A new force, LEAGUE OF DISTORTION unite to defeat the shadows cast upon the music scene with their fresh sound and style! Back in 2017, Anna Brunner celebrated remarkable international success with her symphonic metal band Exit Eden and has now teamed up with notorious guitarist Jim Müller of renowned heavy metal band Kissin’ Dynamite.

Todd Kerns is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and producer. He is most noted for being the bass player and backup singer in Slash featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators, and for being the front man of gold-record selling Canadian band The Age of Electric. In more recent years, he has been making his mark as a singer-songwriter with sold out solo performances as well as fronting former KISS guitarist Bruce Kulick’s band as well as his own Canadian supergroup, Toque. 

Guitarist Stef Burns has a fantastic and varied history in rock music. He has spent time playing with pop acts like Sheila E., Berlin, and Huey Lewis & The News as well as rock acts like Y&T, whom he recorded four albums with, and Alice Cooper, playing on the albums 'Hey Stoopid' and 'The Last Temptation'. Stef currently plays with Italian rock superstar Vasco Rossi and also has his own band, the Stef Burns League. 

Drummer Will Hunt currently resides in the drum throne for Evanescence, whom he first started playing with in 2007, and has performed and written on their last three studio albums, including their most recent release, 'The Bitter Truth', which debuted at #1 on 27 different countries' album charts. Over the years, the in-demand skins man has performed with Dark New Day, Skrape, Staind, Vasco Rossi, Vince Neil, Tommy Lee, Slaughter, and more. He has also appeared on albums by Black Label Society, Michael Sweet (Stryper), Crossfade, Dirty Shirley (George Lynch), Device (David Draiman of Disturbed), and more.

NEW METAL SUPERGROUP, “ELEGANT WEAPONS,” FEATURES MEMBERS OF JUDAS PRIEST, RAINBOW, AND PANTERA

Judging from its band members’ resumes, the newly-launched Elegant Weapons will rock ferociously – which includes singer Ronnie Romero (Rainbow, MSG), guitarist Richie Faulkner (Judas Priest), bassist Rex Brown (Pantera, Down), and drummer Scott Travis (Judas Priest). The band will be issuing their full-length debut, ‘Horns for a Halo,’ in spring 2023, which was produced by Andy Sneap and issued via Nuclear Blast Records.

“It’s exciting to be part of a label like Nuclear Blast that has such a rich history and level of respect among fans and the music industry,” says Faulkner. “Monte Conner [Nuclear Blast VP A&R] knows Andy Sneap well, and Andy has always held Monte and label in very high regard. Monte has loved the record from the very early demo stages. It’s very valuable and important to me that the label I sign with understand and connect with the music. This record represents for me more of my DNA as a guitar player and a songwriter. Heavy, but moving slightly outside the realms of ‘heavy metal.’ Those roots are obvious, but I wanted to reach in a bit and see what else came out that wasn’t necessarily ‘expected’.”

Says Monte Conner, “I am such a huge fan of all the players involved, especially Richie. As a diehard Priest fan, I have enjoyed watching help breathe new life into the band and add to their incredible story and legacy. What an amazing player he is. People always focus on leads, and of course Richie is a master in that department, but I can listen to him play rhythm guitar all day long! His rhythm playing is just so tasteful and magical. I can’t wait for fans to hear this album and discover how multi-faceted he is.”

And according to the guitarist, Elegant Weapons features his “dream line-up.” “I’ve always wanted to make a record with Scott outside of Priest. Add to that Rex Brown’s unmistakable tone and attitude is something special. Having those guys as the rhythm section is a guitar players dream. The icing on the cake was Ronnie Romero. One of the new breed of instantly classic vocalists, Ronnie brought a character and a swagger to the songs that is instantly iconic, making these songs his own.

As for the music, Richie describes it as “a mix of Jimi Hendrix, Priest, Sabbath, solo Ozzy and Black Label Society – heavy, catchy, and with melody. Sort of old school and modern at once if that makes any sense, and actually down-tuned a whole step. The Marshall Plexi basically does one thing, but you’ve got to crank it to 11 for it to have that distorted sound. It hasn’t got a lot of bells and whistles on it or different channels and effects. It basically does one thing and does it very well. But again down-tuning creates more of a modern sound, and by using the classic sound of the Marshall Plexi, you get that juxtaposition, that contrast. All told, there are a lot of guitar solos and the songs are on the heavier side. And even though there’s a lot of melody, it’s still going to shake your bones.”

Specific to the songs, Richie explains that “Me and acoustic don’t really get along, so there’s only one mellow song on it, a sort of smoky, haunted, New Orleans kind of tune called ‘Ghost of You,’ with de-tuned 1920s piano on it. That one is about a memory, or ghost of a lost love. But that’s about as acoustic as it gets. I’m not really attracted to acoustic guitar in general. It’s mainly kind of heavy and full-on, really. There’s a song called ‘White Horse,’ plus ‘Horns for a Halo’, which is like Tony Iommi crossed with Alice in Chains. That’s about the way we justify the bad things we do. When we turn up on Judgement Day, will the angels kind of confuse our horns for halos, if you know what I mean.”

But really, the over-arching mandate with Elegant Weapons is to perpetuate the rich legacy of the traditional proto-power metal invented by the heavy metal titans of the ‘70s and ‘80s, most pertinently Richie’s own band, Judas Priest. And in 2023, fans will finally get to hear what this promising new band sounds like – with the arrival of ‘Horns for a Halo.’

Nita Strauss Enlists Vocals From Alissa White-Gluz On Brand New Single; "The Wolf You Feed"

Speaking on her new release, NITA shares

If you look back at old interviews from the last ten years, any time I was asked about collaborating with a vocalist in the future, Alissa White-Gluz was always the first name out of my mouth. She is truly one of my favorite vocalists and performers in the industry and creating this track together was everything I hoped it would be!

I’m very proud to release this track, especially now with everything else that’s going on. This time in history, whether in politics, music, social media, or our personal lives, has been an eye opening look into the two wolves of a lot of people out there, and maybe this song will be a reminder that we all have the ability to choose how we respond to things.

The lyrics of this song were inspired by “The Story of the Two Wolves”, a legend widely attributed to Native American storytellers.

An old grandfather was teaching his grandson about life:

“A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy.

“It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil–he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.”

He continued, “The other is good – he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you–and inside every other person, too.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: “Which wolf will win?”

The grandfather simply replied, “The one you feed".

ALISSA adds 

Nita and I finally got to collaborate - something we have both wanted to do for years! The Wolf You Feed is a kickass, catchy metal track with a really cool vibe. I kept the “two wolves” analogy as a foundation throughout the song while playing up the dichotomy of the two sides of the tug-of-war we all have inside us. I recorded my parts in my home studio and it was an absolute pleasure to build this song with Nita. I am honoured to be a part of it! Can’t wait to do this again!

"Wolf You Feed", is the second song Nita has released featuring a star guest vocalist, the first being the enormously successful "Dead Inside" which featured guest vocals from Disturbed's David Draiman and saw NITA become the first ever solo female to have a #1 hit at Active Rock Radio. She also returned to her instrumental roots earlier this year with the release of single "Summer Storm", a fast-paced, emotive shred-fest. Combined, the two singles have had 3.5 million YouTube views and over 10 million streams on Spotify alone.

Rock solo artist John DeMena has released a cover of The Doors "People Are Strange", along with a music video for the track. The LA-based DeMena's homage to the 1967 classic is part of a compilation series honoring music from artists including The Doors, Talking Heads, and Warren Zevon, which will be released via Rhino Entertainment. Speaking about the cover, DeMena comments:

“I wanted to pay tribute to this timeless classic with a cover that stayed true to the essence and soul of the original while also taking the song through different sonic landscapes.”

Personnel on the cover of "People Are Strange" is comprised of John DeMena (vocals, guitar, bass), along with Jimmy Kimmel Live keyboardist Jeff Babko and drummerCristian Chiloe. The track was mastered by legendary audio engineer Dave Collins(Metallica, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains). The music video was directed by Vicente Cordero of Industrialism Films, whose credits include Cradle Of Filth, Suicide Silence, Mr. Big, and Sons of Apollo.

In addition to the release of the "People Are Strange"cover, John DeMena has been nominated for a 2022 Hollywood Music In Media Award for his "Eternal Eyes" music video. The event is scheduled to be held at The Avalon in Hollywood on November 16, and a list of nominees can be found here.

John DeMena is an award-nominated rock singer and guitarist from Los Angeles who has worked with producers and musicians of Alice Cooper, Jane’s Addiction, and Jimmy Kimmel among others. One of the benefits of today’s musical landscape is the breadth with which artists can record and produce their compositions, from famous acts to talented emerging artists. That’s certainly the case with John DeMena, who wrote and produced his upcoming debut album Dreams and Lies entirely by himself. As he points out, “after moving to Los Angeles and not being able to find anyone artistically aligned with me, I had to take a DIY approach and do everything myself. It was the only way forward.” For a couple of years, he wrote nonstop, picked other instruments, penned all lyrics, and used software to program drums and other instruments in pre-production before seeking out session players for this debut.

He then recruited musicians Glen Sobel, Pete Griffin, and Matt Rohde to record the drum, bass, and keyboard parts respectively, and took on the guitar and vocal duties himself. Lastly, he invited axeman John Ziegler, who plays in Volto! alongside Tool’s Danny Carey for one guest solo on Angel City. John DeMena self-released an early mix of this debut in 2019 that got the attention of several record labels, iconic brands such as PRS Guitars (which hand-picked him as one of their new artists), earned him a nomination for a 2020 Hollywood Music in Media Award under the best rock song category for his song Eternal Eyes (previous winners of these awards include artists such as Trent Reznor or Amy Lee (Evanescence) and a deal with Vere Music (Warner ADA) for the release of his debut album in early 2023.

Of course, DeMena’s journey wasn’t exactly easy. After emigrating from Spain to the United States in 2008, he found himself jobless, contactless, and without even a driver’s license or sufficient work experience. He explains: “I didn’t even have credit, so I couldn’t rent a place. Instead, I had to live in hostels and other inhospitable places for six months. Then, the recession hit, and I was laid off four years in a row. I spent years going from job to job, so those first years in L.A. were excruciatingly painful and lonely.” Never one to give up, he continued believing in himself and pushing forward; that resolve assisted in strengthening his character and moving him toward his main goal: a career in music. “Those experiences separated the boy from the man, in a manner of speaking, and helped me develop a military-style discipline and get to know myself better,” he adds.

Inspired by legendary groups like Pink Floyd, Bowie, Alice in Chains, Pantera, Radiohead, NIN, and AC/DC—all of whom can be felt within Dreams and Lies to varying degrees—John DeMena set out to not put any limits to his creativity while presenting the listener with a personal and modern sound. Going back to “Eternal Eyes,” it was also turned into a music video by animator/filmmaker Ishan Shukla (whose work has won dozens of international awards and been featured at over one hundred film festivals). As with making the album itself, DeMena found their partnership demanding yet immensely gratifying: “I reached out to him with a mostly formed idea of how I wanted the storyline, aesthetics, and visual world to be. Then, we modified sections and let it all evolve organically. I can’t thank him enough for his patience.”

Sleep Signals Announce 'The Death Do Us Part' Tour This Fall!

Minneapolis, MN-based rockers Sleep Signals have announced that they will return to the road on the The Death Do Us Part Tour with QUOR, which begins November 30th at The Big Dipper in Spokane, Washington and concludes on December 11th.

Sleep Signals, have garnered a dedicated following through relentless touring, their explosive live performances, and their ability to blend catchy hooks with their high-energy songwriting style.

In 2021 the band released a new EP, Ethereal, featuring the single, "Fireproof," which garnered the band's first commercial radio success. The single was featured on Sirius XM's Octane and received spins on 80+ US FM radio stations, spending 11 weeks on the Billboard Active Rock radio chart.

Unfortunately, 2021 also saw the band experience a severe bus accident on tour with POD, From Ashes To New, and All Good Things that left several members in the hospital and rehabbing injuries for months. The band released the music video for "The Return" to commemorate their comeback from the accident and look to get back to the touring circuit as soon as late 2022.

Founded in 2014, the band hit the road in early 2015 and has since played over 500 shows in 45 states. Prior to the accident, the band was coming off of major full US tours with heavy hittersHellyeah and Nonpoint, as well as Atreyu, Memphis May Fire, Ice Nine Kills, All That Remains, Attila, Escape the Fate, and Like A Storm.

NYC-based postpunk duo Frenchy and the Punk has released 'Come In and Play', an upbeat Siouxsie-esque delight and the second enchanting single from their forthcoming 'Zen Ghost' album. Their seventh long-player record, this will be released via the EA Recordings label on October 28.

Frenchy and the Punk is vocalist, percussionist and lyricist Samantha Stephensonand guitarist-composer Scott Helland, who was co-founder and bassist ofOutpatients and also Deep Wound (along with Dinosaur Jr. founders J Mascis andLou Barlow). Influenced by The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Blondie, Concrete Blonde and The B52’s, the duo thrive in their trademark blend of post-punk and dark folk music.

About 'Come In and Play', Samantha Stephenson says, "I was named after the character in Bewitched. My mom was a fan of the show. It sparked a curiosity and enthusiasm for all things mystical and magical from an early age. I could be quite solitary and eventually dove into a meditation practice. That feeling of going inward and exploring the inner workings of the esoteric realm always felt very comforting."

Earlier, the band released the lead track 'Mon Souvenir', an unapologetically new wave nugget, propelled by chugging acoustic chords, that reflects the album’s central theme of transcending ‘mind phantoms’ - the experiences from the past that linger within all of us.

Dark times make for dark songs. 'Zen Ghost' was written and recorded during the downtime of 2020-2021. Here, the duo's shadowy sound takes an even darker turn. An inward spin, into the pair’s previously unexplored personal planes and interpretations of the insanity of our increasingly tumultuous age. But despite its more pronounced moodiness, like the rest of the band’s oeuvre, 'Zen Ghost' offers plenty of opportunities to dance in the darkness.

Tapped as one of the Top 25 duos in the US by Yahoo! Music, the freewheeling pair has released numerous recordings, including the acclaimed albums 'Happy Madness' (2010), 'Hey Hey Cabaret' (2012), 'Elephant Uproar' (2013), 'Cartwheels' (2014), 'Bonjour Batfrog' (2014), and 'Hooray Beret' (2019).

French-born, but raised in the UK and USA, Stephenson’s study of piano and dance ignited her eventual rejection of corporate conformity and fueled a quest to lead a truly autonomous life through art and music. A son of jazz-loving teachers, Helland grew up in Western Massachusetts and was a vital player on the region’s fertile early hardcore punk scene.

Helland and Stephenson met in NYC in 1998, when Stephenson spontaneously jumped on stage to accompany Helland during his solo guitar performance. The artistic union was immediate, powerful and undeniable. The two began to tour with fevered zeal, turning heads with their striking aesthetic, steadily building fervent fans on the mystical-folk/steampunk festival, coffeehouse, convention, and club circuits with their boisterous, revival-like live shows.

Since then, they've performed live with Dead Can Dance's Peter Ulrich and Dresden Dolls' Brian Viglione, and opened for Thomas Dolby, Dinosaur Jr., The World Inferno Friendship Society, Rasputina, Cruxshadows, Hurray For The Riff Raff and The Young Dubliners.

Iconic shoegaze / postpunk outfit A Shoreline Dream presents 'Harlow Syndrome', the latest audio-visual offering from their new 'Loveblind' album, released viaLatenight Weeknight Records. Their sixth full-length record dives into recollections and past desires while looking forward in a wash of soundwaves pointing towards a blinding future.

Filmed in Denver & Littleton, Colorado and starring Jessica Halpine and Allan Cutler, this video was filmed, direct and edited by Ryan Policky with costumes byTiffany Smyth and Jessica Halrpine.

"My first intention was to create a video for the moment I thought I was passing away, which goes along with that track. I personally feel it's one of the best on the album after giving it some time to settle," says ASD mastermind Ryan Policky.

"This 'Loveblind' album is an introspective view of things building all the way up, then crashing back down - like relationships that try to rekindle, only to find that the original reason for the failure has grown even stronger. The songs and driving energy behind each represents rare moments of true passion and also those of complete devastation. Even in perceived time of feeling, things couldn’t get any better, a finality lies waiting behind the next corner".

Their first release since the Covid pandemic began, offering 40 minutes of goth-laced progressive soundscapes, the band had previewed thelead tracks 'Alarms Stop Ringing' and the album's title track 'Loveblind'. Produced by Ryan Policky and recorded over 10 months in the Barnum suburb of Denver, Colorado, this album features immense synth layers, the band's signature guitar and symphonic vocals.

In 2020, A Shoreline Dream released their 'Melting' album (2020), the latest in a series of critically acclaimed releases. Formed in 2005, today ASD revolves around two original members - multi-instrumentalist / vocalist Ryan Policky and guitarist Erik Jeffries. Their legacy is further rounded out thanks to collaborations with legends such as Ulrich Schnauss, Mark Kramer and The Engineers (for whom they created a remix for progressive label gods K-Scope). Also of note is the fact that the band also opened for Chapterhouse for their very final appearance.

The pandemic has taken its toll on our mental well-being and the perception of money and power has blown previous years away. Dying to get back to the good times and moments of pure, unscathed lust, we long for new experiences to sweep us off our feet. 'Loveblind' reaches for that same energy, taking cues from previous A Shoreline Dream works, drawing from their progressive goth roots. Layers of moodiness, blissful explosions of rock and chugging tempo mix with the pain, love, hope and moments of near death experienced while creating the album itself.

The world of INSANITY ALERT is a dark yet happy place. Fast, aggressive music, crazy lyrics about alcohol, rage, weed, ignorance and hate, all drenched in an 80’s hot sauce but played with a 2019 attitude. The band emerged from the Austrian city of Innsbruck in 2011, with only one intent: deliver crushing, crossover party thrash.

A tongue-in-cheek concept backed up by strong musical prowess worked out extremely well as ‘First Diagnosis’ proved in 2012. This demo was welcomed with open arms and the first impression of the public quickly confirmed by ‘Second Opinion’, which came out the year after. In 2014, debut album, ‘Insanity Alert’ delighted critics and fans alike and was reissued four years later by Season of Mist. The wild Tyrolians, always eager to please, next served a juicy ‘Moshburger’ (2016).

With ‘666-pack’ (2019) the band proves once more to be an unstoppable force. Mercenary Notes Pt 1 continues on Derision Cult’s themes of over-stimulation and public manipulation by corporations to sell more products. Mainman Dave McAnally draws on first hand experiences from decades in the advertising industry to create a set of tracks which serve as survival guide for maintaining mental health in a media-entrenched world determined to generate hysteria and sensationalism among the masses.

“On the last album, we pointed out ways the media prays on people’s emotions, on this one, we’re talking about solutions and how to move forward in the 21st century. It’s called Mercenary Notes because we wanted to sort of reveal how the magic tricks for playing on emotions are done so they’re easier to spot. I think that’s good for people to think about how they’re hearing things and if it’s meant to wind them up vs. provide objective information. Even though the tracks are visceral and aggressive, there’s a positive message throughout it”.

Dave is joined by Sean Payne who produced the album and brings the classic Glitch Mode Chicago Industrial sound to the tracks. Dave says “After the last album, I knew I wanted to step up the game production wise and Sean was a natural for me to go to. While I’m a big fan of Cyanotic and Conformco, Sean and I have a common point of view and Derision Cult fits great in the Glitch Mode world. We were able to retain the country/blues-meets-metal riffs I started out with while adding his soundscapes and massive percussion to the party.”

In addition to Dave and Sean, Mercenary Notes Pt 1 features a high profile cast of guests that include Chris Connelly (Ministry, Pigface), Reeves Gabrels (David Bowie, The Cure) and Justin Broadrick (Godflesh). Chris Connelly contributes lead vocals on one of the lead singles entitled Deaf Blood which also features an animated video by Empire Animate out of Vancouver. Reeves Gabrels contributes multiple guitar tracks and blistering leads across multiple songs and Justin Broadrick provided a haunting remix of the track ‘Slaves Rebuild’. “Reeves was a hero of mine from way back. The way he played on those Tin Machine albums and David Bowie’s stuff in the 90’s changed how I thought about what a guitar can do as a metal guy in the 90’s. It was a real thrill to work with him on this. Especially hearing his unmistakable style over riffs and beats Sean and I created.” In addition to guests on the album, Mercenary Notes Pt 1 has an entire design theme created by legendary Chicago artist Jim Marcus (Die Warzau, Go Fight). “It was great working with Jim on this because we’re both ex-big agency guys. So we have some common feelings about messaging and exploiting people’s emotions to sell products. He did an amazing job bringing that to life visually without being super obvious”.

Mercenary Notes Pt 1 will be available digital and CD with multiple bundle formats on December 2 . Part 2 of the Mercenary Notes series is due for the following year.

Derision Cult is a project by Chicago solo artist Dave McAnally. Dave is an Iowa native and a multi-instrumentalist involved in a number of projects across a range of genres. He’s been featured on releases by Metropolis Records as well as his own imprint South Street Dungeon.

KATATONIA To Begin North American Tour Next Month!

Melancholic metal masters KATATONIA will at long last return to North America this fall after a five-year absence! The band is proud to begin their headlining campaign in the US + Canada next month, with the likes of progressive metal frontrunners The Ocean Collective and prog-folk force Cellar Darling rounding out the bill.

Active rock band No Resolve released their new single "Come Back Stronger" along with the official music video through Noise Machine. The single premiered on Sirius XM Octane.

No Resolve earned their recognition when vocalist Oscar Pegorraro, who is a UPS driver during the day, defied all odds. He started doing TikTok videos that blew up and went viral. The band has been on a perpetual rise ever since. The band is now at over 1 million monthly listeners on Spotify!

Porter Howell of Little Texas To Release Debut Singer/Songwriter Album THIS TOWN WAS Nov. 11

Porter Howell, frontman, lead guitarist, principal songwriter and a founding member of multi-Grammy-nominated ’90s country vocal band, Little Texas, is announcing the release of his debut side project as a singer-songwriter, This Town Was, available Nov. 11. Pre-order is available now via ONErpm HERE. Howell will perform at an album release party at 6pm CT Tuesday, Nov. 15 at The Local in Nashville.

After 30 years in the business, it took a pandemic and the ensuing forced downtime from touring to compel Howell to compile this 10-track album of mostly self-penned songs. The title track and accompanying music video were released in April and garnered favorable reviews from Billboard and MusicRow.

“This album was recorded in my basement studio as honestly as possible,” Howell says. “No production tricks necessary—guitars, steel guitar, bass, drums and keys were all tracked with players in the room, the old school way.”

So maybe it’s no surprise that one of the more (humorously) self-reflective album tracks is fittingly titled “Old School”: So, say that I’m old school/Nothin’ but an old fool/That I’m behind the times, afraid to change/Cause in all honesty/I came about it honestly/A pretty cool old fool made me this way.” 

In contrast, an ode to that “old fool,” the mesmeric “I Thought About You Today,” will bring more than a tear to your eye as Howell sings about his father: “I thought about you today/It’s funny how that happens/Think of some old thing we’d say/And I swear I hear you laughing/And I fight back a tear cause life without you here/Is still a little strange.” “I only wish I’d finished this project before he passed away, as I believe it would have been his favorite,” Howell says wistfully, noting that the album reflects his dad’s influence on his musical tastes. 

Similarly nostalgic, anyone who knows Nashville’s history will be drawn to the authenticity of Howell’s heartfelt lyrics on the title track as he soulfully sings about how the town he grew up in professionally has changed so much. “This Town was/Two one-way streets where dreams could find a way to fly…If you look real close, you can almost see a vague outline…It’s where lonely voices dared to bare their hearts and souls/And if you listen close enough, you’ll hear the ghosts ….”

Other songs on the album metaphorically reflect the unpredictability of life (“Church of the Uncertain” and “Lucky to Be Alive”) and love (“Kinda Gone by Then,” “The Way You Were Back Then,” “Who Might Disagree”).

“It’s almost strange to feel this vulnerable by putting something out in the world that is so personal. I just hope everyone enjoys listening to it as much as I enjoyed making it.”
