Chronologically speaking, while Graham Brooks falls into the generational social construct known as “the millennial,” in actuality the Barishi guitarist/vocalist is an old soul, wise and talented beyond his years. Sure, he’s got an all-in-one cellular device in his pocket like just about everyone else on the planet, but you’ll rarely find him obsessively staring into it unless necessary. He was scouring used book and record stores for classics long before it was deemed cool by the hipsters of his cohort and when it comes time to actually listening to his vinyl finds – instead of mounting them for show or posting “Look at what I bought” online missives – he prefers lengthy, involved and protracted pieces of music in direct opposition to the quick fixes required to sate the miniscule attention spans of kids these days.

Furthermore, when Brooks’ name comes up in conversation, a soon-to-be classic yarn quickly follows: last year, he was asked to provide a guest spot solo record on Cable’s Take the Stairs to Hell album. Instead of utilizing modern and available technology and facelessly recording and emailing in his contribution, the worryingly tall gentle giant drove five hours non-stop from his home in central Vermont to a Boston recording studio, laid down his solo in a matter of minutes then almost immediately got back in his car and drove the five hours home. Without a hint of self-consciousness or ironic arrogance, he’ll divulge, “I definitely have an interest in old stuff. I guess people would call me an atavist. I like to read about archeology and history and old empires and stuff like that. I remember hearing someone talk about the fleeting nature of smoke and its age throughout time and that seemed interesting to me.”

This is the launch pad for Barishi’s newest album, Old Smoke. The Green Mountain State metallic shape-shifters’ third album roils along with feet in both the distant past and foreseeable future. The record is a fulcrum for the conglomeration and combination of metal from black, progressive, doom and sludge subgenres aligned with a variety of rock musics, including classic, roots, Americana and indie. For Barishi, there are no sonic barriers, no musical borders, everything is welcome and the result of throwing all available ingredients into a melting pot to create a powerful sum of parts. It’s a notion that grizzled urbanites and dichotomous us-against-them thinkers might view as achingly naive or treacherously liberal, but in the alchemical context of novel robustness emerging from the distillation of the best of disparate parts, Old Smoke exists as a beacon of light and strength. This is something Brooks attributes not only to the experience the band has gained since forming in 2010, but also the isolation of growing up as hopeful metalheads in rural Vermont.

As a pre-teen, Brooks’ family moved him to the tiny village of West Dover in order to live and eventually work on the family farm, where he lives and works to this day. While precociously and proudly sporting an Iron Maiden shirt at the grocery store one day, he was spotted by, and became friends with, Dylan Blake and the two joined forces when they ended up at the same high school in town.

“Dylan was known around as a drum wizard, I played guitar and [bassist] John [Kelley] got into metal a little later, but we were always friends so we just started rocking out together and have just stuck with it.

“Early on, we didn’t know anybody or how to get shows until this guy in Burlington started running this thing called Metal Mondays at a club called Nectars, which is the place Phish got their start at,” he says about the band’s primordial age. “That was where we were able to become a little more professional, figure out what we were doing and what we wanted to do. But Vermont’s cool because it’s so isolated and because there’s not a lot to do people come out to metal shows. Some old hippie will come out and have a great time just because that’s what’s happening in town. It’s small enough that there are no scene politics with this genre of kids versus that genre of kids; if there’s a show, people go to it. I think that attitude has allowed us to do our own thing while playing to everybody. Once in a while I’ll talk to somebody from a big city and they’ll mention the woes of trying to play to fans of a certain subgenre and how it never goes over. We don’t really have that in Vermont.”

Originally an instrumental band called Atlatl, the band joined forces with vocalist Sascha Simms and switched to the Barishi moniker in 2012. The then-quartet recorded and self-released a self-titled album in 2013 which caught the eye and ear of the likes of Decibel, Metal Hammer, New Noise, and, most importantly, Season of Mist. Being offered a recording contract slathered the Barishi camp in surprise (“We had done a fair bit of DIY touring, but it wasn’t like we were the big local band or had any buzz at all”) and sparked a growing ambition which begat the band’s 2016 album, Blood from the Lion’s Mouth. Shortly after the debut’s release though, Simms and the band parted ways which put Barishi in a holding pattern for a few months until they decided to stop looking for a replacement and fill the position internally.

“We tried a few other singers until I ended up grabbing the vocal reins. There weren’t hordes of disappointed fans or protesting crowds of Sascha loyalists,” Brooks says with a self-deprecating laugh, “so it made it easier to make the sort of identity change that most bands would worry about. Plus, it was hard to find people willing to give up as much as you have to and put in the work to be in a band.”

Once they traversed the hurdle of Simms’ departure, the now-trio discovered a new side of the band. Now that they didn’t have to concern themselves with what to do with a vocalist during lengthy instrumental parts, the songs got longer, more exploratory, grandiose and epic. Add on to that the fact that Old Smoke was gestated over a three year period and it becomes clear why this album brims with a monumental magnanimity.

“Not having a vocalist meant we could do our thing a little more. This was also the first time we demo-ed things extensively and through that process I was able to get a better perspective on the songs and shape them a little bit more towards something we’d want to listen to. I remember having a conversation with a friend about our shared love of Iron Maiden and one of us said something about Maiden being one of those bands that, when you put on a song, you instantly feel like you’re going on a quest. I thought that was bad ass and really wanted to write songs that could be considered ‘quest-worthy.’ I’d say that was a big thing when we were writing these songs: writing longer songs that went somewhere without making them seem cumbersome.”

Despite the excellence of Old Smoke, Barishi is humble and fully cognizant of their position as low rung on the ladder at Season of Mist, in particular, and in the metal scene, in general. Brooks reveals without hesitation that “I’m still surprised we weren’t dropped after losing a charismatic frontman like Sascha,” and that “We’re still new to and nervous about playing big markets like NYC” despite recent tours with Weedeater and Tombs. But with tracks like the lassoed meandering of awesome album opener “The Silent Circle,” the sinister black metal/noise rock slashing of “The Longhunter” and the sky-opening prog-metal enormity of the title track leading the charge, Old Smoke is set to make an indelible mark on the metal scene; one dripping with passion for the art of progressive song writing, honest creative expression and the hunt for one’s individual voice while paying homage to the well-worn parts of record collections.

“A big goal we have is having the band catch up to our tastes in music. Sometimes people have good taste in music, but what they create doesn’t always reflect the quality of that taste. I like to think I have good taste in music and I think we’re starting to reflect that in the music we make. There are bands we really respect that can write super-long, beautiful songs you can listen to and it sucks if you get interrupted because you want to listen to the whole thing in one shot. We want to have songs like that, songs you look forward to listening to. We also want to have an enjoyable creative process in creating something that sits well with us; to make something that survives the long term and is a fair representation of the stuff we’re into.”

Old Smoke it is, then!

Born in Red Bank, New Jersey, the early days of Monster Magnet were a cosmos away from the major-label, alternative rock boom that would suck the band into the shiny MTV world of the early to middle 90s. Originally formed by Dave Wyndorf, John McBain and Tim Cronin, Monster Magnet came into the world with a lysergic ooze in 1989 with two demo tapes – ‘Forget About Life, I’m High On Dope’ and ‘I’m Stoned, What Ya Gonna Do About It?’ – making it perfectly clear from the start where they were coming from.

This was a band reveling in bad trips and the death of the hippy dream with a Manson Family stare, playing squelchy lo-fi psychedelic music with a rabid punk rock sneer, like The Stooges terrorizing Hawkwind at the most unpleasant free festival imaginable. There were tales of entire audiences at their gigs being spiked with LSD. It didn’t matter if this was true or not, it all added to the mystique. This was indeed a satanic drug thing, you wouldn’t understand.

Those two demos formed the base of what would become their pivotal ‘Spine Of God’ album from 1991 and the ’25…Tab’ EP, which featured the mesmerizing 32-minute opus itself, "Tab".

Long considered to be the true essence of Magnet’s early psychedelic voyages, "Tab" is finally returning to earth’s stratosphere with the release of ‘Test Patterns: Vol.1’, available November 11 via God Unknown Records on 12” vinyl.

Test Patterns: Vol. 1’ features a 2021 remix of "Tab" by John McBain, alongside the original demo, recorded in 1988 and then released on the aforementioned ‘Forget About Life, I’m High On Dope’ in 1989.

When Magnet started, John and I worked in record stores in Red Bank and Dave worked in the comic bookstore and we made a lot of tapes for each other,” recalls Tim Cronin. “A lot of ‘check this shit out’ kind of stuff…Hawkwind, early UFO, Amon Duul, Can, Skullflower, Morgen, Loop, Crystalized Movements, early Alice Cooper, Walking Seeds, Butthole Surfers, Spacemen 3. When we recorded the first demo and got to "Tab", we just beat the shit out of it until it became heavy, noisy, weird, mean and either too long or not long enough, depending on your mood. Everything we wanted in a song (at least everything I wanted in a song), punishingly psychedelic. Jersey Shore krautrock.

Test Patterns: Vol. 1’ will be available in two 12” vinyl editions - a deluxe gatefold sleeve with acid blotter inner sleeve and a special Rough Trade Super Deluxe edition with gatefold sleeve, limited to 300 copies with 4 postcards, blotter inner sleeve, ‘orange sunshine’ coloured vinyl and alternative cover artwork.

THE MOON CITY MASTERS Bring Back '70s Feel-Good Rock with 'The Famous Moon City Masters' Album!

Brooklyn, NY based, New Wave of Classic Rock twin maestros, Jordan and Talor Steinberg, best known as THE MOON CITY MASTERS, has announced the release of their debut LP, The Famous Moon City Masters! Featuring a selection of the last ten singles from the band, including the wildly popular, effervescent original singles "Takin It Back" and "Where You Wanna Run To," The Famous Moon City Masters is due to be released November 4, 2022.

"Dulcet, sunshiney 70s nostalgia (with healthy lashings of 80s joie de vivre in the video), delivered with harmonised flair by Brooklyn twins Moon City Masters. Imagine Blind Faith having a jolly old time with the Allmans and you’re on the right track. Good clean retro fun." - Classic Rock Magazine

The Moon City Masters are a neo-classic rock band with a contemporary edge and more than a hint of soul and funk. The band, consisting of twin brothers, Jordan and Talor Steinberg, brings together the whole package, with virtuosic playing and singing combined with excellent songcraft and an aesthetic that is all their own. It's the unique MCM vibe that makes outlets like Classic Rock Magazine say that their music is full of "heart, harmonies and rays of California sunshine." Ever since they first picked up their instruments at the tender age of 12 after their dad took them to see the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the brothers have been cranking out riffs and tunes with preternatural ability.

Initially, they both picked up guitars, but Jordan soon switched to bass. Over the course of the next several years, they honed their singing and playing chops to a fine edge. The band kicked their songwriting into overdrive when they started working with Grammy-nominated producer Justin Craig. The band released their debut E.P., The Adventures of the Moon City Masters in late 2019. Since then, they’ve been hard at work recording and releasing singles. They will be playing dates around the country as the world opens up again. They can’t wait to see you there.

All-star project FEELINGLESS to release "Metal Against Animal Cruelty"; First Single feat. Björn Strid of SOILWORK Out Now!

December 2nd will see the release of Metal Against Animal Cruelty, the first offering by all-star project Feelingless. Brought to life by Hugo Markaida, member of Spanish melodic death metal band Rise to Fall, Feelingless is a project to support animal rights and to give a voice to the voiceless. Featuring top notch guest appearances by the likes of Björn Strid (Soilwork), Jon Howard (Threat Signal), Christian Älvestam (Solution .45, Miseration) and Ettore Rigotti & Claudio(Disarmonia Mundi) - just to name a few - Metal Against Animal Crueltyoffers eleven tracks and will be coming out via powerhouse label Noble Demon. All proceeds raised from this release will be donated to local animal shelters in Spain, and in addition, the label will donate to an international animal welfare organization.

Founder and Feelingless mastermind Hugo Markaida comments:

"The project was born in the middle of the pandemic, although it was an idea that had been germinating for a long time. My taste for this kind of projects began when I discovered, a few years before picking up the guitar, "The metal opera Pt. 1" by Avantasia in a local music store. An album that brought together many of my favorite heavy and power metal singers that, wrapped in a medieval fantasy concept, was for a teenager like me an object of devotion. If we jump in time to the moment when I was composing the material that would make up the fifth album of my band Rise To Fall, just moments before the pandemic, many of the ideas and compositions that I liked the most did not specifically fit to the band and, as in every album, I had to put them aside."

He continues:

"Still thinking about that Avantasia album that impacted me when I was a teenager, to bring out a project of that magnitude myself with my favorite singers must have had a sense of importance for the person I am today. Something special that would draw attention to one of the causes I am most committed to. And, incidentally, to support it with the profits resulting from the project."

"Both my partner and I are animal lovers, and we live surrounded by rescued animals. That is why it seemed important to me that, at a time when the whole of humanity was suffering from a global crisis and its consequences, we could not forget the most vulnerable. Thus, I began to outline the concept of the album around the exploitation and mistreatment of animals. I was willing to work with the best and most favorite of my artists, so I started composing the songs thinking beforehand about who was going to interpret them. I told the participating artists all about the project and its charitable nature, with no profit for the artists involved in favor of associations that help animals in need. It was touching to see how my idols sympathized with the cause and joined the project selflessly."

The result is Metal Against Animal Cruelty, a diverse metal album with twenty magnificent singers and musicians supporting the good cause on eleven tracks! Listen to the first single feat. Björn "Speed" Strid (Soilwork, The Nightflight Orchestra) below.

Hugo Markaida about the song:

"This track is a tribute to one of my favorite artists like Björn Strid and David Andersson (recently passed away, may he rest in peace) from my favorite band Soilwork. Björn was the first artist I contacted and he agreed to collaborate in the project. The lyrics have some reference to Soilwork, legacy of David Andersson in the last stage of the band and Björn, main composers of the band, but it has a deeper and more personal meaning, as well as the dream of touring with Soilwork in Japan. The drums in this song are played by Lawrence Dinamarca, a Chilean/Swedish musician of an amazing level that I met while touring with his ex-band Nightrage. The guitar solo is by Pedro J Monge (Vhäldemar, Chromaticity Studios) and bass by Iñigo Lopez (The Descent)."

The album was produced, recorded and mastered at Chromaticity Studios by Pedro J Monge. Music and lyrics by*Hugo Markaida (Except Anxiety Lyrics and music by Iñigo Lopez and music in Fear & Guilt by Iñigo & Hugo and Lyrics by Hugo). "Metal Against Animal Cruelty" will be coming out on December 2nd and is now available for pre-order HERE

NECRONOMICON Announces Run of Canadian Shows

11/19: Trois Rivieres, QC @ L entite [TICKETS]

Montreal’s premier blackened death metallers are back with 'UNUS', the crushing and cinematic follow up to 2016’s 'Advent of the Human God'. With each record NECRONOMICON has created in the span of their 31-year career, the band has steadily evolved in both sound and power; 'UNUS' is no exception to this.

Inspired by H.P. Lovecraft’s legendary grimoire, NECRONOMICON formed in 1988 by founding guitarist and singer Rob "The Witch" in the deep, northern part of Canadian province Quebec, Fjord of Saguenay. Since then, the band have carefully released each full-length without haste, allowing them to perfect every nuance before unleashing their sonic assaults upon the masses. In 2019, NECRONOMICON was presented with a certificate of honor for over 30 years of service via H.S. production/Tommy Tremblay, and the people of Saguenay Lac St Jean, making them the second band after VOIVOD to ever receive this honor.

'UNUS' is a searing cacophony of blistering riffs, machine-like drums, and a symphonic ambience, culminating in a sound that calls to various metal icons such as DIMMU BORGIR, SEPTICFLESH, BEHEMOTH, and DEICIDE. The record combines the furious elements of death metal with the orchestral prowess of black metal, creating the perfect synthesis of both genres. Standout tracks like “Paradise Lost” and “Singularis Dominus” only solidify NECRONOMICON’s ability to continuously produce high quality metal that’s just as dark and brutal as it is elegant.

UK indie rock stalwarts Vernons Future to release 'Aquaplaning' LP. Preview the lead track 'Call To Arms

"A perfect collision of pop and rock, the band conveys beguiling charm, groove and melody, along with accessible sonics... a rock anthem that will get your blood flowing and delight your ear buds" ~ Amplify Music Magazine

aquaplane /ˈakwəpleɪn / verb / gerund or present participle: aquaplaning / (of a vehicle) slide uncontrollably on a wet surface.

UK indie rock veterans Vernons Future will be releasing their new album 'Aquaplaning' in early October, using the lead-time wisely by previewing lead track 'Call To Arms'. Perhaps their most overtly (small ‘p’) political song, it's also a plea to save the planet.

"It’s a challenge to all of us to open our eyes to the climate emergency, to join together to drive meaningful change to save the planet," says frontman Simon Burchill.

Formed in Liverpool in the 1980s and originally known as The Vernons, the band toured the UK and also released the album 'Smithdown Road’ in 1990 via the Probe Plus label, touted by Melody Maker as “a fine debut...in love with pop at its most unassuming and most charming”.

In 2015, the band reincarnated as Vernons Future with original members Simon Burchill, Andy Harding, Jon Fiber and Tom Le Bas, joined by Simon’s school friend Simon ‘Hoops’ Hooper.

Effectively their second album, 'Aquaplaning’ is essentially a compilation of the band’s singles from late 2019 onward, plus two new songs. Now split between Oxford and London, the band's music puts a distinctive twist on the poppier end of the indie spectrum.

As part of their ongoing quest to write the perfect 3-minute indie pop song, Vernons Future uses their classic vox/ guitar/ keys/ bass/ drums setup to hone accessible earworm indie tunes with a particular sense of humour and good hooks.

“When we started playing together again in 2015, we weren't sure if we would get to play gigs or release any music, so the last seven years have been a majorly fun surprise! We absolutely love playing live, and are lucky enough to be playing more gigs now. It's quite amazing to be able to release our songs too. When we first played together back in the 80's, streaming (and the internet!) wasn't a thing. Our first album came out on vinyl and cassette, but was too early for CDs. So we’re buzzing to release our new album on CD," says Andy Harding.

As of September 14, 'Call To Arms' is available via Bandcamp, where the full 'Aquaplaning' LP can already be pre-ordered on CD or as a digital download. The full 'Aquaplaning' album will be released on October 7. The band will also be playing a handful of concerts in September and October to celebrate the album's release.

UK indie rock artist BLACK MARKET KARMA releases ambitious tenth album ‘Aped Flair & Hijacked Ideas'

"Emotive, tender and nostalgic...It's an intriguing and evocative release that effortlessly demonstrates Stan Belton's spectacular composing skills" ~ Clash Magazine

"A trip you don't want to miss out on... there is nothing ‘extra’ here that is not needed, that doesn’t serve to create a better, more addictive song. This album is bravely and perfectly executed" ~ The Spill Magazine

"Impressive and singular, yet filled with easy and accessible appeal... making music without following fad or fashion or the need to satisfy public expectation" ~ The Record Stache

"With musical influences including numerous genres, their psychedelic vision goes well beyond the influential underpinnings of 60s rock, presenting a kaleidoscopic array of sonic threads woven together into the fabulous tapestry" ~ Amplify Music Magazine

UK-based artist Black Market Karma presents their tenth full-length album ‘Aped Flair & Hijacked Ideas', released via London boutique label Flower Power Records.

Hailing from London and now residing on the South coast of England, the band are back with a colourful carousel of jingle jangle and distorted wobble, following up the 2021 long-player 'The Technicolour Liquid Audio Machine', a lo-fi instrumental, nostalgic, beat driven opus concocted during the 2020 lockdown.

Beautifully foreshadowed by the singles 'Dead Trajectory' and 'In My Child Mind (E to A)', a groovy laid-back single with accompanying created by film director Louisa Pili and edited by BMK mastermind Stanley Belton, following him through a blissful trip around the magical realm of Tokyo.

'Aped Flair & Hijacked Ideas' is a loaded 11-track offering with a fluid texture of beach-soaked instrumentation. Themes range from observations of the sycophantic circles that leach from the arts, desperately trying to stay spiritually close to a geographically distant love, Japanese folklore and the deep connection between man and beast.

“I like to think of the sound of this record as Aquatica. It's like a psychedelic carousel of syrupy melody and liquid audio. Fat, baggy, saturated bass and drums, shimmering jangly guitars, wobbling fuzz, drunken keyboards and telephonic vocals. Imagine something along the lines of The Velvet Underground and The Troggs making tunes together but underwater, performing on marine life instead of instruments and routing the whole thing through a UFO," says Stanley Belton.

"The album's title is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the idea that nothing is truly original. Influence is an infinite web connecting all art and I think that's a beautiful thing that should be embraced. I often see people getting too hung up on the pursuit of some kind of idea of total originality that doesn't exist. It's all in the blend.”

With broader flavours of psychedelia, fuzzed out tones and thumping grooves, Black Market Karma's thick and colourful sound is shaped by the use of a lot of vintage equipment. Rooted in 60's guitar and pop music, other influences range from folk and blues through to lo-fi electronica, traditional Indian music, shoegaze, hip hop, soul and Motown.

To date, the band has released nine albums, eight of which were released between 2012 and 2016 and entirely written, performed, recorded and produced by multi-instrumentalist Stanley Belton while living in London at the band's own 'Cocoon' studio. On the new album, Stan broke his tendency to do everything himself by co-writing and performing two tracks on the album ('Kong' and 'A Crying Shame') together with his brother Finley Belton.

More recently, Stan has been working on collaborations with Pete Kember (a.k.a. Sonic Boom) of Spacemen 3, Joakim Ahlund of Cesars & Les Big Byrd, Tess Parks and The Underground Youth.

As of September 29, 'Aped Flair & Hijacked Ideas' will be available everywhere digitally, including Apple Music, Spotify and Bandcamp. The The double album, pressed on 180-gram coloured vinyl with a gatefold sleeve, can also be ordered athttps://bit.ly/3QNCBjE. For additional feel-good factor, Act Cool Records also released a live session with Stanley Belton.

Archspire’s 2017 Relentless Mutation was a cavalcade of speed and extremity — blasting, accelerating and, in partial reference to its title, “mutating” as each song unfolded, all the while rapid-fire, shotgun vocals blurred the lines between a man’s throat and additional instrument. It was, unquestionably, an innovation of sound and technique — Archspire had broken the speed barrier while creating songs memorable as they were unabashedly extreme for extreme metal. Thus, the pressure was already there to top Relentless Mutation when the band started to compile new songs in 2018. The global pandemic heightened the situation (read: no touring, expanded free time) and caused Archspire to turn inward and apply additional rigor to their songwriting process, albeit painstakingly so. But by the end of the fraught calendar year that was 2020, the band emerged with their fourth studio album, Bleed the Future.

According to the members of Archspire — vocalist Oli Aleron, guitarists Dean Lamb and Tobi Morelli, bassist Jared Smith and drummer Spencer Prewett — they originally went into the making of Bleed the Future under the idea they would finish the album in between the various tours scheduled for 2020. Of course, none of that happened, prompting the band to do more pre-production than at any time in their career. Archspire then subjected the album’s eight songs to near-constant critiquing that ensured they came away with a product, that in their estimation, is their best to date.

“The benefit we had was that Relentless came out in 2017,” says Lamb. “Since then, we toured more than we ever did before. We had the viewpoint of ‘What do crowds like? What parts should we write more of? What parts do people give us good feedback on?’ We wanted to expand and write those parts more consistently — there are more hooks and when we do have hooks, we wanted to repeat those parts so people will know that this is the catchy part of the song.”

“The most important thing was that we had clever songwriting,” adds Prewett. “We wanted the album to be more accessible to more people but still keep it extreme, fast and technical. So, we changed our process this time. We recorded rehearsal every day and listened to what we did afterward. We’d then come back to the jam spot and change riffs and ideas based on what everyone was thinking about during the week. It resulted in an album that everyone was happier with.”

Archspire also had the stated goal for Bleed the Future that they wanted to get faster. While such a feat may defy reason given their previous output, the band wrote their fastest song to date — the album-closing “AUM,” a cut that opens up with an audio recording of a German friend of Prewett’s who, according to the drummer, enjoys ragging on Archspire. Comedic clips aside, “AUM,” caps off an album that pushes the boundaries of speed but also is textured — Smith’s ethereal basslines often serve as mid-song interludes, while Lamb and Morelli weave melodic, spiraling guitar lines that annihilate the fretboard during “Abandon the Linear,” “Bleed the Future” and “Acrid Canon.” Accordingly, the members of Archspire were keenly aware of the expectations placed upon them after the success of Relentless Mutation. The online comments regarding whether they could top Relentless Mutation was also occasionally on their minds when composing Bleed the Future and prompted the band to ensure that all five members were happy with everything — down to the last riff, vocal line, bass run and drum pattern. “Audience expectation is really important,” says Lamb. “If we leave the jam spot and everyone is stoked on a song, it’s pretty likely that the audience will be stoked. We have the expectation of the audience, but we also have to be pumped on the music. I feel the proudest of the music. We spent more time on the songs and got better at writing. I feel it’s better music.”

“It’s an extremely tedious writing process,” adds Smith. “If anyone isn’t feeling a riff, we scrap it and have to find something we’re all happy with. It can be super-frustrating in the moment, but in the end, we have something better. We want everything we write to be a step up and I think we achieved that with Bleed the Future.”

The album is accompanied by a concept developed by Aleron that begs the question: What happens when humans start giving birth to non-humans? Born from a weird dream the vocalist had, Bleed the Future’s concept does not have finality or a conclusion. It does, however, posit a few ethical dilemmas to ties into Archspire’s long-running science fiction themes.

“I thought about what if those things they were giving birth to could actually benefit them in the future so they wouldn’t want to reject them,” says Aleron. “What would happen to the humans that weren’t born? Would they go to a different dimension? I played with that whole idea because I hadn’t seen a horror movie where that was the theme. It worked for all the songs. The only social commentary is that people don’t know what they’re giving birth to — if you put someone on this planet, you don’t know whether they’re going to be good or evil.”

Bleed the Future was recorded in October and November 2020 at Flatline Audio in Colorado with producer/engineer Dave Otero. This was the second consecutive album the band worked with Otero. According to Morelli, the recording process was seamless. “Dave was already familiar with what we each can do individually,” he says. “This time, he was more prepared to tackle those elements. How he tracks was more focused on what we were capable of and I think it really shows here.”

As live show activity for 2021 hangs in the balance (Archspire currently has dates lined up for November), the pandemic has prompted many bands to re-think their new album release dates as well as how to stay visible in a world currently without touring. But, with a fanbase that has embraced the band’s online presence that includes playthroughs, tutorials and now, cooking shows (!), Archspire heads into the Bleed the Future album cycle the benefactors of their commitment to touring and, most of all, position as one of death metal’s most forward-thinking bands.

“We have a lot of awesome fans, so I think they’ll be there to support us and pick up the album because they like the music,” says Lamb. “We’re a self-managed band; we’ve been working with the same label for ten years and I think the outcome will be good. Would it had been better if we had been on a full North American tour starting a week before the album release? Sure, but I think people will come out and support us through other means. As soon as we’re ready to go back on tour and everybody is safe to do so, we’ll be out there.”

European Tour Dates with INSOMNIUM, WOLFHEART, BORKNAGAR & HINAYANA Kicking Off this Week

Portuguese dark metal maestros MOONSPELL are not only currently gearing up for their upcoming, extensive “Ultima Ratio Fest” tour – kicking off this week – but aptly, they will also release their very special, new BluRay/DVD/Album, entitled From Down Below – Live 80 Meters Deep, this Friday, on September 30 via Napalm Records.

With From Down Below – Live 80 Meters Deep, the band presents their latest; 2021-studio album, Hermitage, live and recorded 80 meters below the earth, at the heart of one of Portugal’s seven natural wonders, the Grutas de Mira D'Aire! The recording boasts a one-of-a-kind sound and visual sensation with its heavy dose of cinematic flavor, unreal atmosphere and the encircling, resounding nature in its raw form, while showcasing MOONSPELL’s much acclaimed album Hermitage at its primal best, live from inside one of the most impressive caves in Europe.

Previously, the dark and gothic metal pioneers have already shared live music videos for "Entitlement" and the breathtaking album title track. Today, the final and third album single has dropped - a haunting clip for "Apophthegmata", in which crystal clear piano, razor-sharp riffage and Fernando Ribeiro’s haunting voice persuades in otherworldly resonance with its unique sound and visual sensation.

Says the charismatic frontman:

"Apophthegmata is a Greek word that defines a collection of texts, a book with the most important lessons and revelations of the Desert Fathers, the kings of Hermits. They stood in the darkness to enlighten themselves and often brought their conclusions of peace and wisdom to their restless and suffering communities. This sing stands for exactly that, musically speaking: a game of light and shadow, a bridge between fragility and strength. It quickly became a must on our setlist and a fan favourite of the Hermitage album. Enjoy the light, learn with the darkness, be kind to yourself so you can be kind to others."

TEETH SIGN TO NUCLEAR BLAST RECORDS + ANNOUNCE EXCLUSIVE 575 EP OUT ON OCTOBER 28TH!

Highly influenced by discomfort, there can be no compromise in the structure of what Ontario, Canada hardcore/metal quartet TEETH are producing because what flows from them is purely honest, and quite unlike anything that has been heard before.

Their adherence to this artistic integrity is a huge part of what caught the eye of heavy metal foundry, Nuclear Blast Records. Recently signed to the label, this new union stands only to further amplify into the new year.

In celebration of the signing, the band is offering fans their 575 EP which contains four already released songs. The EP will be available as a clear cassette on October 28th.

The band comments, "TEETH has always been - and always will be - a passion project for us. A visceral creative outlet not to be marred by outside influence or external pressure to achieve anything but creating music that we enjoy. We promised ourselves that if the opportunity to work with a label ever arose, they’d have to share our artistic vision, and ultimately want to help TEETH connect with everyone who’d listen.

"When we began talking to Nuclear Blast at the beginning of the pandemic, it became immediately apparent they checked those boxes. Growing up listening to bands like HATEBREED, MINISTRY, and SLAYER and eventually discovering artists like NAILS, it felt like Nuclear Blast understood everything TEETH stands for, and aspires to be.

"So, with that said, we’re excited to finally announce that we are now part of the Nuclear Blast family. We’re just getting started."

Vocalist Blake Prince commented on the signing: "We are extremely thrilled to finally announce that we've signed a deal with Nuclear Blast Records. This has been something we’ve had to keep close to our chest throughout the pandemic and we’re eager to get to work. To be a part of this legendary roster is an honor and a perfect home for TEETH.Ideally, your label is a partner. Human beings with a strong passion for growing artistic culture and individuality, who believe in you and are working hard to help facilitate our vision. We feel confident that the cooperation with Nuclear Blast will help bring this band to the next level."

Listen and pre-order your 575 exclusive EP here: http://nblast.de/Teeth-575EP

Pre-order your copy of TEETH's 575 EP here: thttp://nblast.de/Teeth-575EP

The 575 EP was produced and engineered by Davis Maxwell & TEETH at Bell Tower Studios in September 2019. The cover artwork was created by Orupting (Madison Roger).

TEETH are of the philosophy that every subsequent part of the song needs to be more disgusting, uncomfortable, and nasty than the part before it. “It’s supposed to feel frantic; super visceral and aggressive,” explains Prince.Pain is an adhesive, and in a time where there’s a lot of pent up emotion towards friends, family, everything around us... it gives people a nice vehicle to air their grievances.”

Only a couple of things remain to be seen with TEETH: when will their new album drop, and what bands can you look forward to seeing them grace the stage with? Keep your eyes on Nuclear Blast Records and TEETH socials for updates.

Norwegian Black Metallers Kampfar Release New Single "Rekviem"

What if I told you that I was about to sing you a song? And that this song needed time.

What if I told you that this year is my story, and that we will travel through it together, one step at a time?

What if I, at the year's beginning, told you that we have a new album for you, and that you wouldn't be able to hear its end before the year nears its final stage?

We could have done that, though transparency was never our thing.

The story of 'Til Klovers Takt' is a window into our world. Our present but also our history, in the way that everything you are today, is the sum of all that was before.

This album is all that Kampfar ever was, condensed into six distinct pieces of music. The songs collect inspiration from the same places that helped shape albums like 'Mellom Skogkledde Aaser', 'Kvassand Mare'.

The music we're inspired by changes but also stays the same, the surroundings that inspire our creations are the same but also evolve with time. The men that make the music grow and mature, both as men and as musicians, thought their roots stay the same.

We decided to do things a bit differently this time. This is the way we wanted to tell this story. It's an ode to an area, a hymn to the collective musical mind, a tale of a quarter century's worth of inspiration.

CELESTE Release New Music Video For "(A)"

French underground avant-gardists CELESTE have released a new music video for their song "(A)", taken from their sixth studio album Assassine(s), released back in January of this year. The striking video expresses the essence of the song, both visually and emotionally, adding another level of depth to the already charged piece.

'(A)' is CELESTE’s most experimental track to date, launching with drony synths written by frontman Johan. With a post-rock edge, this slow-burn instrumental song has a soundtrack-like quality. The cinematic ambiance is emphasized by the two lead guitars, intertwined like two characters in a somber story, enrichened by a guest appearance from Katsuta of HEAVEN IN HER ARMS.

Johan Girardeau comments on the new video:
We're really glad to complete the triptych of videos that we started a year ago with 'Des Torrents de Coups' and 'Le Coeur Noir Charbon'. This video clip means a lot to us. We've been showcasing it live during the Assassine(s) release tour and we are looking forward to unleashing it online. This piece of artwork reflects our long-built aesthetics. As a song, '(A)' became a very important song to us as well, showing our will to widen our musical influences, with these shoegazy, post-rockish hints which are definitely new ground for CELESTE.

Sound Pollution Update! New Music Out Today from Finnegan's Hell!

Finnegan's Hell Release

New Single & Video for "Mickey Finn"

New Full-Length Album to be Released November 25th!

The runaway train Finnegan's Hell is accelerating!

Single number two from the upcoming album, 'One Finger Salute', is an ultra-fast pogo pleaser called "Mickey Finn"; a tale about being slipped something in your drink and dealing with the consequences.

The song is based on a true story, and the video - released simultaneously - is not suitable for sensitive viewers.

Watch the Official Music Video for "Mickey Finn"

The long-awaited new album 'One Finger Salute' by Finnegan's Hell, will be released November 25th.

Its title track appeared as a single a few weeks ago and received rave reviews all over Europe as well as in the US and Canada. Influential London Celtic Punks wrote "we’re happy to report they have all the same swagger, intensity and attitude as before" and concludes "this is evidence someone will have to set a new place at the Celtic-Punk top table!".

Back home in Sweden, Finnegan's Hell is often called "The Swedish Pogues" by the press. Even though the band has cranked up the volume and significantly increased the tempo, "Mickey Finn" is a well-crafted song with the same kind of infectious melody and straightforward lyrics that was the trademark of Mr. MacGowan and his men.

The video for "Mickey Finn" was directed by Michael Ek, and this time he has gone all in. Sensitive viewers be aware!

HEXED – The Swedish Symphonic Progressive Metal band is back with their second album 'Pagans Rising'.

Along with the powerful lead vocals of Tina Gunnarsson, this theme album has great songwriting mixed with strong choruses and guttural growl.

Written with inspiration by the history of Sweden’s witch-hunting hysteria in the late 17th century, 'Pagan's Rising' is a perfect blend of spellbinding guitar melodies, chugging riffs, dark symphonic orchestrations and progressive elements.

Behind the unique sound of this masterpiece is the talented mixing/mastering engineer Ronnie Björnström (Sorcerer, Aeon etc.)

'Pagan's Rising' is a much heavier, darker version of HEXED.

Elle King Releases Featured Track "I Know Where I've Been" to Lead Countdown to Netflix Film "Luckiest Girl Alive

ELLE KING RELEASES FEATURED TRACK “I KNOW WHERE I’VE BEEN”
TO LEAD COUNTDOWN TO NETFLIX FILM LUCKIEST GIRL ALIVE

Netflix Film Based On New York Times Best Selling Novel Available Oct. 7

Singer-songwriter Elle King brings her searing vocal to “I Know Where I’ve Been,” a featured song in the forthcoming Netflix film Luckiest Girl Alive. The song, available today, is the only original song on the soundtrack which was produced by Hall Of Fame Songwriter Linda Perry. Written by Perry, the powerful song of freedom and release plays during the final credits of the film.

“I was instantly drawn to this song when I heard it,” said King. “Linda was one of the first people in this industry to see something in me when I was 19 years old. I look up to her so much and she’s carved a path for so many artists like me. She makes powerful music and it’s pretty dang cool she lets me be a part of it.”

Luckiest Girl Alive is a mystery drama based on the 2015 New York Times bestselling novel by Jessica Knoll and stars Mila Kunis, Connie Britton, Justine Lupe, Chiara Aurelia, Jennifer Beals, Finn Wittrock, Scoot McNairy, Thomas Barbusca, Carson MacCormac, Dalmar Abuzeid, and Alex Barone.

King and Perry have collaborated in the past, most recently in the Golden Globe Nominated film Dumplin. Perry produced that soundtrack which features a duet with Dolly Parton and King on the track “Holdin’ On To You.”

King is currently climbing the country charts with her new single “Worth A Shot,” featuring her friend and Grammy nominated artist Dierks Bentley. She continues touring this fall with Chris Stapleton as part of his All American Roadshow Tour.

About Elle King:
Multi-platinum, award-winning recording artist Elle King has enjoyed nearly 1.7 billion streams worldwide. King spent the better part of 2021 supporting her #1 hit “Drunk (And I Don’t Wanna Go Home) with Miranda Lambert, which has amassed over 275 million on-demand streams worldwide, and hit #1 on both Billboard’s Rock Digital Sales Chart and Country Digital Sales Chart upon release. The track not only garnered a nomination for Musical Event of the Year at the 2021 CMA Awards, but earned King her fourth Grammy nomination (Best Country Duo/Group Performance). Additionally, the track marked King as the first female artist in history to have scored four radio No. 1 singles on different formats including Adult Pop Songs, Adult Alternative Songs, Alternative Songs and Country Airplay charts.

Her debut album Love Stuff featured her breakthrough single “Ex’s & Oh’s,” which earned her two GRAMMY nominations and is certified 4x times platinum. The breakthrough single hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Rock Songs Chart, topped the AAA, Hot AC, and Alternative Radio charts, leading King to become the second female artist in 18 years to reach No. 1 at the latter format. Her single “Shame,” featured on her second studio album Shake The Spirit marked King’s fourth radio #1 single.

Fred Abong releases 'Yellowthroat' album featuring Rob Ahlers (50FOOTWAVE, Kristin Hersh Trio)

This is Abong's sixth album, having self-released five on his own, as well as two EPs. Abong’s music has been described as a cross between “ragged Replacements and lyric-driven Bob Dylan,” and as “Elliott Smith with balls”.

Shortly ahead of this, Abong presented the song 'Passenger Side' along with a self-produced video, following earlier singles 'Twister' and 'Aurora', released ahead of his recent UK and US tours, where he supported Kristin Hersh.

Fred Abong is a Filipino-American artist, whose music represents an endearing mix of indie-alternative rock and folk singer-songwriter. His work is characterized by existential and romantically focused poetic lyrics, a hypnotic, sometimes gravelly, baritone voice, off-kilter and down-tuned guitars and unconventional song structures. He has a raw and unpolished production aesthetic with an overall direct, though deceptively imaginative and oblique, presentation.

“When I wrote 'Yellowthroat', I was (and still am, honestly) in a very romantic way. Of course, love and romance are impossible to straightforwardly convey, but I chose the straightforwardly romantic classical guitar as the primary instrument for the record, nonetheless. I grew up hearing my older siblings playing it around the house, and at an early age fell in love with its inherent drama and melancholy. I also learned to play the classical guitar (in my own way) but never felt compelled to write or record with it until now. I guess I had to wait until I was truly in love to feel I could approach it properly," says Fred Abong.

"Aside from attempting to capture the subtleties of new love, I also knew that I wanted 'Yellowthroat' to be more than just a collection of songs in the tradition of Leonard Cohen et. al. This is why I asked my pal Rob Ahlers (50 Foot Wave, KH Trio), a master drummer and all-around musical savant, if he would lend both his song-oriented ear and his multi-talented musical touch to the record. After I wrote all the songs and recorded the guitar and vocals at home between Dec 2020 and March 2021, Rob got busy, adding his parts and shaping the general direction of the production in fits and starts over the next year. The result is my version of an old fashioned crooner record (‘In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning’ was on heavy rotation during the writing phase, hence the cover). It’s a tribute to heartache and romance, existentially framed, colored with punk rock edginess, and filtered through a difficult-to-place, vapor-wave production.”

Until returning to music full-time, Abong spent nearly a decade immersed in academia, completing a Ph.D. in Humanities and working as an adjunct professor in the Religious Studies, Philosophy, and English Departments at various universities. 'Yellowthroat' is out now, available on CD and 12-inch 160-gram black vinyl, as well as digitally via Bandcamp, where the record is available in all formats.

SELECT PRESS FEEDBACK
“There is a purity and honesty in his approach that gets more and more intense with each track. It feels like you’re riding a wave of energy” ~ Higher Plain Music

“Thoughtful, minimalist, sometimes even bleak, but all the better for it. The ghost of Syd Barrett watches over everything... ‘Yellowthroat’ takes another sonic leap forward” ~ Real Gone Rocks

“An almost painful intimacy to his words despite the oblique phrasing and imagery he conjures” ~ Isolation Records

“An ascent out of singer-songwriter folk territory into something bordering on punk and psychedelia” ~ Fatea Magazine

“Beautifully raw, uncluttered and quite cinematic, these songs could easily serve as the soundtrack to a Jim Jarmusch film. Melodically infectious and lyrically mysterious, they beckon the listener back to experience them over and over again” ~ Newport Naked
