Whiskey Myers Celebrate Year Two of Firewater Music Festival; Named Texas Roadhouse's October Featured Artist

With POLLSTAR proclaiming in their recent cover story that “somewhere between the six-string swagger of Southern rock and the hard-charging improv-aspect of jam bands, Whiskey Myers ignited a national fervor,” the cover stars brought together fans and musical friends for a 150 acre celebration outside Kansas City this weekend for their second annual Firewater Music Festival.

Kicking off Thursday evening with a pre-party concert for early access camping attendees, Clay Clear Band, Eli Howard & The Greater Good, Matt Poss Band and Steven Bankey & The Flatlanders (who also returned late Saturday night for an after party performance) set the stage for a weekend of intimate performances by a who’s who of artists straddling the lines of Country, Rock and Americana.

As the weekend continued, Old 97s, Nikki Lane, 49 Winchester, Austin Meade and Them Dirty Roses launched the main event with thrilling Friday performances on the Main Stage that culminated with a captivating headlining set from Blackberry Smoke. The Friday night party continued with a late-night forest jam at the Campground Stage hosted by 49 Winchester with Whiskey Myers percussionist Tony Kent joining for a few songs, offering a unique opportunity for fans to see their favorite artists up close in a jam session environment.

Saturday’s musical offerings kept the party going with performances by Quaker City Night Hawks, Goodbye June, Matt Koziol and The Weathered Souls, plus Read Southall Band as the final guest stars of the lineup. A highlight of the day came midway through Goodbye June’s set, as lead guitarist Tyler Baker lost his footing during an all-out jam, landing on his back and continuing to play from the ground without missing a beat.

As the night came to a climax, Whiskey Myers themselves took the stage to close out the Main Stage for the weekend. Performing everything from RIAA Platinum-certified hits “Stone,” “Ballad of a Southern Man” and “Broken Window Serenade” to fan-favorite cuts “Frogman,” “Virginia,” “Bury My Bones” and more, the set culminated in an all-sing finale featuring members of Read Southall Band, Goodbye June and The Weathered Souls joining for a cover of Tom Petty’s “Refugee” to bring an energetic close to Firewater Music Festival.

With Whiskey Myers having also performed a healthy offering of music off Tornillo, their latest critically acclaimed album that was released in July, the band celebrated by Rolling Stone as “the new torch bearers for Southern music” and by Esquire as “the real damn deal” thrilled the Firewater crowd just as they have at sold-out shows across the country on their Tornillo Tour, underway now.

In addition to upcoming tour dates, Whiskey Myers will also be featured as Texas Roadhouse’s featured artist for the month of October, with the beloved restaurant prominently featuring the band’s music via in-store jukeboxes and by playing their John Wayne” music video frequently across all 600+ locations nationwide.

Whiskey Myers' TORNILLO Available Everywhere Now

Just a month removed from a pre-show surprise at their sold-out Red Rocks debut celebrating four new RIAA Gold and Platinum certifications, Whiskey Myers have unveiled the latest edition of what Esquirecelebrates as “straight-up, booze-swilling, highway-driving, heart-on-your-sleeve, blood-on-your-knuckles country music” with new album Tornillo, available everywhere now via the band’s own Wiggy Thump Records with distribution by Thirty Tigers. Listen HERE.

After spending 21 days isolated at the 2,300-acre Sonic Ranch studio deep in the heart of their native Texas, just miles from the U.S./Mexico border, the genre-bending band has doubled down on what they do best: sharing honest truths with no-holds-barred instrumentation, letting the self-produced music speak for itself. With today’s release of the 12-song album named for the border town that is home to the pecan orchard-filled recording complex, the six-piece has taken their solid decade-plus foundation and pushed themself to further explore new sonic landscapes.

Tornillo as a whole does exactly that, drawing as much inspiration from Nirvana as from John Prine – even adding the legendary McCrary Sisters’ gospel influence to the project on background vocals. With vocalist Cody Cannon leading the way on songwriting, the album also features writes from guitarist John Jeffers and fellow bandmembers Jamey Gleaves and Tony Kent, as well as rising singer/songwriter Aaron Raitiere (Anderson East, Oak Ridge Boys, A Star is Born). As American Songwriter declares, the band is “in a league of their own with their signature hard-rocking sound on full display… Saddle up and settle in because Whiskey Myers is ready to take listeners on a country, rock, and blues-infused wild ride.”

“Southern rock is alive and well on Whiskey Myers’ Tornillo – and it comes with a brassy border-town swagger,” adds Nashville Lifestyles in the July print issue on stands now. “Equal parts train songs, tenacious energy, and Tabasco… their lawless musicality burns like the sun.”

With the instrumental title track opener setting the horns-infused scene for the energy to follow, lead single and recent Texas regional radio chart-topper “John Wayne” follows as the first full song on the album as Cannon’s split-rail witness of life and survival emerges throughout the manifesto of music’s power to save. The surge and swagger, harmonica wails and wah-wah guitar solos suggest the momentum of outliers making a run for it, but a closer listen shows a band landing firmly in its own definitive space – never eschewing their roots; building on the influences a bunch of boys from Palestine, Texas twisted into an electric guitar-heavy sonic temple that reached across Skynyrd, The Stones circa “Heartbreaker,” Little Feat, J.J. Cale, Led Zeppelin, Waylon Jennings, The Black Crowes and ‘80s era Hank Jr.

Those guitars define the fury and the burn that gives Whiskey Myers its edge. From the hard-hitting take on spousal battery and retribution “Antioch” (celebrated by Billboard for its “gritty vocal that’s equal parts bite and vigor”) to the “Call Me The Breeze” evoking boogie of “Feet’s,” Tornillo starts hot, slinging truths about a world that goes down hard and is survived by those who can dig in and bring it every day – invoking Levon Helm, singing of Fallujah nights, embracing the Book of Revelation and seeking higher ground for working people through their churning guitars as much as the turning of the wheels that have carried them to over 2,500 live dates, making them one of the hardest touring bands in the world.

Live is how the only band to perform as part of the “Yellowstone” storyline connects, already selling over 250,000 tickets this year with sold out shows from coast to coast. Speaking truth to power, smoking that smoke, turning the intensity up and wiping away the blather of the media, they rage against the machine but also invoke vulnerability and a desire to outrun the dysfunction of our world. Whether it’s the larger priorities in a relationship coming apart slow jam “For The Kids,” the reckoning with mistakes and seeking grace on the haunted closer “Heart of Stone” or the passing knowledge earned and lessons learned on to one’s children “Other Side,” there’s wisdom and a desire for a better life.

“I’m not speaking for anybody, and I have no end goal,” reflects Cannon. “I’m just a musician, not someone qualified to tell anyone. But people do gravitate to songs they can connect to. Is it the melody? The lyric? Maybe it’s all of it. I just know you get older; you take things more seriously… Sometimes someone’ll tell me, ‘This song saved my life.’ The idea my song moved them so much it changed their life, you’re gonna go out and do the best you can because of that. There’s a lot of weight on your shoulders. But how can you complain about that?”

That weight is something Jeffers’ bucolic, almost lullaby “Heavy On Me” tackles directly. Confessional, he measures his life and family, plus his willingness to support everything that comes with it. It’s a song that’s as much divine surrender as facing what lies ahead. Jeffers also contributes the book-ending witness “Whole World Gone Crazy,” measuring the state of the union over a lean beat and guitar blurts that melt into a full-on band chorus.

“With this authoritative and impressive album, Whiskey Myers once again succeed in [pushing] limited borders wider with creativity and faith in their own substantial talents,” asserts Holler of the band’s ability to stretch the confines of traditional Southern rock. “With Tornillo, their recent burst of crossover popularity should be set to last.”

As that genre-crossing prowess proves, what Classic Rock declares of Whiskey Myers has never been truer: “Authenticity: you can’t buy it, you can’t bluff it. And you can’t beat it when it comes to delivering dirty, down-home, electric guitar music from the American South.”

Fans can see the new music and more live as the Tornillo Tour continues through the summer with numerous already-sold-out stops. Whiskey Myers will also host the return of their personally curated Firewater Music Festival Sept. 29 – Oct. 1 outside Kansas City.

About Whiskey Myers
Genre-bending band Whiskey Myers have played more than 2,500 live shows to ever-increasing crowd sizes since their emergence in 2007. In addition to headlining their own sold-out shows from coast to coast and performing at marquee festivals Bonnaroo, Stagecoach, Download and more, the six-piece was also personally selected to open The Rolling Stones’ Chicago stadium show in 2019. Their forthcoming self-produced album, Tornillo, set for release July 29, follows their fifth studio album, Whiskey Myers, out now on the band’s own Wiggy Thump Records, which debuted at No. 1 on both the Country and Americana/Folk sales charts, at No. 2 on the Rock chart and No. 6 on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart (No. 3 among new releases). In total, Whiskey Myers have sold more than 1.3 million albums and amassed over 1.8 billion streams while earning four RIAA Gold & Platinum certifications. The band known for their high-energy live show and unique sound has also earned sync success with features (and an on-screen appearance) in Paramount Network’s hit show “Yellowstone” as well as the Renée Zellweger-led Netflix series “What/If,” the Angelina Jolie film “Those Who Wish Me Dead” and hit CBS series “SEAL Team.” USA Today describes their sound as “a riff-heavy blend of Southern rock and gritty country that has earned comparisons to the Allman Brothers Band and Led Zeppelin,” with Rolling Stone noting “it’s the seminal combination of twang and crunchy rock & roll guitars that hits a perfect sweet spot.”

Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival Debut Set for Next Friday, June 17 as the Tornillo Tour Continues Selling Out Venues 10,000 Strong

Riding high from the news earlier this week that four of their songs have earned new RIAA Gold and Platinum certifications, genre-bending band Whiskey Myers continues to share new music with today’s release of “The Wolf” off their forthcoming album Tornillo, set for release July 29 via the band’s own Wiggy Thump Records with distribution by Thirty Tigers. Pre-order / pre-save the album HERE.

The song is the latest in a string of recent releases previewing the album, including lead single “John Wayne,”currently climbing the Top 5 on the Texas Regional Radio Report chart, and is emblematic of the sound Esquirecelebrates as “straight-up, booze-swilling, highway-driving, heart-on-your-sleeve, blood-on-your-knuckles country music.” Written solo by lead singer Cody Cannon, the lyrics are a battle cry from the independent band achieving massive mainstream success:

I’ve done rattled through a tempest, I’ve done rocked through the storm
These scars that I bear are hard earned and battle worn
They’re from crawling and scratching the whole damn way
Everything that you see is uncut and self-made

So who in the hell you think you're playing with now?
You done fucked around and let the wolf out
And I’ll be prowling while you sleep
You're playing for fun, I’m playing to eat

The five-and-a-half-minute rocker is driven by Tornillo’s signature horns section and a blazing guitar riff, with American Songwriter recently proclaiming, “Whiskey Myers [is] in a league of their own with their signature hard-rocking sound on full display… Saddle up and settle in because Whiskey Myers is ready to take listeners on a country, rock, and blues-infused wild ride.”

Fans also got a sneak peek at the new song during the band’s sold-out Red Rocks debut earlier this week, where the six-piece thrilled the nearly 10,000 fans in attendance with two-plus hours of nonstop music and proved what Classic Rock Magazine declares of Whiskey Myers: “Authenticity: you can’t buy it, you can’t bluff it. And you can’t beat it when it comes to delivering dirty, down-home, electric guitar music from the American south.”

The Tornillo Tour continues through the summer with numerous already-sold-out stops, plus Whiskey Myers will make their debut at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival next Friday, June 17, and will host the return of their personally curated Firewater Music Festival Sept. 29 – Oct. 1 outside Kansas City.

TORNILLO, Texas – With anticipation growing around their sixth studio album Tornillo, set for release July 29 via the band’s own Wiggy Thump Records with distribution by Thirty Tigers, genre-bending band Whiskey Myers continue to build upon the growing success of consistently sold-out shows, including their upcoming sold-out Red Rocks Amphitheatre debut, adding over 15 additional dates to the Tornillo Tour this fall.

Tickets for the new dates are on sale to the general public Friday, May 6 at 10 a.m. local time via WhiskeyMyers.com, with presale access available for members of the “Official Whiskey Myers Fans” Facebook page beginning Tuesday, May 3 at 12 p.m. local time. Additionally, Spotify will give the band’s biggest fans on the platform early access beginning Thursday, May 5 at 10 a.m. local time.

Last week, Whiskey Myers offered a further glimpse at full-length Tornillo with the release of “Whole World Gone Crazy,” with American Songwriter declaring in an exclusive premiere, “the bluesy-southern rock blending tune places Whiskey Myers in a league of their own with their signature hard-rocking sound on full display… Saddle up and settle in because Whiskey Myers is ready to take listeners on a country, rock, and blues-infused wild ride.”

“I wrote ‘Whole World Gone Crazy’ back in April of 2020. There was so much hysteria going on in the world before and around that time that this song just sort of came out of me,” lead guitarist John Jeffers shared with the outlet. “Between COVID and everything else, everyone seemed to be going a little nuts. I felt like during all of that, most people were, and still are, just normal people trying to make it another day. Trying to keep their job, praying to the big guy upstairs and working on getting through some crazy times.”

Written solo by Jeffers, who also sings lead vocals on the track, the song’s timely lyrics and sauntering rhythm build over three minutes into a blazing instrumental breakdown showcasing the band’s signature style, described by Esquire as “straight-up, booze-swilling, highway-driving, heart-on-your-sleeve, blood-on-your-knuckles country music.”

“Whole World Gone Crazy” follows prior Tornillo early releases “Antioch” and lead single “John Wayne,” both of which earned praise as part of Billboard’s “First Country” celebrating the best new songs each week, with the outlet celebrating the former as “a biting track” with “horns, grinding guitars and a solid background vocal chorus” and “meaty Southern rock and blues” and the latter as “nearly five minutes of righteous southern rock, which arrives via a swampy mesh of soul and funk,” continuing, “Cody Cannon’s raspy growl leads a flurry of sizzling guitar, thumping bass, swirling harmonica and flashes of horns, as this group continues pushing its boundaries.”

Tornillo offers the next chapter for the six-piece band that Cowboys & Indians declares is “on a course toward massive success” with Rolling Stone praising Whiskey Myers’ signature ability to “successfully blend hard rock and country twang” in a way that makes them “just as compelling, hard-rocking, and genre-crossing on record as they are onstage” as Billboard proclaims that the new music “is a worthy addition to the group’s already electrifying, rowdy live shows.”

Among the new dates on the fall leg, Whiskey Myers recently announced that their personally curated Firewater Music Festival will return for a second year, taking place Sept. 29 – Oct. 1, 2022, just outside Kansas City. 42-Date Tornillo Tour Including Sold-Out Red Rocks Debut Launches April 23
Ahead of Band’s Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival Debut This Summer

As anticipation grows around Whiskey Myers’ just-announced sixth studio album Tornillo, set for release July 29 via the band’s own Wiggy Thump Records with distribution by Thirty Tigers, the group celebrated by Esquire for their “straight-up, booze-swilling, highway-driving, heart-on-your-sleeve, blood-on-your-knuckles country music” is back with even more new music upon today’s release of “Antioch.”

Carrying forward the horns and gospel-tinged background vocals first introduced with lead single “John Wayne,” which prompted MusicRow to proclaim, “The six-piece band has taken their over a decade in-the-making foundation and pushed themself to explore new sonic landscapes,” “Antioch” offers yet another peek at the music to come on this summer’s full-length project.

Written solo by lead singer Cody Cannon, the heavy lyrics paired with a pulsing rhythm and fuzzed-out vocals on the four-minute rocker chronicle a young man’s journey through life anchored by growing up in an abusive home; from joining the military to getting in trouble with the law, all as he reckons with his violent paternal heritage:

I hate him so much even though I bear his name
I can’t take him right now but one day that’s gonna change
When I get grown
’Cause Mama don’t cry when Daddy’s gone

Tornillo offers the next chapter for the six-piece band that Cowboys & Indians declares is “on a course toward massive success” with Rolling Stone praising Whiskey Myers’ signature ability to “successfully blend hard rock and country twang” in a way that makes them “just as compelling, hard-rocking, and genre-crossing on record as they are onstage.”

That onstage presence will be on full display as the Tornillo Tour launches next month, running through the summer with numerous already-sold-out stops, including the band’s debut at the famed Red Rocks Amphitheater, which sold out within a day of going on sale to the public. Whiskey Myers will also make their debut at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival this summer before hosting the return of their personally curated Firewater Music Festival, taking place Sept. 29 – Oct. 1 just outside Kansas City.

41-Date Tornillo Tour Launches April 23 Ahead of Band’s Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival Debut This Summer

For genre-bending band Whiskey Myers, 2019’s self-titled and self-produced album offered a watershed moment. With Rolling Stone raving that the “irresistible” album was “the record the band was poised to make” while declaring them “the new torch bearers for Southern music” in a story titled “How Whiskey Myers Won Over Mick Jagger and Made the Album of Their Career;” Billboard and No Depression naming the album to best-of-the-year lists; 41,000 first week album sales; and the project debuting atop both the Country and Americana album charts (as well as at No. 2 on the Rock charts, behind only a re-release of The Beatles’ Abbey Road), the band celebrated mainstream success a decade in the making.

Now, after spending 21 days isolated at the 2,300-acre Sonic Ranch studio deep in the heart of their native Texas, just miles from the U.S./Mexico border, the Gold-certified renegades have doubled down on what they do best: sharing honest truths with no-holds-barred instrumentation, letting the self-produced music speak for itself. Yet with Tornillo, named for the border town that is home to the pecan orchard-filled recording complex and set for release on July 29 via their own Wiggy Thump Records with distribution by Thirty Tigers, the six-piece band has taken their solid decade-plus foundation and pushed themself to further explore new sonic landscapes.

“It’s going to have a little bit different sound,” lead singer Cody Cannon shared recently with Outsider. “It’s still Whiskey Myers at its core, but it’s kind of fresh… We did a lot of bass and horns on this one, which is something we’ve always wanted to do. Just being fans of all that old music and Motown stuff, and a lot of the stuff coming out of Muscle Shoals, old rock and roll.

“We’re going to bend [genre] even more, I think, with this new record,” he continued. “It’s all over the place. But that’s fun, right? I hate the whole ‘Put it in a box. You gotta be this.’ … That’s not art to me. I love the idea of just doing, really, whatever you feel. It comes out a certain way because that’s just how it comes out. Whiskey Myers never really tried to be a certain way. It’s just how we are. So I think that’s really the whole thing about music, or the beauty about music; it’s just that freedom to create.”

Tornillo as a whole does exactly that, drawing as much inspiration from Nirvana as from Waylon Jennings – even adding the legendary McCrary Sisters’ gospel influence to the project on background vocals. With Cannon leading the way on songwriting, the album also features writes from lead guitarist John Jeffers and fellow bandmembers Jamey Gleaves and Tony Kent, as well as rising singer/songwriter Aaron Raitiere (Anderson East, Oak Ridge Boys, A Star is Born).

The first taste of that new music comes today via lead single “John Wayne” and album intro “Tornillo,” both available everywhere now with the album itself available for pre-order and pre-save HERE.

Fans also have the chance to hear the new music live with today’s announcement of the 41-date Tornillo Tour, launching in April and running through August. The tour builds upon the growing success of the road warriors’ consistently sold-out shows, offering capacities upwards of 5,000 – 10,000 fans in cities including Indianapolis, Oklahoma City and more, plus the band’s debut at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival this fall.
