Electronic-dreampop outfit Strange Fruit releases surreal 'Drips' EP, a cosmic motorik trip

Indonesian electro-bliss outfit Strange Fruit presents their new 'Drips' EP, a lucid trip to the edge of sonic consciousness, released by Gentle Tuesday Recordings. A defining moment in the band’s evolution, this release unifies fragments of their kosmische experimentation over the past 11 years to achieve a more cohesive sonic identity. It also sees the Jakarta-based collective step into a new league with the involvement of world-class producers Hardway Bros, Tom Furse and Jonathan Kusuma in this release.

The band also share the video for the highlight track 'Monopolar', a sensory explosion that keeps us suspended between dream and awareness, between that which is surreal and radiant. Gradually fading and blurred in technicolor, the video is directed by Mellow Splice, who also created the EP cover artwork, reflecting the track’s fluid and surreal qualities through abstract, water-like imagery.

Strange Fruit is Baldi Calvianca (vocals & synth), Irza Aryadiaz (synth), John Tampubolon (guitar), Nabil Favian (bass) and Dino Kristianto (drums). Since their 2015 debut EP 'Dolphin Leap' via Leeds Records, they've moved fluidly between noise pop, krautrock, shoegaze and electronica. Now converging into a more focused, hybrid sound with deeper integration of electronic elements, this EP is driven by machine-led rhythms and analog textures, fusing emotional depth with rhythmic precision.

Rooted in hauntology, Strange Fruit drift deep into all the right places. 'Iridescent' channels a sense of dancefloor euphoria through minimalist beats and atmospheric layering, balancing introspection with forward momentum while finding a luminous dimension within darkness and adversity.

The title track, 'Drips', celebrates the band’s roots, blending shoegaze textures and electronic elements to create a dense, immersive soundscape. Sentimental yet rebellious, the interplay of rough guitar and bass noise with hybrid electronic textures creating a sense of hazy reverie. Baldi Calvianca’s vocals sounds mercurial, merging with bursts of light.

'Pouvoir Moteur' brings steady motorik rhythms, where repetitive sensations flow seamlessly down an endless highway. Irza Aryadiaz explains: “Here we take the obsession with factory machinery operated by humans and represent it through the repetitive 4/4 beats of German krautrock. It feels like breaking through space and time when the drum pattern is played consistently, moving nonstop.”

With unexpected song structures, chord progressions and subtle embellishments, this EP was produced with electronic producer Bernardus Fritz, who shares, “Strange Fruit's strength lies in their ability to create synthesizer sounds that are reverberant, wide, and surreal. Each track tells a story—there’s a journey between scenes, with cosmic sound design that reflects us as beings living in a different galaxy."

For this EP, Strange Fruit worked with three notable producers, who reinterpreted original tracks without compromising their original essence. Sean Johnstone a.k.a. Hardway Bros—a renowned UK DJ known for founding A Love From Outer Spacewith Andrew Weatherall—infuses downtempo elements and channels a slower club-house atmosphere.  Jonathan Kusuma, a prominent member of Jakarta’s Dekadenz collective, explores extended leftfield disco with a strong focus on echo-rich, repetitive bass drum tempos.

Strange Fruit also worked with Tom Furse of The Horrors and now with MIEN(alongside The Black Angels' Alex Maas and Elephant Stone's Rishi Dhir). Re-envisioning 'Monopolar' with slower breakbeat grooves, noisier ambient textures and acid house influences, the band joins an exclusive club of artists remixed by Furse, including Tame Impala, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Temples and The Twilight Sad.

As of April 3, the 'Drips' EP is available across digital platforms via Gentle Tuesday Recordings, including Spotify, Apple Music and Bandcamp. It will be released on cassette on April 17, followed by a physical vinyl release, planned for mid-2026 in collaboration with Loide Records (SEA & Japan territories) and TipTop Records(Worldwide territories excluding SEA & Japan).
