quickly set about creating the follow-up to Antiliv, but musical differences and protracted disputes led to a parting of the ways, with Anti-Christian bowing out after an impressive 20-year tenure with the group. Undaunted, Nag and Draughluin enlisted doyen tub-thumper JON RICE to provide the requisite drum artillery and continued to work on new recordings – fine-tuning guitar tones and sharpening mixes.

Then COVID-19 struck, the pandemic further stymieing the album’s release as the world tumbled from its fragile axis. But humanity is now benignly settling into its most chronic phase of perpetual abnormality and TSJUDER are steeled again to hoist their inverted cross above the barricades of conciliation. Their latest opus, Helvegr, is a devastatingly savage offering, one which fully adheres to the band’s eternal credo of “NO FUCKING COMPROMISE”.

Michael Ray, DIVE BARS & BROKEN HEARTS Arrives

THINGS MICHAEL RAY’S COUNTRY IS MADE OF
Dive Bars & Broken Hearts is Real Life in Six Tracks
Taking it from East Nashville’s The 5 Spot to 26,000 Fans on a Beach in One Week

“For Ray, It’s All About The Songs...” –
The Tennessean

Sometimes you just follow your heart, even when you’re not sure where it’s taking you. For Michael Ray, who grew up going to – and playing at – the juke joints and hole in the walls of Central Florida with his father and grandfather, he didn’t realize he was going not just in a circle but coming full circle until he’d finished the tracking sessions for Dive Bars & Broken Hearts.

Six songs, recorded with multi-Platinum CMA Album of the Year producer Michael Knox, Dive Bars & Broken Hearts traces a boy coming into his own, chasing life and girls, getting his heart broken and learning to man up, carry on and evolve. Portraying coming of age for Ray – and so many young men (and women) just like him, it’s easy-going in places, moody and dark in others; it’s almost a love song to being willing to face life as it comes, know there’s solace in the jukebox and a better day if you’re willing to reach for it.

“Life is sometimes a lot simpler than we make it,” says the dark-headed vocalist. “And we have a lot more power to accept what doesn’t work and grow, or to create the best possible life than we realize... And that’s where some of the best country songs come from. For me, Dive Bars is about all that, without ever giving up or losing your sense of the right thing to do.”

Covered by a lot of media including American Songwriter, Apple Music, The Boot and
PEOPLE, Tennessean critic Marcus K. Dowling summarized it best, writing, “For Ray, it’s all about the songs... Successfully navigating the honesty and precision required to age both gracefully and suddenly... his time inside of home and mind combined with the best of the genre’s decade long pop-aimed sounds and styles created appealing material.”

“I don’t know if it’s pop so much as ‘80s and ‘90s country,” he reflects, laughing, “which to me was pretty traditional. Keith Whitley, Merle Haggard, Hank Jr. – and yes, the Allman Brothers, ‘cause I am a Florida boy. Once Michael and I got started, I knew I wanted this music to sound like what country music had always been to me. Talking to the Tennessean, Marcus got it.”

Subtitled, “Talk of Willie, Waylon, wisdom and an ‘old-school country’ mentality highlight a conversation with the Florida-born multiple-time country chart-topper” pretty much says it. The profile cites Ray’s co-written “Don’t Give A Truck” for the way it “modernizes parents stoking their children’s wanderlust for frontier life by mentioning how his grandparents always warned his family members, ‘don't give a truck to a boy.’”

“There are pieces of me in all these songs,” Ray explains. “It’s how I grew up, what I learned, how I became a man... and how I was raised to always try every day to be a better man. But even more importantly, we didn’t shy away from having to man up and not just react, to recognize that you’re gonna make some mistakes along the way. More importantly, for me or anyone listening, there’s friendship and getting through even the tough stuff; you hear Meghan Patrick singing ‘Spirits & Demons’ with me, that’s everything life and country music is: temptation, melody, knowing better, getting tougher and being real.

“Setting this project up, we’ve been in some dive bars, the Grand Ole Opry, playing some really big festivals. All I know is everywhere we go, people are responding to these songs like they do ‘Whiskey and Rain’ and ‘Think a Little Less.’ When you can do that with new songs, that says something... But whether it’s just how good these songs feel, or the fact I’ve lived all of them and a lot of other people have been in the same situations, the live crowds feel like they know what I’m singing about!”

Recorded largely live with key road players from Tim McGraw, Kenny Chesney and Jason Aldean, Dive Bars & Broken Hearts is here. Grab a cold one – and listen.

About Michael Ray
Forged on the small stages of Florida’s rural communities, Michael Ray has created an impressive foundation. Four No. 1 songs – RIAA Platinum-certified “Think a Little Less,” RIAA Platinum-certified “Whiskey And Rain,” RIAA Gold-certified “Kiss You in the Morning,” RIAA Gold-certified “One That Got Away” – with over 1 billion global streams, over 650,000 album equivalents and over 150 million YouTube views, he is a true country star who’s performed at the Grand Ole Opry more than 70 times. Looking to expand his sound, Ray sought out CMA Album of the Year Award-winning producer Michael Knox. The pair have taken his brand of country to a new level for Dive Bars & Broken Hearts, Ray’s six-song EP arriving June 23 via Warner Music Nashville. Currently on the road headlining shows through the summer, he’s taking his music where it matters: to the people. For more information, visit

Tigirlily Gold’s Empowering Debut EP is Available Now

Sister duo Tigirlily Gold spent more than five years honing their craft on Nashville’s Lower Broadway, perfecting their charisma and songwriting while delivering four-hour sets, three to four nights a week. Now, after signing to Monument Records in 2021, sisters Krista and Kendra Slaubaugh arrive with their debut EP, Blonde, which Holler notes is “packed full of unapologetic sass, empowerment and introspective songwriting prowess.”

Listen to the EP
HERE

“To us, Blonde the EP is a Dolly Parton state of mind. It’s all about being bold and confident in who you are, empowering others and being able to poke fun at yourself when life just isn’t going your way,” share the sisters. “These four songs are the start of a full-length record coming later on. Blonde hones in on what it means to be unapologetically yourself while remaining true to your roots. We are so excited for this new chapter of music together.”

Born from those years spent entertaining the rowdy Broadway crowds, Blonde captures that energy while highlighting the girls’ versatile songwriting. Opening with the bold, confident title track “Blonde,” the sisters set the tone with the empowering girl anthem. Inspired by Dolly Parton, “Blonde” goes beyond describing a hair color, but rather depicts a state of mind while encouraging girls to live unapologetically.

“Hometown Song” vulnerably depicts the girls’ inner turmoil of both loving and hating the small town they grew up in. Hailing from Hazen, ND, with a population of less than 3,000, Tigirlily Gold toil with leaving to chase their Music City dreams, while simultaneously longing for the place they called home and being thankful to have left.

The latest release, “Move On,” penned by Kendra, Krista, Alex Kline and Scott Stepakoff, is a clever wordplay, urging a love interest to “make a move on, move on me” on a date night.

Reflecting on the inspiration behind the newest song off the EP, Tigirlily Gold adds, “‘Move On’ is all about being forward and confident enough to make the first move on someone you like. We wrote this one with two of our favorites, Alex Kline and Scott Stepakoff and really dove into a new vibe lyrically and musically with this one! It’s the perfect, funky, flirty song to round off the EP!”

The EP ends with “Shoot Tequila,” showcasing the girls’ ability to entertain with American Songwriter opining it, “packs an energy-filled punch that’s tailor-made for country radio.” The upbeat party anthem is reminiscent of the push and pull of a toxic relationship, nodding to the irresistible temptation of caving to the “bad influence” of a tequila-induced night.

Tigirlily Gold’s infectious personality and growing catalog of songs continues to endear them in the Music City scene. The girls most recently performed for the ACM Awards Red Carpet Show on May 11, followed by their Grand Ole Opry debut on May 13 and a performance on the Maui Jim Reverb Stage at CMA Fest on June 9.

Blonde EP Track Listing:
1. Blonde (Kendra Jo Slaubaugh, Krista Jade Slaubaugh, Alex Kline, Scott Stepakoff)
2. Hometown Song (Kendra Jo Slaubaugh, Krista Jade Slaubaugh, Alex Kline, Scott Stepakoff)
3. Move On (Kendra Jo Slaubaugh, Krista Jade Slaubaugh, Alex Kline, Scott Stepakoff)

About Tigirlily Gold:
Sister duo Tigirlily Gold has been playing music together since they could walk, and officially formed their band in high school. Growing up, they crisscrossed the mid-west, growing a fierce fan base and selling out amphitheaters across their home-state of North Dakota. After moving to Nashville, they landed a weekly residence at Dierks Bentley’s Whiskey Row on Nashville’s famed lower Broadway. Playing four-hour sets, three to four nights a week, the sisters developed a performance style that’s not only captivating and fun but shows just how much entertaining is in their blood.

After releasing their original song “
Somebody Does,” in 2021, the track topped the iTunes chart and Tigirlily Gold was signed to Monument Records. They released their self-titled, debut EP in July 2021, working with multi-Grammy Award Winner Shane McAnally, and hit the road with artists Walker Hayes and Ashley McBryde.

The 3 Clubmen (XTC's Andy Partridge, Stu Rowe and Jen Olive) release debut EP and animated ‘Aviatrix‘ video

"Modern pop, retro glam and many sonic explorations. Not far from XTC’s aesthetics, Andy Partridge and friends continues to stun with their vibrant harmonics" ~

Ringmaster Review

'The 3 Clubmen' EP order https://burningshed.com/the-3-clubmen_the-3-clubmen-ep_cd

The 3 Clubmen - a new project made up of XTC's Andy Partridge, Jen Olive and Stu Rowe - present their eponymous debut EP, along with a clever vivid video for their debut single 'Aviatrix' - a perfect match of sounds and images.

Recalling XTC’s later pastoral period, a touch of Jen Olive’s math-pop angularity and the eclectic sound that runs through Stu Rowe’s Lighterthief back catalog, this EP is an avant-pop delight offering a strange, seductive blend of experimental pop, jazz and sci-fi cinema excellence.

'The 3 Clubmen' EP is supported by the home-team, so to speak, being released via Swindon's own Lighterthief label with distribution via Britain's Burning Shed.

The 3 Clubmen is the culmination of a decade of antics from these longtime collaborators - all of whom are part of the Lighterthief label family tree - with the writing and recording of this material starting years ago. While each artist has worked with the others in some form since 2008, This is the first time that Stu, Andy and Jen have combined forces as a trio, an inevitable partnership once described as “a three-headed Frankenstein's monster dancing at a neurodivergent singles club”.

"I’d go and hang out at Stu’s bunker, because it’s better than ‘playing with yourself’, arf arf, no, I think of him as a brother and love being down at his place. He’d say things like, “Andy, listen to what I found, that I think we’ve forgotten, it’s really good” or things like “I sent this idea to Jen and she zapped this great vocal suggestion back.” It kind of accrued like inventive barnacles, or fungus, really organically. But again, lots get thrown out. That’s the nature of improv. It’s heavy on the reject %. Miles Davis and Can knew that," says Andy Partridge.

"Our three musical sensibilities seemed to fit together very easily. Jen and Andy’s voices blend really well - we can all handle a little dissonance and odd time signatures - and we were all really open to any possibilities," says Stu Rowe.

Jen Olive adds, "The accidental discoveries are the best. I also really enjoy getting a piece of music that sounds like chaos and making sense of it somehow. That was real fun for me. Hearing something that by all rights should not be a “verse”- and saying “yep, this will be the verse” It becomes a game. Makes me giddy. But this setting created a lot of moments that I wouldn’t have on my own. There are a lot of favorite parts in that way."

Best known as co-founder of XTC, Partridge is known as the “godfather of Britpop". His most recent solo releases include
'My Failed Songwriting Career, Volumes 1 & 2', various XTC re-releases, the 'Planet England' EP with Robyn Hitchcock, the 'Powers' collection of sound pieces, and the 'Gonwards' album with Peter Blegvad. He has also recently written songs for The Monkees, Miles Kane and others.

Albuquerque-based LA native musician-songwriter Jen Olive has a series of albums to her name, in addition to writing and recording for A&M Records and contributing music to various American Film Institute projects. Her latest solo release was 2022's Stu Rowe-produced single
'Two Futures'.

A key player on Swindon’s music scene, Stu Rowe has supported many artists as a guitarist, bassist and producer, including Paul Weller, Shriekback (Barry Andrews), Colin Moulding, Future Sound of London (The Amorphous Androgynous), and TC&I.

The Clubmen saga begins in 2006, when Andy and Stu first worked on
'Monstrance'. Riding on a mutual fascination with experimental music production,  a bi-weekly ritual soon emerged, starting at Stu’s Lighterthief Bunker and ending at the local pub, which resulted in sonic explorations and improvised recordings. A series of musical sketches gradually formed, setting the stage for Jen’s later involvement.

With interest reignited during the pandemic after being put on hold and largely forgotten, the trio decided to finish what they’d started all those years ago, resulting in their debut 4-track effort.

Signing to Andy’s label
APE HOUSE Records in 2008 (after recording her 'Warm Robot' album), Jen contributed lyrics and vocals on 'Up On Hi' and 'My Dream Sea', penned by Rowe and Partridge for Lighterthief's 'Trick Picture' and 'Hard Listening' EPs (released on APE HOUSE).

In 2010, the threesome were finally able to work together in person. The chemistry was instant, the room was buzzing and the ideas flowed. Over pints at The Roaring Donkey pub, they dubbed their project “The 3 Clubmen” after the local defence volunteer groups formed during the English Civil War. Clubmen protected themselves from both armies by fighting on their own side - the name seemed to fit.

After returning to the US, Jen released her
'I Say Love' EP (involving collaborations with Andy and Stu individually) and then 'The Breaks' album, a three-year endeavor produced by Stu and released in 2014.

As of June 30, 'The 3 Clubmen' EP is available on CD via
Burning Shed.
and digitally from fine music platforms, including
Apple MusicSpotify and Amazon Music.

DIFFERENCES Announce New Album, THE FAMILY PORTRAIT + Premiere Second Single 'JOURNALIST'

Spread out across Southern California, Melodic Hardcore quartet DIFFERENCES
was built from pain and loss while still being able to express power and growth through music and lyrical content. The band advocates for change by meticulously crafting and sharing their image and messages via music. Their sound brings energy to an exhilarating performance while exploring taboo and often not spoken about subjects ranging from drunk driving to their “no means no” stance on sexual assault.

On August 26th, DIFFERENCES will unleash their latest offering THE FAMILY PORTRAIT. The album which is being released independently delves into topics that the members have experienced both directly or indirectly via their family and friends, They do not shy away from exposing people who betray their trust when dealing with consent, the effects of loss, and substance abuse to name a few.

Today, DIFFERENCES premiere the music video for 'their second single, 'Journalist; on Dreambound's YouTube Channel. The emotionally driven music video was filmed by Ryenn Lyons and Gene Ramirez. Watch as the band tackles the very real process of grief and how it takes many forms as well as having hope, below.

DIFFERENCE's guitarist Gene Ramirez comments, "Journalist was written about a few different memories I have of my mother. When I was about eight, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and things got progressively worse with time. I remember vividly watching her become someone else as she lay bedridden at my aunt's house. She spoke like she longed for death, and quite often would speak to the picture of Jesus that was taped to the ceiling. Recently, my aunt took that photo down, but the outline of the photo is still on the ceiling in the living room. I remember not being able to accept what was happening to my mother at the time; at times she couldn’t remember who any of us were.

"Realizing now, I’ve written so many different kinds of songs, poems, and notes about my mother and there wasn’t anything else I could have ever done besides write. I am the 'JOURNALIST'. I wrote this song as an ode to my mother as well as coming to a realization that my mother was not who she was when she passed. I don’t know if I believe in heaven or hell, but I do hope if there is a heaven, that she’s up there waiting for me."

Wormhole hit a new level on Season of Mist debut

WORMHOLE play by their own rules. When they're not schooling fools at Nintendo or throwing on the odd Saturday morning cartoon, the band are out scrambling brains with a homemade combo slam of brutal, technical death metal. Or, as they call it, tech slam. For the past eight years, they've been fine-tuning their signature moves both in and outside of Baltimore. Now, with 'Almost Human', they're ready to erupt from the underground.

"System Erase" is the first song on 'Almost Human' and it zips the whole tech-slam experience into one tightly clenched polygon fist. Brothers Sanil and Sanjay Kumar shoot off lazer beams of glitchy guitar dissonance. Drummer Matt Tillett, along with bassist Basil Chiasson, pilot through two or three different time shifts before the breakdown comes and swallows you up with the slow, crushing force of a black hole. At the center of this vortex are the bottomless grunts of Julian Kersey, who joined Wormhole around the same time that the band signed to Season of Mist last year. Every one of Wormhole's superpowers come together on "System Erase", surging into one great big ball of pissed-off energy, like Samus charging up her arm cannon. There's no ceiling they can't slam through.

Here's what Wormhole have to say about the single: ""System Erase" explores man's need for idol worship", says Wormhole. "In this story, man's admiration for power and beauty has led him to spend his existence worshiping an entity he saw, only for an instant, eons ago. What of the entity? Did it even notice him? Does it care for man as man cares for it?

'Almost Human' will be released on September 22, 2023 by Season of Mist. Pre-save the album
HERE.  Pre-order it HERE.

When you invent your own genre, you can make the rules, and in space, no one can correct your math. If Wormhole’s excellent The Weakest Among Us was 50% tech death and 50% slamming brutal death metal, their Season of Mist debut is a veritable leveling up of the Baltimore-based act’s trademark “tech slam.” It’s the kind of record that can scramble your brain and give your neck a nice chiropractic workout; Almost Human feels like the future of extreme metal, dropped down from either outer space or delivered by Nintendo cartridge (more on that later).

So, what the hell exactly is “tech slam?” Well, the gleefully amorphous and unholy term comes from an ethos that guitarists Sanil “Noni” Kumar and Sanjay Kumar discovered and perfected over (probably) thousands of hours of Metroid and Doom games, as well as, you know, actual musical mastery. Almost Human, out September 22, 2023, is more powerful, more agile, and more confounding for pie-chart-enthusiasts than anything else that came before it. The sequel is always bigger, darker, and in this case, covered in much more pixelated space horror viscera. My Wormholio calculator puts their sound at 91% tech and 89% slam, with an increase in awesome stats somewhere in the 420% range. There’s also a clear emphasis on amplifying their dissonant death influence, the kind of eerie melodies that feel like being stomped on by Samus.

There’s a clear balance to everything on Almost Human: the songs are more adventurous while also being instantly memorable. No two songs sound alike, and that diversity in songcraft (level design?) sees Wormhole pushing and pulling along their tech and slam dials to figure out what’s best for the song; spoiler, it’s always riffs. What also becomes evident after repeated listens is how carefully the Kumar brothers understand a sense of place, humor, and a consistent vibe. This is still the same band that’s known for throwing on Saturday morning cartoons, and Almost Human continues to hammer home that Wormhole the musical entity is deadly serious, but the guys that make tech slam are not stoic creatures. There’s a warmth and sense of joy when chatting with them that only gets brighter when you ask their favorite Metroid game (that’s a question for a live show). So, what is this vibe they are chasing? Sanjay shares:

“The tech slam imagery is based on Metroid lore, Doom lore, and we haven't written a song about it yet, but Alien as well. Those three things are brutal sci-fi universes, so we're trying to embody that sound. The slam riffs, you can connect the brutal killing of stuff with the brutal chunky riffs; that's been a match that's existed since the nineties. So that's the slam part, and then the tech part was harder to fit that vibe, so we kind of do it differently. I lean into very dissonance-vibe stuff, like Artificial Brain and Dysrhythmia. I think disso-death and heavy, they aren't usually paired together, even though they should be.”

“And then as far as chasing the vibe,” Noni adds, “I kind of go about it two ways. With the Metroid soundtrack or universe, that vibe, there's some dark and gloomy atmosphere, but there's a lot of pretty imagery as well. We wanted to find a way to match that very pretty, kind of out-there sound cohesively in songs with a very aggressive and guttural approach.”

Like another famous sci-fi horror masterpiece of a different media, Wormhole’s shifting, amorphous style is perfectly suited to blend in and amaze just about any fan of heavy music. That’s The Thing: they can pull off whatever they want, but it’s always boiled down to that tech slam vibe. Do you like tech, melody, breakdowns, atmosphere, or dissonance? Tech slam can fill whatever void you seek.

If previous albums were early generation, lower-resolution visions of tech slam, Almost Human is the 4K reboot, where you can see every pixel of terror and awe. Wormhole are absolutely ready for their closeup. Prepare your worms and your holes, tech slam is here to stay.
