Norwegian doom metal pioneers FUNERAL will be releasing their newest full-length, 'Praesentialis in Aeternum,' on December 10, 2021 via Season of Mist! The band has teamed up with The Obelisk to share the video for the brand new song, "Materie,"

Pre-orders for 'Praesentialis in Aeternum' are now live HERE. You can pre-save the record on streaming services HERE.

Melancholy. Pain. Loss. Solitude. Those had been just some of doom metal main themes ever since bleak pouring rain and the sound of church bell in the distance gave birth to the genre on Black Sabbath self-eponymous debut over five decades ago. But how many musicians have actually been bearing in their very flesh those gut-wrenching feelings?

Anders Eek – Funeral’s founding member, drummer and undisputable leader since 1991 – doesn’t particularly see it as a badge of honour, but he’d be the first to admit that somehow, the “death and loss we had to go through over the years were extremely painful yet inspiring. But as a musician and as a human being.” And indeed, ever since their very first rehearsal in a basement in their hometown of Drammen just outside of Oslo, Funeral had been ridden with problems and tragedy. Originally inspired by Cathedral and Candlemass, they very quickly set out to create the most depressing and slowest form of doom/death possible at a time when their home country was being hailed as the birthplace of black metal. They went through several labels over the years, only to see them bust soon afterwards. Plagued by recurrent line-up problems, they even lost two of their key members Einar André Fredriksen (bass) and Christian Loos (guitar) in 2003 and 2006, respectively, to suicide and overdose.

But somehow, Eek never surrendered, but instead overcame all those obstacles by releasing over the years a slab of classics, each with its own, distinct personality, from the utter misery of the delicate yet none-so-extreme 1995 debut album Tragedies to the more melodic and accessible 2001 gothic/doom masterpiece In Fields Of Pestilent Grief or 2012 symphonic masterpiece Oratorium. Still, after the band most recent performance in Antwerpen on February 3, 2018, “life got in the way” as Anders puts it. “Some of us had kids, other moved out. Even I had quite a lot of things going on in my personal life and, at least for a while, maybe less drive to keep on carrying on the weight of the band on my sole shoulders. I never stopped writing music though because it’s something I’ve always done anyway. But there were less things happening you know. During that nine-year gap, I could have written ten albums but I only wrote two ah!”

The beast did sleep less than two years though as the following year singer Sindre Nedland, who had joined FUNERAL for Oratorium, “woke up from his slumber and told me he was ready to focus music again. I had the whole music demoed and ready, so it quickly snowballed from there.” For the first time ever, not only are the lyrics fully in Norwegian but they were also written by an outside collaborator, a “personal friend” of Anders who happens to be a psychologist. “He’s both a close friend and a fan of the band. So, he knows exactly how I roll and what the band is all about. I knew he was writing on the side so one day, as a joke almost, I told me about five years ago ‘hey, what don’t you write lyrics for my bands instead?’ and within five months, he did! His lyrics are more or less his take on philosopher Emmanuel Kant’s work. Initially, I thought about maybe translating them to English but it would have meant redoing them so in the end, we choose to keep them as they were. The booklet will include a little text explaining what they’re all about for those who don’t speak Norwegian.”

Musically, Anders describes Praesentialis in Aeternum (something along the line of “here eternally”) as a “natural progression. I know we have some fans who are only into the first albums and those who discovered us in the early 00’s but this new opus has a little bit of everything for everybody. The symphonic elements are far more bombastic yet much well more done, thanks to the evolution of technology since Oratorium. It’s in a way a mixture of our three last albums yet our most diverse work yet, with both quite concise and very epic pieces. As a matter of fact, we recorded something like ten songs but vowed to choose only the six best to get the best album possible.” Among them you’ll find one originally written during their third album From These Sounds session, one co-written with former founding member Thomas Angell (who left in 2000) and, in the deluxe version, a Candlemass (‘Samarithan’) cover version originally recorded back in 2005 with their then singer Frode Forsmo, thus linking Praesentialis in Aeternum with the band’s past history. Also guesting on ‘Ånd,’ the first single off the record, is Lars Nedland, Sindre’s own brother of Borknagar and Solefald fame. It’s also the first album for their new partner, Season of Mist.

Since the album was completed, the now septet has welcomed for the first time ever a full-time violin player “to perform live most of the strings you can hear on our albums as soon as we’ll be able to go back on stage.” In the meantime, Anders confesses the next album is more or less “finished. Praesentialis could have been released earlier if we hadn’t to face all those COVID-related problems. We couldn’t meet in person, let alone rehearse or even just take promo pictures… But now we have a new label, a new line-up and a totally renewed sense of energy so why stop there? Funeral started thirty years ago be truth be told, it’s never been stronger. So, doom on!”

Danish Melodic Death Metal Quintet LIVLØS Reveal Hard-Hitting Third Single + Video “Seize The Night”

New Album, And Then There Were None, out this Friday via Napalm Records

Pre-Order HERE

LIVLØS brings melodic death metal to new levels!

Before releasing their new full-length album And Then There Were None this Friday, October 22 via Napalm Records, Danish death metallers LIVLØS reveal their third and final bone-crushing single, “Seize The Night”!

On “Seize The Night”, LIVLØS prove themselves to be one of the most exciting up-and-coming acts in melodic death metal, especially for fans of bands like CARCASS, DEATH and AT THE GATES! This excellently produced, dynamic and hard-hitting rager from the five-piece displays their undeniable confidence and skill – some of the many reasons why LIVLØS has been making waves in the metal scene with appearances at Copenhell, Eurosonic and Spot Festival already under their belts!

On their new album, And Then There Were None, LIVLØS are audibly on top of their game: scrupulously ripping through nine tight, hard-lined tracks, the band takes no shortcuts while still maintaining a dynamic songwriting style that keeps listeners on their toes throughout the album’s runtime. Album opener and title track “And Then There Were None” sets the pace with punishing vocals and raging death metal riffs, leading into dramatic choruses and guitar solos that display LIVLØS’ incredibly multi-faceted talent right off the bat. Only very rarely will the band give listeners time to breathe, like on acoustic intermission “Kistefjael” or the slowed-down, stomping “The Purest Black”, which ends the album experience of And Then There Were None in a triumphant, epic manner. Songs like “Seize The Night” are impressive depictions of singer Niklas Lykke’s broad vocal range, reaching from deep and guttural to high-pitched and ear-piercing sections.

Excellently mixed by Jacob Bredahl (ex-Hatesphere) and mastered by Brad Boatright (known for his work with Obituary, Nails and Torche among others), And Then There Were None is an exceptional display of LIVLØS’ confident, modern approach to melodic death metal, meticulously executed from start to finish – revealing more of what it has to offer with every listen. LIVLØS prove that they are here to stay with And Then There Were None!

IN FLAMES is one of the biggest metal bands in the world - never shying away from pushing their artistic boundaries, crafting music that's as catchy as it is crushing. Formed in 1990, the band is considered one of the forefathers of melodic death metal and the purveyors of the ‘Gothenburg sound.’ With thirteen studio albums under their belt, countless successful tours around the globe playing with the likes of METALLICA, IRON MAIDEN, MEGADETH and AVENGED SEVENFOLD - with millions of records sold and a massive fanbase worldwide, IN FLAMES have proven to be an unstoppable force. From their 1994 debut "Lunar Strain" onwards, the band's intricate twin guitar attack, melodic vocals and superb arrangements have given them a signature sound that has evolved throughout the years.

Gaahls WYRD Premieres New Song, "The Seed"

Esoteric dark metal formation Gaahls WYRD will be releasing their five song mini-album, 'The Humming Mountain,' via Season of Mist on November 5! The band is now sharing the second single from the offering, "The Seed." Listen below.

Pre-orders for 'The Humming Mountain' are now available HERE.

Norwegian Grammy (Spellemannprisen)-winning metal outfit Gaahls WYRD return with new mini-album The Humming Mountain. Spanning five thought-provoking songs over 30-plus minutes, the mini-album continues from but challenges the tenets of the group’s lauded debut full-length, GastiR - Ghosts Invited. Conceptually, The Humming Mountain intrinsically ties into the pre-history of its forebear, where heady, fastidious topics of origin, creation, and consciousness are pondered, explored, and conveyed to a riveting score of reflective, if sometimes vicious metal. The Humming Mountain resides between spaces but is wholly its own artistic entity.

“I like the concept of a mini-album instead of an EP,” says Gaahl (aka Kristian Espedal). “I like the format of a mini-album. Back in the day, bands like Hellhammer and Celtic Frost used this format. The audience gets more from this format. To me, it’s more serious than if it’s just a few tracks. Plus, the concept of The Humming Mountain isn't big enough for a full-length album. The concept was something I had to get out of my head."

Three of The Humming Mountain’s tracks were originally slated to appear on GastiR - Ghosts Invited but were eventually shelved when Gaahl determined that they weren't a conceptual fit with the rest of the album’s tracks. Indeed, not one to let good ideas die on the proverbial vine, Gaahl worked with guitarist Lust Kilman (Ole Walaunet) and producer Iver Sandøy to refashion them. Through creative process and artful invention, “Awakening Remains - Before Leaving,” “The Dwell,” and the title track were born again for The Humming Mountain. The mini-album’s introspective bookends—opening epic “The Seed” and filmic closer “The Sleep”—came during and after, one song to remind listeners that patience is a virtue and the other to send them off into dream-like cogitation.

“The title track ‘The Humming Mountain’ dictated how the mini-album would go forward,” Gaahl says. “‘The Humming Mountain,’ however, has connections to GastiR - Ghosts Invited recording-wise, but it’s been reshaped. ‘The Dwell’ and ‘Awakening Remains - Before Leaving’ are more from the same foundation. We did change how we approached these songs by adding keyboards and removing bass grooves, especially on ‘Awakening Remains - Before Leaving.’ We got a different flow and pace to the final versions of the songs.”

While The Humming Mountain is a real place called Gnolloden near the Svalbard archipelago, it has no relation to the mini-album's title or contents. Lyrically, The Humming Mountain is about patience. Not in the human sense of the word—though that certainly can be applied to nine-minute opener “The Seed”—but in the universal sense. The vibrations (hums) of creation ebb and flow sub-glacially. The intent of creation spans eons. Even the mini-album’s artwork—captured and designed by Gaahl—is part of the overall theme. The closer to The Humming Mountain, the farther away it appears.

“I’m always searching,” says Gaahl. “I’m trying to find the core of self, the core of everything. GastiR - Ghosts Invited dealt with being conscious about the subconscious. The Humming Mountain is more direct in dealing with that topic. Creation is something that happens very slowly, I believe. I connected it to ice, in a way. It's a Norse concept, where a witch 'hummer' is feeding on salty ice. Out of this comes the first conscious. In Norse creationism, creation originates with sound. Of course, fire and ice are the two opponents, but every being, which are manifestations of something, are connected to humming or noise, the vibrations created by it. That's how I arrived at The Humming Mountain, a slow vibration from the mountain and the slow movement of ice.”

Gaahls WYRD revisited Sandøy’s Solslottet Studio (Wardruna, Crippled Black Phoenix) periodically from August 2020 through May 2021 to track and complete The Humming Mountain. The sessions were set apart for various reasons (schedules mostly), but the team first focused the groundwork on sound design. Gaahl, Lust Kilman, and Sandøy then pivoted to Spektre’s (aka Kevin Kvåle) drums. From there, vocals, guitars, bass, keyboards, and piano were laid down. Sandøy also helmed the mix and master.

"The first thing we did was to work through the songs," Gaahl says. "This was to find the foundation of the sound and how we could reshape the sound. We focused on the sound (or voice) of the drums. We didn't want them to be too close to the drum sound on GastiR - Ghosts Invited. I’ve worked on three albums with Iver this year. It's very easy to work with him. He's good at bringing himself into my philosophical mindset. He's tuned into why I choose to do this or that. Usually, before we start, I explain my direction so that he can understand it, and together we can expand upon that direction. On this EP, he's done a lot of the keys and piano parts. He's contributed quite a lot."

Though The Humming Mountain reveals a more contemplative side to Gaahls WYRD, fans of stunners “Ek Erilar,” Carving the Voices,” and “Through and Past and Past” will find new tracks “The Dwell,” “Awakening Remains - Before Leaving,” and the title track equally engaging, while “The Seed” and “The Sleep” are destined to open new doors with their mercurial angst and picturesque, if involuted themes. Indeed, The Humming Mountain sets the stage for Gaahls WYRD’s next chapter.

"We'll release the mini-album next," says Gaahl. "After that, it all depends on how things open up for us to tour. There will be shows in Europe for sure, though. In a way, I hope the pandemic situation may continue for a bit longer. It's a good time for studio work. So, I hope not to be too disturbed by touring to continue to do more studio work. We're about to enter the studio for the next full-length."

OBSCURA - Unveil Music Video For New Single "When Stars Collide (feat. Björn Strid)"

Fast cars and even faster guitars are what you get on OBSCURA's new music video off their upcoming studio album A Valediction! Only one more month to go before the band's 6th studio album will see the light of day on November 19th, and virtuosic frontman Steffen Kummerer and his renowned bandmates unveil yet another new song from their upcoming chef-d'euvre. As one of the more melodic tracks on the album, "When Stars Collide" even features a striking clean vocal guest performance by their label mate Björn "Speed" Strid besides the band's unpreceded polyrhythms and solos.

The music video was once again produced by director Mirko Witzki and does not only offer the possibility to witness the outstanding talent of the musicians during the performance, but also some visual pleasure for car nerds.

Steffen Kummerer comments: "One of the highlights and contested compositions of 'A Valediction' features Björn Strid of our label mates SOILWORK. 'When Stars Collide' recombines an uplifting pace with a rather dark and bitter narrative that leads into to a story for reflection. A sense of delight and feeling of relief covers all mournful misery."

Melancholy. Pain. Loss.

Almost twenty years ago to the day, celebrated thrash metal act Sodom released one of the most significant albums of its career: ‘M-16’, an offering that continues to be a challenge both musically and in terms of its content still touches upon a very sensitive issue in the history of mankind. The theme of the iconic concept album is the Vietnam War, which was officially fought between North and South Vietnam in the 1960s, with the intervention of 500,000 US soldiers fighting and supporting anti-communist North Vietnam against Eastern Bloc detachments. Songs such as ‘Among The Weirdcong’, ‘Napalm In The Morning’, ‘Minejumper’ and ‘Cannon Fodder’ see musicians Tom Angelripper (vocals, bass), Bernemann (guitar), and Bobby Schottkowski (drums), who recorded the album at the time, hauntingly evoke through harsh metal sounds and unmistakable words images of war, brutalisation and devastation, grievances and the excesses of Western civilisation. ‘M-16’ continued Sodom’s tradition of politically committed and socio-critical albums such as ‘Agent Orange’ (1989) and ‘Code Red’ (1999). No doubt: In autumn 2001, Sodom succeeded in creating a masterpiece of international metal history, now set to be re-released on 10th December 2021, remastered by Sodom drummer Toni Merkel and featuring extensive bonus material as well as attractive fan items in a premium-quality package.

‘M-16 (20th Anniversary Edition)’ will be available in three different formats (tracklisting below): as a deluxe box set, including the remastered original album plus bonus live tracks, two additional bootleg LPs with further previously unreleased live versions (recorded in Germany, Thailand, Japan), a USB stick in the shape of a rifle cartridge with all the album songs, a Sodom military ID badge, a poster featuring the cover artwork plus a 44-page booklet with rare photos and liner notes by Tom Angelripper. In the booklet, former ‘Metal Hammer’ contributor Manni Eisenblätter, whose private archive contains countless unpublished Sodom photos, tells the story of the album`s creation and promotion, for which the band travelled to Thailand and South Vietnam just a few weeks before its release to get a first-hand impression of Vietnam, a country scarred by the devastation of war.

In addition to the remastered original songs, the CD media book includes two previously unreleased live tracks from 2001 and additional never-before-seen Sodom photos, which also can be on the orange vinyl version (2LP, 180g).

Looking back two decades on, ‘M-16’ continues to be a very special album to bandleader Tom Angelripper:
“The recording is definitely one of Sodom’s classics, not least because of its consistent thematic concept. It was also our last collaboration with producer Harris Johns, finalising an important era for the band. I'm very happy that ‘M-16’ will now be re-released as a ‘20th Anniversary Edition’ with new versions and lots of attention to detail.”

Der Weg einer Freiheit Unveils 360° VR Live Video for New Song, "Monument"

German black metal experimentalists Der Weg einer Freiheit will be releasing a brand new-full length, 'Noktvrn,' on November 19 via Season of Mist! The band is now premiering a live version of the album track "Monument." This special version of the song, which differs from the official mastered cut that appears on the record, was recorded in the Ghost City Recording studio on the last day of 'Noktvrn's' recording sessions with a special 360° VR camera. Grab your VR-goggles and watch the video

The band comments: "Today we're presenting the second new track off 'Noktvrn' in form of a 360° virtual reality live session that we recorded on the very last day of our studio session just before packing all the gear and leaving the place. It's been a quite spontaneous idea and what you see and hear is the first out of three takes we did with the camera standing right in the middle of the room. Grab your phone (and some decent headphones please) or even a pair of virtual-reality glasses and enjoy! You can also watch it on the computer and move around in the room using the mouse, of course. This is, however, not the take that ended up on the album, although it has been more or less mixed the same way. There are some small differences between the album version (to be found on the streaming platforms) and this live session - if you listen closely and compare, you might notice!"

'Noktvrn' is available for pre-ordering in the Season of Mist shop on CD digipak, Deluxe CD + DVD box, Vinyl and Cassette HERE. Pre-save the album HERE.

Progressive, avant-garde black metal experimentalists DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT have never stopped smashing through the boundaries of the genre they’ve called home since forming in early 2009. And with 2021 welcoming the release of fifth album, Noktvrn, the Germans are looking to expand the minds and perspectives of their ever-increasing fanbase, similar to how they pushed themselves in every element of the new album’s creation. Ironically, supporters being able to pay witness to the leaps and bounds the band has made over the course of 12 years, five albums and one EP and live recordings should count themselves lucky for being able to do so.

DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT may have existed and thrived over the course of that time, but forging on beyond its self-titled debut wasn’t part of guitarist/vocalist/mastermind Nikita Kamprad’s original plan.

Formed out of the ashes of black metal quartet FROSTGRIM and good time-lovin’ melodic deathcore posse, FUCK YOUR SHADOW FROM BEHIND, Kamprad and original vocalist Tobias Jaschinsky founded DER WEG EINER FREIHEITas an expression of both their love of black metal and the search for liberation through art, as evidenced by taking the idea of their moniker — which translates to ‘The Way of Freedom’ — to heart.

“FROSTGRIM could be seen as the direct predecessor to DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT,” says Kamprad, from his studio in Würzburg, in the state of Bavaria, “because it was Tobias, our former singer, and I. We had this black metal band together when we also had FUCK YOUR SHADOW FROM BEHIND. We were a part of both bands and when they split up, there was nothing left. For me, black metal was always the most important musical genre where I could see myself doing music. So, I created songs for myself and basically they became the first DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT album. It is officially self-titled, but it actually doesn’t have a title. It’s just Der Weg einer Freiheit because initially after I wrote and released that first album, the band was supposed to be over. But the feedback from friends, fans and the press was so immense and so many people wanted to see the band live and to see it continue, in the end, I was like ‘why not?’ There was no reason why I couldn’t go on with new stuff.”

Originally self-released, the debut was picked up by Viva Hate Records who then issued follow-ups in the form of the Agonie EP and second full-length, Unstille which were supported via appearances at name festivals such as Summer Breeze Open Air and Wolfszeit Festival as well as on European tours opening for the likes of WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, NEAERA. 2014 had DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT joining forces with Season of Mist for third album, Stellar which was issued a few months later in March of 2015.

With the label and a groundswell of support behind them, the band’s star continued to rise in Stellar’s shadow with showings at Wacken Open Air, Hellfest and Roadburn, a tour in support of MOONSPELL and their first headlining runs. 2017 saw the release of album number four, Finisterre, which continued the steady growth of the band’s profile. In addition to drawing bigger crowds at festivals and on tours, they ventured overseas for the first time, playing in Japan and Iceland.

“I was doing music for six or seven years when I started DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT and I was always in bands that would meet up and write in a rehearsal space, but I always wanted to have my own band. I had the opportunity to do my own thing and that’s why this band is called DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT because it’s basically about my way of achieving my own freedom. For some people that way is through sport or cooking or writing; for me, it was about writing music and lyrics.”

Twelve years on, Kamprad is taking advantage of the freedoms afforded to him as he strives to personify the band’s titular expression. Being joined by drummer Tobias Schuler, bassist Nicolas Ziska and guitarist Nicolas Rausch has made DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT more a unit than ever and allowed Kamprad to feel comfortable relinquishing his steely grip on the band’s creative reins during the writing process which began in late 2019 and was completed by September of 2020. This has allowed for vast differences in Noktvrn’s creation that have expanded the album’s overall breadth beyond black metal and extreme music to incorporate the influence and inspiration of classical composer Frédéric Chopin’s Nocturnes, his series of 21 so-called “night pieces.” This, in turn, birthed the album’s artistic mandate requiring that material only be created during the wee hours.

“I always wanted to do an album about the night and dreams and I’m really, really big fan of Chopin and his night pieces in general. For me, it made sense that this album should have a title that connects with this theme. To the left of me right now is a piano and some of Chopin’s sheet music for the Nocturnes. One day I probably looked at it and wanted to pay tribute to this great composer. That’s why we chose to write the title a little bit differently with the ‘k’ instead of a ‘c’ and a ‘v’ instead of a ‘u’ to make it more special. We also chose the ‘v’ in particular because it’s our fifth album and that’s the Roman numeral for five. It’s just something special we did with the name, even though we weren’t sure at first about the lettering because it can be seen as generic, especially in black metal. We have reasons that are deeper than what you see on the surface; not because we want to be ‘true’ — or ‘trve’ — or something,” he explains with a laugh.

The Chopin and classical music influences on Noktvrn are much more than surface cosmetics. Lilting acoustic guitar piece ‘Finisterre II’ opens the album. Jericho-like horns are the bleating accent to the proggy black metal of ‘Monument.’ Baroque arpeggiation familiar to the tuxedo-and-coat tails crowd are spiralled around Oslo’s Helvete shop in ‘Morgen.’ There are also tendrils of folk, shoegaze and indie rock that make brief and appropriate appearances, but it’s the night-time theme that runs deep as Kamprad discovered early on in the writing process.

“‘Immortal’ was one of the first songs I wrote for the album and it was really, really weird because I wrote the song when it was very, very late when I fell into a night-time rhythm that was not my usual rhythm. Here, I felt I was having different kinds of dreams and thoughts. Sometimes I’d be half-awake, half-asleep and not really aware of what my real state of mind was. That was an experience that made me think about giving the entire album the nocturnal or night theme. I’m a very passionate sleeper; I love sleeping and dreaming and dreams are important to me because there’s a freedom in them. In this night rhythm, my head was in a different state and I wanted to create in this state because it was something different for me.”

Lyrically, Noktvrn has Kamprad taking enormous steps outside what has become his regular modus operandi since he took over the mic following Jaschinsky’s departure in 2012. The new album has him expanding his reach beyond not only his usual collection of personal thoughts and mother tongue, but also the style and texture with which he would previously deliver his meanings, ideas, and recollections.

“Usually, the lyrics have mainly been about myself, but on this album there were two events in the last two or three years connected to anxiety attacks. I haven’t experienced them myself, but a couple people who are very close to me have. The lyrics for the song ‘Am Rande der Dunkelheit’ are based around these people’s experiences and them telling me how they felt in a situation where they think they can’t breathe, that they think they’re dying and their life is coming to an end. I tried to imagine through the lyrics how they might have felt. I was trying to find my own words to describe the experience while trying to describe it if I had lived it myself.

“Another completely new thing on this album are the songs ‘Immortal’ and ‘Haven’ which are in English, which we’ve never done before. I always wanted to sing in English ever since I took over the vocals. Singing is the most direct musical expression I feel. Playing guitar is cool, but singing is even more my thing and I always want to push the boundaries so I implemented clean singing as well but, for me, doing clean vocals is very uncomfortable and difficult in German. I think singing clean vocals in English sounds nicer because German is a hard language which fits the harsh vocals perfectly. I wanted to try it out to see how it felt, and surprise, surprise, it felt great! I really like it and imagine there will be more English lyrics in the future.”

Barring a pair of live albums, all previous DER WEG EINER FREIHEITreleases were created almost entirely from the ground up by Kamprad. He would write the songs on his own and do the bass, guitar and vocal tracks himself with Schuler playing drums while engineering, producing and mixing along the way. Kamprad may still be the songwriter-in-chief who produced and mixed Noktvrn (with assistance from Jan Kerscher), but this album makes a significant developmental step as it not only welcomes song writing contributions from the other members, but has the band ably demonstrating their ability by recording live off the floor.

“The new album is the most natural sounding DER WEG EINER FREIHEITalbum,” he says excitedly, “not only the sound, but the riffing and because we recorded the songs live. Music today, especially metal, can be too difficult and technical for bands to even play and record their own songs from start to finish. For me it was very important during the song writing to focus on playing the songs all the way through without stopping. That created a very natural flow through the songs and throughout the whole album. Also, it was a new thing that the whole band was involved in the whole recording process and the last stages of the song writing. Writing and recording mainly by myself was a very exhausting and streamlined process that I liked at some points, but after Finisterre I couldn’t do that anymore and had to change something.

“I still wrote the songs here in my studio then showed them to the others,” he explains. “Then, we met up for rehearsal and pre-production and played through the songs, recorded them and really analysed all the small details, the iteration of parts, the transitions, the guitar sound, the drum beats and everything, even the cymbal hits! What came out were still my songs, but with all kinds of input from the guys. They’re the same songs, but going over all the details brings them to another level. When we entered the studio all we had to do was focus on playing and nothing else because everything was settled already. That was a new and very good experience for us as a band.”

All of the above makes Noktvrn a beacon of musical forward thought, drastic jumps and transformative risks. In his soft-spoken humble manner, Kamprad laughs at the idea that DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT is little more than a personal expression vehicle; instead, he refers to the band as “a very professional hobby,” while downplaying what makes these black metal mavericks entirely special.

“Maybe what is the special thing about us is that we never stopped. Since the beginning, we haven’t taken a break and we’ve always tried to be present with tours and shows and festivals, so there was never a break.”

The album's lyrics also explore quite different ideas to those of our earlier albums. We look forward to working with Napalm Records on this release and sharing this music with our fans!"

TRIUMPH: “ROCK & ROLL MACHINE” FEATURE DOC MAKES ITS USA MARKET AT THE PREMIERE PHILADELPHIA INTERNATIONA

TRIUMPH: “ROCK & ROLL MACHINE” FEATURE DOC MAKES ITS USA MARKET
PREMIERE AT THE PHILADELPHIA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL THIS WEEK

WATCH THE TRAILER below.

PHILADELPHIA (October 18, 2021) – Banger Films, in association with Revolver Films, is proud to announce its latest feature, “TRIUMPH: ROCK & ROLL MACHINE,” will make its USA premiere at the Philadelphia International Film Festival. Directed by Banger Films’ Sam Dunn and Marc Ricciardelli, the documentary chronicles the career of the multi-gold and platinum-selling power rock band, Triumph, and is produced by Banger Films in association with Revolver Films, Bell Media’s Crave, Live Nation Productions, NBC Universal Canada, Slaight Communications Inc. and the Rogers Documentary Fund. “TRIUMPH: ROCK & ROLL MACHINE” will be released in Canada by Bell Media with international distribution rights represented by WaZabi Films.

Before Drake and The Weekend, there was a different set of Toronto musicians who rule the roost. Known simply as Triumph, this rock trio—which includes drummer/singer Gil Moore, singer/guitarist Rik Emmett, and bassist/keyboardist Mike Levine—dominated North American radio and MTV in the ‘80s with hits such as “Lay It On the Line,” “Hold On,” and “Magic Power.” Despite being one of the world’s biggest rock bands, the group split at the height of their fame and seemingly disappeared without explanation to their fans or media. Set to a mesmerizing visual backdrop of spandex, 80s hair, and explosive pyro, “TRIUMPH: ROCK & ROLL MACHINE” delivers a deeper story about fame and the human condition while chronicling the band’s reunion for what might be the very last time they play music together. (English, 97 minutes)

“The Triumph story was compelling to me, Marc, and the Banger team because it was an opportunity to piece together a broken puzzle,” says Sam Dunn. “We wanted to know how and why the band dissolved at the peak of their powers.”

“Sam and Marc did an outstanding job documenting what it’s like to have been aboard the Triumph train for the past 45 years,” raves Triumph bassist Mike Levine. “For fans old, new, and those to come in the future, this is all they’ll need to know about the band. It's great that the doc is making its USA premiere in Philadelphia – Triumph always looked forward to playing for the amazing Philly fans.”

“TRIUMPH: ROCK & ROLL MACHINE” premieres at PHILADELPHIA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL on Saturday, October 23 at 9:30 PM at PFS Drive-In B and screens again on Monday, October 25 at 8:45 PM at Ritz Bourse 2.

GOD IS AN ASTRONAUT Releases New Video for “Luminous Waves”!

Get The New Album, Ghost Tapes #10, HERE!

“We didn’t want to slow down the pace until the end.”

Reigning as one of the most well-known and highly critically acclaimed experimental instrumental groups out there with a respected musical legacy spanning nearly 20 years, Irish four-piece GOD IS AN ASTRONAUT reached a career benchmark with the release of their critical acclaimed 10th studio album, Ghost Tapes #10, in February 2021.

Today, GOD IS AN ASTRONAUT releases a magical music video for “Luminous Waves“, the album closer on Ghost Tapes #10. Musically and visually, the track portrays the beauty and calm of the ocean. A gentle melody is created by a binaural-like bass, a slow-paced acoustic guitar and an ambient electric guitar blur with the mellow sounds of featured cellist Jo Quail and atmospheric background tones, which draws its listeners down into dazing depths. “Luminous Waves” remains entirely without drums and adapts to its own natural rhythm, just as constantly pushing and pulling ocean waves, before it softly fades out into infinity.

Torsten Kinsella on Luminous Waves:

“The song "Luminous Waves" was inspired by the meditative feeling of the waves coming in from the Ocean.

Jo Quail added a beautiful and inspiring Cello and also created the atmospheric sounds.”

Jo Quail adds:

“Writing and recording the cello lines for “Luminous Waves” was a privilege. The depth, richness and meditative nature of this track implied a clear narrative to me, that I hoped to convey a little within the parts I created, working in and around the many moments of sonic and textural beauty created by GIAA.”

Watch the official video for “Luminous Waves” below.

Ghost Tapes #10 is certainly the most ferocious GOD IS AN ASTRONAUT full-length to date – it still retains all the rich musical and emotive elements the band is known for by wheeling around luminance, but offers harsh and deep reminiscences as well. Works of art like “Burial”, “In Flux” and “Barren Trees”, with additional guitars by Jimmy Scanlan, amongst others, are proof of these creations of sound. The album’s closer, the atmospheric “Luminous Waves”, captivates in a trance-like mindset – putting one deeply in touch with their inner self, drifting away to stirring tunes of guest cello virtuoso Jo Quail.

The artwork was illustrated by David Rooney, who has worked with the band in the past, and plays into the sense of the foreboding and uncertain times we live in. Ghost Tapes #10 is available as a four-page digipack as well as in multiple limited LP options.

HEILUNG Sells Out Red Rocks, Reschedules EU/UK Tour

Enigmatic world music collective HEILUNG brought their ritual to a sold out audience of 10,000 at the historic Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Denver, CO on October 5! Coming off the heels of this monumental event, the band is announcing their rescheduled tour dates for Europe and the UK, which will take place in 2022 and 2023. The correct and re-scheduled dates can be found below. Ticket sales are now live HERE and are expected to run low very fast. We therefore recommend purchasing them ASAP!

HEILUNG will be supporting their 2019 release, 'Futha,' which debuted at #3 on the Billboard Heatseeker charts and #4 on the Billboard World Music Charts, placing on a total of seven Billboard charts within the first week of its release.

Last year, HEILUNG shared their first ever music video for the Independent Music Award-winning song "Norupo," which is taken from 2019's critically-acclaimed release, 'Futha!' The video was shot at the Neolithic standing stones at Les Menhirs de Monteneuf in France. You can watch the stunning video at THIS LOCATION.

"Norupo" is composed around the ancient runic poem with the name ”The Norwegian Rune Poem”. The poem was preserved in a 17th-century copy of a now lost 13th-century manuscript and gives a complete description of all sixteen runes of the younger Futhark.

During 2020's Game Awards, HEILUNG announced that they will be working with U.K.-based gaming company Ninja Theory on the soundtrack for their upcoming game, 'Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II.' The announcement trailer for the new game features HEILUNG's song 'In Maidjan,' which is taken from their debut album, 'Ofnir.' Watch the trailer HERE.

In addition, they secured another video game collaboration with MY.GAMES and Booming Tech for the new season of the 'Conqueror's Blade' video game, 'VII: "Wolves of Ragnarok." The trailer for the game, featuring the track "Galgaldr," can be found HERE.

With lyrics recorded in Old Norse and inspired by Völuspá – a prophecy of Ragnarok from the Poetic Edda - HEILUNG’s atmospheric sound will immerse players in a dark new era for 'Conqueror’s Blade.' HEILUNG will also see their name being eternalized in one of the new combat map locations, which is now officially called ‘Heilung Fjord,’ and serves as a place for healing. More info on the game can be found HERE.

The band's music was featured in a trailer for the final season of HBO's 'Game of Thrones' series. It can be viewed HERE.

HEILUNG’s music was also previously featured in season 10 of the television show 'Vikings'. Episode 10 of Season 6 features multiple fragments of the tracks 'Fylgija Ear', 'Hamrer Hippyer' and 'Alfadhirhaiti'. A snippet of the music use in one of the 'Rus Army' scenes can be found HERE.

Speaking about 'Futha,' BILLBOARD wrote, "Tracks like 'Norupo,' which is led by female vocals, is beautiful and melodic, and the choir and tribal percussive background of 'Othan' is trance-like." You can read the full feature, which includes an interview with HEILUNG's Kai Uwe Faust, HERE.

Upon its release, 'Futha' has been met with international critical acclaim. Here is what the press is saying:

"There’s an earthy aura surrounding the record, not just from the sounds of nature but the primal energy it evokes, trying to wake something long lost to the ravages of time... the power and conviction of these chanted tales connect on a deeper level than mere riffs. You just have to let it in." - Kerrang

"'Futha' is consequently more a gentle, comforting blessing than it is an album: an escape from contemporary concerns and a reminder that there is still magic in this world." - Pure Grain Audio

"'Futha' leaves no stone unturned in its quest to experiment and bring its own true experience to the table. That said, it is easy to fall into a trance and with eyes closed to be transported to the past world that Heilung brings back to life. That is why Cryptic Rock gives Futha 4 out of 5 stars." - Cryptic Rock

"Indeed, I have no better word for the music than 'spellbinding.' The combination of the hide-drum and electronic rhythms, the contrasting vocals of Faust and Franz, the mystical keyboard layers, and the dark and ethereal melodies is wonderful." - No Clean Singing

"Heilung have just the ticket with their new record, 'Futha' (Season of Mist), which layers ancient Germanic chants six feet deep for total disembodied bliss." - Free Williamsburg

"Hypnotic and evocative, this preview of Heilung's upcoming album 'Futha' hints that another tradition-steeped masterpiece from the fascinating collective is to come." - Revolver Magazine

VRSTY Share Lyric Video For "Finesse" Feat. Notions — WATCH + LISTEN

SONG APPEARS ON NEW ALBUM WELCOME HOME OUT NOVEMBER 19 VIA SPINEFARM

New York City-based collective VRSTY (pronounced "Varsity") — Joey Varela [vocals], Javy Dorrejo [bass], Chris Cody [drums], and Paul Gregory [guitar] — will drop their new album Welcome Home on November 19 via Spinefarm. Pre-order it here.

Today, the band has shared the lyric video for the new single "Finesse" (Feat. Notions). Watch and listen to the confident and rowdy track below.

'Finesse' was a fun process," Varela recalls about the genesis and back story of the track. "I think I wrote this song about two years ago and re-wrote it about three more times before scrapping it. Something always brought me back to it, though, and it was worth it, since it ended up making the record."

He opens up about the track's deeper meaning, saying, "The song itself is about finding all of my heartaches and faults to be a blessing in disguise. Sure, everything hurts at the time, but it has all made me stronger. It has also made me a little crazier. Crazy is good, though."

Varela, an admitted fan of Notions, connected with the artist online and that'show this collaboration was born. "Over the years, I watched him develop into this incredible artist and I always told myself, 'The day I get to do a full length, he ABSOLUTELY needs to be on it' And here we are. I clearly couldn't have chosen a better artist to feature on this song." Notions adds another layer of straight up vibe to this hard-hitting, album-opening song.

Welcome Home is the band's debut full length for the label and follows last year's breakthrough Cloud City EP, which has accumulated six million streams in less than a year and yielded the head-turning singles "Shameless" and "Massive." The latter was the most played on SiriusXM's Octane for two weeks in a row in late 2020. VRSTY have perfected their seamless and fearless cross-pollination of metallic grooves and R&B-influenced, after midnight vocal swagger on this 14-track offering. VRSTY aren't just offering their own take on a genre; they have authored a fusion style that is entirely their own.

"Welcome Home is an incredibly personal album to me," Varela shares. "I know everybody says that, and hey, maybe they're not lying when they do. I sure as hell am not. It was definitely a task, at first, trying to figure out how to phrase or sing something without getting too personal. But somewhere along the way, I threw that idea out the window and decided to say exactly what I felt. You won't find me trying to sound cool or using any fancy wordplay. It's just me in my rawest form, saying exactly what I've felt or experienced over the years, which is what has made me who I am today. I think if anybody ever wants to get to know me, this record will give you everything you need to know. No secrets. Just me."

VRSTY have also booked several shows. All dates are below.

GREEN LUNG Release Lyric Video for "Upon The Altar" - New LP 'Black Harvest' Out Oct. 22

With just one week to go before the release of Black Harvest, GREEN LUNG have premiered a new lyric video for their single "Upon The Altar". 'Black Harvest', the highly anticipated follow-up to 2019's Woodland Rites, will be released via Svart Records on October 22, 2021. The track is available to stream on all digital platforms - alongside three other singles. 'Black Harvest' will be available on heavy-weight vinyl, CD, and digital formats, and is available to pre-order here.

GREEN LUNG vocalist Tom Templar comments: "With only a week to go until the release of Black Harvest, we thought we'd celebrate by releasing a lyrics video for our latest single Upon the Altar, chopping up some of our favorite altar scenes from sleazy 70s horror movies. Upon the Altar is a tribute to all these movies - especially Dracula AD 1972 - and you should go check all of them out ahead of Halloween. Also, be forewarned - this video is definitely not in any way safe for work.'’

Black Harvest is already collecting accolades from the press, with Metal Hammer scoring the album 8 out of10, and The Guardian summarising its appeal as Green Lung offering "an occultish vision of Britain that fits neatly into the alternate England also inhabited by director Ben Wheatley’s rural eccentrics, fanzine Weird Walk’s doomy pagan ramblings and Cornwall’s eerie Museum of Witchcraft."

Recorded at Giant Wafer Studios in rural mid-Wales over the course of two weeks with longtime producer Wayne Adams (Petbrick, Big Lad), before being mastered by John Davis at Metropolis (Led Zeppelin, Royal Blood), Black Harvest is a more expansive and textured record than anything the band has done before, boasting a cinematic quality and more attention to detail. All samples were sourced from the local countryside and from instruments found in the studio, including the haunting opening vocal of The Harrowing which was recorded on a whim after the band broke into the local church (the organ can be heard creaking in the background).

Picking up where the self-released Woodland Rites left off, on Black Harvest, GREEN LUNG continues to draw inspiration from Britain's rich history of folklore, from witchcraft, and from cultish horror films. Nature - as always - is woven into the fabric of the songs; this time around the album was recorded in late autumn, and the seasonal atmosphere seeped into the music, which is redolent of mists, falling leaves, and the crumbling glory of the Magnificent Seven cemeteries of London, the city the band calls home.

GREEN LUNG recently completed a run of UK dates ahead of the release of Black Harvest. More dates will continue to be announced; the band will play Damnation Festival 2021 and Desertfest 2022.
