Toronto indie grunge-rock trio ON present hard-hitting 'Underdog' single

Alternative / indie rockers ON - a trio comprised of Toronto music scene veterans, formerly of popular 90’s outfits Acid Test, Danko Jones and Rocket Science - present their brazen new single 'Underdog'. This is the first taste of their forthcoming 'ON' album to be released on September 20 via Indiestructable Records.

'Underdog' is a song about hope, love, angst and dreams. It's about the temptation to get back in the ring once more when the world no longer makes any sense and you have nothing to lose. The accompanying video was filmed by Lindi Gordonand edited by Michael Gucciardi.

Formed in Toronto, ON is a sonic guitar-based landscape centered around the undeniable chemistry of its core members Lucy Di Santo (vocals, bass), Dan Cornelius (drums) and Steve Fall (guitars). While ON was active through the 1990’s and 2000s as the members’ side project, it has since taken on greater meaning at the forefront of the members' musical plans.

"This record deals with where we are today and what we’ve overcome, persevering as a society and as individuals. I found myself as part of a genuinely authentic creative, human experience with Steve and Dan in various geographical locations including NYC, Florida and Toronto and felt the need to document it melodically. It’s about pain, hope, reframing and overcoming. It’s about survival. The songs are an authentic and complete collaboration of the triad and soul connection that is ON," says frontwoman Lucy Di Santo.

Always pushing forward with an eye on the rear-view mirror, ON pays homage to
its roots in timeless classics, post-punk, grunge, old-school funk and 90s college rock. Well-crafted songs with an attention to arrangement, groove and performance a la carte, ON's music connects with an audience seeking out impactful and genre-defying music.

With infectious guitar riffs with a dash of p-funk groove, ON's music recalls a listening journey of classic albums on vinyl. While some songs are carried by emotional weight, some are ripping mini-audio trips with invigorating twists and turns. Lucy’s signature vocal phrasings, infectious ear-candy melodies and harmonies meet with a driving rhythm section and powerful poignant guitar artistry.

"This record is a document of friendship navigating explores in pain, and hope. Looking at the world with a collaborative effort to document what we see, witness and feel through songwriting and chemistry as band," says ON guitarist Steve Fall.

"The three of us have been great friends for years and we have deep respect for each other‘s talents and songwriting abilities. We all decided to make some music in a rehearsal space in Manhattan when Steve n Lu were visiting Manhattan a couple years back. Instead of making it a one time thing, we had such a blast that we continued writing music online via video calls. As soon as there were opportunities to get together, we met up and, one by one, we started to chip away at the songs until we were happy," says ON drummer Dan Cornelius.

ON has previously toured across the USA, as well as playing various pockets of Mexico and Canada. Their recordings are found on various CFNY and CMW New Music Compilations, as well as a limited cassette tape releases via the Opcion Sonica label with sales at over 6,000 in just one weekend at an open-air market in Mexico City.

While Toronto is still home for Di Santo and Fall, Cornelius currently resides in NYC. The trio collaborated and wrote the material for this album in Toronto and New York City, their work culminating with pre-production recording in Fort Meyers during the winter of 2021 with Drew Howard at Star Sound Studios. The band has since been working out of Phase One Studios with sound engineer Darius Szczepaniak (Sum 41, Black Crowes, Big Sugar, Bare Naked Ladies, Jann Arden, Moxy Früvous).

As of July 20, 'Underdog' can be found everywhere online, including Bandcamp. The full 'ON' album will be released on September 16 via Indiestructable Records and can be pre-orders at https://indiestructablerecords.com. The band will kick off their 'Underdog' Tour on August 18, hitting venues in Kingston, Ottawa, Baldwin, Toronto, Barrie, Paris, Niagara Falls, Cambridge, Hamilton and London.

With American Songwriter proclaiming of their forthcoming Tornillo album (available July 29), “Whiskey Myers [is] in a league of their own with their signature hard-rocking sound on full display,” fans of the multi-Platinum band have even more to look forward to with today’s announcement of the Thursday night pre-party lineup for their personally-curated Firewater Music Festival.

With just over two months until Firewater takes over the outskirts of Kansas City for a second year, Steven Bankey & The Flatlanders, Eli Howard & The Greater Good, Matt Poss Band and Clay Clear Band have been added to perform exclusively for Thursday early entry passholders at what was a fan-favorite event during last year’s inaugural festival.

In addition to the pre-party, the festival will also feature two performances from Whiskey Myers throughout the weekend as well as sets by a who’s who of artists straddling the lines of Country, Rock and Americana. With the festival returning for its second year, the highly anticipated lineup features Blackberry Smoke, Old 97’s, Read Southall Band, Nikki Lane, Quaker City Night Hawks, 49 Winchester, Goodbye June, Austin Meade, Matt Koziol, Them Dirty Rosesand The Weathered Souls.

“We were just thinking about ‘what do we want to do here? Who do we get to play?’,” front man Cody Cannon shared with Outsider of curating the inaugural lineup in 2021. “Then at the end of the day, it’s like, we just need to get our friends. Our favorite bands around are the people that we’re friends with. So, all those people on there, man, we just think the world of them… we’re very thankful to be able to put that together and just have all our friends at the same place at once.”

In addition to a reunion of musical friends on stage, the festival located on 150 acres of meadows, ponds and wooded hills will offer the ultimate outdoor lifestyle experience for fans with the live concerts supplemented by on-site activities include canoeing, zip-lining, rock climbing and a swimming pool.

Two-day GA passes for Friday & Saturday’s concerts are priced at $144 and include free tent camping while two-day VIP passes, which also include free tent camping as well as a dedicated viewing area and private bathrooms, are priced at $244. Two-day Super VIP passes, priced at $499, include the standard VIP amenities as well as exclusive access to a viewing deck with optimal views of the performances. Guests may also purchase an early entry pass for $39 to begin camping Thursday, Sept. 29 and to attend the exclusive pre-party concert. Primitive RV sites are available as an add-on for $200. BASK Announces Live Shows in Southeast U.S.A.

Appalachian psych rockers BASK will be hitting the road in August for three U.S. dates, which includes an appearance at Basic City Beer Fest in Waynesboro, VA! The full run can be found below.

BASK is touring in support of 2019's release, 'III,' which was named one of the best records of 2019 (#7) by Metal Injection. 'III' was released on November 8 via Season of Mist, making it the band's debut to the label. The record can be streamed, purchased, and downloaded HERE.

Categorizing musical style often acts as a shortcut.  It allows us to quickly find what we think we’ll like and while defining a band by genre can be a positive for attracting new listeners, these barriers can also be limiting and may hinder our discovery of music that may inspire, embolden and provoke us.  Sometimes categories need to be broken and those limiting genre demarcations need to be shattered so that new musical expressions can emerge without limits.  North Carolina’s BASK is one of those special acts that transcend through even the most detailed categorizations in order to genuinely break new ground and take the listener on a journey of musical discovery that is acutely novel yet also warmly familiar.

Hailing from Carolina’s storied Blue Ridge Mountains, BASK was fully conceived in the fall of 2013 when guitarist Ray Worth, drummer Scott Middleton, bassist Jesse Van Note, and guitarist/vocalist Zeb Camp came together to produce sounds that were properly reflective of the lush yet rugged Appalachian habitat. The band’s newest record, ‘III,’ showcases a soulful juxtaposition of Americana rock ‘n’ roll with progressive and psychedelic elements, separating BASK from your average rock band from the South.

Since forming in 2013, BASK has released two formidable and critically acclaimed full lengths: “American Hollow” (2014) and “Ramble Beyond” (2017). Each song on ‘III’ is inspired by legend, folklore, or mythology, reexamining characters and situations that are often misunderstood, overlooked or requiring deeper introspection. “III” fervently embraces the natural world, the cyclical nature of our human experience, and grapples with the some of the hardships of those events and happenings that make us who we really are.

BASK’s sound has been described as progressive and cinematic, containing glimpses of their native region’s unique tonality and heartfelt heaviness; something they unequivocally prove with ‘III.’ While expertly crafted songs like the incredibly catchy “New Dominion” and the rockin’ “Stone Eyed” present a heavier dynamic from the band, tracks like “Maiden Mother Crone” and “Rid of You” serve up a melancholy elegance that showcases the band’s roots, adding to the record’s vast yet cohesive dimensions. “Noble Daughters II-The Bow” combines heavy groove with accessible classic guitar rock sensibilities and dreamy sonicscapes.  The diversity in the record is cognizant of the band’s wealth of influences and the songs are crafted so intriguingly that the listener is often eagerly awaiting what’s coming next.

They will then play headline shows in London and Bournemouth before continuing their touring back out in mainland Europe.

In 2020, VOYAGER's music video for "Runaway" was exclusively premiered via 'Eurovision - Australia Decides!' Following an application via the Song Portal, the band finally received recognition for submitting a track and were paid tribute on the live television broadcast that aired on Saturday, February 8 on the Gold Coast. The song was taken from VOYAGER's 2019 release 'Colours in the Sun,' which received a wealth of international accolades. Recently, the single "Brightstar" was the first place winner in the Rock / Alternative category of the USA songwriting contest! Last year, 'Colours in the Sun' was the winner of The Independent Music Award in the Rock/Hard Rock Album category. Since their 1999 formation, whatever genre norms, boundaries and regulations thrust upon Perth, Australia’s Voyager have been smashed. They embrace, if not brandish pop; employ a keytar on stage, and, bring forward a positive, if not uplifting feeling to their music, running head-first into the endless parade of heavy bands who see the world in a different light. It’s perhaps why the title of their seventh full-length and first for Season of Mist, Colours in the Sun, is apropos: Voyager simply prefers to see the bright side of things.

“Observations of the malaises of the modern world and the baffling obsession with purity and difference all make me think,” says frontman and founding member Danny Estrin. “We’ve never had it better and we’ve never had it more colorful. To me that’s progress, it’s adaptation, it’s evolution and it’s astounding.”

The follow-up to 2017’s Ghost Mile, Colours in the Sun finds Voyager enmeshed in rich, melodic, song-first tapestries, led by Estrin’s smooth, capable clean vocal delivery. Estrin is self-aware of his vocals, calling them “unique and ‘80s.” But whatever tag Estrin affixes to his voice, they are the propellent throughout Colours in the Sun, serving up a steady diet of soaring, emotive choruses, where melody is paramount and along the way, even getting some help from another distinctive belter, Leprous’s Einar Solberg on “Entropy.”

“Einar and I became good friends on our tours through Europe and Australia,” notes Estrin. “I couldn’t help but ask him to guest on the album. He is a fantastic musician and vocalist. I sent him a reference track which he swiftly ignored and laid his own tracks down. The result is stunning!”

The kaleidoscope of sounds that comprise the album’s ten cuts is the result of Voyager’s far-reaching influences, many of which go beyond the traditional realms of metal and rock. Estrin calls it “catchy at the top, proggy at the bottom, as if Dream Theater and Depeche Mode had a baby.” It’s almost as if the term “progressive” is too limiting for Voyager, particularly when the guitar tandem of Simone Dow and Scott Kay merge for complex rhythms while doing battle against Estrin’s vaudeville-like keyboards (!) on “Reconnected.”

The “proggy at the bottom” notice is served by way of the rhythm section of bassist Alex Canion and drummer Ashley Doodkorte, who stretch their musical tentacles across busy, active cuts such as “Saccharine Dream” and the syncopated “Water Over the Bridge.” “I think we found our ‘voice’ on V (2014) and have been building on that ever since,” says Estrin. “The synthwave prog sound is really something that has naturally developed and has been refined even more on the new album. Every record is progress — that’s what progressive music is all about!”

According to Estrin, the Colours in the Sun album title encompasses a “vibrant multitude of people coming together under the hot Australian sun to create a beautiful and colorful soundscape.” It’s capped off by artwork courtesy of Doodkorte, who made the piece out of photographs near his house in Perth. A closer inspection reveals there are seven suns on the cover, one for each Voyager album, topped off by an updated version of the band’s logo comprised of five strokes, one for each member. No doubt a fitting visual summation of a band whose progress can be the described in the most literal and figurative of terms.

“It’s been a slow steady growth over the years,” concludes Estrin. “Other bands come and go after a year of fame. I really feel like we’ve built up an incredible fanbase, especially over the last decade, and the deal with Season of Mist seemed the logical step to take it to the next level together.”

The Hollywood Allstars is the brainchild and handpicked supergroup of Grammy nominated songwriter/producer/keyboardist and former Epic/CBS recording artist Steve Gaspár on Hammond organ & piano.

Miranda Lambert Returns to Country Radio With Timely Single "Strange"

Reigning ACM Entertainer of the Year Miranda Lambert follows recent Top 10 single “If I Was A Cowboy,” the 15th of her career, as “Strange” impacts Country radio today, July 18. The anthem of timely encouragement serves as the second single off Lambert’s latest hit album, Palomino, already named one of the best of the year by TIME, Rolling Stone, Billboard, Stereogum and more.

“We couldn’t land on a bridge,” she adds of the writing process. “So, each one of us went and wrote a bridge on our own and came back and we ended up using lines from each person’s – so we cowrote that without even meaning to. It was pretty cool; everyone’s was different but when we took lines out of mine, Luke’s and Natalie’s it all fit together.”

The new single is the latest offering from the L.A. Times’ “Queen of Country Music,” whose 2022 has already been packed with accolades and achievements. “After CKY and a short break, I decided to continue, without changing the sound,” Miller explains. “Because that’s what I do. It’s what I love to do and what people say I do well. All of the guys who got in the band with me are great musicians. And each of them is hungry. They have priorities and ambitions about being in a rock band, no matter the grim state of pop music out there. If we can bring rock and metal back to the mainstream, in some way, that’s the dream.”

Israel born and LA based heavy rock artist OHP (OREN HALMUT) returns to modern pop with his newest #MetalCover of HARRY STYLES 2022 monster, guitar-driven synth-pop hit single, "As it Was." Originally premiered with TOXIC METAL ZINE, OHP's brutal reimagining swaps out bubbly synths and haunting vocals for crunchy guitars and roaring declarations, giving the megahit single a new approach to withering love and loss.

Oren started his musical endeavor at the young age of nine in Tel-Aviv Israel. After playing and recording with numerous artists in his home town, he relocated to California in early 2000. Daniel Weber of The Disparrows has released his new single "Lose Somebody" to all major platforms. The single is from his solo project that is being released through Symphonic.

Daniel performed the vocals and guitar on the single with Vivian D'Souza on bass guitar, Vatan Dhuriya on piano/organ, and Jigar Shah on drums. It was produced by Jehangir Jehangir, and mixed/mastered by Anthony Focx.

“It’s a single on which we have been working on for many months. It’s the first single to be released under my solo work - under Daniel Weber. The song captures the pain and heartache to lose somebody in life, in a break up. The grief of death too. We shot for the music video in Los Angeles. The recording of the song was done in Mumbai but it was mixed and mastered in Nashville by Anthony Fox," says Daniel.

"Being able to write lyrics, and songs that lend themselves to real life situations has always been my preference. So watching the music video take shape and capture this makes me and the team extremely proud" he continues.

The video was directed by James Thomas and produced by Alice Thomas with Matthias Schubert as Director of Photography.

Born out of the ashes of record label bankruptcy and the loss of the rights to their name, Bobaflexfound themselves lost at sea when they started their own label BFX Records for the release their first independent full album Hell In My Heart in 2011. The album spawned two charting singles and set the mold for Bobaflex’s fiercely independent way of life.

Since Hell In My Heart Bobaflex has begun to solidify themselves as the model for independence. They have released two further independent albums under their BFX label (Charlatan’s Web – 2013 and Anything That Moves – 2015). These two resulted in another 2 charting singles and multiple self produced music videos with one million or more views. Bobaflex released Eloquent Demons (2017), before going on an indefinite touring hiatus. After years of inactivity, Bobaflexreleased a surprise reunion single, "I'll Blow Your Dreams into the Sky" (2022) and have have rare select reunion shows scheduled.

To clear up any confusion, The Lonely Ones are members of Bobaflex, minus Shaun and Jake. Both bands are releasing new music, but The Lonely Ones will continue to tour nonstop, while Bobaflex will only play a few select shows a year.

HIEROPHANT Shares New Single, "Crypt of Existence"

Italian death metal band HIEROPHANT will be releasing a brand new full-length, 'Death Siege,' on August 26, 2022 via Season of Mist! The band is now sharing the second new single, "Crypt of Existence," .

HIEROPHANT comment on the track: "Into the crypt of existence let thy light become darkness, as life will become death. Forever."

“Controlled chaos?” Lorenzo pauses for a song before finally looking right through you with his piercing eyes and slowly answering: “yes, I like the sound of that, it sums up pretty much what they stand for. Chaos with a sense if you will.”

The guitarist and vocalist of the Ravena-based band HIEROPHANT isn’t one to bury you under bigmouth statements and empty words. But when he says he thinks Death Siege is “the best thing we ever did and the one album when HIEROPHANT really comes on its own”, you know he means it.

Since their previous album, and first for SEASON OF MIST, Mass Grave in 2016 - originally described as a “vicious” mix of black sludge and death metal - many things have happened. It started with the release two years later of a two-track EP called Spawned Abortions “a good indication of where we were going but still not quite there”.

The band’s fourth full-length Death Siege was written during the first months of the pandemic, from March 2020 until May 2021, a dark period described by Lorenzo as a “long fucking long process but it was worth it. Until then, we were maybe missing a bit proper song structures and arrangements. In retrospect, Mass Grave is more grind-ish whereas the new is far more metal and riff-oriented. The songs are longer and have more things happening in them, the album is overall far more ambitious and more, well, musical

He concedes that HIEROPHANT started out more or less as “some kind of hardcore band, but with metal influences”, especially since Lorenzo has been also playing bass for THE SECRET since 2011, even if they haven’t been “very active” for a couple of years. “With HIEROPHANT, we actually signed our first contract originally with a hardcore/punk focused label called BRIDGE NINE. Originally, we had another line-up with a fulltime singer and we sounded like a very pissed off D-beat/crust band. But already in the back of my head, I had other plans. And when our frontman left in 2015, I took over the microphone as well and that’s when we started to evolve. To me, Mass Grave was a transitional record, it caught us midway if you will. But now with Death Siegewe’ve finally reached our destination. And while we made a name of ourselves in the scene, I believe it’s truly the album that will take us a step further.”

Death Siege is full of war metaphors, lyrics about complete annihilation (‘Seeds Of Vengeance’, ‘Devils Incarnate’, Bloodbath Compendium’ etc.) and “fire, hatred and endless void. The sub-title for it could have been ‘impending doom’, it’s like you know something awful it’s going to happen and sweep the plate clean but no matter how hard you try, you won’t be able to stop it. That’s how I want the listeners to feel when they listen to this record.” He pauses before adding with his iron will look, “one could say that the album general state-of-mind is ‘no mercy, kill everybody’. Yep, that sums it up about right.” Are you ready?
