Marillion unleash video for ‘A Friend For The Earth

“Don’t wanna say goodbye
But I’m watching the time
The flowers and the bees
Vanishing beneath our feet”

If you dive into Marillion’s extensive catalogue, you will find several songs that take on the topic of environment and humanity’s impact on it. The 1989 album and title track ‘Seasons End’ is only one of many examples.

Now, over 30 years later, in times of ‘Fridays For Future’, an ongoing pandemic and a general big uncertainty about the future of humanity, the topic does not lack relevance – quite the opposite!

Coinciding with Earth Day 2022, Marillion today release a new video accompanying what is chapter two and three of ‘Reprogram The Gene’, a song released on their new album ‘An Hour Before It’s Dark’ on March 4th, 2022.

While the song and video deliver a clear message on the one hand, Marillion also leave room for everyone to have their own flavour of what the words of this song are about.

Steve Hogarth about ‘A Friend Of The Earth’:
“We are not of the heavens. We are of the earth. And whether you like it or not, when it dies, it’s gonna take you with it. The planet is screaming in our faces like an approaching express train. Some of us can hear it but don’t listen. Some of us can’t even hear it. But getting out of its way is our only hope.
We’re at a tipping point right now.

Not to act, is suicide."

Too self-righteous? How about: Turn the thermostat down and eat more veg.

With ‘An Hour Before It’s Dark’”, Marillion released one of their most upbeat albums of their career while, at the same time, they once again did not shy away from uncomfortable topics, reflecting on their own behaviour, and putting their finger in the wounds of time.

The album topped the album charts worldwide, breaking the band’s chart records in several countries. In Germany and the Netherlands ‘An Hour Before It’s Dark’ went straight to #2 in the official album charts, making it the highest chart entry for the band in both countries to date, while in the UK the band also celebrated #2 in the official charts, their best chart position in over 30 years!

Marillion will embark on a major European and UK tour in autumn 2022, preceded by several Marillion weekends until summer 2022.

Marillion share their deep reflection on human interaction in the current global situation with their most upbeat single in many years.

With “An Hour Before It’s Dark”, Marillion release one of their most upbeat albums of their career while, at the same time, they once again do not shy away from uncomfortable topics, reflect on their own behaviour, and put their finger in the wounds of time.
Exactly one month before the album's release, the band shows how well this goes together with a new foretaste of their latest creation.

"Murder Machines" is a song that was born in the challenging times of lockdown and social distancing and has become so much more than just a mirror of our times, more than a song that deals with the precious as well as dark sides of human relationships.

Steve Hogarth about the story behind “Murder Machines”:
“I tried not to write about the virus. But it’s been so much a part of life for the past two years that it kept creeping in. The terrifying reality that to wrap my arms around my father or mother could ultimately kill them, gave birth to this song. The lyric was then developed to hint at jealousy and heartbreak - the pain of watching the woman you love embrace another man, or the emotional “murder” of the serial adulterer. And, of course, the arms of the superpowers, and the psychopaths who sometimes have their fingers on the triggers. Beware the murder machines...”

Like its predecessor, 2016's critically acclaimed and chart-topping album “F*** Everyone And Run (F E A R)”, “An Hour Before It's Dark” was recorded at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios, which also provided the perfect backdrop for the carefully chosen selection of behind-the-scenes footage in form of a documentary on the making of the album as well as a performance of “Murder Machines” which will be released together with the album.

“An Hour Before It’s Dark” - The new Marillion album to be released on March 4th, 2022. First single available now.

earMUSIC is delighted to announce the release of Marillion’s 20th studio album “An Hour Before It’s Dark” on March 4th, 2022. A first peek into the album is available as of now with the single “Be Hard On Yourself”.

"An Hour Before It's Dark" - Whether it's the last hour you were allowed to play outside as a child before you had to go home, a reference to the fight against time in relation to the climate crisis or the last minutes in a person's life, Marillion once again put their finger on the pulse of time. Be it social, political, or personal issues, Marillion have never minced words and have always found a way to combine them with their own unique sound, known for incredible songwriting, melodies and top-notch musicianship, while swimming against the tide, not bending to norms and limitations.

The first single "Be Hard On Yourself" from the upcoming album couldn't be a better example of this.

“Despite the seemingly bleak contemplations across this album - the virus, our mortality, medical science, care, AND Leonard Cohen (ha ha) - the overall feeling of the music is surprisingly upbeat. I think the band are as on form as they ever were really, and the addition of Choir Noir has added another new soul and colour to things” - h

MARILLION RELEASE SPECIAL LIVE ALBUM, RECORDED DURING A MAGICAL EVENING WITH THEIR FRIENDS FROM THE ORCHEST

“With Friends At St David’s” will be available on July 23rd, 2021, digital out now.
Out on earMUSIC -- distributed in North America by BFD/The Orchard.

On July 23rd, Marillion will release their new live album “With Friends At St David’s”, recorded in Cardiff in November 2019.

It all started with the release of “With Friends From The Orchestra” in 2019, when Marillion teamed up with “In Praise of Folly”, a string quartet accompanied by Sam Morris (French Horn) and Emma Halnan (Flute), to record a stunning album full of re-arranged Marillion treasures.

That same year, Marillion took these very special versions on tour and even added a few more highlights like "Gaza" and "Zeperated Out" to the setlist, presenting them in a whole new light.

"With Friends At St David's" is not only a visually and sonically remarkable live album, but also a dedication to crossing musical boundaries and making "friends" outside of one genre and musical universe. The DVD and Blu-ray of this release offer even more, as they come with the previously unreleased documentary "Making Friends", which shows Marillion in the studio during the making of "With Friends From The Orchestra".

With this release, Marillion offer a special treat to the fans and sweeten the wait for their new studio album currently in the works, the follow-up to the critically acclaimed and chart-topping “F*** Everyone And Run (F E A R)”.

Steve Hogarth about the album and tour: "Possibly our favourite ever tour. A chance for us to occasionally pause and lose ourselves in our six “classical" musicians interpreting our Producer Mike’s beautiful arrangements, bringing another emotional dimension, and often a playful joy to our music."

Seasons End”, originally from 1989’s album of the same name, is the first song to be revealed from this album along with an official video that grants an exclusive peak into a special and emotional evening, recorded on the 16th November 2019 during the Friends From The Orchestra Tour.

The official video can be watched below

With Friends From The Orchestra” is going to be released on earMUSIC as CD Digipak, 3LP Gatefold(180g), Ltd. Coloured 3LP (Violet transparent), DVD and Blu-ray on July 23rd, 2021.
