Alternative Folk-Rockers LUSITANIAN GHOSTS present 'Soul Deranium' from Nov. album (Portugal-Canada-Sweden)

"Lusitanian Ghosts impressively channel tools of the past to create a beautiful sonic vision for us listeners now. Innovative in their use of traditional instruments to make clearly modern pop-rock, this music is upbeat, quirky, feels familiar and is catchy as hell. The fact that this is entirely performed with traditional instruments is mind-boggling" ~ Big Takeover Magazine

Portuguese-Canadian-Swedish indie folk rock collective Lusitanian Ghosts will release their second album 'Exotic Quixotic' in November, recorded on analogue tape and mixed by Sebastian Muxfeldt (Elbow, Peter Doherty, Teenage Fanclub) at Hamburg's Clouds Hills Studios and featuring ancient Portuguese chordophones and other European string instruments.

Ahead of this, they present the 'Soul Deranium' single - a vibrant taster of the sonic prism through which they present ancient sounds in the 21st Century.

Re-casting heritage folk violas into rock and roll songs, the collective writes from a socio-political perspective about building a better world, creating songs from and for the heart and the mind. Their compositions mix indie songwriting with traditional Portuguese instruments like the Beiroa, Campaniça, Braguesa, Terceirense and Amarantina guitars – or violas as they are called in Portugal: each with its own string arrangements and tunings.

Founded in 2015, Lusitanian Ghosts are Neil Leyton, Mikael Lundin (a.k.a. Micke Ghost), João Sousa, Omiri, O Gajo, Abel Beja, Janne Olson and other artists that come and go within the collective. The genesis of the band happened when Neil Leyton brought Micke Ghost a Viola Amarantina from Lisbon to Stockholm, and their subsequently performance in Portugal, opening for Primitive Reason on the Ericeira beach.

Their debut self-titled album, recorded at Portugal's Canoa Studios and produced by Ricardo Ferreira, was a successful experiment in mixing the various regional Lusitanian (Portuguese) chordophones with what has come to be the band's unique brand of singer-songwriter rock n roll.

The feature documentary film 'Lusitanian Ghosts: Making Of the Lusitanian Ghosts debut album - Chordophone Rock n Roll' elucidates on why most of these Portuguese ancient instruments have become forgotten – almost extinct – over time. These historic instruments… they are the real Lusitanian Ghosts.

Whereas the first album features ancient Portuguese chordophones over a basic rock and roll setup of guitar, bass and drums, they’ve now totally done away with the guitars for the new album. This experimental folk-rock singer-songwriter record has only chordophones - the violas Amarantina, Braguesa, Terceira and Campaniça - along with bass and drums. Even the snare was replaced on many songs with the Adufe, a Portuguese square drum.

"Micke sang some great Swedish mambos over this tune, and asked me whether “Deranium” was actually a word in English. “Sure, why not?” I replied. If Marc Bolan can sing about Futuristic Dragons and Cosmic Dancers, I wanna open the album with a reverie song, about the killing of an evil President of the United States whilst engaging in ludicrous amounts of gun totin’ self-indulgent passion. All made up, of course. We don’t believe in killing anyone, most of the time. Outcomes, outcomes," says Neil Leyton.

"I guess after committing a crime that serious some kind of soul deranium must occur. It's a great opening track for the album. Sets the tone just right," says Micke Ghost.

"This is all Chordophone violas from Portugal - namely the viola Amarantina, Braguesa, Campaniça and Terceira, played by the Lusitanian Ghosts collective including Canadian-Portuguese artist Neil Leyton, Micke Ghost (the first Swede to play the viola Amarantina!), Vasco Ribeiro Casais aka OMIRI (Portugal), Abel Beja (USA/Portugal, viola Terceira from the Azores), João Sousa on drums (sometimes replacing the snare with the Portuguese square drum Adufe) and Jan-Eric Olson on bass. But not just bass! Janne borrowed O Gajo's viola Campaniça for some extra dark licks. Chordophone rock n roll, Alt-Folk, Urban-Country-Folk, however it gets labelled what should come across are the humanist messages in these songs."

'Soul Deranium' is out now, available everywhere online, including Spotify, Apple Music and Bandcamp, where the full 'Exotic Quixotic' album, slated for release on November 19, is already available for pre-order via the European Phonographic label. No six strings were harmed in the making of this record.

SPURGE Release True to Life, Covid Informed Official Music Video for "57"

New EP, Crown, Out NOW!

Atlanta, GA based, Alternative Rock band SPURGE has released the official music video for "57," off of their newest EP, Crown. Produced and directed by Daniel Medina, "57" was inspired by the internationally experienced isolation during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns and features stylized imagery of the individual band members' lives as they continue through an uncertain "new normal."

"’57’ is a song about whether or not we have any control over our fate. Inspired by COVID keeping the band stuck in their homes for about a year, it comes from a feeling of slowly losing our grips and becoming somewhat numb. For about 6 months prior to writing the song, our bassist (Jen Hodges) kept seeing the number 57 everywhere. Initially, freaked out by the repetition, she thought it was an omen of bad things to come; ultimately, she decided to write a song about it in order to work out her apparent superstitions and flip her mind into viewing it as a good omen." - SPURGE

The band's most recent EP, Crown, was mixed by Dom Gryzbon and includes solos by Phil VastaNick LandtCharles Von Kanel and Greg Hendler. An album release party is being organized for a Fall 2021 date in Atlanta, GA.

Spurge started in Nashville 2013 when Jen (bass) started writing instrumental music for her own amusement. She felt she had found her voice sonically during the creation of "The Untitled EP" and decided to play a few local live shows. She recruited the drummer in her previous band, a local metal guitarist and a jazz college student. They were received warmly in the scene. In 2015 Jen got a promotion and moved to Atlanta. She had to rebuild the band. She kept the same formula. Gospel drummer, metal guitarist, and jazz guitarist, This current iteration has played with Thank You Scientist, and Tony McAlpine. When COVID hit, the group recorded their latest, Crown. They are planning a secret show this fall in Atlanta to celebrate the release of Crown. They are also releasing a video for the EP's first single, 57 this fall. The current line up is Jen on bass (Berklee grad, gigging musician.) Charles on guitar (gigging musician, gear head and tech wizard.) Marlon on drums (musical family, marching band, gospel, R&B.) Ben on lead guitar (gigging musician, shreddy Krueger.)

Alternative metal band Awake Again join forces with Lena Scissorhands of Infected Rain on 'Busy Doing Nothing'

Alternative metal band Awake Again join forces with Lena Scissorhands of Infected Rain on 'Busy Doing Nothing'

The alternative metal band Awake Again from Turku, Finland, are releasing their long-awaited debut album this autumn. The band has dropped several killer tracks so far, and 'Enmity', 'Look Around' and 'Into Two' will now be followed by the fruit of a great collaboration: 'Busy Doing Nothing', with several renowned names behind it.

"We'd been thinking for a while already how it'd be cool to have a guest singer on one of our songs, and the structure and rhythm in 'Busy Doing Nothing' were perfect for two singers. The first name that came to our minds was Lena from Infected Rain. Lucky for us, she said yes", Awake Again states.

"Working with Awake Again was very easy and fun. The song's meaning speaks volumes to me and I have written about a similar topic for Infected Rain before", Lena says, referring to the theme of 'Busy Doing Nothing' – apathy and pain resulting from the lack of self-control. "For me it's very important to feel the song before I agree to be a part of it, which in this case was not an issue at all. I'm really happy I could add a little bit of me to this great song and I'm super happy with the result!"

The party metal song was produced by the legendary Jonas Olsson (e.g. Amorphis, Blind Channel) and it was mixed and mastered by the Grammy-awarded Jacob Hansen (e.g. Amaranthe, Volbeat.)

"Jonas was really excited about the surprising soundscape and the chorus, and based on his suggestions we managed to make the song even catchier. Also Jacob never fails us. 'Busy Doing Nothing' hits in hard, but at the same time the different layers of the song are clear and focused", the band praises. "Versatile singing, big riffs and a killer chorus – 'Busy Doing Nothing' has everything you want in the field of modern metal!"

This on the heels of two sold-out headline shows at New York City’s Iconic Bowery Ballroom and the band's first U.S. tour, 2020 was lining up to be a breakout year for the band. With touring put on hold just as the band's single "Living Like This" began taking off at radio, singer Steven Nathan and his family were dealt a direct hit as his brother Robert Nathan passed away from COVID 19.

"This band has always been about seeing the light in the darkness. It’s always been about optimism, growth, and lifting people up. There were a few months there where I couldn’t even lift myself up anymore, it became very hard to focus. ‘Put Your Head Back’ is a defiant statement about no longer going down that path and re-aligning who you are and where you are going’ says vocalist Steven Nathan when describing the motivation for the bands new single.

“We have so much new music that is ready to be released and we couldn’t be happier to have Imagen supporting us with their experience in the Music Industry” concludes the bands Bassist Alex Goumas.

The group capitalized on their success with big tours (about 300 shows a year for nearly a decade), including dates with KISS, Soul Asylum, Radiohead, and Toadies. They went on to release two more albums with MCA that yielded several rock radio hits including “Baton Rouge”. Zac Maloy is an acclaimed, award-winning songwriter and producer whose songs have been featured on numerous top-charting albums. Once The Nixons went on hiatus, Zac began writing and producing for other artists. After writing for and producing several rock projects, Zac signed a publishing deal with Sony/ATV and decided to take writing more seriously. Sony tapped Zac as a writer in large part because of his unique ability, as a former artist, to relate to artists out there living the life Zac knew well. One of his first cuts after signing to Sony was "Used To" on Daughtry's eponymous first album, which has gone five-times platinum worldwide. This opened the door for Zac to score singles in a range of genres, including Carrie Underwood's # 1 single "Temporary Home," and Skillet's #1 single "American Noise."

In 2003, after extensive auditions, John was selected to fill the drum seat for Seether. John has been touring and recording with Seether for more than sixteen years now.
