Rick Wakeman, featuring the vocals of Hayley Sanderson brings an all new show to the U.S. this Summer

In the last five years or so, keyboard maestro, composer and raconteur Rick Wakeman CBE has entertained audiences around the US with his brilliant and witty one-man shows, featuring solo performances of his work with YES, his own compositions and some surprise adaptations of other musicians’ material.

However, in July, his STRICTLY WAKEMAN tour will present a new show unlike any of his previous appearances. For the first time ever, Rick will be joining forces with a female singer – Hayley Sanderson, well-known for her work as one of the leading vocalists on the UK’s Strictly Come Dancing TV show – to present a series of concerts featuring music specially adapted for piano and vocals.

Rick and Hayley have been working together for several years. He accompanied her on her 2009 album, Just Songs, and impressed by her vocal versatility and clarity, subsequently invited her to sing lead vocals on a number of his shows for band (and sometimes, orchestra) in the UK and South America, at prestigious venues like the Royal Albert Hall, the Royal Festival Hall and the O2 Arena. Her awesome vocals also feature on the definitive Live At The London Palladium box set, recorded when Rick led his band through The Six Wives Of Henry VIII, The Myths And Legends Of King Arthur And The Knights Of The Round Table, Journey To The Centre Of The Earth and a set of YES classics, over two magical nights in 2023, and on his studio album, A Gallery Of The Imagination. Rick was also the person to give her the affectionate nickname ‘Strictly’!

Rick Wakeman needs no introduction. His 50-plus year career started as a much-in- demand session pianist and keyboard player, who performed his own arrangements on many classic records by the likes of David Bowie, Cat Stevens and Elton John. After a brief sojourn in the Strawbs, he joined YES and remained a member throughout their most productive period when they became the most successful progressive rock band in the world. After leaving YES, he acquired legendary status by writing and recording groundbreaking concept albums on a grand scale, but is equally at home performing solo on a Steinway grand piano. His record of being the only pianist to have two solo instrumental albums (Piano Portraits and Piano Odyssey) enter the UK charts in the Top 10 on release remains unbroken. While respecting his own musical history, Rick is always looking for ways to refresh, update and extend his legacy. “Hayley is great to work with, as she has the talent to feel the music in such a way as to make all the arrangements seamless,” he comments. “Hayley and I have never worked in concert with just the piano and voice, and so it opens up opportunities for new arrangements of pieces from rare albums, like Make Me A Woman from the Time Machine album, and Julia and The Hymn from 1984.”

Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to witness Rick’s latest creative explorations in the company of Hayley Sanderson!

RICK WAKEMAN THE FINAL SOLO TOUR ADDITIONAL SHOWS ADDED FOR 2025!

Last year, the ultimate keyboard wizard, Rick Wakeman CBE, announced that his 2024 tours of solo piano concerts would be his last. Rick, who has become almost as well-known for his intimate piano shows as his prog rock extravaganzas, had decided that after a career spanning over 50 years, he would be calling a halt to lengthy American one-man show tours, in order to concentrate on composing, recording and collaborating with other musicians.

However, after receiving an offer to take part in the latest of the highly popular Cruise To The Edge, he couldn’t resist adding more dates to include some of the venues he couldn’t fit into his schedule in 2024.

Audiences can expect an evening of highlights from his career with YES and his solo work, including the new 30-minute instrumental work Yessonata, featuring YES themes and melodies, woven into sonata form, which he wrote especially for the Final Solo Tour.

Rick first started establishing a reputation as one of rock’s most original and proficient keyboard players in the late Sixties, when he worked with the likes of David Bowie, Cat Stevens, Marc Bolan, Lou Reed, Al Stewart, Elton John and other artists too numerous to mention, as a much-in-demand session player. He stepped out of the recording studio and into the limelight when he first joined the Strawbs and then YES, helping to make the latter the most successful progressive rock band in the world by contributing to seminal albums such as Fragile and Close To The Edge.

But outside of YES, Rick was really able to unleash his creativity with a series of groundbreaking concept albums: The Six Wives of Henry VIII, Journey to the Centre of the Earth, and The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and theKnights of the Round Table, which have been performed in large-scale shows featuring bands, orchestras and choirs.

However, he is equally at home as a solo artist in the upclose environment of concert halls, performing music on a piano – both his own and tunes that have a special resonance for him - and recounting wickedly funny stories taken from the length of his career. In recent years, he has added a rack of electric keyboards to ring the changes and enable him to enlarge his live solo repertoire.

Don’t miss this final opportunity to enjoy an evening of great music and hilarious stories, delivered by one of the truly legendary figures of rock music.

A STATEMENT FROM RICK:

“I always planned to stop touring by my 77th birthday - for those of you who wish to send me a card, it’s 18th May! - but there is so much to fit in beforethen that I’m having to make plans now and so my final one-man shows will have to cease by that date .

“I have thoroughly enjoyed performing the various one-man shows, but it’s time to call it a day. I intend to throw in the best of what I have done in the past, plus a few new surprises on the way, and possibly even the odd guest joining me on the odd occasion.

“The plan is not to perform at the same venue twice throughout this period, so whatever venue you are hopefully thinking of coming to, it will be the last performance there - and I am taking this opportunity of thanking everyone and anyone who has supported me over the last 53 years!”

RICK WAKEMAN ANNOUNCES THE FINAL SOLO TOUR

AN ALL NEW SHOW FEATURING HIGHLIGHTS FROM HIS CAREER WITH YES AND HIS SOLO WORK, INCLUDING THE PREMIERE OF THE BRAND NEW YESSONATA

RICK WAKEMAN CBE RETURNS TO THE USA WITH A NEW SOLO SHOW

Keyboard wizard Rick Wakeman CBE is pleased to announce that he will be returning to the USA in March and April 2023, with his latest tour, AN EVENING WITH RICK WAKEMAN: HIS MUSIC AND STORIES, starting Wednesday, March 15 in Phoenixville, PA.

“It’s always so enjoyable playing in America,” Wakeman comments. “At every show, I see old friends and hopefully, make new ones.”

Wakeman’s set will consist of music taken from across the wide breadth of his 50-year-plus career, stripped back to its roots in arrangements for grand piano. It will include work from his early days as a session player arranging and performing keyboards on hits like David Bowie’s Life On Mars, through his groundbreaking stint with progressive rock band YES and his own multi-platinum solo albums, plus quirky covers of other acts like The Beatles.

And this glorious display of keyboard virtuosity will be punctuated by hilarious anecdotes and reminiscences of his life. Renowned as much for his irreverent sense of humour as his musical talent, as he himself says, all of Wakeman’s stories contain an element of truth; it’s up to the audience to decide how much!

In a departure from his previous solo tours, as well as playing a grand piano, Wakeman will also be bringing along a few electronic keyboards to add variety and texture to his set. “I’m looking forward to ringing the changes with the addition of keyboards, which is a bit of a departure from my traditional ‘piano shows’, but will give me the opportunity to vary the setlist.”

With over 50 million albums sold in five decades and an enviable reputation as a wit and raconteur, AN EVENING WITH RICK WAKEMAN: HIS MUSIC AND STORIES will be an opportunity to share musical memories and riotous reflections in the company of a true rock legend!

Rock Royalty RICK WAKEMAN Returns to the US with a Solo Show Full of Music and Mirth

RICK WAKEMAN
Returns to the US with a Solo Show Full of Music and Mirth

Keyboard wizard Rick Wakeman has two reasons to celebrate. First, his outstanding career in music has just been recognized by Queen Elizabeth II, who named him a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in her recent annual Birthday Honours.

And secondly, after 18 months of lockdown in the UK, he is finally able to announce the long-delayed follow-up to 2019’s sell-out The Grumpy Old Rock Star Tour with - The Even Grumpier Old Rock Star Tour!

Having made his name creating prog rock extravaganzas, in his solo shows Wakeman returns to his roots with a programme packed with virtuosic piano performances and hilarious anecdotes, inspired by his 50-plus-year career. Repertoire will range from his solo works and his stints in the band YES through to his early days as a session musician playing keyboards on such classics as David Bowie’s Life On Mars, plus surprises like his unique interpretations of Beatles’ hits and many more memorable tunes, adapted for the grand piano. And all of this glorious music is punctuated by riotous reflections on his life and the people he’s met along the way. As he himself often observes, life is rarely dull when Rick Wakeman is around!

The 24-city tour will kick-off on Thursday, October 14th in Derry, NH at the Tupelo Music Hall and continue through November. Tickets go on-sale starting Friday, June 25th, 10am local time. Check Rick Wakeman’s website www.RWCC.com or the theatre’s sites for specific on-sale information.

Professional musician, keyboard player, songwriter, broadcaster and raconteur, Wakeman’s career started as a much-in-demand session player, who performed on recordings by David Bowie, Elton John, Lou Reed, Al Stewart and hundreds more artists. His big break came in 1971 when he joined YES, who went on to become the most successful prog rock band in the world, but Wakeman has also always gone his own way outside the framework of that group.

In the Seventies, he achieved chart-topping success with solo albums such as Journey To The Centre Of The Earth, The Six Wives of Henry VIII and The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, which cumulatively sold over 10,000,000 copies in North America alone.

He has written several film scores, amongst them two for director Ken Russell (Lisztomania and Crimes of Passion) and two ‘Harry Palmer’ movies starring Michael Caine (Bullet To Beijing and Midnight in St Petersburg), and in the UK, has built up an impressive reputation as a witty guest and host on shows like Grumpy Old Men, Countdown, Watchdog and the comedy cabaret show Live at Jongleurs. His wickedly irreverent acceptance speech when YES was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017 nearly brought the house down!

That same year, he made British chart history when his Piano Portraits record became the first solo piano instrumental album to enter the UK’s Top 10 on release – a feat he then repeated 2018's Piano Odyssey. Both records feature tunes that have a special connection with Rick’s personal musical journey and his subsequent tours, in which he performs a selection of tracks accompanied by hilarious memories and anecdotes have been instant sell-outs in the UK.

Now the achievements of his incredible career have been officially recognized with a CBE in recognition of his services to music, so come and celebrate with him on his forthcoming tour. And don’t worry – Rick will still find plenty of reasons to be grumpy…
