“Tender Rage” by Hence: A Haunting Ode to the Pain of Longing

In their poignant new single, Tender Rage, Hence delves into the anguish of yearning for intimacy while feeling disconnected from it. Drawing inspiration from Kierkegaard’s existential philosophy, the song tells the story of Helena, a woman caught between a desire for closeness and the barriers she creates to protect herself from vulnerability.

Helena’s “tender rage” reflects the quiet frustration of searching for love in places that cannot offer true solace. Her struggle speaks to a universal human experience: the tension between our need for connection and our fear of exposure. “She feels the soul’s demand for something real,” Hence explains, “yet she’s trapped behind her own defenses, craving a depth she hesitates to embrace.”

Musically, Tender Rage captures this conflict with Hence’s signature “Rage Romance” sound—layered beats and haunting choral refrains that echo Helena’s inner turmoil: “Ohhhhh ohhhhhh Helena / Wrapped in a tender rage.” The song is a lament for anyone who has ever felt the ache of being close, yet far away.

The release comes with a stunning version re-worked by Danny Briottet who has taken ‘Tender’ to new oddities and ‘Rage’ to the dance floor.
