IN APHELION Shares Morbid Music Video for New Single, "Reaperdawn"

A new force is awakening, stretching the boundaries of consciousness, and devouring everything in its path. IN APHELION is now ushering in their sophomore album, 'Reaperdawn,' which is due on August 9, 2024 via Century Media Records. The black metal brainchild of guitarist/vocalist Sebastian Ramstedt (best known as guitarist and songwriter with Necrophobic) is now unveiling the title track along with a dark and morbid new music video, which is reminiscent of the devastating Heaven's Gate cult. Due to the graphic nature of the video, viewers must be 18+ to watch. The clip was created by F/53 films and can be found at THIS LOCATION.

"The title track is a straight-forward punch in the face," says Ramstedt. "Here we join the ‘Heaven’s Gate’ cult in their last hour waiting for the vessel in the sky. The whole album centers more or less around cults and sun worship, but this is right on point. Stay with us until the dawn will free us from our sins. The reaper will be sure to leave no one behind.”

Darker, stranger, more epic and progressive than admirers of his work were expecting, this new outlet for enigmatic and artistic expression emerged firmly tethered to the white-knuckle viciousness of benchmark, Northern European black metal, while also exhibiting a profound affiliation with both classic, traditional heavy metal and the black magic of psychedelic repetition. Based around a core line-up of Ramstedt (guitar/vocals), drummer Marco Prij (also Cryptosis), rhythm guitarist Johan Bergebäck (Necrophobic) and bassist Tobias Cristiansson (Necrophobic, ex-Grave…), IN APHELION have taken the uncompromising DIY route to their current status as new Century Media signees.

The atmosphere of “Reaperdawn” is a swirling maelstrom of obsidian sparkle and iridescent grime.

“Reaperdawn” is now available for pre-orders in standard CD jewelcase, gatefold black LP, and a limited Gatefold bloodred LP (red Vinyl), 300x via cmdistro.de and other retailers. Pre-orders can be found HERE.

The album artwork for 'Reaperdawn' was created by Sebastian Ramstedt

Aphelion - the point of a planet, comet or any other body in the orbit that is most distant from the sun.

A new force is awakening. Stretching the boundaries of consciousness. Devouring everything in its path. Ushering in the Reaperdawn.

IN APHELION could be the ultimate extreme metal adrenalin rush. The euphoric, black metal brainchild of guitarist/vocalist Sebastian Ramstedt (best known as guitarist and songwriter with Necrophobic), they formed during the grim times of the global pandemic. Inspired and enabled by long periods of free time, IN APHELION grew from Ramstedt’s creative restlessness, and his very personal desire to explore new territory that would be unacceptable in his other, better established band. Darker, stranger, more epic and progressive than admirers of his work were expecting, this new outlet for dark, artistic expression emerged firmly tethered to the white-knuckle viciousness of benchmark, Northern European black metal, while also exhibiting a profound affiliation with both classic, traditional heavy metal and the black magic of psychedelic repetition. From the release of debut EP Luciferian Age in the autumn of 2021, it was obvious that IN APHELION were a radical and fearless proposition.

Based around a core line-up of Ramstedt (guitar/vocals), drummer Marco Prij (also Cryptosis) and rhythm guitarist Johan Bergebäck (Necrophobic), IN APHELION have taken the uncompromising DIY route to their current status as new Century Media signees. After 'Luciferian Age' alerted the world to this new, maverick entity, they swiftly pieced together their full-length debut, 'Moribund.' A tour-de-force of whirlwind extremity and adventurousness, it received widespread acclaim and effusive support from the metal underground. Thrilled to learn that his personal mission was taking effect, Ramstedt avowed to commit to IN APHELION for the long haul, giving himself a meaningful alternative to his supposed day job.

“The original vision was to not do extreme metal at all,” explains Ramstedt. “It started off more like a progressive, hard rock thing, so some of the melodies on our first album were born in another environment. But it becomes very amateurish when I try exploring different areas, and I realised that what I am very good at is doing metal! In Necrophobic, I don’t really push my ideas beyond the usual limits, because we decided long ago to be death metal’s AC/DC and that we would never shock the audience. For instance, we don’t do palm muting in Necrophobic. We just don’t do it! We don’t do tempos over 160bpm. We also don’t do tempos under 135bpm. The concept is very strict. So if I wanted to have palm muting, different themes, and more beautiful, long, sweeping elements, then I had to do that in another band. I can say that all the IN APHELION songs are either above 160bpm or under 135! And they all have palm muting! [Laughs]”

While Sebastian Ramstedt is acutely aware of Necrophobic’s legacy and prominence in the death metal world, he has also longed to have a channel to let ideas that don't fit within the concept of Necrophobic thrive. IN APHELION is a sanctum for creativity where ideas are allowed to come alive and roam freely and as he prepares to unleash the band’s second album, Reaperdawn, he proudly states that he has brought the best possible comrades along for the ride.

“I wanted to have super dedicated musicians,” he says. “Like Marco, our drummer. I think he is one of the best drummers in the world, and I’m lucky to have him now. It was me and him that started this. Johan joined later, but I had to have him in the band too. He’s a good player but he’s also one of my best friends, and I wanted his support. Tobias Cristiansson was the last to join the band. He had been helping out as a session member on several occasions and it was just natural to ask him to be a full time member as it became clear that original bass player Dennis Holm would not join any further.

I wanted IN APHELION to be about really hard work and waking up every morning, looking at your instrument and thinking, ‘What can I be better at doing, and by this afternoon?’ I wanted musicians that be like that, and that was Marco. I could feel that he was the same as me.”

After receiving such a positive response for 'Moribund,' Ramstedt began to think about IN APHELION as a living, breathing entity with huge potential. Fired up creatively and determined to keep the material coming, he immediately began work on the songs that can be found on Reaperdawn, IN APHELION’s first album for Century Media.

“I started to write it directly after 'Moribund' was released, so the songs were written that summer,” says Ramstedt. “I knew what the other members of this band could do, I knew what Johan could do outside the Necrophobic box, I knew what I could do, and also my singing developed. I was not confident about my voice when we made Moribund. I had to try to sing a certain way, but now I know how to do it and I can push it. I can do what I want. Also, I knew what Marco could do on the drums. The drums on 'Moribund' were written on some digital platform and he just copied them, but the drums on this album were written /for/ Marco, so that was different.”

A spectacular leap forward from the already highly evolved grimness of its predecessor, Reaperdawn expands and outstrips the blueprint that IN APHELION laid down on their debut. The songs are grander and more epic. The arrangements are more intricate, but also more direct. The atmosphere is a swirling maelstrom of obsidian sparkle and iridescent grime. IN APHELION’s masterful blending of arcane blasphemy with grandiose, old school bluster has reached a new level of potency, as songs like momentous opener "The Fields In Nadir" and the woozily anthemic "When All Stellar Light Is Lost" further subvert the black metal ethos; with superhuman blasting and skull-rattling thrash tropes underpinning some truly euphoric and inspirational surges of melodic malice. Furthermore, the more extravagant likes of The Darkening and sumptuous finale "Aghori" represent a further sharpening of IN APHELION’s artistic blade, as progressive detours and ornate, elegant guitar solos are woven precisely into the band’s commanding blitzkrieg.

“I wanted to explore how far I could go,” says Ramstedt. “Maybe 'Moribund' sounded a bit like an offspring of Necrophobic, but I knew I could take this band much further away from the mothership! [Laughs] Some of the riffs and some of the guitar parts on 'Reaperdawn' are really fucking hard, and it’s all harder than anything I’ve ever done. Marco says that he has never played drums this intricate, but at the same time it’s all straightforward. So this is straightforward black heavy metal, but if you try and dissect it, there’s so much going on in it too.”

Tore Stjerna was asked to mix 'Reaperdawn' as the band wanted to distinguish the sound even more from Necrophobic. Sebastian also saw it as an experiment to combine the riffs of the new album that are very much inspired by classic heavy metal with the sound of one of the best black metal engineers of the world.

As strongly indicated by Sebastian Ramstedt’s striking artwork, 'Reaperdawn' is an album inspired by the phenomenon of religious cults and the predatory brainwashing that feeds their flocks. Mirroring the unnerving, otherworldly atmosphere of IN APHELION’s music, their leader has penned lyrics that delve deep into mortal conundrums, the sinister allure of the suicide cult and the truth that hides in darkness.

“The whole album centres around cults. It started off with the theme of sun worship, for the song 'The Darkening.' A lot of these suicide cults, these people really want to see the light. They’re not evil at all, they want to be closer to God and to see the light. But in darkness and in depression, you tend to see things in more detail. When everything is happy-go-lucky, life is easy and you don’t have to think and contemplate that much, but in the darkness you have to find some kind of clarity of vision. All of these cults, like the Heaven’s Gate cult, these people going up to the vessel in the sky to see the light, that is just the Reaper coming, but at dawn! So the title 'Reaperdawn' came from that. I wanted the artwork to reflect that idea, but to still look like a heavy metal album cover, you know?”

As he proudly states, Sebastian Ramstedt has dedicated his life to exploring the darkness. If the marauding grandeur of Reaperdawn is any indication, IN APHELION has become his most focused and effective contribution to heavy music yet. Built to last and hell-bent on glory, this band are taking extreme metal into a new realm of warped ingenuity, virtuoso skill and cerebral bite. From the depths of the underground to the edges of the cosmos, IN APHELION are hurtling towards victory, dogged and unstoppable.

“The plan is to build this up slowly but steadily,” Ramstedt concludes. “We’re all up for touring, but it will be expensive to tour as a small band. But we want to play as much as possible. We’re doing a lot of videos and visuals to reach out and spread the word, and I have already started to write the next album! I always say we should be on at Wacken Open Air in 2025, for us to take this somewhere, and I’m still aiming for that. I have big dreams and big hopes for this. I will fight for this band. The real work starts now.”

FUNERAL Announce Chilling New Album "Gospel of Bones"

In the shivering, twilight-stained expanse of Norway, where frost gnaws at ancient stones and shadows linger under perpetual twilight, FUNERAL weave tapestries of sorrow. The band's upcoming ninth album, Gospel of Bones, is a cavernous exploration of grief and resilience that's bound to echo deep within the hearts and souls of the doom metal faithful. Every note of lead single "My Own Grave" is meticulously carved from the raw nerves of pain, loss and solitude.

Watch the elegiac video for "My Own Grave" below

Gospel of Bones comes out October 18, 2024 on Season of Mist.

When the weight of the world presses down like the bows of a snow-laden fir, Funeral stand resolute. The Norwegian band are guardians of the melancholic spirit that defines funeral doom metal, marching to the somber tune of operatic vocals, crushing riffs and the relentless dirge of the band's founder and drummer Anders Eek.

Gospel of Bones is a journey through the depths of despair. The album was produced by  the venerable Børge Finstad, who helped the enduring Norwegian band intertwine their intense, personal narrative of life's mishaps with a wide-ranging vision that bridges the chasm between doom metal, folk-rock and classical music. This mournful soundscape is enhanced by the artwork of Tristan Diaz Bastie, drawing listeners into a world where beauty and anguish waltz in a tragic embrace.

"My Own Grave" is a harrowing scene of mournful splendor. Pounding drums, bowing strings, slow, chugging riffs and Eirik Krokfjord's operatic baritone lock together in a perpetual dance between life and the inevitable shadow of death.

Melancholy. Pain. Loss. Solitude. Those had been just some of doom metal main themes ever since bleak pouring rain and the sound of church bell in the distance gave birth to the genre on BLACK SABBATH self-eponymous debut over five decades ago. But how many musicians have actually been bearing in their very flesh those gut-wrenching feelings?

Anders Eek – FUNERAL’s founding member, drummer and indisputable leader since 1991 – doesn’t particularly see it as a badge of honour, but he’d be the first to admit that somehow, the “death and loss we had to go through over the years were extremely painful yet inspiring, as a musician and as a human being.” And indeed, ever since their very first rehearsal in a basement in their hometown of Drammen, just outside of Oslo, Funeral had been ridden with problems and tragedy. Originally inspired by CATHEDRAL, CANDLEMASS, BLACK SABBATH, TROUBLE etc, they very quickly set out to create the most depressing and slowest form of doom/death possible at a time when their home country was being hailed as the birthplace of black metal. They went through several labels over the years, only to see them bust soon afterwards. Plagued by recurrent line-up problems, they even lost two of their key members Einar André Fredriksen (bass) and Christian Loos (guitar) in 2003 and 2006, respectively, to suicide and overdose.

But somehow, Eek never surrendered, but instead overcame all those obstacles by releasing over the years a slab of classics, each with its own, distinct personality, from the utter misery of the delicate yet none-so-extreme 1995 debut album ‘Tragedies’ to the more melodic and accessible 2001 gothic/doom masterpiece ‘In Fields Of Pestilent Grief’ or 2012 symphonic masterpiece ‘Oratorium’. Still, after the 30th anniversary concert in Oslo, april 12th 2022, also featuring the original singer Toril Snyen on the track «taarene», “life got in the way” as Anders puts it. “Some of us had kids, others moved out. Even I had quite a lot of things going on in my personal life and, at least for a while, maybe less drive to keep on carrying on the weight of the band on my shoulders. I never stopped writing music though because it’s something I’ve always done anyway.

2021 sees the band releasing Praesentialis in Aeternum (something along the line of “here eternally”) as a “natural progression. Guesting on  opening track ‘Ånd,’ the first single off the record, is Lars Nedland, Sindre’s own brother of BORKNAGAR and SOLEFALD fame. It’s also the first album for their new partner, Season of Mist.

In 2020 Eek started writing what was to become the album Gospel of Bones, to be released in October 2024.

In 2022 Singer Sindre Nedland was replaced by the professionally trained baritone opera singer Eirik Krokfjord (specialized in the works of Richard Wagner), known from both the Norwegian Opera Choir, as well as having several leading roles in operas both in Norway and abroad.

Violinist Ingvild Johannessen also joined the ranks, and the band moved away from programmed orchestration, and recorded all strings analogue.. This time around also incorporating the traditional Norwegian instrument the Harding fiddle, which is a key element throughout the entire upcoming album, moving the band slightly towards a more «folk» sound, combined with the classical opera-vocals of E. Krokfjord. Hopefully building bridges between both metal music, folk- rock and classical music.

Roughly 20 tracks were composed throughout the Covid pandemic(9 of whom made it to the studio), and yet again recorded and mixed at Toproom Studio, by Børge Finstad.

Violinist Øyvind Rauset, from the cult Norwegian folk-rock band FOLQUE, is performing on 2 tracks as a guest musician, as well as Espen Ingierd, with his very distinct singing-style in the vein of John Lennon, Michael Gira (SWANS)etc from cult doom/death band BEYOND DAWN singing on 2 tracks.

The album also contains an instrumental cover song , written by Kjetil Selvik, and is a melancholic piece only consisting of harding fiddle and church organ.

The lyrical content of the album is an autobiography of life’s mishaps of drummer/composer  A. Eek, and deals with real darkness, misery, pain and loss.  A Gospel of Bones.

BLACK SMOKE TRIGGER Announces Long-Awaited Debut Album; Drops New Single "Sun Cries Red"

Black Smoke Trigger, the rising rock sensation from New Zealand, is set to release their highly anticipated debut album titled "Horizons" on August 2nd. Alongside this exciting announcement comes the release of their latest single, "Sun Cries Red," accompanied by a captivating performance video. Stream the track HERE and watch the music video below. Pre-orders for the album are available now, HERE.

Speaking on today’s announcement and their latest track, Charlie Wallace, guitarist of Black Smoke Trigger shares

"‘Sun Cries Red’ came to life while we were in pre-production for the album 'Horizons.' After the initial writing session, we stayed up all night recording the demo. Dan finished his bass part and went to bed, and the rest of us continued on in an alcohol-fuelled recording session. After going over and over the song, adding different layers in our AirBnb in Nashville, Dan burst out of his room absolutely pissed off that we had been going so long and so loud, which was kind of hilarious. We needed to finish the demo, so of course, we just continued on. A couple of days later, when I was recording the guitar solo in the studio, he said 'Where did that solo come from!?' which was possibly one of the funniest moments from recording the album. After explaining it was written when he was all pissed off that he couldn't sleep, he said 'well I didn't realize you were writing epic stuff like that,' it was good fun.

The song lyrically is about looking back at something that is important but neglected, seeing something in a shadow of its former glory.

Continuing the recording process, producer Nick Raskulinecz suggested we experiment by adding a string section to the song, Josh ended up writing all those parts and it took the song to another level."

"We are beyond excited to finally release the album 'Horizons', it has been such a crazy journey to get to this point and we poured everything we have into it."

Black Smoke Trigger continues to ride the high of their dynamic rock, anchored by the distinctive guitar work of Wallace and the commanding vocals of Baldrick combined with their pummelling rhythm section courtesy of bassist Dan Fulton, and drummer Josh Te Maro. Fast becoming known for not only churning out certified 10/10, arena ready rock bangers, Black Smoke Trigger are also quickly garnering a reputation for creating incendiary and often death defying music videos.

"Sun Cries Red" follows the success of their previous singles "K.M.T.L", "Proof of Life" "Perfect Torture" and “The Way Down”, the video for which saw the band perform atop the tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere whilst Wallace jumped off the edge, shredding a guitar solo whilst plummeting 630ft and has clocked up over 1.3 million views on YouTube. The release sees Black Smoke Trigger continue to deliver on their promise of high-energy rock music that's both entertaining and deeply relatable.

Prior to this new string of singles, the band put out track “Caught In The Undertow, the video for which was also a feat of extreme conditions. Filmed at Muriwai beach in Auckland, New Zealand and at a helicopter crash testing facility in a 3.6M deep pool, the whole band performed much of the song underwater creating a stunning visual that has clocked up 3.2 million Youtube views and highlighting the band’s dedication to creating unforgettable visual accompaniments for their hard-hitting rock anthems.

With the announcement of their hotly anticipated debut album, the horizon shines bright for these Kiwi rock trailblazers. Stay tuned for more to come.

WORMWITCH Unleashes Vicious New Single, "Godmaegen"

Blackened speed metal entity WORMWITCH will unleash their eponymous fourth studio album on July 26, 2024 via Profound Lore Records! The Canadian necromancers are now unleashing the vicious third cut from the offering, "Godmaegen," which can be heard below.

Wormwitch comments on the track, "This one was by far the most challenging to record. Major kudos to Izzy for not completely disintegrating while recording these drums. Everyone busted their asses on this and I like to think you can hear it come through.”

WORMWITCH sets out to combine a melodic blackened death assault with the ferocity and attitude of crust punk and classic rock and roll, jettisoning the burdens of ceremony and pomp that dominate the genre today.

The album can be pre-ordered in various formats HERE.

The cover artwork for Wormwitch's eponymous record was created by Abomination Hammer

Like black wings from an obsidian sky, WORMWITCH descended from the darkness in 2015, somewhere upon the rain-soaked woodlands of coastal British Columbia. Animated from the bones of several local punk and metal bands, the new entity set out to combine a melodic blackened death assault with the ferocity and attitude of crust punk and classic rock and roll, jettisoning the burdens of ceremony and pomp that dominate the genre today.

WORMWITCH released their first demo, 'The Long Defeat' in 2015, and shortly after signed to Prosthetic Records, under whom they released 'Strike Mortal Soil' (2017), 'Heaven that Dwells Within' (2019), and 'Wolf Hex' (2021). During that time the band toured with the likes of The Black Dahlia Murder, Suffocation, Midnight, Necrot, Uada, Bewitcher, and many others, earning themselves a dedicated cult following and international critical praise. In 2022, WORMWITCH struck out to independently release a string of singles and embark upon several tours of North America. After a busy festival season, 2024 saw the release of a six-song split with Atlanta black-thrashers Sadistic Ritual.

Now, with blades meticulously honed and tempered under the light of a feral Canadian moon, WORMWITCH emerges once more to offer their fourth full length record. Simply self-titled, “Wormwitch” is a statement of a band coming into it’s own - a revelrous celebration of devilish speed, searing melody and diabolical intensity.

In Hearts Wake Share "The Flood (ǝɔᴉʇsnɾ)" Video

Combustive and ravenously raw, the brand new single "The Flood (ǝɔᴉʇsnɾ)" from Australian metalcore band In Hearts Wake merges real-life devastation with vivid sonic dexterity. Releasing today via UNFD, "The Flood (ǝɔᴉʇsnɾ)" also features Parkway Drive's Winston McCall on guest vocal duties.

Another piercing cut from In Hearts Wake's forthcoming sixth studio album Incarnation, due out this Friday July 12, "The Flood (ǝɔᴉʇsnɾ)" snapshots the band's experiences during the 2022 floods that ravaged Northern NSW, with the addition of fellow Byron Bay native McCall, who adds ferocious gravitas.

Balancing pummeling arrangements with fleeting moments of austere atmospherics, "The Flood (ǝɔᴉʇsnɾ)" ultimately channels genuine fear and tragedy into a hulking and cathartic metalcore masterpiece. And, as vocalist Jake Taylor reveals, the return of McCall on guest vocal duties following his feature on the 2012 In Hearts Wake track "Departure (Death)" organically transpired during the aftermath of the 2022 floods.

"The Flood. Where to start?," shares Taylor. "It was February 2022 and torrential rains hit our home region in Northern Rivers NSW. Entire towns swallowed two stories underwater. Homes and lives were lost. The floods were biblical. My step-dad narrowly escaped out of a second story window by jumping onto a floating mattress."

He continues, "In the weeks that followed, I was out in Lismore NSW delivering emergency supplies with the rest of the band and I bumped into Winston (vocalist of Parkway Drive), who was helping out on a food run. We couldn't believe the destruction we were seeing, and yet at the same time, the resilience and strength of the people. 12 years since Winston's last feature on Divination and it felt right to reconnect and collaborate on such an important event that happened to our community."

Watch the video for "The Flood (ǝɔᴉʇsnɾ)" below

In addition to McCall, Incarnation also boasts a sweltering lineup of guest features, including Paledusk vocalist Kaito Nagai on Shishigami シシ神 (ssǝɹdɯǝ ǝɥʇ), Chad Ruhlig of For the Fallen Dreams, David Gunn of King 810 and Alfonso Civile of Heartsick on Michigama (uɐᴉɔᴉƃɐɯ ǝɥʇ), and The Color Morale's Garret Rapp on Shellshock (ssǝʇsǝᴉɹd ɥƃᴉɥ ǝɥʇ).

Throughout the lead up to the release of their new album, In Hearts Wake have been operating an official Incarnation Tarot-themed website that fans can visit throughout the album rollout for access to behind the scenes, exclusive info, and Incarnation announcements. And for fans keen to sleuth a sneak peek at parts of the unreleased track "Feeding The Dead (ǝɔuɐɹǝdɯǝʇ)," In Hearts Wake are currently offering a gateway to finding the song's stem files hidden across the internet. Collect them all and piece them together to get your hands on the full instrumental for "Feeding The Dead (ǝɔuɐɹǝdɯǝʇ)" before its official release! For more info, visit here.

Recently appearing at UNIFY Off The Record and wowing audiences across Australia with their Decade Of Divination tour last year, In Hearts Wake now turn their gaze to their new full-length Incarnation in 2024, with the band also set to celebrate and farewell their journey to date with long-time bassist and vocalist Kyle Erich this September. Spanning Newcastle, Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth, In Hearts Wake will also be joined by special guests PALEFACE SWISS, King 810, and Gravemind.

Ahead of the Incarnation Australian Tour and in conjunction with announcing Erich's departure, In Hearts Wake also recently shared a new single, "Farewell," with the track fittingly bringing to a close the monumental chapter for Erich and In Hearts Wake.

Portland's SUN ATOMS announces new 7" single 'Take This Love' via Little Cloud Records.

"Sun Atoms is a tripped-out opus packed with droning electronics, shimmering guitars, dayglo melodies and a deep, whispered delivery" ~ Brooklyn Vegan

"Swirling keyboards, chiming psych tinged licks and the foreboding attitude dashed vocals craft a foreboding and bristling concoction, it has echoes of the Mission, The Sisters of Mercy or the propulsive sound of Leonard Cohen‘s 'I'm Your Man’ album" ~ God is in the TV Zine

"Ebbing and flowing like Love and Rockets under a Spiritualized raga; the spirit of Bowie’s classic Moonage Daydream echoes through the band’s astral fabric” First Look

"Artistic leap into an enthralling intersection of post-punk, indie rock and new wave... a gateway for your consciousness to coast into fascinating sonic realms" ~ Spill Magazine

“Sun Atoms bend and blend through luminary influences Leonard Cohen, The Cure, Moon Duo and Nick Cave in an amalgamation that combines psychedelic, dark wave, and post-modern pop” ~ The Big Takeover

"Sun Atoms fuses styles and sounds like a long lost Basquiat painting found in deep space among comets and stars” ~ Maximum Volume

In a whirlwind of sonic serendipity, Portland psychedelic gaze-wave outfit Sun Atoms presents their new single 'Take This Love', a sonic odyssey that transports listeners to a realm of pure musical enchantment. The fun continues in the clever sci-fi video, created by Bradley Tuazon at Oregon's world-famous Airplane Home. On July 26, this 2-track single will be released via Little Cloud Records digitally and on 7" vinyl, previewing Sun Atoms' sophomore album.

Sun Atoms is made up of bassist Peter G. Holmström (The Dandy WarholsPete International Airport), vocalist Jsun Atoms (The Upsidedown, Daydream Machine), multi-instrumentalist June Kang, Mars de Ponte (LoveBomb Go-Go), L.A. drummer Eric Rubalcava and Boise native Derek Spencer Longoria-Gomez (Hi Hazel).

Mixed by iconic producer Jagz Kooner (Massive Attack, Primal Scream, Oasis, Garbage) and mastered by Keith Tenniswood (Spiritualized, Death In Vegas), 'Take This Love' stands as a testament to Sun Atoms' commitment to musical innovation and creativity with Jsun Atoms delving into introspective realms, while pondering the “hieroglyphs in bright lights” illuminated by the desert stars. Its lyrical crowning blow lies in the line “take this love and shove it up your heart”.

'Take This Love' came to life in the wee hours of the morning following a transformative show in the enigmatic locale of Pioneertown. Once at Joshua Tree Recording Studios, the band found themselves ensconced in a creative fervor at 3am, recorded by Tommy Dietrick (The Brian Jonestown Massacre, David J, Mark Gardener, Smallstone, Sky Parade). As the desert sands whispered ancient mysteries, the band delved into uncharted territory, forging a unique sonic tapestry that transcends convention.
.
“We thought we'd be back earlier in the night, but hanging with friends after the show pushed us back a few hours. When we arrived at the studio, the house kit was already set up for our drummer, Eric. He and Tommy captured a driving thunderous rhythm, perfectly accenting the sequencing pattern June Kang brought in on the MPC. Peter came up with another one of his brilliant, hooky-pirate bass lines while our guitarist Derek tightroped the threshold of melody and fuzz. Enigmatic Martian muse Mars de Ponte added a celestial touch with ear-worm guitar leads and ethereal keys that linger long past the final chord. Peter later doubled the lead guitar line with a toy xylophone and Portland vocalist Allison Green (The Black Doors) also added her signature rich texture to the vocals," explains Jsun Adams.

Venturing into strange new sonic frontiers, the B-side 'And The Lion Saw The UFO' emerges as a sci-fi cautionary tale, resonating with experimental Krautrock beats and psychedelic textures. Initially recorded with Eric Crespo of experimental psych outfit Abronia, and featuring the illustrious Gregg Williams (Sheryl Crow, The Dandy Warhols) on hand drums, this auditory odyssey delves into dreamlike reverie, blurring the line between reality and imagination.

Meticulously crafted and imbued with cosmic energy, Sun Atoms' music captivates the senses, operating beyond the boundaries of sound and space. A genre-defying fusion of psychedelic rock, indie pop and post-punk, Sun Atoms push the boundaries of their own sonic exploration, inviting listeners on a musical escapade that defies categorization.

"From the start, 'Take This Love' captivated my ears with its mesmerizing rhythm and unapologetically bold lyrics. While the themes of love are familiar, Jason's lyrics always carry an element of surprise. The line "hieroglyphs in bright lights" inspired the wild idea of interdimensional love, a concept that, though unconventional, highlights the transcendent nature of love—a connection we can sense even without a shared language. Our idea was ambitious but the best way to visualize the song was through the story of two inter-dimensional beings trying to find each other," says video producer Bradley Tuazon.

"I had always wanted to film at the airplane home in Hillsboro, and this video's concept was perfect for it. Bruce Campbell (owner of the Airplane Home) kindly allowed us to film there. We didn’t really have a budget so we had to maximize our visuals with what was available to us. The location aided us in creating something fun, memorable and off the wall. From start to finish, we had just under a month to finalize storyboards, make costumes, and figure out logistics on top of our full-time jobs. This is the fifth production our crew has done this year, and I'm humbled each time we come together to create something special."

Earlier this year, Sun Atoms released their 'Ceiling Tiles' single on 7-inch vinyl, featuring the new wave-inspired single 'Ceiling Tiles' and the charismatic B-side (a unique fuzzed-out tribute to Leonard Cohen) called 'Tower of Song (in the key of JAMC)'. They also played a series of sold-out concerts with Dinosaur Jr. and shows with Federale, The Veldt and TREMOURS, in addition to playing Seagaze Festival and Treefort Festival, where they shared the stage with Ty Segall, A Place To Bury Strangers, Neko Case and Built To Spill.

The band debuted in 2021 with the album 'Let There Be Light', produced by Peter G. Holmström and mixed by iconic producer Stephen Street (Blur, The Smiths, The Cranberries), which involving contributions by The Black Angels’ Alex Maas, The Vandelles' Jasno Swarez  and Gregg Williams (Sheryl Crow, Blitzen Trapper). Since then, Sun Atoms has also played shows with Modest Mouse, Fishbone, Besnard Lakes, The Veldt and New Candys, and has shared the stage with the Allah Las, Broncho and Night Beats.

On July 26, 'Take This Love' will be released on 7-inch vinyl and fine digital platforms, including Apple Music, Spotify and Bandcamp. In the meantime, the 'Ceiling Tiles' single is also available on beautiful 7" vinyl.

BILL LEEB (Front Line Assembly, Delerium) releases 'Terror Forms' feat. SHANNON HEMMETT (ACTORS, LEATHERS), first single from debut album

"Bill Leeb's 'Terror Forms’ is a frenzy-filled dose of sonic adrenaline that is infectious and, paradoxically, suitable for the dancefloor. All the better due to the fact that this track also brings in tandem vocals by another brilliant Vancouver artist – namely Shannon Hemmett... Is dystopian bliss a thing? They could be on to something big here" ~ The Spill Magazine

"Instantly recognizable, but “Terror Forms” still sounds like something unmistakably new... Shannon Hemmett adds an ethereal vocal presence to the sinister synthetic soundscape" ~ Rock and Roll Fables

Beguiling industrial-electronic music legend Bill Leeb presents ‘Terror Forms’, the first taste of his debut solo album 'Model Kollapse', to be released via US-based label Metropolis Records. Introducing this record, this song reflects the dystopian, nihilistic world we have created in so many different ways, ultimately asking the question "When will the human voice be lost to AI and technology....or will that be what saves us in the end?"

Based in Vancouver, Bill Leeb is the mastermind behind highly influenitial electro-industrial scene mainstays Front Line Assembly and ambient-pop duo Delerium, having gotten his start with Skinny Puppy (under the pseudonym Wilhelm Schroeder). He is also a key member of other occasional recording projects, including Noise Unit, Intermix and Cyberaktif.

‘Terror Forms’, which features Shannon Hemmett of Vancouver post-punk quartet ACTORS and her solo project LEATHERS, explores the intricacies of artificial intelligence and the very survival of humanity itself.

‘Model Kollapse’ marks Leeb's first solo venture since the mid-80s days of Front Line Assembly, when he used to make recordings in his bedroom and released them on limited edition cassette format.  This album also involves contributions by LA-based artist Mimi Page, a long-term Delerium collaborator, and Jason Corbettof ACTORS and Jacknife Sound Studio.

Almost four decades on, his new album was recorded and produced in Vancouver, Toronto and Los Angeles with assistance from Vancouver/Toronto-based production duo Dream Bullet and long-term FLA/Delerium cohort Rhys Fulber, plus regular mixing engineer Greg Reely.

Hard-edged yet melodic, danceable and very much song-oriented rather than soundscape-driven, the 'Model Kollapse' album carries traces of hard-edged electronic dance music pioneers such as Front 242, DAF, KMFDM and Skinny Puppy, as well as his own oeuvre. However, it also displays the influence that acts like these had on latter day artists such as Gesaffelstein and ADULT, not to mention music that came to be known as darkwave.

Earlier, Nina Heckman of Metropolis Records shared, "Bill Leeb has had a prolific career as a founding member of Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly and Delerium. His music has been highly influential, and we are excited to see what this new chapter in his career will bring for him and his listeners. I'm honored to fulfill my father's (Dave Heckman) lifelong vision and to be doing this project with a lifelong family friend I can honestly call family (Bill Leeb).  This project is near and dear to all of our hearts here at Metropolis and I know it would make my father proud."  Tragically, Dave Heckman died in the summer of 2022.

Leeb shares, “Metropolis Records have been and are one of the most important labels for alternative music on this planet and this album was made possible by my long-standing friendship with Dave Heckman (RIP), who continuously supported us through the ages and gave us complete artistic freedom”.

Back in 1987, Leeb formed Delerium as a side project, exploring dark ethereal ambient trance, voiceless soundscapes and electronic pop music. Since their debut 1994 'Semantic Spaces' album, Delerium has received two Juno awards and enjoyed many collaborations, involving with Leigh Nash (Sixpence None the Richer), Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance), Kirsty Hawkshaw (Opus III), Emily Haines (Metric), Jacqui Hunt (Single Gun Theory), Matthew Sweet and Kristy Thirsk (Rose Chronicles). Their worldwide hit 'Silence' with Sarah McLachlan reached #1 in numerous countries, its remixes also hailed among the greatest trance songs of all time (the Tiësto remix was voted the 12th-greatest dance track of all time by Mixmag readers).

‘Terror Forms’ is out now everywhere digitally. On September 13, the full ‘Model Kollapse’ album will be released on vinyl and CD, as well as digitally.

VESTIGE Find A Way Through Wreckage on "Corrosion"

VESTIGE are fresh on the scene, but the French band are made of raw emotions. Formed amidst a tumultuous period in the life of vocalist and guitarist Théodore Rondeau, the band weave intense layers of feeling into evocative, atmospheric post-metal on their debut album. "Corrosion", the second single off Janis, is an anthem for those who have lost their way but still have faith that they will find themselves again.

Watch the mesmerizing video for "Corrosion" Below.

Janis comes out September 6, 2024 on Season of Mist.

"Corrosion" opens with a somber guitar riff. The drums come in, adding an extra layer of depth and emotion. The lyrics speak of hope in the face of despair, how love has the power to heal our wounds. Théodore’s vocals are soft and haunting, only to harden as the band switches into a more aggressive style.

Each song on Janis narrates a step in Theodore's journey through depression, from pain to redemption. By embracing modern metal, Vestige dissolve those fears and transform them into catharsis and beauty.

The video for "Corrosion" was directed by  Mathieu Ezan, who's also worked with Cult of Luna and Hans Zimmer.

Théodore Rondeau, the creative initiator behind VESTIGE, embarked on a journey of forming the band during a turbulent phase in his life. Emerged as a creative vessel for a complicated emotional journey, the band transcends the boundaries of individual therapy into a collaborative force that hopefully resonates with the feelings that may be all too common for the human experience.

With a profound connection to their craft, VESTIGE pour their souls into their debut album, infusing it with a captivating blend of melancholy, desperation, and catharsis. The music serves not only as an expression of their turmoil, but as a conduit for listeners to navigate the complexities of their own emotions. Through this process, VESTIGEbecomes a project with the potential to connect with people on a profound level, forging a collective experience through the universal language of music.

The formation of VESTIGE’s lineup reads like a musical destiny unfolding: Pierre-André Krauzer on the bass, Quentin Regnault on drums, and Théodore on vocals and guitar. They first crossed paths during their tenure in Naraka, a band that shared stages with icons like Cradle of Filth and Alcest. This initial connection laid the groundwork for the formation of the band. Not long after, the addition of Thomas Petit on the second guitar solidified the lineup, bringing a sense of completeness to the ensemble. The band’s sonic identity now established; VESTIGE was ready to share this experience with the world.

The signing with Season of Mist brings the band’s first milestone, allowing VESTIGE to share their journey in the form of their debut album, Janis. Poised for release in late 2024, the album is a culmination of their collective efforts and a statement of the band’s arrival in the heavy music scene. Weaving through atmospheric shoegaze textures, melodic landscapes and intense, tormented moments that reflects the emotional spectrum of the human experience, the band established a foothold into the genre of modern metal.

Beyond the studio, VESTIGE is gearing up for a series of live performance in 2024, setting the stage for an introspective musical experience that brings raw and authentic energy. A cathartic release that pulls in the listener into the emotional depths the band has to bring.

1349 Announce New Album 'The Wolf and The King'

Born from the frost-bitten landscapes of Norway, 1349 are returning to claim the throne of black metal supremacy. Their upcoming eighth album, The Wolf and The King, is proof of their unwavering dedication to the genre's darkest depths. Lead single "Shadow Point" captures the raw, unfiltered sound that has defined the band's legacy.

The Wolf and The King is a monument of black metal mastery. 1349's new album album is an eight-track odyssey recorded at Amper Tone in Oslo and New Constellation R.M.P. in Orlando, produced and mixed by the relentless duo Ravn and Jarrett Pritchard. These eight songs do more than just push boundaries; they shatter them, exploring themes of transformation through destruction, liberation and mind expansion.

Each song on The Wolf and The King is a portal into realms where shadows reign and chaos is the only order. "Shadow Point" enhances 1349's ferocity with unrelenting grooves and complex headbanging riffs that echo the haunting chills of the abyss. From the menacing "The God Devourer" to the cataclysmic "Fatalist", the band imbues the album with apocalyptic elegance. The previously released "Ash of Ages" merges thrash influences with black metal intensity, while "Inferior Pathways" forms an indomitable backbone of unforgiving riffs and demonic rhythms.

"Shadow Point" is just the beginning of The Wolf and the King's aural assault. Kneel into the void and bow to the relentless fury of 1349's blackened artistry.

1349 is not like other bands. It’s not a group of friends who decided to make music together. 1349 is a band formed with a unified vision and specific purpose: To maintain the legacy of black metal.

“I didn’t like the direction that black metal took in the mid part of the ’90s,” 1349 vocalist and mastermind Ravn recalls. “It started losing everything that I liked about black metal—the grimness, the eeriness, the primal emotions that captivated me and brought me into that sphere. You had all these synthesizer-based bands dressing up in pirate shirts and looking like goths. It ruined something that I truly hold close to my heart.”

In 1997, Ravn formed 1349 and recruited bassist Seidemann and, now former, guitarist Tjalve to help him pursue the vision of recapturing the original spirit of black metal. The longstanding lineup of Ravn, Seidemann, guitarist Archaon, and drummer Frost (also of Satyricon) has been in place since 2001. “I found people that felt the same way as me,” Ravn says of his bandmates. “We wanted to bring back the trademark of Norwegian black metal, as it was presented in the early 90s. Every time we release an album, that’s the inspiration and the backdrop.”

The Wolf and the King is the latest sortie in that crusade.1349’s eighth album sees the Oslo-based band harnessing the primordial energy of black metal’s decade-defining second wave and channeling it through ancient mysteries and the relentless global chaos of the 2020s.

The album title comes from a classic alchemical allegory: A wolf devours a king. Then the wolf is devoured by flames, and a new king rises from the ashes. “When I first heard about alchemy when I was young, it was people turning metal into gold,” Ravn says. “Further down the road, through various literatures and magical practices, I realized that what you’re turning into gold is metaphorical. It’s about personal development, basically. You want to be the best you can be, and that’s what we try to do as well. We try to top ourselves, to kill our egos in order to grow as persons. If you don’t do that, you will die. You will not rise from the ashes.”

Lead single “Ash of Ages” combines thrash with extreme metal flourishes and a proper doomsday theme. “The song is based on a story I read about a layer of ash that covered the Earth 12,000 years ago,” Ravn explains. “This layer of ash comes from a meteorite that struck the Earth during the Ice Age. It melted a lot of the ice, which is where the Great Flood came from. The Great Flood is in the Bible, but it was written about in every ancient culture. The theory is that it washed away a lot of other ancient cultures that held a higher intelligence level than those that were found after the flood. So, it possibly set human civilization back many thousands of years.”

Released as a one-sided maxi-12” with a flipside etching by Jordan Barlow—who did all the artwork for The Wolf and the King (as well as the band’s 2019 album, The Infernal Pathway)—“Ash of Ages” is also a warning to check your ego. “To think that you’re important, that you’re anything but an ant down there, is futile,” Ravn points out. “In the end, everything will be washed away, and nothing will be left.”

“Shadow Point” comes complete with a video and revisits the sonic domain of The Infernal Pathway with a classic headbanger groove. “This one references the Star of Algol, or ‘the Demon Star,’” Ravn offers. “It’s actually two stars that revolve around each other, and the small one is devouring the big one. Human beings have seen this star from early ages, and it has had many names over the years. It’s a known part of the magical world, so I wanted to include it in a song.”

Shot through with menace and a snaky groove, album opener “The God Devourer” will also have a video. “The lyrics are based on the alchemical principle of devouring all that you feel is in your way of becoming a better human,” Ravn says. “It sets the ominous tone for the whole album.”

Recorded at Amper Tone in Oslo, Norway, and New Constellation R.M.P. in Orlando, Florida, The Wolf and the King was produced and mixed by Ravn and Jarrett Pritchard (Eulogy, Pulchra Morte), the band’s long-standing sonic wizard who also worked on their previous two albums. The lyrics were written by the band’s longtime wordsmith, Svartalv, who has been working with 1349 for twenty years.

Jordan Barlow’s elaborate artwork for The Wolf and the King reflects the album’s chronological position in 1349’s discography. “This is our eighth album, and the artwork and lyrics are filled with references to this number of infinity,” Ravn explains. “You can basically go on a quest finding references to the number in the artwork.”

All told, The Wolf and the King is the exalted output of the joint force that is 1349. “We all work together to make the best black metal possible every time we release an album,” Ravn says. “This is our common goal. We’re a band on a mission.”

About Koe Wetzel
Koe Wetzel never met a genre wall he couldn’t tear down: The Texas singer-songwriter has earned a rabid audience for his songs that mix country, rock, hip-hop, and even Nineties grunge. His 2016 album Noise Complaint endeared him to fans with its no- holds-barred lyrics about drunken nights, broken hearts and stints in jail, and included the Gold-certified hits “Love” (feat. Parker McCollum), “Something to Talk About” and the infamous “February 28, 2016.” Wetzel’s 2020 major label debut, Sellout, only furthered his legend with the Platinum-certified “Drunk Driving” plus the Gold-certified “Good Die Young” and “Kuntry & Wistern.” The 2022 follow-up, Hell Paso, hit No. 3 on Billboard’s Country Albums and spawned hits on both the country and rock charts, including the Gold-certified “Creeps” and “Cabo.” To date, Wetzel has 2.6 billion total streams and has created a genuine experience with his live concerts, which he describes as “total chaos.” In 2023 alone, he sold more than 275,000 tickets, and appeared for a third time on POLLSTAR’s Top Worldwide Tours. Wetzel will open for Morgan Wallen on the superstar’s One Night at a Time Stadium Tour this July and play prominent sets at festivals like Country Thunder and Watershed this summer, while also headlining his own Damn Near Normal World Tour. His new album, 9 Lives (Columbia), is set for release July 19.

About Jessie Murph
19-year-old powerhouse vocalist and songwriter Jessie Murph has been having an exciting 2024. Most recently she released her new single, “Cold,” to rave reviews and brought her sold-out global headline tour to North America after hitting major markets abroad and 40 cities across the U.S. & Canada. Earlier this year, Jessie, who was featured as MTV’s PUSH artist in January, showcased her soulful side with “Son of a Bitch.” The Billboard 21 Under 21 honoree’s latest single comes on the heels of her hit track, “Wild Ones,” with Jelly Roll, which has tallied over 200M streams worldwide since release in October, broke through top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Country Digital Song Sales chart. Jessie and Jelly Roll teamed up to perform the critically and commercially acclaimed track on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” and are nominated for Best Music Collaboration at the 2024 Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards.

2023 proved to be another standout year for Jessie who released her debut mixtape drowning in February to high praise. In May, she dropped “Cowboys and Angels,” which, along with her single “Texas (ft. Maren Morris),” ushered in a new era that etches raw emotion through her strikingly sincere songs laced with soul-gripping storytelling, hip hop-infused production and alternative experimentation anchored by her modest pop appeal. Named an ‘Artist to Watch’ by Genius, Pandora and Amazon Music, Jessie also collaborated with Diplo and Polo G on “Heartbroken,” which hit the Top 40 at pop radio in the U.S. Between praise from various outlets including SPIN, Rolling StoneFlaunt MagazineNYLON and amassing over 1 billion streams globally, Jessie is just getting started.

About NAILS:

For the first time in over 8 years, the blistering assault on our nervous system that can only be described as the sound of NAILS, has reemerged. With Carlos Cruz on drums, Andrew Solis on Bass, Shelby Lermo on Guitars, and Todd Jones on guitar & vocals, the upcoming studio album, EVERY BRIDGE BURNING, will be revealed August 30th, 2024 via Nuclear Blast Records.

The album artwork, a creation by Jef Whitehead, serves as a visual prelude to the auditory chaos—a stark representation of the aural brutality that NAILS delivers.

Recording for the album commenced in Massachusetts at God City Studio with Kurt Ballou (of CONVERGE), whose contribution is integral to the NAILS sound, as elucidated by Jones: “we’ve recorded every album with Kurt. He’s such an important ingredient as to how we present our music. When our fans want to hear NAILS, they want to hear something that is through the filter of Kurt’s engineering.”

EVERY BRIDGE BURNING was born out of unwavering dedication to NAILS fans and the underground music scene. It echoes their commitment to authenticity and raw power. NAILS remains a beacon of rebellion and resilience in a world hungry for genuine expression. With no shortage of effort or meticulous song arrangement, the time has arrived to become engulfed in the ferocity of NAILS once again as EVERY BRIDGE BURNING unveils a new, but familiar chapter in extreme music.

This band was modeled after some of my favorite bands; the type of bands where, when they put out an album, you know what it’s going to sound like,” describes Jones, “it’s the delivery of the expectation.” The sensory destroying musical onslaught that we’ve all been missing is back. NAILS is Todd Jones, Carlos Cruz, Andrew Solis, and Shelby Lermo.

Dive Into Black Lava's New Album A Few Days Early

Blackened, grooving heavy metal from members of Vipassi, Hadal Maw and Ne Obliviscaris

"A fantastic album...wrapped up in a package that is so tight, you couldn't squeeze in between the layers if you were as thin as paper." - Metal Temple

"Practically forces you to headbang" -
Metal Injection

"Familiar yet undeniably creative, heavy and a clear statement in the darkness of music" -
Metal Roos

Just two years removed from their smoldering debut, Black Lava are once again ready to erupt. The Savage Winds to Wisdom spills from the band's sacred cauldron of influences. Blackened countermelodies and hexing prog rhythms boil amidst old-school death metal. Only this time, these Australian sorcerers have added a heavy dose of atmosphere, conjuring medieval fantasies that are bound to whisk metalheads straight into the pit.

The Savage Winds to Wisdom comes out this Friday, July 12 on Season of Mist, but you can get blown away by all nine gale-force songs today by listening to the full album stream on Season of Mist's YouTube channel.

Though they formed during pandemic lockdown, Black Lava came together with the ease of a natural stream. When he's not touring with Ne Obliviscaris, Dan Presland also drums alongside Hadal Maw guitarist Ben Boyle in the labyrinthine all-instrumental band Vipassi. Those two have crossed paths with vocalist Rob Watkins around Melbourne's metal underground for the past decade. But the band took their time summoning The Savage Winds to Wisdom. It's not until opener "Colour of Death" has bubbled to a nice, sludgy head that Watkins unleashes the first of his many blood-soaked roars.

"There was greater care taken with the compositions", Boyle says. "There's more layering to the riffs and melodies. We called on a more broad list of inspirations and tones to give the album a greater sense of balance while keeping the same attention to detail. The Savage Winds to Wisdom is the kind of album that lends itself to repeat listens".

"Unsheathing Nightmares" lures you in before hooking its claws into your skull. The drums crash and rumble behind clouds of buzzing distortion, only for a riff to reign down with the crushing force of an executioner. You can practically hear Watkins' eyes rolling into the back of his head as he calls upon an ancient evil amidst hellish, rain-soaked ambience. "Speak to me, O silent one" .

"I try and stay true to the spirit of metal", Watkins says about crafting lyrics. "For 'Ironclad Sarcophagus', I pictured this ancient wizard sending out evil vibes into the world in hopes of tricking someone into opening his coffin". The video for the album's lead single also has more to it than meets the eye. What appears to be just another Satanic ritual turns on a knife's edge into something even more bloody and sinister.

The Savage Winds to Wisdom swirls with a deeper and darker sense of atmosphere, but the album still cuts all the way to the bone. The towering riff on "Dark Legacy" reigns down nothing but dread. "There's more depth to this album, but it still stays true to what we set out to do with Black Lava: create heavy, energetic and catchy tunes that make our listeners feel powerful".

Winding over the course of seven eventful minutes, the title track is big enough to stand as its own mythical kingdom. Stirred by a screeching solo from Ne Obliviscaris' Ben Baret, the song whirls into a torrential finale that makes The Savage Winds to Wisdom a perfect storm of blackened, groove-laden heavy metal.

"We sharpened our tools with this album”, Black Lava says. "The Savage Winds to Wisdom is a step up in all aspects. We went a little more dark and brutal and that's exactly where we want to take our music".

Like any good sorcerer, Black Lava cast a wicked array of spells. Dan Presland, Ben Boyle and Rob Watkins treated Outburn magazine to a list of the band's most potent influences and most punishing songs.

Not even the most stifling period in recent history could contain Black Lava. Despite being kept under strict lockdown during the pandemic, these Aussies were just stewing together, waiting to erupt. Now, only two years removed from their smoldering debut, the band are roaring back with even more mythical firepower on The Savage Winds to Wisdom.

“Our second album is a step up from the first in all aspects”, drummer Dan Presland says. “We took more time on the songwriting. The Savage Winds to Wisdom shows exactly where we want to take our music”.

Though possessed by an ancient and mysterious alchemy, Black Lava formed with the ease of a natural spring. Over the past decade, all four members have crossed paths around the various corners of Melbourne’s metal underground. On top of their progressive all-instrumental vision quests in Vipassi, Presland also drums alongside Hadal Maw guitarist Ben Boyle in the grinding, tech-death, underground curiosity A Million Dead Birds Laughing. But when the two got together to blow off steam amidst quarantine at Presland’s newly minted home studio, they were pleasantly surprised by the darkness that swept over these jam sessions.

“Both of us were dealing with a lot of pent-up frustrations”, Presland remembers. A few weeks before, his flight home from America (where he was supposed to track the drums for Ne Obliviscaris’ fourth album Exul) touched down hours before Australia closed its borders. “But that anger, coupled with our need to keep creating, led us in a different direction”.

Progressive metal was still a clear undercurrent, but the songs that came spewing out were unusually heavy. Death and black metal held more sway, though sludgy rock n’ roll also found its way into the mix. Such a peculiar range of influences required a vocalist with a very particular set of pipes. Fortunately, Rob Watkins jumped at the opportunity to reunite with Presland, who was the drummer in their thrash band Metalstorm. With Watkins’ Blackhelm bassist Tim Anderson added to the fold, Black Lava burst onto the scene in 2022 with their smoldering debut.

Soul Furnace more than lives up to those lofty expectations”, Distorted Sound hailed, “proving to not only be a late contender for album of the year, but also one of the more impressive debut albums of recent years”.

Black Lava wasted no time in keeping the juices flowing. The band was already hard at work on their second album while the first one was hot on the shelves. The Savage Winds to Wisdom stirs from the same cauldron of influences. Lead single “Ironclad Sarcophagus” echoes from the crypt with eerie countermelodies and a rhythm section that’s more bewitching than a spell book.

“I pictured this ancient wizard sending out evil vibes into the world in hopes of tricking someone into opening his coffin”, Watkins says. “When writing lyrics, I try and stay true to the spirit of metal. But really, I’m just channeling how the music makes me feel”.

If Soul Furnace was like stumbling upon the entrance to an ancient cave, then The Savage Winds to Wisdom is a fiery, full-blown descent into the belly of the beast. “Dark  Legacy” rings through the long black night with one sustained roar of a guitar roar, like an angry, one-eyed ogre. But while the songs came quickly, with Presland and Boyle carving out monstrous riffs and scaly grooves for Watkins to splatter his medieval fantasies, Black Lava took their time with this album. It's not until nearly three minutes into the opening number, after “Colour of Death” has boiled to a full headbang, that the first of its many horns-up roars is unleashed.

“There was greater care taken with compositions on The Savage Winds to Wisdom”, Boyle says. “There’s more depth and layering to the riffs and melodies. Calling on a more broad list of inspirations and tones, the album has a real sense of balance, a certain quality that will lend itself to repeat listens and attention to detail, while still staying true to what Black Lava set out to do; create heavy, yet energetic and catchy anthemic tunes that tell a story and emanate a sense of atmosphere and power for the listener.”

True to its name, The Savage Winds to Wisdom swirls within a deeper and darker sense of atmosphere. Whereas before their bang-bang approach to songwriting resembled something closer to a punk rock band, this time around, Black Lava concentrated more on atmosphere. “Unsheathing Nightmares” reveals its root source of terror in careful layers, mutating from raw black metal and razor-sharp tech-death into a rainy, ambient  hellscape. “That’s one of the songs that really excited me”, says Watkins, who calls upon a coven of witches by digging into the slimier depths of his baritone.

The title track is big enough to stand alone as its own self-contained world. Winding  over the course of seven eventful minutes, it’s the longest and perhaps most ambitious song in Black Lava’s musical geology. Blast beats pound like hail beneath waves of distortion that crash with the force of a monsoon. “The silents of fate” Watkins reckons, like a sea captain stranded among the wreckage.  “The thousand winds swirl the soul”. Swept up by a screeching solo from special guest Ben Baret (Ne Obliviscaris), the song whirls into an unstoppable force, a torrential finale that brings this album to a truly epic conclusion.

“We sharpened our tools with this album”, the band says. “We went a little more brutal and that sets the tone for where we’ll head in the future.

On The Savage Winds to Wisdom, Black Lava conduct a perfect storm.

KINGCROW Release Thrilling Second Single "Night Drive"

For the past two decades, Kingcrow have flown at the forefront of Italy's progressive metal scene. But on the band's new album, Hopium, they dive down a rabbit hole into a world where dreams are just illusions. Their new single, "Night Drive", drifts slowly before revving into madness.

Watch the video for "Night Drive", Below

Hopium is out August 23 on Season of Mist.

Pre-order & pre-save:
https://orcd.co/kingcrowhopium

From the clubs of Italy all the way to the global stage, Kingcrow have always soared above the fray. But "Night Drive" is rooted in escape. Like a cinematic thriller, the song's eerily hypnotic acoustics and sedate electronic pulse escalate into slithery grooves, slamming synths and a chaotic, headbanging guitar solo. It's the perfect soundtrack for a dark night of the soul.

The video for "Night Drive" was directed by Riccardo Nifosi and Devilnax. It stars the actress Federica Zongoli, alongside Kingcrow's vocalist Diego Marchesi.

The first incarnation of the band  was originally founded in Rome, Italy, by brothers Diego Cafolla (guitars) and Manuel Thundra Cafolla (drums) under the name of "Earth Shaker".

Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's poem "Raven" and driven by a will of change, the band's name was soon altered into KINGCROW and a couple of self-produced demos/albums where recorded under the KINGCROW moniker: Something Unknown(2001), Insider (2004) and Timetropia (2006).

In the early months of 2010 the band finished recording their new album “Phlegethon” that was released in June of the same year under the “Scarlet Records” label.

It was considered on an international level as a relevant masterpiece and was classed as one of the elite progressive metal albums of the year. It has been near the top of the “album of the year” charts in some international prog-rock websites. Phlegethon promotion lasted for about two years and a half.

During the same year, the band recorded the new album “In Crescendo” that was released in February 2013 by the American label “Sensory Records.

The band toured  along with Pain Of Salvation in North America  in April and May, 2013. In 2015 the band released the album “Eidos” and toured Europe as Headliners. Meanwhile KINGCROW signed a management deal with GlassVille Music, house of very well known progressive acts like Pain Of Salvation and Riverside among others.

The band recorded the new album titled “The Persistence”.

The album was released on September 7th via Sensory Records and received great reviews and ended on a lot of “best of 2018” lists on magazines and webzines.

The upcoming album “Hopium” marks another step forward in pushing boundaries remarking the restless progressive  attitude of the band in incorporating countless influences into a personal sound.

Describing the band today is quite a difficult task, but one could state that the influence of different kinds of music, from progressive rock , ambient music, alternative rock and metal are all present in the music of KINGCROW.

With each release KINGCROW has taken a step further away from their original roots and is regarded today as one of the most exciting bands that Italy has to offer.

WINTERSUN Reveal New Album Time II

12 years following WINTERSUN's TIME I, Finnish heavy metal quartet led by Jari Mäenpää announce their new album TIME II.  TIME II will be released on August 30th via Nuclear Blast Records.

Jari Mäenpää comments: "TIME II is an epic journey from light to darkness and back to light, exploring the universe and energy, contrasting dark stormy landscapes to calm and beautiful cherry blossom tree gardens with misty, snowy mountains that will leave you breathless. It has songs with furious speed of drums, guitars, and bass and beautiful melodic slower songs with a magical exotic influence. It has massive orchestrations and choirs spiced with ancient world instruments and glimmering synths. It has Jari's soaring, clean singing contrasted with his aggressive style. It is a highly detailed and complex album where you will find new things with every listen."

About WINTERSUN:

Finally, our patience will be rewarded when Finnish WINTERSUN’s Time II album is revealed to the world on August, 30th by Nuclear Blast. ‘It has been quite a journey’ admits mastermind Jari Mäenpää who has been working on his expansive Time project since early 2004.

Time II includes six epic tracks with individual stories. Yet the subjects are all linked and this red line gives it a conceptual feeling. Entering WINTERSUN’s universe, we are brought into the right mood with the eastern-influenced, atmospheric intro ‘Fields Of Snow’. The first real WINTERSUN track is the metallic brilliance of ‘The Way Of The Fire’, with fire representing the energy of stars as a source of life, which is also connected to time. In ‘One With The Shadows’ we experience the magic of an opulence of vocal harmonies, while orchestral arrangements loom up as ornamental moves. Jari has a remarkable vision on the lyrics, ‘Now I think it is about regret. You are living in the shadows as long as you don’t turn regret into something positive to continue your life. In ‘Ominous Clouds’, clouds are gathering as the interlude journeys towards the next exploring adventure ‘Storm’.

This is the heaviest and darkest track on the album,’ explains Jari. ‘It even has influences from classical music, more precisely from Vivaldi’s ‘Four Seasons’, furious guitars and heavy drums prevail, while the tone remains chaotic.’ The last track, ‘Silver Leaves’, with an array of harmonious sounds, is partly performed with traditional Chinese instruments like the ‘erhu’ (similar to the violin or fiddle). Ending on a positive note the song tells the story of finding a calm place and state of mind after the storm, being satisfied with your life, and enjoying nature around you, as reflected by the cherry tree garden on the cover. The artwork was created by Cameron Gray, while the booklet was designed by Hungarian artist Gyula Havancsák (lyrics, credits & thanks pages) and Onni Wiljami Kinnunen (band photos pages).

WINTERSUN is:

Jari Mäenpää | vocals, guitars, computer, programming
Teemu Mäntysaari | guitars
Jukka Koskinen | bass
Kai Hahto | drums

Electronic Group Deep AL Brindle Share Video for "Lost"

Los Angeles-based electronic group Deep AL Brindle — comprised of Diego Castellanos and Alastair Wilson — recently announced their debut album Are You Nervous? The record arrives on July 12 via Tooth & Nail Records. Pre-order it here.

The band's music is often a master class in smooth, chill vibes, and today, Deep AL Brindle have shared the video for "Lost." Watch it below

"It's about the complexities of being in a love relationship with someone, never knowing if you're right or wrong," the band says, offering a glimpse into the universally relatable topic.

Deep AL Brindle fashion vibrant and vital electronic soundscapes around a core of live instrumentation with a heartbeat maintained by real drums. After building a rabid hometown following, gaining traction on streaming platforms, and landing a deal with Tooth & Nail Records, the group's two distinct personalities and styles congregate in one ever-evolving vision on their full-length debut album, Are You Nervous? "We bring a counter balance to one another," Castellanos says. "We challenge each other's tendencies, which is cool. As a drummer, Alastair brings the life back into the songs, and his presence reassures me that, as the saying goes, 'Two minds are better than one.'"

"It's really been a journey," adds Wilson. "I'm glad we're on it together."

A few years back, the pair initially bonded as friends. Soon, this friendship manifested as a creative partnership where they spent countless hours jamming and making music together. During 2019, Deep AL Brindle formally came to life with the release of CTRL V, followed by a string of buzzing singles. Tooth & Nail took notice, and the pair inked a deal with the label. They continued to create at a prolific pace, decamping to Mexico City at the end of 2023 to lay the foundation for what would become Are You Nervous? On this trip, Alastair tracked the majority of his drums at an intimate studio as they absorbed the energy of their surroundings. "It was my first time going to Mexico City," he states. "I grew up skateboarding, and that culture is strong there. We were visiting skate shops, and the studio experience was amazing. The food was great too."

Along the way, they made a conscious decision to place Castellanos' vocals front-and-center on the LP. Encouraged by crowd reactions at shows, they chose to "spice it up a bit."

Deep AL Brindle are ultimately creating a place to escape to with the record and much more to come. “This is a prelude of what we’re going to be. It's just the beginning," says Wilson.

Joe Henry Presents Reissues Trilogy Of Three Acclaimed Albums

Joe Henry is one of the artists who have shaped the sound of modern American folk and blues music like hardly anyone else. Not only is Henry a GRAMMY Award-winning producer, but also a well-respected and prolific artist in his own right.

In 2024, Joe Henry is set to release three of his most acclaimed studio records for the first time on vinyl via earMUSIC, featuring a special selection of unheard bonus tracks as well as intimate demos and live recordings from his personal archives.

"With this new reissue series, I find there's something unexpectedly compelling to me about revisiting this particular trio of albums as, together, these volumes represent my sort of 'coming-of-age' as a record maker, in that I stopped observing any border between a song's composition and its studio articulation. It all became a single impulse for me...conjured into fruition right there in my basement," Henry reflects on the reissue series.

Civilians, the first of the three, invites the listener on a journey into Henry's poetic lyricism. While writing the album, Henry found himself going back to an old-fashioned approach of songwriting, starting most songs on acoustic guitar and adding significant production only later on during the process. Recorded in Henry's studio in Pasadena, long time collaborators like Loudon Wainwright III, Bill Frisell, Greg Leisz, and Van Dyke Parks have influenced the sound of the album alongside Henry.

Blood From Stars, Henry's 2009 record, sees him exploring the realms of orchestral blues and jazz. During the time, Henry was listening to a lot of country-blues and revisiting poems by writers like e.e. cummings — two forms of art that he says strongly influenced the sound of the record. With his evocative lyrics and soulful vocal delivery, Henry crafts a poignant narrative on what he calls one of his personal favorites amongst his own records.

Rounding out the trilogy is Invisible Hour, one of Henry's more recent works. Recorded in 2013, it features several of his closest musical companions, including Lisa Hannigan and best-selling novelist Colum McCann. Henry describes the songs on the album as "songs pertaining in some ways to the subject of marriage — marriage as a verb, not a noun." The album tells a captivating story about resilience and the redemptive power of love.

All three albums will be pressed on 180g double-vinyl and additionally be made available as CD Digipak, for streaming and digital download via earMUSIC, with the official pre-order starting today.
