Omnium Gatherum Brave the NYC cold for their last show of tour

The band, having been warmed up by pranking support act Aether Realm, came out blasting with “The Last Hero” from their latest album May the Bridges We Burn Light the Way. Most bands might shy away from playing a large number of new songs, but Omnium Gatherum are not most bands, and the audience responded enthusiastically to each one. Being the final show of the tour you might expect some tiredness or a lackluster performance, yet they played with the energy and focus of a first-night set. Ending with “New Dynamite” and “New World Shadows,” they left us all with enough heat to shrug off the bitter cold outside.

North Carolina’s Aether Realm were the direct support for this tour, and you couldn’t have chosen a better band — their energy, laughter, and sincerity pushed everyone onto the dance floor and allowed the crowd to let go. From old-school mosh pits to a full wall of death, the audience gave back everything the band threw at them. They leaned heavily on songs from their last two albums, Redneck Vikings from Hell and Tarot, and here’s hoping new music appears soon. Being the last show, a bit of tomfoolery was inevitable: Jukka came onstage to wipe sweat from every member’s brow while the rest of Omnium Gatherum snuck up and bombarded the band (mostly Vincent) with Nerf bullets. Vincent later talked about how many friends he’d made on this run.

Hailing from Texas, Hinayana opened the evening with a mood that was light as shadow yet dark and flowing, their set turning the crowd with songs such as “Cold Conception” and “A Tide Untiring.” They built an intense atmosphere that was briefly broken when Jake from Aether Realm took the mic for a verse and then playfully pelted vocalist Casey, much to everyone’s expected amusement.
