MÖRK GRYNING Shares New Song, "A Glimpse of the Sky"

Legendary Swedish black metal formation MÖRK GRYNING has shared "A Glimpse of the Sky," the second new single from their upcoming album, 'Hinsides Vrede.' The offering is the band's first new full-length since 2005 and will be released on October 23 via Season of Mist, making it their debut to the label.

Pre-sales for ‘Hinsides Vrede’ are available HERE.

The band comments, "This is our homage to Bathory - the 'Blood Fire Death' era. It's got a steady groove in contrast to most of the other songs on the album. The lyrics will speak for themselves: 'Ripped apart / Our hearts are fed to the vultures / The soil has been cursed / Our souls like silent statues of stone.'"

After fifteen years of slumber, Swedish black metal cult MÖRK GRYNING have awakened to unleash their fury upon the masses with their deadly new album Hinsides Vrede. Translating into “otherworldly wrath” or “wrath of the world beyond,” Hinsides Vrede represents the impending doom of a world coming undone at its seams. The quintet temper their deathly assault with their signature melodic edge, and with recall the halcyon days of Swedish extremity. The comeback of MÖRK GRYNING is complete, and Hinsides Vrede opens up a deadly new chapter in their evolving legacy.

Founded in 1993 in Stockholm, MÖRK GRYNING were among the incipient purveyors of the melodic black and death metal scene. In May 1995, founding members Goth Gorgon and Draakh Khimera entered the Unisound Studios to record their now legendary debut album Tusen År Har Gått, produced by legend Dan Swanö (OPETH , DARK FUNERAL, DISSECTION , etc.) The haunting and melodic offering quickly gained attention among the cult of the underground, solidying their place among black metal’s clandestine elite.

The arrival of guitarist Avathar in 1999 further defined the band’s sound, adding further dimension with icy solos. The three-piece later traveled to famous Grieghallen Studios in Bergen, Norway to finish their third full-length, Maelstrom Chaos, which produced by Pytten (MAYHEM, BURZUM, EMPEROR).

In early 2003, MÖRK GRYNING entered the Dug Out Studio (MESHUGGAH, DEVIN TOWNSEND, IN FLAMES, DARK FUNERAL) with producers David Bergstrand and Örjan Örnkloo. Never shy to reinvent themselves, the aptly titled Pieces of Primal Expressionism reshaped the band entirely. The record put forth a daring grandiosity of dissonant harmony that had previously been unexplored in MÖRK GRYNING’s prior efforts.

By the time of the release of the band’s self-titled full-length in 2005, MÖRK GRYNING seemingly disbanded for good. Fans likely did not expect a second act after the band’s grand finale, however, the flames of chaos were reignited in 2017 when the band performed a rare and long-overdue anniversary set at Party San Open Air. Following appearances across Europe on the festival circuit, founding members Goth Gorgon, Draakh Kimera and Avatar reunited for real and MÖRK GRYNING signed a new deal with Season of Mist.

With Hinsides VredeMÖRK GRYNING have rediscovered the synergy they had while writing their legendary debut record and have returned to their foundations. Yet, by striving to reinvent themselves with every record, the long-awaited comeback of the band is by no means a reiteration of a glorious musical past, but is still certain to appease both old and new fans alike.

This year’s annual in-person edition (COLD WAVES IX) had originally been scheduled to take place at the legendary Metro Chicago this month with headlining sets from Front 242, Stabbing Westward and My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, but had to be postponed due to ongoing health concerns, venue capacities and international travel issues as a result of COVID-19. It has since been rescheduled for September 24-26, 2021 with a to be announced lineup.

Founder Jason Novak wanted to resurrect the fan favorite weekend in this virtual model and says, “Regardless of the current struggles our industry family and friends are enduring, we realize how much COLD WAVES means to so many people every September, since Jamie Duffy’s passing in 2012 that inspired it all. We felt the need to do something, anything, to try and connect this passionate fan base during our ‘lost weekend,’ and we are grateful to the artists who contributed in such a dark time. Hopefully there is enough goodwill and gas in the tank left to generate some fundraising revenue for the Metro staff and Darkest Before Dawn, as we all continue to fight to save our industry.”

A donation button will also be available throughout the streaming activities for those that wish to donate further.

About COLD WAVES

COLD WAVES is a celebration of Chicago’s relationship with industrial music, the memory of a fallen brother, and a fundraiser for suicide prevention charities. In the summer of 2012, Chicago lost one of its most loved and respected sound engineers and musicians, Jamie Duffy. His work ethic and ingenuity in the local music scene was a gift to many musicians. His abrupt passing had a profound effect on the electronic and metal music families he meant so much to.

In need of healing and hope, COLD WAVES brought 14 bands together for one magical night that year to raise money for Jamie’s family and say goodbye. But in the end, it was more of an awakening... a rebirth... a breaking wave. The success of the show pushed the team to build it into an annual event, stretching over a weekend and moving it to Chicago's iconic Metro.

COLD WAVES aims to shake the pillars of heaven by collecting the bands, styles, sounds and attitudes that Jamie held dear, and cement the sound of a Chicago institution alive and well. From Wax Trax! and Medusas to Uncle Al and Chicago Trax, this is our history and our future, the melding of man, woman and machine, the sound of melody, muscle and hate, basking in the glow of attack ships on fire down the shores of Pluto.

The Third Track Preview From New Album Vredesvävd

Out September 18 Through Century Media Records,

The Finnish Folk Metal Act’s First Release In 7 Years

Following riotous singles “Ormfolk” and “Forsen,” Finnish folk metal act FINNTROLL present the third preview from their upcoming album Vredesvävd with the new track “Mask,” released today.

Says the band of the song: "The worms of timeless cold have awoken. Mouths as dry as the forest bathed in false light for too long, hungering for blood. Shedding the moss off their pale skin they begin to gather outside their cave, ignoring the sun burning their scaly eyes. They stretch their limbs one last time, knowing that tonight they will feast either in the halls of Rivfader, or on the corpses of the human usurpers. Let the litanies of evil, hatred and murder begin!"

“Mask” appears on FINNTROLL’s seventh studio album Vredesvävd that will be released on September 18 through Century Media Records. Translating to “Wrath-woven,” it aptly implies what the vigorous, unapologetic and ill-spirited record is all about.

Album "While Time Disappears" Coming Fall 2020

We're excited to announce that Dutch rock trio Our Oceans have signed an international record deal with Long Branch Records for the release of their new album "While Time Disappears" coming Fall 2020. The song "Unravel" is the first single off the new album and available now at all streaming platforms.

Listen to "Unravel" here: https://ouroceans.lnk.to/whiletimedisappears

Our Oceans is formed by singer & guitarist Tymon Kruidenier (Cynic, Exivious). Joining him on bass and drums are his former Exivious colleagues, Robin Zielhorst (Cynic, Onegodless) and Yuma van Eekelen (Quadvium, Pestilence).

Singer & guitarist Tymon Kruidenier about the new single "Unravel":

"Unravel is probably one of the more unique songs on the album, with its uptempo vibe and many ups and downs. It’s about recognizing and breaking down the plethora of coping mechanisms we tend to build into our sense of self over the course of our lives. It’s a song about rediscovering who you are underneath it all. It was the first song we wrote for the new album and it was obvious from the very beginning that this had to be the opening track on the album as well as the first single release."

Haunting vocal melodies carrying heartfelt cries of longing, anger and despair. Bolstered by lyrical fretless bass lines, vigorous drum beats and captivating guitar riffs, Our Oceanslaces singer/songwriter influences with modern, progressive rock elements. Weaving mindful musicianship and introspective lyrics into a deeply melancholic, yet uniquely expansive musical universe.

Line Up:

Tymon Kruidenier - vocals & guitars

Robin Zielhorst - bass & vocals

Yuma van Eekelen - drums

SÓLSTAFIR Shares Visualizer for Haunting New Song, "Drysill"

SÓLSTAFIR's new song "Drýsill" is taken from the band's upcoming record 'Endless Twilight of Codependent Love'. "Drýsill" (Icelandic for demon) is about figh...

Iceland rock giants SÓLSTAFIR have unveiled their emotional new song, "Drýsill," along with a  haunting visualizer. The song and accompanying clip,  which was directed/created by Kim Holm and animated by David Hall, give an introspective look at the horrors of domestic violence.

Drýsill is taken from SÓLSTAFIR's seventh studio album, 'Endless Twilight of Codependent Love,' which is due on November 6 via Season of Mist! Pre-order 'Endless Twilight of Codependent Love' HERE.

"'Drýsill,' in Icelandic, means demon," explains lyricist and drummer Hallgrímur Jón Hallgrimsson.

"This is the story of a woman who fell for someone who promised her the world with his smile. She fell captive to his mind games. His intentions were riddled with evil as he fed off of her love. Her humanity disappears as he gains power by mentally and physically torturing her, keeping her locked away in a prison of her own mind. The video illustrates her personal journey through hell as she spirals further into the darkness of captivity until what feels like the end. But one day she is able to gather her strength and use the rest of her power towards the dark to fight her way back into the light. As she kills him with the very shovel he was going to use to bury her with, he is still smiling at her. Laughing at her. Mocking her.

"This song is about fighting the demons that you allow to control your mind, and breaking free. It’s about rescuing yourself and finding the strength and the courage to be victorious, no matter how hurt you’ve been.

"We were excited to work with Kim Holm (Svartir Sandar album artwork) on this one as we felt he could perfectly capture the dark feelings of despair represented in this story with his art."

Director Kim Holm adds, "Depression is a deep dark demon filled cave that I've spent too much of my life in, and as I started finding visuals for Sólstafir's hauntingly brilliant Drýsill, life and art seemed to mix in terrible new ways. The lyrics deal with themes of death and abuse that I’ve luckily been spared, but the journey through the underworld seemed to metaphorically mirror each day working on it. I like to believe there’s a light at the end of the tunnel, but realistically it’s not so for everyone. Drýsill is a statement that for some, there should be no light. Only the end."

'Endless Twilight of Codependent Love' was recorded at the Sundlaugin Studio (Iceland), where 'Svartir Sandar,' 'Ótta' and 'Berdreyminn' were also recorded by producer Birgir Jón Birgisson (Sigur Rós, Alcest, Damien Rice).

A quarter of a century after singer/guitarist Aðalbjörn "Addi" Tryggvason co-founded atmospheric Icelandic metal quartet Sólstafir, they continue to follow their cardinal rule – that there are no rules. For them, writing an epic 10-minute song without a traditional verse/chorus trade-off feels natural. While they have done two albums in English, he mainly sings in their native tongue and his vocals are as much an instrument as a vessel for words. Their videos equally showcase the band and their Icelandic world that they commune with.

And their music flows however it pleases. “Having been a metal band for a long time and gone through shoegaze, atmospheric black metal, and post rock, I just feel privileged being able to mix all my favorite genres and get away with it,” says Tryggvason.

In the world of Sólstafir, artists as varied as The Beatles, Kraftwerk, Darkthrone, Ennio Morricone, and Billy Corgan swirl inside their heads, and such influences seep into their musical ether.

Painted in watercolor by Johann Baptist Zwecker in 1864, The Lady of the Mountain is the female personification of Iceland. It was first published in a book of Icelandic folk tales but was never shown in public. A black and white woodblock replica by the artist is what Icelanders have known until recently when two citizens found the original hidden in a Welsh museum gallery where it had been in storage for a century. Now it is back home and adorning the cover of the new Sólstafir album.

“Everybody knows the image of the Lady of the Mountain,” declares Tryggvason. “It's like Marianne to the French and Minerva in Roman mythology. All of a sudden, the original pops up and it’s like, ‘Oh my god, these are the most beautiful colors I've ever seen. And why does it remind me of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness?’ So that's purely accidental. When we saw this photo, we had to use it. It's too beautiful.”

While early Sólstafir lyrics delved into Nordic mythology and critiques of organized religion, more recent songs explore their spiritual connection with nature, and lately, mental disorders ranging from depression to alcoholism and the taboo behind men in particular discussing those things for fear of being perceived weak.

“That’s the real darkness that you can't see, but you can feel it and people around you can feel it,” explains Tryggvason. “Of course, there are serial killers and plagues and whatever through history. But in modern day life, that's the true darkness around you. People kill themselves every day, and often people close to you who have been feeling so bad.”

The frontman says that band members have each had their personal struggles to deal with. They collectively became sober back in 2013. “Anyone in this band can talk about his depression or their state of mind during the day,” says Tryggvason. “It's an open, free dialogue in this band, so it's very healthy.

He says the most personal song on Endless Twilight of Codependent Love is “Her Fall From Grace,” the lone track in English. It chronicles the pain of watching a loved one succumb to mental illness.
“It's very sad when you love someone and you see them get sick,” muses Tryggvason. “Like Layne Staley said, ‘Slow suicide is no way to go.’ But you’re just watching on the audience bench, preparing for the phone call. ‘Hey man, Johnny's dead.’ ‘All right, I knew Johnny was gonna die. I've been watching him in slow motion.’” He likens the experience to seeing a relative or parent be consumed by Alzheimer’s and turn into a different person than one remembers.

Although the band’s lyrics are predominately in Icelandic, that does not prevent outside listeners from appreciating the emotional power of their music. It has been said that many fans can feel his pain even if they do not overtly understand what he is singing about.

A beautiful moment in that regard occurred when Sólstafir played Bogota, Colombia in September 2017. It was the smallest show on their South American tour, and they presumed it would not be as lively. The 300 strong throng proved them wrong. “It felt like I was in Queen at Wembley Stadium,” Tryggvason recollects fondly. “They sang every goddamn word in Icelandic. How can you explain that?”

Such passionate reactions have not gone unnoticed in their homeland. Iceland picked Sólstafir to play a total of six events New York City, Seattle, and Toronto last fall called “Taste Of Iceland.” Tryggvason says the band enjoyed the event and their intimate industry showcases at Pianos (NYC) and Livenation (Toronto) during that same trip.

Counter-intuitive thinking has helped Sólstafir evolve and mature. The new track “Or” opens with a languid, bluesy feeling but gradually transforms into an angst-ridden, guitar-driven dirge. When they conjured their breakthrough song “Fjara” in 2011, the group feared its mellow nature might put off their longtime metal followers. Instead, they embraced it. That tune, along with the ambient, banjo-laden track “Ótta,” allowed the group to play both the Brutal Assault festival in the Czech Republic five years ago and then a family-friendly music event in the Netherlands the next weekend. The new rager “Dionysus” even features a return to their black metal roots that was not planned; the song just turned out that way over a year-long span.

“Our audience grew bigger and more diverse by us just being ourselves and doing nothing different really,” notes Tryggvason.

One of the joys for him and his bandmates – bassist Svavar "Svabbi" Austmann, guitarist Sæþór Maríus "Pjúddi" Sæþórsson, and newer drummer Hallgrímur Jón "Grimsi" Hallgrímsson, who contributed some lyrics this time out – is that their perception of how their new music will turn out never corresponds with reality. It is that unknown factor that keeps things exciting.

You can never foresee band magic,” declares Tryggvason. “The whole purpose of this is cooking up magic. And if you're cooking up magic with four or five weirdos, you can never foresee what's going to happen. You can't buy that. You have to live it or grow it.”

Swedish metal band TRUMBITEN released their first original metal song titled "Fear Me" today to all digital outlets.

Our first original single that was released Sept 3rd. Lyric Video by Tommy Arngren Lyrics by Tommy Vocals by Nya Campos Cruz Music by Evan Rodaniche & Adam A...

The song was produced by Los Angeles producer Evan Rodaniche (Cage9) and features Nya Campos Cruz of Portuguese band Kandia on vocals.

"Fear Me" Download/Stream link: https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/trumbiten/fear-me

“It’s really awesome that social media, gig-platforms, digital tools and communication tools enable musicians to connect and to create music together in this way” says Tommy Arngren.

He adds, "This song is a result from a great collaboration between musicians, who have never met face-2-face, from Sweden, Los Angeles and Portugal. Trumbiten had a plan to release an original song early next year, but the lyrics and the music idea started to form early June 2020 and two months later we were ready to plan for an upcoming release. It was so cool and inspiring to finalize the song in collaboration with Nya and Evan. Really amazing!!"

Trumbiten is a father and son metal duo from the northern part of Sweden that started in 2018.

Tommy Arngren is the band’s producer and drummer while his son, Adam, plays all of the string instruments.

Their music is primarily within the Metal/hardrock genre with melodic guitar tracks, heavy bass and strong drum beats. The band enjoys working with professional musicians that inspire and compliment the original duo, such as the collaboration with the singer in the Portuguese band Kandia.

In early 2019, the band started a YouTube-channel where they publish instrumental metal covers and in early 2020 the band released its first cover on Spotify and other music streaming services.

New Album, Vanitas, to be Released on

October 2 via Napalm Records

Pre-Order NOW

“Why should we care

as long as we’re happy

we listen to his melody

we ain’t deaf but blind”

Today, German dark metal torchbearers NACHTBLUT unveil the second single “Leierkinder”(engl. Children Of The Lyre) along with an official video, off their upcoming full-length, Vanitas, to be released on October 2 via Napalm Records.

Starting off with an intoxicating, folk-influenced melody and an addictive rhythm, the new single carries its listener to days of yore, while the dark lyrics create a cynical contrast that shapes the overall ambience. Lyrically, the song refers to a fictional village reigned by a god who dictates the citizen’s state of knowledge. Paired with the fleet-footed, folky main melody and Askeroth’s gloomy, invading vocals, the new single “Leierkinder” sends frightening shivers straight to everyone’s core!

NACHTBLUT on their new single:

“We are more than proud to present our new song "Leierkinder": the catchy melody and chorus features a driving force, that will cause a lot of energy in front and on stage. But there is more than just a happy melody, as the lyrics come with a deeper meaning. It’s about how you define happiness referred to your personal surroundings and experience. Another issue concerns our understanding of satisfaction and our perception of things, which is also controlled by significant outside influences.  Maybe you will take a pause and think about this... or not, but “jeder muss nach dem Liede tanzen, das gerade auf der Walze steht” (engl.: “everyone needs to dance to the tune on the roller”)“

A dark work of art between transience and infinity.

The new album Vanitas draws the listener into the band’s musical maelstrom in a classifying NACHTBLUT manner: hard riffs, Askeroth’s incisive vocals, rousing melodies and profound, candid lyrics.

Songs like “Die Toten vergessen nicht” (engl. The Dead Don’t Forget) shine with an unmistakably dark and orchestral sound that will cause shivers to run down the listener’s spine, while the folk-influenced song “Leierkinder” (engl. Children Of The Lyre) convinces with an addictive rhythms and moving lyrics. With Vanitas, dark metal giants NACHTBLUT create a symbolic work of art somewhere between transience and infinity.

“It’s always pretty unbelievable to watch something like a crowdfund happen. We are so thankful for the fans that we have and hope that everyone enjoys this wild and ridiculous release”, commented vocalist, Sabrina Cruz.

Dictionary.com defines a Goat Rodeo as "a slang term for something going totally, unbelievably, disastrously wrong, and there’s nothing left to do but to sit back and watch the trainwreck."

Due to how the pandemic has hit the music industry, as a band, we had to make some serious changes to our release and touring schedule. We wanted to push something new a little sooner than later, and make something that is representative of the 'Goat Rodeo' that 2020 is. We have recorded a stand alone Single, a Short Film and also an 8 Episode Documentary for immediate release as goals are met in our Crowdfunding Campaign. ’The Great Goat Rodeo’ is a fun idea we have had for a very long time, and it’s designed to give people a little comic relief in these uncertain times. We will immediately begin work on our next EP while this rolls out. Take a look at our Campaign for more information on the Project!

TOMBS Reveals New Album Details, Premieres First Single

Subscribe to Season Of Mist for new releases : https://som.lnk.to/YouTube Taken from the album 'Under Sullen Skies'. Release Date: November 20, 2020. Order h...

Brooklyn metal formation TOMBS will be releasing their new studio album 'Under Sullen Skies' on November 20 via Season of Mist. The tracklist and cover art can be found below. In conjunction with the announcement, the band is now sharing the devastating first single, "Barren,"

Pre-orders for 'Under Sullen Skies' available in the Season of Mist shop HERE.

There’s a line from Mike Hill’s audiobook/tour diary of ANODYNE’s 2004 European tour in which the gravel-throated frontman affirms, “I will always outwork you.” In that case, Hill was referring to an incident in Germany early on during a six-week long overseas jaunt with his previous band. In actuality, however, he could have been talking about any instance between when he first picked up a guitar as a teen and the present. Whether it’s his history dating back to previous bands OTIS, ANODYNE, KING GENERATOR or VERSOMA, his ongoing solo work in VASILEK, the more recent SCORPION THRONE  project or his thirteen year reign as the driving force and nerve center of post-black metal institution TOMBS, hard work is second nature and nothing will keep the guitarist/vocalist from creative endeavor and expression. And it’s not just music in which his propulsive work ethic has gleaned results: Hill also is the CEO and roast master at Savage Gold Coffee (a labelling nod to TOMBS’ 2014 album of the same name), the host/producer/creator of the Everything Went Black podcast, host and producer of Gimme Radio’s Metal Matters flagship podcast, the creator and co-host of horror podcast Necromaniacs as well as a stalwart in the print and online journalism world covering music and MMA fighting. His is, has been and always will be a life steeped in dedication and with unassailable drive in the cross hairs. And despite the world being put on pause, Hill refuses to curtail his innate determination and ongoing tenacity with the result being TOMBS emerging with the next chapter in its impressive catalog and growing legacy: the band’s fifth full-length, 'Under Sullen Skies'.

“The week VERSOMA broke up in 2007, I started TOMBS,” he says, recalling how, characteristically, the band started before any dust was permitted to settle. “The initial rehearsals ended up being the bulk of material that showed up on the first [self-titled] EP. The intent from the beginning was to get back to playing music I wanted to hear and to not be so concerned with genre or satisfying anyone else’s desires. It was to do music on a personal level and be a reflection of the darkness I’ve felt throughout my life.”

Formed in the gritty corners of pre-gentrified Brooklyn, NY, TOMBS’ early mandate was steeped in the harshness and atonality of black metal but dosed with trace amounts of the varied influences and inspirations ingrained in Hill’s musical muscle memory by previous bands. “The canon of music TOMBS has created has spanned several different genres, but I’ve always had it my intent for there to always be a certain amount of violence and hardness lurking the background.”

Those early years delivered splits and singles, the highly revered 'Winter Hours' debut in 2009 and Decibel’s 2011 Album of the Year, 'Path of Totality'. Never one to sit still, 'Path of Totality' was followed by appreciable and impressive amounts of touring in accordance with the lauding afforded by critics and fans and the braying of foes, which only served as fuel for Hill’s perseverance. Savage Gold came three years later after which a restless Hill began nudging TOMBS’ black metal base into territories populated by gothic and death rock artists like FIELDS OF THE NEPHILIM and SISTERS OF MERCY as well as avant-garde purveyors Caspar Brotzmann and Live Skull while never forgetting – or being able to – scrape the grime of NYC from under his fingernails. The addition of a second guitar and live keyboards/samples brought a fuller sound and allowed noise sequences and soundscapes to be brought to the live show. It was around the time of 2016 'All Empires Fall' EP that TOMBS punctuated its iconoclastic spirit and thought process. Despite then-being part of the Relapse Records family, the band struck out with the intent of self-releasing the EP in order to retain as much independence as contractual obligations would allow – retaining the digital and publishing rights while eventually licensing the record back to Relapse. A one album stint in 2017 under the Metal Blade banner birthed 'The Grand Annihilation' into the world where TOMBS took broader and more daring steps into buffering black metal with morose melody, sullen death rock and classic METALLICA chugging. Following a parting from Metal Blade, the band – now completed by drummer Justin Spaeth, guitarist Matt Medeiros and bassist Drew Murphy, who are also 3/4ths of New Jersey death metal crew KALOPSIA - quickly found a home on Season of Mist and issued the 'Monarchy of Shadows' EP literally a week before the world went into Coronavirus lockdown.

“The original strategy assumed we would be on the road for most of 2020,” says Hill with a lamenting laugh. “We had a sick tour with Napalm Death planned right after the EP’s release. We were going to record the new full-length before the tour and have it come out in the fall. There was all kinds of tour talk and plans and 2020 would have been a tour-de-force of TOMBSactivity in the United States and Europe. Obviously, none of that is happening, but we’re still going ahead with the record.”

Of course they are. Throw a hurdle in front of Mike Hill and he’ll never shy at rolling up his sleeves and taking on the challenge. Even with the world in shutdown mode, Hill is still brimming with enthusiasm about the input and work ethic of the current TOMBS lineup and how Spaeth, Mederios and Murphy stepped up to the plate in the creation of 'Under Sullen Skies'.

“Everyone contributes on this record and the door has always been open for others to do so. There has always been this misconception that I’m some sort of tyrant always telling people what to do and play. The fact of the matter is that most of the time I outwork people; that’s just the way I am. No one is ever going to outwork me on any level in any area of my life and I was always coming up with material. Now, I have these maniacs in the band who are equally motivated and there’s a whole new life injected into TOMBS. That’s awesome and I love it. These days we’ll try anything and we actually write stuff and throw it out because it’s not perfect. It’s more like a writing committee, which I really appreciate. It’s not just me writing everything. It’s a big difference from 'The Grand Annihilation' which was basically a solo record.”

'Under Sullen Skies' is this lineup’s second kick at twisting black metal’s DNA around dank emotional corners, psychological turmoil and the urban underbelly all of which is unavoidably coloured and touched by the present-day status of life on this here Earth.

“The album’s title came during all this and the sort of post-apocalyptic world we’re living in,” Hill explains. “It encapsulates an overall feeling of gloom and depression which is pretty much how we’ve been living for most of this year. The title was the last piece to fall into place. I remember standing on the roof of the building I was living in at the time on a grey day and it was raining – actually, it wasn’t even raining; it was a half-assed attempt at rain! – and depressing and I just thought, ‘What a sullen sky’ and it just stuck with me.”

The album starts with “Bone Collector,” a furious blast of melodic black metal that shifts gears towards an anthemic fist-pumping slog through the goth rock-thrash metal VENN DIAGRAM. “Void Constellation” takes as many cues from Peaceville Three gloom and doom as it does the death metal stomp of OBITUARY and INCANTATION. “Descensum” mines the various well-worn parts of Ride the Lightning for influence before blasting the doors open with some startlingly spacious chromatic single-note atonality. As the album progresses, further textures and moods are employed via acoustic instrumentation and keyboards as well as sampled soundscapes all butting heads with furious second wave black metal and sly to nods to death rock heroes SISTERS OF MERCY and FIELDS OF THE NEPHILIM, all of the band’s motivations and interests being dropped into the chameleonic pair of tracks closing the album, “Sombre Ruin” and the appropriately titled “Plague Years.”

“‘Barren’ stands out as the song that’s most collaborative,” notes Hill. “Justin wrote the bulk of the riffs on that one, that sort of NWOBHM/SCORPIONS ending part is something I came up with, Matt added a bunch of guitar harmonies over it and Drew’s bass is laid thick underneath. That one is one of the biggest group efforts and one of the strongest songs on the record.

“I explore a lot of the archetypes that are used in folklore on this record, like werewolves and vampires which I’ve always been interested in, and on a song like ‘Secrets of the Black Sun’ I talk about the finite nature of our time on this planet, that nothing is really permanent and being aware of that whether as an individual or as a civilization, which I guess fits in with the pandemic and the changes that are going on. There are all kinds of other people, civilizations and creatures that have come and gone long before us and if you think about it over a long enough time span, everyone’s life expectancy goes down to zero.”

The new album not only sees Hill expanding his creative and collaborative comfort zone by wholly embracing the offerings of his band mates, but he’s also let down the drawbridge to allow folks from beyond the immediate TOMBSfamily to include what he describes as “mad guest spots.”

“There’s Cat Cabral, who does the spoken word piece on ‘Angel of Darkness.’ She’s not a musician per se; she’s more from the occult and witchcraft world. I’ve been friends with her for a really long time and she’s a great resource for esoteric knowledge. She’s also an actress who has done plays and commercials and been in films, so I figured she’d be the perfect person to deliver dialogue in an emotionally deep way, and be good at taking direction. Ray Suhy from SIX FEET UNDER rips the guitar solo in ‘Barren’ and that solo is its own masterpiece, in my opinion. BLACK CROWN INITIATE and former TOMBS live guitarist Andy Thomas contributed a guitar solo in ‘Void Constellation.’ Todd Stern from PSYCROPTIC plays the solo in ‘Mortem.’ Sera Timms from IDES OF GEMINI  and BLACK MATH HORSEMAN does guest vocals on ‘Secrets of the Black Sun.’ We’ve got INTEGRITY’s Dwid Hellion singing the chorus on ‘The Hunger’ and BLACK ANVIL’s Paul Delaney also doing a couple of verses on ‘Angel of Darkness.’ So, yeah, there are a bunch of people on there and it’s like a community effort which I enjoy. I like involving people I respect and having them be a part of the whole thing.”

After spending his entire adult life navigating the pitfalls and pratfalls of the industry for expressive and creative opportunity, Hill has amassed an impressive legacy, one that 'Under Sullen Skies' contributes to admirably and irreverently. Like most, the extreme music underground lifer and veteran is probably justified in approaching the future with very muted optimism, but while the world works at screwing its head back on straight, Hill is going to do what he wants to do as well as he possibly can. Uncertainty may reign at the moment, but Hill and TOMBS are still going to do their thing and will be content to please themselves in the process. If anyone else happens to be along for the ride, then welcome aboard.

“'Under Sullen Skies' is a dark and introspective album,” he asserts. “It’s not a happy record that anyone is going to use to get pumped up on a Friday night. We wanted to pull out the stops, go full-on and make a nice body of work. I could care less if anyone likes the band or not because I’ve been through so many ups and downs with this thing that I don’t give a fuck if people enjoy the music. I know I like it, I know the guys in the band like it and we’re just rocking and rolling. This record and the EP came out about as close as I could imagine to what I have in my brain about how this band should sound. The whole trajectory of the band has had each record never quite hitting, but 'Monarchy of Shadows' and 'Under Sullen Skies' have both really come out how I envisioned the songs to be.”

Both Groundbreaking Artists Are Signed To

Indie Industrial Imprint COP International,

Release Rare Split Single In Anticipation Of

Future Tour Dates In The Works For 2021

LUNA13 Set To Release New Album November 13

Two of 2020’s most provocative emerging artists—Suicide Queen and LUNA13—are teaming up for a rare new split single release, coming out September 4 for the latest edition of Bandcamp Friday. The initiative kicked off in March to support artists impacted by the pandemic with distributor Bandcamp waiving its commission fees the first Friday of each month in order to put the money directly into artists’ pockets for each sale.

Purchase the Suicide Queen x LUNA13 “Scarecrow/UNDED” split single HERE.

Both artists are signed to COP International—the label home of Stabbing WestwardDeathline International and Chiasm—and bring something wholly unique and provocative to the release.

Suicide Queen is the uncompromising trio from Oakland “carrying on the industrial torch with sounds resonating from the likes of Ministry and Skinny Puppy” says Dark Beauty Magazine. Featuring Kay Dolores on vocals, programming and guitars, Todd Buller on guitars and Ira Mortem on bass, they relish in turning pain into power with deafening noise as seen on their hellishly wicked new track, “Scarecrow.”

Hailed as “the bass music scene’s Slayer,” Los-Angeles based dark lord duo LUNA13 whips up a forceful Black/Bass/Metal style that incorporates elements of electronica, black metal and industrial rock with the incredible ability to cross over from electronica to metal without using any guitars as heard on the gripping new single “UNDED.” The act features Dr. Luna, who creates a voluminous sound solely with synthesizers and distortion pedals wrapped around sub-bass as well as frontwoman Lilith Bathory who brings the spectacle with brutal vocals and trance-inducing dance moves.

The two forceful acts had a substantial tour planned for across the States in 2020, which has since been sidelined due to the pandemic—though they look forward to bringing the darkly theatrical offering to stages again soon.

Says Suicide Queen of the dual effort, “We're excited to be showcasing our new track 'Scarecrow' on this split single with our friends and labelmates from Los Angeles, LUNA13. This is one of many projects on which we're very pleased to be working with them and we'll be looking forward to more in the future."

Adds LUNA13, “We look forward to showcasing one of our new songs ‘UNDED’ that should fit the mood of our current planet. Suicide Queen was one of the projects that perked our interest in signing with COP International. They are an awesome industrial metal band!”

LUNA13 also plans to release their debut full-length for COP International on November 13.

Band Founder & Guitarist Brandon Mendenhall,

With Strong Message Of Perseverance & Disability Awareness

The Mendenhall Experiment Is Currently In Studio

Working On 2021 Album Against All Odds For Lucent/Universal

The moving new video also features James “Munky” Schaffer from the iconic Grammy-Award winning hard rock band Korn, including one of his rare guitar solos, and goes behind the scenes of the career-changing recording session with Munky and The Mendenhall Experiment’s founder and guitarist Brandon Mendenhall that ultimately produced the material for “Prosthetic.” Included on the band’s self-titled EP, the song’s biographical lyrics offer a strong message for disability awareness and encourage pursuing dreams in the face of obstacles.

As Mendenhall told Metal Hammer“Working alongside my hero, James ‘Munky’ Shaffer from Korn, to create ‘Prosthetic’ was a dream come true. It was also one of the scariest ‘sink or swim’ moments of my career, and in the end, I feel like it is a testament to how far I’ve come as a musician. It was also great working as a band with our vocalist Mario Valadez to craft a lyrical landscape that not only tells the story of my journey, but also makes ‘Prosthetic’ an anthem against discrimination. Reminding us all that no matter what divisions in life we may face, we are not alone and we’ll get through them together.”

Munky has also said of working with Mendenhall, “[He] is a big inspiration, not only for myself but it should be for lots of people that not only want to get into music, but that want to follow their dreams in anything.”

The “Prosthetic” studio session is also famously chronicled in the award-winning feature documentary Mind Over Matter (directed by French filmmaker Sébastien Paquet) that tells the inspirational story of the life of Mendenhall and his journey to becoming a respected professional musician.

Born with Cerebral Palsy, an incurable neurological condition that affects movement, coordination and balance, the diagnosis could have greatly limited Mendenhall’s life, but he had other plans. Growing up as a rabid rock fan, he fantasized about one day being a rock star himself, touring the world and playing headlining stages that would take him far away from the bullies and stigmas that became a part of his daily existence.

Mendenhall (once named Trailblazer of the Year at the United Cerebral Palsy Los Angeles Art of Care) worked strenuously to rehabilitate his paralyzed playing hand, found a unique mentorship with Munky and the members of KORN and eventually formed his eponymous 5-piece band that has shared the stage with the likes of Suicide Silence, John 5, P.O.D., Prong, Smile Empty Soul and Fear Factory. The band released their debut eponymous EP in May 2017 on Lucent/Universal and is currently working on the follow-up full-length, Against All Oddsthat will be released in 2021.

Mind Over Matter is now streaming FREE worldwide on Amazon Prime Video. Upon its release in 2019 through Sumerian Films, it won a multitude of awards from DOC LA to the Breaking Down Barriers film festival in Moscow, Russia.

National and international media has had unanimous praise for the band and the documentary, saying:

“Stories like this make you feel honored to be a metal fan.” – Kerrang

“A lot of parents of kids with cerebral palsy think in terms of ‘won’t be able to,’ but Mendenhall exemplifies what can be done.” – Los Angeles Times

“A great uplifting story of overcoming the odds due to the power of metal. You will love it too.” – Jose Mangin, Sirius XM

“They have my highest recommendation if you want to see a band with a heart and soul who’s got the skills to deliver as well.” – Metal Assault

BLUE ÖYSTER CULT RELEASE NEW MUSIC VIDEO

Subscribe To Our Channel: http://radi.al/SubscribeFrontiers | From the album THE SYMBOL REMAINS. Buy or Stream: https://orcd.co/symbolremains | Hear another ...

'THAT WAS ME' VIDEO FEATURES SPECIAL GUEST APPEARANCE

TAKEN FROM UPCOMING NEW ALBUM, "THE SYMBOL REMAINS'

As previously announced, Blue Öyster Cult will release their first new album in nearly two decades, "The Symbol Remains" on October 9, 2020. Today, the band has released a music video for the single 'That Was Me'

Fans can hear another new song, 'Box In My HeadHEREhttps://youtu.be/Ggj8AI_Woo0 and/or on their favorite digital music service.

The album will be available on CD, 2xLP, Limited Edition Color 2xLP, and Digital formats. Pre-order/save HERE: https://orcd.co/symbolremains

As the old saying goes, “good things come to those who wait” and the 14 songs showcased on "The Symbol Remains" embody that. The BÖC faithful will be delighted given that the band has delivered an extremely inspired album. Ultimately, this sounds like a band looking back at their storied catalog and giving the fans a bit of everything they’ve ever loved about BÖC, while simultaneously continuing to evolve.

Blue Öyster Cult started sessions for the new album in earnest in 2019, bringing songs to the table that had previously been in the works as well as working on new ones. The goal was to craft an album that gives an appropriate portrait of where the band is in the here and now.

"With the song demos emerging for this record, we realized there was as much if not more variety in style and content on this record as any in our history,” tells Eric Bloom "We embraced this and the thing tying all the disparate elements together is the band’s sound and performance."

"The goal was for the new music to stand up to the quality and vitality of our legacy recordings, and I believe we have successfully done that,” adds Donald “Buck Dharma” Roeser. “Other than that, the sound of our voices and style of our writing and playing can’t help but sound familiar to fans of our work."

“The album title, “The Symbol Remains” comes from a quote of an old Sandy Pearlman lyric, which basically we are using to show that the band is back and still rocking after all these years. To me, it means we’re still here and doing what we do...” explains Eric Bloom.

As fans well know, Bloom and Roeser are the two steadfast members remaining from the “classic" lineup of the band, but Jules Radino, Danny Miranda, and Richie Castellano are all long time members. Their constant touring has truly caused them to gel as a unit and you can hear it in the performances on “The Symbol Remains”. Jules, Danny, and Richie here have left their mark on the 50+ years of Blue Öyster Cult history.

"We wanted to record the current band’s lineup for some time and the result of Jules, Danny, Richie, Eric and myself giving our all on “The Symbol Remains” speaks for itself,” says Buck Dharma.

While the current world situation caused some distress, the band is still very happy with the final result. "The Covid-19 lockdown slowed the completion of the record. We were prevented from traveling and collaborating in person. But luckily we had already done the basic tracks. We resorted to video conferencing and producing each other over the internet. Fortunately, the technology exists at this moment in time to do that. The live performance cancellations gave us a little more time to carefully consider the finishing touches. We also sent the album out to be mixed by Tom Lord-Alge and we worked together over the internet on that as well,” adds Buck Dharma.

Formed on Long Island at the end of the '60s, Blue Öyster Cult are best known for their massive singles "(Don't Fear) The Reaper," "Burnin' for You," and "Godzilla." Riff-heavy and head-banging while intelligently hook-laden, the band remains a constant touring presence and as relevant as ever. Pioneering the heavy metal style while providing inspiration to psychedelic jam bands and arena rockers alike, genre-benders Blue Öyster Cult is a widely respected classic rock band with a storied catalog., The band has been covered by everyone from Metallica and HIM to moe, which showcases the wide ranging influence of their music.

CRIPPLED BLACK PHOENIX Shares New Song and Music Video

Crippled Black Phoenix official music video for the track 'Lost', taken from the upcoming album "Ellengæst" which will be released worldwide on October 9, 20...

Dark Progressive rock outfit CRIPPLED BLACK PHOENIX will be releasing the full-length 'Ellengæst' on October 9 via Season of Mist! The band has partnered with Metal Injection to premiere the thought-provoking music video for their brand new single, "Lost." The song and video, which was once again created by Guilherme Henriques

Mastermind Justin Greaves comments on the track: "As the quote goes from Belinda’s lyrics ‘The dangerous nature of an ignorant mind, the final fall for mankind.’ This line stands out to represent our feelings on the subject of global and human decline.

“Generally people know more of what happens in the world than they’re willing to face, instead they turn away and choose to ignore things that are uncomfortable or inconvenient. Well, we’d like to invite those people to be aware and maybe get some fucking empathy!

“As for the song itself, Belinda really took the bull by the horns and wrote some of her best lyrics ever, and her delivery is perfect, along with Vincent who adds his powerful voice to the song. You can hear both voices with genuine emotions.

“And the video. What can I say? Guilherme [Henriques] has blown us away with his visuals again. Working with the brief, he understood what we were wanting to put across and obviously connected with it as his video is perfect. It is brutal, sad, thought provoking and kind a tragically beautiful. Personally, I think if you don’t feel any reaction to this video then your dead inside.

“It is time to wake the fuck up. It is not about politics or religion or profit. It is about ethics, empathy, and integrity for social and global issues. We are all responsible.”

Vocalist and lyricist Belinda Kordic adds:
"It is a mad, mad and sad world out there. And excuse my lack of optimism (or not)... it isn’t getting any better. It’s getting far worse. No other living creature on this broken planet exudes such destruction as us humans. The cruelty, lack of empathy and respect for not only each other, but all forms of life.

“The saying goes 'live in the now' maybe that is the problem? Who cares about the future if 'I can grab what I want now' with no care in the world for who or what will suffer or die for it? I think we need to live in the future to see where it is heading....it is not a beautiful sight. And honestly, I do not envy future generations who have to live in this great big mess we leave behind."

Several prominent guest vocalists lend their considerable talents to Ellengæst: ANATHEMA’s Vincent Cavanagh, GAAHLS WYRD’s Kristian “Gaahl” Espedal, COLISEUM/FOTOCRIME/one-time Crippled Black Phoenix touring bassist Ryan Patterson, up-and-coming U.K. solo artist Suzie Stapleton and TRIBULATION’s Jonathan Hultén.

'Ellengæst' can be pre-ordered in various formats HERE.

“One thing we’ll never do is stick to the rules and stay within the box.”

Such are the words from Crippled Black Phoenix founder, songwriter and guitarist Justin Greaves, who has guided this progressive, thought-provoking, shape-shifting musical collective since their 2004 formation. Their new effort, Ellengæst, follows a recent pattern of the band in releasing a mini-album in between studio LPs. It is the direct result of their ceaseless creativity — when Greaves has songs, Crippled Black Phoenix records them. Ellengæst has the difficult task of following 2018’s profound and moving Great Escape. Ellengæst, though, does not make any attempts in pairing with or succeeding Great Escape. Circumstances largely prevented it anyway.

On the day tracking started for Ellengæst, Crippled Black Phoenix — completed by vocalist and lyricist Belinda Kordic, guitarist Andy Taylor and multi-instrumentalist Helen Stanley —suddenly, unexpectedly found themselves without a male lead vocalist and keyboardist. Whereas events of a similar thread would spell doom for most bands, Greaves took it as an opportunity to tap into his deep network of musician friends. Before he knew it, several prominent guest vocalists were secured, ready and able to lend their considerable talents to Ellengæst: Anathema’s Vincent Cavanagh, Gaahls Wyrd’s Kristian “Gaahl” Espedal, Coliseum/Fotocrime/one-time Crippled Black Phoenix touring bassist Ryan Patterson, up-and-coming U.K. solo artist Suzie Stapleton and Tribulation’s Jonathan Hultén.

“It all came together really easy, to be honest,” says Greaves. “Because we’re working with people that you’ve got a connection where you see things the same way or you wouldn’t get along as friends. When it comes from an artistic standpoint, we’re already on the same page. It all just weirdly worked out. It’s not like I had to go out and think, ‘Okay, who do I know that could sing on this song that sounds like this?’ It was just like, ‘I’ve got a bunch of songs that we’ve always talked about doing something with. Which song would this singer suit?’”

Ellengæst, which in Olde English - with some scandinavian connection -  translates as “strong spirit” and another reference as “mischievous demon”,represents Crippled Black Phoenix’s duality. “It comes from the same place, but with different connotations,” says Greaves. “That’s this band in a nutshell. We’ve had to stay strong because of all the BS we’ve encountered, yet we’re still going and subversive. It’s like we’re giving kids candy with razor blades in them.”

Tackling themes of the human condition and the perpetual internal struggles people face, Ellengæst begins with Cavanagh pairing with Kordic on “House of Fools” and “Lost,” the two switching lead vocal responsibilities for each song. Gaahl’s appearance on “In the Night” was born from his long-standing relationship with Greaves, the two men grew close after countless late tour nights in hotel rooms chatting the evening away. Gaahl, whose vocal exploits are often limited to black metal circles, was given “In the Night” because Greaves thought he could do something unique with the track.

“He doesn’t do these sorts of things; he doesn’t collaborate very often, if at all,” he says. “Kristian confessed to me that this is the first time he’s done something like this. When he sent me the files, he then called me up and asked if it was okay. He explained, ‘I did it in a spoken word because the song is stoic and melancholy.’ He hit the nail right on the head. Then you have Belinda doing her angelic vocals over it. You have the light and the dark represented.”

Patterson and Stapleton blend seamlessly on the momentous “Cry of Love,” while Kordic casts yet another heart-rendering vocal spell across “Everything I Say.” Yet another surprise comes in the form of Hultén’s trance-inducing, but soaring performance on “The Invisible Past.” A cover of Bauhaus’s “She’s in Parties” sung by Kordic rounds out the set.

Crippled Black Phoenix are no strangers to adversity, making the events surrounding the creation of Ellengæst yet another roadblock for a band whose very existence has been threatened on more than a few occasions. Their unique setup and stubborn refusal to bow to musical norms may confuse the casual music consumer. However, the core of Crippled Black Phoenix — Greaves, Kordic, Taylor and Stanley — thrives on the unconventional, remaining steadfastly singular and undefinable. Accordingly, Greaves believes this incarnation of Crippled Black Phoenix is the strongest to date. All it took was another dramatic sea-change to prove it.

“This was the best thing that could have happened to us,” he says. “Before, there was this horrible cloud of drama following us. There was always something going on. Once that had gone and the people who were on the outside of the band who were a part of that, once they had gone and the drama had gone, me and Helen found ourselves tracking in the studio in the first session. We just got on with it; we didn’t think twice. In the second session, we just felt liberated. We just knew, ‘This is going to be great.’ We’re all so excited about the possibilities. It feels like we’re rejuvenated.”
