FORGETTING THE MEMORIES Share New Single "A Voice In The Static" - New Album 'Vemond' Coming September 24

Swedish metalcore five-piece FORGETTING THE MEMORIES have released their new single "A Voice In The Static". It's the fourth single from the new album, 'Vemod', coming September 24th via Long Branch Records.

Listen to "A Voice In The Static" and pre-order the new album 'Vemod' here:

http://smarturl.it/ftm_vemod

Forgetting The Memories about the new single "A Voice In The Static":

"This story behind this song is about love loss and the aftermath of dealing with that horrible experience. To cope with being reminded by the little things you used to resemble with this person. The outcome of this incident causes depression and self-hatred in order to believe that you are in fact alright."

Pre-Order VEMOD Here

Forgetting the Memories combine intricate, headbanging rhythms with melodic choruses that will have you singing along in no time, constructing a unique blend of deathcore and metalcore that is unparalleled in complexity and intensity.

"Monophobia," their first self-released full-length in 2016, was a sprawling labyrinth of ferocious, hard-pounding breakdowns and catchy choruses, peppered with meaningful lyrics detailing deeply personal journeys through issues like battling cancer, losing a friend, and heartbreak. The band continued on this path on their first release with their new label "Long Branch Records". The EP "Known Darkness" was released in 2019 and featured 6 songs, further confirming the band's rapid growth and potential.

Now "Vemod", the second LP from the five Swedes, is a clear further development of the already known trademarks of the band and thus comes across even more intense than its predecessors. The 10 tracks on the new album, which was mixed and mastered by Buster Odeholm (Vildhjarta, Humanity's Last Breath), are lyrically haunting and deal with personal setbacks, world-weariness, anger, and melancholy or wistfulness ("Vemod" in Swedish).

Over the years, Forgetting The Memories have remained true to their particular style, yet have constantly evolved and defined themselves as a truly essential force within the genre.

FORGETTING THE MEMORIES Lineup:

Bastian Kempe - Vocals

Gustav Holst - Guitars

Adrian Lyxell - Guitars

Lukas Löken Olsson - Bass & Vocals

Johan Blomberg - Drums

SIAMESE Release New Single "Numb" - New Album 'Home' Coming December 10th

Copenhagen’s SIAMESE are back with another infectious single from their long-awaited new album 'Home'.

"Numb" encompasses all of the elements that Siamese are renowned for; a soaring melodic chorus alongside thundering breakdowns, with a sprinkling of synths and electro-beats for good measure. Truly masters in their craft, they continue to create hit after hit, and are quickly becoming one of Denmark's hottest new exports in the music scene.

SIAMESE singer Mirza Radonjica about their new single "Numb":

"'Numb' is another product of sitting at home and watching the pandemic unfold. A scary realization that nothing seemed to affect or scare me anymore. Millions of people have died during covid, but my biggest concern was whether or not I could go to a restaurant. Not to point fingers at anyone else but myself. The bombardment of bad news truly left me numb. We had to write it down cause I believe I am not alone in my guilty conciseness, and the inner war with myself about this."

With incredible reactions from influential rock media and DSP playlist tastemakers, over 35 million streams worldwide, and a number of tours and live dates in the pipeline, the band has no intention of slowing down anytime soon

“Siamese have an incredible spirit and deliver a crystal-clear, anthemic sound.”

Alex Baker – Kerrang Radio (UK)

“Get your ears around these guys before they take off”

Rock Sound (UK)

'Home' is due for release on December 10th, 2021 via Long Branch Records

'Not Even Trying' by PINK TURNS BLUE

"One of the most ethically driven and environmentally conscious post-punk artists of our time... this latest offering is sure to go down in the band’s record as one of PTB’s most powerful releases" ~ The Spill Magazine

"Consistent purveyors of quality guitar-laden post punk and dark-bent indie rock... one of the most honest and most direct enduring acts in post punk today" ~ Destroy // Exist

"The timeless message is driven home with a timeless sound composed with refined effect" ~ Post-Punk.com

"There are bands which have had high ranks in the charts and still have a place deep in the heart of many fans. One of those bands is the German Dark Wave legend Pink Turns Blue" ~ Reflections of Darkness

"When it comes to actual darkwave, Berlin’s Pink Turns Blue are rightly regarded as one of the founding acts... up to the present, they have also been one of the finer exemplars of continental postpunk" ~ CVLT Nation

Iconic post-punk / darkwave outfit Pink Turns Blue presents 'Not Even Trying', the final single to be released before their new 'Tainted' album is released via Orden Records.

This long-player is the result of time well spent during a lockdown year - writing, recording, mixing and mastering the new album in their Berlin recording studio. On ‘Tainted’, the band added an electronic element to their classical vocals, guitar, bass and drums. The album title itself relates to the state of our world: climate change, its effects, the reaction to it, the split within society, isolation, health risks and financial uncertainty.

“When I travel the world, I encounter two types of people. Many are sad and void of hope that mankind is able to change. Others just don’t care or are sarcastic about just everything. I guess this makes me angry. I see all those toddlers with their lives before them, playing and laughing and inheriting a world in disarray just because of the greediness and irresponsibility of their parents. A call to try so much harder! Instead of using excuses for missing or inadequate action, mankind really has to get its shit together – now," says Mic Jogwer.

"Obviously, young people seem to realize the cost of our shortcomings much better: all the carelessness about using resources, polluting the environment, the threatening effects of global warming, a poisoned environment and extinct species. They are at the beginning of their lives and the world is in crisis already. But most of us are using excuses or alibi “actions” to cover up our indifference or complacency. We pursue our own advantage at the expense of others even if the calculation does not add up in the end: if we don’t incorporate sustainability in our actions all will lose.”

So far in 2021, the band has released three singles from the album, including 'You Still Mean Too Much To Me', 'There Must Be So Much More' and 'So Why Not Save The World'.

Today Pink Turns Blue is a trio comprised of Mic Jogwer (vocals, guitar), Reubi Walter (bass, keyboards) and Paul Richter (drums). In the first generation of gothic rock, Pink Turns Blue formed in 1985, originally as a duo consisting of Jogwer and Thomas Elbern, plus a drum machine. Naming themselves after a Hüsker Dü song, their sound was initially inspired by The Chameleons, Clan of Xymox, and The Cure.

Their debut album 'If Two Worlds Kiss' brought dark undertones into their new wave sound, essentially advancing the darkwave sub-genre while becoming a seminal album in the post-punk genre. Emerging from the fear and uncertainty of a divided Cold War Germany, the band went on to release 11 full-length LPs, the latest being 'The AERDT – Untold Stories' in 2016.

As of September 3, 'Not Even Trying' will be available across digital platforms, including Apple Music and Spotify. The 'Tainted' LP is out on September 24, available digitally and in two physical formats - a CD with a 16-page booklet and on black vinyl, strictly limted to 500 copies, with an 8-page booklet. Both can be pre-ordered exclusively via the band's website.

CYNIC Shares Sean Malone Tribute + Charity Initiative

CYNIC is now sharing a touching tribute to late bassist Sean Malone, who died on December 7, 2020. To commemorate Malone's legacy, CYNIC has released a never-before-heard recorded performance of the song "Integral," in which Malone performs fretless bass. "Integral" was originally released as a solo guitar and vocal track on Cynic's 'Re-Traced' EP.

mail-139.jpeg

In addition, CYNIC founding member and guitarist Paul Masvidal has shared the following statement:

On the passing of Sean Malone:
Since my friend and Cynic bandmate Sean Malone's passing in late 2020, many people have publicly speculated about, and privately reached out to me regarding, the circumstances of his death. I have kept my silence as I have worked through my grief and out of respect for Malone's privacy. Questions and rumors have persisted, so I want to share what I can with the many fans whose lives he touched so deeply and who are seeking closure.

On December 7, 2020, Malone was found dead by suicide in Largo, Florida, where his mother had lived. She had been ailing for some time before her death in 2018; Malone had been her sole caregiver during her difficult final year. Then, in January 2020, we suddenly lost our bandmate Sean Reinert. Combined with his mother's loss, it was an emotional double whammy that hit Malone hard.

After his mother’s death, we spoke often, having long chats about grief, loss, and the future of Cynic. I urged Sean to move out to California and live with me so he could get back on his feet and start fresh, and he did. I noticed a newfound vigor in Malone I hadn't seen before. He was excited to be in the world again, we were working on new music, and he even began teaching bass privately. Then came the pandemic. Everything shut down and so did Malone. His pain and suffering re-emerged and his light began to dim.

Matters took an unexpected turn. Late one early summer night, he disappeared. I called him, left messages, texted, emailed, contacted missing persons and everyone we had in common, but no one had heard anything. There was no response. He quit the world. My hope that he was regrouping in private and would turn up safely turned to heartache on December 7th.

As I share this sad news about his death, I want to celebrate his life by sharing one of his most beautiful and lyrical moments ever recorded, and one which his fans have not yet heard. A few years after the release of Cynic's 'Re-Traced' EP, Sean Malone recorded fretless bass on this solo guitar and vocal track titled “Integral.” Here's a video celebrating his playing, and a full transcription in his honor along with the song file for download.

I am grateful to be able to share this video with you now, and I will share details about new music in the coming weeks. Please celebrate the genius and transcendent talent that was Sean Malone. Read more about his fascinating life, unique passions and accomplishments at his Wikipedia page.

As an act of support, and in honor of Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, I invite you to donate as you wish for the “Integral” song download which comes with a guitar/bass transcription of the song and an instrumental (no bass mix) for fellow musicians to play along with. 50 percent of proceeds will be shared with suicide prevention organizations To Write Love On Her Arms (TWLOHA), and The Trevor Project. The remaining will go towards funding a documentary about the lives and artistry of Malone and Reinert.

With love and courage, Paul Masvidal

MASSACRE REVEALS NEW SINGLE "RUINS OF R'LYEAH"

DEATH METAL PIONEERS' 4TH ALBUM, "RESURGENCE," OUT OCT 22ND

Floridia's masters of death metal, MASSACRE, have released searing new single, "Ruins of R'lyeh," from their highly anticipated 4th full-length album, "Resurgence," that's out October 22nd from Nuclear Blast.

Watch the visualizer for "Ruins of R'lyeh"

Commenting on the upcoming album and new single, vocalist Kam Lee states:

"I’m going to take you back down into the abyss! This track, 'Ruins of R’lyeh,' like many of the other’s on the 'Resurgence' album are direct sequels to tracks off 'From Beyond.' With a purposeful musical connection to the track 'Cryptic Realms,' this new song of O.S.D.M. takes the listener back down into the depths of the darkness with a very heavy laden Lovecraftian lyrical direction loosely based on 'The Call Of Cthulhu.' Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn ('In his house at R'lyeh, dead Cthulhu waits dreaming.')"

Pre-order "Resurgence" here: https://www.nuclearblast.com/massacre-resurgence

MASSACRE's vicious new track follows their recently released single "The Innsmouth Strain." Watch the visualizer here: https://youtu.be/ei3c7aOjVFM

MASSACRE rose from the swamps of Southern Florida in the early 80's during a heatwave of groundbreaking death metal that produced some of the genre's most revered forefathers, DEATH, OBITUARY and SIX FEET UNDER. Their legacy was founded with a string of classic demos, "Aggressive Tyrant" (1986), "Chamber of Ages" (1986) and "The Second Coming" (1990), before unleashing their critically praised classic debut album "From Beyond" (1991). Now decades later, the band makes their long-awaited return, invigorated with the same youthful rage that brought them together at inception. For "Resurgence," long-time members, vocalist Kam Lee (MANTAS, BONE GNAWER, THE GROTESQUERY) and bassist Mike Borders, were joined in the studio by some of death's most prolific and malignant songwriters, guitarist Rogga Johansson(PAGANIZER, MEGASCAVENGER, RIB SPREADER), guitarist Jonny Pettersson (WOMBBATH, NATTRAVNEN, HENRY KANE), guitarist Scott Fairfax (MEMORIAM, AS THE WORLD DIES) and drummer Brynjar Helgetun (CRYPTICUS, THE GROTESQUERY) with additional guest performances by Marc Grewe (INSIDIOUS DISEASE), Dave Ingram (BENEDICTION), Anders Odden (CADAVER), and Pete Slate (DRUID LORD) The record was recorded with producer and death metal icon Dan Swanö (ex-Edge of Sanity, ex-Bloodbath) and Pettersson as engineer/mixer.

CARNIFEX’sGRAVESIDE CONFESSIONSis no stranger to the harsh world in which it was created. While all of humanity experiences the turmoil of pain, weakness, and betrayal, it is also deeply ingrained in our nature to keep these notions closely protected; to keep them secret. Often as we approach death, we feel an insatiable need to reveal these things to one another; to confess.

The album arose just in time to aid in celebrating the 15 year anniversary of the debutCARNIFEXalbum,DEAD IN MY ARMS.The band revisited their first album to re-record 3 songs, but now with huge advancements in production technology. A return to their roots, these songs act as the completion of a circle; a return to where things first began.

Graveside Confessionsis available in the following formats:

  • CD Jewelcase

  • Red Cassette

  • Vinyl

    • Red & Pink Swirl W/ Black Splatter

    • Clear W/ Red & Black Splatter

With the engineering of the record completed in-house by drummer Shawn Cameron, the band recorded the album at Back Lounge Studios in San Diego, CA almost entirely themselves with the help of Mick Kenney (ANAAL NATHRAKH, BLEEDING THROUGH) for the mixing and mastering. This process especially compared to CARNIFEX albums of the past developed a far more satisfying and concentrated artistic vision for the band. CARNIFEX enlisted English artist GODMACHINE, who has worked on the two previous albums, to create the next installment of visual art for Graveside Confessions.

BLOOD RED THRONE DEBUT RAGING DEATH METAL SINGLE "6:7"

NEW ALBUM, "IMPERIAL CONGREGATION," OUT OCT 8TH

Norway's masters of death metal BLOOD RED THRONE has released a cataclysmic new single today, titled "6:7." The song is featured on the band's upcoming, 10th album, "Imperial Congregation," that's due out October 8th from Nuclear Blast.

Founding guitarist Daniel Olaisen comments on the song:

"'6:7' has one of the most epic solos in BRT history. A super heavy riff and some real kick ass headbanging parts throughout the whole song!"

"Conquered Malevolence" Lyric Video: https://youtu.be/B_PPW2nzdZc

With over 25 years and 10 albums soon to be under their belt, BLOOD RED THRONE is dedicated to the continual delivery of straight forward, exceptional death metal with "Imperial Congregation" being no exception. “This time around we’ve made something new and fresh in our sound. We felt it from the very first song that was written; this will take us to a whole different level in terms of arrangements, riffs, vocals... everything. We are super-excited to share this with our fans, and in cooperation with the greatest label ever,” says Olaisen.

"Imperial Congregation" delivers quality, old school sound while reflecting in part upon the self righteous nature of humanity and its incessant need to destroy itself through power, ignorance and religion. “We live outside this system,” explains Olaisen. “We don’t join in on the sheep mentality. Create your own possibilities, be responsible for your own misery or success!

The haunting, organic album artwork was designed by the infamous Marcelo Vasco. The image displays a flock of old, religious men as they meet in secrecy to design the laws of lower society. “Many of our lyrics deal with our skepticism of religion, and of mankind in general. Be free or be dead,” says Olaisen. "Two gigantic skeletons tower over the men of worship as they dictate human fate by candlelight."

BLOOD RED THRONE Lineup:
Daniel ”Død” Olaisen – Guitar
Ivan ”Meathook” Gujic – Guitar
Freddy "the Shred" Bolsø – Drums
Stian "Gunner" Gundersen – Bass
Yngve "Bolt" Christiansen – Vocals

THE NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA RELEASE NEW ALBUM "AEROMANTIC II" TODAY!

Dear ladies and gentlemen, please prepare for landing: THE NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA release their new album "Aeromantic II" today! The new album of Sweden's most famous cabin crew is another thrilling journey to the band's core and their passion for traveling and being in motion - accompanied by the balance act of bittersweet sadness and pure joy of life.

But before heading off to your next destination, please take some time to listen to the pilot's announcement:

"Aeromantic II is another triumphant return from classic rock heavy-weight contenders The Night Flight Orchestra. At least they don’t seem to plan on throwing in the towel anytime soon. A celebration of life with that constant undercurrent of Swedish melancholy, Aeromantic II is the golden glitter that you don’t want to get rid of, even if it gets stuck everywhere. It’s every memory you didn’t know you had, and every future you didn’t know that you were wishing for. It’s the fork in the road, the light in the tunnel and the unexpected fudge in the unassuming loaf of bread that is life. Bear with The Night Flight Orchestra, and they will teleport you into the neverending sinful, neon-lit night by pure Swedish willpower. Those men and women won’t back down, but you know that they love you, even though they might come across as a tad too much at times."

Here's your gateway to all possibilities of listening and buying "Aeromantic II":
https://thenightflightorchestra.bfan.link/aeromantic-ii.ema

Together with this epic ride of an album, THE NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA have released a stunning video for their song "Change".

Watch it now

The band continues:
"Are you looking for a shiny surface? Are you looking for depth? Are you looking for the emerald arch that bridges the opposites? Look no further. The Night Flight Orchestra has landed once again, albeit briefly, to provide you with another slice of the meaning of life. Aeromantic II will leave you shaken and stirred, but at the same time euphoric and enlightened. The Swedish rogues will bring the disco to the wastelands, the sweltering sun to the ghostly marshes and the fairy dust to the seemingly hopeless. There is always a pulsating hedonistic heart in the middle of everyhing, and The Night Flight Orchestra gives you another roadmap full of clues and obscene illustrations, before taking off again on that journey that never ends, and that seems to be taking them nowhere and everywhere at the same time. But that’s also exactly why, on that journey, everything seems to be possible"

Today, L.A.-based hard rock duo Satellite Citi self-releases their latest full-length effort Fear Tactics. The 10-track album showcases the band’s evolution and further cements their reputation as the next band to break big.

Helmed by producer Brad Wood (Smashing Pumpkins, Placebo, Liz Phair, Touche Amore), Fear Tactics sonically features a wide range of inspiration from Black Sabbath to Muse to Halestorm. And the message of the album thematically centers around the importance of mental health, while also representing the band’s own struggles of coping with fear and anxiety, even more apparent in today’s culture.

As Huffington Post has previously declared of the band, “Satellite Citi are on the road to delivering audiences with music that tackles important issues that our society is facing today.”

Their latest singles highlight this focal point for the band. Released in May, “Empath” is centered around the five stages of grief – Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance – and aimed to help end the stigma surrounding mental health. The acoustic version of the song premiered via MXDWN here: https://music.mxdwn.com/2021/06/11/news/mxdwn-premiere-satellite-citi-shine-a-light-on-mental-health-in-new-video-for-empath/

In late 2020, Satellite Citi also released “Antibody,” featuring Crobot’s Brandon Yeagley, dedicated to the people of Armenia and bringing awareness to the latest attacks on the country beginning in late September 2020 that killed hundreds of innocent civilians and displaced thousands more. See the evocative music video premiered by Loudwire here: https://loudwire.com/satellite-citi-antibody-video/

The band, featuring drummer/vocalist Anna Gevorkian and guitarist Shaunt Sulahian, are both Armenian-Americans born and raised in Los Angeles. They first launched Satellite Citi in 2015 and Fear Tactics continues their promising trajectory.

Fear Tactics can be ordered via the band’s Bandcamp page: https://satelliteciti.bandcamp.com/

Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door, and a percentage of ticket sales will be donated to Sweet Relief Musicians Fund and the Check Your Head Podcast in support of mental health and music industry professionals in need. A regular fixture on the stages in their hometown of Los Angeles, Satellite Citi is joined live by two anonymous Spacewalkers on bass and guitar that further taps into the band’s curiosity of other realms and advanced life forms. The band’s name, in fact, is based off of the idea of a city, outside of our galaxy, where people communicate with their minds.

In addition to music, Anna and Shaunt love video games and writing—they are currently working on their first original sci-fi graphic novel called Spacewalker with former DC editor Jim Higgins, that will coincide with a new concept EP in 2022. Satellite Citi also has five songs featured in the recently released rock documentary Long Live Rock…Celebrate The Chaos, directed by Jonathan McHugh, that features bands such as Metallica, Korn, Slipknot, and Rob Zombie. The trailer can be viewed HERE. As well the band’s song “Getaway” is featured in the new show “The Freak Brothers,” starring Woody Harrelson, John Goodman and Tiffany Haddish.

British rock legends Thunder have shared a new live video for their track ‘Destruction’, recorded as part of their Thunder TV special which streamed earlier this year, which features as part of the upcoming expanded edition of their most recent album ‘All The Right Noises’ out on 24th September 2021 on BMG.

Filmed at Siyan Studios in High Wycombe, the webcast of this unique performance was streamed for 48 hours on the weekend of the album’s release. The show was comprised of a set list of almost all the tunes from the new album, plus some of their biggest hits, a Zoom Q&A with fan club members, and set changes from plugged in electric to sit down acoustic. The 90 minute set was a runaway hit with Thunder fans all over the globe. Classic Rock said of it ‘Thunder are in prime form, obviously loving performing again, and throughout they accentuate the special in this TV special’.

Thunder founders Danny Bowes and Luke Morley will also embark on a UK Tour in November 2021. The shows will be based around the bandmates’ new book ‘Danny & Luke – The First 50 Years (1971-2021)’, which is released in September, and tell their story from when they first met at secondary school to achieving success with Thunder, and right up to present day.

Thunder will play 2 festive Xmas shows at KK’s Steel Mill in Wolverhampton on December 17th & 18th.

The Thunder arena shows will begin in May 2022, culminating on May 28th at the SSE Wembley Arena in London.

Ireland's Cat Dowling signs to FIFA Records and reveals new video for 'Freedom'

“Remarkable-voiced Cat Dowling's solo debut considerably exceeds expectations and previous endeavours, delivering an impressive collection of slow-burning melancholic indie rock” ~ Sunday Business Post

“It's her incredible vocals that resonate. When mercurial, she is reminiscent of the gutsy Karen O. When the pace slows, the respectful tone evokes Kristin Hersh” ~ Sunday Times

"Cat Dowling’s vocals, melodicism and pop sensibility are brilliant... introspective and heartfelt... passionate and liberating" ~ Big Takeover Magazine

“The strongest collection of her career. She has exceeded expectations with an LP throbbing with anger and ennui” ~ Irish Times, Irish Independent

“An artist with a lot to say and plenty of bewitching ways to say it. Excellent” ~ RTE

“Truly a talent we can now believe in” ~ Mail on Sunday

Dublin-based Kilkenny-born indie pop artist Cat Dowling has signed to Ireland's Forever In Financial Arrears Records or FIFA Records, as it is more commonly known. She will release her next album in autumn via the steadily expanding label, who have continuously worked with exciting new Irish talent (Fight Like Apes, One Morning in August, Klubber Lang, Hope is Noise, Dae Kim, Lorraine Nash), as well as releasing material from more established names on the Irish indie scene, such as The Frank & Walters, Emperor of Ice Cream, August Wells, Power of Dreams and Whipping Boy.

Lauded as one of the most wonderful and evocative vocalists in Irish contemporary music, Cat Dowling's beautifully dark pop songs and those husky and achingly intimate vocals will grip you from the outset. The former Babelfish and Alphastatesfrontwoman creates well-crafted songs that inspire.

Dowling also presents the video for her lush slice of soulful pop perfection, 'Freedom', created by film-maker Alba Lahoz. When restrictions momentarily lifted in Ireland, Cat's three free-spirited tearaway children do their thing, showing that Freedom is a space inside us that can never be tamed.

"Sometimes we think big. Sometimes we think small. Sometimes we think with all we have got. When we have limited access to other humans, the humans closest to us are the most important humans of all," says Cat Dowling.

"This video was filmed on a bitingly-cold December afternoon when light was sparse, winds howled and the skies randomly opened. We managed to find the sun, fell in love with the wind and forgot about the camera. It was mainly filmed on Donabate beach and Dollymount Strand in Dublin. Freedom is best explained and expressed in childhood when there are no limitations, everything is possible and we are free to be truly ourselves".

Produced by Gerry Horan with Dowling as co-producer, and mixed by Ger McDonnell (The Cure, U2, Van Morrison, Martha Wainwright, Shane McGowan, Sinead O'Connor), Dowling's latest output was partially recorded at Crossroads Studio in Kilkenny with support from Ireland's Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sports and Media.

Earlier this year, Dowling released the first single ‘Trouble’, making quite a big splash in her homeland, with a fantastic video by BAFTA award-winning director Fergal Costello. Based on a black comedy concept, it was filmed in winter in the Wicklow mountains, telling the story of a dark, comedic and violent tale that takes place outside of Belfast in 1981.

In 2013, Dowling debuted with ‘The Believer’ LP, ranked in numerous ‘Best of Year’ music polls, including The Sunday Times. The title track featured in the second series of ‘Banshee’, produced by Alan Ball (Six Feet Under, American Beauty, True Blood) and the ‘Witches of East End’ TV series, featuring Julia Ormond. The song ‘Somebody Else’ was also used in ‘My name is Emily’. Cat has also lent vocals on many collaborative projects, including for ABC’s ‘How To Get Away With Murder’ with Emmy-winning actress Viola Davis.

'Freedom' is out now, available everywhere digitally, including Spotify, Apple Musicand Bandcamp. Fans can expect Cat Dowling's next long-player to be released in November of this year.

Inca Babies' Harry Stafford and Brazilian guitarist Marco Butcher release 'Bone Architecture' LP and video for 'Termite City'.

"Unapologetically weaving their way through varied genres, Stafford & Butcher’s bluesy story-based music is raw around the edges, while sucking you willingly inside – a sonic diamond in the rough, so to speak" ~ The Spill Magazine

"The symmetry between the two artists is remarkable... a refreshing track, meshing the grit of blues with an urban thematic. This is dirty but agreeable, weaving straightforward guitar work through the prism of a junkyard instrument approach. Goes down smooth like a good shot of bourbon" ~ Big Takeover Magazine

Manchester underground music icon Harry Stafford and US-based Brazilian guitarist Marco Butcher present the new 'Bone Architecture' album, a 12-track effort, made possible thanks to the power of the internet.

Despite the distance, Stafford and Butcher are punk soul brothers from the same muddy musical pond. Connecting during a year of ‘lockdown hell’ inadvertently led to their collaboration. Marco's tracks were recorded at his Boombox Studio. Harry laid down vocals, piano and other instruments at Black Lagoon Records. London trumpet supremo Kevin Davy added jazz tones into the mix.

“There’s something about collaborating that is pure magic to me, cause you're not sharing ideas at the same time and you're in the moment. There’s something about the not knowing what the other will bring . . the surprise factor. The fact that music is very elastic and not always the way ya listen to it in your mind but something else, something cooler, greater," says Marco Butcher.

'Bone Architecture' is a superb collection of songs that is raw and, at times, an unforgiving forage into urban punk blues with fuzzed up jazz and garage trash rock. Here, Harry and Marco’s styles have clashed magnificently into a powerful record that crosses a multitude of genres but with a dirty blues makeover. The LP includes reworked older material, brand-new compositions and even a dirty blues version of the Pink Floyd classic 'Arnold Layne'.

The duo have also revealed the video for 'Termite City', featuring Stafford riding through England's northern capital, half scoffing at it while fully loving it nevertheless.

“’Termite City’ is a celebration of the dirty city that always keeps standing no matter what people throw at it. Bombs, Riots, Scottish Football fans, Demolition, bad planning. People love this city and will do everything to protect it and despite their cynicism, they just can’t help themselves but be proud. Show a little love. A city is a termite tower with thousands of people all working to make their way in it. This termite Tower is Manchester; termites even build cathedral mounds," says Harry Stafford.

Earlier, Stafford and Butcher released 'There's Someone Tryin' To Get In', which has garnered the duo press attention and airplay in several dozen countries.

Best known as founder, guitarist and vocalist of Manchester post-punk gothic rockers Inca Babies, Harry’s two most recent solo albums ('Guitar Shaped Hammers' and 'Gothic Urban Blues') reflect a cooler, less frenetic vibe, leaning on piano, trumpets and blues guitar. All this made him the perfect collaborator to set words and lyrics to Marco’s sonic backdrop.

From Sao Paulo, Marco Butcher now lives in Winston Salem, North Carolina. A prolific artist, his acts include The Jam Messengers, Chicken Snake, and The Jesus and The Groupies. Professing the American underground of blues, jazz, rockabilly and screaming punk blues, he has collaborated with Hugo Race and members of Tex and the Horseheads, Pussy Galore, Gumball, The Gories, Gibson Brothers, Jerry Teel, The Oblivians and The Workdogs.

On September 3, the 'Bone Architecture' LP will be released on CD and will also be available everywhere online, including Spotify and Apple Music. Both formats can be ordered via Bandcamp and the Louder than War shop.

ARCHSPIRE Premieres Title Track from New Album, 'Bleed the Future'

Canadian tech death masters ARCHSPIRE will be releasing their new full-length album, 'Bleed the Future,' on October 29, 2021 via Season of Mist! The band is now premiering the pummeling title track from the offering, which can be heard below.

ARCHSPIRE comments: "ALL ABOARD!!! The Archspire train keeps rolling today with a new single, 'Bleed the Future!' We've donned our conductor hats and overalls, and we're speeding at 400BPM to give you a taste of our upcoming album! We hope you CHOO-CHOOSE! to pickup a pre-order package; fuel for this engine doesn't pay for itself!"

In addition to a European and UK tour this November, the band will be playing an album release show in their hometown of Vancouver, B.C. at the Rickshaw Theatre on October 30! Tickets can be found HERE.

'Bleed the Future' is available now for pre-orders at THIS LOCATION.

Archspire’s JUNO-Nominated (Canadian Grammy) 2017 Relentless Mutationwas a cavalcade of speed and extremity — blasting, accelerating and, in partial reference to its title, “mutating” as each song unfolded, all the while rapid-fire, shotgun vocals blurred the lines between a man’s throat and additional instrument. It was, unquestionably, an innovation of sound and technique — Archspire had broken the speed barrier while creating songs memorable as they were unabashedly extreme for extreme metal. Thus, the pressure was already there to top Relentless Mutation when the band started to compile new songs in 2018. The global pandemic heightened the situation (read: no touring, expanded free time) and caused Archspire to turn inward and apply additional rigor to their songwriting process, albeit painstakingly so. But by the end of the fraught calendar year that was 2020, the band emerged with their fourth studio album, Bleed the Future

According to the members of Archspire — vocalist Oli Aleron, guitarists Dean Lamb and Tobi Morelli, bassist Jared Smith and drummer Spencer Prewett — they originally went into the making of Bleed the Future under the idea they would finish the album in between the various tours scheduled for 2020. Of course, none of that happened, prompting the band to do more pre-production than at any time in their career. Archspire then subjected the album’s eight songs to near-constant critiquing that ensured they came away with a product, that in their estimation, is their best to date.

“The benefit we had was that Relentless came out in 2017,” says Lamb. “Since then, we toured more than we ever did before. We had the viewpoint of ‘What do crowds like? What parts should we write more of? What parts do people give us good feedback on?’ We wanted to expand and write those parts more consistently — there are more hooks and when we do have hooks, we wanted to repeat those parts so people will know that this is the catchy part of the song.”

“The most important thing was that we had clever songwriting,” adds Prewett. “We wanted the album to be more accessible to more people but still keep it extreme, fast and technical. So, we changed our process this time. We recorded rehearsal every day and listened to what we did afterward. We’d then come back to the jam spot and change riffs and ideas based on what everyone was thinking about during the week. It resulted in an album that everyone was happier with.”

Archspire also had the stated goal for Bleed the Future that they wanted to get faster. While such a feat may defy reason given their previous output, the band wrote their fastest song to date — the album-closing “A.U.M.,” a cut that opens up with an audio recording of a German friend of Prewett’s who, according to the drummer, enjoys ragging on Archspire. Comedic clips aside, “A.U.M.,” caps off an album that pushes the boundaries of speed but also is textured — Smith’s ethereal basslines often serve as mid-song interludes, while Lamb and Morelli weave melodic, spiraling guitar lines that annihilate the fretboard during “Abandon the Linear,” “Bleed the Future” and “Acrid Canon.” Accordingly, the members of Archspire were keenly aware of the expectations placed upon them after the success of Relentless Mutation. The online comments regarding whether they could top

Relentless Mutation was also occasionally on their minds when composing Bleed the Future and prompted the band to ensure that all five members were happy with everything — down to the last riff, vocal line, bass run and drum pattern. “Audience expectation is really important,” says Lamb. “If we leave the jam spot and everyone is stoked on a song, it’s pretty likely that the audience will be stoked. We have the expectation of the audience but we also have to be pumped on the music. I feel the proudest of the music. We spent more time on the songs and got better at writing. I feel it’s better music.”

“It’s an extremely tedious writing process,” adds Smith. “If anyone isn’t feeling a riff, we scrap it and have to find something we’re all happy with. It can be super-frustrating in the moment, but in the end, we have something better. We want everything we write to be a step up and I think we achieved that with Bleed the Future.”

The album is accompanied by a concept developed by Aleron that begs the question: What happens when humans start giving birth to non-humans? Born from a weird dream the vocalist had, Bleed the Future’s concept does not have finality or a conclusion. It does, however, posit a few ethical dilemmas to ties into Archspire’s long-running science fiction themes.

“I thought about what if those things they were giving birth to could actually benefit them in the future so they wouldn’t want to reject them,” says Aleron. “What would happen to the humans that weren’t born? Would they go to a different dimension? I played with that whole idea because I hadn’t seen a horror movie where that was the theme. It worked for all the songs. The only social commentary is that people don’t know what they’re giving birth to — if you put someone on this planet, you don’t know whether they’re going to be good or evil.”

Bleed the Future was recorded in October and November 2020 at Flatline Audio in Colorado with producer/engineer Dave Otero. This was the second consecutive album the band worked with Otero. According to Morelli, the recording process was seamless. “Dave was already familiar with what we each can do individually,” he says. “This time, he was more prepared to tackle those elements. How he tracks was more focused on what we were capable of and I think it really shows here.”

As live show activity for 2021 hangs in the balance (Archspire currently has dates lined up for November), the pandemic has prompted many bands to re-think their new album release dates as well as how to stay visible in a world currently without touring. But, with a fanbase that has embraced the band’s online presence that includes playthroughs, tutorials and now, cooking shows (!), Archspire heads into the Bleed the Future album cycle the benefactors of their commitment to touring and, most of all, position as one of death metal’s most forward-thinking bands.

“We have a lot of awesome fans, so I think they’ll be there to support us and pick up the album because they like the music,” says Lamb. “We’re a self-managed band; we’ve been working with the same label for ten years and I think the outcome will be good. Would it had been better if we had been on a full North American tour starting a week before the album release? Sure, but I think people will come out and support us through other means. As soon as we’re ready to go back on tour and everybody is safe to do so, we’ll be out there.”

Al Jourgensen Discusses Inspiration For “Search And Destroy” Cover In New Video Interview; From The Upcoming Ministry Album M

Unique Take On The Stooges Hit

Features Guitarist Billy Morrison &

Music Video Shot By Legendary Dean Karr

From The Upcoming Album Moral Hygiene,

Out October 1 Via Nuclear Blast Records

Preorders Available Now

Last month, Ministry premiered the music video for the new track “Search And Destroy” via Rolling Stone. The song is a unique take on The Stooges’ hit that offers a uniquely slowed down tempo and frontman Al Jourgensen’s guttural howl that amplifies the song’s wartime critique.

In this new video interview, released today, Jourgensen discusses the inspiration for the cover, featuring Billy Morrison (Billy Idol, Royal Machines) who worked closely with Al to hone Ministry’s version. It was an idea they came up with after teaming up on the track in a moment of accidental kismet at the Above Ground benefit concert in Los Angeles in 2019.

Hear Al Jourgensen discuss “Search And Destroy” in detail in the new interview video here: https://youtu.be/q2rX3WwXzWs

See the music video for “Search And Destroy” Below.

“Search And Destroy” will appear on Ministry’s upcoming 15th studio album Moral Hygiene, which will be released via Nuclear Blast Records on October 1. With some of Ministry’s strongest and most inspired material to date, the 10 tracks are a follow-up to 2018’s lauded AmeriKKKant and put forth Jourgensen’s societal manifesto and plea for civilization to get back to a set of standards that lives up to and embraces our humanity.

Moral Hygiene also includes the previously released “Good Trouble” (a tribute to late Congressman and Civil Rights icon John Lewis) as well as “Alert Level” that sounded the alarms about our collective dissonance towards the pandemic, climate change and the man formerly in the White House, bolstered by the song’s overarching question posed to listeners: “How concerned are you?”

Moral Hygiene was recorded with engineer Michael Rozon (also behind the boards on AmeriKKKant) at Scheisse Dog Studio, Jourgensen’s self-built home studio and creative lab. As with all Ministry albums, all songs are written and performed by Al Jourgensen. Additional contributions come from Billy Morrison (Billy Idol, Royal Machines), Cesar Soto (Man The Mute), John Bechdel (Killing Joke, Fear Factory), Roy Mayorga (Stonesour, Soulfly, Nausea), Paul D’Amour (Tool, Feersum Ennjin),Arabian Prince (N.W.A.), Jello Biafra (Dead Kennedys) and sitar player Flash.

Moral Hygiene will be available in CD, vinyl and digital download formats. Pre-orders are available at the follow links:

ABOUT MINISTRY

Born in 1981 in Chicago, Ministry has been the lifetime passion project of founder Al Jourgensen, considered to be the pioneer of industrial music. In its early days, Ministry was identifiable by its heavy synth-pop material in line with the new sounds and technology that were being developed in the ‘80s. Ministry’s output began with four 12” singles on Wax Trax! Records in 1981 before the first LP With Sympathy in 1983 via Arista Records. As time progressed however, so did Ministry, quickly developing a harsher, and more stylized sound that the band soon became infamous for on seminal albums Twitch (1986), The Land of Rape and Honey (1988), and The Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Taste (1989). With the release of Psalm 69: The Way to Succeed and The Way to Suck Eggs (1992), Ministry hit an all-time high in the mainstream musical realm and received its first Grammy nomination. In total, Ministry has been nominated for a Grammy award six times. Eight more albums would follow before an indefinite break in 2013, only to be unearthed again in 2018 with AmeriKKKant, continuing to reflect Jourgensen’s views on the frightening state of society and politics. Today, Ministry continues touring and recording with the brand-new 15th studio album Moral Hygiene to be released October 1.

VELVET INSANE Release Lyric Video for "Space Age DJ" - New Album 'Rock N Roll Glitter Suit' Out Now!

VELVET INSANE Release Music Video for "Sound of Sirens"

New Album 'Rock n' Roll Glitter Suit' out July 16

Velvet Insane are following up the success of their new album 'Rock N’ Roll Glitter Suit' with a lyric video for the track “Space Age DJ”. The band comments:

”This video is a tribute to all the music that We love and everything we are. It’s a magnificent piece of art made by our good friend Martin Sweet from Crashdiet.”

Velvet Insane formed in 2013 as a four-piece outfit, but by the time of their self-titled debut album, they were billed as a duo. The first album took them around the world touring Europe, Japan, the USA & Australia.

Their critically acclaimed debut was a fresh mix between classic rock, pop, inches of folk influences and it also contained traces of early 70’s British glam rock. And the band kept walking that glam track and now they’re back as a trio and this time it’s glam glitter boogie all over.

They hired the cult glam rockers Diamond Dogs frontman Sulo as a producer and together they’ve created a bright shining monster. The 11-track-long 'Rock ’n’ Roll Glitter Suit' sounds, breathes, and swaggers like it was made in London 1973. Smooth pop harmonies pumped up by heavy drums and barbed wire guitars and a singer that wear it well. It brings back memories of a time when Slade, TREX, Bowie & Roxy Music were topping the charts.

From the catchy singalong choruses of the pop gems “Velvet Tongue”, “Riding the Skyways” & “Sound of Sirens” to the frantic boogie energy in barroom stompers “Driving Down the Mountain”, “Backstreet Liberace” & “Space Age DJ”, it’s the real thing. You also get a glimpse of Ziggy Stardust in the acoustic ballad “Midnight Sunshine Serenade”.

Velvet Insane are a band that plays with their hearts on their sleeves and its satisfaction guaranteed. Dregen and Nicke Andersson from The Hellacopters jump in the backseat in “Backstreet Liberace” and just like Rolling Stones honoured the tradition of Muddy Waters blues Velvet Insane takes on the job to keep rock ’n’ roll alive.

The club has for many years been known for developing and cultivating extraordinary talent, as the men's team currently plays in first division, the second tier of the Norwegian football league system. Now, Sogndal Football Club is paying tribute to the band that has brought Sognametal to the whole world, by putting the logo of metal veterans and forefathers VREID on the chest of player’s uniforms for this upcoming season.

ICYMI: VREID has recently appeared on Norway's TV2, the biggest commercial news station in the country! The clip spotlighted the band's 'Into the Mountains of Sognametal' livestream, which attracted over 140,000 fans from all over the world when it premiered in June of 2020, as well as the band's ambitious upcoming album and film. The TV2 news item can be seen HERE.

'Wild North West' is out now! The album is available to be streaming, downloaded, or purchased at THIS LOCATION.

From its tumultuous inception, the Norwegian metal scene has always been about pioneering. While embracing the illustrious black metal history as part of their musical heritage, the many iconic bands have now evolved in various directions. Leading the black ‘n roll movement in Norway, VREID are the perfect example of that. The band arose in 2004 from the ashes of WINDIR after the tragic perishing of Terje ‘Valfar’ Bakken. The Sognametal legends declared the mission of exploring new musical paths, which they have pushed to even greater heights on their new record ‘Wild North West’.

The ninth record is not just a collection of songs, but a concept album that developed alongside an entire movie. Throughout eight chapters you will be taken on a journey deep into the mountains, to a dark place where the borders between reality and fantasy fade and where death is only one step behind you: The Wild North West. Not just in sheer size of the project but also in terms of music videography, creativity, and determination, VREID have done something truly unique and lifted their art to a new dimension.

On the concept, founder and bass player Jarle Hváll Kvåle states: "Wild North West is a concept story about life itself and its eternal shadow: death. It is built around the world of our fictional character E, but it is surely inspired by my own life, my band’s life, historical events and many tales that have inspired me over the years. Is it a true story or fictional?I would have to say both, and sometimes is hard tell the difference.”

‘Wild North West’ features the most extreme and intense work of the band to date, as well as heavy and melodic rock songs. These influences have always been a part of VREID’s DNA, and it is this combination that makes up the spirit of Sognametal. A remarkable homage to that same musical spirit is the song “Into the Mountains”. The ideas for that track were written in 2002 by Jarle ‘Hváll’ Kvåle and Terje ‘Valfar’ Bakken (WINDIR). Inspired by these ideas, Hváll wrote the song and included the original demo keyboard tracks from 2002, recorded back then by Valfar.

VREID have always chosen a course of constant evolution that is marked by thematically denoted phases regarding their often historically inspired lyrics. This became particularly clear with albums ‘I Krig’ (2007) and ‘Milorg’ (2009), which both revolved around concepts dealing with resistance and liberation of Norway during World War II. With their following three records, the pitch black brigade returned to their Norse roots on ‘Sólverv’ which received high critical acclaim in 2015.

In 2018, the Norwegians teamed up with Season of Mist for their previous full-length ‘Lifehunger’, a record that successfully blended elements of 70’s rock, 80’s classic metal, and Norwegian black metal and which featured a remarkable guest contribution from SÓLSTAFIR’s vocalist Addi Tryggvason on the track “Hello Darkness”.

VREID have hammered out their success partly by being a heavily touring band. The four-piece performed more than 500 shows in 25 countries so far. Their everlasting march to conquer new territories has led the Norwegians to headline tours in Europe, North America, Japan, and India.

The band’s onward march did not come to a halt in 2020, a year that will go down as devastating for the international music scene. VREID launched their own beer, which turned out to be the biggest success of the Balder Brewery as the first batches were sold out immediately. Instead of waiting to be able to tour again, the Norwegians invited the fans to their home region and hosted a massive streaming concert among the beautiful mountainous surroundings of the Sognefjord. The concert, ‘Into the Mountains of Sognametal’ took place in June 2020 was viewed by over 140.000 people from more than 40 countries.

In 2021, VREID will once more invite the fans to their dark, cold, and wild universe but tread carefully as from these haunted mountains, no man can descend.

Welcome to the Wild North West.

Pagan Metal Legends BORNHOLM Unveil Sinister New Single + Video “I Am War God” from New Album “Apotheosis”

Pre-Order NOW!

Unveil Sinister New Single + Video for “I Am War God”

Watch below.

With over 20 years of experience and five studio albums under their belts, Hungarian black/pagan metal outfit BORNHOLM are no longer strangers to the scene. Now, the band is ready to present their exciting Napalm Records debut and brand-new, fifth studio album, Apotheosis, out November 5, 2021.

Ever since bursting onto the scene in 2000, BORNHOLM has been an unstoppable force in the black and pagan metal realms, touring with household names like Ex Deo, Varg, Arkonaand many more. With their upcoming offering, Apotheosis, the unit is ready to take its career to another level and set the stage with sinister first single “I Am War God”. Mixing significant, ground-shaking black metal elements, ruthless growling and heroic pagan accents, the band absolutely showcases their variety and sonic progression.

BORNHOLM on “I Am War God”:

“The song is about the ancient instinct of war and destruction of human kind, like a chisel in the hand of the sculptor forming the world when the time comes from century to century. We live hard and historical times and it’s gonna be harder than we could ever imagine. The wheels are turning by giant and ancient powers and this is what the lyrics are about. The will is the only thing that really creates, that moves the events forward… the will against will.”

Sahsnot (Guitar/Vocals) comments:

“The video was shot among the majestic woods and century-old ruins of Sweden in two parts. At first the scenes with the band members, and after a couple of days, the actors and the storyline. This is our first video that was made by a professional director, Johan Bååth, who worked with Watain earlier for example.”

Hungarian metal outfit BORNHOLM merges atmospheric black and pagan metal into a sphere of obscurity!

Apotheosis not only showcases BORNHOLM’s tonal development, but also goes back to the origins of the band’s history and the heavy, often almost doomy influences mixed with indispensable atmospherically dark and raw flavor. Accompanied by sinister sacral sounds of historic proportions and a hypnotizing, incantatory chant, intro track "I Divine" heralds the dark ride to nowhere. It is precisely in the void between pagan and black metal that the sound finds its home, with tracks like “Spiritual Warfare” and “Black Shining Cloaks” - the latter of which featuring a magnificent guitar solo by Mike Wead (Mercyful Fate/King Diamond) - including its diabolic, atmospheric intro, “The Key to the Shaft of the Abyss”, representing the mellowness and extremes of the band. Along with the almost melodic borrowings and acoustic guitar inserts in combination with the pure rawness of “To the Fallen”, the record highlights the band’s variety and sonic progression. The title track “Apotheosis” is a slow, howling homage mixing aggressive, shrieking vocals and melodiously grim anecdotes. Album closer “Enthronement” closes the metaphorical and musical bracket and provides the 52-minute piece with a venerable, instrumental conclusion.

BORNHOLM add:

“So the day has come, the new album is coming! Its title is Apotheosis, which is a Greek originated word meaning deification, divinization and the glorification of a human to a divine level. It contains 11 tracks and drives deeper into our musical world and soul than ever before.

We had to deal with a lot of difficulties both in the studio and in our private life during the making, but somehow something was always guarding the birth of the record. Nothing stopped, not even for a single moment, no matter what happened. It was a great experience to go through this uprising while the world is going into another direction. We didn't lack anything; fate was with us - so the birth of the record was a sort of magical experience. Step by step, everything was in place in time and, without tolerating the outside world, we built another one for ourselves.”

On Apotheosis, the band has built a flowing, epochal sound concept that combines explosive guitar/bass lines with thunder-fast drums, spiced with choral elements and leading into a heavy blend, which BORNHOLM present successfully in all kinds of variations from track 1 to 11.

Recording and mixing took place at SuperSize Recording Studio in Hungary with the contribution of Viktor Scheer, with mastering completed by Maor Appelbaum, who has worked with bands like Dream Theater, Annihilator, Mayhem, Abbath and many more.

Der Weg einer Freiheit Unveils New Song, "Morgen"

German black metal experimentalists Der Weg einer Freiheit will be releasing a brand new-full length, 'Noktvrn,' on November 19 via Season of Mist! The band is now unveiling the first song, "Morgen," along with a music video, which was created by Guilherme Henriques. The clip can be found below.

The band comments: "'Morgen' is the track we chose for premiering the first sonic and visual piece of our new album, 'Noktvrn.' Being the first actual DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT music video ever, it perfectly supports the suppressing atmosphere the song transports, picturing the world in between reality and dreams, day and night, anxiety and hope, having control and losing grip. It's a big pleasure and relief for us to finally reveal the first new song after more than four years since the release of 'Finisterre' and lets us smilingly look back on the whole creation process of 'Noktvrn' that soon is ready to see the light of day."

'Noktvrn' is available for pre-ordering in the Season of Mist shop on CD digipak, Deluxe CD + DVD box, Vinyl and Cassette HERE. Pre-save the album HERE.

Progressive, avant-garde black metal experimentalists DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT have never stopped smashing through the boundaries of the genre they’ve called home since forming in early 2009. And with 2021 welcoming the release of fifth album, Noktvrn, the Germans are looking to expand the minds and perspectives of their ever-increasing fanbase, similar to how they pushed themselves in every element of the new album’s creation. Ironically, supporters being able to pay witness to the leaps and bounds the band has made over the course of 12 years, five albums and one EP and live recordings should count themselves lucky for being able to do so.

DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT may have existed and thrived over the course of that time, but forging on beyond its self-titled debut wasn’t part of guitarist/vocalist/mastermind Nikita Kamprad’s original plan.

Formed out of the ashes of black metal quartet FROSTGRIM and good time-lovin’ melodic deathcore posse, FUCK YOUR SHADOW FROM BEHIND, Kamprad and original vocalist Tobias Jaschinsky founded DER WEG EINER FREIHEITas an expression of both their love of black metal and the search for liberation through art, as evidenced by taking the idea of their moniker — which translates to ‘The Way of Freedom’ — to heart.

“FROSTGRIM could be seen as the direct predecessor to DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT,” says Kamprad, from his studio in Würzburg, in the state of Bavaria, “because it was Tobias, our former singer, and I. We had this black metal band together when we also had FUCK YOUR SHADOW FROM BEHIND. We were a part of both bands and when they split up, there was nothing left. For me, black metal was always the most important musical genre where I could see myself doing music. So, I created songs for myself and basically they became the first DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT album. It is officially self-titled, but it actually doesn’t have a title. It’s just Der Weg einer Freiheit because initially after I wrote and released that first album, the band was supposed to be over. But the feedback from friends, fans and the press was so immense and so many people wanted to see the band live and to see it continue, in the end, I was like ‘why not?’ There was no reason why I couldn’t go on with new stuff.”

Originally self-released, the debut was picked up by Viva Hate Records who then issued follow-ups in the form of the Agonie EP and second full-length, Unstille which were supported via appearances at name festivals such as Summer Breeze Open Air and Wolfszeit Festival as well as on European tours opening for the likes of WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, NEAERA. 2014 had DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT joining forces with Season of Mist for third album, Stellar which was issued a few months later in March of 2015.

With the label and a groundswell of support behind them, the band’s star continued to rise in Stellar’s shadow with showings at Wacken Open Air, Hellfest and Roadburn, a tour in support of MOONSPELL and their first headlining runs. 2017 saw the release of album number four, Finisterre, which continued the steady growth of the band’s profile. In addition to drawing bigger crowds at festivals and on tours, they ventured overseas for the first time, playing in Japan and Iceland.

“I was doing music for six or seven years when I started DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT and I was always in bands that would meet up and write in a rehearsal space, but I always wanted to have my own band. I had the opportunity to do my own thing and that’s why this band is called DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT because it’s basically about my way of achieving my own freedom. For some people that way is through sport or cooking or writing; for me, it was about writing music and lyrics.”

Twelve years on, Kamprad is taking advantage of the freedoms afforded to him as he strives to personify the band’s titular expression. Being joined by drummer Tobias Schuler, bassist Nicolas Ziska and guitarist Nicolas Rausch has made DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT more a unit than ever and allowed Kamprad to feel comfortable relinquishing his steely grip on the band’s creative reins during the writing process which began in late 2019 and was completed by September of 2020. This has allowed for vast differences in Noktvrn’s creation that have expanded the album’s overall breadth beyond black metal and extreme music to incorporate the influence and inspiration of classical composer Frédéric Chopin’s Nocturnes, his series of 21 so-called “night pieces.” This, in turn, birthed the album’s artistic mandate requiring that material only be created during the wee hours.

“I always wanted to do an album about the night and dreams and I’m really, really big fan of Chopin and his night pieces in general. For me, it made sense that this album should have a title that connects with this theme. To the left of me right now is a piano and some of Chopin’s sheet music for the Nocturnes. One day I probably looked at it and wanted to pay tribute to this great composer. That’s why we chose to write the title a little bit differently with the ‘k’ instead of a ‘c’ and a ‘v’ instead of a ‘u’ to make it more special. We also chose the ‘v’ in particular because it’s our fifth album and that’s the Roman numeral for five. It’s just something special we did with the name, even though we weren’t sure at first about the lettering because it can be seen as generic, especially in black metal. We have reasons that are deeper than what you see on the surface; not because we want to be ‘true’ — or ‘trve’ — or something,” he explains with a laugh.

The Chopin and classical music influences on Noktvrn are much more than surface cosmetics. Lilting acoustic guitar piece ‘Finisterre II’ opens the album. Jericho-like horns are the bleating accent to the proggy black metal of ‘Monument.’ Baroque arpeggiation familiar to the tuxedo-and-coat tails crowd are spiralled around Oslo’s Helvete shop in ‘Morgen.’ There are also tendrils of folk, shoegaze and indie rock that make brief and appropriate appearances, but it’s the night-time theme that runs deep as Kamprad discovered early on in the writing process.

“‘Immortal’ was one of the first songs I wrote for the album and it was really, really weird because I wrote the song when it was very, very late when I fell into a night-time rhythm that was not my usual rhythm. Here, I felt I was having different kinds of dreams and thoughts. Sometimes I’d be half-awake, half-asleep and not really aware of what my real state of mind was. That was an experience that made me think about giving the entire album the nocturnal or night theme. I’m a very passionate sleeper; I love sleeping and dreaming and dreams are important to me because there’s a freedom in them. In this night rhythm, my head was in a different state and I wanted to create in this state because it was something different for me.”

Lyrically, Noktvrn has Kamprad taking enormous steps outside what has become his regular modus operandi since he took over the mic following Jaschinsky’s departure in 2012. The new album has him expanding his reach beyond not only his usual collection of personal thoughts and mother tongue, but also the style and texture with which he would previously deliver his meanings, ideas, and recollections.

“Usually, the lyrics have mainly been about myself, but on this album there were two events in the last two or three years connected to anxiety attacks. I haven’t experienced them myself, but a couple people who are very close to me have. The lyrics for the song ‘Am Rande der Dunkelheit’ are based around these people’s experiences and them telling me how they felt in a situation where they think they can’t breathe, that they think they’re dying and their life is coming to an end. I tried to imagine through the lyrics how they might have felt. I was trying to find my own words to describe the experience while trying to describe it if I had lived it myself.

“Another completely new thing on this album are the songs ‘Immortal’ and ‘Haven’ which are in English, which we’ve never done before. I always wanted to sing in English ever since I took over the vocals. Singing is the most direct musical expression I feel. Playing guitar is cool, but singing is even more my thing and I always want to push the boundaries so I implemented clean singing as well but, for me, doing clean vocals is very uncomfortable and difficult in German. I think singing clean vocals in English sounds nicer because German is a hard language which fits the harsh vocals perfectly. I wanted to try it out to see how it felt, and surprise, surprise, it felt great! I really like it and imagine there will be more English lyrics in the future.”

Barring a pair of live albums, all previous DER WEG EINER FREIHEITreleases were created almost entirely from the ground up by Kamprad. He would write the songs on his own and do the bass, guitar and vocal tracks himself with Schuler playing drums while engineering, producing and mixing along the way. Kamprad may still be the songwriter-in-chief who produced and mixed Noktvrn (with assistance from Jan Kerscher), but this album makes a significant developmental step as it not only welcomes song writing contributions from the other members, but has the band ably demonstrating their ability by recording live off the floor.

“The new album is the most natural sounding DER WEG EINER FREIHEITalbum,” he says excitedly, “not only the sound, but the riffing and because we recorded the songs live. Music today, especially metal, can be too difficult and technical for bands to even play and record their own songs from start to finish. For me it was very important during the song writing to focus on playing the songs all the way through without stopping. That created a very natural flow through the songs and throughout the whole album. Also, it was a new thing that the whole band was involved in the whole recording process and the last stages of the song writing. Writing and recording mainly by myself was a very exhausting and streamlined process that I liked at some points, but after Finisterre I couldn’t do that anymore and had to change something.

“I still wrote the songs here in my studio then showed them to the others,” he explains. “Then, we met up for rehearsal and pre-production and played through the songs, recorded them and really analysed all the small details, the iteration of parts, the transitions, the guitar sound, the drum beats and everything, even the cymbal hits! What came out were still my songs, but with all kinds of input from the guys. They’re the same songs, but going over all the details brings them to another level. When we entered the studio all we had to do was focus on playing and nothing else because everything was settled already. That was a new and very good experience for us as a band.”

All of the above makes Noktvrn a beacon of musical forward thought, drastic jumps and transformative risks. In his soft-spoken humble manner, Kamprad laughs at the idea that DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT is little more than a personal expression vehicle; instead, he refers to the band as “a very professional hobby,” while downplaying what makes these black metal mavericks entirely special.

“Maybe what is the special thing about us is that we never stopped. Since the beginning, we haven’t taken a break and we’ve always tried to be present with tours and shows and festivals, so there was never a break.”
