Southern rocker JC Miller shares 'Asphalt Confidential' single, a quest for uncharted territory

LA-based artist JC Miller kicks off November in fine style with 'Asphalt Confidential', a sonic odyssey of self-discovery, where the open road becomes a canvas for the spirit's exploration. This new single reflects the protagonist's timeless quest for meaning, fuelled by the thrill of the unknown.

A seasoned songwriter who has crafted music for renowned brands like Levi's, Coca-Cola and Nike, JC Miller now finds himself turning his focus towards his own artistic vision, creating music that resonates with his soul.

As with his previous output, 'Asphalt Confidential' is a collaborative effort involving famed producer Marty Rifkin, perhaps best known for his work with Tom Petty, Glen Campbell and Jewel, in addition to playing pedal steel guitar in Bruce Springsteen's The Sessions Band.

"Straight up, 'Asphalt Confidential' is about the freedom of the road. The unknown territory is on the map but also inside all of us. It’s a symbolic adventure and deep dive. For me, it’s a recurring theme – to break away from the mundane chains of everyday life and hit the road to seek out the unseen. It’s a lifelong hunt I have been on, traveling on the asphalt all through the Southwest, tracking old histories and new mysteries. I’m always seeking answers, staying in motion," says JC Miller.

"I love Rockabilly guitar and especially the country-fried version. This song is my homage to that rollicking, rumbling sound. What gets me about Rockabilly is its direct connection to the earliest Rock n’ Roll -- that prototypical sound of the first electric guitars ringing through the TVs and radios in the early 1950s. It’s so classic yet still fresh. I dig a lot of the music that came after, but somehow those first pioneers armed with electric guitars blazed a trail that we all still revisit."

Miller is on quite a roll in terms of producing a steady stream of impressive tracks. Earlier this month, he released 'The Back of The Beyond', a song about getting lost and about being in the middle of nowhere, following September's 'Blackberry Canes' and August's 'Tombstone Junction'. The summer also brought the singles 'Dead Horse Ranch', 'Sundown Slim','Wayward Son' and 'Before Nightfall'.

A singer-songwriter and guitarist, Miller's brand of music is unique, memorable and informed by his own experiences, blending Americana, Blues, Country and Southern Rock. He knows his craft well and understands how the instruments used can shape a song's particular energy and sound.

JC Miller shares"On this track, I am playing a 1957 Gretsch 6120, the quintessential Stray Cats - cowboy-axe in a color that Gretsch called Western orange. It’s also a nod to the Traveling Wilburys -- George Harrison, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, and Jeff Lynne --- they decided to be an all-Gretsch band in 1988! Essentially, along those same lines, I will continue plumbing the past to define the future, history honored and lessons learned".

As of November 1, 'Asphalt Confidential' is out everywhere via Tilt Records, including Spotify and Apple Music, where his other impressive collection of singles is also available for download.

American singer-songwriter JC Miller presents his new single 'Blackberry Canes', released via Tilt Records. Once again, this true-grit storyteller engages us in a captivating journey that blends time and nature within the American landscape.

From the opening dobro lick leading into a catchy baritone guitar entrance and the soulful Telecaster twang that follows, you know you are in JC Miller country. Classic on arrival you will be singing along with this infectious tune. In true JC fashion, this song's outro is a celebratory groove with all the twirling southern fried rock guitar mojo we have come to expect from JC Miller.

"The song 'Blackberry Canes' came about from thinking about the rambling, ramshackle path of growth sometimes. It’s not always a pretty pattern but it gets the job done, always reaching and somehow surviving… Blackberry trunks go sideways and every which way and travel a roundabout trail, never a straight line. It is a small passing thought really but it serves to remind us that you have to keep moving forward no matter what into the unknown just to grab the next beam of light," says JC Miller.

"Like the lyric says, I feel ”Suspended in our time, Somewhere in between, Untold tomorrows and Countless yesterdays…” We are stuck between the past and the future, and that giant size idea can be expressed with the smallest details found in wild nature, or right in your front yard. I also think, like it says in the song, “It’s a punishment and crime how we’re slaves to the machine…” I am a throwback to the 20th Century analog era and old school all the way. I’m a throwback luddite type of guy".

JC Miller's music takes form through the music alchemy enjoyed with celebrated musician-producer Marty Rifkin, who is known for his work with Tom Petty, Glen Campbell and Jewel, in addition to playing pedal steel guitar in Bruce Springsteen's The Sessions Band.

With country balladry, this latest offering follows a hearty string of singles that include 'Tombstone Junction', 'Dead Horse Ranch', 'Sundown Slim','Wayward Son' and 'Before Nightfall'.

A Los Angeles-based artist hailing from Detroit, JC Miller has spent years creating music for major clients, which include the likes of Levi's, Coca-Cola and Nike. Now he is also pursuing his own authentic path as a singer-songwriter and guitarist with a distinctive sound invoking elements of Americana, Country and Southern Rock. Inspired by his personal journeys, Miller crafts relatable songs that are rooted in the fabric of America, his work infused in deep affection for its Southern realms.

With clever hooks, natural charm, and a talent for songsmithing, Miller's songs resonate with audiences at a deeper level. With passion and conviction, his lyrics are both relatable and thought-provoking, painting vivid pictures of life's joys and challenges - stories of America, both past and present.

JC Miller's 'Blackberry Canes' is out everywhere, including Spotify and Apple Music. The previous single 'Tombstone Junction' is also available everywhere, along with his recent run of stunning singles.

Seasoned country-rock artist JC Miller presents his new single 'Tombstone Junction', following the path of a true-grit American songwriter. Released via American indie imprint Tilt Records, JC Miller once again takes us on a captivating journey across the American landscape.

In a world that's constantly moving forward, leaving behind a trail of fading memories, Miller's new piece delves into the profound sense of loss that accompanies the erosion of the past. 'Tombstone Junction' is a poignant exploration of the yearning for connection to our roots and the wisdom that can be gleaned from the echoes of our ancestors.

"Tombstone Junction is a kind of stand-in metaphor for the tremendous sense of loss we feel when we are disconnected from the past. When that continuity breaks, as it is pretty much nowadays, we lose our way. The future’s not here yet, what’s there to say about that? The past has so many answers to recurring questions and there are so many different threads to trace down and revisit. We can learn so much from that which came before. That repeating sense of yearning for something that no longer exists is something I feel mostly all the time - memories from childhood, favorite places, road trips," says JC Miller.

"I love smaller intimate moments and places, more than the famous or grandiose ones. Tombstone Junction was a theme park that burned down twice and was mismanaged, but it was also a place where Dolly Parton, Randy Travis, Conway Twitty, Loretta Lynn, and a ton of others played live concerts. That venue is gone but echoes of the music and the ghostly memories of the concert goers remain. Those performances were shared experiences with these masters of a craft I admire, study, and look to".

Back with his unique blend of southern rock, second-line funk, woodsy blues and outlaw country balladry, this latest offering follows a hearty string of singles that include 'Dead Horse Ranch', 'Sundown Slim','Wayward Son' and 'Before Nightfall'.

Now based in Los Angeles, this prolific Detroit-born guitarist and songwriter weaves stories through the prism of sonic archaeology, unearthing the spirit of Americana and giving it voice through resonant melodies and via geographic landmarks discovered on his own personal journeys. Miller crafts relatable songs that are rooted in the fabric of America, his work infused in deep affection for its Southern realms.

Evoking a grounded sense of place through his music, Miller's sound has a Southern-fried edge and a transportive authenticity. He makes songs that feel at home in neon-lit diners, long highway drives, desert expanses, and sun-soaked small towns. Miller pays homage to his guitar and songwriting heroes, inspired by timeless artists like Neil Young, Leon Russell and The Band as much as the unfussy yet potent prose of writers like Larry McMurtry, Ernest Hemingway and Cormac McCarthy.

Music is a labor of love for JC Miller, having spent years as a sideman and composing for corporate titans like Levi's, Coca-Cola and Nike. Now he's ditched the boardroom for the pleasure of creating his own music.

Imbued with an intentional sense of timelessness, JC Miller crafts anthems that resonate with the soul of America, inspired by the gradual rediscovery of history - of his own family’ and America at large. Tastefully blending classic Americana and rock echoes from history, woven through his masterful guitar work, each song is like a map, charting the path to self-discovery.

As of August 30, 'Tombstone Junction' is available everywhere online, including SpotifyApple Music and elsewhere, where his latest series of stunning singles may also be found.

Seasoned country-rock artist JC Miller presents his new single 'Dead Horse Ranch', released with American indie imprint Tilt Records. A captivating tale, Miller takes us to an actual little-known point on the American map in Arizona - a place impressive enough to inspire this powerful new song.

This worthwhile journey follows those pursued on his latest singles'Wayward Son' and 'Before Nightfall'.As ever, his music is intricately related to the American landscape, both geographically and socially, as reflected in his lyrics "Fall in Walnut Canyon / A forever formation / Something bigger than you / The force of nature breaks through / We’re all a small part of this place".

A Southern California-basedDetroit-born guitarist and songwriter, JC Miller weaves stories through the prism of sonic archaeology, unearthing the spirit of Americana and giving it voice through resonant melodies and via geographic landmarks discovered on his own personal journeys.

A prolific artist, JC Miller's output is a product of his partnership and friendship with iconic musician-producer Marty Rifkin, known for his work with Tom Petty, Glen Campbell and Jewel, and also as a member of Bruce Springsteen's The Sessions Band on pedal steel guitar.

Offering a breath of fresh air amidst the overproduced world of country music, Miller crafts relatable songs brimming with infectious melodies and down-to-earth charm. His songs are rooted in the fabric of America, showcasing a true master, whose work is infused in deep affection for its Southern realms.

"I like to write about mountains and trees and places, and people you meet on the road… the musings of a nomadic life of a traveling musician -- a recording of things that becomes a kind of Atlas Obscura – the small stories, the real people, the defunct places ... Dead Horse Ranch is a place in Arizona that really sets the tone, an unlikely name for a sublime spot on earth … I am a Sun Belt lifer … Arizona, New Mexico, California, Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, Florida," says JC Miller.

"It is a search for authenticity and at the same time a journey of self-discovery. My father’s family is from all of these places, but mainly situated in the Bogalusa, Baton Rouge area in LA … I also love the desert and am especially inspired by the high desert."

Evoking a grounded sense of place through his music, Miller's sound has a Southern-fried edge and a transportive authenticity. He makes songs that feel at home in neon-lit diners, long highway drives, desert expanses, and sun-soaked small towns.

Creating music for wanderers, Miller pays homage to his guitar and songwriting heroes, inspired by timeless artists like Neil Young, Leon Russell and The Band as much as the unfussy yet potent prose of writers like Larry McMurtry, Ernest Hemingway and Cormac McCarthy.

“I’m not trying to hide my sources. I’m trying to add footnotes, carry on the southern and western, southwestern frame of mind. I feel like I am representing another generation of storytellers. I’m trying to paint a picture through music, where the lens is focused on the deeply personal, but it can also be universal," says JC Miller.

JC Miller presents new single 'Wayward Son' on the passing of time and the inexorable current of life

"It isn’t just Americana; his songs feel like small vignettes in the everyday lives of ordinary people scraping a hard-fought living out of America’s West. 'Before Nightfall' isn’t just about a place but it is also a point in history which his music directs us, and as the modern world fades out" ~ Big Takeover Magazine

Americana / southern rock stalwart JC Miller presents his new single 'Wayward Son' about the march of time. This catchy slice of relatable southern rock, released via American indie imprint Tilt Records.

Channelled through Americana-tinged rock, 'Wayward Son' is ultimately a lament for lost time and the relentless hand of fate. Struck by a case of the proverbial existential blues, JC Miller brings the story of the Wayward Son to song, following up his recently-released single 'Before Nightfall'.

A Southern California-based Detroit-born guitarist and songwriter, JC Miller's songwriting efforts are comparable to storytelling through sonic archaeology, unearthing the spirit of Americana and giving it voice through addictive melodies.

Evoking a grounded sense of place through his music, Miller's sound has a Southern-fried edge and a transportive authenticity. He makes songs that feel at home in neon-lit diners, long highway drives, desert expanses, and sun-soaked small towns.

A prolific artist, his output is a product of his partnership and friendship with iconic musician-producer Marty Rifkin, known for his work with Tom Petty, Glen Campbell and Jewel, and also as a member of Bruce Springsteen's The Sessions Band on pedal steel guitar.

"'Wayward Son' was brought on by the feeling of being uprooted and overtaken by events and time… “In the fast lane comes change, still going but slowing to a crawl”… the opening lines say it all … My “truck-flattened history” … I’m “Longing for something I can’t quite name”… reaching, groping, yearning," explains JC Miller.

"I read a lot of Larry McMurtry and I love the character development and the fact that he achieves a majesty -- not through aggrandizing things but quite the opposite – questioning the essence of the lost rancho days, the wildcat era, the blasting juke boxes, the rough side of roadside taverns … the world on the road… The end of an era does not invalidate it … by being honest in his appraisals McMurtry prompts us to admire these flawed heroes even more IMO…

Americana-Southern Rocker JC Miller shares hearty new single 'Before Nightfall'

"Candid and catchy, this riveting and memorable music takes us to another time and place. With its frank lyrics, infectious melody, and pure Southern rock grit, this is a must-listen, packing an emotional punch and showcasing impressive musical talent... has many of the elements that allowed such artists as Wilco and Ryan Adams to transcend legendary status in the underground music community" ~ Amplify Music Magazine

Americana / southern rock stalwart JC Miller presents his new single 'Before Nightfall', released via American indie imprint Tilt Records. The Detroit-born guitarist and songwriter, now based in Southern California, has always been a searcher, long driven and inspired by vintage Americana. On this new offering, he explores the atmosphere and mood of history in a tremendously catchy track.

Evoking a grounded sense of place through his music, Miller's music has a Southern-fried edge and a transportive authenticity.

"The lyrics for 'Before Nightfall' are rooted in The Santa Fe Trails Diaries. I do a lot of deep-dive research for the themes in the songs, mostly in the history department. I try to make the songs land “vintage on arrival -- inevitable rather than arbitrary” – couched in real history, even though I may have to imagine and guess," explains JC Miller.

"In The Santa Fe Diaries, there is a section described in detail with a looming storm in the distance – it was so visceral and immediate, I was enraptured. Felt like I was there even though it was centuries ago. The writing allowed me to travel through time. The starkness of the diary entries brought real lost events to contemporary life".

Creating music for wanderers, Miller pays homage to his guitar and songwriting heroes, inspired by timeless artists like Neil Young, Leon Russell and The Band as much as the unfussy yet powerful prose of writers like Larry McMurtry, Ernest Hemingway and Cormac McCarthy.

“I’m not trying to hide my sources. I’m trying to add footnotes, carry on the southern and western, southwestern frame of mind," says JC Miller.

Under his solo moniker, making music is a labor of love for JC Miller, having earlier spent most of his career as a sideman and composer in the advertising world for clients like Coca-Cola, Nike and Levi’s. His songs are exercises in the journey to self-discovery, created with real instruments and authentic sounds with a unique contemporary twist.

Creating music that values timelessness over virtuosity, JC Miller traverses his own histories and the roots of Americana, often revealing truths about the history of his own family and country as a whole. Music became about rediscovering his family’s history by exploring America and, in turn, becoming a source of unearthing insight about himself.

With these songs, JC Miller is carrying on a tradition of American songwriting and creating guitar literature that is never ephemeral, evoking a classic sense of place and historical context. He admits, “I feel like I am representing another generation of storytellers. I’m trying to paint a picture through music, where the lens is focused on the deeply personal, but it can also be universal.”

As of June 7, 'Before Nightfall' will be available everywhere online, including SpotifyApple Music and elsewhere.
