Life of Agony Announce "30 Years of Ugly" Tour Celebrating Iconic 1995 Album

Life of Agony are excited to announce the "30 Years of Ugly" tour, a celebration of their deeply personal 1995 release, Ugly (Roadrunner Records). For the first time in the band's history, the New York quartet will perform their sophomore album in its entirety, giving fans a rare opportunity to experience the full power and emotion of this critically lauded record in a live setting.

Ugly marked a major artistic evolution for the band, showcasing a rawer, more melodic side while still delivering the heavy grooves and anguished intensity that defined their debut, River Runs Red.

Lyrically, the album features some of the band's most beloved and emotionally resonant tracks, including "Let's Pretend," a haunting ballad that explores the pain of loss and denial; "Unstable," focusing on the devastating impact of cancer; "Lost at 22," an anthem of youthful confusion and desperation; and the title track "Ugly," a slow-burning, introspective piece that builds to a cathartic crescendo. Throughout, the album delves deeply into themes of depression, isolation, and despair, giving voice to emotional struggles with a rare honesty. Songs like "I Regret" and "Damned If I Do" revealed a more driving hard rock edge, while deep cuts like "Other Side of the River" and "How It Would Be" cemented the album's reputation as an unfiltered and affecting release in the metal/crossover canon.

"Everyone was expecting River Runs Red, Part 2, but Ugly was a left, right, and U-turn! People were like, 'Okay, this is different?!'" explains L.O.A. guitarist Joey Zampella. "It took some time to sink its hooks into our listeners, but when it did, it became a classic. I'm super excited to celebrate the 'Ugly Duckling' of the L.O.A. catalog!"

The U.S. leg of the tour kicks off September 19 in Bensalem, PA, and includes a special lineup featuring God Forbid. L.O.A. and God Forbid are then joined by Jasta, the solo project of Hatebreed frontman Jamey Jasta on September 20 at Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, NJ. Jasta will be the main support on the rest of the U.S. dates. Following the U.S. run, Life of Agony will head overseas in November for a full European leg, joined by special guests Ugly Kid Joe. This is meaningful and significant, because U.K.J. frontman Whitfield Crane took over lead vocals for L.O.A. in 1998, when Keith Caputo exited the group temporarily.

"Ugly was probably the most emotionally vulnerable record we ever made," says L.O.A. bassist Alan Robert. "It was a big risk back then—to release something so different from River Runs Red — but we were just in a much different headspace, and we always wore our hearts on our sleeves. The album ended up connecting with people in a deep, lasting way. Playing it live from front to back is going to be powerful for both the band and the fans."

"I'm very excited to get back out on the road to play Ugly in its entirety and to share the stage with God Forbid, our boy Jasta, and our good buddies from Ugly Kid Joe — along with our special friend Whitfield Crane," says L.O.A. singer Keith Caputo. "I might even have to convince Whit to sing an L.O.A. song with us out there. That would be so cool. I'm looking forward to creating more incredible moments with L.O.A. and making memories with great people in killer bands. Come hang out with us for an unforgettable night of music and entertainment."

Life Of Agony Premiere "The Crow (In Memory of B.L.)"

Back in 1995, the band covered Simple Minds' "Don't You (Forget About Me)" on the group's Ugly album; the song was made famous by the movie The Breakfast Club. In 1997, on their album Soul Searching Sun, a music video for the song "Desire" incorporated visuals reminiscent of Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. That tradition continues with a brand-new original track titled "The Crow (In Memory of B.L.)," which pays tribute to the fallen star Brandon Lee, who tragically lost his life during the filming of the cult-classic, released 30 years ago.

Life of Agony's "The Crow (In Memory of B.L.)" was recorded in New York City at the legendary Sear Sound studio, best known for hit albums by David Bowie and John Lennon, as well as at The Nest Studio, in Long Island, NY. The song was recorded, produced, and mixed by LOA’s guitarist Joey Zampella (who also co-produced the group's last album The Sound of Scars). The song was mastered by Grammy-award winner Howie Weinberg (Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Red Hot Chili Peppers).

With 2024 marking the 30th anniversary of Brandon Lee's Crow film, and all of the controversy surrounding the new Bill Skarsgård remake, Life of Agony felt inspired to go back and give respect to the '94 film that made such a huge impact on them during their early years.

"There's something very special about the original Crow that made it timeless, and there's a reason that it resonated with us as kids," explained LOA bassist Alan Robert. "It was an absolute tragedy… Brandon Lee was killed the year we did our first album River Runs Red, and by the time The Crow came out in '94, he was already a legend. Brandon completely embodied the role, made it iconic, and lost his life in the process. It was just so incredibly sad and affected us deeply. He was such a charismatic character and in the very beginning stages of his career. Director Alex Proyas captured lightning in a bottle."

A music video for Life of Agony's "The Crow (In Memory of B.L.)" was directed by Derek Soto/Sinestra Studios, with motion graphics by The Dor Brothers. Produced by Chris White + Life of Agony.

Life of Agony’s ALAN ROBERT Honors Alex Trebek, Bob Ross & Bowie w/ Colored Pages from New Book

The Beauty of Horror: Haunt of Fame is OUT NOW

mail-128.jpeg

Yesterday (August 24th) saw the release of the fifth installment from the wildly acclaimed coloring book series from Life of Agony bassist ALAN ROBERT. The Beauty of Horror: Haunt of Fame brings iconic pop culture luminaries back from the grave through wonderfully spirited re-imaginings of their signature looks. In celebration of the release, Alan has colored a small sampling of the pages from his new book, paying homage to venerable greats like Alex Trebek, Bob Ross, & David Bowie.

The Beauty of Horror: Haunt of Fame is OUT NOW and available on Amazon.

Speaking about the page dedicated to Alex Trebek, Alan shares:

“As a kid, my Dad watched Jeopardy religiously. Seeing Alex Trebek on our television every night was a big part of my life growing up,” explained Beauty of Horror creator Alan Robert. “And with this latest coloring book, I wanted to tap into that very personal nostalgia.” He added, “When fans add their colors and creativity to these parodies, they get to bring these stars “back to life” in a way that’s twisted, fun, and actually cathartic. After all, it is art therapy for the abnormal.”

Later this year, Robert is teaming up with top toy manufacturer NECA, best known for their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Alien, and Predator figures, to release the very first Beauty of Horror action figure. Based on the series’ fan-favorite Ghouliana, the 5” articulated figure is featured wearing her signature bat-wing dress as part of NECA’s Toony Terrors line.

“To see Ghouliana smiling her piranha-like grin alongside gruesome greats like The Nun, Scream’s Ghost Face, and Michael Myers is a huge honor for me,” explains creator Alan Robert. “I feel like my little undead girl is all grown up!”

Raven Banner launches hard-hitting Life of Agony doc THE SOUND OF SCARS at Cannes Market

mail-48.jpeg

Genre specialist, Raven Banner Entertainment has topped up its Cannes virtual market slate with The Sound of Scars, a deeply personal documentary which chronicles Brooklyn alt/metal band, Life of Agony's rise, fall and rebirth while confronting domestic violence, substance abuse and addiction, depression and lead singer Mina Caputo's gender transition.

Directed by Leigh Brooks and filmed across several countries while Life of Agony was on and off the road. "This isn't a typical music documentary. It's as personal as it gets," says director Brooks. "I first saw the band live at the London Astoria in 1996. Since then, Life of Agony has become an absolute go-to when I felt alone and insecure about myself. This film is an intimate portrait that sheds light on the real life stories that make their music so vital and relevant."

The film takes a deep dive into lead vocalist Mina Caputo’s gender transition. “We’ve never avoided tough conversations and we don’t pretend to have all the answers,” says Caputo. “But this film is a roadmap with many great lessons. It shows a ton of vulnerability... moments of falling downward and others where we rise strong. Enjoy this gift of imperfection. May you find the tools to be braver with this film."

The deal was negotiated between Leigh Brooks of Firebelly Films, Richard Moxon of Moxon Media Consultants, Alan Robert and Joey Zampella of Life of Agony (LOA), and Raven Banner’s Michael Paszt, Michael Da Silva and James Fler.

The Sound of Scars is one of the most intense 'punch in the face' documentaries we've seen in years,” states Raven Banner’s Michael Paszt. “We're looking forward to sharing the band's incredibly important story with everyone.”

The Sound of Scars utilizes personal archival footage, rare photographs and lost interviews, along with new, never-before-seen conversations with the band and their family members that tells the story of how three friends overcame domestic violence, substance abuse and depression to form one of the most influential bands in its genre. Through the success of their ground-breaking 1993 debut River Runs Red, hailed by Rolling Stone as “One of the Greatest Metal Albums of All Time”, they channelled their cumulative life stories into a soundtrack for a broken generation. At the time, that newfound fame allowed them to escape the tragedies of their pasts, but in the wake of their accomplishments, unforeseen obstacles arose.

“We've completely ripped our deepest selves open for this film,” says guitarist Joey Zampella. “The audience and our fan base will completely understand the mold we were broken from, and what this journey means to us."

“When we first started LOA over 30 years ago, I don’t think any of us could have predicted the impact that this band would have on so many people around the world,” says Alan Robert, bassist for Life of Agony. “We got together as a way of saving ourselves, but ultimately, through the music and the brutal honesty of the lyrics, we ended up saving so many others along the way.”

MINA CAPUTO Releases New Album 'The Mones'

Legendary frontwoman MINA CAPUTO has released her new solo album, titled 'The Mones'. Fans can check out the new record exclusively via Caputo's Bandcamp. After garnering a massive following as the vocalist for the world-renowned rock-alt/metal outfit Life of Agony, Caputo’s honed a reputation for touching listeners to the very depths of their souls with her poetry; her heartrending live performances are well-earned. Within a single show, she is capable of inciting arena-sized mosh pits in addition to breathless silence.

About MINA CAPUTO:

Throughout the last twenty years, Mina Caputo has recorded sixteen diversely influential albums—not including demos, live records or EPs—with an impressive who’s who of industry veterans, including bassist and trumpet player Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), guitarist Craig Ross (Lenny Kravitz, Eric Clapton, Sheryl Crow), pianist Zac Rae (Fiona Apple, Miley Cyrus, Annie Lennox), producer Martyn Lenoble (Jane’s Addiction, Scott Weiland, Porno for Pyros, Mark Lanegan, The Cult), mixer Greg Fidelman (Rage Against The Machine, Marilyn Manson, Johnny Cash), mixer Mike Shipley(The Cars, Queen, Aerosmith, Joni Mitchell), and most recently, producers Sylvia Massey (Tool, Life of Agony, System of a Down) and Joey Z. for Life of Agony’s 2019 release, “The Sound of Scars.” On the festival circuit, she has shared stages with multitudes of varying genre titans, among them Coldplay, Nine Inch Nails, Björk, David Bowie, Pixies, Velvet Revolver, Bush, Slipknot, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Laura Jane Grace, Modest Mouse, Aphex Twin, Foo Fighters, and more. With distinctive influences ranging from Led Zeppelin and The Doors to Arthur Rimbaud and William S. Burroughs, Mina is unafraid to mine new musical territory, as evidenced by her most recent releases: “A Fondness for Hometown Scars,” “As Much Truth as One Can Bear," ”Love Hard,” and her 2020 release, “The Mones.”

Mina also has frequently co-collaborated with Grammy-nominated multi-instrumentalist producer Andy Kravitz (Cypress Hill, Billy Joel, Imogen Heap, Julianna Hatfield), whom she met during the Life of Agony “Soul Searching Sun” recording sessions in the late 1990s. Kravitz co-produced and was heavily present on her last three albums, “Love Hard,” “As Much Truth as One Can Bear,” and now “The Mones,” which also features such guests as John (Norwood) Fisher (Fishbone), Rick Boston (Joe Cocker) ,” and longtime frequent collaborator Rob Mastrianni. Kravitz was also involved on her ambient-infused rock fusion duo side project with Ryan Oldcastle as The Neptune Darlings bringing their two releases, “Chestnuts and Fireflies” and “Principium Sequentia.”

Obsessed with hard truths, Caputo remains an intrepid conquistador of her own pain. Orphaned by heroin-addicted parents, Mina was forced to grow up in a dark world of poverty, violence and crime. And while themes of abuse and abandonment may seem familiar to those who follow her work, Caputo innovatively sheds new light on these subjects with every song she creates. As unorthodox as her lyrical content can sometimes be, the most surprising aspect about Mina is her undying romanticism—her unwavering insistence on seeing the silver lining in every cloud. As Caputo herself says, “From my own feelings of displacement, dissatisfaction and yearning, comes a vast sea of compassion.”

SAN DIEGO, CA (November 17, 2020) – With virtual hangouts becoming the new normal during the pandemic, it was only a matter of time until a spirit from beyond decided to crash a Zoom. See what happens when four friends get more than they bargained for when they experiment with a ghostly prompt from the hit Beauty of Horror ‘Haunt This Journal’.

“I wish I had a book like this when I was growing up,” laughs Beauty of Horror creator (and Life of Agony bassist) Alan Robert. “At a very young age, I became obsessed with everything horror and my friends and I would try to connect with the supernatural through Ouija boards and amateur séances. I took that playful curiosity from my childhood and poured it into every creepy page of The Beauty of Horror ‘Haunt This Journal’. A journal like this can be a very personal experience, or as you can see with the video, it can also be a fun group activity… just be careful who you invite!”
