Alt Rock Band AEIR Release Official Lyric Video for Single "SMOKE ‘EM IF YOU GOT ‘EM"

Columbus, Ohio, Alt Rock band, AEIR, have signed on to Stephen Perkins' (Janes Addiction) label Perkins Palace Records. The band released their official lyric video for single "SMOKE ‘EM IF YOU GOT ‘EM" today!

"I spent 18 months looking for the right band. The first time I heard the band I wanted to know their story and let the world hear their story and their music. I am excited to tell the world about the band" says Stephen Perkins.

“We wrote 'Smoke ‘Em If You Got ‘Em' during the midst of the pandemic. The song is a take on the smoking guns of American politics; big pharma, the oil industries and big corporations, as well as the collective feeling of defeat experienced by a majority of Americans at the time. We shot the video with Paul Cunningham at the Ohio HD location, tracked it with Jacob Mooney and had it mastered with Mazen Murrat. All with the intent of capturing the angst of the climate at the time and also the raw energy of our live set. We are all super happy with its outcome,” says the band.

AEIR is made up of three local Columbus, Ohio, bands; Coya Hill, The Turbos and Personal Public . Before COVID-19 hit, the drummer and singer of The Turbos toured 160 self-booked shows in 2019. When the pandemic hit, The Turbos and friends Coya Hill and Personal Public came to an end, but the bands were still able to connect and form something great together. Even with the world facing so much uncertainty regarding the global outbreak, the newly formed group did not sit idly by but instead got straight to work. During the major lock-downs across the world the band wrote over 40+ songs. Out of the many songs they wrote, they decided on 8 of their favorites for an upcoming release in the future. Their new single "Smoke 'Em If You Got 'Em" was tracked and mixed by Jakob Mooney and mastered by Mazen Murratat Katara Studios.

When talking about his label Stephen Perkins says, "Why now? I think with all my experience and hunger to help bands and artists grow, it is a perfect time to cross the bridge to plant the seeds for new artists. I am a label for artists! Artist first!"

The band is in the process of booking live shows in 2022.

Dead Posey Release New Music Video "sorry i'm not dead"

Los Angeles-based rock duo Dead Posey have today released their latest music video for their track "sorry i'm not dead". Prior to today's release, the band dropped their catchy single "Russian Roulette" which has amassed nearly 165,000 streams and counting on Spotify alone. Speaking on today's release, the band shares:

"sorry i’m not dead is declaring war against the patriarchy. It’s cutting down the things that say you’re only pretty if you look like this or dress like that. Expecting women to have perfect hair, perfect nails, a perfect face, and body. It’s pushing against the systems in place that call Dead Posey a “female” fronted rock band. No one ever says “male” fronted rock band - it’s just a fucking rock band. This song is about breaking out of the little box that a society based on traditional gender roles has placed around women for ages."

British avant pop artist Nick Hudson, presents his new single 'The Florist' from his new 8-track 'K69996ROMA:EP'. Co-written with Kianna Blue (The Academy of Sun), this song proposes a kind of metaphysical tabula rasa as the protagonist self-immolates in a flower shop, and then ascends. Hudson is on synths, programming, piano and vocals and Kianna Blue on synths. Created and edited by Kianna Blue, the accompanying video was shot by Nick Hudson and Oliver Hill.

"Written as an optimist ode to self-immolation, 'The Florist' germinated from a chordal kernel Kianna Blue liberated on the beautiful grand piano of St Mary’s church in Brighton during the vocal sessions for the 'Font Of Human Fractures' LP. I watered it daily and added lyrics about a human animal burning down a flower shop in the hope that he might fuse with the beautiful mélange within, thusly finding peace. It bloomed into glorious technicolor with the layering of many synths - our Artaudian post-pop song," says Nick Hudson.

A prolific figure on the UK music scene, Hudson is perhaps best known as frontman of The Academy of Sun, who released their dystopian epic 'The Quiet Earth' last year to critical acclaim, Nick's vast output also encompasses painting, film, and a recently-completed novel. Hudson has also collaborated with Wayne Hussey (The Mission) and Matthew Seligman (Bowie, Tori Amos, Morrissey), members of Kayo Dot, David Tibet (Current 93), Asva, queercore icon GB Jones, as well as Massive Attack's Shara Nelson. Having toured 3 continents, highlights include appearances with Mogwai, Toby Driver and Keith Abrams (Kayo Dot), and Timba Harris (Mr Bungle, Amanda Palmer).

Not long ago, Hudson released a video for the lead track 'The Ballad Of K69996 Roma', which transposes a conscience upon the slick Alfa Romeo car that was owned by and weaponised in the 1975 murder of queer Marxist filmmaker, poet and essayist Pier Paolo Pasolini. The astonishing video was created by filmmaker Adrian Goycoolea.

Earlier this year, Hudson released the 'Font Of Human Fractures' album, his first long-player in five years and his first solo studio LP since 'Ganymede In A State Of War' (2016).

"Each song has its own story, and some have longer gestation periods than others. 'The Florist' came together with a certain deterministic inevitability. The first seed was sown whilst Nick and I were visiting St Mary's Church in Brighton in preparation for what is one of the more ambitious live events in The Academy of Sun's lifetime - the grandiose unveiling of The Quiet Earth's symphonic and eschatological new sound. We were graciously allowed access to the Bosendorfer piano for the performance," explains Kianna Blue.

"Fast forward a couple of years and everyone is in prison. Well, Lockdown, anyway. Everyone is going slightly insane and I'm trying to utilise this much needed moment of psychological deprogramming to write some songs. I find the aforementioned recording and send it off to Nick as a curio of "the times that were", Nick has not lost his fondness for the piece and we set about remotely trying to expand upon it. Nick writes some vocals and an acid-fried "chorus"; I write that Blade Runner-esque lead synth line and suddenly we're cooking."

'K69996ROMA:EP' is out now, both digitally and as a hyper-limited edition 4-panel CD digipak of 50 copies, 25 of which are presented in an ACAB-silkscreened metallic gold envelope, with a bonus track in the form of a score booklet, printed on Nepalese floral paper and featuring an original miniature artwork by Nick Hudson. Brooklyn-based underground music veterans Jarvis Earnshaw and Trevor Dunnare gearing up to release their first collaborative album as the TRAVIS DUO - a collection of improvisations based on a set of line drawings and diagrams drawn during lucid dreams. Aptly titled 'Hypnagogia' (\.hip-næ-‘gä-jia. of or pertaining to the period of the transitional state between waking life and dreams: hypnagogic hallucinations).

For this project, multi-instrumentalist Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle, Fantômas, John Zorn, The Melvins, Diatom Ribbons, Trio Convulsant, Endangered Blood) plays contrabass and percussion, while Jarvis Earnshaw (SYRINX-Series, Question, Harbinger, the Luke Stewart and Jarvis Earnshaw Quartet) contributes sitar, tapeloops and vocals. Together they mesh and warp jazz into a novel and unique experimental sitar-laden creature.

Ahead of this, the TRAVIS DUO presents 'Hitherto' featuring Daniel Carter, a renowned jazz veteran of the NYC underground jazz scene, who has played wth many notable artists, including Yoko Ono, Sonic Youth, Jaco Pastorius, Yo La Tengo, William Parker, Cecil Taylor and Sun Ra.

Recorded and mixed by legendary producer Martin Bisi (Sonic Youth, Herbie Hancock, Afrika Bambaataa, DNA, White Zombie, Ginger Baker, John Zorn) at his BC Studio in Gowanus, Brooklyn, this album was mastered by Josh Bonati(William S. Burroughs, Zola Jesus, Beaks>, Mort Garson 'Plantasia', Slowdive, Jenny Hval).

'Hypnagogia' is bold and honest, weaving a tapestry of colours and pushing abstractions. They present an impressive hybrid of styles, whilst gently nestling on their pop roots. The kaleidoscopic overtones of the sitar dance elegantly with the charismatic and eloquent contrabass. This is psychedelic ethnic-flavoured jazz with a mean right hook.

The duo is joined on this album by several well-achieved musicians, including saxophonist Devin Brahja Waldman (Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Thurston Moore, Notable Deaths) and drummer Niko Wood {Shake The Baby Til The Love Comes Out}. Also, Daniel Carter (Yoko Ono, Jaco Pastorius, Yo La Tengo, Sun Ra) plays saxophone and flute, while Sean McCaul (Philip Glass Ensemble 'Naqoyqatsi') plays xylophone.

"This album is a meeting of minds that cross generations, timelines and genres, as if ancestral cheerleaders were egging us on. The personnel age gap on this record spans 50 years, the youngest being in his 20s to the oldest in his 70s. Every member is a highly distinguished unique musician in their own right and at the top of their field, creating gorgeous music in every genre, pulling inspiration from our vast experiences of life - from Abstract Noise, Punk, Jazz, Rock, Hiphop to Chamber music and beyond. This has magically shaped this album, which extends beyond genre and is pure expression at its finest above and beyond boundaries," says Jarvis Earnshaw. 

"I grew up in backwoods bumblef*ck countryside Japan and would have never imagined that I would be playing music with my hero Trevor Dunn. I still remember the first time I heard his band Mr.Bungle smash open my head with the bottlecracking 'Travolta'. 13-year old me was obsessed with the band, which has really shaped the person I am today. Martin Bisi, the humble legend, has produced most of the music I listened to growing up, which can probably be said by a lot of people. In many ways, this is a dream-come-true album and I still keep pinching myself or perhaps this is all just a lucid dream."

London-born, Jarvis Earnshaw spent most of his childhood in Japan, releasing his debut album via Slam Records at the age of 15. Since graduating Bunka Gakuin Art School in Tokyo, he studied sitar in India, and is a graduate of Pratt Institute in New York. Both as a musician and visual artist, his work is recognized worldwide, having solo exhibitions, residencies and performances throughout the world, including Fuji Rock Festival, Europe, India and across America to New York's own Lincoln Center.

As of December 10, 'Hypnogogia' will be released as a limited edition of 500 albums on dark blue vinyl. The seven core tracks come with bonus track 'Lolloping Theta Broom Horse' and a16-page full-colour booklet. It can be pre-ordered directly from Earnshaw's own website or via Bandcamp.

Bliss My Heart and Wildstreet Vocalist Eric Jayk Release New Single "Drive Fast" + Official Music Video

Following the success of "Reason To Dust," (45k streams on Spotify) Bliss My Heart and Wildstreet vocalist Eric Jayk have released a new single, "Drive Fast" along with the official music video.

Influenced by Bauhaus and Sister Of Mercy, Bliss My Heart sent Eric Jayk an 8 year old demo of "Drive Fast” in July immediately following the release of "Reason To Dust". She was hoping the two could continue their collaboration in a rock, very loud way. Jayk added the main hook vocal/lyrics, Depeche Mode inspired rhythm guitars and the end solo. Working with producer Daniel Lima ( Brazil ) for the first time and mastered by Michael Fossenkemper, "Drive Fast"was completed in September. The music video was filmed by Philippe Jacob outside Paris in October 2021, shortly after Wildstreet’s tour in Europe. The cover artwork was created by Adam Carini.

This year, New York City’s Wildstreet released their highly acclaimed album III through Golden Robot Records. Recorded in NYC 2018/2019 III, was produced by Kyle Paas, mixed by Jon Kaplan (Paul McCartney, Jonas Brothers) and mastered by Howie Weinberg (Andrew Wk, Def Leppard, Korn).

Wildstreet III has reached 1.8 million streams on Spotify. Three of their singles have been mainstays to Spotify’s editorial playlist ‘Hard Rock’ & Apple Music ‘Breaking Hard Rock.’ In October they released a cover of the 69Eyes classic "Mrs. Sleazy" via Golden Robot Records. They just finished their second tour in Europe which included shows in France, Switzerland and Belgium, including Swiss Rock Cruise. To end the year they will tour the East Coast USA in November. Wildstreet has confirmed shows and festival dates in Mexico, South America, UK, and Europe next year and will begin working on a new full-length album.

Wildstreet began in 2006 and released their self- titled debut album on Retrospect Records in 2009. The band spent the next 4 years touring nonstop and performing at US festivals including Rocklahoma (5 consecutive years), SXSW and M3 Rock Festival.

Portuguese-Canadian-Swedish alternative neo-folk collective Lusitanian Ghostspresent 'Exotic Quixotic', their sophomore album, released via European Phonographic and featuring ancient Portuguese chordophones and other European string instruments. This is a brilliant taste of the sonic prism through which the Ghosts present ancient sounds in the 21st Century.

They also present a full-length video recording of their latest performance, filmed in the Portuguese town of Setabul.

Founded in 2015, Lusitanian Ghosts are Neil Leyton, Mikael Lundin (a.k.a. Micke Ghost), João Sousa, Omiri, O Gajo, Abel Beja, Janne Olson and other artists that come and go. Writing from a socio-political perspective about a better world, they create songs from and for the heart and mind. Their compositions mix indie songwriting with traditional Portuguese instruments like the Beiroa, Campaniça, Braguesa, Terceirense and Amarantina guitars (or violas as they are called in Portugal), each with its own string arrangements and tunings.

"This is the first record ever made that gathers these regional chordophones as the main protagonists, all on the same record. Whereas on the first Lusitanian Ghosts, we still used 6-string acoustic guitars and electric guitars, on this one we have abandoned them entirely in favour of just the chordophones leading this unique soundscape," says Neil Leyton.

"It’s a record about life, love and death, but not featuring your usual reflections on those topics. We have songs about murder (we are against it unless it’s a really bad guy), songs about euthanasia (in favour of), songs about love and commitment from afar, songs about how selfish people are, songs that will probably be misinsterpreted the way that, say 'Born in the USA' or 'A Design for Life' were. And also a song about a dog that passed away. As for the title track, it’s about being a creative, humanist human being, rather than destroying and doing harm to other people and this world."

This album, recorded on analogue tape and mixed by Sebastian Muxfeldt (Elbow, Peter Doherty, Teenage Fanclub) at Hamburg's Clouds Hills Studios, recasts heritage folk violas into rock and roll songs.

"For this second album, we headed to the amazing Clouds Hill studio in Hamburg, which features beautiful analogue gear, old instruments, a great space and it is a live-in studio with an artist apartment downstairs. Bands like Gallon Drunk, Faust, artists like Pete Doherty and Omar Rodrigues-Lopez from At the Drive in record there. We stayed for about 8 days, tracking bass, drums and Amarantina live off the floor and then overdubbing the other chordophones, vocals, some percussion and keys," recalls Neil Leyton.

Earlier, the band released the singles 'Never Less Than Lonely', 'Soul Deranium', 'All the Sounds' and the title track 'Exotic Quixotic'.

Their debut self-titled album, recorded at Portugal's Canoa Studios and produced by Ricardo Ferreira, mixed various regional Lusitanian (Portuguese) chordophones with the band's unique brand of pop-rock. The documentary 'Lusitanian Ghosts: Making Of the Lusitanian Ghosts debut album - Chordophone Rock n Roll' elucidates on why most of these Portuguese ancient instruments (the real Lusitanian Ghosts) have become forgotten over time. For this new album, they've done away with the guitars, using only chordophones, along with bass and drums. Even the snare was replaced on many tracks with the Adufe, a Portuguese square drum.

As of November 19, the 'Exotic Quixotic' LP will be available everywhere digitally, including Spotify, Apple Music, and directly from the aritist via Bandcamp.

Saint Asonia Cover The Weeknd's "Blinding Lights" — LISTEN

Hard rock band Saint Asonia, featuring former Three Days Grace frontman Adam Gontier and Staind guitarist/founding member Mike Mushok, have dropped a new song and it's totally unexpected yet makes complete sense. The band has shared its cover of The Weeknd's "Blinding Lights." Listen to Saint Asonia put their thoroughly unique spin on the hit song below.

It's like a mashup of both artist's sounds and it finds Saint Asonia fearlessly trying new things, while putting their distinct stamp on the track, making it their own.

"It's always interesting deciding on a song to cover," muses Gontier about how the band arrived at the decision to cover an R&B/pop artist. "In this case, I just wanted to do something that people wouldn't necessarily expect. I mean, any way you look at it, 'Blinding Lights' is a GREAT song. It was fun to give it our flavor, and add our style to it. Also, both we and The Weeknd are Canadian, specifically from the Toronto area, so that made it even sweeter. We're all pumped with how it turned out. It hits hard."

Saint Asonia, who released their sophomore effort Flawed Design on Spinefarm Records in 2019, continue to work on new music, set to arrive in 2022.

THE THREE TREMORS have released their 3rd and final video for their new album GUARDIANS OF THE VOID for the song WAR OF NATIONS.

This song is a tale of the famous Battle of the Bulge which would be the final decisive battle in World War 2 leading to the eventual Allied victory.

Tim said “Every good metal album needs a song like this I think. It has a great hook in the chorus and is a fast mover.”

Sean said “I am a big World War 2 history buff and I love writing songs that educate a little bit and tell the story at the same time. I knew I wanted a song from this era on the record and I had not covered the Battle of the Bulge yet so it was time. Casey “The Sentinel” Trask wrote some sweet riffs and this one came together really quick. I love his lead section in it too might be one of my favorite leads on the record.”

Harry added. “I had a great time recording this one. I think this song really suited my style of vocals well and I think that is why Sean featured me in this one a bit more. It reminded me of Jag Panzer’s The Mission song (The Guns of Navarone).”

The driving "Like The Earth Orbits Sun" is one of the tracks that features bassist Andreas Richau's captivating, emotional vocals, along with the multi-faceted exclamation point "Elpis" and spherical "Be Brave, Fragile Heart". "Dark Clouds Behind, Bright Skies Ahead" and "Appearance Of Earth" open up another spectrum of sound and expand the cosmos with the passionate cello playing of guest musician Akito Goto. "So, we asked ourselves what hope stands for and what it means to us. We had a lot of conversations within the band about the good but also the bad aspects of hope and our experiences with it.

And we got answers and inspiration by history and philosophy. Like Kant who has extremely positive views on this topic - hope is necessity for human existence, it’s not seen by him as a personal but collective thing. This is where the album title came from.

The whole process of creating this album really took us on a journey and we found new ways to express our thoughts and feelings with our music. We took a few trips to France and wrote songs together in a cabin, but we also had to write a lot of parts simultaneously, since we are not living in one city any more. We had the chance to work together with new lovely people but we also reconnected with old partners in crime.

All in all it wasn’t an easy journey, but now we made it and are happy and proud to finally release this album with Napalm Records!"

Embrace the new death metal overlords and their second full length 'Where Death Lies'! CARNATION equals blistering and crushing death metal madness and, with this new chapter, return with relentless destruction and greater punishment than ever before.

Early 2013, guitar player Jonathan Verstrepen created the band to show his appreciation for the old school death metal legends from the ‘80s & early ‘90s. Vocalist Simon Duson, bass player Yarne Heylen, guitar player Bert Vervoort, and drummer Vincent Verstrepen were summoned to complete the band, and it didn’t take long until the chemistry between this quintet hit critical mass.

The Belgian’s first EP offering, entitled 'Cemetery of the Insane', was released upon the masses in 2015 . Tracks such as "Explosive Cadavers" or "The Rituals of Flesh" take you back in time to the better days of shredding riffs, neck-breaking drums, and skull-crushing guttural vocals.

The live rituals that followed were executed with stone cold merciless aggression. CARNATION delivered their bloodbath at select festivals across Europe during 2015 and 2016. Their next journey led them to distant Asia for their first tour across mainland Japan. This resulted in the infamous 'Live at Asakusa Deathfest' album, which saw the light in (2017).

These releases, combined with their reputation as a notoriously impressive live act, drew the attention of fans worldwide and provided CARNATION with the opportunity to perform at several European festivals and saw the band touring alongside PESTILENCE during their special Brazilian tour in April 2018. After signing with Season of Mist in 2018, CARNATION welcomed new and loyal audiences to death’s domain and invited them to witness them rise to their throne!

CARNATION rage on in 2019 with more spectacular live shows at 70.000 Tons of Metal, Alcatraz (BE) and Damnation Festival (UK), as part of their touring rampage throughout Japan and Europe (with PUNGENT STENCH and DESERTED FEAR), before entering the studio for the recordings of a brand new album. The mastering for the new offering was done by the mighty Jens Bogren (SEPULTURA, ENSLAVED, ARCH ENEMY) at the Fascination Street Studios in Örebro (SE).

Written by Nikki Deloach and Megan McNulty, the film stars Deloach and David Haydn-Jones as a woman’s Christmas wish is answered in unexpected ways when her late grandfather’s journal turns up and reveals an untold romance. Though he is not in the movie, McCreery serves as an Executive Producer.

Co-written with Frank Rogers and Monty Criswell, McCreery shared, “It was a special day writing this one. We all sat down, and at first, I was just talking about my granddaddy. I always believed in it and thought it was a story that everyone could relate to—I feel like everyone has these things that they go back to and wish they had more time. We worked on this song for three or four different days, and a lot changed, and it took a while, but I wanted it to be perfect.”

Released as the first song from his RIAA Gold-certified album Seasons Change, “Five More Minutes” was ranked No. 2 on the iTunes country singles chart and No. 9 on the iTunes all-genre singles chart on the first day of its release in 2017, while it debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard Country Digital Sales Chart.

Earlier this week, McCreery’s third consecutive No. 1 single from Seasons Change, the RIAA Gold-certified “In Between” was named one of the Most Performed Songs of the Year at the 69th Annual BMI Country Awards.

Since their last album, 'Chapter 3: The Last Selection', independent outfit, Paleface have gained international recognition throughout the Deathcore and Beatdown Community. Their new album, "Fear & Dagger", focuses on more mature and critical topics related to the fears and struggles young people have to content with in the 21st century, most importantly, the topic of mental health. The album is a 65 minute monster, containing 16 tracks with guest appearances from members of Justice For The Damned (AUS), Traitors (US) and Landmvrks(FR) and a PALEFACE fan, diagnosed with schizophrenia, who lent his voice and perspective to the album.

"Deathtouch" follows the release of previous single "Dead Man's Diary" feat. LANDMVRKS frontman Florent Salfati. The track, released in September, has clocked up 381,000 cross-platform streams and 76,000 YouTube views.

ABOUT PALEFACE

PALEFACE was formed in Zurich, Switzerland in 2017 by vocalist Marc Zellweger (Zelli) and drummer Colin Hammond (CJ) having met through a mutual friend in 2016. After bonding over a shared love of beatdowns and hardcore, Zelli and CJ shook hands at a concert in 2017 and promised they would create the craziest beatdown band ever together.

They recruited guitarist Yannick Lehmann to the band and released their debut ‘Chapter 1: From The Gallows’ in 2018. Later that year, they brought bassist Tommy-Lee Abt to PALEFACE family. They played their first show in October 2018 and quickly grew in popularity with the song “Deprivation Method”.

In early 2019, Paleface started writing ‘Chapter 2: Witch King’ which was released in May 2019. The band started to gain international attention with the release of tracks “Human Hunter” and “Skin People”. They released the single “No Mercy At All” at the end of 2019 and started working on the final installment of the dark story they’d created with Chapters 1 & 2.

Chapter 3: The Last Selection’ was released on October 30th 2020 to much acclaim. PALEFACE released two music videos for huge tracks “Curse Us”, “The Rats” and “Skalpell” which quickly ranked high in the deadown/hardcore charts and saw the band become cover stars on Spotify’s Heavy Beatdown playlist. The released the music video for "Lights Out" earlier this year. Their releases to date have seen them clock up nearly 5.1 million streams across all platforms and 125k monthly listeners on Spotify alone.

"Paint The Sky" is easily the most accomplished and mature album put together by Vivien thus far in his career. Being the son of two progressive musicians from the '70s and growing up surrounded by progressive music, Vivien always wanted to craft a true-to-its-roots progressive rock album. He spent a lot of time laying down the basics for the new effort and along with this new album comes a change in vocalist specifically designed for this more progressive version of LALU. In May 2020, Vivien announced Damian Wilson (Arena, Headspace, Threshold) as the lead vocalist for ´Paint The Sky’. LALU's lineup on the album is rounded out by Jelly Cardarelli (on drums) and Joop Wolters (guitars and bass).

LALU's first full-length album, ‘Oniric Metal’ (2005) garnered critical acclaim upon its release, including being named ‘Album of the Month’ in Rock Hard Magazine, and marked a new chapter for Vivien and his insatiable need to create mind-expanding, cinematic music. LALU's second opus, 'Atomic Ark' (2013) featured vocalist Martin LeMar, bassist Mike LePond (Symphony X), guitarist Simone Mularoni (DGM), and world class drummer Virgil Donati (Planet X, Steve Vai, Allan Holdsworth). Additional contributions came from Jens Johansson (Stratovarius), Joop Wolters, Jordan Rudess (Dream Theater), Marco Sfogli (James LaBrie), Mike Andersson (Cloudscape) and Peter Wildoer (James LaBrie).

Spring 2014 saw Vivien venturing out on a unique live tour, hosting only a few select shows featuring the all-star Atomic Ark line-up of Martin LeMar, Mike LePond, Simone Mularoni, and Virgil Donati, adding Joop Wolters as a second guitarist on stage. After a few weeks’ practice, the tour culminated in the live recording of their set during the final stop. Produced by Vivien and mixed and mastered by Simone Mularoni at Domination Studio, the digital-only ‘Live at P60’ was released in June 2015.

Progressive, avant-garde black metal experimentalists DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT have never stopped smashing through the boundaries of the genre they’ve called home since forming in early 2009. And with 2021 welcoming the release of fifth album, Noktvrn, the Germans are looking to expand the minds and perspectives of their ever-increasing fanbase, similar to how they pushed themselves in every element of the new album’s creation. Ironically, supporters being able to pay witness to the leaps and bounds the band has made over the course of 12 years, five albums and one EP and live recordings should count themselves lucky for being able to do so.

DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT may have existed and thrived over the course of that time, but forging on beyond its self-titled debut wasn’t part of guitarist/vocalist/mastermind Nikita Kamprad’s original plan.

Formed out of the ashes of black metal quartet FROSTGRIM and good time-lovin’ melodic deathcore posse, FUCK YOUR SHADOW FROM BEHIND, Kamprad and original vocalist Tobias Jaschinsky founded DER WEG EINER FREIHEITas an expression of both their love of black metal and the search for liberation through art, as evidenced by taking the idea of their moniker — which translates to ‘The Way of Freedom’ — to heart.

“FROSTGRIM could be seen as the direct predecessor to DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT,” says Kamprad, from his studio in Würzburg, in the state of Bavaria, “because it was Tobias, our former singer, and I. We had this black metal band together when we also had FUCK YOUR SHADOW FROM BEHIND. We were a part of both bands and when they split up, there was nothing left. For me, black metal was always the most important musical genre where I could see myself doing music. So, I created songs for myself and basically they became the first DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT album. It is officially self-titled, but it actually doesn’t have a title. It’s just Der Weg einer Freiheit because initially after I wrote and released that first album, the band was supposed to be over. But the feedback from friends, fans and the press was so immense and so many people wanted to see the band live and to see it continue, in the end, I was like ‘why not?’ There was no reason why I couldn’t go on with new stuff.”

Originally self-released, the debut was picked up by Viva Hate Records who then issued follow-ups in the form of the Agonie EP and second full-length, Unstille which were supported via appearances at name festivals such as Summer Breeze Open Air and Wolfszeit Festival as well as on European tours opening for the likes of WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, NEAERA. 2014 had DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT joining forces with Season of Mist for third album, Stellar which was issued a few months later in March of 2015.

With the label and a groundswell of support behind them, the band’s star continued to rise in Stellar’s shadow with showings at Wacken Open Air, Hellfest and Roadburn, a tour in support of MOONSPELL and their first headlining runs. 2017 saw the release of album number four, Finisterre, which continued the steady growth of the band’s profile. In addition to drawing bigger crowds at festivals and on tours, they ventured overseas for the first time, playing in Japan and Iceland.

“I was doing music for six or seven years when I started DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT and I was always in bands that would meet up and write in a rehearsal space, but I always wanted to have my own band. I had the opportunity to do my own thing and that’s why this band is called DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT because it’s basically about my way of achieving my own freedom. For some people that way is through sport or cooking or writing; for me, it was about writing music and lyrics.”

Twelve years on, Kamprad is taking advantage of the freedoms afforded to him as he strives to personify the band’s titular expression. Being joined by drummer Tobias Schuler, bassist Nicolas Ziska and guitarist Nicolas Rausch has made DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT more a unit than ever and allowed Kamprad to feel comfortable relinquishing his steely grip on the band’s creative reins during the writing process which began in late 2019 and was completed by September of 2020. This has allowed for vast differences in Noktvrn’s creation that have expanded the album’s overall breadth beyond black metal and extreme music to incorporate the influence and inspiration of classical composer Frédéric Chopin’s Nocturnes, his series of 21 so-called “night pieces.” This, in turn, birthed the album’s artistic mandate requiring that material only be created during the wee hours.

“I always wanted to do an album about the night and dreams and I’m really, really big fan of Chopin and his night pieces in general. For me, it made sense that this album should have a title that connects with this theme. To the left of me right now is a piano and some of Chopin’s sheet music for the Nocturnes. One day I probably looked at it and wanted to pay tribute to this great composer. That’s why we chose to write the title a little bit differently with the ‘k’ instead of a ‘c’ and a ‘v’ instead of a ‘u’ to make it more special. We also chose the ‘v’ in particular because it’s our fifth album and that’s the Roman numeral for five. It’s just something special we did with the name, even though we weren’t sure at first about the lettering because it can be seen as generic, especially in black metal. We have reasons that are deeper than what you see on the surface; not because we want to be ‘true’ — or ‘trve’ — or something,” he explains with a laugh.

The Chopin and classical music influences on Noktvrn are much more than surface cosmetics. Lilting acoustic guitar piece ‘Finisterre II’ opens the album. Jericho-like horns are the bleating accent to the proggy black metal of ‘Monument.’ Baroque arpeggiation familiar to the tuxedo-and-coat tails crowd are spiralled around Oslo’s Helvete shop in ‘Morgen.’ There are also tendrils of folk, shoegaze and indie rock that make brief and appropriate appearances, but it’s the night-time theme that runs deep as Kamprad discovered early on in the writing process.

“‘Immortal’ was one of the first songs I wrote for the album and it was really, really weird because I wrote the song when it was very, very late when I fell into a night-time rhythm that was not my usual rhythm. Here, I felt I was having different kinds of dreams and thoughts. Sometimes I’d be half-awake, half-asleep and not really aware of what my real state of mind was. That was an experience that made me think about giving the entire album the nocturnal or night theme. I’m a very passionate sleeper; I love sleeping and dreaming and dreams are important to me because there’s a freedom in them. In this night rhythm, my head was in a different state and I wanted to create in this state because it was something different for me.”

Lyrically, Noktvrn has Kamprad taking enormous steps outside what has become his regular modus operandi since he took over the mic following Jaschinsky’s departure in 2012. The new album has him expanding his reach beyond not only his usual collection of personal thoughts and mother tongue, but also the style and texture with which he would previously deliver his meanings, ideas, and recollections.

“Usually, the lyrics have mainly been about myself, but on this album there were two events in the last two or three years connected to anxiety attacks. I haven’t experienced them myself, but a couple people who are very close to me have. The lyrics for the song ‘Am Rande der Dunkelheit’ are based around these people’s experiences and them telling me how they felt in a situation where they think they can’t breathe, that they think they’re dying and their life is coming to an end. I tried to imagine through the lyrics how they might have felt. I was trying to find my own words to describe the experience while trying to describe it if I had lived it myself.

“Another completely new thing on this album are the songs ‘Immortal’ and ‘Haven’ which are in English, which we’ve never done before. I always wanted to sing in English ever since I took over the vocals. Singing is the most direct musical expression I feel. Playing guitar is cool, but singing is even more my thing and I always want to push the boundaries so I implemented clean singing as well but, for me, doing clean vocals is very uncomfortable and difficult in German. I think singing clean vocals in English sounds nicer because German is a hard language which fits the harsh vocals perfectly. I wanted to try it out to see how it felt, and surprise, surprise, it felt great! I really like it and imagine there will be more English lyrics in the future.”

Barring a pair of live albums, all previous DER WEG EINER FREIHEITreleases were created almost entirely from the ground up by Kamprad. He would write the songs on his own and do the bass, guitar and vocal tracks himself with Schuler playing drums while engineering, producing and mixing along the way. Kamprad may still be the songwriter-in-chief who produced and mixed Noktvrn (with assistance from Jan Kerscher), but this album makes a significant developmental step as it not only welcomes song writing contributions from the other members, but has the band ably demonstrating their ability by recording live off the floor.

“The new album is the most natural sounding DER WEG EINER FREIHEITalbum,” he says excitedly, “not only the sound, but the riffing and because we recorded the songs live. Music today, especially metal, can be too difficult and technical for bands to even play and record their own songs from start to finish. For me it was very important during the song writing to focus on playing the songs all the way through without stopping. That created a very natural flow through the songs and throughout the whole album. Also, it was a new thing that the whole band was involved in the whole recording process and the last stages of the song writing. Writing and recording mainly by myself was a very exhausting and streamlined process that I liked at some points, but after Finisterre I couldn’t do that anymore and had to change something.

“I still wrote the songs here in my studio then showed them to the others,” he explains. “Then, we met up for rehearsal and pre-production and played through the songs, recorded them and really analysed all the small details, the iteration of parts, the transitions, the guitar sound, the drum beats and everything, even the cymbal hits! What came out were still my songs, but with all kinds of input from the guys. They’re the same songs, but going over all the details brings them to another level. When we entered the studio all we had to do was focus on playing and nothing else because everything was settled already. That was a new and very good experience for us as a band.”

All of the above makes Noktvrn a beacon of musical forward thought, drastic jumps and transformative risks. In his soft-spoken humble manner, Kamprad laughs at the idea that DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT is little more than a personal expression vehicle; instead, he refers to the band as “a very professional hobby,” while downplaying what makes these black metal mavericks entirely special.

“Maybe what is the special thing about us is that we never stopped. Since the beginning, we haven’t taken a break and we’ve always tried to be present with tours and shows and festivals, so there was never a break.”

The Flood marks the band's first release since 2013 and features Morgan Rose (Sevendust)producing as well as playing drums on the record. It was recorded by Jose Urquiza (3 Years Hollow), mixed by Jay Ruston & Jose Urquiza and mastered by Andy Van Dette.

After an unofficial hiatus since 2014, Candlelight Red entered the studio in East Moline Illinois with Sevendust drummer Morgan Rose, who not only once again produced the band but collaborated on writing and filling drumming duties on the record.

The band toured the US extensively from 2010 to 2013 in support of their albums The Wreckage & Reclamation while their singles "Demons" , "Feel The same" and their cover of Roxette's "She's Got the Look" blazed the airwaves. Candlelight Red toured on 2012's Rockstar Energy Uproar Tour supporting Shinedown, Godsmack, Staind, Papa Roach and POD.
