MAYHEM

Mayhem stands as one of the most legendary and influential bands in Norwegian music history. Since their formation in 1984, they have been a driving force in the development of the Norwegian black metal scene – a movement that would later gain worldwide recognition and inspire countless bands. Through controversies and dramatic events including suicide and murder, the band’s reputation and mythology grew beyond imagination. Yet Mayhem still carry the banner high, continuing to push forward despite every setback. Every Mayhem concert is a unique experience – and the band is ready to make Inferno Metal Festival 2026 something truly special.

PRIMORDIAL

Formed back in 1991, Primordial grew throughout the nineties to become Ireland’s most renowned black metal band. Drawing inspiration from Celtic folk music, they created a sound that stood apart from everything else in the genre. Over their long career, the band has released ten albums – the latest, the masterpiece “How It Ends” (2023). Primordial have not played in Oslo since 2017, also at Inferno Metal Festival, so it is with great pleasure that we welcome them back to the capital.

FUNERAL

Funeral is Norway’s leading death doom metal band, formed back in 1991. Alongside contemporaries like My Dying Bride and Anathema, they broke through with their heavy, distinctive sound and a tempo so slow it makes a 95-year-old grandmother seem fast. Thus, funeral doom metal was born. Over the years, the band has explored many directions and drawn inspiration from diverse sources, but founder Anders Eek has always steered the ship steadily through adversity. Last year they released their latest album, “Gospel of Bones”, featuring baritone opera singer Eirik Krokfjord – an album that received glowing reviews. Funeral rarely perform live, but after their memorable Inferno appearance in 2006, it’s finally time for their long-awaited return.

MÚR

With a sound that defies generic labels and a vision that stretches the limits of creativity, Múr are the latest descendants from Iceland’s volcanic underground. The emerging quintet are forging a new era of dark, atmospheric and boundary shattering metal. With progressive sensibilities that harken to the Devin Townsend Project and mid-era Opeth, a talent to cohesively juxtapose atmospheric textures with polished technicality a la Neurosis and Gojira, and a focus on jazz study among the fresh-faced instrumentalists, Múr is already proving itself to be a reckoning force.

NITE

From San Francisco, USA comes Nite – a band delivering blackened heavy metal. Rooted in NWOBHM and inspired by black metal, they have forged their own soundscape – one unlike anything else. Since their formation in 2018, the band has released three albums, the latest being the critically acclaimed “Cult of the Serpent Sun”, which arrived earlier this year. Members of Nite have also played in bands such as Serpents of Dawn, Dawnbringer, Satan’s Wrath, and Wild Hunt. This will be Nite’s very first performance in Norway.

HIEROPHANT

Hailing from Italy, Hierophant have been active since 2009. The band’s roots lie in black metal, with early influences from sludge and hardcore, before evolving in recent years into a more brutal death metal-inspired sound. Whatever the direction, Hierophant have consistently delivered music of high quality – and that won’t change when they play Inferno Metal Festival for the very first time.

SOVEREIGN

Formed in Oslo in 2018, Sovereign spew out a venomous blend of death and thrash – no gimmicks, no polish. Just crushing riffs, barbaric speed, and a war cry against the glossy decay of modern metal. This is a ritual of raw power and precision. Known for their intense live performances – where deadly precision meets pure aggression – and after successful tours along the U.S. East Coast and across Europe, Sovereign have firmly established themselves as a band to watch.

BLODKNOKE

Blodknoke play brutal crust punk with clear traces of black metal. Expect chaos, filth, and ferocity when the band take the stage. Get ready for a sweaty, high-energy show that may include future classics such as “Heller halshugd enn halvsugd” (“Rather Be Beheaded Than Half-Sucked”), “Sørgporno” (“Grief Porn”), and “Hore med hagle” (“Whore With a Shotgun”).

CAVERN DEEP

From Sweden comes doom metal band Cavern Deep. Since their formation in 2019, they have released three albums of impressive quality. Their latest release, “Part III – The Bodiless”, arrived earlier this year to widespread acclaim. With their unique blend of heaviness and melancholy, Cavern Deep have established themselves as a band to keep a close eye on in the years ahead.

AUTOMATON

Automaton is a psychedelic doom/post-black metal band formed in 2012 in Athens, Greece. They combine down-tuned riffs, psychedelic layers, and black metal elements into their own distinctive and heavy sound. So far, the band has released two albums: “Echoes of Mount Ida” (2014) and “Talos” (2018). Their music is described as dark and intense, with a cinematic quality and relentless drive. After a successful performance at Inferno Metal Festival 2024, we’re thrilled to welcome Automaton back.

HEVN III

From the pitch-black underground of Oslo comes Hevn III, who released their self-titled debut album last year. If you think black metal has become too polished and pompous, Hevn III is the band you’ve been looking for. Here you’ll find lo-fi black metal filled with chaos, primitive aggression, and glacial coldness. Drawing inspiration from William Blake, Nietzsche, and Crowley, Hevn III have created a cohesive work unlike anything heard since the early nineties.

VOIDSPIRE

Voidspire is a new death metal band from Oslo. Featuring members from Horrifier, Ruun, Blodkarsk, and Celestial Scourge, it’s clear this is a group who know exactly what they’re doing. Their debut EP is set for release later this year, and all signs point to a record well worth paying attention to.

INFERNO FESTIVAL NORWAY 2025 Adds ABBATH DOOM OCCULTA + More to Lineup, Announces Black Metal Sightseeing Tours

“Something strange and magical happens in the town of Oslo, Norway over Easter week. Most of polite society flees to the mountains while a scourge of metal heads pour in from all over the globe to experience the four day extravaganza of extreme metal, hedonism & hepatocyte known as Inferno Festival. Subsequently, the entire city becomes a misanthropic miscreant’s soggy dream come true, and we’ve got the whole place to ourselves!” - Metal Injection

INFERNO FESTIVAL NORWAY 2025 is pleased to now welcome the next set of bands to the highly anticipated lineup, which will once again take place in Oslo (NO) from April 17-20 for another blasphemous Easter! The festival now welcomes ABBATH DOOM OCCULTA among the already esteemed headliners, who will perform a very special set from his career with his former band, as well as sets from Cadaver, Kirkebrann, Negative Plane, Udåd, Malum, Feral Nature, and Vingulmork to the lineup! The Black Metal Bus sightseeing with Anders Odden is back!

Join us on a tour of some of the places that marked the beginning of the legend of Norwegian black metal. Guide: Anders Odden (Cadaver, Celtic Frost, Order). The myths about the early history of Norwegian black metal are many. Countless documentaries, films, and books have tried to find answers to what happened in Norway in the early ‘90s. Being able to visit the places where these events took place, with someone who was there, makes it a personal journey.

Through his record store, Helvete, and his band, Mayhem, Øystein Aarseth, aka Euronymous, became a key figure in the scene. He both inspired and promoted all the early bands in the Norwegian metal scene, such as Emperor, Darkthrone, Immortal, Burzum, and others. He was later killed by Varg Vikernes, aka Greven, the notorious leader of Burzum, in his apartment on August 10, 1993, after a year of turmoil in the growing underground scene in Oslo and Bergen.

This date marked the end of an era. The small scene, which had been unknown to the public until then, became infamous in the tabloid media and made headlines far beyond Norway.

Anders Odden formed his first black metal band, Slaught, in 1986 after attending a Mayhem rehearsal at the age of 14. He was one of the pioneers of the underground scene, which involved tape trading, organizing concerts, and creating his own form of extreme metal.

He formed Cadaver in 1988 and released the first Norwegian death metal album on Earache Records in 1990. Cadaver played concerts with Darkthrone, Mayhem, Old Funeral, and many other bands that would later become important in the early Norwegian black metal scene. This excursion will feature exclusive anecdotes and personal memories of the early days of the community from someone who experienced it firsthand.

TSJUDER

The Norwegian black metal band Tsjuder was founded back in 1993 and has maintained a steady course ever since. Tsjuder released their first demo in 1995 with the intention of creating the rawest form of black metal. Over the years, many band members have passed through Tsjuder, but Nag and Draugluin have been with the band the entire way. At Inferno Metal Festival 2025, Tsjuder will perform a two-part set; after the band concludes a set of their own material, they will perform Bathory material, in which they will be joined by co-founding Bathory bassist Frederick Melander.

TIAMAT

Swedish Tiamat started back in 1989 and has since released ten albums. Tiamat began within the death metal genre but soon became one of the pioneers of Swedish goth metal. This period will be the focus when Tiamat comes to Inferno Metal Festival to perform a special set focusing on 'Clouds' (1992) from 'Wildhoney' (1994). It has now been ten years since Tiamat last played in Norway, so it is high time to have them back.

NECROPHOBIC

With over thirty years of active, nefarious service under their spikes and bulletbelts, Necrophobic are undisputed legends of the death and black metal scene. Formed in 1989 by drummer Joakim Sterner, the Stockholm blackhearts propagated a singular and fearless vision from the very start. The band recently released its tenth studio album, 'In the Twilight Grey;' which immediately asserts its separation from everything that has gone before. Colder and more biting than recent efforts, the album is full of brutish metal songs, hewn from unnamed obsidian horrors.

SCHWEIN

Schwein will be remembered by many as the star of Satyricon’s documentary film, 'Roadkill Extravaganza - A True Roadmovie.' He has also been part of bands such as Russian Amcar Club, Kaare & Partiet, Ym:stammen, and Schweinhund. On September 13, Schwein will make its debut with the release of their first full length, 'War.' The lineup features Steinar Gundersen (Satyricon) on guitar, Anders Hundstad (Satyricon) on keyboard, Stig Amundsen (Order/Glucifer) on bass, and Christian Svendsen (Gothminister/The Cumshots) on drums. Musically, Schwein lies in the landscape of Norwegian black metal and traditionak folk, utilizing classic instrumnets such as the Hardanger fiddle and langeleik.

VORBID

Hailing from Arendal, Norway, Vorbid is at the intersection between progressive rock and metal. From their younger days as a thrash metal band, with albums such as 'Mind' (2018) and the self-titled EP 'Vorbid' (2016), the band has since grown and matured with a more modern approach. With inspiration from bands such as Vektor, Opeth, Porcupine Tree, King Crimson, Genesis and Rush, the band’s music has become anything but predictable. On their latest album, 'A Swan By the Edge of Mandala,' Vorbid combines the best of the older material with new and exciting turns. The band is in constant musical development and new songs are on the way.

GET PASSES HERE

“Something strange and magical happens in the town of Oslo, Norway over Easter week. Most of polite society flees to the mountains while a scourge of metal heads pour in from all over the globe to experience the four day extravaganza of extreme metal, hedonism & hepatocyte known as Inferno Festival. Subsequently, the entire city becomes a misanthropic miscreant’s soggy dream come true, and we’ve got the whole place to ourselves!” - Metal Injection

INFERNO FESTIVAL NORWAY 2025 is pleased to reveal the first wave of bands for next year's highly anticipated edition, which will once again take place in Oslo (NO) from April 17-20 for another blasphemous Easter! The festival now welcomes 1349, BLOOD INCANTATION, AETERNUS, SETH, ABYSSIC, SPECTRAL WOUND, ANGIST, BYTHOS, VIOLENT MAGIC ORCHESTRA + SYN to the lineup, with more TBA! Tickets and passes can be found HERE.

1349

The Norwegian black metal band 1349 was founded back in 1997 and has maintained a steady course ever since. With pure aggression and brutality in their musical expression, 1349 has made a mark on the Norwegian black metal scene. To date, 1349 has released eight albums, three EPs, and a live album. Earlier this year, they released the single ”Ash of Ages,” indicating that 1349 is back in full force with more malevolence. Whatever it may be, you can see it at Inferno Metal Festival 2025!

BLOOD INCANTATION

Blood Incantation is an American death metal band that has been active since 2011. The band is known for blending psychedelic elements into their death metal. The band gained a lot of attention when they released ”Hidden History of the Human Race” in 2019 and have since played live extensively. In October this year, the band’s next album, titled ”Absolute Elsewhere,” will be released, and it’s something to look forward to. This will be Blood Incantation’s first concert at Inferno Metal Festival.

AETERNUS

Norwegian Aeternus was founded back in 1993 by vocalist and guitarist Ares in Bergen. The band was one of the pioneers of dark metal, combining black metal with death metal, and hints of classical music as well as folk music. The band members have extensive experience, having played in bands like Gorgoroth, Taake, Gaahls Wyrd, Hellbutcher, and Phantom Fire. Aeternus has released nine albums to date. The latest is called ”Philosopher” and came out last year. Thus, it is time to bring the band back to Oslo, where they haven’t played since Inferno 2013.

SETH

Formed in 1995, SETH is highly regarded as the pioneers of French black metal. Since then, the band has released six albums, an EP, and a live album. Already on July 14, we can add a new album to the list, as 'La France des maudits' will be released. The band has only played in Norway once before, and that was back in 2005, also at Inferno Metal Festival. It is a pleasure to have the band back after twenty years.

ABYSSIC

Abyssic is a Norwegian band that plays a unique form of funeral death-doom, with black metal influences. Their signature is enhanced by orchestrations and upright bass. It all started back in 1997 under the name Abyssic Dreams, but little was done. In 2012-13, Memnock (Susperia), Elvorn (Susperia), and André Aaslie (Funeral) revived the band—now simply as Abyssic. Together with Asgeir Mickelson (Ex-Borknagar, Ihsahn), they recorded the debut album ”A Winter’s Tale” in 2016. In 2016, Tjodalv (Susperia, Ex-Dimmu Borgir, Old Man’s Child) and Makhashanah (Asagraum) joined Abyssic. This will be the band’s first concert at Inferno Metal Festival.

SPECTRAL WOUND

Québec horde Spectral Wound plays black metal. Furious and visceral, untrammeled by esoteric posture or grasping idealism. It is music for the poisoned, the futile, the debauched and profane. The blooming of a flower of corruption, torn by cold winds. The Canadians will be unleashing their fourth studio album, 'Songs Of Blood and Mire,' on August 23, 2024, delivering an elegy of the void, seething with the venom and clamor of an ever-emptying world.

ANGIST

Angist is a blackened death metal band from Reykjavik, Iceland. The band was founded by Edda and Gyða back in 2009. After creating a two-track demo the following year, they recorded the EP 'Circle of Suffering' in 2011. After playing several high-profile concerts and festivals in the following years, the band went into hibernation in 2017. Angist has now awakened from their slumber and is working on their debut album. This will be Angist’s first time playing in Norway.

BYTHOS

Bythos is a Finnish black metal band with members from bands like Behexen, Ajattara, Chamber of Unlight, Deathchain, and Forgotten Horror, just to name a few... the list is long. Bythos released their debut album 'The Womb of Zero' on Norwegian Terratur Possessions in 2020. Earlier this year, they released the follow-up 'Chthonic Gates Unveiled' on the same label. The band has rarely played live, so the concert at Inferno Metal Festival in 2025 will be a unique chance to see the band.

SYN

Syn is a relatively new one-man black metal band from Norway. In 2023, Syn released the debut album 'Villfarelse' on Norwegian Terratur Possessions. With nods to bands like Ulver and Forgotten Woods, mixed with the atmosphere of Vemod and the aggression of Gorgoroth, you might get a sense of what Syn is about. If not, you can find out at Inferno Metal Festival 2025.

VIOLENT MAGIC ORCHESTRA

With members named after classic Norwegian black metal bands and a fresh album titled 'Death Rave,' there is little doubt that Violent Magic Orchestra from Japan has little regard for rigid genre boundaries and rule-bound musical approaches. To such an extent that it is more natural to describe VMO as a visual art and music project rather than a traditional band. Well-suited with descriptions like 'Kraftwerk gone black metal' and 'Blackened Aphex Twin,' Violent Magic Orchestra shatters the boundaries between club and concert formats in a spectacle that simply MUST be experienced live when they play in Norway for the first time.
