Miranda Lambert Debuts "Wranglers" at Stagecoach; New Music Coming

For Miranda Lambert, who values music above all, her triumphant set at Stagecoach on Saturday night was one big celebration, complete with Reba surprising the crowd for a three-song finale that included "Mama's Broken Heart," "Fancy" and "Gunpowder & Lead." Having wrapped her 48-date Las Vegas residency, the show put her back amongst hardcore fans. It was also the celebration of both her new record deal with Republic Records and getting serious about her Big Loud Texas label.

Given Lambert’s penchant for bringing the fans into her newest music, the three-time Grammy winner and most-awarded artist in Academy of Country Music history thought the polo grounds in the California desert was the perfect place to debut her newest creation. Recorded in Austin, Texas with frequent collaborator and co-producer Jon Randall, “Wranglers” is a hard-won freedom song for a woman reckoning with a man who just doesn’t value what he’s got.

Written by Audra Mae, who sings on the track, Evan McKeever, and Ryan Carpenter, “Wranglers” opens with a tangle of brittle, incendiary guitars from Jedd Hughes and Ethan Ballinger as ambient organ steam from Austin legend Bukka Allen rises. The rhythm section works a foreboding reality: Rachel Loy’s bass lumbers across Conrad Choucroun’s sticks-on-the-rims drum part and Lambert’s siren’s cry cuts through the mix. Heavy, but not gratuitous, there’s a foreboding to the track that pulls you in, a tension that holds the listener as Lambert half coos, half sings the kind of song that has defined her career, “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned/ When the knock down drag out’s over/ And Lord knows she took one too many...”

When Lambert dropped the Crazy Horse-evoking track on the sold-out Saturday night Stagecoach crowd, the yowls and howls were pronounced as the entire crowd swayed. Fists in the air, it may have been unfamiliar, but they were hanging on every word and riding the drama like any of Lambert’s taking care of business anthems.

“‘Wranglers’ is a classic tale of a woman taking her power back,” Lambert says of the sizzling post-Outlaw classic. “I think we can all identify with the character in this song, because we have all had a time in our life where we needed to find our strength, and also get a little revenge on someone who did us wrong or hurt us. This offers such a cool, raging take on how something like this unravels. I think the songwriters nailed it.

“I am so proud to sing it. It feels like it could have been on the same record as ‘Gunpowder & Lead’ in a lot of ways. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned is a pretty powerful statement, and the way it’s written, you can tell, we’re not kidding.”

For Lambert, who's spent the last few years stretching her creative muscles with the Wanda June Home line, the New York Times’ best-seller "Y'all Eat Yet?", her Vegas residency and launching a new label dedicated to protecting young talent from her home state from the over-homogenization of major label life, “Wranglers” in some ways represents burning down the past and making a run for all things you truly want. Certainly making music in new ways, including taking her high octane kick-ass country back to Texas to capture that energy on the recording studio floor.

“People don’t always know what it is, they just know they want some more,” she marvels. “It’s not that it’s so fancy or top secret, because it’s about as basic as you get. But that’s the magic: to strip things down like this and still create something new? Less is more, but it forces you to turn up the truth. So, get ready.”

“Wranglers” is available everywhere May 3.

Oakland alt-rock / metal project OTHERED presents debut single 'Journey To The Edge'

"High-octane sonic goodness - pure energy and all power with vividly clear rock and metal sensibility... Musically and lyrically cohesive, this music is empowering" ~ Amplify Music Magazine

Oakland-based duo Othered present their hard-hitting debut single 'Journey To The Edge', a heavy rock / metal anthem replete with signs of our times. On April 15, the duo will be releasing their full eponymous album on limited edition vinyl and digitally.

Othered is a collaborative recording project by Henry Austin Lannan and Emily Palen (a.k.a. Knightress M1). Based in the San Francisco Bay Are, this powerhouse project also weaves doom, metal and psychedelic prog--rock throughout their music

'Othered Vol. 1' was born out of sheer necessity to create amidst a complete disruption to normality as a result of the 2020 pandemic and lockdowns. Lyrically, the album is a call for independent thought, soul maintenance and critical discernment in a time when a war on human consciousness is being waged.

"This song is the conclusion to the thesis that humans are powerful and beautiful beyond measure. We each hold transmutational power and when we step back into our personal truth and unique expression, we access that power. There is a lot of conscious information coming through lit up humans on the planet right now and this song is my way of funneling the conscious information that comes through me," says Emily Palen.

"All of us contain irreplaceable love and we forget that in the midst of this cruel culture that is being developed around us. When we remember our humanity, the pulse in our hearts, the dreams in our soul, the beauty of the images we see at twilight, we will know that was is ours, can never truly be taken. The lies will fall away, the distortions will be clear as day and we will see what must be done."

Henry Austin Lannan and Emily Palen met by chance through Specimen Box, Lannan's collaborative music project with Larry Boothroyd (Jello Biafra and GSM, Victim's Family, Triclops!). Upon hearing one of Austin's demos, Larry introduced him to Emily, who created a vocal composition that led to this fruitful collaboration, based on songs written in the midst of the 2020 lockdown.

After recording numerous demos at Austin's home studio, they eventually recorded this long-player at El Studio in San Francisco with Phil Becker (drummer of Triclops!, Terry Gross, Pins of Light and Lower Forty-Eight) serving as producer and engineer.

"2020 was a fucked up year. A profound sense of isolation permeated daily life along with rampant fear and a consistent general feeling of unease. The sounds, words and tone of this record are both inspired by those negative emotions and an attempt to counter the despair and hopelessness many of us felt throughout the year," says Henry Austin Landan.

On April 15, 'Othered Vol. 1' will be released digitally across online platforms and also available as a limited edition of gold-colored vinyl. Only 150 copies are being pressed with heavy-weight gloss stock jacket and black card stock insert printed in silver and gold ink. The album can be ordered directly from the artist via Bandcamp.

That same evening, Othered will host their official record release show at Eli's Mile High Club in Oakland, at which Nudity and Very Paranoia will also be performing.

"THE BEAST AWAKENS" DUE FEBRUARY 12, 2021

FIRST SINGLE, 'KINGS BEFORE YOU' FT. CHRIS JERICHO & PHIL DEMMEL OUT NOW

Hailing from the shores of Santa Cruz, CA, USA, modern heavy metal revivalist James Durbin is on the verge of releasing his boldest, heaviest album to date with the announcement of the debut album from DURBIN, “The Beast Awakens”. Coming February 12, 2021 via Frontiers Music Srl, fans can get their first taste of the album with the release of the single 'Kings Before You' featuring Chris Jericho (Fozzy) and Phil Demmel (ex-Machine Head, Vio-lence). Listen to the song on your favorite streaming platform or on YouTube.

James Durbin is finally releasing the album he has always wanted to over the course of his decade long recording career. Combining his love of all things DIO, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest, Durbin set out to craft his own signature strain of fantasy inspired power metal for his debut Durbin album, "The Beast Awakens".

“I’ve found a home for my creativity with Frontiers. They really share my vision for the type of metal I wish to create and we’re all excited to see where it will lead,” says Durbin.

'Kings Before You,' the first single released from Durbin’s forthcoming album, features guest vocals from Fozzy vocalist (and AEW Wrestling star) Chris Jericho and renowned guitar wizard Phil Demmel (BPMD, ex-Machine Head). For each of the solo sections on the remainder of the album tracks, Durbin called upon his own axe wielding brethren to help out. Jon Yadon Jr., Marc Putnam, Dylan Rose, and Nick Gallant all contributed guitar solos for the album. Due to the situation with COVID-19, the album was recorded largely remotely, with only Durbin himself, alongside his producer Ellison, occupying the recording studio. Durbin says, “the fact that the album sounds the way it does, with the way it was recorded, is a testament to the passion of everyone involved. I am very grateful for all the love and care that was given to my songs and I can’t wait to unleash my metal upon the world.”

All the songs included on “The Beast Awakens” were written solely by Durbin himself. “2020 has been such a strange year for all of us. Coincidentally, our shelter in place order happened just as I had begun writing for the album. It really forced me to write by myself and not rely on others to write the riffs for me. And then to write the lyrics and melodies too,” tells Durbin.

Once the songs were written and demoed by Durbin, he brought in the rhythm section of virtuoso drummer Mike Vanderhule (Y&T) and master bassist Barry Sparks (Ted Nugent, Scorpions, Dokken, B’z). With Durbin handling the album’s rhythm guitars, his core lineup was complete.

James Durbin is an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist from Santa Cruz, California. Many associate his name with his appearance on Season 10 of American Idol (2011), where he was unabashedly flying the flag for heavy metal. In fact, on the finale, he appeared with undisputed metal gods Judas Priest for rousing renditions of "Livin' After Midnight" and "Breaking the Law" and also appeared with legendary guitarist Zakk Wylde. This was followed by Durbin’s debut album, 2011’s “Memories Of A Beautiful Disaster” that blended a mix of hard hitting riffs, vulnerable lyrics, and Durbin’s signature scream. James has also worked and performed alongside many incredible musicians including Stevie Wonder, Don Was, Sheryl Crow, Tom Jones, Mick Mars of Mötley Crüe, Bob Babbitt of The Funk Brothers, and Steel Panther, just to name a few.

Durbin’s signature vocal prowess and powerful stage presence have earned him stamps of approval and praise from rock and metal royalty like Steven Tyler, Sammy Hagar, Rob Halford, and more. He has four full length albums to his name, in addition to lending his voice to a handful of various albums.

James Durbin is an artist on the rise and a performer you don't want to miss. Expect his debut record under the name "Durbin" in early 2021. Fans of heavy metal revivalists like Haunt, Eternal Champion, Sumerlands, Enforcer, and the like, as well as hard rock and classic heavy metal fans in general are in for a treat!

Lineup:

James Durbin - Vocals. Rhythm Guitars

Jon Yadon Jr., Marc Putnam, Dylan Rose, & Nick Gallant - Guitars

Barry Sparks - Bass

Mike Vanderhule - Drums
