Irish underground quartet Sons of Southern Ulster and Pete Briquette (The Boomtown Rats) are gearing up for the release of their 'Turf Accountant Schemes' EP is. Ahead of this, they preview the track 'Live In The Past'.

The 'Turf Accountant Schemes' EP features four tracks from the band's second album 'Sinners and Lost Souls' (2020), each of them re-imagined and re-mixed by Briquette. The other three acerbic classics are 'Fear My Scorn', 'Stubby Yellow Fingers' and 'Polaris' (with video produced by Nicky Fennell), a stellar and invigorating track, mixing cinematic rock and spacious electronica with spoken word but with a sparseness that is chilling. Thematically, the song touches on regret, lost opportunity, death and, of course, alcohol – a recurring theme with the band.

Mixed / engineered by David Minehan (The Replacements, Buffalo Tom, Dropkick Murphys), produced by Daragh Dukes, and mastered by Richard Dowling at WavMastering (David Bowie, Brian Eno, Sinead O’Connor, Primal Scream, Suede, Interpol, Foo Fighters), this EP features striking artwork by acclaimed Danish artist Claus Castenskiold.

Formed around songwriters Justin Kelly and David Meagher, Sons of Southern Ulster released their debut album 'Foundry Folk Songs' in 2016. Many of their songs reflect the experience of growing up in a small southern border town (Bailieborough, County Cavan, Ireland) long before the internet and the country's “Celtic Tiger” rapid growth period. They explore themes of regret and disappointment, interspersed with moments of light and insight.

David Meagher delivers the perfect canvas against which these stories can be told with echoes of Gang of Four and a lifetime misspent listening to punk rock. But this is no one trick pony, this EP also bearing hints of Sparklehorse sprinkled throughout.

Pete Briquette is an Irish bassist, record producer and composer. A member of The Boomtown Rats, he has also played in Bob Geldof's band. Things have come first circle, so to speak, with Pete originally from Ballyjamesduff in County Cavan and the Sons from such a nearby community.

"In Sons of Southern Ulster, we took a very conscious decision to sing songs about Cavan as it was always a bit underserved, not just in music but in infrastructure and resources. In many ways, the Irish government ignored us and left us to our own devices – for better or worse. I think Pete picked up on that," says David Meagher.

As of August 27, the 'Turf Accountant Schemes' EP will be available across online platforms, including Apple Music and Spotify, as well as on vinyl. It can be ordered via Bandcamp.

CANNABIS CORPSE’s latest strain of weed-metal is another potent dose of bong ripping brutality laced with tasty riffs, vicious drumming, and powerful THC. With a title inspired by CRYPTOPSY’s seminal album, 'Nug So Vile' is a horrifying look into the mind of a hardcore marijuana abuser with the demented fantasies of a reefer addict fully on display. The record is more than just a mere follow up to 2017’s 'Left Hand Pass', but rather serves as a solid companion piece, seamlessly picking up right where the band left off.

Sharing a passion for marijuana and death metal, brothers Phil 'Landphil' Hall (MUNICIPAL WASTE, IRON REAGAN) and Josh 'Hallhammer' Hall formed CANNABIS CORPSE in 2006 in Richmond, VA as a loving homage to the genre’s forefathers. The brothers decided from the start to separate themselves from the pack by infusing a green sense of humour into their horror-inspired lyrics. Meanwhile, it has become a badge of honour for many of the Halls’ idols to have one of their titles parodied by the Richmond outfit.

Now, CANNABIS CORPSE has returned as a three-piece and despite slimming the line-up down since 'Left Hand Pass', 'Nug So Vile' still sounds as full and thick as ever, solidifying their place among death metal’s elite. So, roll a blunt, grab a neckbrace, and prepare yourself for another nasty assault from the kings of weed metal.

Blackened Death/Doom Offensive 1914 to Release New Album, “Where Fear and Weapons Meet”, out October 22, 2021

Watch the Video for New Single “...And A Cross Now Marks His Place”,

featuring Nick Holmes of Paradise Lost, below!

“We are not singing the songs, we are telling the stories!“

(1914)

Ukrainian WWI experts 1914 continue to reflect the gruesome tales of World War I, its soldiers’ fate, their death, fear and feats to be never forgotten, and unleash their new opus, Where Fear and Weapons Meet, out October 22, 2021 via Napalm Records.

Its eleven tracks of pure historic harshness follow up to the band’s sophomore full-length, The Blind Leading the Blind (2018), and debut, Eschatology of War (2015), both highly acclaimed amongst critics, and create a sophisticated variety of massively brutal blackened death metal accented by dramatic and realistic audio soundscapes and disquieting melodies spiced with the approach of sludge and doom!

Massive first single “...And a Cross Now Marks His Place” already marks an absolute highlight, as this stamping outburst features none other than Paradise Lost icon Nick Holmes, whose pervasive delivery matches with 1914’s mastermind Hptm. Ditmar Kumarberg’s (9. Westpreußisches Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 176) vocal harshness.

Hptm. Ditmar Kumarberg on the first song:

“The story behind “...And A Cross Now Marks His Place” totally captured me: This is the real letter, handwritten by the British officer to the mother of a soldier who died in action. This was not a standard form sent in thousands, but more like a personal message. He describes the way her son died, tells words of consolation, and emphasizes how the Crown is proud of him, another victim of the massacre between Empires.“

Watch the bone-shaking lyric video for “...And a Cross Now Marks His Place”

1914 break into their third offering with the intro “War In”, summed up by final “War Out”, and immediately build a common thread to the previous records. “War In” is the original of the most famous Serbian song of the Great War period, “Tamo Daleko”. Like World War I, the album begins in Serbia and continues on the first track from the prospective of Gavrilo Princip, who assassinated Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife on June 28, 1914 in Sarajevo and caused the outbreak of World War I.

What happens next is an intense, in-depth analysis of historical events, for example – Battle of Vimy Ridge, shameful pages of the British Empire history in the track “Coward” featuring Sasha Boole (Me And That Man), The Battle of Messines on “Pillars of Fire” or the infantry regiment, the Harlem Hellfighters, on “Don’t Tread On Me”. Authentic forces like ambient sonic war samplings transport these stories even further into the present and make Where Fear and Weapons Meet another heavily intense and deep-reaching output that will grant 1914 even higher appreciation than the five-piece is already credited with.

1914 on the album:

Where Fear and Weapons Meet continues the theme we started on The Blind Leading the Blind - with one major difference: these are the stories about hope where most of our characters are staying alive, becoming heroes, and returning back to their homes. Yes, it is still about fear, death, and senselessness of war, but the hope is the only thing the soldier holds on to. And a good portion of luck as well. Even the album cover reflects this - the man lays wounded, bleeding in the trench, reaching his hand to Death begging for relieve, and Death declines to take him. He deserves to live.

The album starts with the assassination in Sarajevo, leads you through the bloodiest moments of the Great War, and ends up with the monologue on a grave of a young man killed in his first battle. This time we did have even more hard digging into the historical background while making the tracks. We are not singing the songs, we are telling the stories!”

Der Weg einer Freiheit Shares Glimpse of New Music

German black metal experimentalists Der Weg einer Freiheit will be releasing a brand new-full length, 'Noktvrn,' on November 19 via Season of Mist! The band is now teasing a glimpse of the album's new music, which can be heard at THIS LOCATION.

The first track will be out on September 1, along with pre-sales for the album. 'Noktvrn' will be available on vinyl, clamshell box, CD, tape and digital.

Der Weg einer Freiheit has furthermore announced guest vocals by David Mako, also know as THE DEVIL'S TRADE, on the song "Immortal."

Progressive, avant-garde black metal experimentalists DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT have never stopped smashing through the boundaries of the genre they’ve called home since forming in early 2009. And with 2021 welcoming the release of fifth album, Noktvrn, the Germans are looking to expand the minds and perspectives of their ever-increasing fanbase, similar to how they pushed themselves in every element of the new album’s creation. Ironically, supporters being able to pay witness to the leaps and bounds the band has made over the course of 12 years, five albums and one EP and live recordings should count themselves lucky for being able to do so.

DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT may have existed and thrived over the course of that time, but forging on beyond its self-titled debut wasn’t part of guitarist/vocalist/mastermind Nikita Kamprad’s original plan.

Formed out of the ashes of black metal quartet FROSTGRIM and good time-lovin’ melodic deathcore posse, FUCK YOUR SHADOW FROM BEHIND, Kamprad and original vocalist Tobias Jaschinsky founded DER WEG EINER FREIHEITas an expression of both their love of black metal and the search for liberation through art, as evidenced by taking the idea of their moniker — which translates to ‘The Way of Freedom’ — to heart.

“FROSTGRIM could be seen as the direct predecessor to DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT,” says Kamprad, from his studio in Würzburg, in the state of Bavaria, “because it was Tobias, our former singer, and I. We had this black metal band together when we also had FUCK YOUR SHADOW FROM BEHIND. We were a part of both bands and when they split up, there was nothing left. For me, black metal was always the most important musical genre where I could see myself doing music. So, I created songs for myself and basically they became the first DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT album. It is officially self-titled, but it actually doesn’t have a title. It’s just Der Weg einer Freiheit because initially after I wrote and released that first album, the band was supposed to be over. But the feedback from friends, fans and the press was so immense and so many people wanted to see the band live and to see it continue, in the end, I was like ‘why not?’ There was no reason why I couldn’t go on with new stuff.”

Originally self-released, the debut was picked up by Viva Hate Records who then issued follow-ups in the form of the Agonie EP and second full-length, Unstille which were supported via appearances at name festivals such as Summer Breeze Open Air and Wolfszeit Festival as well as on European tours opening for the likes of WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, NEAERA. 2014 had DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT joining forces with Season of Mist for third album, Stellar which was issued a few months later in March of 2015.

With the label and a groundswell of support behind them, the band’s star continued to rise in Stellar’s shadow with showings at Wacken Open Air, Hellfest and Roadburn, a tour in support of MOONSPELL and their first headlining runs. 2017 saw the release of album number four, Finisterre, which continued the steady growth of the band’s profile. In addition to drawing bigger crowds at festivals and on tours, they ventured overseas for the first time, playing in Japan and Iceland.

“I was doing music for six or seven years when I started DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT and I was always in bands that would meet up and write in a rehearsal space, but I always wanted to have my own band. I had the opportunity to do my own thing and that’s why this band is called DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT because it’s basically about my way of achieving my own freedom. For some people that way is through sport or cooking or writing; for me, it was about writing music and lyrics.”

Twelve years on, Kamprad is taking advantage of the freedoms afforded to him as he strives to personify the band’s titular expression. Being joined by drummer Tobias Schuler, bassist Nicolas Ziska and guitarist Nicolas Rausch has made DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT more a unit than ever and allowed Kamprad to feel comfortable relinquishing his steely grip on the band’s creative reins during the writing process which began in late 2019 and was completed by September of 2020. This has allowed for vast differences in Noktvrn’s creation that have expanded the album’s overall breadth beyond black metal and extreme music to incorporate the influence and inspiration of classical composer Frédéric Chopin’s Nocturnes, his series of 21 so-called “night pieces.” This, in turn, birthed the album’s artistic mandate requiring that material only be created during the wee hours.

“I always wanted to do an album about the night and dreams and I’m really, really big fan of Chopin and his night pieces in general. For me, it made sense that this album should have a title that connects with this theme. To the left of me right now is a piano and some of Chopin’s sheet music for the Nocturnes. One day I probably looked at it and wanted to pay tribute to this great composer. That’s why we chose to write the title a little bit differently with the ‘k’ instead of a ‘c’ and a ‘v’ instead of a ‘u’ to make it more special. We also chose the ‘v’ in particular because it’s our fifth album and that’s the Roman numeral for five. It’s just something special we did with the name, even though we weren’t sure at first about the lettering because it can be seen as generic, especially in black metal. We have reasons that are deeper than what you see on the surface; not because we want to be ‘true’ — or ‘trve’ — or something,” he explains with a laugh.

The Chopin and classical music influences on Noktvrn are much more than surface cosmetics. Lilting acoustic guitar piece ‘Finisterre II’ opens the album. Jericho-like horns are the bleating accent to the proggy black metal of ‘Monument.’ Baroque arpeggiation familiar to the tuxedo-and-coat tails crowd are spiralled around Oslo’s Helvete shop in ‘Morgen.’ There are also tendrils of folk, shoegaze and indie rock that make brief and appropriate appearances, but it’s the night-time theme that runs deep as Kamprad discovered early on in the writing process.

“‘Immortal’ was one of the first songs I wrote for the album and it was really, really weird because I wrote the song when it was very, very late when I fell into a night-time rhythm that was not my usual rhythm. Here, I felt I was having different kinds of dreams and thoughts. Sometimes I’d be half-awake, half-asleep and not really aware of what my real state of mind was. That was an experience that made me think about giving the entire album the nocturnal or night theme. I’m a very passionate sleeper; I love sleeping and dreaming and dreams are important to me because there’s a freedom in them. In this night rhythm, my head was in a different state and I wanted to create in this state because it was something different for me.”

Lyrically, Noktvrn has Kamprad taking enormous steps outside what has become his regular modus operandi since he took over the mic following Jaschinsky’s departure in 2012. The new album has him expanding his reach beyond not only his usual collection of personal thoughts and mother tongue, but also the style and texture with which he would previously deliver his meanings, ideas, and recollections.

“Usually, the lyrics have mainly been about myself, but on this album there were two events in the last two or three years connected to anxiety attacks. I haven’t experienced them myself, but a couple people who are very close to me have. The lyrics for the song ‘Am Rande der Dunkelheit’ are based around these people’s experiences and them telling me how they felt in a situation where they think they can’t breathe, that they think they’re dying and their life is coming to an end. I tried to imagine through the lyrics how they might have felt. I was trying to find my own words to describe the experience while trying to describe it if I had lived it myself.

“Another completely new thing on this album are the songs ‘Immortal’ and ‘Haven’ which are in English, which we’ve never done before. I always wanted to sing in English ever since I took over the vocals. Singing is the most direct musical expression I feel. Playing guitar is cool, but singing is even more my thing and I always want to push the boundaries so I implemented clean singing as well but, for me, doing clean vocals is very uncomfortable and difficult in German. I think singing clean vocals in English sounds nicer because German is a hard language which fits the harsh vocals perfectly. I wanted to try it out to see how it felt, and surprise, surprise, it felt great! I really like it and imagine there will be more English lyrics in the future.”

Barring a pair of live albums, all previous DER WEG EINER FREIHEITreleases were created almost entirely from the ground up by Kamprad. He would write the songs on his own and do the bass, guitar and vocal tracks himself with Schuler playing drums while engineering, producing and mixing along the way. Kamprad may still be the songwriter-in-chief who produced and mixed Noktvrn (with assistance from Jan Kerscher), but this album makes a significant developmental step as it not only welcomes song writing contributions from the other members, but has the band ably demonstrating their ability by recording live off the floor.

“The new album is the most natural sounding DER WEG EINER FREIHEITalbum,” he says excitedly, “not only the sound, but the riffing and because we recorded the songs live. Music today, especially metal, can be too difficult and technical for bands to even play and record their own songs from start to finish. For me it was very important during the song writing to focus on playing the songs all the way through without stopping. That created a very natural flow through the songs and throughout the whole album. Also, it was a new thing that the whole band was involved in the whole recording process and the last stages of the song writing. Writing and recording mainly by myself was a very exhausting and streamlined process that I liked at some points, but after Finisterre I couldn’t do that anymore and had to change something.

“I still wrote the songs here in my studio then showed them to the others,” he explains. “Then, we met up for rehearsal and pre-production and played through the songs, recorded them and really analysed all the small details, the iteration of parts, the transitions, the guitar sound, the drum beats and everything, even the cymbal hits! What came out were still my songs, but with all kinds of input from the guys. They’re the same songs, but going over all the details brings them to another level. When we entered the studio all we had to do was focus on playing and nothing else because everything was settled already. That was a new and very good experience for us as a band.”

All of the above makes Noktvrn a beacon of musical forward thought, drastic jumps and transformative risks. In his soft-spoken humble manner, Kamprad laughs at the idea that DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT is little more than a personal expression vehicle; instead, he refers to the band as “a very professional hobby,” while downplaying what makes these black metal mavericks entirely special.

“Maybe what is the special thing about us is that we never stopped. Since the beginning, we haven’t taken a break and we’ve always tried to be present with tours and shows and festivals, so there was never a break.”

Cheers to all thrashers out there. Without your support and your passion, Destruction would not exist. Peace.”

"Silky fuzz and solid hooks echo The Smiths, Orange Juice and Teenage Fanclub with great enthusiasm, and they never fail to recreate that celestial guitar jangle" NME Magazine

"While The Persian Leaps frontman wasn’t intentionally writing around politics, injustices, or the impending pandemic, some of those pent up agitations and reflections trickle out of the band’s upcoming album Drone Etiquette” ~ American Songwriter

"Unpretentious and infectious... vast riffs, euphonious vocals and pop sensibility. captivatingly pleasurable blustery indie rock" – Louder Than War

“Full, satisfying... charmingly pleasant breezy indie rock" – Magnet Magazine

"Unassuming and infectious rocking & rolling power pop" – Impose Magazine

"Truncated treatises in big-guitar post-punk power-pop" – The Big Takeover

"Huge riffs echoing through your speakers, melodious vocals and the sort of pop sensibility we’ve come to expect from bands like Nada Surf" – Austin Town Hall

The Persian Leaps are back with their new single 'When This Gets Out', which was born of frustration during the Trump presidency. This track is a welcome taster of their new album 'Drone Etiquette', a 6-track offering to be released in autumn via Land Ski Records.

"Each week, it seemed there was a new Trump-related scandal that by rights should have sunk him. However, instead of consequences, the scandal would be eclipsed the next week by something even more appalling. After a while, people didn’t even bother to pay attention. 'When This Gets Out' imagines something big enough to cut through the apathy, alienate the enablers and apologists, and finally make a difference. Also, starting out the EP with the song seemed very appropriate. “When this gets out, the shit will hit the fans,” says Drew Forsberg.

Hailing from St.Paul - Minneapolis, The Persian Leaps has gone through various lineups but has always surrounded principal songwriter, vocalist and guitarist Drew Forsberg. Embedded on a magnetic alternative rock foundation, the latest musical output continues The Persian Leaps' tradition of producing power pop earworms with midwestern charm and an inherent element of 90s 'college rock'.

The band-name 'The Persian Leaps' came to Forsberg in a daydream during a college Greek Archaeology class. Writing solo music under that name for years, he finally assembled a band in 2012, thereafter releasing an EP of five songs every autumn until 2017. NME Magazine described their debut 'Praise Elephants' EP (2013) as “celestial guitar jangle”. From their sophomore 'Drive Drive Delay' EPin 2014 to their fifth 'Bicycle Face' EP, their music has been widely praised. Delivering one perfect power pop cocktail after another, they eventually released their 18-track 'Pop That Goes Crunch' anthology in 2018.

That year, the Leaps once again returned to their roots as a studio project, releasing the 'Electrical Living' LP in 2019 and the 'Smiling Lessons' EP in 2020 together with Jon Hunt, a musician and graphic designer who did the cover artwork for most of the band's releases to date.

During the 2020-2021 pandemic, Forsberg recorded 'Drone Etiquette' EP as a solo effort, primarily due to lockdown limitations. Drew Forsberg notes, "This EP was an especially difficult one to record and finish. Because of the pandemic, I was forced to abandon a lot of the comfortable processes I’ve used for years. The friends I collaborate with for recording and performances weren’t available in person because of health issues, so I tried a new approach. This time around, I recorded at a different studio and performed all the parts on the EP myself. I also got directly involved in editing the tracks for the first time, which took longer. Ultimately, though, I’m very happy with how the songs turned out. The EP doesn’t address the pandemic at all, but it’s very much a by-product of lockdown and what we all endured."

As of August 19, 'When This Gets Out' will be available exclusively via Bandcamp. On October 1, the full 'Drone Etiquette' album will be released on CD and online platforms, including Apple Music and Spotify. It is already available for pre-order via Bandcamp.

"I see my life in terms of music”

A powerful quote by the renowned genius Albert Einstein. This holds true for 14 year old Drummer and Progressive Rock songwriter Thomas Thunder. Barely in his teens, this young musician from Southern New England is here to prove that children can not only perform as a musician, but be a successful songwriter as well. With his intricate Progressive Rock songs that include odd time signatures and unique instrumentation he has captured the attention of fans as well as professional musicians.

Thomas began his journey as a musician when he started drum lessons at age five. He started playing in a performance band by age eight at School of Rock, and it was there that Thomas was inspired to start songwriting himself. At age 10 years old, Thomas released his first single, and he was awarded a prize in the Eventide Theater Songwriting competition. Thomas has also been featured on the British Prog Rockblog, participated in radio and Podcast interviews, and landed the cover of American Pride Magazine. He also has achieved three Number One hits on the independent music chart The Fabchart.

His love of Progressive Rock bands like Sons of Apollo, Dream Theater and Toolpermeate his songwriting. In fact, Thomas grabbed the attention of the ‘King of Keyboards’ Derek Sherinian (Sons of Apollo member; ex Dream Theater; Alice Cooper, etc) with his songs. Thomas has written several songs that feature one of his musical idols Derek Sherinian on keyboards. Not only has Derek contributed to Thomas’ songs but has produced them as well.

This superstar collaboration has solidified for Thomas to continue on the path as a musician and songwriter. Becoming a professional musician, performing live, and Prog Rock songwriting are his musical goals. Since age 12, his original music is published on all streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple and Amazon. Thomas also is a member of the high IQ society Mensa.

The future looks bright for Thomas Thunder!

Shameless bassist Alexx Michael is excited to announce the release of the tenth album, Live Your Dream

mail-116.jpeg

“Wait A Minute, Doc. Are You Telling Me You Built A Time Machine...Out Of A DeLorean?” - Back To The Future (1985)

Shameless bassist Alexx Michael is excited to announce the release of the tenth Shameless album, Live Your Dream, out now and available to order here: https://rockpapermerch.com/collections/shameless

This limited edition picture disc (300 copies worldwide) and cassette (200 copies worldwide) is released in conjunction with Michael's book Looking Inside : The Stainless Sensation, a 500 page deluxe bound definitive history of John DeLorean, the DMC 12 and the DeLorean Motor Company.

The picture disc features DeLorean themed graphics and features the new track “Live Your Dream” and a cover of “East Bound And Down” from the Smokey and the Bandit movie. The album's 10 tracks are rounded out by Shameless classics taking you back in their time machine to the heyday of 80s glam rock.

Reformed in 1998 with partner guitarist BC and help of drummer Eric Singer (Kiss, Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath), Shameless is notable for having numerous American rockers appearing on their albums. They have established themselves as a band that doesn’t give a damn that the 80s are over and continue to turn out good-natured party rock and roll, regardless of shifting musical tends and styles.

For Live Your Dream, Michael again teamed up with guitarist partner BC, Steve Summers (Pretty Boy Floyd) and Stevie Rachelle (Tuff). Due to the pandemic making in-person studio recording impossible, Michael recorded Live Your Dream through collaborations from all over the planet including Munich, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, St. Louis, Copenhagen and Auckland New Zealand. As always the list of guest musicians is endless. Bruce Kulick (Kiss) and Brian Tichy (Whitesnake, Ozzy) are featured on the title track “Live Your Dream” along with guest vocalist Charlotte Tybalt of Blue Ruin. Kulick again contributes guitar tracks on “East Bound And Down” joined by Jaret Reddick of Bowling For Soup on vocals. The rest of the disc is highlighted by appearances by Keri Kelli (Slash, Alice Cooper, Night Ranger), Tracii Guns & Steve Riley (L.A. Guns), Frankie Muriel (King Of The Hill), Michael Thomas (Beautiful Creatures, Adler's Appetite) among others.

SHAMELESS BIO

Shameless are a kick ass rock glam band formed in the Spring of 1989 by bassist Alexx “Skunk” Michael in Munich, Germany. After a breakup, Michael decided to reform Shameless in 1998 with his friend and guitar player BC. Alexx enlisted help from drummer Eric Singer (KISS, Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath), who's introduction to Steve “Sex” Summers (Pretty Boy Floyd) and Stevie Rachelle (Tuff) started a long lasting musical relationship,

OCEANHOARSE Premiere Brand New Music Video for "From Hell to Oblivion"! New album, "Dead Reckoning", out on No

Finland's very own OCEANHOARSE are about to get set for the release of their highly anticipated debut studio album, entitled Dead Reckoning, out this Friday on Noble Demon!

With former and current members of well-known acts like Amoral, Warmen and others, the foursome delivers exactly that kind of album you would hope to get from such experienced people. Featuring 13 tracks, loaded with crushing riffs, vocal harmonies and high voltage arrangements, Dead Reckoning shows a band willing to explore things in their very own style, instead of sticking to any kind of average formula.

In support of the new album and to celebrate the upcoming release in glorious style, OCEANHOARSE just unleashed a brand new video clip for the melodic and groove-laden heavy metal anthem "From Hell to Oblivion"!

Watch the video below

"From Hell to Oblivion” represents Oceanhoarse at its most melodic, and it just might feature the biggest chorus on the album. The lyrics talk about false lighthouses, the inability to see warning signs in advance and how history keeps repeating itself, usually in pretty depressing ways…" the band comments.

Dead Reckoning drops this Friday, August 20th on Noble Demon and is available for pre-save and pre-order at THIS LOCATION

THE HELLFREAKS Signs International Record Deal with Napalm Records!

Releases Blistering New Single + Music Video “Old Tomorrows

Better watch out! Hungary’s finest sonic-shifting punk/metal upstarts THE HELLFREAKS just signed an official record deal with Napalm Records!

THE HELLFREAKS on the signing:

“We’re thrilled and proud that we can reveal one of the biggest news in our history - our signing to Napalm Records! The last decade was a hell of a ride for us and especially the pandemic right after our latest album release hit us pretty hard. Who’d have thought that this could turn into such a happy end? But you can be sure that this is not the end, this is just the START! We can’t imagine a better partner of supporting our vision of music, of mixing metal aggression with the attitude of punk ✊

We always stood for strength and were the voice for those who are done with collecting more scars, but now we’re stoked on a whole new level and are ready to make all our freaks and our new label proud!”

With a stellar discography and millions of streams, THE HELLFREAKS have been on the insider tip for many fans around the globe. The band recorded their first demo in 2009, followed by the massive psychobilly-punk hit "Boogie Man" (the video has over six million streams on YouTube) and their debut album, Hell Sweet Hell. In 2014, it was time for change, and the band switched up its lineup, leaving their accustomed sound behind them for good. With more of a focus on punk-meets-metal, THE HELLFREAKS continued to hone their songwriting chops and grow their fanbase at the same time, culminating in the release of their critically acclaimed, fan favorite album, God On The Run (2020).

And THE HELLFREAKS wouldn't be themselves if they weren't equally hungry for more – immediately releasing a brand new single/video to announce the signing. “Old Tomorrows” is the perfect introduction with singer Shakey Sue's trademark catchy sing-along-screams and cleans with the band's high paced alt metal groove as the backbone, and is destined to become a punk rock anthem for new and longtime fans alike.

Watch the video for “Old Tomorrows

THE HELLFREAKS on the new single:

“With “Old Tomorrows” we would like to welcome you in our new era! If “Old Tomorrows” would get manifested, you would face an ageless architect who is planning an indestructible bridge between generations. Most of us grew up being told to respect our elders in any case. The box was ticked. But it’s just not working like that. As the world is changing quickly the gap between all generations is constantly growing. While elders are expecting respect for their experiences, youngsters feel unvalued, as their potential seems to be ignored. We’re pointing out each other's differences, while not seeing that the disrespect comes from the same root - we’re not doing things the same way. It’s time to accept that we’re not better than the other, but that we can get a better version of ourselves if we open our minds. “Young mistakers, old days chasers, let’s become generation breakers!””

Stay tuned - more to be announced soon!

THE HELLFREAKS are:

Zsuzsa Radnóti - Vocals

József Takács - Guitar

Gábor Domján - Bass

Béla Budai - Drums

EPIC TANTRUM ANNOUNCE THE FIRST ANNUAL EPIC FEST

mail-44.png

Fast-rising prog rockers Epic Tantrum is pleased to announce the first annual Epic Fest, a two day celebration of music and art – taking place on September 10 and 11, 2021 at Sharkey’s Event Center in Syracuse, New York. Visit epic-fest.com for more details, and visit showclix.com/event/epic-fest-syracuse to purchase tickets.

"It has always been our goal to play shows that are more than concerts, we want to create events, we want to see music and art showcased, and that is why Epic Fest was created,” said bassist Greg Ross, Epic Tantrum.

Epic Fest will feature national touring bands YYNOT, Ethan Brosh, PAKT, and Epic Tantrum as well as iconic photography from Mark Weiss and cover art of the legendary Ioannis from DangerousAge (both will be displaying their art both nights), while Bass Magazine is one of the evening’s sponsors. PAKT features Alex Skolnick of Testament and bassist Percy Jones best known for his work in jazz fusion group Brand X. YYNOT started as a RUSH tribute band featuring the incredible bass playing of Tim Starace. They have since added their own material and built up a large devoted following. Also appearing will be acclaimed guitar shredder Ethan Brosh, who Guitar World described as “The young guitarist combines a deep musical knowledge, the ability to seduce listeners with catchy melodies and a style that makes this up-and-coming talent shine.”

Ioannis has designed over 175 record covers, and singles, for such groups as Deep Purple, Allman Brothers, Blue Oyster Cult, Dream Theater, King Crimson, Bob Weir, Extreme, UFO, Saga, and many others.

mail-114.jpeg

Mark Weiss is an American rock music photographer. His most widely recognized photographs capture the look and aesthetic of music and celebrity personalities of the 1980s. His work with publications such as Circus magazine and FACES helped establish Mark "Weissguy" Weiss as a name known for rock photography. Weiss has travelled the world photographing legends from Van Halen, Ozzy Osbourne, Aerosmith, and Mötley Crüe to Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Bon Jovi, and KISS. Weiss’s iconic images capture the artists onstage, backstage, and behind the scenes.

"Our goal is to build this into a yearly event that showcases some of the great talent in this area as well as bringing in national touring bands," said Paul Ligner, guitarist, Epic Tantrum.

Epic Tantrum is comprised of members Peter - guitar, vox; Paul - guitar, vox; Greg - bass, vox; and Z - drums. The origins of the band started when Peter and Paul began recording instrumental classical guitar pieces. They enjoyed working together and decided to write and record original material in Paul's studio, known as The Strangers Room. Inspired by the creative process of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, the two wrote songs and tinkered with them until they were satisfied, at which point they brought in friends to round out their recording sessions. Paul's longtime friend Z joined the band as the drummer. They named this collaboration Epic Tantrum, and recorded a demo entitled "31st and Mary". Over the next few years, they continued to write and record material - but the goal of a full band remained elusive. In 2016, Greg joined the band as bassist and the hard work of finishing their debut album kicked into full gear. Epic Tantrum started playing live in 2017 and has already shared the stage with national recording artists such as King's X.

Grohowski is one of the busiest drummers in business, and his recent associations include John Zorn, Brand X, Imperial Triumphant, Kilter, Felix Pastorius & Hipster Assassins, John Medeski, Lonny Plaxico, Tony Levin, Beledo, Markus Reuter, and many others. HARRY STAFFORD (INCA BABIES) & punk-blues vet MARCO BUTCHER take on Manchester on 'Termite City' ahead of 'Bone Architect

"Unapologetically weaving their way through varied genres, Stafford & Butcher’s bluesy story-based music is raw around the edges, while sucking you willingly inside – a sonic diamond in the rough, so to speak" ~ The Spill Magazine

"The symmetry between the two artists is remarkable... a refreshing track, meshing the grit of blues with an urban thematic. This is dirty but agreeable, weaving straightforward guitar work through the prism of a junkyard instrument approach. Goes down smooth like a good shot of bourbon" ~ Big Takeover Magazine

Underground music icon Harry Stafford, long associated with the city of Manchester, has teamed up with Marco Butcher for the new 'Bone Architecture'album. Ahead of releasing the 12-track effort, they reveal the track 'Termite City'with a video featuring Stafford riding through England's northern capital.

“’Termite City’ is a celebration of the dirty city that always keeps standing no matter what people throw at it. Bombs, Riots, Scottish Football fans, Demolition, bad planning. People love this city and will do everything to protect it and despite their cynicism, they just can’t help themselves but be proud. Show a little love. A city is a termite tower with thousands of people all working to make their way in it. This termite Tower is Manchester; termites even build cathedral mounds," says Harry Stafford.

“Jazz supremo Kevin Davy plays trumpet on this track and it is one of his finest pieces of work ever, IMO, and one of the best collaborations I have had the fortune to put on my record. The cat can blow.”

Not long ago, the duo released the single 'There's Someone Tryin' To Get In', which was well received and has garnered the duo press attention and airplay in several dozen countries.

Despite the distance between them Stafford and Butcher are punk soul brothers from the same muddy musical pond. Connecting during a year of ‘lockdown hell’ inadvertently led to their collaboration.

'Bone Architecture' is a superb collection of songs that is raw and, at times, an unforgiving forage into urban punk blues with fuzzed up jazz and garage trash rock. Here, Harry and Marco’s styles have clashed magnificently into a powerful record that crosses a multitude of genres but with a dirty blues makeover. The LP includes reworked older material, brand-new compositions and even a dirty blues version of the Pink Floyd classic 'Arnold Layne'.

Best known as founder, guitarist and vocalist of Manchester post-punk gothic rockers Inca Babies, Harry’s two most recent solo albums ('Guitar Shaped Hammers' and 'Gothic Urban Blues') reflect a cooler, less frenetic vibe, leaning on piano, trumpets and blues guitar. All this made him the perfect collaborator to set words and lyrics to Marco’s sonic backdrop.

From Sao Paulo, Marco Butcher now lives in Winston Salem, North Carolina. A prolific artist, his acts include The Jam Messengers, Chicken Snake, and The Jesus and The Groupies. Professing the American underground of blues, jazz, rockabilly and screaming punk blues, he has collaborated with Hugo Race and members of Tex and the Horseheads, Pussy Galore, Gumball, The Gories, Gibson Brothers, Jerry Teel, The Oblivians and The Workdogs.

“There’s something about collaborating that is pure magic to me, cause you're not sharing ideas at the same time and you're in the moment. There’s something about the not knowing what the other will bring . . the surprise factor. The fact that music is very elastic and not always the way ya listen to it in your mind but something else, something cooler, greater," says Marco Butcher.

Marco's tracks were recorded at his Boombox Studio. Harry laid down vocals, piano and other instruments at Black Lagoon Records. London-based trumpet supremo Kevin Davy added jazz tones into the mix. After engineering, agonising, production and debates, they were finally mastered by Marco.

As of August 20, 'Termite City' will be available everywhere online, including Spotifyand Apple Music. The 'Bone Architecture' LP will be released on September 3 via Black Lagoon Records, both digitally and on CD, now available for pre-order via Bandcamp and the Louder than War shop.

WATCH MOD CLASSICTK - H8 (feat. Thom Hazaert) (Official Music Video)

Thrash band MOD ClassicTK released the official music video for the title track "H8" today. The single is from their new EP titled H8 that released to the masses on July 30th via Force 5 Records. The 5 song EP was produced by Tim McMurtrie and Eric Rachel and was mixed by Eric Rachel.

“When talks of a 30 year reunion failed, Kenny and I decided we were going to do this ourselves. We found a sick, shredding-throat vocalist in Donny 'The DRP' Polinske, formally of SORE & PRIMER 55, and asked my old friend James Demaria of Heathen & TOXXIK to smash down some drums and here we are over 34 years later, Donny is also the owner of Force 5 Records which put out the band's first EP H8." says Tim McMurtrie.

He adds, "This EP had me turning the power switch back on, putting my mindset back into the thrash classic sound that we helped to originate in the underground scene back in the 80's.
The crossover genre of Punk, Metal & Hardcore is what we bring back to the table on this 5 song banger. Together with Kenny’s undeniable bass tone and my riffing we sound like we never stopped playing together. Adding Donny and James to this EP broke down all the barriers put in front of them. They crushed this thing and people are noticing what’s transpired.
And with all the amazing tracks laced from the guest appearances of Michael J Romeo, Marc Rizzo and Thom Hazaert, this thing is truly what our true fans wanted since 87."

Ireland's Emperor of Ice Cream has announced their new 'Weather Vane' single, set for release on August 24 via FIFA Records. Mixed and produced by Graham Finn, this single was mastered by Tom Volpicelli (The Who, Iggy Pop, The Alarm, Pat Benatar, The Bloodhound Gang) at The Mastering House in New Jersey.

At the same time, they present an audio-visual taster of the B-side 'High Rise Low Rise', a song about growing up amongst friends, who are viewed as misfits, oddballs and freaks. Nevertheless, the ideas and dreams that flow between these strange kids will change them all and the world around them, forever. The accompanying video was written and directed by Veronica Terreblanche and reimagined by John Haggis with the director's permission.

Almost 30 years after forming, they finally released their debut album ‘No Sound Ever Dies’ via FIFA Records. Now based in Cork, Waterford, New York and Amsterdam respectively, Edward Butt (bass), John 'Haggis' Hegarty (vocals), Graham Finn (guitars) and Colum Young (drums) decided to put out their debut album that Sony Records had shelved 25 years ago after signing the band - only better.

Returning with the new single 'Weather Vane', the band captures the zeitgeist of this isolationist day in age, where social relations can be somewhat strained. Moods, motives and expectations can sometimes make us feel like we are caught up in a tornado of emotions when a relationship hits a rocky patch. This song is about the hope that remains even when things are falling apart.

Offering driving rhythms and thumping basslines, the band lays the foundations for raw and melodic guitars, topped by elegant, lush vocals and harmonies. A natural direction for the band, they bring in a fresher and raw sound, letting the parts speak for themselves rather than enveloping them with pedals and tricks.

Since re-emerging on the scene in May 2020, Emperor of Ice Cream have embarked on a chapter few anticipated would be written. Their debut record's first anniversary is marked by a second pressing on vinyl and CD. Entering the official Irish album charts at number 35, the LP topped the independent charts and was among the top 20 best-selling Irish releases of 2020.

"It's a strange task, to make music with people you haven't been in the same room as for over two decades, but the challenge was a welcome one. Overseen by Graham from his New York abode, the drums were beautifully recorded in Amsterdam at IJland Studios by Remko Schouten, who has previously worked with Pavement, Stephen Malkamus & The Jicks and Devendra Bernhardt," says John Haggis.

"Assembling parts from home studios in Cork and Waterford, the final touches, edits and mixes were completed in NY. It's an unusual way of doing things, but with the year that world has experienced collectively, not an uncommon one these days, unfortunately.

Garnering a new legion of supporters around the globe, renewed demand for the band's back catalogue resulted in the release of a compilation album of their three early Sony-backed EPs ('Overflow', 'William' and 'Know Me'), having sold out in the pre-digital 90’s. Reaching number 21 in the official album charts, the album also rose to number 3 in the independent charts. While the limited-edition physical copies were sold out on release day, it is still available as a digital download.

On August 24, the 'Weather Vane' single will be released digitally on Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp and other platforms. In the meantime, the second pressing of 'No Sound Ever Dies' LP is available for pre-order on white vinyl, CD, cassette and digital download, shipping out August 27, the day before its first birthday.

New singles from Manchester's THE SPEED OF SOUND

"The thoughtfulness that goes into The Speed of Sound’s lyrics and music is precious. Unmistakable sound... a winning formula" ~ Big Takeover Magazine

“New Wave blood, powered by a heartbeat of 1960’s influences” ~ Louder Than War

“Distinctive traces of New York Art Rock and No Wave, often verging on the experimental and psychedelic while never losing its melody and infections catchiness” ~ Sounds

“Moody and intense, yet light and floating at the same time” ~ There Once Was A Note

“A cool mix of punk and The Byrds 5th Dimension LP” ~ Lord Litter

“Balancing spiky abrasiveness with a strong sense of melody” ~ Bliss Aquamarine

British underground music veterans The Speed Of Sound have announced the autumn release of their fifth studio album 'Museum of Tomorrow', to be issued on CD and Deluxe LP via California's Big Stir Records, 32 years to the day the band released their debut EP back in 1989.

Ahead of this, the band reveal the lead track 'Tomorrow's World' as a sweet taster of what's in store for listeners, along with an animated video. The entire 21st century seems to have been mis-sold. This song is a cry of anguish and a re-statement of what should have been. Twelve multilayered synthesizer tracks recreate a flying saucer landing at the end and the ultra-depth in the sound is from bowed bass on the verse-ends and pre-chorus.

From the opening line “We were offered Star Trek, but they fed us Soylent Green” - which is etched into the vinyl - science fiction abounds within the music, positioning The Now simultaneously in the Future and in the Past. We all exist on the edge of forever.

Conceived as two seamless sides, the vinyl edition of this record was mastered as two complete extended pieces: Gallery One and Gallery Two. Korg synthesiser lines, reminiscent of classic Science Fiction incidental music and sound-collages, link the gapless songs.

To date, The Speed of Sound has released eight singles via Big Stir, but 'Museum of Tomorrow' is an all-new experience. While each of these 13 new songs could have been a single, they are gathered in an organically homogeneous collection, showcased within the 'Museum Of Tomorrow'. This is an album made manifest by and for people who like albums.

This is future retro modern music, rooted in a definite 60’s influence but with an 80’s twist. Influenced by The Byrds, Small Faces, The Chords, Siouxsie & The Banshees and XTC, with female and male vocals, The Speed Of Sound merges the power of punk with the floating harmonies of The Byrds. Their sound and alphabetical order places them between Sonic Youth and Dusty Springfield.

The Speed Of Sound formed in Manchester in 1989 with a pre-history dating directly back to the day Andy Warhol died in 1987. Dwelling deep below the ‘music industry radar’ has allowed for the evolution of their own distinct sound, their live act often described totally differently with comparisons from The Stranglers and Television to Jefferson Airplane and The Who.

The Speed Of Sound has continuously produced music that is optimistic and with lyrical bite, a punk-inspired DIY ethos and lust for experimentation rooted in psychedelia. While players have come and gone, the current lineup has largely been the same for four years, including father and son John Armstrong (guitars and vocals) and Henry Armstrong (keyboards), Ann-Marie Crowley (vocals and guitar), Kevin Roache (bass guitar) and John Broadhurst (drums).

'Tomorrow's World' is out on August 13 and will be available via Apple Music and Spotify. On September 17, the 'Museum of Tomorrow' LP will be released digitally, on CD and limited-edition 170g heavy weight vinyl with a choice between black and glorious colour. Vinyl orders include a 16-page full-colour A5 printed Exhibition Guide containing lyrics, full-colour inner sleeve, a separate picture insert, a sticker, a pair of badges/buttons and a bookmark. The album can already be pre-ordered in all formats from Big Stir Records' site.

Death Metal Quintet LIVLØS Reveals Crushing New Single + Video “And Then There Were None“

Danish Melodic Death Metal Upstarts LIVLØS Reveal Bone-Crushing New Single + Video “And Then There Were None”

New Album, And Then There Were None, out October 22 via Napalm Records

Pre-Order HERE

LIVLØS brings melodic death metal to new levels!

With a critically acclaimed debut album and explosive live shows at home and abroad, Danish death metal phenomenon LIVLØS have established themselves as an essential new name in the international metal scene. Their brand of Scandinavian melodic death metal, influenced by bands like AT THE GATES and CARCASS, paired with American-rooted death metal in the vein of DEATH and THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, has already earned the five-piece appearances at Copenhell, Eurosonic and Spot Festival.

Today, the band is thrilled to announce the upcoming release of their new full-length album,And Then There Were None, out October 22, 2021 via Napalm Records. The album shines as an ambitious, grandiose and intense work of metal, and a thematic deep dive into life and death on numerous levels.

The band has also revealed the album’s first single and title track, “And Then There Were None”, giving a glimpse of what a colossal masterpiece they are about to unleash! “And Then There Were None” is an impressive display of their modern approach to melodic death metal – with pounding drums, dynamic guitars and punishing vocals! LIVLØS are the band to watch in metal in 2021!

Watch the music video for “And Then There Were None”

On their new album, And Then There Were None, LIVLØS are audibly on top of their game: scrupulously ripping through nine tight, hard-lined tracks, the band takes no shortcuts while still maintaining a dynamic songwriting style that keeps listeners on their toes throughout the album’s runtime. Album opener and title track “And Then There Were None” sets the pace with punishing vocals and raging death metal riffs, leading into dramatic choruses and guitar solos that display LIVLØS‘ incredibly multi-faceted talent right off the bat. Only very rarely will the band give listeners time to breathe, like on acoustic intermission “Kistefjael” or the slowed-down, stomping “The Purest Black”, which ends the album experience of And Then There Were None in a triumphant, epic manner. Songs like “Seize The Night” are impressive depictions of singer Niklas Lykke’s broad vocal range, reaching from deep and guttural to high-pitched and ear-piercing sections.

Excellently mixed by Jacob Bredahl (ex-HATESPHERE) and mastered by Brad Boatright (known for his work with OBITUARY, NAILS and TORCHE among others), And Then There Were None is an exceptional display of LIVLØS‘ confident, modern approach to melodic death metal, meticulously executed from start to finish – revealing more of what it has to offer with every listen. LIVLØS prove that they are here to stay with And Then There Were None!

BASTARÐUR Shares Official Video for New Song, "Burn"

Crust punk outfit BASTARÐUR (ft. Sólstafir singer/guitarist Aðalbjörn "Addi" Tryggvason) will be releasing its debut album, 'Satan's Loss of Son,' on October 29, 2021! The band is now sharing the eye-opening and intense video for the second single, "Burn," which can be seen and heard below

'Satan's Loss of Son' is now available for pre-orders HERE.

Singer/guitarist Aðalbjörn Tryggvason has always worn his vast musical influences on his sleeve. Be it an ENTOMBED sticker emblazoned on his guitar, queueing up Ennio Morricone before a set, or paying homage to Lemmy Kilmister with his cowboy sensibilities, it’s no secret that his love for music cannot be contained to any one genre. Now, Tryggvason is taking his adoration for crust punk to an exciting new level with his latest project, BASTARÐUR, which channels influences such as NAPALM DEATH, TERRORIZER, MOTÖRHEAD,and DISFEAR.

“The idea of writing death metal in the vein of old ENTOMBED came in 2018,” Tryggvason says on the project’s inception. “Not being able to channel my love for such music through my main band [SÓLSTAFIR], I began writing riffs, and riffs became songs, and all the sudden it had more crust punk elements than I had foreseen.” And yet, despite the apparent departure from SÓLSTAFIR’s sound, Tryggvason’s signature voice and brief moments of atmospheric texture color the record in familiar shades that ring true to his core musical identity.

The band was born during personal turmoil, a prime example of turning a negative situation into a positive opportunity. “Living with my parents after a relationship break up and being unemployed, I set up a small studio in my dad’s garage, and after a few months there was an album of material,” explains Tryggvason. “Me and my good mate Birgir Jónsson, most known for his work with Icelandic metal act DIMMA, had for years talked about making music together, and this seemed the perfect time, so we got ourselves into a studio with former SÓLSTAFIR live sound guy Jóhann and recorded the album in a few days.”

Tryggvason tapped several other co-conspirators to contribute towards his vision. Guest vocals are attributed to Marc Grewe (MORGOTH/INSIDIOUS DISEASE) and Alan Averill (PRIMORIDIAL), the latter of whom also penned the lyrics on two of the album’s tracks. Some of the blistering guitar solos were handled by Ragnar Zolberg, whom SÓLSTAFIR fans may know as he has filled in on bass for the band during occasional live shows, and Thrainn from SKÁLMÖLD. “I dare to call them Hanneman/King of Iceland,” Tryggvason says of the talented pair of axmen.

BASTARÐUR’s debut also takes a cue from Tryggvason’s distant musical past and rudimentary beginnings. “I used to be in a punk band called BÖLVUN, where I played drums,” he explains. “’Afturhalds Kommatittir’ is from that band, so we got Ingi Thor Pálsson and Flosi Þorgeirsson to play on that song. Flosi also does a bass solo on ‘Viral Tumor.’

Now, after three years in the making, BASTARÐUR is finally ready to make its debut via Season of Mist!
