W.O. Smith Music School Announces New Executive Director

W.O. Smith Music School is pleased to announce the appointment of Valerie Cordero, Ph.D. as its new Executive Director. With an extensive background in nonprofit leadership, fundraising and community engagement, Dr. Cordero brings a deep commitment to music and youth development to the role.

She follows Jonah Rabinowitz, who led W.O. Smith for nearly 30 years, shaping it into a thriving institution that provides life-changing music education to Nashville’s underserved youth. Under his direction, the school expanded its reach, built a strong financial foundation and strengthened its role as a cornerstone of the city’s cultural and educational landscape.

Dr. Cordero moved to Nashville in 2012 and, since that time, has fostered connections within local schools, arts organizations and the music industry. She joins W.O. Smith after fifteen years at Families for Depression Awareness (FFDA), where she served most recently as Co-Executive Director.  At FFDA, Dr. Cordero led fundraising and marketing efforts while also working nationally to advance affordable, culturally-responsive mental health care. A recognized advocate, she has been featured in Reader’s Digest, Better Homes & Gardens and New York Magazine’s The Cut and has presented at conferences across the U.S.

With a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from UCLA and a lifelong passion for the intersection of music and community, Dr. Cordero is excited to bring her knowledge and leadership to W.O. Smith. She looks forward to spreading its mission and programming for Nashville’s youth.

“I am honored to become a part of the school’s incredible legacy,” she said. “My hope is to further magnify our impact so that we reach—and advocate for—even more underserved youth and families.”

“Valerie’s extensive experience in nonprofit management and profound understanding of the significance of music education make her an exceptional choice to lead W.O. Smith Music School,” said Greg Hill, Chair of the Board of Directors. “Her passion and expertise, coupled with our amazing staff and volunteers, will ensure that our students thrive for years to come.”

As W.O. Smith Music School embarks on this new chapter, the Board of Directors and staff are eager to welcome Dr. Cordero’s vision to expand programming, strengthen community partnerships and continue to provide life-changing opportunities for students.
