Art pop band Elk City shares 'That Someone', a song exploring the dual nature of self and other, excitement and dismay. The sound is vibrant, raw-edged, guitar-driven and maybe even a little scary. The shadow-laden accompanying video was filmed in New York City and Montclair, New Jersey, as well as edited by Ray Ketchem.

The first single from their forthcoming 'Above the Water' LP, opens a new chapter in the Montclair, New Jersey-based band’s evolutionary story, showcasing a new guitar-rich lineup featuring members of Versus, Luna and the Psychedelic Furs side-project Feed.

Elk City revolves around its founders, artist/vocalist Renee LoBue and producer/drummer Ray Ketchem. Ketchem’s Magic Door Recording studio is homebase, where the band creates their uniquely swirling dream pop for insomniacs.

‘That Someone’ and the full ‘Above the Water’ LP will be released via the new Magic Door Record Label, founded by Guided by Voices drummer Kevin Marchwith Ketchem and LoBue. These three neighbors, collaborators and friends launched the label with a simple mission to release music created by the rich community of artists who surround them.

With a glimmering rock thread, 'That Someone' dishes up potent atmospheric pop with psychedelic undertones and overtones. Ketchem and LoBue's co-pilots here are uniquely qualified for this high-flying task: twin rods of lightning in guitarists Sean Eden (Luna) and Chris Robertson (Feed, Punch Havana), and electrifying bass courtesy of Richard Baluyut (Versus).

Since 1999, Elk City has faced the omnipresent question: What does Elk City sound like? Given their output of 5 albums, 3 EPs and countless one-off tracks, the answer is ever evolving. But that’s a good thing, revealing an even deeper question:

What does Elk City feel like?

It feels pretty good, man. 'That Someone' is definitive in this regard: Like so many Elk City songs, it feels like it’s happening at night, and there’s a storm coming.

Opening with a riff akin to early Sleater-Kinney or 'Loaded'-era Velvets, it quickly goes Blondie, then unleashes into the kind of full-fledged tornado that is uniquely Elk City.

“We’ve never used this much improv before,” says Renee LoBue of this initial single and the forthcoming album.

“The stuff you hear is happening in the moment, while tape was rolling,” says Ray Ketchem.

From there, Richard Baluyut became the band’s rehearsal tape archivist and obsessive editor, building out these rehearsal room jams into something completely different: The kind of elegantly crafted 3:30 pop songs that decades ago, bands would press onto a 12-inch, one to a side, almost as if to say, “Here’s a song you can get swept up in. Here’s a song about what it feels like to be alive.”

‘Above the Water’ was recorded, mixed and mastered at Ketchem’s Magic Door Recording, opened in 2017 as an acoustically lush refuge where musical expression and experimentation can unfurl. Ketchem, whose production credits include Guided By Voices, Luna, and Gramercy Arms, partnered with legendary studio designer George Augspurger to transform a cavernous warehouse into a freeform studio where vintage microphones, modern studio gear, and bespoke sound tuning elevate and inspire.

As of August 31, 'That Someone' will be available everywhere digitally, including Apple Music, Tidal, Qobuz, Spotify and Bandcamp, where the full album can already be pre-ordered. The 'Above The Water' LP will be released on October 21.

SEVEN KINGDOMS DROPS MUSIC VIDEO FOR CHASING THE MIRAGE

Power metal four-piece SEVEN KINGDOMS has released their official music video for "Chasing the Mirage". This music video was filmed during the Unleash the Archers and Beast in Black tours in 2021 and 2022. It features also Striker, Aether Realm and Lords of the Trident. Seven Kingdoms has also been announced for the ProgPower USA Festival in September of 2023. 

Their long-awaited fifth studio album, 'Zenith', is out now via Distortion Music Group. Orange County progressive/melodic death metal band VOIDBRINGER will release its first EP Wasteland on November 4th via Blood Blast Distribution. This is the first project from Miles Dimitri Baker(INTERLOPER, ex RINGS OF SATURN) where he is handling guitar and vocal duties.

Miles Dimitri Baker comments, "I am pleased to launch my new band, VOIDBRINGER. The theme of the Wasteland EP is past experiences and personal struggles that have been faced and fought over many years. The EP was written and performed by Miles Dimitri Baker while the engineering was completed by by Joey Virrueta. For the album, Miles utilized his Schecter Guitar Signature Model 7 string, Elixir Strings, Hosa Tech, and Seymour Duncan Pickups. The artwork for Wasteland was created by Jugoslav Stankin.

Fred Abong releases 'Passenger Side' single ahead of new 'Yellowthroat' album

Singer-songwriter Fred Abong will be releasing his new 'Yellowthroat' LP on August 23 via Seattle-based startup Disc Disc, recorded together with Rob Ahlers, drummer in 50FOOTWAVE and the Kristin Hersh Trio, of which Abong is also a part.

This is Abong's sixth album, having self-released five on his own, as well as two EPs. Abong’s music has been described as a cross between “ragged Replacements and lyric-driven Bob Dylan,” and as “Elliott Smith with balls”.

Ahead of this, Abong presents the album's third single 'Passenger Side' along with a self-produced video. This follows 'Twister' and 'Aurora', which he released ahead of the UK and US legs of Abong's recent tour with Kristin Hersh.

Fred Abong is a Filipino-American artist, whose music represents an endearing mix of indie-alternative rock and folk singer-songwriter. His work is characterized by existential and romantically focused poetic lyrics, a hypnotic, sometimes gravelly, baritone voice, off-kilter and down-tuned guitars and unconventional song structures. He has a raw and unpolished production aesthetic with an overall direct, though deceptively imaginative and oblique, presentation.

"Early on, Rob (Ahlers) and I felt that 'Passenger Side' was a possible single because it seemed so ‘easy’. That’s not to say that it’s a ‘simple’ song in any way… just that it has a very accessible sound and vibe, says Fred Abong.

"In any case, like the rest of 'Yellowthroat', it treats of the romantic journey, in particular the sense of being ‘taken for a ride’ by the relationship, but not necessarily in the pejorative sense. It’s focus is the early stages, where the trip is dark and foreboding (maybe ‘mysterious’ is a better term). The lovers as ‘a pair of possums going through the crosswalk in the night’, suggests their desire to discover one another privately, away from the gaze of humanity, and the song culminates in a recognition of both brokenness and true intimacy as well as a fragile hope that for the full blossoming of love. Plus, there’s an awesome keyboard part by Rob!

Until returning to music full-time, Abong spent nearly a decade immersed in academia, completing a Ph.D. in Humanities and working as an adjunct professor in the Religious Studies, Philosophy, and English Departments at various universities. He has also been a practicing Vedic astrologer for the past 20 plus years.

As of August 13, 'Yellowthroat' will be available on CD and 12-inch 160-gram black vinyl, as well as digitally across the. It can be obtained in all formats via Bandcamp.

BASTARÐUR Drops New Music Video for "Viral Tumor"

Crust punk outfit BASTARÐUR (ft. singer/guitarist Aðalbjörn "Addi" Tryggvason of Sólstafir) is now sharing the brand new music video for the song "Viral Tumor!" The track is taking from the band's 2021 debut album, 'Satan's Loss of Son.' The video can be seen below.
 

Tryggvason comments, "'Viral Tumor' was the first song written for this album and features all the things I wanted to achieve by doing this album, so making a performance video felt perfect, having a whole band playing a song written a time long ago alone in a garage."

Singer/guitarist Aðalbjörn Tryggvason has always worn his vast musical influences on his sleeve. Be it an ENTOMBED sticker emblazoned on his guitar, queueing up Ennio Morricone before a set, or paying homage to Lemmy Kilmister with his cowboy sensibilities, it’s no secret that his love for music cannot be contained to any one genre. Now, Tryggvason is taking his adoration for crust punk to an exciting new level with his latest project, BASTARÐUR, which channels influences such as NAPALM DEATH, TERRORIZER, MOTÖRHEAD,and DISFEAR. 

“The idea of writing death metal in the vein of old ENTOMBED came in 2018,” Tryggvason says on the project’s inception. “Not being able to channel my love for such music through my main band [SÓLSTAFIR], I began writing riffs, and riffs became songs, and all the sudden it had more crust punk elements than I had foreseen.” And yet, despite the apparent departure from SÓLSTAFIR’s sound, Tryggvason’s signature voice and brief moments of atmospheric texture color the record in familiar shades that ring true to his core musical identity.  

The band was born during personal turmoil, a prime example of turning a negative situation into a positive opportunity. “Living with my parents after a relationship break up and being unemployed, I set up a small studio in my dad’s garage, and after a few months there was an album of material,” explains Tryggvason. “Me and my good mate Birgir Jónsson, most known for his work with Icelandic metal act DIMMA, had for years talked about making music together, and this seemed the perfect time, so we got ourselves into a studio with former SÓLSTAFIR live sound guy Jóhann and recorded the album in a few days.” 

Tryggvason tapped several other co-conspirators to contribute towards his vision. Guest vocals are attributed to Marc Grewe (MORGOTH/INSIDIOUS DISEASE) and Alan Averill (PRIMORIDIAL), the latter of whom also penned the lyrics on two of the album’s tracks. Some of the blistering guitar solos were handled by Ragnar Zolberg, whom SÓLSTAFIR fans may know as he has filled in on bass for the band during occasional live shows, and Thrainn from SKÁLMÖLD. “I dare to call them Hanneman/King of Iceland,” Tryggvason says of the talented pair of axmen.  

BASTARÐUR’s debut also takes a cue from Tryggvason’s distant musical past and rudimentary beginnings. “I used to be in a punk band called BÖLVUN, where I played drums,” he explains. “’Afturhalds Kommatittir’ is from that band, so we got Ingi Thor Pálsson and Flosi Þorgeirsson to play on that song. Flosi also does a bass solo on ‘Viral Tumor.’ 

Now, after three years in the making, BASTARÐUR is finally ready to make its debut via Season of Mist!

Singer/songwriter duo Dauzat St. Marie released the official music video for their cover of Bonnie Raitt's single "I Can't Make You Love Me." The duo will be on tour this fall (dates below)!

The name Dauzat St. Marie (pronouced “dō-zaht saynt mah-ree”) has been circulating quite far and wide these past several years through heavyweight touring with some heavyweight artists. Known for their lockstep vocal harmonies and catchy, yet thought-provoking songwriting, singer/songwriter troubadours Mat Dauzat and Heather St. Marie have kept the name Dauzat St. Marie popping up all over the U.S. by touring as main support for Grammy® Award winning heartthrob Rick Springfield’s “Stripped Down” solo acoustic show series for the past five years and peppered in dates with The Marshall Tucker Band, Lindsay Ell, Schuyler Fisk / Sissy Spacek, and Rick Derringer. Most recently, Dauzat St. Marie toured the U.S. as support for legendary music icons Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo.

2020 was shaping up to be a monumental year for Dauzat St. Marie. They kicked it off with a performance at Los Angeles’s iconic Dodger Stadium for the Komen “More Than Pink” Walk. In less than nine months into the lockdown, Dauzat St. Marie gained over 1.6 million YouTube channel views, with their music video for “Common Ground”logging over a million views alone. Their music video for “In It Together” was used by The American Cancer Society as a vehicle for awareness and fundraising in a national Breast Cancer Awareness Month campaign (Heather is a recent breast cancer survivor), and one of their singles titled “Where Were You?” landed on the 2021 Grammy® Awards ballot in three separate categories – Song Of The Year, Record Of The Year, and Best Pop Duo / Group Performance.

While continuing to roll out singles into 2021, Dauzat St. Marie was invited to record in collaboration with Zac Brown, Jason Mraz, KT Tunstall, Keith Goodwin (Good Old War), and other Taylor Guitars sponsored artists on the song “I Know What Love Is,” with all funds raised going to MusicCares to assist musicians struggling during the pandemic. Toronto power trio ON get gritty with 'Blackmail', a song of truth and empowerment. ON is now on tour

Loud post-punk rock’n roll power trio ON - a trio comprised of Toronto natives, formerly of popular acts Acid Test, Danko Jones and Deliuss - present their attitude-laden new single 'Blackmail'.

Made up of Lucy Di Santo (vocals, bass), Dan Cornelius (drums) and Steve Fall(guitars), ON is currently on their 'Underdog' Tour throughout August, hitting venues in Kingston, Ottawa, Baldwin, Toronto, Barrie, Paris, Cambridge, Hamilton, and London.

This is the second single from the band's new 'ON' album, scheduled for release on September 16 via Indiestructable Records, following up the brazen 'Underdog'.

"This is a song about empowerment, strength, and self-actualization. It embraces recovery of one’s authentic self and soul from external forces - whether they be human, institutional, cultural, or chemical," says Lucy Di Santo.

"This record deals with where we are today and what we’ve overcome, persevering as a society and as individuals. I found myself as part of a genuinely authentic creative, human experience with Steve and Dan in various geographical locations including NYC, Florida and Toronto and felt the need to document it melodically. It’s about pain, hope, reframing and overcoming. It’s about survival. The songs are an authentic and complete collaboration of the triad and soul connection that is ON."

Always pushing forward with an eye on the rear-view mirror, ON pays homage to its roots - post-punk, grunge, old-school funk and 90s college rock. With infectious guitar riffs with a dash of p-funk groove, ON's music recalls a listening journey of classic albums on vinyl. While some songs are carried by emotional weight, some are ripping mini-audio trips with invigorating twists and turns.

"This record is a document of friendship navigating explores in pain, and hope. Looking at the world with a collaborative effort to document what we see, witness and feel through songwriting and chemistry as band," says ON guitarist Steve Fall.

"Dan and I wrote the riff to Blackmail in NYC at his apartment. We really felt good about the bounce feel of the verse guitar part. The accent on the second part of the verse hook was subtle and kind
of loose. We dug the groove and vibe. Once we presented the initial riffs to Lucy, she immediately grabbed it and went into a very introspective lyric – a discussion about people messin' about with your head. "I'm here on the microphone. I'm clear I know what the score is… on your telephone sensing you're not what your sayin”. It’s about people hiding behind technology and Lucy having enough of it. Empowerment.”

Having toured the USA, Mexico and Canada, ON's recordings are found on various CFNY and CMW New Music Compilations, as well as limited cassette tape releases via the Opcion Sonica label.

Toronto is still home for Di Santo and Fall, while Cornelius currently resides in NYC. Written in Toronto and New York City, the pre-production recording took place in Fort Meyers in winter 2021 with Drew Howard at Star Sound Studios. The band has since been working out of Phase One Studios with sound engineer Darius Szczepaniak (Sum 41, Black Crowes, Big Sugar, Bare Naked Ladies, Jann Arden).

As of August 17, 'Blackmail' will be available everywhere online, including Bandcamp, where 'Underdog' can already be found. The full 'ON' album will be released on September 16 and can be ordered at https://indiestructablerecords.com.

The Brodequin was a French torture instrument used during the Middle Ages designed to destroy the legs of its victims. Enough ferocity was unleashed to not only shatter bone, but reduce the limbs to the point where the marrow would flow from the wounds.

Taking inspiration from this period in history three individuals from Knoxville, TN began composing music based off what was the most brutal of times. Brodequin chose and still uses period woodcuts and simple imagery from the era as a nod to its historical influence and as a way to demonstrate barbarity without the need for generic splatter illustrations that lack substance. This imagery would prove an important aspect of creating the bands unique brand among their peers and Brodequin’s version of brutal death metal. Brodequin is often cited as the band that pioneered the lyrical and visual themes of medieval punishment and torture used by many contemporary bands.

Brodequin’s first offering in 1998 “Instruments of Torture” made an immediate impact on the brutal death metal scene and was followed by another well received album entitled “Festival of Death”. For Brodequin’s third album “Methods of Execution” a new member (Jon Engman) was introduced and their first European appearances took place at Fuck the Commerce (Germany) and Obscene Extreme (Czech Republic). 

After a considerable hiatus Brodequin returned with a 2 song promo released in 2021 entitled “Perpetuation of Suffering”, featuring two of the three original members (Jamie & Mike Bailey) with a new drummer (Brennan Shackelford). With the lineup complete, Brodequin’s new material is among the best they have ever written. Plans are set for a 2023 release through Season of Mist Records.

"'The King' is about a broken sacred rule that forbids the hunt of a bear in winter. Hunter was only allowed to face the king when it was in its full strength. Bear was carried out from the forest head first because bears spirit was believed to live forever and only dead were carried feet first. The skull was hung in a sacred tree facing east where the spirits were believed to travel. Bear was truly the ruler of the woodlands and especially the death of the king was full of rituals and beliefs. The song also introduces our guitarist Vageliss as a vocalist in a leading role and his magnificent execution brings Wolfheart trademark sound into a new level"

LITTLE CAESAR IS SET TO RELEASE THE REMASTERED/REPACKAGED THIS TIME IT’S DIFFERENT ON AUGUST 26, THROUGH DIRTY DEEDS/DEKO ENTERTAINMENT. THEIR EUROPEAN TOUR KICKS OFF IN SEPTEMBER.

Little Caesar is best remembered for its version of the soul music song "Chain of Fools,” a 1989 hit single from its self-titled debut album on DGC Records, a subsidiary of Geffen Records. John Kalodner did A&R work for the group, and Bob Rock (Metallica, Mötley Crüe, etc.) produced its debut self-titled album, which was released to positive reviews. On the strength of the singles "Chain of Fools" (a cover of the Aretha Franklin song) and "In Your Arms," Little Caesar hit number 139 on the US Billboard 200 in 1990.

The band recently reissued its 2009 release Redemption and 2012’s American Dream. Both had been remastered and repackaged for a limited deluxe edition featuring four accompanying live tracks. Due to the great response to those releases, they are now remastering and releasing 1998’s This Time It’s Different in its entirety. This album features the classic line up of Ron Young, Loren Molinare, Tom Morris, Fidel Paniagua, as well Earl Slick (David Bowie, John Lennon), and a guest appearance by Randy Bachman (The Guess Who, Bachman-Turner Overdrive). Ron Young had this to say, "We are excited to rerelease these oddball gems. It's sort of a behind the scenes look into our music and features some songs that had alternate lyrics, song demos, and tracks that the corporate ears passed on for a major release.”

This is the third in a series of reissues coming through the bands new imprint label Dirty Deeds Records/Deko Entertainment. The band will also be kicking off their European tour on September 8, in Belgium, making stops in France, Austria, Spain, and the Netherlands, before wrapping up in Germany on October 1.

NYC-based song-savvy storyteller Jessie Kilguss presents her new single 'Sleepwalking Heart', a balanced uplifting dose of folk-pop with a video directed and produced by Alex Dar. On the tail of her 'Great White Shark' single, both songs beautifully foreshadow what's coming on her new album 'What Do Whales Dream About at Night?', released four years after her album 'The Fastness'.

"This song was inspired by Mira Jacobs’ book 'The Sleepwalker’s Guide to Dancing'. I wrote it in 2018 to perform in a show with the Bushwick Book Club, a performance series where songwriters all read the same book, write a song about it and perform the song at a public show. Although this song is about a specific book, I wanted it to be a bit broader and more mysterious," says Jessie Kilguss.

"We recorded it in LA in April 2021, just as it was kind of OK to be inside with people outside your bubble. I was so grateful to be making music with other people again. Because this hadn’t been allowed for a couple years, the whole recording experience was that much more meaningful and charged for me."

Working with the dream team of drummer Brian Griffin (Patti Smith, Brandi Carlisle, Lana Del Rey), bass guitarist Whynot Jansveld (The Wallflowers, Butch Walker, Sara Bareilles), and LA-based award-winning composer and producer Naren Rauch on guitar, they are joined by Nathan Schram (Bjork, David Crosby, David Byrne, The Attacca Quartet), with whom Kilguss runs the non-profit organization Musicambia.

Co-produced by Adam Lasus (Yo La Tengo, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Helium)along with Kilguss and her band members (Brian Griffin, Naren Rauch, Whynot Jansveld), Lasus engineered the recordings, which were mixed and mastered by Charlie Nieland (Debbie Harry, Rufus Wainwright, Blondie).

Kilguss is a former actress, whose acting highlights include the film adaptation of Arthur Miller’s 'The Crucible', starring Daniel Day Lewis and Winona Ryder, and the UK production of 'As You Like It', directed by Royal Shakespeare Company founder Sir Peter Hall.

She made the switch to songwriting after working with one of her musical heros Marianne Faithfull in the London and Sydney productions of 'The Black Rider', a musical written by Tom Waits and William Burroughs, which was directed by Robert Wilson and also featured Mary Margaret O'Hara.

In addition to writing and performing her own music, Kilguss also sings with Gramercy Arms, Jim Andralis and the Syntonics and Benjamin Cartel, having previously performed at the Sundance Film Festival and with Freddie Stevenson, supporting The Waterboys during their European tour.

On August 17, 'Sleepwalking Heart' will be released across digital platforms, including Spotify and Apple Music., where 'Great White Shark' is already available. The full album 'What Do Whales Dream About at Night?' is out on September 23. That same evening (starting at 8:30 pm), Kilguss celebrate her album with a release show at Rockwood 3 in New York.

GAUPA Release Video For New Single "Diametrical Enchantress"

Unique Swedish rock band GAUPA are excited to unveil the second single from their forthcoming album, Myriad, which is to be released on November 18, 2022 via Nuclear Blast Records. The song is called 'Diametrical Enchantress' and will instantly catch you with its entrancing half-time groove and singer Emma Näslund's unique vocal delivery. The time you have to put in to your craft and rehearsals and meetings etc.
Some people think it’s just sliding around in VIP areas on a shrimp sandwich.
Others would argue that it’s time to give up your “hobby” up and do something “real”.

But some things you can’t stop doing.
Art needs be created.
Music needs to be created.
There is always room for more and it’s important to keep going.
I guess some people just needs to create music and art or they’ll implode.

Diametrical Enchantress was the last song we wrote for the album Myriad. It’s freeing because it just came out of us as certainly as mosquitoes in summer."

With surreal lyrics, an energetic, very unique singer, and an addictive sound that combines progressive stoner rock with doom, folk and psychedelic rock influences, GAUPA released their self-titled debut EP in June 2018 and have since made a name for themselves in the international underground rock scene. The GAUPA EP was well received and led to the band playing one of their first live performances at Scandinavia’s biggest rock festival, Sweden Rock. GAUPA then got a chance to release the EP on vinyl via German label Kozmik Artifactz in October 2019 and went on to playing a solid number of shows and festivals. Critics were impressed, not only by the studio recordings and their diverse & complex arrangements, but also by the level of intensity the band displayed live.

In April 2020 GAUPA, which means "lynx" in Swedish dialect, followed up their debut EP by releasing their first full length album, Feberdröm, gaining even more attention from both, an international audience as well as the world's biggest metal label: NUCLEAR BLAST RECORDS.

Jens Prueter, Head Of A&R at Nuclear Blast Records Europe stated: "“While most newcomer bands struggled during the Corona pandemic, GAUPA managed to grow in quality. Their unique sound hasn’t remained unnoticed and word of mouth spread fast. Renowned singer-songwriter Wade Bowen brought the music to Music City on Monday night, Aug. 15, with a special pop-up show to celebrate the release of his latest studio album, Somewhere Between The Secret And The Truth, as the project available HERE continues to earn praise from fans and critics alike.

“I’ve got some stories to tell about why I wrote certain songs, but this one here has no story at all,” he shared to laughter from the enthusiastic Analog at Hutton Hotel audience, kicking off the evening with feel-good opener “Honky Tonk Roll.” “Some nights you just want to let go; let loose; let your drunk alter ego come out and have some fun – here we go!”

Bowen performed the full track list throughout the night, sharing anecdotes from the creative process along the way and remarking on the special opportunity to get to perform a full album live in its entirety.

“With this record the last couple years, I found a newfound energy but along with that I dove into ‘80s and ‘90s country, which I’ve always been such a fan of,” Bowen reflected when introducing “The Secret To This Town” midway through his set. “I started writing more along those lines and I think that’s where the production and everything came from on this record.”

Singer/songwriter Ray Fulcher then joined Bowen on stage for their cowrite “If You Don’t Miss Me,” while Clint Ingersoll also made an appearance during their cowrite “Knowing Me Like I Do,” both receiving excited applause from the engrossed audience.

“This is one of those moments in my career that I believe, when I look back, it might be one of my favorite things that I’ll ever do,” Bowen remarked while introducing his critically acclaimed Vince Gill duet off the album, “A Guitar, A Singer and A Song.” “I tried really hard with this song to show the good and the bad of what we do, and why we do it… At the end of the day, when I lay my head down, it’s just me, my guitar, the songs I write and the songs I sing. That’s really all it comes down to and no matter how long or short your career is, that’s what you’re gonna end up with. I thought to myself, ‘man, I hope that I do enough in my career, however long it may be – I hope I do enough where people don’t forget me.”

Today, Aug. 17, Bowen also debuted the official video for the musical homage to a life of song, recently praised by Billboard as “a stunning ode to the creative tug at the heart of singer-songwriters,” offering a striking tribute to the musical friends and heroes who, like Gill, inspire him to keep relentlessly pursuing the dream of music. As Monday’s full-album performance then came to a close with its thematic anchor of a title track, the show was only getting started. Bowen launched into a rapid-fire succession of fan-favorites – taking requests along the way – as he thrilled the crowd with a career spanning selection of songs, including medleys from his 2021 EP Where Phones Don’t Work to the grand finale of hits “Sun Shines on a Dreamer” and “Saturday Night.”

The show capped off a celebratory album release weekend for Bowen, who also appeared at the Country Music Hall of Fame for a songwriting session on Saturday before making his sixth appearance on the Grand Ole Opry stage that night. Ukrainian electronic producer 6TH CROWD (a.k.a. Dari Maksymova) presents her new single 'Mamenika', which is derived from an old Ukrainian folk song, but arranged differently by the artist. The accompanying video resulted from an artistic collaboration between Ukrainians who met each other thousands of miles from their home.

This song touches on the lives of refugees fleeing Russian aggression. According to UNICEF, about two-thirds of Ukraine's children have been uprooted by the war, essentially suspending their childhood. They nevertheless eagerly await their chance to return. Despite the dark situation and the heavy feeling that provoked this video, this video offers a seed of hope and the enormous faith Ukrainians hold onto as a nation.

"This song 'Mamenika' is based on an old folk song from Eastern Ukraine, the part of the country that is native for me. I learned this song from a recording of a vocal performance by elderly ladies from Zaporizhia Oblast, where the frontline currently is. “Prybyrajsia, mamienika” was a wedding song that young women would sing to a bride while preparing for her wedding. With faith and hope, they praised the bright future awaiting the bride," says Dari Maksymova.

"Hope and faith are the very threads creating a life jacket for the average Ukrainian now. The hope and faith of those long-gone Ukrainian ladies reached me here in the modern world, where Ukrainians are forced to wait for a bright future with nothing but hope and faith to guide them there. My hope is that by connecting these folk melodies and sounds to modern arrangements, I could connect the hope of our predecessors to their descendants and remind us about the brighter future hopefully awaiting us all."

Last year, 6TH CROWD released the single 'Sokolonko', inspired by an old Ukrainian harvest song, preceded by her 2020 debut 'Avoid The Void' EP. In 2021, she released the 'What Happened' EP via French label 50 Degrees North Recordings, following 2020 singles '1312' and 'Не вивожу (Ne Vyvozhu)'.

The DIY video for 'Mamenika' was a collaboration of Ukrainian refugees currently living in the small town of Cahersiveen in County Kerry, Ireland, where Maksymova runs an online English-language club for Ukrainians, which she started upon realizing how many people left the country with little-to-no exposure to English.

"Besides, I needed a way to connect with other Ukrainians here in Ireland. I needed my tribe. We are a small group, primarily of Ukrainian women who fled the country to protect their children. The more I got to know them, the more their eyes reflected the same thing that tortures me - the bitter shadow of war that you can't shake off, no matter how safe you are now and how cheerful the world around you may be. Seeking to articulate this feeling in a video, I spoke to one of my students – Alla Binieieva, a Ukrainian actress and writer, who fled Kyiv in February with her two children," says Maksymova.

"The idea resonated with her - she wrote the scenario, found actors and also played a role herself. Alla is the only professional actress here; everyone else, including the dog, are Ukrainian refugees we met here. My partner filmed this, while I served as director, producer and editor. Later on, my friend from Kyiv joined efforts, adding some post-production magic to this footage in between air-raid sirens."
