A ROSE ON THE ROAD (At the traffic lights) JULES MAXWELL (featuring Polly Scattergood)

Archangelo Recordings is proud to announce the release of A Rose On The Road (At The Traffic Lights) by Jules Maxwell and Polly Scattergood on Friday 30th June 2023.

A Rose On The Road first appeared as an instrumental on Jules Maxwell's exquisite 2022 album Cycles. The title however had originated from a suggestion made by Polly Scattergood and, after the Cycles release, she and Jules continued to develop this darkly cinematic vocal version. Featuring Scattergood's quietly seductive words and Maxwell's delicate orchestration, the song paints a picture of a city, late at night and dark events unfolding, unnoticed, in plain sight.

The track is also available in a remixed version by Glowlines.

Jules Maxwell is a multi-instrumentalist composer and songwriter.

He plays keyboards for Australian band Dead Can Dance and in May 2021 released a critically acclaimed album with Lisa Gerrard, entitled Burn.

In 2021 he also released Nocturnes on Archangelo Recordings - a beautifully melancholic collection of instrumental pieces, much of it written in collaboration with the UK dance company Vincent Dance Theatre.

This was followed in 2022 by a second volume of instrumentals entitled Cycles.

He composed 4 songs for Le Mystére des Voix Bulgares 2018 album Boocheemish and the song First of July which appeared on Foy Vance’s debut album Hope.

Jules has also collaborated with Duke Special on numerous recordings, shows and projects including the 2009 National Theatre production of Mother Courage directed by Deborah Warner.

His work at Shakespeare’s Globe, includes the 2016 production of The Merchant of Venice starring Jonathan Pryce and the 2017 production of Boudica starring Gina McKee.

He has created modern dance soundtracks for Wayne McGregor, Cathy Marston, Vincent Dance Theatre, Bern Ballet, Skanes Dansteater Malmö, Jasmin Vardimon and Candoco Dance Company and in 2019 his debut full length opera The Lost Thing was presented by the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

2023 marks the release of One Night in Porto, a live recording of his Burn show with Lisa Gerrard.

Jules Maxwell is originally from Ireland but currently lives in London with his wife and young son.

Polly Scattergood is a British-based indie electronic artist who enjoys experimenting with sound and lyrics. Polly studied at The Brit School before signing with Daniel Miller - Mute/EMI.

Polly has released four studio albums, three under her own name and one as a side project called onDeadWaves with Mercury-nominated MAPS.

Polly set up her own label and studio, "Future Paradise," based on the Kent Coast and released her last album and EP through FP.

Polly's latest full-length album entitled "In This Moment," charted at number 23 on the Official UK Independent Album Charts.

Polly also hosts a podcast alongside Katie Melua called "The Detail" about the art of songwriting and making records.

Polly is currently in the process of writing her fifth studio album.

Dead Can Dance singer Lisa Gerrard and Irish composer Jules Maxwell release an extended Deluxe edition of their critically acclaimed 2021 album, ‘BURN’

“Burn is as essential as anything else in Gerrard’s unique songbook”

“Burn is the world music equivalent of seeing life in bright colour for the first time”higherplainmusic.com

“It is with great pleasure that I share this expanded edition of the BURN album. Jules Maxwell and I began our creative collaboration with Dead Can Dance, and immediately realised that we had a shared connection through improvisation.
This new edition includes Jules’ original demos and coincides with our first live concerts of the BURN album in Portugal this coming November”

The record’s beginnings go all the way back to 2012 when Jules Maxwell was brought in by Dead Can Dance as a keyboard player on their Anastasis World Tour. He and the band’s singer Lisa Gerrard created a new piece called Rising Of The Moon’, which was performed as the gripping final encore of each show. By the time the tour finished in Santiago, Chile in 2013 a strong affinity had begun to develop between the two of them and further opportunities to collaborate with each other resulted over subsequent years.

In 2015, when Maxwell was asked to submit songs for the Bulgarian choir Le Mystère des Voix Bulgaresalbum Boocheemish, he approached Gerrard once again to co-write material for the new release. Having

travelled to Australia to work in her home studio, the pair came away with four new songs for that release, as well as the building blocks for this new venture together.

With James Chapman (aka MAPS) joining the duo as producer, ideas began to be generated freely and over time a distinct sound for their work began to emerge.

Speaking about the creative flow between the three musicians, Jules said, “I’ve never worked on anything which was so frictionless creatively as this. Very little was ever said. Communication happened only through the music. We accepted without question what each other offered to the feast. There was an enormous generosity on all sides. I sometimes think we talk too much anyway when creating music, when there is no need really. The music says it all”

With Lisa remaining in Australia, Jules adding keyboards and percussion from his studio in Northern France, and James bringing new light to the sound from England, the three were literally worlds apart but somehow these worlds became fused in the music.

James Chapman recalls “I felt a real sense of freedom and enjoyment while working with Jules and Lisa, and that feeling comes across in the sound of the songs. An otherworldly, expansive sense of wonder where anything is possible."

Jules added, “Sifting through Lisa’s vocal performances felt like panning for gold. That was the starting point for sure. There were some big nuggets in there but also loads of little sparkles and very quickly the music we were creating became curiously dramatic. Cinematic. It also seemed to transcend eras. To me it feels a bit like early Vangelis but it also has a distinct Celtic influence somewhere below the surface. The music is not afraid to be courageous. There are many audacious elements and moments within each piece”

The ‘Burn’ Deluxe Edition consists of the seven original tracks from the album, plus Jules Maxwell’s original 2015 demos.

Jules Maxwell reflects, “It took BURN nearly six years to be finally released, and over time I pretty much forgot about my original demos from 2015. I just rejoiced in the fact that JAMES CHAPMAN had utterly transformed the songs with his sonic and arrangement choices. But when I heard the demos again I realised that what he has done brilliantly is take our ideas and remix them in glorious widescreen whilst maintaining the energy of the original ideas in the final versions. I think, as a collection, this new expanded edition gives listeners a fascinating insight into our creative process.

deeper sleeper

Jules Maxwell’’s first single from the forthcoming Cycles album is an intriguingly hypnotic piece of work. A simple piano motif builds and expands and intensifies like some dark movie soundtrack. It is an exquisite and affecting piece of music, accompanied by an equally compelling video featuring a snail filmed in his garden. The secret of Maxwell’s music is that its simplicity allows the listener space to contemplate deeper, and in so doing discover a world of detail and complexity.

“Working with Dead Can Dance for the past decade has taught me a lot about composition” explains Maxwell. “Brendan and Lisa’s music is dense and poetic, but actually at it’s core it is constructed from beautifully simple strands. Like life. In my opinion that is why people can identify with it. Simplicity for me as a composer is the Holy Grail. I have spent my whole career trying to simplify and distill ideas to their essence, and allow my music to breathe”

For fans of Radiohead, Max Richter and Ryuichi Sakamoto.

Singles by DEAD CAN DANCE's LISA GERRARD & JULES MAXWELL

The operatic tics of Gerrard’s voice merge with Maxwell’s anthemic, cinematic music spectacularly”MOJO Magazine

Dead Can Dance's Lisa Gerrard and DCD member Jules Maxwell
have been on a beautiful journey of sonic and visual exploration this year, releasing their stunning 'Burn' album and gradually unveiling rather diverse videos to accompanying each track. Now they present 'Keson (Until My Strength Returns)', created by David Daniels, who has done motion graphic design, art direction and projections for two Bryan Adams world tours, the Led Zeppelin o2 concert, Roger Waters The Wall - Berlin, plus films showcased all around the world.

Produced by James Chapman (MAPS) and released via Atlantic Curve, a London-based label that is part of the Schubert Music Europe, the entire album is euphoric and compelling; more inventive than what they had worked on separately in the past. From gentle beginnings, each track builds and intensifies, creating a hypnotic experience to listen to from start to finish.

Lisa Gerrard
explains, "Keson implores us to live in our dreams and befriend our soul". Jules Maxwell adds, "This again is an intense, emotional listen for me. I love the final note and how it lasts".

"There is a sense of melancholy here, but also a sense of hope. Lisa's vocals have such emotional depth, and they really connected with me on this track," says James Chapman.

This video follows the recently released singles 'Orion (The Weary Huntsman)', 'Heleali (The Sea Will Rise)' and 'Aldavyeem (A Time To Dance)'.

'Burn' took root over seven years ago, when Lisa met Irish theatre composer Jules Maxwell and they began working together for the first time. Gerrard and Maxwell later began writing songs for their earlier collaboration for 'The Mystery Of The Bulgarian Voices (Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares)'.

Quickly sold out as a Non-Fungible Token (NFT) via the eco-friendly platform Hic Et Nunc, the ‘Burn’ LP is out now on vinyl, CD and digitally, available everywhere, including Apple Music, Spotify and at https://orcd.co/lisajulesburn.

Dead Can Dance frontwoman Lisa Gerrard and DCD member Jules Maxwell open a new audio-visual chapter in the 'Burn' album experience by revealing 'Orion (The Weary Huntsman)' with its breathtaking build from start to finish.

"Orion’s journey is long and at times heartbreaking," says Lisa Gerrard.

The accompanying video was created by David Daniels, who has created motion graphic design, art direction and projections for two Bryan Adams world tours, Led Zeppelin o2 concert, Roger Waters The Wall, Berlin, in addition to animated films showcased at Paris' Pompidou Centre, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte, Reina Sofia, Madrid and film festivals around the world.

"This video is composed of hundreds of photos from personal archive, overlaid and digitally treated, then overlaid again and again in an attempt to create an active painting, that moves from black and white to colour. A walk as such through a forest," says David Daniels.

"I could always hear how this track could evolve in a huge way sonically, and I was allowed the freedom to explore that. Lisa and Jules created a stunning, almost lullaby-type song, and we aimed to maintain that innocent beauty while also expanding the track sonically," says James Chapman (MAPS), who produced the 'Burn' LP, out now via Atlantic Curve, a London-based label that is part of the Schubert Music Europe.

Lisa Gerrard and Jules Maxwell, best known for their work as part of the legendary band Dead Can Dance, present the studio album 'Burn'. Produced by James Chapman (MAPS), this long-play is being released via Atlantic Curve, a London-based label that is part of the Schubert Music Europe.

The record began its journey more than seven years ago, when Lisa met Irish theatre composer Jules Maxwell before working together for the first time. Things really took root when Gerrard and Maxwell began writing songs for their earlier collaboration 'The Mystery Of The Bulgarian Voices (Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares)'. They were later introduced to Chapman and asked him to produce this album, which represents a stunning departure for all three of them.

Jules Maxwell explains: “‘Burn’ was never planned to be an album. Like many joyous things in life, it grew slowly and unexpectedly. One song at a time. The seeds had been planted by Lisa and I whilst we were working on songs for another album, but didn’t begin to flower until months, years later. Without Daryl Bamonte’s tenacious encouragement and James Chapman’s sonic vision it would not have come to fruition at all. Lisa Gerrard is in my opinion one of the most important singers of her generation and it continues to be an enormous privilege for me to be working with her. What we have created still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up from time to time. Listen to it in one go from beginning to end if you can.”

Lisa Gerrard introduces this long-play “The album begins with ‘Heleali’, a meditation on the eternal rise and fall of the tides. It is a call to let go of the past and reflect on the elusive shadows of evaporation.”

With Chapman joining the duo as producer, ideas generated freely and over time, a distinct sound for their work began to emerge. Their focus was to create something that was both euphoric and compelling; more inventive than what they had worked on separately in the past. From gentle beginnings, each track builds and intensifies, creating a hypnotic experience to listen to from start to finish. With Lisa remaining in Australia, Jules adding his keys and percussion from France, and James bringing new light to the sound from England, the three were literally worlds apart, but those worlds fused in this music.

“It was such a huge honour for me to work with Lisa and Jules in making this album, and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole process. My role was really to build on the ideas, and it was a pleasure to work with such rich and exciting material. I was very grateful to be given the freedom to explore the production, there was a real trust between everyone from the beginning, which made things very exciting for me. Having such freedom from the start enabled me to be more confident in the ideas, which in turn created more possibilities with the choices that were made. When I listen to the album now, I feel that freedom and excitement within each track,” says James Chapman.

Sosna's video is among seven specially commissioned films to accompany the release of the album. The first of these, created by Polish director Jacob Chelkowski’s video for the title track 'Noyalain (Burn)', proves more than a little provocative in these days of Covid, as it portrays the simple, traumatic act of touching.

In early March, Jules Maxwell also released his sophomore solo album 'Nocturnes’ - the debut release for the newly-formed Archangelo Recordings. This beautifully melancholic collection of instrumental pieces was written and recorded over the past four years, much of it in collaboration with the acclaimed UK-based Vincent Dance Theatre.

'Deshta (Forever)' and 'Noyalain (Burn)' are both available digitally across online platforms, including Apple Music and Spotify. The full ‘Burn’ album, set for release on May 7, can be pre-ordered on vinyl, CD and digitally at https://orcd.co/lisajulesburn

+++ ‘Burn’ album will be released on May 7, 2021

+++ This is their first release via the Atlantic Curve label

Lisa Gerrard and Jules Maxwell, best known for their work as part of the legendary band Dead Can Dance, present 'Deshta (Forever)', the second single from their forthcoming studio album 'Burn'. The accompanying video is directed by cinematographer Michal Sosna.
Produced by James Chapman (MAPS), the long-play will be released on May 7 via Atlantic Curve, a London-based label that is part of the Schubert Music Europe.

"Deshta recalls a dream of eternity, spinning fearlessly into the perpetual Light," says Lisa Gerrard.

Jules Maxwell adds: “Deshta has a dark brooding quality. James Chapman’s production has helped draw out a raw earthiness to the piece and Michal Sosna’s accompanying video is brilliantly disquieting and human at the same time.”

The record began its journey more than seven years ago, when Lisa met Irish theatre composer Jules Maxwell before working together for the first time. "With 'Deshta (Forever) the aim was to create a huge, expansive and spacious sound. It is a dark, uplifting and mysterious journey. The call and response sections in the vocals are especially haunting. It is a very immersive track, and it was a joy to work on," says James Chapman.

Lisa Gerrard and Jules Maxwell (Dead Can Dance) release ‘Noyalain’ single, first taster of their much-anticipated 'Burn' LP

Lisa Gerrard and Jules Maxwell, best known for their work as part of the legendary band Dead Can Dance, present ‘Noyalain (Burn’, the first single from their forthcoming studio album 'Burn'. Produced by James Chapman (MAPS), the long-play will be released on May 7 via Atlantic Curve, a London-based label that is part of the Schubert Music Europe.

“Noyalain is a song of welcome. An invitation to walk in peace, unlock the passive passion within, engage in the diversity of life and celebrate,” says Lisa Gerrard.

“It is with great pleasure that I share this collaboration with Jules Maxwell. Jules and I began our creative journey with Dead Can Dance. We realised that we could connect through improvisation and that musical exploration continues to evolve with this present work.”
Under this new guise, Gerrard and Maxwell have created an album that presents a wonderfully diverse mix of electronica, alternative, cinematic soundscape and world music with hints of early Vangelis.

Their focus was to create a sound that was both euphoric and compelling, more inventive than what they had worked on separately in the past. From gentle beginnings, each track builds and intensifies, creating a hypnotic experience to listen to from start to finish.

“Noyalain is the first song we created which began to play images in my mind’s eye. Widescreen images of far horizons and great landscapes. Of the living world at it’s most devastatingly beautiful,” says Jules Maxwell.

With Lisa remaining in Australia, Jules adding his keys and percussion from France, and James bringing new light to the sound from England, the three were literally worlds apart, but those worlds fused in this music.
