"It's a dose of chunky, chugging metalcore, but it's got a brooding, atmospheric side that gives things an experimental, artful twist.” - BrooklynVegan

“About as close to a tour de force as we’ve seen in metallic hardcore in some time.” - Decibel Magazine

“Metallic hardcore and streaks of death metal collide throughout, both of which are driven by a varied collection of riffs that do more than just set the pace.” - Heaviest of Art

“Both exhilarating and chilling.” - No Clean Singing

Metallic hardcore group Tooth and Claw released their debut full-length Dream of Ascension today via Good Fight Music. The relatively new group of veteran musicians formed just last year to delve into new avenues of aggression, while mixing hardcore and death metal. Their debut effort achieves that mission in spades, exploring the duality of human existence through a harsh sonic onslaught that is full of surprises. While the band stays on the attack throughout the nine tracks that make up Dream of Ascension, they set themselves apart with a haunting atmosphere, adding an unexpected but welcome layer to the dynamics found on the album.

Speaking on their debut, vocalist Daniel Austin says:
“While we clearly set out to be a “heavy” band, we had ambition to make this a band that would at least flirt with brief ethereal soundscapes, not just bludgeon you with chunky riffs the entire time. Hence the synth parts, hence the chanting and singing parts, hence the flourishes of melody all throughout the record. Tooth and Claw was not meant to be one thing–not musically, and not lyrically either.”

About Tooth and Claw
Formed during the COVID-19 shelter-in-place orders of Spring 2020, Tooth and Claw features Scott Crouse (Earth Crisis, Sect), Daniel Austin (Die Young), James Chang (Undying, Catharsis, Sect), and Cameron Joplin (Magnitude) exploring new realms of aggression. On their debut album, Dream of Ascension, Tooth and Claw skirt the typical tropes found in hardcore by mixing their bludgeoning attacks with sinister melodies, achieving a balance of innovation and pure aggression. Dream of Ascension is due out May 21st through Good Fight Music.

Metallic hardcore group Tooth and Claw shared their haunting new single “Seventy Times Seven” today via a premiere with BrooklynVegan. Taken from the band’s upcoming debut full-length Dream of Ascension, the track starts out with eerie clean guitar before quickly shifting into a harsh chugging attack. The band continues to mix these extreme dynamics throughout “Seventy Times Seven”, exploring out-of-the-box elements that the accomplished members haven’t delved into on previous projects. This duality matches the track’s concept of exploring the existential horror of what lies beneath the surface of one’s psyche. Listen to “Seventy Times Seven” here ahead of the release of Dream of Ascension on May 21st via Good Fight Music, which is available for preorder here.

Speaking to BrooklynVegan about the creation of the song, vocalist Daniel Austin says:
“So Scott sends me the song and warns me there is a spooky clean part in it, and I laughed, but I immediately thought I have to do something different here, that there was a lot of potential in this song to strike some deep, uncomfortable chords in myself, and listeners, too. I didn’t think it would be appropriate to scream over the clean part. I don’t consider myself someone with a knack for singing (to speak of myself kindly), so I tried to channel my inner Leonard Cohen. I figured if I could hold two notes like Leonard while delivering some hard-hitting, heavy lyrics, I might be able to make this work! I feel satisfied with the result. Both Scott and I tried something new here, and it really caused us to develop a fondness for this song.”

April 14, 2021 - Metallic hardcore band Tooth and Claw announced the impending release debut full-length, titled Dream of Ascension, via Good Fight Music on May 21st. The group also shared the scathing lead single “Your Crucifixion” and the accompanying music video via a premiere with Decibel Magazine. On the track, the band mixes pissed-off hardcore with hints of death metal, twisting menacing riffs in with plenty of groove before launching into an eerie chorus. Despite the unchecked anger found on the single and throughout the album, the band says, "Believe it or not, Your Crucifixion might be the most optimistic, uplifting song on our LP.”
